Different sex lives in different seasons

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-05-07
The seasons in nature change year after year, a cyclical pattern that has become a natural law. It is because of this law that all things can be born in spring, grow in summer, be harvested in autumn, and be stored in winter. As the *Neijing* (Inner Canon of Medicine) states, "Yin and Yang, and the four seasons, are the beginning and end of all things, the root of life and death. Going against them brings disaster, following them prevents illness; this is the way." Human sexual life, as a life activity and a phenomenon in nature, is no exception. So how can we adjust our sexual life according to the changing seasons? Traditional Chinese medicine speaks of the "Seven Emotions"—traditional Chinese medicine believes that humans experience emotional changes such as joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, and shock, also known as the "Seven Emotions." Among them, anger, joy, thought, worry, and fear are five of these emotions, which are closely related to the five internal organs. These emotions have been applied by physicians throughout history to health preservation, playing an invaluable and subtle role in regulating emotions, preventing and treating diseases, and prolonging life. (1) Spring is the first of the four seasons. All things revive, the weather is renewed, and it is full of vitality. In this season of "heaven and earth are born together and all things flourish", people's thoughts and physical activities should follow the natural changes and keep their mind and body in a state of smooth development. At this time, sexual life should be increased compared to winter, or at least it should not be excessively restricted. Moderately increasing sexual life helps the metabolism of various tissues and organs of the body and is beneficial to health. (2) When summer comes, flowers and trees are lush and life is vigorous. Yang energy is rising. At this time, people are in a good mood and their sexual desire is relatively stronger. Sexual life should be done according to their wishes so that the Yang energy in the body can be released outward without any hindrance, in accordance with nature. (3) In the golden autumn, the grass and trees wither and the cicadas are cold everywhere. People should also calm their minds, restrain their desires, and reduce sexual life so that the Yang energy in the body will not be released outward too much, so as to store the essence and prepare for the cold winter. (4) When the severe winter comes, ice and snow fall, Yang energy is hidden and all things are dormant. Sexual life should be restrained in this season. Indulging in excessive sexual activity will inevitably lead to the excessive loss of vital essence, weakening the body's resistance to disease and making it susceptible to various illnesses. Furthermore, it will cause one to miss a good start to the following spring. As the *Neijing* (Inner Canon of Medicine) states, "If one does not conserve essence in winter, one will inevitably fall ill with febrile diseases in spring," which encapsulates the principle of moderating sexual activity during the harsh winter. In this sense, harmonizing sexual activity in winter is key to harmonizing all four seasons and should not be taken lightly. Incidentally, in the relationship between health preservation, seasons, and sexual activity, improper seasonal adjustment not only harms the corresponding organ for that season—the liver in spring, the heart in summer, the lungs in autumn, and the kidneys in winter—but also affects other organs and brings various adverse effects to the body's health in the following season.
