Why do women refuse sex?

Refusing sex due to painful intercourse may be an underlying condition such as chronic genital pain. A 2010 US survey of sexual activity found that 30%
of women had recently experienced mild to moderate dyspareunia (painful intercourse). Besides insufficient foreplay and overly vigorous sexual activity, the main cause is chronic genital pain syndrome,
characterized by burning, stinging, or stabbing pain in the genital area. Experts recommend seeing a gynecologist as soon as possible to rule out skin conditions or inflammation. Treatment methods include
medication, pain relief, physical therapy, and biofeedback therapy.

2. Difficulty or inability to achieve orgasm may indicate diabetes. Pain and medication side effects can make it difficult to achieve orgasm. However,
a 2010 study by the University of Chicago involving 2,000 participants aged 57-85 found that another major cause of difficulty achieving orgasm is complications of diabetes. Diabetes can damage nerves and small blood
vessels. Experts say that in addition to actively screening for and preventing diabetes, people with diabetes should also tell their doctor about their sexual problems while controlling their blood sugar.

3. Even before menopause, vaginal dryness and difficulty achieving sexual arousal may indicate heart disease. Vaginal dryness in women under 45 may be
caused by heart health issues. The mechanism is consistent with the link between erectile dysfunction (ED) and heart disease in men. Additionally, long-term smokers may experience vaginal dryness. Experts recommend a thorough
physical examination to rule out heart disease as a cause and its symptoms, as well as other causes of vaginal dryness, such as early menopause (40-45 years old), perimenopause (starting at age 40), and medication
side effects. Vaginal lubricants can be used during intercourse to improve dryness symptoms.

4. A lack of interest in sex may indicate low testosterone levels. For both men and women, sex hormones are crucial to libido. Before menopause,
women experience a drop in testosterone levels of about half compared to their 20s, leading to a significant decrease in libido. Experts suggest that appropriate testosterone supplementation can improve female libido.

5. Extreme sexual apathy may indicate depression or a side effect of antidepressant medication. A sudden loss of interest in sex is a typical symptom of clinical depression. Antidepressants
can cause drowsiness, further diminishing sexual arousal and orgasm. Experts recommend discussing with your doctor whether you can switch to other medications to reduce
side effects.

6. Using vaginal odor as an excuse to avoid sex may indicate bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is often confused with yeast infections. The former
is not an inflammation, but rather an imbalance of vaginal flora, leading to abnormal pH levels and producing an odor, ranging from a mild ammonia smell to a severe fishy smell. Both conditions can occur simultaneously.
Experts recommend seeing a gynecologist promptly, describing the symptoms, and receiving appropriate treatment; avoid indiscriminate use of medication.

7. Urinary leakage during sex may indicate stress urinary incontinence. Leakage at any stage, including foreplay, intercourse, and orgasm, is abnormal. Stress urinary incontinence
is caused by weakness or injury to the pelvic floor muscles. Childbirth, old age, smoking, obesity, COPD, and asthma can all contribute to stress urinary incontinence. Experts recommend
avoiding water for several hours before sex; urinating before sex; and using rear-entry and side-lying positions to help reduce pressure on the woman's bladder and urethra. Additionally,
pelvic floor muscle exercises under the guidance of a urologist and appropriate medication may be helpful.
