I'd met Mr. L a long time ago, but we weren't exactly friends. Since we often played tennis at the same place, we'd politely nod to each other when we met. But everything happened by chance.
One afternoon in September, I had arranged to play tennis with some friends—four of us in total—but one friend couldn't make it. We were short one player for doubles, and Mr. L was practicing his serve alone on the next court. I invited him to join us for a doubles match, and he readily agreed. We were all about the same skill level, and we had a great time. That's how we got to know each other, and we played together for several weeks afterward. My wife and I came twice. It was still quite hot in Guangzhou in September, and my wife's tennis shirt was soaked through in the front and back. Mr. L kept glancing at her with that fiery look…
I noticed, of course. The next time my wife didn't come to play, I tentatively chatted with him, and he surprisingly introduced me to a playground. I'd never heard of it before, but after browsing it when I got home, I understood his intention. So we talked about it directly. People who play tennis are generally straightforward and don't hold back. We agreed to each talk to our wives. About two weeks later, he said he'd almost finished his work, but my wife was still a bit hesitant, probably because she grew up in a family with a school environment. Mr. L suggested we meet up, and I was worried about awkwardness if we didn't get along, so I arranged for us to play tennis together.
We met at the tennis court. My wife had already met him and they were quite familiar with each other. Mrs. L doesn't play tennis much, so she seems to exercise very little. She's a bit overweight and a bit older than my wife and me. Mrs. L has a pretty outgoing personality. Since she doesn't play, she just fetched balls for us, peeled oranges, and did all the logistics. The atmosphere was quite good, mainly because everyone is a pretty easygoing person.
