Nine-edged memories (8) He is a legend

    page views:1  Publication date:2021-09-12
The next day, I woke up and saw it was already nine o'clock. I vaguely remembered that I had arranged to meet Uncle Jin at his house the night before, so I quickly got ready and called the two girls.
"Jiya? Where are you two? In the lobby? I'll be right down!"
There was a lounge on the first floor of the hotel, serving coffee and a few small pastries. I saw Jiaya and Gege Rile inside from afar. When I went over, I saw Lao Song there too.
"Uncle Song! I'm so sorry, I overslept and no one woke me up. I've kept you waiting!" I glared at the two girls.
"It's alright! I just got here a little while ago. Lao Jin knows you don't get up very early, so he told me to leave around eight o'clock. He even called to tell Jiaya and the others not to wake you. Shall we go? Let's grab something to eat first."

After breakfast, we all got into Lao Song's car. We drove out of the city, making many turns and taking more than an hour, until we arrived at the entrance of a small courtyard with water and trees. Lao Song stopped the car, said "We're here," and then honked the horn.
The two iron gates slowly opened. Before the car even drove in, I saw a sprightly old man with white hair and a youthful face standing at the end of the path inside.
Uncle Jin came out from the side, grabbed my hand, and pointed to the old man, "Lunzi, look who this is, do you recognize him?" The old man stood with his hands behind his back, squinting, a slight smile on his face, but he didn't speak.

An indescribable feeling churned in my chest, but at this moment I had to control my emotions; the rules couldn't be broken!
First, I straightened up and stood at attention, took a step forward and then half a step back, clasped my right fist with my left palm, turned forty-five degrees and bowed to the left, then returned to my upright position, bowed my head, and
said, "Zhang Lun, an outsider, greets the Master! The seven stars gathered last night, and the morning light shines in all directions! We travel by water without getting muddy! The banner faces east! The sign is bright!"
I knelt on one knee, lowered my head, looked at the ground at a 90-degree angle, and stretched my
palms forward. "I need a reward from the Master before I dare to show myself!"
The old man slowly walked over, placed his left hand on my right palm, and Uncle Jin had prepared three cups of water in advance, which a little girl presented with both hands on a plate.

"One cup washes away the dust of the journey," the old man said, pouring a cup of water onto my chest.
"Two cups drive away evil spirits," he said, slowly drawing an arc on the ground with another cup
. "Three cups purify the future!" the old man said, pouring the last cup in a straight line in front of me.
Uncle Jin took the cup away, and before the old man could speak, I picked him up, spun him around halfway, and put him down. He laughed loudly as soon as he landed,
"Little thing! You owe me three slaps!!!"
"Old man! You still owe me twenty slaps on the head!!!"

Jia and Gege Rile were stopped twenty meters away by Lao Song as soon as they got out of the car, but now they were free and carefully walked over to stand behind me. The old man peeked at the two girls from beside my shoulder, clicking his tongue. "Oh my, good girls! I wonder which rascal will end up with such pretty faces."
"This is my father's master—Master Hong. You should call him 'Grand Master.'"
"No need! Just call him Big Brother!"
Behind the master, Uncle Jin's forehead creased with black lines, a murderous aura stirring the breeze. I gritted my teeth and glared at the two girls.
"Grand Master!" Gege Rile, however, noticed
that Ji Ya had a quick wit and jumped over, grabbing the master's arm. "Hahahaha! Big Brother Hong!" ...

Jia and Gege Rile, one on each side, supported the beaming old man. Uncle Jin and I walked side by side behind him. I quietly tugged at him,
"What's up? Did you pick and choose Jia to stew tonight?"
"Sure, I'll go get the liquor!" With that, he turned and left.

Master Hong was the kind of master who should only exist in legends. Born in 1926, he became a monk at the age of six, mastering martial arts. At seventeen, he returned to secular life and made a living by collecting herbs in the Gaoligong Mountains of Yunnan with a herbalist. Just then, the Chinese Expeditionary Force entered Burma and recruited him into the army, assigning him to the 38th Division. In 1944, during the attack on Mengguan in Burma, their division led the charge, and Master Hong, due to his agility and quick wit, won numerous battles, earning countless merits and receiving many awards. Later, when they reached Myitkyina, during a period of rest, he was recommended by his superior and transferred to General Sun Liren's guard platoon as a personal bodyguard.
After the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan in 1945, Hong Shiye followed Sun Liren to Northeast China to "suppress bandits." During this time, he came into contact with the underground Communist Party in Northeast China. Before he could achieve anything, Sun Liren was transferred back
to Nanjing. This time, he didn't take Hong Shiye with him, but instead assigned him to be the bodyguard of his first wife, Gong Xitao. General Sun Liren already had a new lover at that time, and Gong Xitao was only a nominal wife. She didn't go to Taiwan with him before the liberation and stayed on the mainland. Hong Shiye, on the other hand, had a flirtatious relationship with the underground Communist Party members, so he didn't suffer after 1949. After a few months of ideological reform, he was sent to a factory in Hebei to work as a laborer.

Hong Shiye's laborer life lasted three months and eight days. During this short period, the factory manager's daughter became pregnant. She was hung from the rafters and beaten all night, refusing to reveal who her lover was. The next day, with the door tightly closed and people around, in broad daylight, the girl suddenly disappeared. When the factory manager went back to investigate, he found that only Hong Shiye had disappeared from the entire factory. Back then, the police force was weak. To arrest Master Hong, they mobilized police from two neighboring cities, but to no avail. During this time, Master Hong frequently appeared on the streets, sometimes buying groceries, sometimes chatting with former coworkers, and later even searching the streets for help making clothes and diapers for his child. The then-city police chief was furious. He tried everything except using his charm, but still couldn't catch him…

A whole year passed. One evening around dinner time, the factory manager's daughter suddenly came home carrying a child and knocked on the door, saying the child could see his grandfather and then leave. The factory manager summoned the entire factory security team and notified the police, surrounding his house completely. The daughter smiled and said, "Dad, if you want to catch him, it's simple. Just agree to our relationship, and he'll come out and turn himself in right now. Otherwise, this meeting is goodbye forever!"
The factory manager smashed four thermos flasks, kicked over a table, and roared to the sky, "It's either him or me! It's either me or him! I don't want this girl anymore!!"
Just then, a voice rang out from the crowd, "That's perfect! You don't want her? I will!" A figure leaped over the courtyard wall, removed his hat, and ripped off his beard—it was none other than Master Hong!

The crowd erupted in chaos, swords, spears, axes, hooks, and forks rained down. The police also cocked their guns. Master Hong strode onto the roof, struck a pose, and shouted, "You bastards! If you want to catch me, chase me east!!!" Then he fled eastward, the crowd roaring away. An old policeman stopped some people, quietly warning them not to fall for his trap! He ordered men to keep watch in the west, south, and north! Then, turning around, they saw the girl and child had vanished. Everyone was dumbfounded. Even the factory manager's wife was in a panic, saying that just seconds ago she was holding the girl's hand, and she didn't know how she disappeared; her hand was still warm!

What happened next was even stranger. The men Old GA had sent in four directions all returned after a few hours, each group claiming to have spotted Master Hong, and all saying they'd followed him for ages before losing him. The largest group went east, and they eventually scattered. Even after scattering, they each found their own target, and then... they all mysteriously disappeared. The places they disappeared to were all over the place: some said they jumped into a well and vanished, others said they climbed over a wall and disappeared, and one security guard even swore to heaven that he'd chased him to a dead end, and then Master Hong had disappeared through the wall. The factory manager slapped the guard, who rolled around on the ground swearing that his entire family's lives guaranteed the truth.

The old policeman, a product of the old society, had some experience and knew that Master Hong was no ordinary man. So he stood in the courtyard, looked up at the sky, and shouted, "My friend! Yin and Yang don't meet, and land and water are two separate entities! We can't fathom your skills! I'm done for! But in this world, righteousness reigns supreme, and morality comes first! Heaven has its way, and the country has its laws! You found a wife, and then you broke up a father and daughter's family—that's not fair, is it? Before your hands are stained with blood, let's talk things over! Tomorrow night, I'll take off my uniform and wait for you! Just the two of us!" (At dawn...) "Let's go our separate ways!" he shouted three times. A pebble wrapped in paper flew out of the darkness and rolled right in front of him. He opened it and saw only one word—"Okay."

Old GA went back to report, but the chief firmly disagreed with private negotiations, saying it was a good opportunity to make an arrest. They argued after only a few words, and the chief was furious. He locked Old GA in his office, had five or six people sit inside watching him, and sent more than a dozen armed men to stake out Old GA's house.

At that time, GA's family compound was right behind the office building. As soon as it got dark, several gunshots rang out from behind the building! Then the entire compound lost power and was plunged into darkness. Outside, there was a commotion and chaos! The people inside also grabbed their weapons and ran out. Old GA smiled disdainfully, knowing what was going on, and remained seated.
Sure enough, he heard someone in the darkness say in his ear, "Come with me." Old GA took off his police uniform and followed the dark figure out of the house. The two men went up the stairs to the top floor and then climbed onto the roof through the skylight. It happened to be the fifteenth of the lunar month, and a bright moon shone in the sky. The dark figure muttered, "A moon without wine is no fun. I'll go down and get some. Wait a moment!" He then turned and disappeared.
Twenty minutes later, the dark figure returned, carrying two bottles of baijiu (Chinese liquor), three jin (approximately 1.5 kg) of braised meat, and a bag of fried peanuts. The two men clapped their hands and laughed heartily, praising the man's good intentions. The dark figure removed his armor and spread it on the ground. The two men sat down and drank, chatting and laughing, while torches and alarms still blared throughout the compound.

Having eaten and drunk their fill, and with the matter settled, Old GA was responsible for persuading the factory manager's family. Master Hong promised to send the girl and child home the next day, and that he would not appear in public again or engage in any illegal or disorderly conduct until the matter was resolved. Once the factory manager's family gave him a reply, he would go to the police station to turn himself in and await punishment.
The two shook hands and said goodbye. Master Hong said, "It's not even dawn yet, and I'm not in the mood for drinking anymore. Consider it half a round of drinks you owe me!"
Old GA patted him on the shoulder, "We'll drink until we drop on your big day, brother!"

Old GA returned to his office and sat for another hour. The director and his team returned dejectedly. They then instructed the canteen cook to prepare a few dishes and a bottle of wine to warm everyone's stomachs. Just then,
the cook was heard jumping up and down in the yard, cursing, "Who the hell is this? Has he got a death wish? He dares to steal from the GA Bureau's canteen?"
