A memory from the SARS period

    page views:1  Publication date:2010-12-06
The SARS outbreak seven or eight years ago has gradually faded from people's memories, and no one deliberately tries to recall that period anymore. Those days were both terrifying and laughable.
When various rumors spread from big cities to our small county, like in many places, people here began panic-buying masks and Banlangen (a traditional Chinese medicine), and tried to minimize their visits to public places, even though no cases had been found here yet. When the world is blind, you become blind too. I was no exception, joining the panic buying, even stopping taking the bus and commuting by bicycle.
That day, when I couldn't buy Banlangen at the regular hospital, I went to that small pharmacy. I was greeted by a kind-faced woman. After confirming my purpose, the woman smiled and said, "Young people are afraid of death too!" "Of course," I replied, "life is getting better and better, and there's still so much we haven't enjoyed yet!" I don't remember much of what happened after that, but one sentence from her stuck with me: "A man who hasn't been with at least two women isn't living a worthwhile life, and a woman who hasn't been with at least two men has lived a wasted life." (Although I didn't particularly like her use of the word "play," I didn't see any frivolity in her expression at the time). Whether that statement was right or wrong is still hard to say, but it gave me a lot of inspiration and insights from that moment on. I'm still very grateful to that simple woman!
Life should be simpler, without forcing things or suppressing them; isn't being "natural" the best approach?
