[The Complete Story of Five Beauties] [74] [Author: Parasite]

Chapter Seventy-Four: Lord Lin Burns Down the Huguo Temple; Officials Receive Complaints. Tingfang recounts that Lord Lin was rescued by Tang Biao, and the officials apologized, immediately changing their clothes and sitting down. After the officials finished their greetings, Lord Lin ordered the evil monk to be brought up. The servants agreed and brought the monk Shuiyue. The monk stood without kneeling. Lord Lin cursed, "His Majesty appointed you here as abbot, so you should burn incense morning and evening, praying for the prosperity of the nation and the well-being of the people. Why are you so lawless here, forcibly taking women, building a private dungeon, and killing countless innocent people? You bald donkey, having committed such sins, should kneel and beg for your life now that you're in my hands. How dare you resist like this!" Monk Shuiyue laughed loudly, saying, "Lin Zhang, Lin Zhang, I am the Emperor's substitute. My slight transgressions are unforgivable. I knew you were Lin Zhang yesterday, and last night I would have cut you into dozens of pieces. How can I allow you to act so arrogantly today?" Lord Lin was furious and ordered a large board to be brought to beat the bald monk. The servants obeyed, picked up the board, and struck his calves several times. Monk Shuiyue could not stand and fell to the ground.
Lord Lin said, "I have no other crimes against you." He ordered Tang Biao to bring the imperial sword and cut off his donkey head. Shuiyue said, "Take me to the capital." Lord Lin was furious and ordered the execution. The servants dragged the monk Shuiyue out of the temple gate. A cannon fired, and a head fell to the ground. It was pitiful that even a substitute for the emperor could not save his life after breaking the law. This shows that one should always be law-abiding and avoid committing evil. Indeed: good and evil will eventually be rewarded, it's just a matter of sooner or later.
Soon, the executioner presented a bloody head. Lord Lin ordered it to be placed in a wooden bucket and hung on the wooden pole of the Hundred-Foot Tower for all to see. He also brought up Shuiyue's disciples and gave each of them forty heavy strokes of the cane. Many were killed, and the survivors were exiled to the border. The women and others who had been captured were all taken back to their families. The monk's land was confiscated by the government, and his clothes and other belongings were distributed to the poor. The temple was burned down, turning into a wasteland in an instant. Every person in Haizhou praised and was grateful.
The next day, Lord Lin set off, and the people burned incense and knelt to see him off. Three cannon shots rang out, signaling the departure of the boats, which headed straight for Huai'an. On the boat, Lord Lin recounted in detail what had happened since Qian and Lin parted. Qian and Lin recounted the events leading up to this, and Tang Biao then learned that the one who killed Hua Wenfang was actually Qian's maid, Cuixiu. Tang Biao then recounted in detail Chang Wanqing's attempt to storm the execution ground, and his own and Ma Yun's involvement in the attempted murder. The three men then understood the whole story, as if waking from a dream.
Talking and chatting, they arrived in Huai'an without realizing it. Officials greeted them, and Lord Lin boarded a large sedan chair. Three cannon shots rang out, and servants cleared the way, leading them through the east gate. Before long, they arrived at the Censorate and ascended the main hall. After the officials had bowed, they stood on both sides. Lord Lin summoned the constables and asked, "Has Shen Tingfang been apprehended?" The constables replied, "We arrested two more servants. The front and back gates of the Shen residence were tightly shut, and we were unable to enter, thus missing Your Excellency's deadline. We request Your Excellency grant us one more time." Lord Lin flew into a rage, saying, "You audacious lackeys! This court enforces the law strictly. I will break your legs before I can rush to arrest the culprits!" He reached into the divination stick container, grabbed four sticks, and slammed them onto the steps, giving each constable forty strokes of the cane. The constables shouted, and the court was filled with righteous indignation. Lord Lin said, "I give you three more days. If you still haven't brought Shen Tingfang to justice, I will beat you all to death, you lackeys!" The constables withdrew. Three cannon shots rang out, and the magistrate adjourned the court.
The servants, having left the gate, said, "This is utterly incomprehensible! We're being subjected to this injustice. We have three more days; if we don't catch him, we'll be punished. And where is that damned Shen Tingfang hiding? How are we supposed to apprehend him? Perhaps we should storm his front and back gates and start cursing and beating him; maybe he'll come out when he hears us." Having decided on their plan, they crowded into the Prime Minister's residence, half at the front gate and half at the back. They gathered some broken bricks and tiles to block the gates, cursing, "Damn Shen Tingfang! Your father is the Prime Minister, yet you keep your house locked up like this, aren't you afraid of what people will say? Damn it, you did this yourself; you should come out yourself. Why are we being punished? Damn it, if you don't come out, we'll climb in with a ladder and see where you're hiding!" They cursed and berated him at the front and back gates for a whole day.
Shen Tingfang understood every word clearly, feeling incredibly frustrated. He wanted to leave, but was afraid; he didn't want to stay, but had never suffered such humiliation before. He pondered this endlessly, unable to decide what to do. He went to his mother's room, sighed, and remained silent. His mother asked, "I'm so angry!" He then recounted how the servants had been banging on the front and back doors, hurling insults, and even trying to drag him in with a ladder to arrest him. "I think my father, a dignified prime minister, is now living in such a state of disrespect. I'd rather commit suicide than suffer this humiliation." His mother was shocked and said, "My son, don't do this! I gave birth to you and your brother, and unfortunately, your brother died tragically. My husband and I depend entirely on you. What could be so terrible that you want to die? Just stay in my room and see who dares to come near me!" "They'll search your room." Shen Tingfang said, "Mother's words are reasonable, but how can I vent my anger?" The lady said, "In that case, I'll send someone to take you to your father's residence and tell him what Lin Zhang said, so he can avenge you." Shen Tingfang said, "That's a good idea, but both the front and back gates are guarded by corrupt officials. How can I get out?" The lady said, "The back gate is never opened. Naturally, no one guards it. Who would know? Quickly pack your things and travel in the dead of night." Hearing this, Shen Tingfang was delighted and prepared to slip away that day.
Meanwhile, the servants, seeing the gate closed all day, thought to themselves, "Today we have to wait until midnight, and tomorrow is the deadline again. That bastard is hiding there; he'll never come out, no matter what. If we can't catch him soon, we'll be punished again. If we push him too far, he might escape to the Grand Tutor's mansion in the capital and never return. We'll be punished to death. We must be on guard here tonight." Shen Tingfang, having packed his belongings, and his servant Shen Deng, bid farewell to his mother at midnight. His mother said, "My son, please be careful on your journey. Send a letter home quickly from the capital so I can rest assured." Shen Tingfang replied, "I know. Mother, please take care at home." Mother and son parted with tears in their eyes. He and his servants opened the garden gate and sped away.
The constable said, "The garden gate is always open, but tonight, in the stillness of the night, it must have been opened for a reason." He quickly gathered his companions and shouted in unison, "Shen Tingfang, where do you think you're going?" Upon hearing this, Shen Tingfang was terrified. The constables rushed to him, intending to seize him to avoid being caught in the crossfire the next day. What happens next remains to be seen; let's find out in the next chapter.
