After a while, Ah Jun came out and stood on the balcony smoking. Then his wife spoke, "Drink some honey water, it'll sober you up. You won't feel so bad." Ah Jun threw down his cigarette and went inside. I stood downstairs watching, my heart aching. My kind and lovely wife was now playing the role of a wife in A-Jun's home. A-Jun went to the balcony to smoke and make a phone call, speaking in his hometown dialect. A while later, his wife came out carrying a basin of clothes to hang out to dry—A-Jun's clothes and hers. She had taken a shower and changed into pajamas I hadn't seen before; they were obviously new. A little while later, she went inside and cut a plate of fruit, which she and A-Jun ate on the balcony.
