The next day, the five men reunited at Hanfang Courtyard. Zhang Jianzhi said, “I have recently heard that the two Zhangs have not returned day or night, and are indulging in debauchery in the palace. This afternoon, each of you will lead three hundred soldiers to guard the front and back palace gates. I will personally lead five hundred elite soldiers to Zhaoyang Palace, and kill them when the opportunity arises. Then, I will order the troops of the five cities to surround the residences of the two Zhangs, seize their families, and confiscate their property. Wu Sansi will be spared by Emperor Zhongzong and will make plans for the future. I believe that the flesh on the table is not a concern.” They all left according to the plan. He then sent someone to the residences of the two Zhangs under the pretense of searching, but the gatekeeper replied, “They have not returned from a meeting at court.”
At that time, Zhang Jianzhi, Huan Yanfan, Cui Xuanqing, Jing Hui, and Yuan Shuji were all dressed in military attire and led troops to guard the front and back. Zhang Jianzhi personally led five hundred elite soldiers, went straight into the palace gates, and no one dared to stop him, until he reached the Empress Dowager’s palace. I am acting on behalf of Heaven to punish you! Take my blade!" Caught off guard, the two Zhangs were each killed by Zhang Jianzhi's blade. The Empress Dowager was greatly shocked and trembled. Jianzhi wrote down the nine crimes on a piece of paper and said, "Now I wish to kill you, but let's see what Emperor Zhongzong thinks. Look at these nine crimes, and you should quickly abdicate in favor of the Crown Prince." The Empress Dowager looked at the nine crimes with shock and said, "Indeed, you are not wicked. I shall abdicate in favor of the Crown Prince, and I will reside in the Shangyang Palace." Jianzhi immediately seized the imperial seal, took it, and went straight to the Eastern Palace, repeatedly requesting Emperor Zhongzong to be restored to the throne. Your Majesty previously instructed us to spare them. However, if they remain on the throne, we cannot serve as your subordinates. We beg Your Majesty to strip them of their titles." Upon hearing this, Emperor Zhongzong had no choice but to strip Wu Sansi of his title and appoint him Minister of Works. Xue Jichang, the Prefect of Luozhou, said to the five princes, "Although the two villains have been executed, their wealth and privilege remain. If you don't remove the weeds at the root, they will eventually grow back." The five princes replied, "The matter is settled; they are but a few pieces of flesh. What can we do? We have already punished many; we cannot add to their crimes." Xue Jichang sighed, "I do not know where I will die."
Emperor Zhongzong changed the era name to Shenlong, honored Empress Wu with the title of Empress Zetian the Great Sage, enfeoffed Li Dan as Prince of Xiang, and granted a general amnesty, bringing joy to the people. Wu Sansi frequently instigated Empress Wei, and when Empress Zetian and Emperor Gaozong were in court, they would follow his advice and interfere in state affairs. The common people spread rumors, saying, "The two emperors, male and female, are ruling again." Outside, he used gold, jewels, and jade to cultivate relationships with courtiers Zong Chuke, Niu Jinqing, Ji Chune, and Gan Yuandong, all of whom became his henchmen; people called them the Four Ghosts. He also deeply cultivated relationships with Zhou Liyong, Ran Zuyong, Li Quan, Song Zhixun, and Yao Shaozhi as his spies; people called them the Five Dogs.
Meanwhile, the Empress Dowager, startled by Zhang Jianzhi, fell ill again in Shangyang Palace. Recalling the past, she wept bitterly and repeatedly summoned Sansi, saying, "I am now ill and unlikely to recover. You must take good care of my parents in their remaining years and not forget the kindness they showed you in raising them." Sansi replied, "My grandparents are both elderly and healthy, enjoying both longevity and good fortune. Please do not worry about them. However, I fear that Zhang Jianzhi, that old murderer, may bring them unforeseen disaster. What should I do?" The Empress Dowager said, "I have heard that Lady Wei has been having an affair with you. Why not have her slander you before the Emperor day and night? If she can be killed, then we can eliminate this threat to our hearts." Sansi nodded and replied, "That makes perfect sense." He then left Shangyang Palace and went directly to Zhaoyang Palace. Emperor Zhongzong was viewing flowers in the Imperial Garden, but Empress Wei did not arrive and was sleeping in her bedchamber during the day. Unexpectedly, Sansi strolled over and found Empress Wei fast asleep. He gently lifted the bed curtains, reached under the covers, untied her trousers, and pulled them off. Empress Wei said, "I understand; there's no need to say more. At this moment, don't mention anything that might spoil the mood." Sansi exerted himself greatly, until Empress Wei was mesmerized, her eyes closed, and her legs went limp on the mat. Sansi stopped, and after a long while, her juices flowed freely. The Empress wiped herself clean with a handkerchief and asked Sansi, "Have you finished?" Sansi said, "Not yet." Empress Wei said, "You can stop now. Emperor Zhongzong, having returned from viewing the flowers, entered the palace and said, "I was just viewing the flowers when I saw you sleeping soundly, so I left." Empress Wei replied, "Just now, in a dream, I saw Zhang Jianzhi and the other five princes enter my palace, push Your Majesty down, and then try to seize me. I awoke with a start, not knowing whether it was a good or bad omen." Emperor Zhongzong thought, "This dream is mostly ominous; I must summon Wu Sansi to examine it." Little did he know that this scheme was devised by Wu Sansi himself. At that time, a eunuch went to the rear garden to summon Wu Sansi to examine the dream. Emperor Zhongzong ordered him to sit down and recounted Empress Wei's dream from beginning to end, requesting a detailed analysis. After reading it, Zhongzong ordered the Five Princes to read it aloud in the palace. After reading the memorial, Zhang Jianzhi and the other four men reported, "We are all loyal subjects, and there is nothing that would be detrimental to the state. We now leave it all to Your Majesty's judgment." Emperor Zhongzong said, "I am very pleased with your loyalty and righteousness. However, due to the jealousy of the people, I will temporarily suspend your administration, but you will remain on the throne. I will find a way to deal with you later." Zhang Jianzhi and the other four men thanked the emperor and left, saying, "This must be a scheme by Wu Sansi to have someone submit this memorial. It is extremely hateful." Jianzhi said, "There is no need to say more." They returned to Hanfang Garden and discussed, "At that time, the Prefect of Luozhou..." Xue Jichang once told us, "If you remove the weeds but not the roots, they will eventually grow back." We didn't listen then, and now it has come to pass. What should we do?" If we don’t get rid of him soon, he will cause future trouble. Now, let me pretend to befriend Zong Chuke as my confidant, then befriend Sansi, and lure him out. You gentlemen can then eliminate him from within, wouldn’t that be clean?” The five kings laughed loudly and said, “That’s right. I hope you will do it well; then the people will be fortunate, and the Tang dynasty will be fortunate.” Cui Shi then left.
