Qinghai is a great place, especially in July and August. I went for a week last year. Since you're driving, it's best to bring a camping tent. It'll be more romantic and fun, and also more economical. A car trip should have at least four people. The route passes through Taiyuan, and you can also visit Ningxia via Yan'an. There's not much to do at Qinghai Lake. Once you get there, it's not that great. Since you're already at Qinghai Lake, you might as well continue on to Lhasa. It's only about 1,000 kilometers away from Lhasa anyway. What do you think?
