Chapter Twenty-Seven: Loyal Hearts Lead to the Execution of the Two Zhangs; A False Dream Leads to the Abolition of Power by the Five Princes; A Poem:
The Jade Palace is Vast and Tranquil, Golden Waves Flow Day and Night.
Alas, Where the Moon Is Wretched, It Alone Illuminates the Sorrows of Past and Present.
The Wind and Dew Cast a Lonely Shadow on the Wheel, Mountains and Rivers Breathe in the Autumn Breeze.
Who Plays the Iron Flute, Drunk and Leaning Against the South Tower?
The next day, the Empress Dowager, in the palace, enfeoffed Zhang Sansi as the King of Wei and the two Zhangs as the Marquis of Ye. Zhang Jianzhi and the others were very indignant, but Jing Hui said, "He is about to die, we cannot reason with him." So the court was adjourned and everyone dispersed. The Empress Dowager returned to the palace, thinking of Ao Cao's situation, feeling bitter and unable to obtain him, tears streaming down her face, regretting, "In a moment of desperation, I sent away a beloved treasure, and now where can I find it?" She thought of the Zhang brothers raising a tortoise that had reached its full moon, which must be useful, and ordered a eunuch to summon them that very night.
Liu Lang entered through the back gate. The Empress Dowager saw him and said, "Now that I have bestowed upon you the title of Marquis, are you satisfied?" Liu Lang laughed and said, "My ambition is fulfilled, but my heart's desire is not." The Empress Dowager said, "You took the miraculous medicine from the South Sea. Did it work?" Liu Lang said, "I bought the miraculous formula for a thousand gold pieces, and it was indeed miraculous." The Empress Dowager was overjoyed and said, "I am bored drinking alone. I invite you to drink with me." Liu Lang said, "I will drink a thousand cups to thank my confidant." The two drank for a long time, their thoughts becoming hazy. Before they knew it, the night was late, and they stopped drinking and went together into the gilded and exquisite tent. The Empress Dowager lay down, and Liu Lang secretly inserted the previous pleasure medicine under his fingernail. Then he inserted the new medicine into his penis, which was as large as his beloved's. The Empress Dowager suddenly felt itchy, and Liu Lang placed his penis at the entrance of her vagina and rubbed it slightly. The Empress Dowager held it in her hand and inserted it into her vagina, all the way to the core. Liu Lang lifted and thrust, and the sound of water was incessant. The Empress Dowager shook herself and stared intently, saying, "From now on, there is something wonderful beyond words. When I had intercourse with Ao Cao, his thing was large, but it didn't cause this burning itching in my vagina. Now your thing is just like Ao Cao's, and it causes this burning itching in my vagina. This thing is truly a treasure; I wonder if it can last?" Liu Lang replied, "It can last all night without tiring." The Empress Dowager said happily, "This time I ate fresh lychees from the South China Sea, and green plums tasted like chewing wax." Liu Lang said, "My brother's thing is also this large; if I were to intercourse with him later, I would feel like a green plum again." The Empress Dowager said, "No. You are more refined and handsome than your brother; naturally, your interest is different. Don't disappoint me." Liu Lang's drug took effect, and he became hot and hard. The Empress Dowager was so agitated by him that her limbs throbbed, and she cried out incoherently, before she unconsciously fainted. Liu Lang stopped, embracing her without moving, and after a while, she awoke. Liu Lang said, "May I be granted the title of Ruyi Jun?" The Empress Dowager replied, "If you can remain like this all night, I will abdicate the throne to you, and I will gladly accept it." Liu Lang said, "But I fear I am not worthy of such a title." After saying this, he resumed his actions. Although the Empress Dowager was advanced in years, her lustful desires grew ever stronger, and her beauty became ever more alluring. Liu Lang, captivated by her voluptuousness, indulged in her pleasures to the utmost, completely disregarding the proper etiquette between ruler and subject. Moreover, this time he was even more intense than when he was young, continuing until dawn. The Empress Dowager was reluctant to let him go and dismissed court that day. They only rose together at daybreak. From then on, Liu Lang received even greater favor, and Zhang Yizhi also frequently entered the palace to seek pleasure, staying up all night without tiring. The Empress Dowager then bestowed even greater favor upon the two Zhangs than upon Ao and Cao.
Upon learning of the extraordinary favor shown to the Zhang brothers, Zhang Jianzhi thought, "There's no time to lose." He discussed with Jinghui and the other four, saying, "Now that we're in power, we can't delay any longer. You must inform Emperor Zhongzong." Yuan Shuji said, "I'll go to the Eastern Palace and pretend to go hunting. We'll discuss this secretly with him when he's in the mountains." Jianzhi and the others said, "Let's do as planned." The next day, Emperor Zhongzong indeed went hunting in the western suburbs. Zhang Jianzhi and the other four rode with him, and halfway there, they dismounted and, in a secluded spot in the mountains, reported, "We have long desired to speak to Your Majesty in person, but due to the many eyes and ears around us, we dared not speak. Now, the situation is urgent, and we can no longer hide it. We deeply regret that Your Majesty is of advanced age and wisdom, and that the Empress Dowager, heeding the words of the Zhang brothers, is greedy for the throne and refuses to relinquish it. We have recently heard that the Zhang brothers are excessively favored, and the Empress Dowager intends to abdicate the throne." "And Liu Lang. If we lose him, where will Your Majesty be? We are in a desperate situation and have no choice but to ask Your Majesty for a solution." Emperor Zhongzong was greatly alarmed upon hearing this and asked, "What should we do now?" Jianzhi said, "We must kill the treacherous minister Zhang Wu before Your Majesty can be restored to the throne." Emperor Zhongzong asked, "How can we kill him?" Jianzhi said, "I have already made up my mind, so there is no need to worry. But I am afraid of alarming Your Majesty, so I apologize first." Emperor Zhongzong said, "The two Zhangs can be killed, but Wu cannot. He is a relative of mine, so I beg you to spare him." Jianzhi said, "If my troops go to the palace and do not find him, so be it. But if they do find him, I fear the swords will be merciless, and we will not be able to control ourselves." Emperor Zhongzong was greatly frightened and said, "If I am restored to the throne and the Zhou dynasty is overthrown, I will enfeoff you five as kings." Jianzhi and the others thanked him and then went down the mountain for a hasty hunt. Upon returning to the palace gate, they dispersed.
The next day, the five men reunited at Hanfang Courtyard. Zhang Jianzhi said, “I have recently heard that the two Zhangs have not returned day or night, and are indulging in debauchery in the palace. This afternoon, each of you will lead three hundred soldiers to guard the front and back palace gates. I will personally lead five hundred elite soldiers to Zhaoyang Palace, and kill them when the opportunity arises. Then, I will order the troops of the five cities to surround the residences of the two Zhangs, seize their families, and confiscate their property. Wu Sansi will be spared by Emperor Zhongzong and will make plans for the future. I believe that the flesh on the table is not a concern.” They all left according to the plan. He then sent someone to the residences of the two Zhangs under the pretense of searching, but the gatekeeper replied, “They have not returned from a meeting at court.”
At that time, Zhang Jianzhi, Huan Yanfan, Cui Xuanqing, Jing Hui, and Yuan Shuji were all dressed in military attire and led troops to guard the front and back. Zhang Jianzhi personally led five hundred elite soldiers, went straight into the palace gates, and no one dared to stop him, until he reached the Empress Dowager’s palace. All that could be heard was the laughter of the two Zhangs. Zhang Jianzhi, knife in hand, strode in. Upon seeing the two Zhangs, he shouted, "Stop your insolence! I am acting on behalf of Heaven to punish you! Take my blade!" Caught off guard, the two Zhangs were each killed by Zhang Jianzhi's blade. The Empress Dowager was greatly shocked and trembled. Jianzhi wrote down the nine crimes on a piece of paper and said, "Now I wish to kill you, but let's see what Emperor Zhongzong thinks. Look at these nine crimes, and you should quickly abdicate in favor of the Crown Prince." The Empress Dowager looked at the nine crimes with shock and said, "Indeed, you are not wicked. I shall abdicate in favor of the Crown Prince, and I will reside in the Shangyang Palace." Jianzhi immediately seized the imperial seal, took it, and went straight to the Eastern Palace, repeatedly requesting Emperor Zhongzong to be restored to the throne. Emperor Zhongzong immediately ascended the throne, and all the officials paid their respects. The dynasty name was restored to Tang, and Empress Wei was reinstated. Zhang Jianzhi, Cui Xuanqing, Jing Hui, Yuan Shuji, and Huan Yanfan were all granted the title of king.
Zhang Jianzhi and others expressed their gratitude and then petitioned, saying, "We wish to punish Wu Sansi and his family as severely as the two Zhangs. Your Majesty previously instructed us to spare them. However, if they remain on the throne, we cannot serve as your subordinates. We beg Your Majesty to strip them of their titles." Upon hearing this, Emperor Zhongzong had no choice but to strip Wu Sansi of his title and appoint him Minister of Works. Xue Jichang, the Prefect of Luozhou, said to the five princes, "Although the two villains have been executed, their wealth and privilege remain. If you don't remove the weeds at the root, they will eventually grow back." The five princes replied, "The matter is settled; they are but a few pieces of flesh. What can we do? We have already punished many; we cannot add to their crimes." Xue Jichang sighed, "I do not know where I will die."
Emperor Zhongzong changed the era name to Shenlong, honored Empress Wu with the title of Empress Zetian the Great Sage, enfeoffed Li Dan as Prince of Xiang, and granted a general amnesty, bringing joy to the people. Wu Sansi frequently instigated Empress Wei, and when Empress Zetian and Emperor Gaozong were in court, they would follow his advice and interfere in state affairs. The common people spread rumors, saying, "The two emperors, male and female, are ruling again." Sansi, fortunate to have escaped the net, wanted to have fun with Empress Wei, but fearing the inconvenience of coming and going, he falsely reported to the emperor, "I have heard that the five princes are regents and sometimes plot to harm me. If I leave the palace, I fear I will be killed. I beg Your Majesty to grant me a room in the palace guard quarters so I can stay temporarily and avoid any unforeseen dangers." Emperor Zhongzong said, "The palaces and pavilions in the rear garden are all empty; you may stay there." Sansi thanked the emperor and felt at ease staying there. Outside, he used gold, jewels, and jade to cultivate relationships with courtiers Zong Chuke, Niu Jinqing, Ji Chune, and Gan Yuandong, all of whom became his henchmen; people called them the Four Ghosts. He also deeply cultivated relationships with Zhou Liyong, Ran Zuyong, Li Quan, Song Zhixun, and Yao Shaozhi as his spies; people called them the Five Dogs.
Meanwhile, the Empress Dowager, startled by Zhang Jianzhi, fell ill again in Shangyang Palace. Recalling the past, she wept bitterly and repeatedly summoned Sansi, saying, "I am now ill and unlikely to recover. You must take good care of my parents in their remaining years and not forget the kindness they showed you in raising them." Sansi replied, "My grandparents are both elderly and healthy, enjoying both longevity and good fortune. Please do not worry about them. However, I fear that Zhang Jianzhi, that old murderer, may bring them unforeseen disaster. What should I do?" The Empress Dowager said, "I have heard that Lady Wei has been having an affair with you. Why not have her slander you before the Emperor day and night? If she can be killed, then we can eliminate this threat to our hearts." Sansi nodded and replied, "That makes perfect sense." He then left Shangyang Palace and went directly to Zhaoyang Palace. Emperor Zhongzong was viewing flowers in the Imperial Garden, but Empress Wei did not arrive and was sleeping in her bedchamber during the day. Sansi ordered Yun to wait for the Emperor at the palace gate: "If he comes, come and inform me immediately." Yun slipped away from the outer chamber. (The story continues...)
Unexpectedly, Sansi strolled over and found Empress Wei fast asleep. He gently lifted the bed curtains, reached under the covers, untied her trousers, and pulled them off. He then thrust his hard member into her vagina, gently pumping it in and out more than ten times. Empress Wei awoke, saw Sansi, and laughed, saying, "You disobeyed the Emperor's orders and ventured deep into the forbidden area. What is your crime?" Sansi replied, "This humble subject risked his life to enter Hongmen, solely to be loyal to Your Majesty." Empress Wei laughed loudly, letting him thrust in and out as he pleased. This left Empress Wei feeling as if she were in a dream, her mind reeling—it was all so amusing. Sansi said, "I only wish this love could last forever, but what can I do?" Empress Wei said, "But who will come?" Sansi said, "The Five Princes are regents; my safety is entirely in their hands. I fear the Emperor might believe them for a moment; what can I do?" Empress Wei said, "It's alright. Just enjoy yourself; I guarantee you'll be fine." Sansi said, "I can tell the Emperor this and that morning and night, and then I'll tell him everything." Empress Wei said, "I understand; there's no need to say more. At this moment, don't mention anything that might spoil the mood." Sansi exerted himself greatly, until Empress Wei was mesmerized, her eyes closed, and her legs went limp on the mat. Sansi stopped, and after a long while, her juices flowed freely. The Empress wiped herself clean with a handkerchief and asked Sansi, "Have you finished?" Sansi said, "Not yet." Empress Wei said, "You can stop now. When the Emperor comes to court, come at dawn, and I will finish with you." Sansi took his leave.
Emperor Zhongzong, having returned from viewing the flowers, entered the palace and said, "I was just viewing the flowers when I saw you sleeping soundly, so I left." Empress Wei replied, "Just now, in a dream, I saw Zhang Jianzhi and the other five princes enter my palace, push Your Majesty down, and then try to seize me. I awoke with a start, not knowing whether it was a good or bad omen." Emperor Zhongzong thought, "This dream is mostly ominous; I must summon Wu Sansi to examine it." Little did he know that this scheme was devised by Wu Sansi himself. At that time, a eunuch went to the rear garden to summon Wu Sansi to examine the dream. Emperor Zhongzong ordered him to sit down and recounted Empress Wei's dream from beginning to end, requesting a detailed analysis. After careful consideration, Zhongzong feigned ignorance and then said in detail, "If a ruler is overthrown, he cannot be reinstated. Could it be that the Five Princes harbor rebellious intentions?" Zhongzong replied, "It doesn't matter. I should first abolish their rule, and then devise a plan to kill them. Then this dream will become my own." Empress Wei said, "This must not be leaked; do it as soon as possible."
The next day, when Zhongzong held court, the Five Princes were again in a bad mood. Just then, someone submitted a memorial, saying that the Five Princes were abusing their power and would be detrimental to the state, and so on. After reading it, Zhongzong ordered the Five Princes to read it aloud in the palace. After reading the memorial, Zhang Jianzhi and the other four men reported, "We are all loyal subjects, and there is nothing that would be detrimental to the state. We now leave it all to Your Majesty's judgment." Emperor Zhongzong said, "I am very pleased with your loyalty and righteousness. However, due to the jealousy of the people, I will temporarily suspend your administration, but you will remain on the throne. I will find a way to deal with you later." Zhang Jianzhi and the other four men thanked the emperor and left, saying, "This must be a scheme by Wu Sansi to have someone submit this memorial. It is extremely hateful." Jianzhi said, "There is no need to say more." They returned to Hanfang Garden and discussed, "At that time, the Prefect of Luozhou..." Xue Jichang once told us, "If you remove the weeds but not the roots, they will eventually grow back." We didn't listen then, and now it has come to pass. What should we do?" Jinghui said, "I think the Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Personnel and Cui Shi are very much like us. We should hire him as our eyes and ears, have him pretend to be receptive to Sansi, and then lure him out, just like the story of the Two Zhangs. What do you think?" Jianzhi said, "Cui Shi is indeed like us. Quickly send someone to invite him to join us." He immediately sent someone to visit him, and Cui Shi arrived happily. They met and sat down as guests.
Jianzhi recounted the whole story. Cui Shi said, “Now Sansi uses five dogs as his eyes and ears, and Zong Chuke’s four sons as his wings. Who knows what he will do in the future? If we don’t get rid of him soon, he will cause future trouble. Now, let me pretend to befriend Zong Chuke as my confidant, then befriend Sansi, and lure him out. You gentlemen can then eliminate him from within, wouldn’t that be clean?” The five kings laughed loudly and said, “That’s right. I hope you will do it well; then the people will be fortunate, and the Tang dynasty will be fortunate.” Cui Shi then left.
What happened next? Let’s find out in the next chapter.
