Springtime chaos among orioles

"Spring Chaos Among Orioles" [Ming Dynasty, by the Amorous Taoist]
is a very distinctive piece of writing. For example, the descriptions of intercourse are delicate, subtle, and playful, unlike many modern articles that lack depth.
The first chapter, "First Encounter in the Wisteria Garden,
" recounts: "
The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms flowed away like water, Emperor Taizu brought peace to the chaotic world;
in the remote corner of Western Shu, some people were troubled, all because they were already well-fed and clothed; they
indulged in lust out of thin air, but fate intervened;
the wisteria and the tortoise appeared as the time came, proud and magnificent, shamed all;
several times, their souls were transformed into mortal bones, and women of the world followed them;
if you want to know about the tortoise and the wisteria, enter a sweet dream and wander among immortals."
This story tells of a romantic affair in a rural village in Western Shu during the Yuanfeng era of the Song Dynasty, a tale that defies easy categorization.
After Wang Anshi vigorously promoted the New Policies in the second year of the Xining era, the court and the people were all benefited, truly a prosperous and peaceful era. As the saying goes, "When people are well-fed and clothed, they think of lust," how true this is!
In Longyin Mountain, Hanchang County, Baoning Prefecture, Western Shu, lived a prominent family surnamed Sun. Their ancestor was a junior general under Emperor Taizong, who later rose to the position of Vice Prefect of Sichuan and Shaanxi Circuit. However, due to his descendants' lack of education and hopeless prospects for officialdom, the family settled in Longyin Mountain, where they multiplied and became a prominent clan in the area. The Xuanfang branch of the family consisted of only sons for three generations, and all the male members died suddenly of a serious illness around the age of forty, leaving three generations of widows living together.
The grandmother, Tao, was seventy-eight years old and sat sullenly in her room, rarely speaking; her words were left unsaid.
The mother, He, was fifty-two years old and had lost her husband about ten years prior. She remained chaste, managed the household affairs, and was virtuous and capable, a model among the women of her generation in the Sun family.
The daughter-in-law, Gao, was thirty-seven years old and had recently lost her husband the previous year. She was always dressed in mourning clothes, her face etched with sorrow. Spring mountains are tightly locked, and boundless melancholy overflows between the golden waves of autumn water, truly like pear blossoms in the rain, a sight to behold.
Yuzhi was late in life, bearing only one son, sixteen years old, named Chaoyi, courtesy name Jun. He entered private school at five and is now a scholar. In terms of appearance, he is fair-skinned and radiant, with peach-blossom cheeks, not unlike a beautiful young woman of sixteen. As for learning, Chaoyi knows what others know, and he knows what others don't; in truth, he is ordinary.
However, he is notorious among the Sun family for his womanizing. Because of his birth in the inner chambers, although young, he is of high status.
In the past, his nephew's wife and grand-nephew's wife all treated him as an elder, even when they bumped into each other on the street. They all treated him with humility and courtesy, but he paid no heed. Occasionally, upon seeing a pretty daughter-in-law among his children and grandchildren, he would shamelessly strike up conversations, reciting, "The ospreys cry 'guan guan' on the river's islet; a fair maiden, a gentleman's desire," and even going so far as to touch her inappropriately. Knowing that respectable women are virtuous and chaste, how could they possibly have an affair with him! They would change their expressions, go straight home, and never speak to him again. Over time, Sun Chaoyi earned a nickname—everyone, young and old, called him "Uncle Xuan, the Pursuit of Love!" Chaoyi's mother, Gao Yuzhi, devoted herself to her husband and had no time for anything else. One day, Madam He heard about this and was so ashamed that her face turned red. She summoned her grandson Chaoyi by servant, intending to discipline him, but seeing him with his head bowed and speaking softly, her anger vanished without a trace, and she waved him away.
Madam He then thought, "My grandson is nearing marriageable age, full of youthful vigor. It's only natural that he's developing feelings. Since he's aware of such matters, why not choose a suitable wife for him? That way, he'll have someone to remember him by, and perhaps he won't do anything shameful! It's just that his father passed away only a year ago, so we can't have a wedding right away. Oh well, let me look around at my leisure." Madam He then went to her daughter-in-law's room and told Yuzhi about this. Yuzhi agreed wholeheartedly and didn't mention it again. It is said that one afternoon, Chaoyi returned from a literary gathering, walking slowly with his head down.
At this time, the sun shone brightly, a gentle breeze blew, and warmth filled the air. Since the busy farming season was over, most people were probably taking a nap.
Only the ignorant cicadas were screeching loudly in the woods, disturbing everyone's peace. Chaoyi walked for a while longer when suddenly a high wall appeared ahead. He exclaimed in surprise, "How strange! Why haven't I seen this high wall before? Could I have taken the wrong
path today?" Chao Yi looked around and indeed felt that this place was unfamiliar, as if he had never been here before. He grinned and was about to turn back the way he came.
Coincidentally, just then, the door on the right side of the high wall creaked open, and a girl appeared. She was about twelve or thirteen years old, wearing a bright green skirt, short and stocky, with narrow shoulders, round hips, and a slender waist.
How could Sun Chao Yi not take a good look! His eyes bulged out, as if two long nails had shot out of thin air, staring intently at the girl, his gaze shifting rapidly. He thought to himself, "Her figure is quite remarkable. I wonder what she looks like from the front? Beautiful girl, turn around quickly so I can have a good look at her, otherwise this detour will have been in vain."
The girl seemed to know Chao Yi's thoughts and indeed turned around to look at him.
Upon seeing a stranger, the girl let out a soft moan and lowered her head slightly, her face flushing a delicate
blush, radiating a captivating beauty. He saw that the woman had a beautiful face and regular features; though not stunningly beautiful, she was neat and elegant. Her large, bright eyes darted about, revealing a clever and intelligent spirit that was hard to look away from.
Seeing the handsome young man staring intently at her, the girl was momentarily at a loss, clutching the hem of her dress. After a while, she looked up and their eyes met. She let out a soft moan and immediately lowered her head, refusing to meet his gaze again. He didn't know why, as if under some kind of spell, his heart pounded wildly, unable to find peace.
Seeing her blushing shyly, Chao Yi was delighted. He quickly went to greet her, stopping just two steps away, and asked, "Excuse me, sister, what place is this?"
The maid didn't look up, but replied softly, "Young master, this is Xujiawan." Chao Yi was startled, thinking, "This is really strange. How did I get lost? I wonder how far this place is from home? Let me ask again." Chao Yi clasped his hands in a gesture of respect and said, "Thank you for your help, sister. How many miles is this from Sunjiawan in Longyin Mountain?"
The maid couldn't help but chuckle, saying, "Young master is quite an interesting person. Isn't the Sun family compound up there? Don't you know the saying, 'The Sun and Xu families are only separated by a field'?"
Chao Yi had been sitting in the study since childhood, reciting classical Chinese texts. He had no way of knowing the local scenery, no wonder the young woman laughed at him. When the girl smiled, her pearly teeth gleamed, dazzling him and stirring his heart. Chaoyi was stunned, thinking, "To have such a beautiful girl by my side would be the greatest joy in life." Because he was used to being bold, he didn't care about etiquette. So he took two steps forward, hugged the girl tightly, and said in a simple and honest way, "Good sister, come with me, and I guarantee you will enjoy happiness for the rest of your life."
