I. Tutoring

One humid afternoon in July, the leaves of the plane trees lining the street drooped listlessly.

Because it was midday, there were few pedestrians on the street. Wang Feng walked out of the gate of the No. 1 Middle School,

glancing back at the school building behind him, his heart filled with emotion: from now on, this school would be his alma mater.

He had received his high school entrance exam results and had been admitted to the best high school in the city—the No. 1 Middle School—achieving

the highest score in his entire grade. His homeroom teacher was overjoyed at the thank-you banquet and got completely

drunk ; in the end, Wang Feng and a few classmates had to take him home. However, Wang Feng himself didn't feel there was anything

to be proud of. After all, his father had only offered a perfunctory congratulation over the phone; he was more concerned with his

business than his son.

Wang Feng carried the books he had cleared from his desk home.

"Home" was actually a rented room near the school. His real home was in a small town more than 100

kilometers . Since he went to study in the provincial capital for junior high school, only his elderly grandmother remained there. His mother

passed away from illness when he was ten years old, and his father was always doing business in the south, rarely returning

home . Fortunately, his father wasn't stingy, sending him several thousand yuan a month for living expenses, plus red envelopes during holidays. Through frugality, he managed to save a considerable amount of money, making him quite wealthy

compared to his peers . Although children from poor families mature early, this didn't hinder his independence. Young people often have a rebellious streak, and subconsciously, he wanted to prove one thing to his father: money can't buy family affection. Therefore, he was reluctant to use the money his father sent, spending it sparingly and even taking odd jobs during summer and winter vacations. This summer should have been the most relaxed, with no schoolwork, but he had already started planning his work. Back home, Wang Feng first packed up all the odds and ends in his room. The No. 1 High School is located in the East District, which is quite far from where he currently lives, so he needs to move to a place closer to the school. The East District is an old urban area, and the No. 1 High School is situated in a bustling area, so rents nearby are naturally high. Wang Feng searched online for a long time and found a one-bedroom apartment in a community called Green Pavilion for 800 yuan a month, almost half the price of his current apartment. However, that community is newly built, and the environment and security far better than his current place. Most importantly, it's only a 10-minute walk from the school. Wang Feng had already planned to find a part-time tutoring job that would offset the increased rent. The next day, Wang Feng was extremely busy, meeting with the real estate agent to view the apartment, signing the contract and paying the rent with the landlord, then returning to the original landlord to hand over the apartment and settle the accounts. He didn't move all his belongings to the new apartment until that evening. Before he could even unpack the various boxes and packages in his new home, Wang Feng found a few sheets of A4 paper and neatly wrote in pen: "Tutoring a student at the city's top-tier middle school—City No. 1 Middle School—seeking tutoring in elementary and middle school Chinese, Math, and English… Phone: 13xxxxxxxxxx." After writing three sheets, Wang Feng took the elevator down to his apartment building. There were several bulletin boards in the complex, perfect for posting his tutoring information. If he could find a part-time job in this complex, it would save him the trouble of running around everywhere. He posted ads as he walked, until he returned to the first bulletin board he had posted. There, he saw a mother with a little girl standing under the board, looking at his newly posted ad under the streetlights. "A student from the No. 1 High School seeking employment..." the mother murmured. "A high school student tutoring? Is that even possible?" Wang Feng stepped forward and said, "Auntie, hello, are you looking for a tutor?" The girl's mother turned around and looked at Wang Feng with suspicion. "Yes, you... you're a tutor?" "Yes," Wang Feng said sincerely. "I study at the No. 1 High School. And I also live in this neighborhood." "You live here too? That's very convenient," the girl's mother said. "But isn't it too early for a high school student to tutor?" Wang Feng said, "Auntie, don't worry, I've tutored before, I have experience. Or, you can try me out. I'll give you a free lesson, and if you think it's suitable, then you can hire me." "That's not necessary... How about sixth-grade math?" the girl's mother smiled. "No problem." "Then...that's fine too." The girl's mother said, "How about this, you come to my house at 7:30 tonight. We live in Building 2, Unit 160-9 ." Wang Feng happily said, "Thank you, Auntie, I'll definitely be there." After saying goodbye to the mother and daughter, Wang Feng walked home excitedly. He was very confident in himself. On the one hand, his science subjects were indeed excellent, and on the other hand, he did have tutoring experience. Starting from junior high school, he had tutored several elementary school students . He was quite confident in dealing with children's studies. When he got home, he checked the time. The hands pointed to 6:30 PM. He still had an hour. He first made a simple meal for dinner, and then found his 5th and 6th grade math books to review . Wang Feng had kept all kinds of textbooks from elementary to junior high school. Seeing that it was almost time, he took out his college admission notice and went out. Walking on the road, he suddenly remembered that the girl next to the mother must be the student he was tutoring. It was dark and he couldn't see very clearly. She had a ponytail. When he was talking to her mother, her big eyes blinked and seemed to be staring at him. Building 2 was right across from Wang Feng's apartment, separated by the central garden of the complex. He walked along the winding garden paths to reach the building. Taking the elevator to apartment number 9 on the 16th floor, he pressed the doorbell. The door opened, and a little girl stood smiling in the doorway. Her skin was fair, her eyelashes long, and her large eyes, like clear springs, darted across Wang Feng's face. "Hello, teacher!" the girl called out. Wang Feng blushed and quickly said, "Don't call me teacher, I'm a student too." The girl blinked her big eyes and asked, "Then what should I call you?" "My name is Wang Feng. You can just call me by my name." Before the girl could answer, her mother came over and greeted him, "Little Wang's here? Come in." "Hello, Auntie," Wang Feng replied, stepping inside.

This family's house was much larger than Wang Feng's cramped apartment; it was a duplex with a spacious living room, which Wang Feng

estimated to be at least 180 square meters, if not 200. The girl's mother invited Wang Feng into the living room, and they chatted for a while.

The girl's mother's name was Yang Fang, and her daughter's name was Li Wen'er, a very beautiful name. Wang Feng showed Yang Fang his college acceptance

letter and boasted a bit, finally securing the tutoring job he had hoped for—

twice a week, 1.5 hours each time. As for the tutoring fee, it was 50 yuan per session, just as Wang Feng had expected. With

the tutoring arrangement settled, Yang Fang arranged for Wang Feng to take Li Wen'er to the study to study.

Wang Feng asked Li Wen'er to bring him her math final exam from the previous semester. Sure enough, she hadn't done well, scoring only

61 points. So, based on the questions she got wrong, he first determined which knowledge point she hadn't mastered well. Then he gave her a few

similar questions, explained them, let her do them on her own, and finally reviewed them. Li Wen'er was a very bright

child; she always learned each knowledge point Wang Feng explained very quickly and

could apply what she learned to other situations. She could also answer the practice questions correctly. This made him a little puzzled. Why was she not good at math? It was as if she

hadn't attended math class.

Wang Feng couldn't help but ask her. Li Wen'er's smiling face

changed immediately upon hearing his question, and she lowered her head without speaking.

"Don't you like your math teacher?"

Wang Feng asked cautiously.

"Yes,"

Li Wen'er answered softly.

Seeing this, Wang Feng didn't press further. He took her back to the living room, arranged the next

lesson and left.

In the following days, Wang Feng tidied up the house while continuing to contact tutors, reviewing elementary school math, and

preparing practice questions. He was quite busy and content. Unfortunately, he couldn't contact any new tutors. Either there was no

response , or the tutors refused him outright because he was too young. After several days of fruitless searching, Wang

Feng gave up on the idea of tutoring and decided to use the extra time to preview the first-year high school curriculum.

The Xinhua Bookstore didn't have high school textbooks, so he had to ask older students. Wang Feng remembered that one of his

classmates ' older brothers was a second-year high school student and should still have first-year textbooks. He took out his phone, only to find it was

dead. After changing the battery and turning it on, he received over a dozen text messages. Checking the time, he realized

his phone had run out of battery a few days ago when he moved, and calls had automatically switched to text messages. Most of the messages were from classmates

, with one female classmate's number making up almost half.

Wang Feng tilted his head, thinking. He didn't usually interact with this female classmate; why would she call him? Scrolling

further , he saw a number for his former landlord.

Could there be a problem after moving out? Wang Feng quickly called back to inquire. It turned out the landlord

wanted the receipt for the last month's management fee. Luckily, he hadn't thrown them away, so he readily agreed.

They arranged to meet an hour later. Wang Feng found the receipt, went out, and took a bus to his old

apartment complex . As he entered the complex, he vaguely saw a girl's back turn around the corner of a building. Short

hair, a trendy super-short hairstyle, a light green dress, and high black boots. Judging from her attire, it seemed to be the

female classmate who had called him several times. Her name was Zhao Rui; her grades weren't good, but her family was well-off, and she usually dressed

fashionably.

What was she doing here? Wang Feng wondered. Seeing that he was almost at the landlord's house, he put the matter

aside , went upstairs, knocked on the landlord's door, and handed her the receipt. The landlord was an elderly woman. Seeing

Wang Feng, she kept praising him for being an obedient and good boy, for never being late with rent,

and for always keeping the room very tidy, making Wang Feng feel very embarrassed. After finally saying goodbye and leaving,

the landlady suddenly chased after him and said, "These past two days, one of your classmates has been coming to see you every day, but she won't say what she wants.

" "Oh? Okay, I understand. Thank you, Grandma,"

Wang Feng replied and went downstairs.
