My stunningly beautiful female boss at 29 (52-56)

52.
After a few rounds of drinks, Uncle An took out a bank card and handed it to me, saying, "Son, there's some money in here, two hundred thousand yuan. It's a small token of our appreciation from your Uncle Yang and me..."
I quickly declined, "Dad, how can I take your and Uncle Yang's money? Absolutely not."
"Son, listen to me. We two old buddies didn't take good care of you in the past. Now that you and Meimei are getting married, we want to show our appreciation."
"Dad, don't say that..." I said.
Uncle An interrupted me, "Your Uncle Yang and I don't have high retirement pensions, but they're not low either. And our children all have good incomes. We don't lack money for our retirement. Just take this money."
Before I could refuse again, he added, "Your parents passed away early, and Meimei doesn't have a husband's family. Let your Uncle Yang and me be your husband's family and make a contribution for you. Don't make excuses."
"Dad!" Tears streamed down my face, and I buried my head.
An Xiaomin patted my shoulder. Uncle An said, "Xingyan! You are my child, so don't feel burdened..."
He then looked at Zhuang Youting, "When Tingting gets married in the future, I will also prepare a dowry for her."
I think Uncle An is truly a rare and wonderful person. He is so good to this child born to his ex-wife and the man she had an affair with before their divorce, and he even wants to give her a dowry. As a man, he is truly admirable.
This makes me understand even more why he is so good to the child of my dear friend.
“Uncle…” Zhuang Youting’s pretty face flushed slightly, “I’m only twenty-two this year, it’s too early for me to get married! Besides, I don’t even have a boyfriend yet!”
I smiled at her, “Tingting, you’re so beautiful and have such a great figure, how could you not have a boyfriend? There must be a lot of boys chasing after you!”
Zhuang Youting smiled shyly, “I don’t like those young boys! They’re all so immature and boring.”
An Xiaomin said, “Tingting, you must never like those older men, especially married ones, it’s not good for you or their families.”
“Oh! Sister…” Zhuang Youting said shyly, “I didn’t say I liked older men!”
After leaving Uncle An’s house, I drove the Mercedes-Benz GLC that An Xiaomin had given me, first taking Zhuang Youting back to her place, then taking An Xiaomin back to her villa.
When we arrived at the villa, I asked her if Yang Anyi was home. She said he was at boarding school.
“Go back now? Xingyan, be careful on the road,” An Xiaomin said.
“Okay, get some rest,” I said.
Just as An Xiaomin was about to get out of the car, she suddenly said, "Xingyan, what happened that night was an accident. Forget about it."
I knew she was referring to the one-night stand we had during last year's National Day holiday.
I nodded. "I will..."
Tears welled up in her eyes. "From now on, you will always only be my brother, my brother-in-law. Perhaps only in this way, only as siblings, as family, can we never betray each other, never hurt each other..."
As she spoke, tears streamed down her face. She said "Goodbye," and got out of the car.
I watched her figure disappear into the villa before driving away. All the way, I couldn't stop crying.
Back at my new home with An Xiaomei, I called An Xiaomei to report on my first day in Chongqing.
She laughed on the other end of the phone, "Aren't you a little dazed?"
I laughed, "More than a little? Houses, cars, money—one thing after another has blown me away, you know? My mind is still a bit foggy..."
She laughed again. I said, "Thank you all, Meimei, thank you sister, thank you Dad, thank you Dongzi, and thank you for giving me a home."
An Xiaomei said on the other end of the phone, "Don't say that, husband..."
Since we got our marriage certificate, she's started calling me husband.
"I love you, and my family loves you too. Besides, Minmin is not only my sister, but also your sister, and my dad is your dad, so they do all this for you willingly and are happy about it..."
"Ah! Ah! Ah!" An Xiaomei exclaimed a few times, laughing, "I wish this week would pass quickly, I wish I could be with you, I wish I could be your bride..."
Because she was busy with company matters, she wouldn't be able to return to Chongqing until the day before the wedding. In the next few days, she would be hosting a banquet for the entire company to celebrate her marriage.
"Silly girl, the week will pass quickly..." I laughed.
After finishing the call with An Xiaomei, I contacted Li Jiaqi to tell him that I was back in Chongqing today.
He told me he'd informed a group of his former buddies about my marriage. Some had worked with us under Boss Cui, some had done construction projects with us, and some even now worked for Li Jiaqi's company.
Boss Cui was the boss who brought me back to Chongqing from Shanghai. Years ago, during Chongqing's anti-gang campaign, he was imprisoned for involvement in organized crime and would be out for several more years. If I hadn't left him back then, I probably would have faced more than just those two years in jail.
Li Jiaqi said his brothers were very happy to hear I was getting married and wanted to attend the wedding, asking if I agreed. He added that these brothers had all gone straight and wouldn't cause me any trouble.
I said since they hadn't forgotten me, let them come! Li Jiaqi said, "Okay, then I'll forward your e-invitation to them."
He then asked when I was free these days so he could host a get-together. I said I was busy preparing for the wedding these days, and we should wait until the wedding day to have a proper celebration. Li Jiaqi said that was fine too, no rush.
On the last day of April, the day before the wedding, the bride, filled with joy, flew to Chongqing accompanied by my friend Lao Gui and his new girlfriend. An Xiaodong picked them all up at the airport.
According to custom, the bride and groom cannot meet before the wedding, so An Xiaodong took his sister directly to An Xiaomin's villa, and then took Lao Gui and his girlfriend to a hotel near my new home, where I had booked rooms for them.
An Xiaomei and I, on the other hand, had to endure another day of longing.
That night, the An sisters slept together, sharing countless heartfelt conversations. An Xiaomei nestled in her sister's arms and said, "Minmin, I love you so much!"
An Xiaomin laughed, "Why aren't you calling me 'sister' anymore?"
An Xiaomei said, "Minmin, do you know? I've admired you since I was little, hoping that when I grow up, I can be as beautiful and elegant as you."
An Xiaomin pinched her sister's cheek and laughed, "Silly girl, you're much prettier than your sister, okay?"
"Sister, do you know what Xingyan said about us sisters?"
Hearing her sister's words, An Xiaomin couldn't help but feel a pang in her heart. "What did he say?"
"He said, 'Don't be fooled by my decisive and efficient career woman persona; it's all an act for survival. And you? Although you're gentle and quiet, you're strong inside and out, radiating the aura of a powerful woman...'"
An Xiaomin couldn't help but sigh inwardly, "Do you think I want to be like this? I also want to be a little woman cherished and protected by the man I love!"
An Xiaomei's voice continued in my ears, "My employees call me 'queen' behind my back, but little do they know? In my heart, there has always been a queen, and that is you, sister!"
An Xiaomei looked up at her sister, "So, sister, I've always been proud of you, and I envy you so much because you are the most perfect woman."
An Xiaomin couldn't help but cry in her heart, silently saying to her sister, "Shouldn't I be the one envying you? Being able to be with the man you love. I really wish I were the bride getting married tomorrow!"

53.
On my wedding day, I got up early, ate breakfast, took a shower, did my hair in front of the mirror, and changed into my wedding dress.
This was my second marriage, but my first time having a wedding ceremony. When I married Sui Jinglei, we didn't have a wedding ceremony because I had no family, she was from out of town, and her relationship with her family wasn't very good.
Looking at myself in the mirror, I silently vowed, "From today onwards, say goodbye to the past completely and start your new life!"
Li Jiaqi called me, saying that the brothers were all waiting downstairs. He insisted on arranging a wedding car fleet for me, and unable to refuse his insistence, I had to cancel the wedding company's fleet.
As soon as I stepped out of the building, a group of men in black suits and sunglasses, led by Li Jiaqi, bowed to me in unison and shouted, "Congratulations, Brother Yu! Congratulations on your wedding!"
The scene was like a mafia boss's wedding. I recognized most of these men; they were brothers I used to work with. I greeted them all, and they were all very respectful, calling me "Brother Yu."
Whether in the underworld or running a company and doing construction, I've always been loyal to my brothers, so they remember my past kindness. Hearing of my wedding, they all came to support me at Li Jiaqi's invitation.
There were also some I didn't recognize, brothers Li Jiaqi had made over the years, who were also called to show their support.
I told Li Jiaqi, "Don't make it look like a gangster show. You'll scare the bride and her family, and it won't look good if the neighbors see us.
" Li Jiaqi immediately said to everyone, "Listen up, don't be too loud. Take off your sunglasses, don't scare your sister-in-law."
Everyone agreed and got into their cars. The main wedding car was a Bentley, which Li Jiaqi borrowed from a friend. All the other cars were Porsches, Mercedes, and BMWs; there wasn't even an Audi. The procession was quite impressive.
I got into the Bentley, and Li Jiaqi drove for me. When the convoy arrived at the entrance of the residential area, Lao Gui and his girlfriend were already waiting there. I let them get into the car behind.
The procession drove in a grand manner to An Xiaomin's villa, where wedding company people and cars were already waiting. Everyone welcomed the bride into the car.
After a while, the villa gate opened, and An Xiaomei, in a wedding dress, walked out accompanied by Wen Qishan and two other bridesmaids. Immediately, wedding company people standing on both sides set off confetti cannons.
With several loud bangs, confetti and ribbons rained down, landing on An Xiaomei's head and body. People also showered her with rose petals.
She was breathtakingly beautiful today, as if in a dream. I couldn't help but think how lucky a man must be to have such a stunningly beautiful bride!
Behind An Xiaomei, An Xiaomin, dressed in a beautiful gown, walked out of the villa arm-in-arm with her uncle, who was dressed in a suit. She was also so beautiful, breathtakingly so.
Seeing her, my feelings were still complicated. When our eyes met, I subtly looked away. Also
coming out of the villa were Zhuang Youting and Yang Anyi, an aunt and nephew of similar age, as well as her second uncle and aunt and their eldest daughter who had come from their hometown in Shanxi.
Zhuang Youting was also dressed beautifully today, elegant and charming. My second uncle and two others arrived in Chongqing yesterday, specifically to attend the wedding of my niece and cousin (actually my own daughter and younger sister). They were all staying at An Xiaomin's villa.
An Xiaomei's eldest sister is a year older than An Xiaomin. When An Xiaomei was two years old, she cried for days after being taken away by Uncle An. Of course, she had to come to congratulate her younger sister on her wedding day.
I walked over with the flowers in my arms and handed them to An Xiaomei. She smiled sweetly at me and accepted the flowers. An Xiaomin, standing beside me, said, "Today, I'm entrusting my sister to you. You must treat her well, or I'll never forgive you."
"I will..." I smiled at the woman I had always deeply loved, my heart filled with mixed emotions.
"Sister, don't say anymore..." An Xiaomei, not too shy, took my arm. "Honey, let's go!"
As we approached the convoy, my brothers bowed in unison and shouted, "Welcome, sister-in-law! Wishing you and your husband a long and happy marriage, and many children!"
This made An Xiaomei quite embarrassed. She pinched my arm and whispered with a coquettish laugh, "What are you doing? Why are you doing this?"
I leaned close to her ear and chuckled, "I told them not to do this, but they wouldn't listen!"
Someone opened the back door of the Bentley, and An Xiaomei, accompanied by Wen Qishan and another bridesmaid, got in. I also sat in the passenger seat. With everyone in the cars, the convoy drove off in a grand procession to the wedding venue.
Upon arrival, An Xiaodong was already waiting there. Today, he was not only the best man but also responsible for overseeing the wedding planning company's arrangements.
Uncle Yang and Aunt Jiang had also arrived. Although the marriage alliance between the Yang and An families had been dissolved, An Xiaomei was someone the two elders had watched grow up, like their own daughter, so they naturally attached great importance to her.
Yang Yifan didn't come; apparently, a friend of his was also getting married today, so he went there, but he asked Uncle Yang and Aunt Jiang to give his gift on his behalf.
Logically speaking, although Yang Yifan and An Xiaomin were divorced, he grew up with An Xiaomei and me, and was like an older brother to us. He shouldn't have been absent from the wedding of two people who were like younger brothers and sisters.
I guessed he might have intentionally avoided An Xiaomin, since they had only been divorced for a few months. Of course, it was also possible that a friend was genuinely getting married. In any case, we were brothers when we were young, and he was my foster brother for several years. I still hoped he would be well and get along well with me and the An family.
Amidst the explosion of fireworks, I stood by the right rear door of the Bentley, holding An Xiaomei's hand as we got out of the car. She covered her cleavage with her other hand. Because the wedding dress had a low neckline, and she was bending over, she had to cover herself up to avoid revealing too much skin.
After getting out of the car, An Xiaomei smiled, took my arm, and walked towards the restaurant entrance amidst the envious gazes of the onlookers.
Aunt Jiang opened her arms, beaming, "Oh my! Meimei, you look so beautiful!"
"Aunt Jiang..." An Xiaomei called softly, embracing this elder who had treated her like a daughter since childhood.
After separating, Aunt Jiang burst into tears of joy. Uncle Yang comforted her, "Old woman, today is a joyous day, why are you crying?"
Aunt Jiang wiped away her tears and said, "I'm just happy!"
Uncle Yang patted my shoulder hard, his voice also choked with emotion, "Xingyan, you're married, that's wonderful!"
"Thank you, Uncle Yang," I smiled.
Many people attended the wedding, mostly An family relatives, Uncle An's old colleagues and friends, An Xiaomei's university, middle school, and elementary school classmates, and some close friends of An Xiaomin and An Xiaodong. Some of them came from Wanzhou yesterday or early this morning.
Many people from my father's, Uncle An's, and Uncle Yang's factories used to come, but many of them no longer recognized me. This is understandable; over twenty years is enough to turn familiar faces into strangers, or even complete estrangement. I just don't know if I'm still the son of a thief in some of their eyes.
An Xiaomei and I, accompanied by An Xiaodong and Wen Qishan, stood at the entrance of the wedding hall, greeting guests with smiles, whether we knew them or not. Behind us, a huge wedding photo displayed the names of the groom, Chen Yu, and the bride, An Xiaomei.
Because I had changed my name to Chen Yu over twenty years ago, this name was used in both the wedding decorations and the invitations sent out.
Wen Qishan was a truly devoted bridesmaid, staying by An Xiaomei's side from beginning to end. For a daughter of a wealthy family to do this was truly remarkable, showing how much she loved An Xiaodong.
Amidst the festive atmosphere, I saw my ex-wife, Sui Jinglei, walking towards us with her son, who was also my son, Li Suitang.
"Chen Yu, congratulations." Sui Jinglei smiled slightly at me, then looked at An Xiaomei, "Congratulations to you both."
"Thank you!" An Xiaomei smiled, glancing at me, unsure who this beautiful young woman with the child was.
"Sweetie, say hello to Uncle." Sui Jinglei said to her son.
"Hello, Uncle." Li Suitang looked up at me, his voice soft and sweet.
He was my son, seven years old this year, brought by his mother to his biological father's wedding, yet I couldn't acknowledge him. I sighed inwardly, feeling a cruel twist of fate.
"And Auntie?" Sui Jinglei instructed her son.
Li Suitang immediately called out, "Hello, Auntie!" An Xiaomei patted his little face and smiled, "What a cute little boy."
She took a few candies from a plate held by a bridesmaid and handed them to Li Suitang, "Sweetie, have some candy."
"Thank you, Auntie!" Li Suitang said, taking the candy.
I said to Sui Jinglei, "Jiaqi and the others are inside! Let's go in!"
"Okay." Sui Jinglei said, then nodded to An Xiaomei and led Li Suitang into the wedding hall.

54.
After the mother and son left, An Xiaomei quietly asked me, "Who is this?"
I said softly without showing any emotion, "My ex-wife."
"Ah?" An Xiaomei looked at me in surprise.
"The one who drove our wedding car just now is her husband."
An Xiaomei was even more surprised and asked in my ear, "Why did you invite them?"
She had already heard about me, Li Jiaqi, and Sui Jinglei from An Xiaomin, but the two sisters did not know that their son was actually my bloodline.
I looked ahead and said softly but clearly, "Forgiving others is also being lenient with yourself. Some things are better left unsaid than weighed down on you."
"I understand, Xingyan-gege." An Xiaomei looked at me, her eyes glistening with tears.
The wedding went smoothly and was very lively. Uncle An and Uncle Yang, as the parents of the bride and groom respectively, gave speeches on stage. A congratulatory video from Chairman Wen and employees of the Guangzhou branch was played on the big screen.
In the video, Chairman Wen called An Xiaomei the "flower of Chaoyue Group," telling him to treat her well, otherwise he would be making an enemy of the entire Chaoyue Group. He also told An Xiaomei not only to be a good employee of Chaoyue, but also a good wife in life.
"Queen, congratulations on your marriage!" a group of girls and boys cheered in unison in the video.
"Although we are sometimes a little afraid of you, we all love you very much. Dear Queen, please stay young and beautiful forever, please stay proud and confident forever, please always be the one we both fear and love, and who often scold us behind our backs, but are overjoyed to receive your approval—Queen."
Watching these videos, An Xiaomei couldn't help but burst into tears. Throughout the wedding, she shed tears several times on the wedding stage, and Uncle An and Uncle Yang also shed tears several times. An Xiaomin also cried. I knew that half of her tears were for her sister's joy, and the other half, I suppose, were for herself.
In the afternoon, An Xiaomei and I saw off departing guests. She had changed out of her wedding dress and into a festive gown, still looking beautiful.
After seeing off a few guests, I went to the restroom. While I was in a stall, I heard two people come in and talk while urinating.
"So, after all this time, the groom is the old Chen family's son from back then."
Hearing this, I immediately perked up my ears.
"Which Chen family?"
"That guy? Chen Ping, the technician in Workshop Two back then, the thief who died when he fell while stealing scrap metal from the factory. You didn't know that?"
"Of course I know! Oh, so the groom is Chen Ping's son?"
"Isn't that right? If Old Liu hadn't told me, I wouldn't have recognized him! His name used to be Chen Xingyan, but he changed it to Chen Yu, combining the two characters."
"Tsk tsk, Old An is really loyal to his friends. Back then, he and Old Yang argued so much with their wives over adopting this child, and now he's marrying his beautiful daughter to him... Hey, wasn't it said that the Chen family boy suddenly disappeared more than twenty years ago? How come he's back?" "Who
knows? Anyway, he's back now, and he's Old An's son-in-law."
"Well... there used to be rumors in the factory that the Chen family boy was the son of An Weiguo and Chen Ping's wife, but now it seems like that was just a rumor. Who would marry their daughter to their son?"
"Yes! But then again, Xiaomei isn't Old An's biological daughter; she's his brother's child."
"Even so, they're still cousins, close relatives. Old An couldn't be that confused..."
As the two walked out of the bathroom, their voices grew softer. "Have you heard? Actually, Chen Ping didn't steal anything from the factory back then; he was framed..."
The last sentence startled me, but I couldn't hear anything more.
I quickly wiped myself, put on my pants, and left the bathroom. I looked around, hoping to find the two people from before, but I couldn't recognize them among the people around me.
There were many people from the factory attending the wedding today, and I didn't remember many of them. How could I find those two people just by their voices?
But one thing stirred my heart: maybe my dad really wasn't a thief. Didn't Uncle An say something like that when he was arguing with Aunt Zhuang? The more
I thought about it, the more excited I became. Then I heard a shout, "Chen Yu..." I
turned around and saw Sui Jinglei walking towards me, supporting Li Jiaqi with one hand and holding Li Suitang's hand with the other. Li Jiaqi seemed to have drunk quite a bit.
“We’re getting ready to go back,” Sui Jinglei said.
I asked, “What? You’re leaving already?”
Li Jiaqi muttered, “Leave? Why are we leaving? Today is my brother’s big day, we should at least have dinner before we go,
right?” “I’m sorry, Chen Yu…” Sui Jinglei apologized to me, “Jiaqi has been so busy with work lately, he’s been working so hard, I’m worried about his health.”
I remembered that Li Jiaqi looked unwell since I saw him this morning, so I said, “Then I won’t keep you any longer, take Jiaqi back and rest.”
"Brother, why are you kicking me out too?" Li Jiaqi protested.
"Jiaqi, it's not that I'm kicking you out, your health is important. We'll have plenty of opportunities to get together in the future. Listen to your wife today, go back and rest."
I said, then looked at Sui Jinglei, "I've felt that Jiaqi's complexion hasn't been very good all day. If he's really feeling unwell, it's best to go to the hospital to get checked out, just to put your mind at ease."
Sui Jinglei's eyes flickered for a moment, then she smiled and said, "It's nothing, I'm just tired. I'll be fine after a few days of rest." "Okay
, you guys go back! Did you drive?" I asked.
Sui Jinglei said she drove. I then asked Li Jiaqi what about the Bentley. He said he had asked one of his brothers to return it.
I hugged Li Suitang and said, "Tangtang, listen to your dad and mom!"
For a moment, I was overwhelmed with mixed feelings. No matter what, he was still my own son. Who could remain unmoved when facing their own child?
After seeing the family of three off, I wandered among the remaining guests, listening intently to their conversations, hoping to miraculously recognize the two people from before, but to no avail.
I saw Uncle An and Uncle Yang chatting and laughing with several elderly women, and I couldn't help but wonder to myself, "Dad, Uncle Yang, was my dad really wronged back then?"
Just then, An Xiaomei, who was chatting and laughing with some classmates nearby, stood up and gestured and mouthed to me, asking if I was looking for her. I shook her off and walked away.
After wandering around for a while, I heard An Xiaomin call me, "Xingyan..."
She was sitting in a room with two middle-aged women of similar age, and beckoned to me, saying, "Come here..."
I went in, and she pointed to one of the women and asked me, "Li Ping, do you remember her?"
The woman looked at me and smiled. I couldn't remember for a moment and scratched the back of my head.
The girl was a little embarrassed, nudged An Xiaomin, and laughed, "I told you I couldn't remember! Did you really have to ask?"
"The one in my class, the one I'm really close to..." An Xiaomin reminded me.
"Oh, Li Ping, right? I remember, I remember..." I pointed at Li Ping and laughed, suddenly remembering.
This Li Ping, along with An Xiaomin, Yang Yifan, and me, all went to the factory's affiliated middle school. She was in the same class as An Xiaomin, two years below Yang Yifan and me. Back then, Li Ping liked Yang Yifan and even asked An Xiaomin to deliver a love letter she wrote, but Yang Yifan ignored her at the time.
That's how people are; for some people and some things from the past, unless a specific environment is encountered, they may never remember them. Once inspired, they suddenly jump out from the depths of their dusty memories—not forgotten, but sealed away in some box of memory.
Li Ping smiled at me and said, "You finally remembered..."
She glanced at An Xiaomin and then said to me, "Your writing back then was really good. It was frequently published in the school magazine, and the school radio station even read your articles..."
I smiled but didn't say anything. Li Ping continued, "By the way, why didn't you get into university back then?"
I smiled again, "Actually, my grades weren't very good, so I didn't take the college entrance exam."
At that time, I was already hanging out with those people in society, so how could I have the mind to take the college entrance exam? The main reason was that I was afraid that if I got in, Uncle An and Uncle Yang would have to support me for another four years, and Aunt Zhuang and Aunt Jiang would be furious.
"That would be such a pity..." Li Ping said with a hint of regret.
An Xiaomin kept smiling at me. Li Ping tugged at her and said, "Back then, I always thought you would end up with Xingyan. I never imagined that you would marry Yang Yifan, and now the one married to Xingyan is your sister."
An Xiaomin's gaze towards me became complicated. She said to Li Ping, "I've always considered Xingyan my brother, not what you think."

55.
That evening, Uncle An, Uncle Yang, Aunt Jiang, An Xiaomin, An Xiaodong, Wen Qishan, Zhuang Youting, Yang Anyi, as well as my second uncle, second aunt, cousin, and Lao Gui and his girlfriend came to my and An Xiaomei's new house for a while.
My second uncle sighed to Uncle An, "Brother, it was the right decision to give Xiaomei to you. You raised her so well. She's beautiful and capable, a senior executive at a big company, and married a literary man who writes books. If she had stayed with me, who knows if she would be where she is today, or even if I could have raised her to adulthood!"
As my second uncle spoke, tears welled up in his eyes. Uncle An patted his younger brother's hand and said, "Meimei is where she is today mainly because of her own efforts. On such a joyous occasion, let's not talk about this."
Over there, Aunt Jiang held An Xiaomei's hand and said, "Meimei, everyone says 'Have a son soon, have a son soon,' hurry up, Auntie will take care of him after he's born."
"Aunt Jiang, why are you saying this?" An Xiaomei was a little embarrassed in front of so many people.
Aunt Jiang said, "You and Xingyan aren't young anymore, one is thirty and the other is forty-two, you need to hurry! Let me tell you, women should have children early! You're already thirty, a little late, but it's still okay, but if you don't hurry, you'll be in your thirties before you know it..."
Second Aunt also said, "Yes! Xiaomei, look at your brother, he's two years younger than you, and his child is already four years old. And your eldest sister, she's only in her early forties, and her son is already twenty and has a girlfriend."
An Xiaomin had to interrupt them, "Mom, Second Aunt, Meimei is so busy with work now, how can she have time to have children?"
Although she had divorced Yang Yifan, she still called Uncle Yang and Aunt Jiang "Mom and Dad." In her words, although she was no longer their daughter-in-law, she was willing to be their daughter for life. Her attitude gave Uncle Yang and Aunt Jiang some comfort.
“No matter how busy you are with work, you can’t ignore having children, right? What’s the point of working so hard? Isn’t it for a better life? I’m telling you young people! Don’t put the cart before the horse.”
Despite her limited education, Aunt Jiang spoke eloquently about profound principles.
“Aunt Jiang, Second Aunt, don’t worry, Xingyan and I will seriously consider this issue. In a year or two at most, we’ll start working on it…”
An Xiaomei said, holding my hand, her eyes filled with affection, “Right? Husband.”
I smiled and nodded. Aunt Jiang said, “That’s right, Meimei! Try not to have children after thirty-five, otherwise you’ll be considered an elderly mother.”
An Xiaomin watched us with a smile, but I sensed a hint of bitterness in her eyes.
While the two old men were smoking on the balcony, I went over and asked, “Dad, Uncle Yang, there’s something I want to ask you…”
I hesitated for a moment, but still spoke, “How exactly did my dad die?”
The two old men looked at me in surprise. Uncle Yang said, "Child, why...why did you suddenly think of asking this?"
I looked at Uncle Yang, then at Uncle An, and said, "I just want to know the truth about what happened back then."
Uncle An looked at me, tears welling up in his eyes, "Xingyan..."
Uncle Yang said, "That early morning, your father was found dead in the factory where scrap metal was stored, a steel bar piercing his head..."
"Then why did the factory's security department conclude that my father was stealing and accidentally fell?" I asked again.
"Because they thought, what else could your father be doing there in the middle of the night besides stealing scrap metal from the factory?"
"So they concluded that my father was a thief?" I couldn't help but become agitated.
Uncle Yang asked anxiously, "Xingyan, what's wrong?"
I calmed myself down. "Nothing, it's just that a lot of people from the factory came today, which reminded me of the past."
Uncle An asked, "Did you hear what they were saying?"
I hesitated for a moment, then shook my head. "No."
Uncle An sighed and said, "Child, ever since that incident more than thirty years ago, your Uncle Yang and I have never believed that your father was a so-called thief. Knowing him as we two old brothers, he couldn't possibly have done such a thing. So, as long as you firmly believe that your father was innocent back then, you'll have a clear conscience."
Although I knew that matter wasn't that simple, if I pursued it further, it would seem as if I didn't believe these two elderly people who had been so kind to me.
They had been so good to me. One of them divorced his wife for me, and the other almost divorced his wife for me. Even his own son still resents me to this day. Not only that, back then, they got into countless fights because of people saying I was the son of a thief, and once they even ended up in the police station.
How could I possibly upset the two elders over a matter that has been buried for over thirty years?
"Fathers, shouldn't we be going? Tonight is Xingyan and Meimei's wedding night!" An Xiaomin said slowly as she came to the balcony.
"Right, right, right, how could I forget that? For a moment, I thought it was just our two families having a get-together again," Uncle Yang laughed.
Back in the living room, An Xiaomin said to her younger sister, "On the third day of the wedding, the bride returns to her parents' home. How about it? Are you two going back the day after tomorrow? We can have a get-together at my house."
An Xiaomei nodded and smiled, "Yes, of course we have to go! It just so happens that Second Uncle, Second Aunt, and Eldest Sister are all here."
An Xiaomin said, "Okay then..."
She looked at An Xiaodong, pointed at her younger brother, and said, "You have to be there when your sister returns home. I don't care if you have a golf game, a drinking party, or a card game that day, cancel them all. You're not allowed to go anywhere, understand?"
An Xiaodong laughed, "Sister, if you say east, I won't go west."
Aunt Jiang laughed, "Speaking of Dongzi, he's been fearless since he was little, sometimes even his father's stick. Sigh! He only obeys Minmin's discipline."
An Xiaomin then said to Wen Qishan, "Shanshan, if you have time, you're welcome to come to my house as a guest."
“Great! I haven’t been to your house yet!” Wen Qishan laughed heartily, reaching out to take An Xiaodong’s arm, but immediately remembered the three elders were still present and that her relationship with An Xiaodong was not yet public, so she quickly stopped herself.
Next, An Xiaomin invited Uncle Yang, Aunt Jiang, and Zhuang Youting, and all three agreed.
“Brother Gui, thank you for taking care of my brother in Guangzhou, and I hope you two can come to my house as guests.” An Xiaomin also extended an invitation to Lao Gui and his girlfriend.
Lao Gui smiled and said, “Little sister, I really would like to come to your house, but I can’t! I have to spend these few days with my wife in Chongqing, she’s been wanting to come to Chongqing for a long time. How about next time? Next time I’ll go with Xingyan and Xiaomei to your house.”
“Okay, then please make yourselves at home.” An Xiaomin smiled slightly.
“Lao Gui, you two go sightseeing for the next few days, I’ll accompany you whenever I have time,” I said.
Old Gui laughed, "Alright, don't worry about us. You two have had a long day, you definitely need to rest tomorrow. And don't you have to accompany the bride back to her parents' home the day after tomorrow? We're leaving the day after that, let's get together again in Guangzhou!"
I said apologetically, "After all, it's rare for you two to come all this way, and I, as your host, can't spend time with you..."
Old Gui patted my arm and laughed, "Spend time with what? It's a special situation! Besides, my family did a detailed research trip beforehand, they probably know more about Chongqing's fun places and good food than you, a Chongqing native!"
I could only nod. An Xiaomin said to everyone, "That's settled then, we'll make dumplings the day after tomorrow. Everyone, leave now, let's give the young couple some time and space."
So everyone said their goodbyes. An Xiaomin then said to An Xiaodong, "Yiyi will take his grandfather's car to his grandparents' house. I'll take Dad, Second Uncle, Second Aunt, and Eldest Sister back to my house. We'll have enough for one car. You can take Tingting back to her place."
Zhuang Youting quickly waved her hand at her sister, saying, "No need, no need, Sister, don't trouble your brother. I can go back by myself."
An Xiaomin said softly, "It's so late now. How can I leave you alone as a girl?"
She then looked at An Xiaodong with an unquestionable gaze, "Your sister is in your care."
Although An Xiaodong was a little reluctant, he still agreed. By now, he wasn't as averse to Zhuang Youting as he had been before; after all, the girl was innocent.
"And Miss Wen, Dongzi, you have to make sure Miss Wen gets back to her place safely too," Uncle An said from the side.
Little did he know, An Xiaodong and Wen Qishan were already living together. In his eyes, Wen Qishan was just a colleague of An Xiaomei's with whom he had a particularly good relationship at the company, and now she was An Xiaodong's client.
“Uncle, just call me Shanshan,” Wen Qishan said with a smile to the old man.
“How can that be? Although you and our Meimei are good friends, you are still a leader in the company and the bread and butter of Dongzi Law Firm. We still need to show some manners,” Uncle An said seriously.
Wen Qishan smiled and looked at An Xiaodong, who shrugged at her helplessly.

56.
When leaving, An Xiaomin lagged behind and put her arm around An Xiaomei’s shoulder, saying, “Since you’re not planning to have children yet, you need to take precautions against pregnancy. Don’t always think about the safe period or anything like that. The safe period isn’t always safe. Also, try not to take birth control pills if you can avoid it. Be careful not to gain weight.”
“Sister!” An Xiaomei laughed, “I’m not a child anymore. You don’t need to be so detailed, do you?”
An Xiaomin looked at her sister affectionately, “Little girl, no matter how old you are, in my eyes, aren’t you still a child?”
An Xiaomei was separated from her biological parents at a young age. When Aunt Zhuang left, she was only seven years old. An Xiaomin was like a sister and a mother to her.
"Who's a little brat?" An Xiaomei retorted with a defiant laugh. "If you're really worried, why don't you stay and give them some pointers tonight?"
An Xiaomin's pretty face flushed red. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
The two sisters both laughed. An Xiaomei nudged her sister. "Alright! Hurry up and go! They're all in the elevator."
"I know! You think I'm delaying your wedding night, huh? Girls really are hard to keep at home now." An Xiaomin laughed, turning and walking towards the elevator. At that moment, tears involuntarily streamed down her face.
"Sister, if you don't come soon, we're going down first! Or you can stay here and be a third wheel for them?" An Xiaodong called out from inside the elevator.
An Xiaomin wiped away her tears, walking away while gritting her teeth and saying, "An Xiaodong, have you not been beaten for three days? Are you itching for a beating?"
As everyone left, the room fell silent. While An Xiaomei was taking a shower in the bathroom, I sat on the sofa smoking, my heart heavy with unsettled emotions, thinking again of my father's tragic death and my mother's death from depression.
During the Down to the Countryside Movement, my parents, Uncle An, and Uncle Yang were all sent to work in the same rural area. That's when my parents started to fall in love.
In 1977, when the national college entrance examination was reinstated, my father was admitted to a vocational college in Chongqing, leaving that poor, remote village. As soon as my father left, my mother became pregnant with me. She took a letter of introduction from the village and her household registration page, went to Chongqing to marry my father, and then returned to the countryside to give birth to me.
As the educated youth returned to the cities, my mother, Uncle An, and Uncle Yang went back to Wanzhou and became workers in a large state-owned enterprise. Because my father had been studying in Chongqing, Uncle An often helped take care of my mother, whether in the countryside or at the factory, and he did all the physical labor for her. This led to the later rumors that I was my mother and Uncle An's illegitimate child.
After graduating from junior college, my father was assigned to the same factory where Uncle An and Uncle Yang worked, becoming a technician in the workshop. From then on, our three families often gathered together.
In my childhood memories, my father was a very refined intellectual, wearing glasses, and very talented. He was often called upon by the factory to draw propaganda posters and write articles. He also played the harmonica and whistled beautifully, often playing for my mother and me. His favorite piece to play was Schubert's "Serenade," which I played for An Xiaomei by the Pearl River one evening last year.
I also remember that he loved reading; we had many Chinese and foreign classics at home, all of which he had found in bookstores.
I've always felt that my love for reading and writing was instilled in me by my father when I was young.
Yet, this person with such a rich inner world became a thief who died while stealing factory supplies. After my father's accident, I never believed he was that kind of person, but that's what the factory initially labeled him, and almost everyone thought so too. My mother and I couldn't clear his name. For
over thirty years, my father, now in heaven, has been unable to clear his name as a thief. Even now, when people mention him, they still call him that thief, and I've carried the stigma of being the son of a thief since childhood.
Thinking about all this, tears streamed down my face.
"Honey, what's wrong?" An Xiaomei, having finished her shower, came to my side and wrapped her arms around my neck.
I wiped my tears and said, "N-nothing..."
"Are you thinking about our deceased parents again?" She was wearing a sexy, revealing slip dress, her alluring breasts half-hidden before my eyes.
An Xiaomei wiped away my tears and said to the sky, "Dad, Mom, I am Meimei, the youngest daughter of your good friend An Weiguo. Now, I am Xingyan's wife, your daughter-in-law. Please entrust him to me with peace of mind. I will take good care of him for the rest of my life."
She looked at me again, her face already streaked with tears. "Xingyan, in the twenty or thirty years since Mom and Dad left, you have suffered so much injustice, so much hardship, so much pain. From today onwards, let me, An Xiaomei, love you and cherish you, so that you will never suffer even the slightest injustice again, and so that you will never be alone again..."
Looking at her, I also couldn't stop crying. She continued to gaze at me, still weeping, "If you still can't let go of my sister in your heart, if you still love her, then please treat me as her, treat me as a substitute for my sister, and love me, okay?"
I also gazed at An Xiaomei, feeling that although I had tasted all the bitterness of life in the first half of my life, how fortunate I was to have received the love of these two sisters.
“Meimei…” I wiped away my tears again and said, “I’m with you not because you’re a substitute for your sister, but because you are you, the woman I want to spend my life with, and that’s the only one, An Xiaomei.”
An Xiaomei’s tears rolled down again as she offered me her lips. We kissed passionately, and I picked her up and carried her to the bedroom…
The next morning, I woke up from a sweet dream, and An Xiaomei was still sleeping peacefully in my arms. She was holding me tightly, sleeping soundly, her face in her sleep incomparably beautiful.
At that moment, I couldn’t tell if I was awake or dreaming.
After wandering for over twenty years, I was now married to such a beautiful woman. In those days when I was scorned as a thief, in those years when I mingled in the underworld, in those darkest moments when I was imprisoned, in those times when I drove a ride-hailing car to make ends meet, it was something I never dared to dream of.
Everything felt like a dream. My experiences from childhood to the present left me unsure whether to curse God for his cruelty or thank Him for his blessings.
"Honey, you're awake?" An Xiaomei opened her eyes in my arms, her fragrant scent filling my nostrils.
"Mmm..." I smiled slightly and kissed her lips.
As we parted, I said, "Meimei, I want to thank you. Thank you for marrying me, thank you for giving me a home."
"Why are you saying that again?" An Xiaomei laughed. "Actually, I also want to thank you, because marrying you has been my dream since I was very young."
"What do you mean?" I asked with a smile.
She looked away, a little shyly saying, "When I was little, you often played with me. Even though I was only a few years old then, I thought to myself that when I grew up, I would definitely marry this man."
I was somewhat incredulous and laughed, "Really? You were so young back then, how could you have such a thought?"
"If you don't believe me, fine..." she pursed her lips and smiled.
I asked again, "Why me? And not your brother Yifan? He used to play with you all the time!"
"No way! He just followed my sister around back then. Whatever she asked him to do, he did. I know he only played with me to please her and to spend time with her."
An Xiaomei said, then suddenly laughed, "Hey, tell me, how come my sister has always had such charm? Not only you and brother Yifan revolve around her, but even her own brother Xiaodong has always been obedient to her?"
I laughed, "So, you're just a little queen at best, your sister is the real queen."
"That's so true!" she laughed, "Take myself for example! I'm usually arrogant in front of others, but when I see my sister, I'm completely devoted to her."
She paused for a moment, looking at me with a dreamy gaze, "Brother Xingyan, I love you, I really love you!"
"I love you too," I said, kissing her lips that were offered to me.
A passionate, intoxicating kiss, lingering and tender. Even though we'd only made love twice the night before, I was already as aroused as ever…
Back in Guangzhou, life went on. My novel, *On the Riverbank*, which I started writing over half a year ago, was finally finished, awaiting only the final draft before publication.
It's a semi-autobiographical novel depicting the changes in three families and several children over twenty years in Wanzhou, a small town on the Yangtze River.
The publisher's editor said the book was exceptionally well-written, a Chinese version of *Rich and Poor* (a famous novel by American author Irving Shaw from the 1970s, one of the reasons I wrote *On the Riverbank* was inspired by it), and that it would be a bestseller once it hit the market.
Those days, I felt incredibly fortunate. Not only was my writing career about to produce another significant work after *Sand Through My Fingers*, but I had also married a beautiful wife, and we were inseparable, living in perfect harmony. I was truly blessed.
Uncle An was overjoyed upon hearing the news. He said that once the book was released, he would buy a huge pile and give a copy to every relative, friend, and acquaintance. Even
amidst these times, what still lingers in my heart, besides the loss of my parents, is An Xiaomin. I feel, as she said, that I can only ever be her brother and brother-in-law.
Perhaps this is the best and only way for us to be together. To be with her in this way is a kind of happiness.
Just as life was heading in a better direction, a sudden event changed the trajectory of my life once again.
One day in mid-June, I received a call from Sui Jinglei. She told me that Li Jiaqi was dying and wanted to see me one last time.
