Whether by fate or destiny, a chance encounter led him to the entertainment industry, paving the way for my later career. There was an entertainment complex in Shanghai called "Little Stage," which housed all sorts of entertainment... The entertainment program included Peking Opera, acrobatics, storytelling, and the latest silent films. A perfectly good business location, however, suffered repeated losses and accumulated debts due to the owner's mismanagement. Driven to desperation by creditors, the owner had no choice but to auction off the "small stage." The shrewd and decisive eldest brother knew it was a treasure, and with his father's financial support, he bought it. Later, through his management, the "small stage" regained its former glory. Furthermore, the eldest brother used the small stage to embark on the path of entertainment films, founding "Tianyi Film Company." Controlling two-thirds of the film industry and leading Chinese cinematic trends, Star Film Company always had the power to do as it pleased. A single word from them could send shivers down the spines of Shanghai's film industry.

Before Tianyi's debut, several small, reckless film companies dared to challenge Star Film Company.

Some failed within days of their founding, while others, though struggling, ultimately suffered a crushing defeat.

Intimidated by Star Film Company's power, for a long time, no one dared to attempt such a feat.

Zhou Jianyun, the boss of "Star Company," once boasted in public that anyone who dared to oppose Star Company would be utterly crushed! He declared, "Let them taste the power of Star Company!" The arrogant "Star Company" had dominated the Shanghai film industry for many years; shaking its dominance was virtually impossible.

However, the newly arrived "Tianyi" posed a serious threat to the industry giant, "Star Company," stealing much of its business. Stars wanted to switch companies, directors wanted to leave, and "Star Company" lost its former prestige.

Therefore, Zhou Jianyun joined forces with other companies to deal with us. Zhou Jianyun, as the leader, united with "Greater China Lily," "Minxin," "Youlian," "Shanghai," and... Five film companies, including Huaju, formed the "Liuhe Film Company," creating a powerful joint distribution network to resist and suppress Tianyi Film Company. This is the famous "Liuhe Encirclement" in Chinese film history. At the time, we were no match for the "Liuhe Encirclement." My brothers and I had no choice but to abandon the Shanghai market and find another way. After discussing it, we sent our third brother to Southeast Asia alone to try to develop our business again. Our eldest brother even said that if our third brother couldn't handle things there, I could go and help him. This decision changed the fate of my life, Run Run Shaw.

Forced into a corner by "Liuhe," Tianyi had no choice but to change course, abandon its Shanghai base, and go to Southeast Asia to endure hardship and try to develop again.

In March 1926, we left Shanghai by ship for Southeast Asia. Before World War II, Southeast Asia comprised Malaya and Singapore, both under British colonial rule. Due to its closed and conservative nature, the society, economy, and people's lives were extremely backward. Ordinary people led monotonous and dull lives, lacking entertainment and leisure. Furthermore, the Chinese who migrated there constituted a large proportion of the population. This was a key reason why my brothers and I decided to explore the Southeast Asian market.

My third brother, alone, with the film "Tianyi" and some capital, embarked on his journey to Southeast Asia.

Singapore was his first stop in his solo adventure; it was the political, economic, and cultural center of Southeast Asia, a veritable bridgehead.

At that time, Singapore had no Chinese films; only the main theaters occasionally screened Western silent films. San Ge used his social skills to reach out to local theater owners and promote his films. However, he encountered setbacks. The main theaters only showed Western films, and the smaller theaters were tied to "Liuhe," effectively blocking "Tianyi." "Liuhe's" films hadn't actually penetrated Singapore; they were merely a name.

San Ge, unfamiliar with the place and a newcomer, recognized the market potential of Singapore and believed he could succeed.

Despite this initial setback, San Ge was undeterred. He avoided direct confrontation, adjusted his strategy, and adopted a guerrilla tactic. He first screened films in surrounding towns before returning to the city center to seize market share.

This approach proved effective; his "Tianyi" films, appealing to a wide audience, were very popular and quickly gained traction.

Within a quarter, his business was booming.

Working tirelessly day and night, San Ge's hard work brought him a steady stream of wealth. His pockets were bulging with money. His business snowballed, and no matter how capable he was, he couldn't keep up. That's when he remembered Shanghai, his family, and how he could ask me, his sixth brother, for help.

He rushed to the telegraph office and sent an urgent telegram to Shanghai: Requesting my immediate assistance in Singapore.

It was then that I truly stepped onto the film stage, rushing to Southeast Asia to join forces with my third brother, Shan Ke, to create the legendary story of the 'Shaw Brothers Film Kingdom'.

At that time, I was nineteen years old, having just graduated from the YMCA high school run by Americans. After arriving in Southeast Asia, my brother and I, based on our circumstances, devised a practical solution. Unable to rent a theater to screen films, we rented open space, set up canvas tents, and posted posters on the streets to screen films produced by 'Tianyi Film Company'.

Every day at dawn, as the east was just beginning to lighten, my brother and I were already busily working. We each had our own tasks. My third brother was in charge of cleaning the venue, checking the projector, and setting up the canvas tent; I, on the other hand, wrote the names and descriptions of the films to be shown that day on posters, then carried a bucket of glue and went from street to street posting them. By the time we two had finished these essential tasks methodically, the sun was just rising. We would then begin the early morning screenings, welcoming the first audience.

By the time we saw off the last audience member, it was already past midnight. We would then have to dismantle the canvas tent and pack up the projector, often working until the rooster crowed before we could go to sleep…

Day after day, we worked tirelessly from dawn till dusk. Because of the continuous supply of films from our Shaw Brothers, their business flourished, gradually expanding from Singapore to major ports throughout Malaya.

Being observant and attentive, I noticed that many small towns and remote villages in Malaya at that time had no cinemas at all, and audiences had no chance to see movies. I carefully analyzed the situation: if we could develop the market in these places and bring films there for screening, we would definitely win over audiences.

I immediately offered my advice to my third brother, Guang San Ge. Doing business is like waging war; we have little capital, so we need to be flexible. I noticed that many small towns in Malaysia don't have movies, so we could tap into that market. Since there are no theaters, we could set up a mobile cinema, complete with a projector, screen, and seats. Then we could go to the countryside, delivering films to people's homes, attracting a large rural audience

. My third brother readily agreed. We bought a small, old truck, and after some "disguise," our

mobile cinema was born. Our Shao brothers' mobile cinema was probably the earliest mobile cinema

in Chinese film history. My third brother and I drove the mobile cinema, shuttling through the towns and villages of Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Malacca, and Penang, bringing joy and happiness to those who lacked entertainment…

To our surprise, this gypsy-style "mobile cinema" was extremely popular. Wherever we went, crowds thronged, a truly spectacular sight.

What my third brother and I remember most vividly was the screening in a rubber village in Ipoh.

That day, our car broke down en route, and a sudden downpour made the roads muddy and difficult to navigate, delaying our arrival at the screening location. We were supposed to arrive at 2 PM, but ended up arriving at 7 PM.

To our surprise, the kind and simple villagers had been waiting for us in the rain for a long time. They greeted us with gongs and drums, and set off firecrackers, creating a joyous and lively scene, like welcoming triumphant heroes. One offered towels to wipe our sweat, another brought refreshing tea, and still others busily helped unload the equipment… After the screening, the entire village, young and old, reluctant to part, saw us off for miles.

This traveling screening tour, while revitalizing our business, opening up the market, and generating profits, involved hardships and obstacles that are unimaginable to most people.

Malaya has a tropical climate, hot year-round, with unbearable heat. The sheer number of flies and mosquitoes is unbearable. We, the Shaw brothers, worked constantly in an environment of mosquito bites. After each film screening, our bodies were covered in large, red, swollen welts, incredibly itchy, and filled with unbearable suffering. Unable to bear the bites any longer, we simply wore long sleeves and trousers, completely covering ourselves to resist the mosquito attacks. You can imagine how unbearable it was during the sweltering heat of midsummer. After each day's work, we were soaked to the bone, as if pulled from a pool of water, our clothes drenched in sweat. One day, in Kanchanaburi, Penang, we brothers were screening a film. It was a scorching July, exceptionally hot and humid. Exhausted from days of work, coupled with the lack of breathability in my clothes, I gradually gave in and finally collapsed from exhaustion

in the vast, desolate forest where the film was being shown. The towering tropical trees blocked out the sun, allowing only a sliver of light to penetrate. My third brother and I trudged through the thorny, sparsely populated forests of Malacca. Our purpose was to show a film to the forest workers living in the area. There were no main roads, so cars couldn't get through. We, the Shaw brothers, carried the projector on our shoulders and in our hands, slowly making our way along the rugged path. The path was completely blocked by dense vegetation, filled with thorny bushes and weeds. Before long, my third brother's hand was already bleeding profusely from a cut. I had to pull out my knife and cut through the thorns and bushes. They hacked away at one section, walked another, repeating this arduous journey...

Suddenly, the third brother, walking at the back, felt a cold wind blow against the back of his head. Sensing something was wrong, he turned to dodge, only to see a spotted leopard lunging at him with its jaws wide open.

It was the local native hunters who arrived just in time, firing repeatedly and killing the leopard, saving the third brother's life.

It turned out that the forest workers, worried that the Shao brothers hadn't arrived for so long, had sent several local hunters to meet them. They happened to encounter this terrifying scene on the way and immediately came to the rescue, saving the third brother from danger. "If we had arrived any later, the consequences would have been unimaginable..."

Run Run Shaw still felt a lingering fear as he spoke. "My third brother, still shaken, immediately threw himself into the intense work of screening films. Just as we were wandering and struggling, Penang's richest man, Wang Jingcheng, generously offered his assistance. From that time on, we began to own our own cinema chain. We made our first fortune operating 'New World Amusement Park,' and they launched a massive acquisition spree of cinemas.

We Shaw brothers relied on a mobile, gypsy-style operation, taking each step steadily and surely. This initial accumulation proved very effective; soon, our 'mobile projection van' had grown to six films. During this time, my third brother changed his name back to his original name, Shao Renmei.
