Chapter Three: The Joyful Spring Outing - Lyrics and Drinking Game - Laughter and Curses Reveal Deeper Feelings. It is said that Huizhu and Luozhu, having been invited by Boqing to a lake trip during the Qingming Festival, rose early that morning, washed and dressed, and saw Boqing and the others enter. The two pearls greeted them with smiles, saying, "You're early!" Wang Lan replied, "We are early, but you are not late." Everyone sat down, and a maidservant brought tea.
Boqing noticed that Huizhu was wearing a three-layered lotus-colored pearl-embroidered leather jacket, over which she wore a light green woolen shirt, a pale red pleated silver-fur skirt, and narrow green silk shoes that subtly revealed her figure; her hair was styled in a modern hometown-style bun, adorned with a few sprigs of peach blossoms, and she wore a plain white cotton-embroidered hat; she appeared even more elegant, like a fairy on the water, otherworldly. When they saw Luozhu again, she was wearing a peach-colored woolen jacket with cloud patterns, a plain silk shirt underneath, a pine-green pleated gray squirrel skirt, and white silk high-heeled shoes. On her head was a light-colored hat with various patterns, and a row of red peach blossoms and a few fresh willow leaves were stuck in the doorway. Her skin looked like jade, as radiant as the morning glow.
After a while, breakfast was served, and Boqing and the other two ate some. Lian'er came in and said, "The boat has been chosen, a small awning, a little over an arrow's throw from here, moored at the dock." Wang Lan said, "Let's go first, it's only a short distance, no need to ride animals, let them go in sedan chairs." Bo Qing said, "Alright." Xiang Huizhu said, "We'll get off the boat first, you all pack up and come with us later." Wang Lan said, "No need to pack anything else, the most important thing for the ladies is to relieve themselves, it's very convenient for us." Luo Zhu spat and said, "You're so good at taking care of these fussy things, even if we don't drink tea for a day, we'll still be able to relieve ourselves, you're really not good at it." Everyone laughed, and Bo Qing and the others left first.
Er Zhu followed with four maids, got off their sedan chairs at the riverbank, and saw Bo Qing and the other two waiting at the bow of the boat. A sailor had already taken up a pole, slowly walked across the gangplank, and they all went into the cabin and sat down. The sailor started the boat and headed towards the West Water Gate. The group saw many pleasure boats coming and going on the river, all with their windows wide open, men and women sitting together, playing lively music. Lian'er lit a fire in a bamboo stove and brewed tea at the bow of the boat. After a short while, he served several bowls of tea, which everyone enjoyed. Looking further, they saw countless women of all ages leaning against the river towers on both banks: some with fans covering their faces, some gazing at people with half their faces showing, some resting their chins on their hands, staring silently, and some whispering amongst themselves. As they passed by, the women mostly looked down and giggled at them. There were also tourists on the shore, in groups of three or five, following their boat, murmuring and discussing something. Strangely, a boat heading towards the city suddenly turned its stern and followed them. Lian'er was heard cursing from the bow: "These bastards, all looking at me, probably wanting me as their son-in-law. I don't even know if your daughter is bald or not!" This made everyone laugh. Bo Qing, suppressing a laugh, stopped them, saying, "Don't say any more. We can go, and so can they. Who knows if we're going the same way? You're just being nosy." Suddenly, Luo Zhu said to Wang Lan, "Oh no, I feel a bit numb on my face, like it's swollen. Do you think so?" Wang Lan said, "What are you talking about? How can your face be swollen when you're perfectly fine?" Luo Zhu said, "It might be poison!" Bo Qing and Xiao Ru were greatly surprised, and even Hui Zhu was puzzled. They all said, "Strange, where is the poison?" Luo Zhu said, "It's eye poison!" Everyone thought about it and burst into laughter.
Before long, the boat left Xishui Pass. They saw dense shadows and mountains shrouded in mist. Many people stood on the earthen mounds flying kites, which looked quite beautiful, making them feel happy. He ordered Lian'er to put wine in the cabin, and everyone slowly sipped their drinks. But let's leave that aside for now.
Let's talk about one person, a crucial character in this book, who must be described in detail. This man, named Liu Yun, courtesy name Renxiang, lived on Sanshan Street in the city. His father, Liu Xianda, was currently the Minister of Personnel, assisting in the affairs of the Tiren Pavilion. He had previously served as a governor in eight provinces, accumulating a fortune of over a million taels of silver, making him the richest man in Nanjing. Liu Yun was twenty-six years old this year, and quite handsome. He passed the imperial examination in the same year as Chen Meishou, and thanks to his father's influence, he went to the capital for the metropolitan examination, was appointed to the Hanlin Academy, and was promoted to Supervising Censor of Shanxi Circuit in less than two years. Although he was good-looking, his inner talents were mediocre. He especially liked to flaunt his wealth and bully his neighbors. He married a woman surnamed Cao, the daughter of Cao Dasheng, the Vice Minister of Revenue. She was quite beautiful, but her temperament was exceptionally fierce, which Liu Yun greatly feared. He bought three concubines in the capital, but Miss Cao was unhappy and forbade Liu Yun from even getting close to them. He had no choice but to secretly seek pleasure with prostitutes outside the home. Two years ago, his grandmother passed away, and he returned with Liu Xianda to mourn her death. Now that his father had completed his mourning period and was going to the capital to take up his post, Liu Yun was unwilling to go with him and requested another year's leave. While his father had been at home, he hadn't dared to openly abuse his power, but now, as long as he could keep it a secret from his wife, he spent his time outside, besides frequenting brothels, intervening in government offices to plead for others and engaging in other lucrative business. Yet, he refused to spend money; although he was a wealthy young master, he was more shrewd than a poor man, earning him the nickname "The Dog-like Censor Liu." Today, because of Qingming Festival, he hired a boat and, along with a man from his household named Tian Wenhai, took some second-class prostitutes out of the city to cruise the lake. He sat by the window, looking around at the women; meanwhile, Bo Qing and the others had drunk some wine, and the boat sailed into Mochou Lake. It was already midday, and they moored briefly under the shade of willows. A group of sailors went ashore and sat under the roots of trees to eat. Xiao Ru said, "Our mute wine is tasteless. I've long heard that Rouyun's singing is the best in Nanjing. Why not ask her for a lesson? Besides, there are fewer tourists outside the city." Wang Lan clapped his hands and said, "Excellent! I'll play the flute and let her sing." He took a flute from the window and played along. Rouyun, however, couldn't resist the crowd, so she opened her throat and sang a set of "The Garden Stroll." Her singing was rhythmic and melodious, every word perfectly timed. It felt as if the flowing water and clouds had been stopped, and even the birds in the trees chirped and sang. After she finished singing, everyone praised her. Bo Qing poured a cup of wine and presented it to Luozhu, saying, "Rouyun, you've worked hard. Please drink this cup." Luozhu got up and returned the toast to Bo Qing. Just as she presented it to him, a fast boat came from upstream. Its three oars were rowing very fast. She couldn't turn around in time and bumped into the stern of the canopy. The boat rocked twice and then crashed with a loud "crash," breaking many of the utensils inside. Luo Zhu lost her footing and nearly tumbled into the water, only to be stopped by the cabin window. Terrified, she sat on the deck, speechless.
The crowd was shocked and gathered around, demanding to know what had happened. A group of sailors from the shore jumped onto the bow, hooked the boat with poles, and shouted, "You coffin! You've hit someone's boat in this wide river! You have to pay for the damage!" The sailors refused to admit their mistake, and the commotion continued. Luo Zhu, catching her breath, said, "My heart is still pounding. If the window hadn't blocked it, I would have at least had some water. This boat was really reckless." Wang Lan laughed, "You initially wanted a quick meal and wouldn't even drink tea. Now you want water, but it's not worth it." Luo Zhu glanced at her and said, "I was scared to death, and you're making fun of me. If heaven has eyes, I'll put you in the water later, and then I can laugh at you too." Wang Lan said, "I like to drink tea, I don't need water, unlike you who refuses to drink tea." This made everyone laugh. Just as they were about to confront the boat, a richly dressed young man came out of the cabin, followed by several servants. The man spoke with a strong Beijing accent, "Don't play around. What's the big deal about knocking things down? We'll compensate you. My sailors were careless, and your boat lying on its side in the river is also very irresponsible." He then shouted at the sailors on both sides not to curse. The sailors on the awning, seeing that the newcomer was very wealthy, dared not speak.
Chen Xiaoru, initially with his back turned, turned around upon hearing voices. The man clapped his hands and said, "Who do we have here? It's Brother Chen Nian! It's ridiculous that we're making such a fool of ourselves." Seeing it was Liu Yun, Xiaoru had no choice but to rise and greet him. Liu Yun seized the opportunity to step over the boat, enter the cabin, and bow to everyone. Bo Qing and Wang Lan returned the greeting and offered the newcomer a seat. Er Zhu, unable to avoid him, stepped forward and greeted him. Liu Yun smiled and nodded at them, then turned to exchange names with Zhu and Wang. Bo Qing, realizing it was Liu Yun, was reluctant to speak to him because he had heard people say he wasn't a good person. However, since he knew Xiaoru, he reluctantly exchanged a few pleasantries. Xiaoru was also uncomfortable; seeing that Liu Yun had already approached, and being a well-mannered person, he didn't want to openly shun him.
Why did Liu Yun also come to this road? Earlier in the city, he saw them sitting with two beautiful courtesans. Asking Tian Wenhai, he learned they were the Nie Twin Beauties. He had heard of them before and had been to their place twice, but the second mistress knew he wasn't one to spend money and had a bad temper, so she hadn't entertained him, politely sending him away. Today, seeing the two beauties, he was completely captivated, his mouth watering. Outside the city, he heard Luo Zhu singing, and was utterly mesmerized. Although he recognized Xiao Ru, he didn't dare approach rashly. Having made up his mind, he instructed his sailors to catch up with their boat and bump into them. A fight was inevitable, but he used the opportunity to defuse the situation and approach them. He told his family to fetch a large sum of money and told the sailors, "I think one string of coins is enough to cover the damage to your things. Go buy them yourselves." The sailors were delighted and thanked him for the reward. Xiao Ru secretly marveled, "Liu Yun is usually so stingy, why is he so generous today? And so peaceful, it's truly rare." Liu Yun said to Xiao Ru, "You two are having a great time today, bringing along some of the most prominent figures in Nanjing. I was unwittingly fortunate to have encountered such a good opportunity! If you don't mind, I'll keep you company for a chat; otherwise, I'll take my leave." He spoke, but didn't move. Xiao Ru didn't know how to answer him, and looked at Zhu and Wang. Bo Qing said, "We are already in a state of disarray, how can we possibly have Brother Qu Renxiang here? We should invite him another day." Liu Yun hurriedly replied, "No problem at all. Brother Chen Wu is a great friend. Although we are only meeting you two for the first time, we have long admired your great names, and it feels like we've known each other for ages. Please don't stand on ceremony. I will also take you gentlemen to Jimingdai and Yuhuatai for a day of leisurely sightseeing. It's a rare treat for us to gather together." After saying this, he laughed heartily and instructed his servants, "Go over to the boat and bring over some of the finest wine and dishes. Also, invite Master Tian to join us. Tell him that all the guests on this boat are my darlings, it's alright. Set up another table for the ladies and gentlemen, and send them back first. They can come to the mansion tomorrow to receive their gifts." The servants agreed and went off. Liu Yun addressed the group, saying, "I've brought a few men with me. Seeing the Erzhu sisters now, I consider them nothing more than dirt, so I won't have them come aboard to greet you all; it'll at least save face." Xiao Ru replied, "Brother Liu's appreciation is commendable, but you're being too modest." A moment later, his servants brought over several dishes, cleared the table of leftovers, rearranged the food, and served wine. Seeing him lingering, unwilling to leave, the group couldn't refuse him outright and had to offer him a seat. Liu Yun insisted on not leaving and sat opposite Xiao Ru. Suddenly, a man entered the cabin, about forty years old, with a weasel-like face, a sparse mustache, and dressed in bright new clothes. He feigned a refined manner and greeted the group. Liu Yun gestured for him to sit on his shoulder and addressed the crowd, saying, "This is my friend, Brother Tian Wenhai. He's a very interesting man." He then introduced everyone to him, and Tian Wenhai bowed, saying, "This room is filled with noble young men. Who am I, Wenhai, to be able to associate with such a person? It is a great honor for me." The crowd found his vulgar and offensive language particularly distasteful and snorted in response. Erzhu, though unwilling, couldn't afford to offend Liu Yun due to his arrogance, so they reluctantly rose and offered him a toast. Liu Yun was delighted, squinting his eyes and trying to engage them in conversation. Huizhu, who was usually quiet, and Luozhu, though quick-witted, were both annoyed by him and remained cold towards him.
Seeing the unpleasant atmosphere, Liu Yun wanted to come up with something to cheer everyone up. He said to Xiao Ru, "I have a new game, why don't we all play it? It'll be more lively than the 'Dumb Drinking' game." Xiao Ru said, "Alright, but may I ask what this new game is?" Liu Yun drank a full cup of wine and said, "It's a character-splitting game. Describe a character, add a small vertical stroke to make it '个' (gè), add a large vertical stroke to make it '个' again, remove the stroke and add two more vertical strokes to make it '个' again. It has to be connected and interesting, and it has to rhyme. Anyone who can't say it or makes a mistake will be penalized with three cups of wine and a joke. I'll start with mine." After thinking for a moment, he said to everyone, "I've presumptuously asked for more." He continued, "Write the character '二' (èr) in the middle, add a small vertical stroke and it becomes '土' (tǔ), add a large vertical stroke and it becomes '干' (gān). Just because it has two parts earth doesn't mean it's unrelated. So, add two more vertical strokes, and it becomes a frog in a well observing the sky."
Everyone could only say, "Good, this game is quite novel." Liu Yun, beaming with pride, poured a cup of wine and offered it to Bo Qing, saying, "It's Bo Qing's turn to speak." Bo Qing took the wine and said helplessly, "I also have the character 'two,' but it's derived from Brother Ren Xiang's previous game, so it's not without its flaws." He continued, "If you write the character 'two' in the middle and add a big vertical stroke, it becomes 'earth,' and add a small vertical stroke, it becomes 'work.' I think we don't need two parts 'earth,' nor two parts 'work,' so let's add two more vertical strokes to seal the opening.
" Liu Yun knew he was being referred to, but he could only join the others in saying, "Alright!" After Bo Qing, it was Hui Zhu's turn to speak. Hui Zhu said, "I can't speak, let's drink." She drank two cups in a row, and Bo Qing eagerly offered to drink one for her. Liu Yun said, "I have a joke to tell." Huizhu replied, "I'm not good at telling jokes, so let's just have three cups of wine instead." Liu Yun said, "Drinking games are as strict as military orders, so that won't do." Luozhu chimed in, "I'll tell it for you." Liu Yun laughed, "Alright, it doesn't count if people don't laugh." Luozhu ignored him and said, "In autumn, the osmanthus flowers are in full bloom. A group of scholars heard that there was an ancient temple with a large osmanthus tree and many flowers, attracting a constant stream of visitors from near and far. These scholars were delighted and went to admire it. Indeed, the tree was towering, and the fragrance of the flowers was intoxicating." One of the scholars picked a branch from a low spot to smell its fragrance, but the monk spoke up, saying, "Gentlemen, you are only allowed to look, not to touch. If you all pick branches, and I do too, thousands of people will be here every day, and all the trees in this small temple will have been broken off long ago." The scholars, angered, cursed the monk. Still not appeased, they saw a chamber pot nearby, picked it up, and poured it over the tree, saying bitterly, "You bald man, you only leave it for those high-ranking officials to smell, so they can swindle money from you. I'll ruin it for you, and instead of calling you Liu Renxiang (fragrant Liu), I'll call you stinky!" This caused everyone to burst into laughter. Liu Yun was quite displeased, but he suppressed his anger and said with a faint smile, "A humble name spoken by a beautiful woman, though stinky, is still fragrant; I'm afraid I'm not worthy of it." Then Chen Xiaoru spoke up, saying, "The character '曰' (yue) is written round; add a large vertical stroke and it becomes '由' (you); add a small vertical stroke and it becomes '田' (tian)." I think it's neither "by oneself" nor "Paradise Field," but rather adding two vertical strokes, letting people's opinions dictate right and wrong.
Everyone praised, "Good!" When it was Tian Wenhai's turn to speak, he said, "This junior is not learned enough to speak, but I'll drink three cups of wine and tell a joke." He drank two cups in one go, and offered the third cup to Liu Yun, pinching his nose, and said, "Please, sir, drink one for me. Others are kind enough to drink for you, but you won't? I bet you're embarrassed." He then gave a curtsy, making everyone laugh. Liu Yun laughed and said, "Don't be so mushy. I've brought you along, you silly gentleman; I don't want to be laughed at." He tilted his head back and drank the wine. Huizhu blushed when Tian Wenhai teased her, her face darkened, and she turned to look at the lake view through the window. Then Tian Wenhai told a joke: On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, lanterns are released. A group of country folk went to the city to enjoy the festivities. They saw lanterns everywhere, with brightly colored birds, beasts, and figures, all seemingly alive. The country folk, believing it to be true, exclaimed, "Where in the world can you find such living treasures? How strange! They even have shiny bellies that can be lit!" They asked, "How much are they worth?" Someone jokingly replied, "Ten strings of cash each." The country folk stuck out their tongues and said, "So expensive! So expensive!" Just as they were enjoying themselves, a sudden downpour caught everyone off guard, destroying all the lanterns and exposing their frames. The country folk said, "Pah! I thought it was alive, but it's just made of bamboo strips. Poor us country folk, we toil all year round, and even farming and raising chickens and ducks doesn't bring us this much profit."
Tian Wenhai, however, continued in one breath, "Real country chickens and ducks are no match for Tian's bamboo strips.
" Everyone burst into laughter. Luo Zhu laughed so hard she sprayed wine all over the table, tears streaming down her face. She swayed back and forth, like pear blossoms in the rain, willows in the wind, making her even more beautiful. Liu Yun said, "Don't laugh too hard." He then recited two more lines aloud: "There is a beautiful woman, graceful and charming." Luo Zhu, wiping the wine from her clothes, replied, "I didn't see Zidu, but I saw a madman." Xiao Ru laughed, "Rou Yun's mouth is sharper than a knife; we really have to give her a wide berth." Then, when the order was given to Wang Lan, he thought for a moment and said, "Writing the character 'three' is just right. Adding a large vertical stroke makes it 'master,' adding a small vertical stroke makes it 'king.' I think you're neither a master of three parts nor a king of three parts. Why not add two vertical strokes? People say you won't last long.
" Everyone laughed, but then the order was given to Luo Zhu, who said, "What I said isn't very good, please forgive me." Just as she was about to speak, she laughed again, barely managing to suppress her laughter, and said, "Do you know that writing the character 'king' makes it 'five,' adding a small vertical stroke makes it 'five,' adding a large vertical stroke makes it 'ugly'? I think you're neither like Wang Laowu nor Wang Laochou. Why not add two vertical strokes? You'll look like Tian Laojiu."
Bo Qing said, "Excellent, yet so natural." Tian Wenhai said, "Why is Miss Luo openly insulting me?" Luo Zhu said, "This is truly strange. I was just making up the characters; you're not the only one in the world with the surname Tian, and you're not even the ninth son. Since I've made a mistake, how about I be punished by drinking a cup of wine and telling a joke?" Liu Yun said, "That's very useful; your joke isn't bad." Luo Zhu said: There was a man who was so poor he had no other choice. He thought to himself, "I'd rather go to the capital and become a eunuch; it's prestigious and I'll get paid well." Upon arriving in the capital, he became a servant under an old eunuch, asking for his help in all matters. The old eunuch assigned him to work in the inner palace. One day, an imperial edict was issued to prepare lunch. This man said, "His Majesty wants to eat lunch." The old eunuch shouted, "Don't talk nonsense! His Majesty wants to eat the imperial meal!" Another day, an imperial edict was issued to hold a grand banquet for all the officials. The man said again, "His Majesty is going to hold a banquet!" The old eunuch replied, "You're mistaken, His Majesty is going to hold an imperial banquet. From now on, you must remember this: for example, the inner garden of the palace is called the Imperial Garden, and the guards are called the Imperial Guards." The man then understood and said, "No wonder everything in front of the emperor is called 'Imperial.' From now on, I'm an old hand at this." That day, as he passed by the gate of the Imperial Garden, he stepped in excrement. "I wanted to curse you, but I was afraid it was the emperor who did it. If it weren't for the fact that you're an imperial censor, I would have cursed you."
Everyone burst into laughter. Huizhu looked at Luozhu and said, "You're too happy." Luozhu was only concerned with speaking freely and didn't care about others. Boqing and the others knew that he was being too sarcastic, but they didn't want to stop him. Besides, it was really funny, so they all hoped to cover up the matter with a laugh. Unexpectedly, Liu Yun was enraged upon hearing this, his face turning pale with anger. He wanted to cause trouble, but then he thought, "There are too many of them together; they won't allow me to make a scene. Besides, I have to consider Xiao Ru's feelings. Moreover, I came here on my own; they didn't invite me." Turning around, he saw Tian Wenhai with his eyes closed, shaking his head and saying, "Nonsense! That's going too far." He secretly tugged at Tian Wenhai's sleeve, stood up, and feigned a smile, saying, "Interesting, interesting! I should have stayed a little longer and enjoyed myself to the fullest. However, I have business to attend to in the city. I'll keep you company another day." His family went into the cabin to clear away the leftover food, and Liu Yun then took his leave of the others.
Seeing his uneasy expression, the others didn't want to keep him any longer, so they escorted him to the bow of the boat and dispersed. Back on the boat, Qi complained to Luozhu, "Liu Yunyuan is no good person. Since he shamelessly sat down, we should have just entertained him for half a day. He'll leave on his own when he gets bored. You insisted on being harsh with him. This kind of person holds grudges, and I'm afraid this will cause trouble." Xiaoru said, "I said we shouldn't go boating on the lake during Qingming Festival, but we ran into him anyway. It's really unpleasant." Luozhu sneered, "It's better to die than risk a fire. I offended him, but he's using his official position to try and deal with me. It won't affect anyone else, so you don't need to worry about me." Wang Lan chimed in, "Rouyun is right. If Liu Yunyuan tries to deal with you, I, Wangzhexiang, won't stand for it." Seeing the two of them say this, the others didn't say anything more and changed the subject. Boqing said, "We're hungry too." He ordered Lian'er to bring out the food and instructed the sailors to return to the city. After the meal, everyone chatted. The boat had returned to its original spot. They paid the fare, disembarked, and went their separate ways.
Back on his boat, Liu Yun angrily exclaimed, "I can't take it!" Tian Wenhai chuckled, "Young Master, why let such a trivial matter upset your noble spirit? Is dealing with a few prostitutes really that difficult? If it bothers them, that's not hard at all." He whispered a few words in Liu Yun's ear, saying that as long as he did this and that, "he would die without regret." Liu Yun, upon hearing this, turned his anger into joy, saying, "That makes sense, what you said is very true. Everyone in the city flatters me, but I'm being ridiculed by these two sluts. Isn't that going too far? I was fine at first, but their comments got increasingly absurd. If it's about saving face for them, that's even more ridiculous. I don't blame Xiao Ru, but Zhu Boqing and Wang Zhexiang acted so coldly, like they were worth seventeen or eighteen rank. Why would I fawn over them? Besides, I secretly think Huizhu is surnamed Zhu and Luozhu is surnamed Wang. Xiao Ru has no connection to them." As he spoke, the boat reached the shore. Liu Yun and Tian Wenhai returned to the mansion, saying nothing to Cao Shi. They secretly summoned several capable servants and instructed them to carry out the task as before, emphasizing the importance of keeping the news secret.
Meanwhile, Bo Qing returned feeling uneasy, thinking, "Liu Yun was mocked and scolded by Luo Zhu today. He's not someone to be trifled with; he'll surely not let it go. I'm afraid something bad will happen to his family in the next few days. If something does happen, how can I protect him?" He also worried about Hui Zhu suffering. After much deliberation, he didn't bother to go out for several days. That day, Wang Lan, along with Xiao Ru, went to Qiao Buqing to visit Er Zhu. Bo Qing, also concerned about Hui Zhu, rode with them to the fence. They heard two or three people speaking in loud voices inside, but couldn't quite understand. Upon entering, they saw Er Niang beckoning. The others understood and followed her through a small door beside the main five rooms, leading to Luo Zhu's bedroom. What Er Niang said remains to be seen; let's find out in the next chapter.
