My Policewoman Lover [Complete] - 5

Chapter Thirty-Four: Love During the Educated Youth Era.

The night was alluring, the stars twinkling and smiling. The two spent a blissful spring evening together. Watching the little tiger's braids sway shyly in the night breeze, her delicate and obedient figure disappearing from sight, Liu Jing reluctantly withdrew his gaze, his heart still bright.

A gentle breeze, carrying the damp air, blew as Liu Jing drove off. The night wind sobered him up, and amidst his excitement, he felt a pang of frustration. Such an intimate moment, such close contact—how could he have missed kissing her?

"So tacky, so useless!" Liu Jing cursed himself inwardly, returning home with a sweet annoyance. Happiness is the accumulation of everyday moments, while one-time satisfaction is like a full-service package in certain places—he understood the difference.

Fang Xi entered the house; Zheng's mother, wearing pajamas, was leaning against the sofa watching TV. Although it was just the mother and daughter, the home was still warm and cozy. Seeing her daughter return, Chen Lin smiled and asked, "You're back! Did you have fun?"

"It was alright." Fang Xi was shy, her pretty face flushed, trying hard to appear nonchalant as she hurried back to her room. Chen Lin glanced back and smiled with satisfaction.

A short while later, Fang Xi changed her clothes, came out, and sat down next to her mother, picking up a large apple. Chen Lin turned off the TV and tilted her head to her daughter, saying, "Tell Mom what you did tonight?"

"Nothing much, just watched a movie!" The little tiger leaned against her mother, moved her feet onto the sofa, and crossed her legs.

"Really? Hehe." Chen Lin suppressed a laugh and nudged her daughter. "I heard from Liu Jing that you haven't known him for very long. How long exactly? How did you meet?"

"Um, about a week." Fang Xi was a little embarrassed, munching on the apple, her little feet swinging rapidly.

"One week...one week and he's home!" Chen Lin clearly hadn't expected it to be so short. She quickly grabbed her daughter, "Tell Mom what magic that guy has that made him win over my precious daughter so quickly!"

"No way! He...he's just a scoundrel!" Fang Xi's face flushed, and she shook her head, saying, "I was mainly pestered by him, so I had no choice but to temporarily agree. We're not even officially a couple yet!"

Girls really can't hide anything. Chen Lin, being an experienced woman, could easily understand her daughter's thoughts. She teased, "Yuan Kai couldn't bring himself to do it before, but this time Xiao Liu had no choice. Sigh, Mom advises you to break up with him as soon as possible, so you don't get dumped again!"

"Mom, you still say that? It's all your fault! Besides, last time doesn't count at all, it's different from this time!" The little tiger twisted her body, pouting unhappily.

Chen Lin smiled and shook her head gently, saying, "You brought Xiao Liu home yourself, so of course Mom knows it's different. Tell Mom your heart, do you like him?"

The little tiger bit her lower lip, nodding earnestly to her mother, her eyes filled with shy anticipation, like a lost child desperately needing her mother's hand. Chen Lin smiled, her eyes filled with a tender affection, like the gentle sunshine of summer: "Then get along well with him. Mom likes this child too, and will support you." Fang

Xi frowned, complaining, "You said you liked Yuan Kai too, and kept urging me to get along with him, but what happened?"

"That's different," Chen Lin sighed. "Yuan Kai isn't a bad kid; most mothers would like him, he's the kind of son-in-law everyone would like. But Liu Jing is different; Mom likes him from the bottom of her heart. Mom isn't lying to you; Mom liked him at first sight."

"Really?" The little tiger looked helplessly at her mother, leaning forward and resting on her mother's lap. Her mother's words were well said, but she was still worried, because this time was different; she had fallen in love.

Chen Lin smiled and stroked her daughter's head, her eyes shining with the unique tenderness of a mother. The little tiger lay on her mother's lap, her big eyes blinking as she gazed at the shimmering night sky outside the window, as if the answers she sought lay there.

Chen Lin sighed softly and said, "Xiao Fang, in terms of future prospects, Yuan Kai might be better than her, but the most important thing for a woman is to find a man who loves her and is devoted to her. Mom thinks Liu Jing is much better."

"How do you know?" the little tiger tilted her head, looking innocent.

Chen Lin looked down at her daughter, her brows furrowing as she asked, "You didn't like Yuan Kai, and he dumped you; now you like him, and you're afraid he'll dump you too, am I right?"

"Yes." The little tiger nodded, her expression pitiful and heartbreaking.

Chen Lin helped her daughter up, her face softening. "Do you know why Mom likes Liu Jing? Because he's like your father."

"Him? Like my father?" Fang sat up abruptly, her face filled with disbelief. "My dad is so refined and elegant, everyone respects him. He... he's a complete scoundrel!"

"Hehe, you don't know that." Chen Lin leaned back on the sofa, her gaze gentle. "Actually, your dad is a scoundrel too. When he was pursuing me, he was stealing chickens and dogs, doing all sorts of things!" "

What?! Really?" Little Tiger's mouth dropped open, she couldn't believe it. Such a polite father, the father who had always been as sacred as a ship's lamp in her heart, would he have done such petty things?

"You don't believe me? Okay, Mom will tell you." Chen Lin kicked off her shoes and simply sat cross-legged on the sofa.

"Great!" Fang Xi ran to make her mother a cup of tea, then sat back down, ready to listen attentively to her parents' romantic history.

Chen Lin's eyebrows curved, her gaze distant, as if recalling something from long ago; Fang Xi sat beside her, her little hand supporting her chin, waiting quietly and patiently. Under the lamplight, a mother and daughter, different feelings, similar expectations.

Chen Lin held her teacup, the hot tea inside exuding a faint fragrance.

"I met your dad in the early 1970s. I had just started working in City C. Although we were both editors, we didn't know each other until we went to a farm for a life experience. Intellectuals, you know, everyone has to go down there. That's how we met, but it was just a brief encounter; I don't remember him much. Back then, many people were pursuing me, all younger than him, so I couldn't possibly remember him.

"The conditions on the farm were terrible, the food and lodging were awful, and I was a bit delicate. The life experience lasted a year, and it was tough. I was always gloomy. One day, I came back from work and found two boiled eggs under my pillow! Back then, that was a real treat; you might not get to eat them even once a month on the farm. Who was so kind? I thought about it for ages but couldn't figure it out, and I didn't dare say anything. Then I gritted my teeth, thought, 'What the heck, might as well eat them,' and secretly ran to the grove and ate them."

"If I were in his shoes, I would have eaten them too. " "Little Tiger chuckled. "How did you know it was my dad who gave it to you?" Chen Lin didn't say who gave it to her, but it was easy to guess.

"Don't worry, this is just the beginning." Chen Lin patted her daughter's head and said with a smile, "From then on, there were eggs every day, usually two, sometimes one. We ate them for several months. I secretly investigated many times, but I couldn't find out who did it. Finally, one day, something happened."

"My dad got caught stealing eggs?" Fang Xi asked worriedly.

"It wasn't your dad, he's very cunning. It was me, I got into trouble." Chen Lin patted her daughter's cheek and said with a smile, "I had a habit of writing a diary back then. Although I was quite careful, I couldn't help but complain sometimes. As a result, one of my roommates reported me, and that scoundrel even stole my diary and handed it in. By then, the climax of the movement had passed, and it wasn't a big deal. I didn't write anything too outrageous, but the farm secretary, in order to keep quiet, locked me in the cowshed and made me reflect on my actions for three days."

"Being locked up in the cowshed isn't so bad, you don't even have to work! But the key is that you can only eat one meal a day, how can I stand that! I eat eggs every day, my food standard is much higher, no one can compare to that!"

Chen Lin waved her hand, looking nonchalant yet indignant. The little tiger looked at his mother and giggled again.

Chen Lin continued to complain, "The cowshed stank horribly. I was cold and hungry, but everyone avoided me like the plague. Those brats who usually pester me, all they say are sweet words, but when it comes to the real thing, not one of them brings me food. By nightfall, I was almost starving to death when your dad came in with a chicken that had been stewing somewhere, looking like a thief."

"My dad stole a chicken again?" Fang Xi interrupted again.

“Yes, that’s right.” Chen Lin was in the middle of her story when she casually replied, “He was standing outside, knocking on the window. I was a young woman, and I was quite scared. It took me a while to finally speak. I asked him, ‘Who are you? What do you want?’ Your dad said, ‘I’m Old Zheng, Zheng Hongru, I’ve come to bring you some food.’ I knew your dad back then, but we hadn’t exchanged more than a few words, so

I didn’t recognize him. Zheng Hongru? That name sounds familiar. He explained for a long time outside, and I finally remembered. I said, ‘Thank you, Brother Zheng, I appreciate your kindness, but I don’t want to implicate you. You should leave now.’ Your dad said, ‘Stop talking nonsense ! You ate hundreds of eggs, all of which I stole!’”

Fang Xi burst out laughing, leaning on her mother’s shoulder, happy and intoxicated by her parents’ romantic love.

Speaking of her first love, Chen Lin’s face also blossomed with happiness, her wrinkles filled with smiles: “After hearing what he said, I didn’t hold back and ate the whole chicken.” "Your dad was waiting outside the whole time. After I finished eating, I handed him the bowl and bones. He even said, 'I haven't had any meat for months, why didn't you leave me some?'"

Fangxi couldn't help but nestle in her mother's arms, giggling. Chen Lin sighed softly and happily hugged her daughter. The living room lights shone softly, and the stars outside the window twinkled, seemingly immersed in the happiness of the mother and daughter.

After laughing, Fangxi looked obediently at her mother. Chen Lin hugged her daughter and continued, "Well, your dad brought me food for three days, all delicious food, I didn't want to go out anymore. After I was released, your dad secretly asked me out and directly told me to marry him. I was just over twenty, the perfect age, but your dad was old and ugly, how could I do that!"

"How could my dad be old and ugly? He was so charming!" Fangxi pushed her mother, indignant on behalf of her deceased father.

"Silly girl, your dad was just that type, he looked old when he was young, but he looks young when he gets older!" Chen Lin rolled her eyes at her daughter, seemingly still resentful about what happened back then.

The little tiger smiled mischievously and said nothing more.

Chen Lin, tired of talking, took a sip of tea: "Then your dad started acting like a liar, saying that all those eggs and good things were for my future wife, and if I didn't agree, I'd have to give them all back. I said, 'Brother Zheng, aren't you forcing me? How can you be so unreasonable?' He then said, 'I don't care, either you marry me, or you give me back my things.'"

“I’m not one to be trifled with either. I steeled myself and said, ‘You have nothing to offer, nothing to offer, but you can have my life. You decide what to do!’ Your dad said, ‘Fine, I’ll go and confess to the Party Secretary right now. I’ll say that I stole the eggs and the stuff, and you ate them all. Let’s both be criticized together!’ He actually went after me. I was dumbfounded. I hurriedly chased after him and caught him at the Party Secretary’s door. That’s how your dad forced me to agree. Don’t you think he’s a scoundrel?”

Fangxi laughed so hard she could barely breathe in her mother’s arms.

After Chen Lin finished speaking, she helped her daughter up: "Xiao Fang, since you like Liu Jing, just be good to him. Love isn't something you can hesitate about. If the conditions are similar in all aspects, just follow your heart. If you like him, go for it. If he wants to be crazy, go for it. Just do whatever makes you happy, it's not a big deal. Times have changed. If you keep hesitating, someone might snatch him away one day!"

Fang Xi shrank back and said to her mother, "Then... I'll listen to you and agree to be with him?" Chen Lin couldn't help but smile: "You're already like this after only a few days. What difference does it make whether you agree or not?"

"It's the same!" Fang Xi said aggrievedly, "If I don't agree, I can't be his girlfriend; if I'm not his girlfriend, I'll feel better if something unexpected happens later."

"Marriages can end in divorce, aren't you just burying your head in the sand?" Chen Lin was both amused and exasperated.

Fang Xi fell silent. Chen Lin yawned, drank her tea, and pushed her away, saying, "Mom's sleepy, I should go to bed. Think about it yourself. Times have changed, Mom won't interfere." She then walked towards her room.

Fangxi knelt on the sofa, watching her mother's back, and suddenly asked, "Mom, do you miss Dad?"

"Not really, not that much." Chen Lin turned around, spreading her hands, and said, "He's dead, so what? What's there to think about? It was a little early, though. If two people are comfortable together, and the living are happy, that's enough. What's the use of thinking about it?"

Fangxi asked again, "Have you thought about finding someone else?"

"Of course I have! After you get married, Mom will be so bored!" Chen Lin said decisively, "You were still studying then, now you've graduated and started working. Once you and Liu Jing are almost settled, Mom will have to think about herself!"

"Oh," Fangxi responded softly.

Chen Lin yawned again, "Mom really needs to sleep now, you should go to sleep early too." With that, she swayed into her room.

In the quiet of the night, Fangxi hugged a large cushion, sat on the sofa, lost in thought, a faint smile on her face. Her parents' love story was interesting and romantic, and more importantly, she had discovered another side of her father, and also discovered a similarity between her lover and her father.

Chapter Thirty-Five: Xu Yan's first

love made her feel good about herself, and Liu Jing was already a self-confident person. Two self-confidences combined made him feel awesome, incredibly awesome. The next morning, Liu Jing went to work feeling incredibly awesome.

The late spring weather was clear, but it couldn't compare to the heat in his heart.

Standing on the crowded bus, gazing at the fresh scenery outside the window, his thoughts flowed like the crowds on the street. His relationship with Little Tiger was developing unexpectedly smoothly; the exciting moment was not far off, and his long-held dream was within reach. He was planning how to close a few big deals, then buy a car, and then pick Little Tiger up and drop him off at work every day, the two of them together, and, well, Little Tiger's mother too, living a beautiful life together.

Filled with beautiful anticipation for the future, Liu Jing entered the company building and went straight to the finance department. Xu Yan had told him not to go, but how could he not go? More importantly, Xu Yan would definitely be waiting for him.

The finance department was a small office, two people per room. Liu Jing knocked twice and then pushed the door open. As expected, only Xu Yan was in the room, sitting listlessly in front of the computer. She only glanced at him when she saw him arrive.

"What are you doing here? Why are you here so early today?" Liu Jing turned his back, closed the door, and walked over with a grin. Xu Yan turned her chair to face the computer: "Why are you here? Didn't I tell you not to come today?"

"Why can't I come? Don't I come often?" Liu Jing pulled up a chair and sat down next to her.

"That was before. You haven't come for months!" Xu Yan pouted, her expression somewhat forlorn.

That sounded like something a mistress would say. Liu Jing didn't waste any more words, nudging her and saying, "Hey, Xu Yan, I'm really sorry about last night. Please don't take it to heart!"

"Can we not talk about last night?" Xu Yan grabbed a newspaper from that day and flipped through it casually.

"Okay, I won't mention it." Liu Jing leaned closer and asked, "Xu Yan, do you think I'm stupid?"

"Forget it, I'm the stupid one." Xu Yan threw down the newspaper and fiddled with her fingers.

The little girl's expression was heartbreaking; her big eyes blinked, as if something painful was flashing within them. He didn't know if anyone had hurt those eyes, but he was certain he had last night.

Liu Jing tugged at her sleeve and said bluntly, "Xu Yan, how about this? I'll invite you out another day, and if you don't go, I'll make you wait like an idiot until midnight, so you can vent your anger. How about that?"

Xu Yan chuckled, finally turning her chair around and giving him a disapproving look. "Come on, you already have a girlfriend, why are you still asking me out?"

Liu Jing laughed. "We're best friends at the company, why can't I ask you out? What does it have to do with having a girlfriend?"

"Aren't you afraid your girlfriend will find out?" Xu Yan stared at him, seemingly very serious. Liu Jing hesitated. "What's there to be afraid of? We've even eaten KFC together before! I'll treat you another day."

"Even if you treat me, I won't go. It's not like I can't get married." Xu Yan got up and walked to the window, sunlight shining on her radiant face.

What's this girl thinking? Liu Jing followed her. "Of course, who is our Xu Yan? She's in charge of the money, and she has a whole bunch of suitors chasing after her!"

"You don't need to tell me!" Xu Yan blushed, a mixture of laughter and reproach, a hint of grievance in her expression. Her slender hands casually fiddled with a small potted plant on the windowsill. She had felt unwell all night, but now, the hazy feeling was gone, things were clear, and she felt much lighter.

Xu Yan's mood improved, and Liu Jing was also relieved. Looking at the small flowerpot, he laughed and said, "Stop messing with it, you'll kill it!"

"I want to! What's it to you?" Xu Yan retorted, rolling her eyes defiantly. Just

as Liu Jing was about to say something, the door was suddenly pushed open.

"Xu Yan, that form from yesterday..." A middle-aged woman leaned against the door, paused when she saw Liu Jing, then quickly closed the door and left. The two looked at each other and couldn't help but chuckle.

The woman was Luo Yun, the deputy manager of the finance department, a woman with a troubled sex life, or so Liu Jing assumed. When Xu Yan first joined the company, they were the only two recent graduates, so they naturally spent a lot of time together. One lunchtime, while sitting together, Luo Yun, whether due to some kind of shock, menstrual irregularity, or menopausal symptoms, accused Xu Yan of making a mistake in some report, giving the young woman a thorough dressing-down in the cafeteria without any mercy. Liu Jing, unable to bear it, launched into a tirade, nearly splashing soup in her face. After that, Deputy Manager Luo would avoid him whenever he saw him.

This was the direct consequence. The indirect consequence was that everyone in the company became very polite to Liu Jing after that, and even Xu Yan was respected. As two newcomers, this was truly remarkable.

After laughing, Liu Jing asked, "Does she still bully you?"

"Just a normal superior-subordinate relationship, I guess." Xu Yan shook her head, her eyes lingering, as if reminiscing about those days. Liu Jing said proudly, "If she dares to bully you, just tell me, and I'll teach her a lesson."

Xu Yan smiled but didn't continue, finally unable to resist asking, "Liu Jing, when did you and... that member of the Municipal Youth League Committee get together?"

"Well, the day you told me." Liu Jing said awkwardly. Xu Yan pouted, feeling wronged, "Did I tell you? You were like a lost soul that day, I thought it was because of me!"

Liu Jing smiled bitterly and didn't say anything. If it weren't for Xu Yan's gossipy mouth, he wouldn't have been so upset, he wouldn't have been forced to drink by the "little tiger," and their relationship wouldn't have developed so quickly. In a sense, this was an unexpected outcome, and it could be considered a direct help from Xu Yan.

Life is unpredictable, and matters of the heart, especially marriage, are even more so.

Xu Yan looked up and tentatively asked, "Liu Jing, how far have things progressed between you and her? Tell me."

"How far... can I tell you that?" Liu Jing was both amused and exasperated. Putting everything else aside, with this girl's gossipy tongue, even if he had eight times the courage, he wouldn't dare say.

"Why can't I say?" Xu Yan said sourly, clearly annoyed. "Last night, I paid 120 yuan for that big private room, and she got it for free! Why?" Liu Jing was

speechless. He glanced at his watch and said goodbye, "Xu Yan, it's time to go to work. I won't chat with you anymore. You're busy. I'm going back to my office. If you need anything, just let me know. Don't be shy." He turned to leave.

"Hey!" Xu Yan quickly grabbed his sleeve, staring at him and asking, "Liu Jing, you said you wanted to go on a date with me, is that true?"

It seems I said KFC, not a date, right? Liu Jing was taken aback, then immediately pulled his arm back: "Xu Yan, you really want to go on a date with me? I was just saying!"

"Why can't I? You've only known her for a few days!" Xu Yan seemed confident now, and stepped forward abruptly, "I've known you for eight months, and you've only ever treated me to KFC once!"

"So what? That was my first and only time eating KFC!" Liu Jing said solemnly. This kid is talking nonsense, what kind of first time is that?

"What is that?" Xu Yan put her hands on her hips and said angrily, "According to you, I've never bought a private room before, and I haven't even used it myself, what are you going to do about it? You have to pay me back!"

"You've got to be serious, the Municipal Youth League Committee is very powerful! If she finds out, I'll definitely be torn to pieces, you'd better spare me!" With this kind of effect from saying it was my first time, Liu Jing quickly fled in a panic.

"Hey! You stop right there! Pay me back for the private room?" Xu Yan shouted at the door.

"No discussion, no payment!" Liu Jing's voice came from the corridor.

Xu Yan stomped her foot in frustration, both annoyed and confused. "I'm no less attractive than the Municipal Youth League Committee member, and I earn more than her. It's been so long, why doesn't he like me?"

Chapter Thirty-Six: A Touch of Compassion

Having escaped Xu Yan as if fleeing, Liu Jing felt much lighter. Xu Yan was simple and kind, basically the kind of person who was carefree. She could hold a grudge for a long time over a small matter, or be silly and happy all day long. The fact that the two were laughing and joking as usual meant that everything was over.

As soon as Liu Jing entered the office, he saw Wen Xiang waving a newly signed contract, boasting: "How about it? A 2.7 million deal, not bad, right? Who says not having female clients means losing half the money? I'm not doing anything with women anymore, I'll only work with men! That slut from the Municipal Youth League Committee, she's the end of the road!"

These words were too ambiguous, and everyone immediately burst into laughter, seizing the opportunity to kick him while he was down.

"Old Wen, your back door isn't clean, don't get sick!"

"Old Li, are you stupid? Doesn't Old Wen wear a condom?"

"You're the stupid one, Old Wen's skin is long enough, safer than a condom!"

"Hahahaha..."

Wen Xiang's already lewd face was so embarrassed he couldn't bear to look anymore, so he simply went all out: "Go away! I don't have any problems, I don't wear condoms, I just get pregnant, who doesn't believe me, come on now?"

Amidst the laughter, Liu Jing walked over, and Wen Xiang saw him and said: "Oh, Little Liu, you're here. Sorry, I have some bad news for you, I'm not doing female clients anymore, you probably won't get any more benefits from me, good luck!"

Liu Jing laughed: "I should be the one saying sorry, I've already gotten the biggest benefit."

Everyone was stunned and turned their eyes to him. Liu Jing straightened his back and said with no small amount of pride: "Old Wen, that Municipal Committee member... will be my wife from now on."

"Wow—!" After a brief moment of surprise and silence, everyone exclaimed in unison. Wen Xiang felt a little guilty, patted Liu Jing on the shoulder, and said sincerely, "Little Liu, I wish you all the best. Sometimes I don't pay attention to what I say, it's just a habit, I didn't mean anything by it, don't take it to heart. If you ever need my help in the future

, just let me know." Liu Jing was moved and said, "Old Wen, don't say that, you don't know the situation, I'm already thanking you!"

"Little Liu, don't just thank me, this is such a great thing, you should treat everyone to a meal to celebrate, right?" someone else started to tease. Another person chimed in, "Yeah, bring her over so we can meet her, she's our sister-in-law after all!"

"No problem, I'll definitely treat everyone to a meal, and you'll all be there for the wedding, okay?" Liu Jing was in a good mood and joked along.

"Damn! You're so greedy, you're bringing this all into the wedding?"

"Too far? I'll treat everyone to lunch at the cafeteria!"

"Hahaha..."

A noisy morning passed, and Liu Jing returned the car keys to Li Desheng: "Thank you, Lao Li, I won't borrow your car again." Little Tiger didn't like him borrowing his car, and he remembered that remark.

Li Desheng, with a cigarette in his mouth, looked at him and asked, "Did you really find the right one this time?"

Liu Jing nodded, then shamelessly said, "Lao Li, you're my mentor, so if you have any good connections or big jobs you can't handle, introduce them to me. I need to earn money to support my family!"

Li Desheng glared coldly and snatched the car keys back: "Then I'll borrow your car."

After lunch, Liu Jing came out of the cafeteria, and his phone rang. It was Guo Guo. Following the bathhouse incident, the public security organs launched a large-scale operation against similar businesses throughout the city with lightning speed. The Yulong Bathhouse had been shut down, and all the criminals, including the corrupt police officers, had received their due punishment. The police had promised to compensate the taxi drivers for their losses, including Lu Qiuyang's medical expenses and his car, using the confiscated illegal assets. All of this was thanks to Miss Guo's background.

"Guo Guo, what's up?" Liu Jing asked. Guo Guo replied, "Last time we were arrested, I left my electric scooter at that bathhouse. It's still at the police station. I haven't been feeling well these past few days, could you get it for me?"

"Not feeling well?" Liu Jing pressed closer to the phone, asking urgently, "What's wrong? Are you sick? Or did you get into trouble again?"

"Nothing, I just don't feel well, don't ask." Guo Guo's voice sounded a little tense, then she slowly added, "Liu Jing, once I get the scooter, I'll leave it at your place. I'll come pick it up when I have time. You have to treat me to a meal then, okay? Don't delay any longer!"

"Okay, that's settled then. Take care of yourself." Liu Jing finished speaking and prepared to hang up.

"Hey, Liu Jing!" Guo Guo quickly called out to him.

"Is there anything else?"

Guo Guo paused for a moment, then said weakly, "Liu Jing, my mom asked me how your injury is healing. I said it's fine, and she said she wants to treat you to a meal to thank you properly. My brother, sister-in-law, and dad will also be there. When are you free?"

"A meal? Can't you have a little more refined taste?" Liu Jing became inexplicably angry. "Your mom misunderstood us the other day, almost treating me like her son-in-law. Aren't you going to explain to her properly? What's the point of having a meal?"

Guo Guo paused, pouting, "I... I explained to them. The meal... is because you helped me, and they wanted to show their appreciation." After a slight pause, Guo Guo added, "Liu Jing, my dad is very busy, but he only agreed to make time because of you."

Liu Jing frowned, thought for a moment, and said, "Guo Guo, didn't your parents treat you at school last time? Just tell them, I appreciate it. Besides, it's May Day the day after tomorrow. I haven't been back since the Spring Festival, and I want to stay a few more days this time."

"It's okay, we can wait until you come back after May Day, but you absolutely can't back out!" This meal was too important to Guo Guo; her heart was pounding with nervousness.

"Alright then, we'll talk about it after May Day."

Putting away his phone, Liu Jing felt a bit of a headache. Guo Guo was, after all, a classmate, so it was easy to talk to her, but he really didn't want to see Vice Governor Guo and his wife, especially Bai Xiaoqing. Back then, when he shielded Guo Guo from that wheel stunt, Guo Ting and his wife rushed over in a panic. He was afraid his parents would worry, so he didn't dare tell his family. Bai Xiaoqing took a long leave and took care of him in the hospital for a month. After the bathhouse incident, Bai Xiaoqing changed her address from "Little Liu" to "Little Jing." Even if he were an idiot, he would understand what was going on.

He could handle it, but Guo Guo was the daughter of a high-ranking official, and a girl at that; it was better to be careful.

In the afternoon at work, Liu Jing carefully organized the client information in his hands, preparing to make a concerted effort after May Day. As a salesman, he had made numerous requests, practically scouring the entire city of S where he could find connections, even digging up a few of his high school classmates. But for some reason, he had never asked Guo Guo for help.

The day after tomorrow was May Day, and with nothing important to do, Liu Jing grabbed a small bag and headed out to the police station to pick up Guo Guo's

electric scooter. The two scoundrel chiefs had naturally packed up and gone home, but the other two junior officers were still there. A political instructor received him, respectfully returning the spotlessly clean electric scooter to him, practically escorting him for miles.

Liu Jing had never ridden an electric scooter before, but he didn't think much of it. Apparently, riding one was like a certain skill—basically self-taught. Sure enough, with a humming sound, he smoothly rode onto the road.

Liu Jing rode close to the side of the road, the wind carrying a damp scent. It was getting hot; summer was approaching, the season for girls to dress up in their finest attire was almost here. He thought of his passionate love, pondering how to convince Little Tiger to take her home to meet his parents. He had already met Little Tiger's mother, so there was no reason not to introduce her to his family.

"Mom's eyes are practically blue with joy, she'll be so happy," he thought.

Just then, his phone rang. It must be Little Tiger! Liu Jing quickly pulled the car over to the side of the road and took out his phone. It wasn't Little Tiger, it was Qin Yuxia. They hadn't seen each other for several days since they parted ways at the hospital, hadn't called, and hadn't been on QQ.

He answered, "Yuxia, what's up?"

"Are your eyes better?" Yuxia asked instead of answering.

"Yes, they're better the next day. What's up?" Liu Jing asked again.

"When are you taking Duoduo to the park? She keeps asking for it." Yuxia's tone was gentle, a gentleness unlike any other. "What are your plans for the May Day holiday? Can you spend a day playing with Duoduo?"

Liu Jing felt a pang of guilt and stammered, "I haven't been home since the Spring Festival. My parents aren't feeling well, and I want to spend more time with them, but I'm afraid..."

Yuxia was silent for a long time, then said, holding her breath, "Then after May Day, find a Sunday when you're not busy?"

This time it was Liu Jing's turn to be silent. Yuxia's previous silence represented anger; his silence now represented reluctance. He didn't know what to say, so he remained silent. Yuxia waited on the other end of the phone, also silent, with only the constant flow of traffic around them—such a restless city.

"Liu Jing, you're something else, really something!" Yuxia finally couldn't hold back any longer and exploded, "You're a real man, a true gentleman! I, Qin Yuxia, was foolish and blind to have chosen you!"

Yuxia cursed him and hung up the phone.

Liu Jing sighed and put his phone away. He didn't want it to be this way, he really didn't, but he had no choice. He could still distinguish between what he should and shouldn't do. His ideal life was just ahead, within reach, and he had no reason to destroy it all.

The afternoon was a bit hot, and he wiped his sweat as he headed towards the Municipal Youth League Committee.

Not far along, at an intersection, a van swerved and struck the front wheel of an elderly cyclist. The old man fell heavily, screaming and rolling on the ground, blood spilling from his mouth. The van, of course, fled the scene, disappearing in a flash.

Liu Jing witnessed this tragedy, and the indifferent, apathetic glances of passersby. These days, whoever meddles gets hurt—he understood that, and complied, but he still felt an indescribable pain. He remembered Lu Qiuyang's words: "Is there any hope for our society?"

He slowly drove past the old man, like any other passerby. He tried hard to resist turning back, but the old man's hand clutched his chest, trembling on the ground, the pained expression on his face, blood trickling from his mouth, was impossible to shake off! He sighed helplessly and finally turned the car around. Not seeing him was one thing, but to simply abandon him like this was unbearable!

"At worst, I'll just consider it bad luck today," Liu Jing said calmly. He didn't care what kind of society he was in, and he didn't want to be a saint or shout for anyone, but watching helplessly as someone died was painful enough.

Liu Jing also considered calling, but the speed at which he could get help was too slow, and besides, calling would just lead to an investigation. He figured he might as well do a good deed and earn some good karma.

Liu Jing parked his electric scooter by the roadside, locked it, and rushed over: "Grandpa, how are you?" The old man struggled to lift his head, a glimmer of light appearing in his eyes. Liu Jing quickly assessed him, then carefully lifted the old man, whose body was covered in blood.

"Young man, thank... thank you." The old man, barely breathing, tilted his head and fainted in Liu Jing's arms.

Liu Jing carried the old man, trying to hail a taxi, but taxi drivers waved him away as if avoiding a plague. He cursed incessantly, carrying the old man half a block in full view of onlookers, finally managing to flag down a cab.

After getting in, Liu Jing settled the old man in the car and instructed the driver to go to the nearest hospital. The taxi driver, holding the meter, glanced back at Liu Jing with a strange look in his eyes, seemingly hesitant.

Liu Jing, still annoyed, snapped, "Just drive! I'll give you more money, even the car wash, okay?"

The taxi driver, clearly understanding, sighed and withdrew his hand. "Fine, I'll do something stupid too. These days, people's hearts have been eaten by dogs, damn it!" The

driver's grumbling deeply moved Liu Jing, a surge of emotion coursing through him. Who says our society is hopeless? Even though people's hearts have changed and the world is cold, good people still exist!

The driver sped off, driving through several streets before stopping. Liu Jing glanced at the sign: Weikang Hospital. Weikang was a large hospital, and more importantly, a designated hospital for the traffic police. The driver was much more level-headed than Liu Jing.

The two of them quickly lifted the elderly man inside and rushed him to the emergency room. A young female doctor greeted them: "What happened? What's wrong with this person?"

"Car accident," Liu Jing replied.

"Any external injuries?"

"It doesn't seem so." Liu Jing hesitated; he didn't think so.

"Put him on the bed first." The female doctor pulled over a portable hospital bed.

The two men did as she said, and two nurses rushed forward to help the doctor examine the elderly man. Liu Jing and the taxi driver stood to the side; the driver looked shifty and nervous, while Liu Jing was nonchalant, glancing around. Three small signs were pasted under the electronic Hitachi on the wall, one reading: "On-Duty Doctor: Shen Meng."

Shen Meng, a beautiful name. Liu Jing turned to look; the female doctor was bending over, her gaze refined and elegant, her long, flowing black hair cascading down her back. She was a woman of both beauty and wisdom, gentle and radiant, like a fragrant orchid under the moon.

"The patient needs to be taken to the CT room; push the bed with me," the female doctor said succinctly after the examination.

Liu Jing immediately went over, while the taxi driver hesitated for a moment before following. As they exited the emergency room, the taxi driver grabbed Liu Jing's arm. "Buddy, sorry, I have to go. I can't stay with you any longer."

"Oh, thank you, bro." Liu Jing looked at him gratefully; giving him money at this moment was clearly inappropriate. The taxi driver nodded, a hint of reluctance in his eyes. "Buddy, listen to me, get him there quickly and leave. Don't let anyone try to extort you!" "

I know." Liu Jing's feelings were complicated. There were too many cases of people being extorted after saving lives these days; he knew all too well.

The taxi driver left, and Liu Jing followed behind the doctor. The two of them, pushing and pulling, got the hospital bed into the private elevator. As the elevator slowly started moving, Liu Jing said, "Doctor, after we get him there, can I leave now?"

"Leave?" The doctor's expression remained unchanged, looking at him with confusion. Liu Jing explained, "He was hit by a car. I just happened to be passing by and didn't know him at all. Can you treat him first, and then ask his relatives for money?"

The doctor was surprised, a glimmer of light appearing in his eyes: "If the patient is alright, of course there's no problem. But I'm afraid... his internal organs are damaged, so he'll need surgery immediately."

"So what?" Liu Jing's question was really naive.

The doctor looked troubled: "Our hospital has a rule that surgery can't be performed without payment."

"Aren't you a designated hospital for traffic accidents? Shouldn't you treat him first?" Liu Jing was not only honest but also innocent.

The doctor tilted his head, making a helpless gesture.

"Then check his pockets, maybe he has some money on him?" Liu Jing paused, then came up with a new idea.

"Well, someone needs to sign the surgical liability form too." The female doctor was extremely troubled, looking at him with almost unbearable pity.

Liu Jing had a headache, thought for a moment, and said, "Fine, I'll go all the way!" He readily agreed. Arguing with the hospital was pointless, but he couldn't just stand by and do nothing. Since he'd brought the person here, he had no choice but to stay.

The female doctor smiled faintly, her eyes bright as she looked at him, her expression beautiful. As a doctor, she felt helpless; but as an ordinary person, she was even more moved.

Chapter Thirty-Seven: Not Ashamed to Ask for Help

. After getting the elderly man into the CT room, Liu Jing sat down helplessly on a chair outside the door. This was the best time to leave, but he didn't. He didn't want to be a fool. Whether staying here was a foolish thing to do was still uncertain. Since he had chosen to bring the person here, he felt he should stay—it was that simple.

Not long after, the female doctor came out: "Spleen ruptured, might need to be removed."

"Okay." Liu Jing looked up at her.

The doctor gave him a reassuring smile and silently handed him the surgical responsibility form.

Liu Jing didn't even look at it, and signed his name in a few strokes. This form had been proven to be unfair to patients and their families, and had even lost its legal effect, but he still had to sign it.

After signing the form, Liu Jing casually asked, "Does your hospital have an ATM?"

"There's one right next to the payment counter," the doctor replied, putting away the responsibility sheet. "I'll arrange the surgery right away. Go pay."

"Thank you," Liu Jing sighed inwardly, got up, and left, his back not particularly imposing.

Liu Jing withdrew the money, making up five thousand yuan in cash, and joined the long queue to pay. Just as he reached the top of the stairs, the female doctor gracefully descended, handing him a plastic bag: "The patient has been taken to the operating room on the fourth floor. These are his belongings; there's a cell phone inside. Try to contact his family."

"Thank you," Liu Jing glanced at it casually. Besides forty-odd yuan, there was only a cell phone; there wasn't even an ID card.

The doctor nodded and silently returned to the emergency room, leaving a deep impression.

Watching her pristine figure, Liu Jing felt another wave of emotion. These days, people often talk about medical ethics and teacher ethics, but that's just the prevailing trend; it has nothing to do with specific doctors or teachers. They didn't make the rules. At least, he felt this young female doctor was a good person.

Liu Jing sat outside the operating room, flipping through the old man's phone book. He dialed a number called "Xiao Chun," thinking it might be his daughter or son.

"Hello, who is this?" A middle-aged man's voice answered. Liu Jing said, "Hello, this phone belongs to an elderly man. He was hit by a car. I saw him on the street and took him to the hospital. Do you know who he is?"

"What?! Hit by a car? How badly?" the middle-aged man asked anxiously.

"The doctor said his spleen was ruptured, and he's having surgery. Who are you to him?"

"I'm his son. Which hospital is he in? We'll be there soon," the man asked. Liu Jing told him the hospital's name and added, "I've already paid 5,000 yuan. Please bring more money when you come. I have to leave immediately."

"No problem, no problem," the man readily agreed, then cautiously asked, "What's your name? Which organization do you work for?" A sense of unease crept into Liu Jing's mind. He said calmly, "I'll wait for you to repay the money. I won't leave. Please come as soon as possible." He then hung up.

Without paying five thousand yuan upfront, Liu Jing would definitely have left, but now he couldn't. However, he wasn't stupid; with so many examples to back him up, just in case, he gritted his teeth, swallowed his pride, and proactively dialed Yu Xia's number—for the first time.

Having just coldly refused her on the phone, and now asking for her help, Liu Jing felt incredibly ashamed, utterly shameless. Sigh, who told him to meddle?

...

After berating Liu Jing, Yu Xia angrily hung up the phone and grabbed her water glass from her desk. She was heartbroken and desolate. She understood Liu Jing; what young man in his prime would want to be involved with a widow with a child? But understanding aside, she still felt resentment—resentment at the cruelty and cruelty of fate, and resentment at Liu Jing's heartlessness and indifference. Feelings are personal, and selfishness is inevitable.

Dong Le sat quietly beside her, her eyes filled with sympathy and heartache. She liked her captain and admired her strength, but felt helpless in the face of it all.

Yu Xia took a few sips of tea, then put down her glass: "Dong Le, why aren't you on duty? What are you doing standing here like an idiot?"

Dong Le looked innocent and aggrieved: "Captain, I'm just trying to keep you company. Even if you're in a bad mood, you can't take it out on me, can you?"

"What did I do to you! Isn't it right to ask you to be on duty?" Yu Xia glared at her.

Dong Le scoffed, complaining, "Going on duty every day is so annoying! Even the male officers aren't like this! Being a traffic cop is more tiring than being a prostitute!"

"How do you know being a prostitute is tiring? Have you ever been a prostitute?" Yu Xia retorted angrily, "What kind of talk is this at such a young age? Aren't you ashamed!"

Dong Le chuckled and leaned closer, saying, "Hey, Sister Qin, tell me, what's it like... is it really that good?"

"Go away! Don't ask questions you shouldn't ask. If you're so eager, just find a boyfriend to deflower you." Yu Xia stood up, holding her water glass, as if she was tired of sitting and wanted to walk a bit.

Dong Le blushed slightly, about to say something, when there was a knock at the door. Yu Xia quickly sat back down: "Come in!"

A young policewoman entered, a new recruit. She nodded to Dong Le and then said, "Captain, I'd like to ask for a day off tomorrow."

"Where's the form? Did you fill it out?" Yu Xia asked coldly.

The policewoman paused, slowly glancing at Dong Le beside her, and quickly said, "I'll fill it out right away."

The little guy went out, and Dong Le chuckled.

"What are you laughing at? What's so funny?" Yu Xia asked irritably.

Dong Le teased, "Captain, Tian Yu, who never fills out forms when asking you for leave, is really unlucky; she's your punching bag." Tian Yu was the name of the young policewoman from earlier.

Yu Xia was taken aback, but couldn't help laughing too. Dong Le's teasing made her feel much better.

The two chatted for a while when the phone on the table rang; it was Liu Jing. Yu Xia's heart melted instantly. She cursed the little man under her breath, biting her lip as she answered the phone: "What? We're just a widow and her child, we wouldn't dare trouble you!"

Liu Jing broke out in a cold sweat, saying apologetically, "Yu Xia, I'm sorry, I... I'm calling to report a crime." "

Report a crime?" Yu Xia jumped up. "What happened? What did you do?"

Liu Jing briefly explained the situation. Yu Xia frowned. "Did you see the license plate number?" Liu Jing said, "No, the car was going too fast. I didn't think much of it, I didn't even think about rescuing anyone at first."

Yu Xia sighed, then clarified the location of the scene, instructing, "Listen, I'll be there right away. When the family arrives, don't waste time talking to them, I'll handle it when I get there." "

Okay, I'll listen to you." Liu Jing's attitude was very good.

"Why didn't you listen to me earlier? You little rascal." Yu Xia snorted and angrily hung up the phone.

Dong Le listened intently for a while, her eyes wide, and was about to ask what was going on when Yu Xia waved her hand: "Go, quickly call Tian Yu over here, you two come with me!"

Chapter Thirty-Eight: Iron-Fisted Yu Xia

The afternoon sun was blazing. Qin Yu Xia held the handlebars with one hand and the walkie-talkie in the other, skillfully riding the motorcycle, shouting loudly as she went, contacting nearby team members to come to the scene for maintenance. Dong Le and Tian Yu followed behind with bitter faces. They couldn't understand it. She was a squad leader, not on duty, why didn't she use a proper car and ride a motorcycle all day? Didn't she get tired of it?

Of course they didn't understand. Riding a motorcycle, speeding on the highway, Yu Xia felt her true self.

After making arrangements, Yu Xia put away the walkie-talkie, gripped the handlebars with both hands, and began to push. The motorcycle suddenly shot forward, weaving left and right on the highway, incredibly agile, constantly overtaking and moving forward. Yu Xia wasn't wearing a helmet, her long hair flowing passionately behind her head, her figure on the motorcycle was exceptionally agile, as swift as a female leopard. Dong Le and Tian Yu followed with difficulty.

The two team members they had contacted earlier had already arrived at the scene. Qin Yuxia got out of the car, quickly surveyed the area, and had a general idea of what was going on. She instructed the two to continue their work on-site while she led Dong Le and Tian Yu to the hospital.

...

Outside the operating room, Liu Jing sat quietly waiting, but his heart was far from calm. Human relationships are subtle. A virtual internet connection links distances that are both near and far. That feeling is wonderful, unrestrained, and peaceful, but meeting in person is completely different. He didn't dislike Yuxia, not at all, but he felt it shouldn't be like this, both for Yuxia herself and for the responsibility involved. The so-called guilt was only for Little Tiger; he had never felt it for Yuxia, never.

He sometimes wondered if this meant acceptance? Perhaps, but it still shouldn't be. Yuxia's care, tinged with affection and dependence, was hard for him to bear, along with her angelic beauty and devilish figure. He had no doubt that if this happened a few more times, he would go crazy sooner or later.

Liu Jing suddenly felt quite comfortable walking down the street. People brushed past him, and he didn't need to deliberately look around to find anything. Occasionally, he'd turn back, feeling like he was in another world, yet he wouldn't lose his bearings. Unfamiliarity, actually, was quite nice.

He heard hurried footsteps coming from the stairs, and two men and two women rushed over. Presumably the old man's relatives, he stopped his thoughts and stood up to greet them.

"Was it you who made the call?" the middle-aged man in the lead asked, sizing him up. He was the person on the phone.

"Yes. Did you bring the money?" Liu Jing countered. Damn, this was like a gangster transaction in a movie.

"Damn it! You hit someone and you still want money?" The younger man grabbed the front of his suit jacket and said viciously, "You little bastard, let me tell you, if anything happens to my dad, I'll fucking kill you!"

Liu Jing was prepared and showed no surprise or panic: "I'm your father's savior. The blood on my clothes is still wet. You don't have to thank me, but if you have any conscience, let go and apologize to me right now." His attitude was calm, but not polite at all. His eyes were deep and sharp, as if they were filled with rage, or as if they had seen through many things.

Liu Jing's attitude was completely unexpected to the four of them, and they were briefly stunned.

"These days, who would save someone if they're not related to them? Who would believe that? It must have been you!" The middle-aged woman was the first to react. Another young woman said, "Yes, definitely! Let me tell you, don't even think about getting the money back. If it's not enough, you'll have to pay for hospitalization, meals, and care—you'll have to provide everything!"

Liu Jing ignored the two shrewish women, stared at the young man, and pointed to his clothes: "Let go."

"Damn it, you think you're so tough? I'll fucking beat you up!" the young man roared, raising his fist as if to strike.

"Hey, second brother!" the middle-aged man quickly stopped him.

Liu Jing wasn't going to fall for it. Suddenly, he twisted the man's pulse with his left hand, and with a quick push of his right forearm, twisted both hands simultaneously.

"Ah!" the second brother screamed, his body bending backward. Liu Jing gave him a powerful push, and the guy stumbled back several steps, landing hard on a chair across the aisle, too afraid to move.

Enemy-capturing fist technique, here it comes again! Most people bully the weak and fear the strong; a nice face is useless—Liu Jing understood this principle.

The four men stared at each other, completely stunned. Many passing doctors and nurses were also taken aback. Liu Jing straightened his blood-stained clothes and sat down casually. "Believe it or not, I didn't save him for you. I've already called the police, and they'll be here soon. Whether I hit him or not, the police will investigate. Then it won't be enough for you to keep your money back!"

The middle-aged man straightened up. "Brother, don't worry, we won't try to extort you. As long as things are cleared up and it's definitely not you who hit him, we'll definitely return your money."

"I hope so," Liu Jing said calmly.

"What are you doing? What are you saying? You're still giving him money!" The middle-aged shrew rolled her eyes and shoved the middle-aged man. "Are you stupid? It must have been him. Who is he trying to fool?"

"Alright, alright, let's stop arguing. This is a hospital. They've already called the police. Let's wait for them to arrive." The middle-aged man was somewhat helpless, but there was still a hint of humanity in his voice.

The two couples sat down, glaring at Liu Jing as if afraid he might suddenly run away. Liu Jing remained nonchalant, seemingly oblivious to the four. He had a clear conscience and nothing to fear; at worst, he'd learn his lesson. More importantly, he had an inexplicable confidence in Yu Xia, believing she would handle things properly, both professionally and personally. The

four women were talking intermittently, and Liu Jing understood: the two men were brothers, and the two women were his daughters-in-law.

A short while later, the sound of clattering leather shoes echoed down the corridor—Yu Xia had arrived.

Upon seeing three female traffic police officers, the two brothers were stunned, while the two wives couldn't help but show envious glances. This wasn't surprising; the women's mounted police team had only eight members when it was established, and even now it only had twelve. Being selected meant they weren't ordinary candidates. Yu Xia's maturity and striking appearance, Dong Le's curvaceous figure, and Tian Yu's youthful beauty—their uniforms were undeniably alluring.

Everyone stood up, and Liu Jing nodded awkwardly and ashamedly.

Yu Xia rolled her eyes and coldly asked, "How is she?"

"The doctor said it's a ruptured spleen, and she's in surgery," Liu Jing answered honestly. Yu Xia ignored him and coldly looked at the other four: "Are you the victim's family members?"

"Yes, we're brothers, and they're our wives," the four exchanged glances, and the eldest answered.

Yu Xia slowly turned her head and asked Liu Jing, "How is it? Did they give you any trouble?" Liu Jing didn't know what to say, so he could only say, "Well, they probably want to know the truth too."

Yu Xia understood and turned to the four again: "I understand your feelings. We've already conducted a preliminary investigation of the scene. Please rest assured, we will act according to the rules and handle this impartially. I hope you can remain calm."

The four looked at each other again, and the second eldest jumped out, pointing at Liu Jing and saying, "Let me ask you, do you two know each other?"

"That's right, we know each other, and we're quite close. So what?" Yu Xia raised her chin, her eyes full of disdain and challenge.

"What else? You should avoid me if you know me, do you think I don't understand?" The second son got excited, waving his arm. "Our family can't accept you handling this case, we demand a change of personnel."

"Right! Change personnel? What for? So what if you know someone? Is there no law?" "

Exactly, you hit someone and then come out to cover it up, what kind of police officer are you, bullying ordinary people?"

The two wives rushed up, starting a barrage of words.

"What's all the noise about? Shut up!" Yu Xiaqing shouted several times, her face stern. "What, you're not satisfied? I'm still going to handle this case. You're not satisfied? Go ahead and sue me wherever you want!"

Once upon a time, "Go ahead and sue me wherever you want" became the most frequently uttered and classic phrase by government officials, and also the phrase that made ordinary Chinese people feel most powerless and frustrated. But at this moment, Liu Jing found it particularly pleasing to the ear, experiencing for the first time the beauty and brilliance of this phrase.

The four of them were out of power at the time, which shows the power of this phrase. The eldest brother's face was very heavy. He sighed and said, "Forget it, everyone stop arguing. We should trust the police. Besides, things will be clear once Dad gets out."

The other three were very dissatisfied with their leader's attitude, glaring at him resentfully before sitting back down. Yu Xia softened her tone and turned to Liu Jing, "You sit down too. What are you standing there for?"

"Oh, you guys... sit down too." Liu Jing pointed to the chair next to him.

Dong Le looked around with a grin for a while, then pulled the bewildered Tian Yu to sit down. Yu Xia didn't sit down. With her hands in her pockets, she paced back and forth in the corridor, her eyes constantly scanning both sides. Everyone looked left and right, not understanding what she meant.

Finally, Yu Xia stopped in front of Liu Jing: "Now you know what the consequences of learning from Lei Feng are, right?"

Liu Jing didn't speak, only offering a wry smile.

"Look at you, a grown man like you, don't you know what society is like these days? You only learn how unpleasant it is when people repay kindness with enmity. What's the point of the government having 110 and 120? Why don't you call either of those? Why do you have to act like a big shot? What does it matter to you whether other people live or die? What can't you accept? You think you're so great, so noble? Who do you think you are? After all these years of schooling, you're still so naive and childish. I'm ashamed of myself because of you!" Yu Xia pointed at his nose and gave him a good scolding.

The operating room was at the end of the corridor, and people kept peeking in from a distance. Liu Jing didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and endured it with a bitter face. Although he knew that Yu Xia's words were mostly meant for the four family members.

Yu Xia looked around, her voice slightly lowered: "Remember this, next time you encounter something like this, just report it to the police, then go about your business. Even if someone's head is snatched away by a dog, don't lift a finger, understand?"

"Understood." Liu Jing feigned obedience, saying devoutly, "Next time I won't even report it, I'll just walk away, pretend I didn't see anything. As long as it's not my father, I don't care whose father he is, he can lie on his street, I'll cross my road."

Yu Xia suppressed a laugh, glanced back, and sat down next to Liu Jing with her arms crossed.

The two of them, half-jokingly and half-seriously, indirectly criticized the four men, giving them a thorough dressing-down. The four men looked extremely ugly, especially the eldest, who was filled with shame and couldn't even lift his head; the second eldest also closed his eyes, looking very troubled; only the two wives couldn't hide the hatred in their eyes. For them, who hit their father-in-law wasn't important, the key was that someone had to pay the medical expenses, otherwise the two families would fight again.

The corridor returned to silence, with people occasionally moving about in the distance. Yu Xia, legs crossed, looked nonchalant yet slightly provocative, glancing sideways at Liu Jing or sweeping her gaze across the four people opposite her. Liu Jing felt conflicted, a mix of gratitude, shame, and frustration. Yu Xia had disregarded past grievances and so forcefully protected him; if he were to avoid her again, he wouldn't be able to live with himself. The four family members hung their heads, silent and cold-faced. Only Dong Le and Tian Yu kept whispering amongst themselves; it was obvious Dong Le had revealed the secret relationship between Yu Xia and Liu Jing.

Two hours later, the operating room door finally opened, and the gurney was wheeled out. Everyone rushed forward, the two sons anxiously asking, "Doctor, how did the surgery go? Is Dad alright?"

"It's alright, it's been stitched up. He'll be fine after a period of rest. Luckily, he was brought in in time; otherwise, at his age, without a spleen, his body wouldn't have been able to withstand it." The doctor looked tired but couldn't hide his excitement at the successful surgery.

The two brothers breathed a sigh of relief, both feeling gratified. The younger brother secretly glanced at Liu Jing. The old man was only partially anesthetized and still mentally alert. His eyes lit up when he saw Liu Jing, but then closed weakly again when he saw his two daughters-in-law beside him. The two daughters-in-law exchanged a fleeting glance.

The two brothers pushed the bed, followed by the others. At the ward door, the elder daughter-in-law suddenly blocked their way, saying to Yu Xia and the others, "You can't go in! You can only ask questions after we've confirmed my father is alright!"

The two brothers turned their heads slightly, then pushed the bed into the room expressionlessly.

Yu Xia raised an eyebrow: "Don't give me that! I know all your tricks perfectly well. It's not that I can't go in, but none of you can go in before I ask your questions!"

"Why should we? Just because we're police doesn't mean we're so great!" The second daughter-in-law rushed forward.

"What are you doing?" the doctor suddenly turned around. "The patient needs rest. Do you even want him to recover?"

The two daughters-in-law, seemingly emboldened, glared menacingly at Yu Xia. The doctor softened his tone and said, "Officer, I'm the patient's attending physician. He just had surgery and is still very weak. You can't disturb him for now."

"I don't care if you're the attending physician or not!" Yu Xia glared at him impatiently. "Mind your own business! Go do what you're supposed to do!"

Yu Xia's imposing manner and blunt words left no room for argument. The doctor had never seen a policeman like this before. He hesitated for a moment, then wisely stepped back.

The two daughters-in-law looked at each other, and the eldest daughter-in-law burst out, "The doctor said we can't go in! What are you doing?"

"Shut up!" Yu Xia shouted sharply. "If you keep making noise, I'll report you for obstructing official business!"

"What's wrong with official business? Does official business mean we can disregard human rights?" The second daughter-in-law rushed over, pushing and shoving him viciously.

"What...what are you doing?" Yu Xia was caught off guard and panicked, struggling and retreating. Dong Le and Tian Yu also rushed to help. The situation was getting out of control. Everyone's eyes were focused on the door, both inside the ward and outside the corridor, and many people gathered around.

The two brothers, after settling their father, quickly came out to dissuade them, and Liu Jing also went up to pull them back: "Yu Xia, forget it, at worst I'll..."

"Stop it, all of you!" Yu Xia steadied herself and shouted, blocking the doorway, "You've got some nerve! You dare to assault a police officer? Tian Yu, call 110 and take them all away!"

"Yes, Captain." Tian Yu hadn't been officially promoted yet, and his demeanor was proper and orderly.

Seeing Tian Yu take out his phone, ready to make a call, both wives quieted down. The eldest son hurriedly said, "Wait! Officer, we don't mean to bother you, but my father just had surgery. Isn't it a bit unreasonable for you to investigate now?"

"Unreasonable? You should ask your own wife that!" Yu Xia's face was stern, her words righteous and firm. "Let me tell you clearly, I suspect they are trying to coerce the victim and extort money from the parties involved. It's my duty to stop this. Before I start questioning you, no one is allowed to come in, no matter who you are!"

The four looked at each other, and the eldest son finally said, "Alright then, please hurry up."

"Coward! I've never seen a man like you!" The eldest wife was furious, viciously cursing her husband, and sat down dejectedly beside him.

The eldest son looked at his brothers with a grim expression, while the second son silently persuaded his wife.

Yu Xia ignored her and called out, "Tian Yu, you come in with me; Dong Le, you stay at the door. Before I come out, if anyone dares to barge in, call the police immediately."

"Understood." Dong Le nodded, glaring at Liu Jing with a mixture of resentment and anger.

Yu Xia then gave a threatening look to everyone before waving her hand and leading Tian Yu inside.

Seeing there was no more excitement, the others dispersed, and the corridor returned to its quiet state. The two sons sat expressionlessly, both looking somewhat ashamed; the two daughters-in-law glared resentfully, muttering something unintelligible; Dong Le stood at the door, coldly staring at Liu Jing with an unfriendly gaze; Liu Jing felt extremely uncomfortable under her gaze and simply met her gaze with a wicked smile.

A dozen minutes later, the door opened, and Tian Yu nodded slightly: "Everyone, come in."

The four entered listlessly, with Liu Jing following behind.

The group entered the room. Yu Xia sat on the edge of the bed, holding a folder, and pointed at Liu Jing, saying, "Grandpa, is that him?"

The old man nodded, tears welling in his eyes, his lips trembling as he said, "Benefactor, benefactor, benefactor!"

Overwhelmed with emotion, Liu Jing stepped forward and grasped the old man's hand, almost kneeling down in gratitude: "Grandpa, I'm not your benefactor, you are my benefactor!" Under Yu Xia's forceful pressure, the matter was perfectly resolved, and the five thousand yuan was successfully recovered. Liu Jing was deeply moved. A violent institution is a violent institution; iron-fisted policies always have unparalleled effectiveness.

After bidding a reluctant farewell to the old man and expressing their best wishes, Liu Jing left with Yu Xia and the other two. Before leaving, the two brothers sincerely expressed their gratitude and apologies. The second daughter-in-law's expression was indifferent, like an observer; only the eldest daughter-in-law remained resentful, because the five thousand yuan had been paid by her eldest son.

It was nearly evening when they left the hospital. The weather was still clear, and the setting sun made the world seem beautiful. Liu Jing wanted to treat the three of them to a meal, but Yu Xia, having already handed over her bag, simply said, "It's alright, you two go back."

He hurriedly said, "Yu Xia, what's the rush? It's getting late. Dong Le and Tian Yu have helped so much, why don't we have a meal together before you go?"

Yu Xia glared at him, "What meal! Haven't I kept you company enough?"

Liu Jing was a little embarrassed and chuckled awkwardly. The two girls exchanged a few playful words, got on their motorcycles, and sped away like the wind. As

the young policewomen disappeared into the sunset, Liu Jing turned his gaze to the people beside him, wanting to say something to express his gratitude. Suddenly, Yu Xia grabbed his collar and pulled him aside.

"Hey, Yuxia, why are you pulling my clothes?"

"Shut up!"

Chapter Thirty-Nine No Longer Hiding From You

Yuxia dragged him to a big tree, pressed him hard against the trunk, and glared at him, saying, "I'm asking you, weren't you hiding from me? Why did you call me? You're such a man, so capable, why didn't you handle it yourself?"

Liu Jing smiled bitterly, "I only know you in the traffic police team, and you're even a leader. Who else would I call if not you?"

"You don't look down on me now, where have you been all this time? Don't forget, you're a virgin, and I'm a widow. I'm not good enough for you at all, not even worthy of being friends!" After Yuxia finished speaking, she seemed to feel a little wronged, and gently bit her lip.

"Who looks down on you!" Liu Jing had a headache and pushed her arms away, "Didn't I tell you this before? What are you thinking?"

Yuxia leaned against him, looking up at him, "Then let me ask you, will you still hide from me from now on?"

"No, I won't." Liu Jing answered decisively. Perhaps what had just happened wasn't much, but Yu Xia's protection of him, the courage and strength she displayed, couldn't help but move him. If he continued to hide, it wouldn't just be a matter of contempt; he would despise himself.

Yu Xia looked at him, her long eyelashes suddenly fluttering, her eyes sparkling, and she lowered her head, resting it on his shoulder. Liu Jing, though helpless, couldn't bear it either, and gently supported her shoulders.

A gentle evening breeze stirred, the shadows of the trees swayed, and the branches rustled softly above their heads. Yu Xia closed her eyes, savoring the feeling of being nestled in the wind.

Yu Xia raised her head, her beautiful eyes clear and bright: "Liu Jing, honestly, I'm begging you, please don't hide from me anymore. I know our situation, I won't make things difficult for you, just let me have someone to rely on when the time is right."

Liu Jing frowned deeply, moved his lips, but ultimately didn't say anything.

Yu Xia continued, "I know what you want to say, but think about it, can those five months really be so easily replaced?"

Liu Jing sighed, "Please, I just graduated. Don't you think you're putting too much pressure on me?"

"So what? I'm a woman!" Yu Xia's expression was serious, her little grievances like a child's.

Liu Jing sighed inwardly. He wanted to say, "You are a woman, that's true, but I can't be considered your man," but he still couldn't bring himself to say it. As if understanding his thoughts, Yu Xia asked, "Do you think I'm selfish?"

"Not really," Liu Jing finally uttered. Yu

Xia smiled, mischievously, "I am a selfish woman, I know. For example, with Duo Duo, I know what I should do and can fulfill my responsibilities as a mother, but I won't lie to you. In my heart, she has never been stronger than my husband, or even you now."

"Is it really that bad?" Liu Jing felt dizzy.

"How could it not be!" Yu Xia pushed him away and walked towards the motorcycle. "Let me tell you, Liu Jing, you've done so many good deeds in your past lives to meet me, Qin Yu Xia. Don't take your blessings for granted!"

"I don't feel that way at all," Liu Jing followed behind, feeling very indignant.

"You don't feel it because you're stupid!" Yu Xia's beautiful eyes sparkled as she pouted. "Who do you think you are? I'm a mounted police captain, and plenty of people have designs on me. You're nothing compared to me. I'm the one who has to come and protect you, and I even have to grovel before you. I feel like I'm being pathetic."

Feeling slighted, Liu Jing felt awkward, but the truth was cruel, and he had to face it bravely.

"I misspoke!" Yu Xia suddenly turned around, her watery eyes smiling, her long hair swaying beautifully in the sunset. "Liu Jing, I misspoke. You are my man, the most precious person in this city."

"Can we not talk about this?" Liu Jing was calm and proud. This woman's charm could definitely defeat most men, yet he remained standing on Earth, standing before her.

"Serves you right!" Yu Xia glared at him, then twisted and hopped onto the motorcycle. "Who told you to rape me? You're just unlucky."

Liu Jing was speechless. Yu Xia lurched forward, tilting her head slightly. "Stop pretending, get on the motorcycle!"

"What! Are you kidding me? You want me to sit in this?" Liu Jing was both amused and exasperated. Police motorcycles are all single-seater, and although Yu Xia had tried her best to sit forward, her ample buttocks still took up most of the seat, leaving only a small portion.

"Just get on the motorcycle, stop talking nonsense!" Yu Xia put on a stern, flushed face.

Helpless, Liu Jing placed his hands on her waist, pressed himself against her plump buttocks, and carefully sat down. He was a little worried; riding a motorcycle would definitely involve twisting and turning, and with them so close together, if he accidentally got hard and pressed against her buttocks, it would be incredibly embarrassing!

Yu Xia turned around and winked suggestively, "Hey, I drive pretty fast, you'd better hold on tight!"

Liu Jing said irritably, "Do you need to remind me? With your car, I'd need a chance to hold on even if I didn't!"

"Good to know!" Yu Xia smiled smugly, her face beaming with happiness, and the motorcycle sped onto the highway.

Liu Jing was very practical; he not only held on, but held on very tightly, his chest pressed firmly against Yu Xia's back, even resting his head on her shoulder, the two whispering sweet nothings.

"Are you trying to strangle me? Holding on so tight?" Yu Xia was both annoyed and amused, "If you really want to hold me, I'll let you hold me as much as you want when we get back, why are you taking advantage of me on the street?"

"Do you think I want to? I have no choice!" Liu Jing was equally annoyed and amused, "The place is already small, and you're not wearing a helmet, your hair... it's making me uncomfortable!"

"Haha! You little man!" Yu Xia let go of the handlebars with her left hand and gave him a good nudge.

"Hey, be careful!" Liu Jing quickly reminded her.

Yu Xia smiled without saying a word, her heart filled with the same tenderness and affection as when they first fell in love.

"Yu Xia, where are you taking me?" Liu Jing asked, close to her ear.

"To pick up Duo Duo, and then find a place to eat."

"Oh." Liu Jing didn't say much more; Yu Xia's fragrance was intoxicating, and he took a couple of deep breaths.

Yu Xia seemed to remember something, rolled her eyes, and suddenly turned her head: "Liu Jing, don't you live quite close to me? Let's buy some food and eat at your place, and get acquainted with the area."

Liu Jing was taken aback: "What's the rush to get acquainted with the area? We can talk about it later. It's so convenient to eat out, why come to my place?"

"What's wrong with going to your place?" Yu Xia glanced at him with her beautiful eyes, her voice tinged with shyness and reproach, "I can get you drunk and let you rape me again!"

Liu Jing was speechless again, and could only say: "Okay then, let's go to the scene of the accident first, my electric scooter is over there."

"You have an electric scooter?"

Liu Jing said: "It's not mine, it belongs to someone else, I'm leaving it with me for now."

"Why didn't you say so earlier!"

Yu Xia suddenly turned, the motorcycle tilting forty-five degrees, turning to the right. The speed, the angle, Liu Jing was terrified, and he held her sexy waist tightly. The elasticity, the allure, Yu Xia's body, there was nothing to say.

The motorcycle sped through the wind, the roadside was filled with people getting off work, the two of them huddled close together.

They arrived at the scene. The roadside was deserted, with only the wind blowing. The electric scooter was gone! Damn it, good deeds never get rewarded—that saying is absolutely true! Liu Jing was furious!

"Hehe, forget it, it's just an electric scooter. I'll get you a stolen one another day." Yu Xia straddled the motorcycle, looking at him with obvious affection and tenderness.

Liu Jing shook his head and sat back down: "Yu Xia, can you get me two?"

"What do you need two for?" Yu Xia was about to start the scooter when she tilted her head in confusion.

"Hmm," Liu Jing said shamelessly, "I'll return one to the owner and give Little Tiger one as a gift."

Yu Xia gasped, her face hardening: "You wish! You've got none left!"

Before she finished speaking, the motorcycle roared off. Liu Jing leaned back, almost falling off completely. He quickly pressed closer, "Yuxia, honestly, since we're doing this anyway, why don't you get two? It's a piece of cake for you, just help me out?"

"You want me to help you? Sure!" Yuxia turned her head, smiling sweetly, "Let me use everything I need tonight, and I'll get you eight, not just two!"

Liu Jing rolled his eyes, "Then let's just get one."

Yuxia glanced at him, pouting pitifully, "Look at you! It's just two electric bikes! Leave it to me!"

Yuxia was half-joking, half-serious, but didn't hide her feelings. Liu Jing looked at her profile, his heart softening with emotion, "Yuxia, I'm sorry about what happened the other day. I said I wouldn't avoid you anymore, and I'll keep my word."

Yuxia's eyes stung, and she bit her lip, "What about Duoduo?" Liu Jing smiled, "Duoduo goes without saying, I'll definitely take her to the park. Well, you can rest well at home then."

"What did you say!" Yuxia snapped, "Liu Jing, how can you be so shameless?"

"What's there to be embarrassed about?" Liu Jing feigned seriousness. "I said I'd take Duo Duo to the park, not you! You're not jealous of Duo Duo too, are you?"

Yu Xia blushed, gritting her teeth, "The electric scooter is gone!"

Chapter 40 Eight Minutes and Fifty Seconds

The people's police are supposed to be sacred, even if they're not so sacred now. But wearing a uniform, riding a motorcycle, openly flirting in the street—that's anything but sacred. However, Yu Xia didn't care. Riding the motorcycle, experiencing herself in the speed, was her pursuit, especially with the man she liked behind her.

Her shy smile displayed her pride and beauty to passersby.

Holding Yu Xia's sexy body, speeding through the streets and alleys, Liu Jing's heart was pounding. Before, his feelings for Yu Xia were merely an instinctive responsibility, filled with helplessness. Now, he genuinely felt a liking for this young widow, six years his senior, and with a child.

Unlike the little tiger, liking the little tiger felt like a feeling of being filled, a heartfelt affection, the ambition of finally realizing a long-cherished ideal, a sense of accomplishment inherent in men, as if a true man has lived a life without regrets. But with Yu Xia, he saw an attraction, from her personality and mannerisms to her appearance and figure—he believed it was all attraction.

The motorcycle sped through the wind, the two embracing closely, the setting sun reflecting on their joyful faces, attracting the sidelong glances of passersby.

They arrived at Carrefour supermarket; Yu Xia went down to buy some food, and the motorcycle resumed its journey to pick up Duo Duo.

Outside the kindergarten, before the motorcycle had even come to a complete stop, Liu Jing jumped off. He secretly rejoiced that after being swayed by Yu Xia's sexy, large buttocks the whole way, he was thankful he hadn't gotten hard. "Yu Xia, you go in, I'll wait."

As he spoke, Liu Jing took off his coat and draped it beside him. His coat was stained with blood, and he was afraid it would frighten the child.

Liu Jing wore only a white shirt underneath, which looked radiant and handsome in the setting sun. Yu Xia looked at him, her eyes and heart filled with tender emotions, not for his youthful appearance, but for his thoughtfulness and gentleness.

"I'll be right out," Yu Xia smiled and nodded, getting out of the car and going inside, her long hair flowing with her movements.

The evening breeze was gentle, and Liu Jing watched her retreating figure, secretly admiring her beauty. Yu Xia was radiant, and Xiao Laohu was youthful and alluring; both were rare beauties, but by normal standards, Yu Xia was still a bit more beautiful, not to mention her figure. Unfortunately, people's opinions differ, especially regarding the people they like, at least that's how Liu Jing felt.

Thinking of Xiao Laohu, Liu Jing felt slightly downcast. He had wanted to strike while the iron was hot and continue the date tonight, but now it seemed that was off. He finally felt a pang of regret for his "good Samaritan" behavior.

Before long, the mother and daughter appeared at the door. Yu Xia put her daughter down and pointed at him, saying, "Duo Duo, look who's here!"

"Daddy!" Duo Duo's eyes lit up, and she called out softly, looking at him timidly before mustering her courage and running over. Liu Jing quickly stepped forward, picked up the child, and asked with a smile, "Duo Duo, have you been good these past few days? Have you been sick again?"

"No. Daddy, when are you going to take me to the park?" Duo Duo wasn't familiar with her new father yet, and her eyes were timid, but she couldn't hide her childlike hope.

Duo Duo was almost like a broken record, Liu Jing smiled, patted her little face, and said, "We'll go in a few days. Duo Duo, if you behave well at kindergarten, um, Daddy will take you several times!"

"I behave well every day, and the teacher praises me every day." Duo Duo opened her eyes wide and said very seriously.

"Okay, then we'll go in a few days." Liu Jing unconsciously looked at Yu Xia.

"What are you looking at? Let's go." Yu Xia glared at him and got on the motorcycle.

The three of them on one motorcycle looked quite comical. Duo Duo was placed on the gas tank in the front, while Liu Jing remained in the back, his arms wrapped around Yu Xia, practically embracing two women, even closer than before. Luckily, Yu Xia was a traffic cop; if it were an ordinary person, they would have been heavily fined, and their motorcycle and license would have been confiscated.

The motorcycle set off. Yu Xia lowered her head slightly, shy yet happy, enjoying the feeling of being embraced with her daughter. Children are naturally curious, and Duo Duo was excited, looking around and chattering incessantly with questions. She remembered this feeling of being with her parents.

A few minutes later, Liu Jing led Yu Xia and her daughter into his home.

"Please, make yourselves at home," Liu Jing said, putting down the groceries he was carrying and politely inviting them in. Yu Xia put the child down and looked around, asking, "Your house is so new, when did you buy it?"

"I bought it after I graduated and moved here; my mom bought it," Liu Jing replied, sitting down himself.

"Oh." Yu Xia was absent-minded, focusing only on the house, looking over both bedrooms, the kitchen, the bathroom, and even the balcony. Duo Duo, with her big, curious eyes, followed her mother around.

"The house is nice, and the decoration is quite unique. I like it." After Yu Xia finished looking around, she sat down on the sofa with Duo Duo in her arms. Liu Jing looked at her and nodded suspiciously, "It's alright."

Yu Xia smiled faintly and asked her daughter, "Duo Duo, is Daddy's house nice?"

"Yes."

"Do you want to stay at Daddy's house?"

"Yes!" Duo Duo said loudly, then looked at her mother and asked, "Mommy, what about you?"

"Yes, of course Mommy will stay with you." Yu Xia tilted her head, smiling even more beautifully than the child.

"Yu Xia, are you kidding me?" Liu Jing was shocked. Yu Xia inexplicably wanted to come to his house, looked at the house as soon as she walked in, and said she liked it. Although he found it strange, he never expected her to make such an outrageous suggestion.

Yu Xia placed the child beside her and said seriously, "I'm not joking. There's a large-scale relocation now, and I can't buy a suitable place anytime soon. Even if I did, I'd have to renovate, and the relocation office keeps urging us to move. Renting would require paying six months' rent upfront, which isn't worth it. I think your house is quite nice; I can borrow one of your rooms. I won't be staying there for more than a few days."

"Come on!" Liu Jing leaned to the side, indignantly saying, "You're a squad leader, and a female mounted police officer at that. Getting a house is no big deal for you? Who are you trying to fool?"

"So what if I'm a squad leader? I'm not the CEO of a real estate company." Yu Xia smoothed her hair and shifted her position, saying, "Liu Jing, don't be so tense. I don't want anything to do with you. Let's just treat it as a friendly favor."

"You make it sound so nice!" Liu Jing waved his hand, saying bluntly, "You just helped me out this afternoon, and now you're asking for your wages, and with this kind of demand. You're going too far!"

The mother and new father started arguing, and Duo Duo, a little scared, stared blankly.

Yu Xia picked up the remote control and turned on the TV, finding the children's channel. Duo Duo was engrossed in the cartoons and no longer paid attention to the two of them.

Yu Xia looked at him with a somewhat resentful expression and said, "Liu Jing, you're still my man, and Duo Duo calls you 'Dad.' What's wrong with me letting

you stay in my room for a few days?" Liu Jing had a headache and frowned, saying, "Yu Xia, everything else is fine, but this is really unacceptable. I won't lie to you, I'm basically settled with Xiao Laohu now. What kind of situation is this if you suddenly move in? If she finds out, she'll cause a huge uproar! You have to consider my feelings, right?"

Yu Xia smoothed her hair and said aggrievedly, "What's the uproar? You've been to university. How many university students with boyfriends or girlfriends still share apartments? My situation is clear. You just need to explain it to her! Besides, I won't be staying for more than a few days, maybe two months at most?"

"That won't work either!" Liu Jing said irritably, his face sour. "Our situations are different, and there's the issue of avoiding suspicion."

Yu Xia's mind raced, and her face instantly darkened. "Fine, forget I said anything." Liu Jing realized he had misspoke and softened his tone. "Yu Xia, don't take it personally, I didn't mean anything by it."

"If you weren't thinking that way, would you have said that?" Yu Xia said softly, with a hint of bitterness.

"What am I thinking? It's all your own imagination." Yu Xia's attitude always irritated Liu Jing. "I said avoiding suspicion is normal between men and women, what does it have to do with your status? Use your brain! I have a girlfriend. Putting you aside, any random woman coming to ask me for a room would look like cohabitation to outsiders. Would I agree to that? What difference would I make from that?!"

Yu Xia didn't speak, her eyes lowered, tears welling up.

Liu Jing took a breath and said again, "Yu Xia, I'm not trying to criticize you, but you care too much. Life is hard for everyone. Nobody cares whether you're a widow or not. Like you said yourself, you are a widow, and that's not your fault, but you can't connect everything to that. Aren't you just making things difficult for yourself?"

Yu Xia's eyes were red, her eyelashes fluttering violently. "You make it sound nice, but are you an observer? Are you like everyone else? How could I not care? Sooner or later you'll marry someone else, become someone else's husband, and have your own children. I lent you my house just so you could spend a few more days with me, so I could see you a few more times. Is that too much for me?"

Liu Jing fell silent, unsure what to say. From the unclear, drunken rape, to that night of passion, to this complicated relationship, he understood, but he couldn't quite see clearly, couldn't understand.

The two sat quietly, the air around them seeming to flow in a hazy, dreamlike way, many vague things swirling around them, only Duo Duo watching television with great interest. Children are so lucky; they don't need to understand anything, they only experience two emotions: happiness and unhappiness.

Yu Xia's mood calmed down slightly, and she sighed softly as she stood up: "That's all for now, I'm leaving."

"You've bought everything, why don't you eat before you go?" Liu Jing asked, looking at her.

"I'm not eating anymore, and I won't bother you anymore." Yu Xia pouted, like an unhappy child. Duo

Duo was engrossed in watching when his mother picked him up, his little face blank: "Mommy, aren't we staying at Daddy's house?"

"Daddy won't let us stay, let's go home." Yu Xia, holding the child, walked towards the door with her head down. Duo Duo clung to his mother's shoulder, looking at him expectantly: "Goodbye, Daddy!"

Liu Jing's mood was low and heavy, and he couldn't describe the feeling in his heart. He knew that Yu Xia was half-jokingly sulking with him, or rather, she was forcing him: either never see him again

, or let him move in. He finally knew what it felt like to be forced, and it was definitely much more painful than when he forced Little Tiger, because the feelings were different. Yu Xia reached the door and put shoes on the child with a long face; Liu Jing sat motionless with his eyes closed. The air in the room seemed to freeze, without a single human sound, only Duo Duo's frightened big eyes looking back and forth.

The sound of the door opening rang out. Liu Jing remained seated, as calm as a stone statue. Yu Xia didn't turn around either, taking the child's hand and walking out silently. Duo Duo, reluctant to leave, struggled to turn back slightly: "Daddy, don't forget to take me to the park?"

Yu Xia bit her lower lip, her posture slightly faltering. Liu Jing raised an eyebrow, his face ashen.

Yu Xia stood expressionless for three seconds, finally sighing, slamming the door shut, and carrying the child without looking back.

"Bang!" The heavy slamming of the door shook Liu Jing violently; his heart felt as if it had been struck by a sledgehammer, and he almost couldn't straighten up.

Liu Jing appeared calm, but deep inside, he was struggling with anguish. From the moment Yu Xia said she was leaving to her actual departure, less than two minutes had passed, yet he felt as if he had been tossed and turned in the fires of hell, his heart repeatedly tormented and cooked. Duo Duo's cry of "Daddy!" had almost pierced his heart with fiery tongs.

He wasn't a cruel person, never had been, and wasn't good at refusing; he was truly helpless. There were some things that couldn't be done—a principle he'd understood long ago. Yu Xia's request was too impolite, too absurd; he had no choice. He believed any upright and principled man in the world would refuse, just as he had.

Yu Xia was gone, a complete severance, not a bad outcome, yet Liu Jing felt no relief. He sat quietly alone, the air and time flowing around him, the room like a tomb.

After an unknown amount of time, Liu Jing sighed and went to the balcony. Perhaps he felt Yu Xia was already far away, or perhaps he wanted to look at the distant sky; he couldn't explain why, but she was gone. Many years later, he thought about it again, still without finding an answer, and unsure whether he should regret it.

"Daddy!" Yu Xia stood downstairs holding her child, Duo Duo waving her little hand and shouting.

He stood by the window, clearly watching the mother and daughter. Perhaps Yu Xia hadn't left at all, but had been waiting for him to appear.

Yu Xia smiled, her hair tucked behind her ear, her sensual lips curving, her beautiful eyes radiating a dazzling light. This was the most beautiful smile Liu Jing had ever seen, so he smiled too, though he couldn't explain it. Then he saw Yu Xia take out her phone, and the phone in his pocket rang.

Liu Jing took it out and held it to his ear; Yu Xia's voice came through: "Liu Jing, you're so cruel! Eight minutes and fifty seconds, that's too long! Counting is exhausting, I feel like I'm about to collapse."

He didn't speak, just looked at her, waiting for her to continue.

Yu Xia looked up at him, and said in a very soft but clear voice: "I believe I won't misjudge you, so I told myself to wait ten more minutes, the last ten minutes, for you to appear, to give myself a chance for the rest of my life."

Yu Xia's resolute expression was beautiful, her long hair flowing behind her head. Liu Jing smiled faintly, his hand on the balcony glass: "You're crazy, how can you decide decades of fate in ten minutes? I've never seen anyone as foolish as you."

"I'm willing." Yu Xia smiled at him, so happy, yet also shy and reproachful.

Liu Jing coughed to clear his head. "Yu Xia, actually... I came to the balcony to collect the clothes I washed yesterday, um, this." He grabbed a pair of socks.

Yu Xia chuckled, then her face hardened. "Don't give me that! Just open the door, I'm going home!"

Duo Duo clearly didn't understand the meaning of "going home," her big eyes looking around curiously.

Liu Jing held the socks, twirling them in his hands. "Um... you promised, just two months?"

"Yes, two months, I keep my word." Yu Xia giggled, her playful smugness delightful.

Liu Jing opened the door, then silently sat back down in the same spot Yu Xia had been sitting in before she left.

Would an upright, principled man do such a thing? He couldn't say, but he knew he couldn't refuse anymore, nor could he. Yu Xia's eight minutes and fifty seconds had touched the softest part of his heart—whether it was gratitude or happiness, it was something else entirely.

Soon, there was a clattering sound outside the door, then a loud bang as the door slammed shut even harder than when she left. Yu Xia came in, quickly kicked off her shoes, picked up Duo Duo, and turned back with a grin, looking rather aggressive.

"You should have just agreed earlier! Why did you have to pull this stunt? Duo Duo thinks her dad doesn't want her anymore! Isn't that right, Duo Duo?" Yu Xia shamelessly asked the child, feigning seriousness.

Duo Duo didn't speak, staring wide-eyed at her new father. Returning, the little one was just as excited.

Yu Xia, having gotten away with it, acted innocent, while Liu Jing remained silent, his face ashen. He'd been raped without any explanation, felt no remorse, and now she was being followed home. As the saying goes, "Attempted rape, ended up being raped," and he had no doubt he was the most pathetic rapist in human history.

"Alright, stop being upset. Take care of the child; I need to cook!" Yu Xia stood in front of him, handing Duo Duo to him.

Liu Jing glanced up, woodenly taking the child. Yu Xia bit her lip, looking at him coldly, her face showing lingering happiness and a hint of grievance hidden beneath.

"Aren't you going to cook? Why are you staring at me?" Liu Jing felt uncomfortable under her gaze and couldn't help but say.

Yu Xia bent down, bringing her face close to his: "Listen to me carefully, if you ever dare to treat us mother and daughter like this again, I'll haunt you for life, no matter who the tigers are, they'll all have to step aside!"

Liu Jing didn't speak, his expression unchanged. He thought of the little tiger's usual words to him: Who gave you the power? Who allowed you? Where did you get the guts? He finally understood the powerlessness of those words.

"Hmph!" Seeing that he didn't respond, Yu Xia seemed smug, picked up the groceries, rolled up her sleeves, and swaggered into the kitchen.
