My stunningly beautiful female boss at 29 (18-21)

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-08-07陈莫言
18.
After I recognized An Xiaomei and her brother, I took her to my rented apartment.
To allow another female protagonist of this book to appear, please allow me to rewind the narrative to a little over a week ago, the day after Uncle An fell ill, and describe it in the third person.
The following events were all told to me by An Xiaomei.
That day, An Xiaomei arrived at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. As soon as An Xiaodong picked her up, the two siblings drove straight to Southwest Hospital.
On the way, An Xiaodong told his sister that their father was still unconscious, and his sister and Uncle Yang were at the hospital with him. The cause of his illness was a herniated cervical disc, which was compressing the blood vessels in his neck, and he needed surgery as soon as possible.
An Xiaomei burst into tears. She had been living in Guangzhou since starting university, and among the three children, she had spent the least time with her father. Hearing that her father's condition was so serious, she was naturally heartbroken.
An Xiaodong, who was driving, could only free his right hand to hold his sister's hand to comfort her.
An Xiaomei stopped crying and asked, "Where's Mom? Did you notify her?"
An Xiaodong said coldly, "Why would I notify her? What does this person have to do with our family?"
In a VIP ward of Southwest Hospital, Uncle An, over sixty years old, lay on the hospital bed, unconscious.
Beside the bed sat an elegant and mature woman, watching her elderly father on the bed. At this moment, her delicate eyebrows were furrowed, her beautiful face, her long black hair, and her sorrowful eyes made her look exceptionally beautiful and gentle.
"Minmin, come lie down on the sofa for a while..." came an old man's voice from behind. An Xiaomin,
thirty-nine years old that year, turned her head and smiled, "No need, Dad, I'm not tired."
That old man was Uncle Yang, who had adopted me with Uncle An fourteen years ago and became An Xiaomin's father-in-law.
Uncle Yang stood up and walked behind An Xiaomin, placing a hand on his daughter-in-law's shoulder. He said softly, "You haven't slept a wink all night, sitting here watching over your father. How can you not be tired? Listen to me, go lie down on the sofa for a while. I
'll take care of your father." An Xiaomin looked up and smiled gently. "Dad, I'm really not tired. Don't worry about me."
"Sigh! You child..." Uncle Yang sighed heavily, patted his daughter-in-law's shoulder, and walked to the side.
An Xiaomin said to him, "Dad, why don't you go back and rest? You've been up all night too."
Uncle Yang said, "What are you saying? He is your father, that's true, but he's also my buddy of decades! And my in-laws of over ten years. Why are you being so polite with me?"
An Xiaomin smiled but didn't speak, continuing to look at her father on the sickbed, her brows furrowing again.
"Sister, Uncle Yang..." An Xiaomei entered the ward, followed by An Xiaodong.
"Meimei, you're back?" Uncle Yang greeted her.
An Xiaomei nodded to him, walked to her sister's side, and asked, "How is Dad?"
An Xiaomin shook her head at her younger sister with a worried look, then stood up and made her sit down. An Xiaomei leaned towards her father, grasped one of his hands, and cried out "Dad!" before bursting into tears. Although she wasn't Uncle An's biological daughter, he had always treated her like his own little daughter, and their bond was deep.
An Xiaomin also shed tears, gently patting her sister's shoulder. An Xiaomei cried and cried, nestling in her sister's arms, hugging her waist and sobbing uncontrollably.
An Xiaomin, tears streaming down her face, comforted her sister, "It's okay, Meimei, don't cry, Dad will be alright."
After An Xiaomei calmed down, An Xiaomin told her sister that their father was not in mortal danger and the hospital was arranging surgery.
The three siblings chatted with Uncle Yang for a while, then An Xiaomin said to her brother, "Xiaodong, take Dad home to rest."
"Okay, sister," An Xiaodong replied. Although he was already a senior partner at a law firm, and An Xiaomei was a senior executive at a large company, the backbone of the three siblings was undoubtedly still An Xiaomin, the eldest sister.
"Don't send me away! Minmin, let me stay with Weiguo a little longer," Uncle Yang said.
An Xiaomin held her father-in-law's hand and said softly, "You've already stayed here with him all night, isn't that enough? Dad, you're over sixty years old. My father has already fallen ill; what if you overwork yourself and something bad happens to you? Listen to me, go back with Xiaodong."
Uncle Yang sighed, "Alright! Let me know immediately if anything happens."
"I understand, Dad," An Xiaomin smiled.
Uncle Yang said again, "What is that kid Yifan doing? His father-in-law is so sick, and he hasn't even shown up yet. It's outrageous. I have to call him."
He took out his phone, but his daughter-in-law stopped him. "Dad, don't call him. The company is extremely busy these days. Please don't bother him."
"No matter how busy he is, is his father-in-law's health more important? By the way, Minmin, did you inform your husband?"
"Yes, he did. He returned to Chongqing early this morning after finishing his business trip. He went to the company to handle some things and will be here soon."
"Sigh! That kid, his lousy company always comes first..."
An Xiaomin looked at her father-in-law and smiled, "Your son is a man. Shouldn't a man prioritize his career? Alright, Dad, let Dongzi take you home. I'll let you know if anything comes up."
She then said to her younger brother, "Xiaodong, after you take Dad home, go and do your work! Meimei and I are here!"
"Okay, sister," An Xiaodong replied, and left the ward with Uncle Yang.
The two sisters sat on the sofa and chatted about their father's condition for a while. An Xiaomin said, "Meimei, before I contacted you last night, I called you once. It seemed like someone else answered. He didn't say anything, but I heard you mumbling something about Xingyan..."
She paused and asked, "Did you see Chen Xingyan?"
An Xiaomei grasped her sister's hand and looked at her, saying, "Yes, sister, I saw him. I saw our Xingyan brother, and I was with him last night."
Hearing her sister's words, An Xiaomin's beautiful eyes filled with tears.
"Then... how is he now?" After a long while, An Xiaomin wiped away the tears that had overflowed from her eyes and looked away, asking.
An Xiaomei gently shook her head. "Not good, to be precise, very bad."
An Xiaomin looked at her sister, her eyes filled with worry. "What happened to him?"
"He's down on his luck, even a bit颓废 (颓废 is a difficult word to translate directly, but it implies a state of being listless, dispirited, or demoralized). He used to drive for ride-hailing services in Guangzhou, and recently became my personal driver, but he didn't recognize me."
An Xiaomin quietly looked at her sister, who continued, "Actually, I knew who he was from the beginning. Before he came to our company, I saw his resume. His experiences from childhood to eighteen were exactly the same as Xingyan's. By the way, he changed his name to Chen Yu, the Yu of honor. I thought, Chen Yu, Chen Xingyan, could this person be my Xingyan?"
"I only became certain when I met him in person. I still remember what he looked like when he was eighteen. Although he's much more mature and weathered now, I can still recognize him. However, I've changed so much since I was six, and I've also changed my name, so he can't recognize me."
"How did you two end up together last night?" An Xiaomin couldn't help but ask.
An Xiaomei laughed, "Hey! Well, our company won a big bid yesterday, and we had a celebratory dinner last night. I got drunk, and he took me home. He's my driver!"
An Xiaomin secretly breathed a sigh of relief and asked, "So, have you let him know who you are yet?"
An Xiaomei shook her head and said, "No..."
She then looked at her sister, "When we were little, I often heard you say that the reason Xingyan ran away from home was because he didn't want to suffer from Mom and Aunt Jiang's temper, or rather, he left for the sake of harmony between our two families."
"So, I'm wondering if he's still willing to accept our two families now? Is he willing to go back to the past? I won't easily acknowledge him until I figure this out."
“You know what? Sister, the first time I met him, in my office, he said to me, ‘President An, my name is Chen Yu, Chen as in ‘ear east,’ and Yu as in ‘honor.’ Although I remained calm and just looked at him coldly, my heart was churning. In my heart, I said to him, ‘Brother Xingyan, don’t you recognize me? I’m your little Mei sister!’ But I didn’t say it out loud. Instead, I coldly told him to leave first and to call him if I needed anything.”
An Xiaomei choked up as she said this. An Xiaomin squeezed her sister’s hand, still quietly watching her.

19.
An Xiaomei wiped away her tears and continued, “So, I decided to punish him. Who told him to cause your depression back then? At the same time, I was testing him, putting on a superior air in front of him, being cold and arrogant. I wanted him to reach his breaking point and one day shout at me, ‘I am Chen Xingyan, your brother! Why are you treating me like this?’”
“I thought, if he recognizes me and takes the initiative to acknowledge me, it means he has moved on from the shadows of the past and is willing to return to our family. But if he recognizes me but doesn't acknowledge me, it means he doesn't want to go back to the past, so why force him?”
An Xiaomin said, “What you did was right. So… is he married now? Does he have children?”
“He was married and divorced, but he has no children. After leaving home, he went to Wuhan and Shanghai, eventually coming to Chongqing to work. Later, he started a company, then the company went bankrupt, and he even went to prison…”
“Ah?” An Xiaomin exclaimed softly.
An Xiaomei said, "He was sentenced to two years in prison because of a fatal accident at the construction site. After his release, he went to Guangzhou and stayed there until we reunited."
Hearing her sister's words, An Xiaomin frowned slightly, her melancholy gaze drifting elsewhere.
"By the way, sister, he's living with a girl sixteen years younger than him now."
"Really?" An Xiaomin looked at her sister with surprise and disappointment in her eyes.
An Xiaomei continued, "Sister, you have no idea how much he's changed. He's become very strange."
"What's wrong?" "
On one hand, he's down on his luck, very decadent, even a bit irresponsible. On the other hand, he's very talented, very thoughtful, a man of refined taste..."
"Meimei..." An Xiaomin asked, "Have you fallen for him?"
An Xiaomei's face flushed slightly, and she smiled, "No! I only see him as my brother."
As she spoke, she looked at her sister, "Sister, do you... still hate him? Hate him for leaving without saying goodbye back then?"
In that instant, An Xiaomin's thoughts returned to that day twenty-three years ago. What happened that day left a deep scar on her sixteen-year-old heart.
An Xiaomin gently shook her head, "Why should I hate him? I already have Yifan, and my son is thirteen years old. Those things are long gone. Now, I just want to be his sister again, and I hope he can come back to our family soon."
"Sigh!" An Xiaomei sighed and said, "Back then, you liked Xingyan, and Yifan liked you. In the end, the man you loved left you, and the man who loved you married you. Is life really like a TV drama? Always unrequited love?"
"Don't talk nonsense!" An Xiaomin interrupted her sister with a slightly flushed face, "I love your brother-in-law very much, understand?"
"Yes, yes, I didn't say you don't love your brother-in-law," An Xiaomei smiled.
“By the way…” An Xiaomin added, “I heard you talking in your sleep on the phone last night, and he must have heard it too. I even called him Xingyan brother on the phone, but he didn’t respond and hung up. He probably already knows who you are, right?”
An Xiaomei nodded, “That should be the case… But when he took me to the airport this morning, he still pretended not to know who I was. I really don’t know what he’s thinking.”
She frowned, “Sister, do you think he’s determined not to come back to our family?”
An Xiaomin paused for a moment, then said, “The shadows left in a person’s youth aren’t so easily erased. Think about it, so many people in the factory called him the son of a thief back then, even Mom and Aunt Jiang said that. How could the shadow in his heart not be big?”
She sighed softly, “Let’s give him some more time. Let’s not pressure him.”
An Xiaomei nodded. An Xiaomin held her sister’s hand, tears welling in her eyes, “Meimei, no matter what, bring him back, okay?” “Yes, sister,” An Xiaomei nodded, tears streaming down her face
.
At this moment, Uncle An, lying on the hospital bed, uttered a weak voice, "Xingyan, Xingyan..."
"Ah! Dad's awake..." An Xiaomin exclaimed in surprise, exchanging glances with her sister before the two sisters quickly went to either side of the bed.
"Dad, Dad..." An Xiaomin squatted by the bedside, holding her father's hand and calling out.
"Xingyan, child, Uncle is so sorry!" Uncle An said with his eyes closed, tears streaming down his face...
That night at my place, An Xiaomei told me about what happened when she returned to Chongqing last time, and the changes in the An and Yang families since I left.
Not long after I ran away from home that year, An Xiaomin developed depression and had to take a year off from school, but fortunately, she recovered after treatment.
Upon hearing this, my heart ached, because I believed that An Xiaomin's depression must have been caused by me.
After that, Aunt Zhuang divorced Uncle An and returned to her hometown of Dazhou to marry another man, where she has lived ever since. Uncle An has never remarried; he, Uncle Yang, and Aunt Jiang retired from the factory many years ago.
An Xiaomin initially enrolled in Chongqing University's combined bachelor's and master's program. After graduation, she became a teacher at an ordinary university and later pursued her doctoral degree at Southwest University while working. She is now an associate professor and doctoral supervisor in the Biomedical Science Department of the School of Biological Sciences at Southwest University.
(Here, I should clarify that in universities, associate professors can also be doctoral supervisors, and lecturers can also supervise master's students; they are not necessarily professors. This is to avoid readers thinking I'm making things up.)
An Xiaodong became a lawyer after graduating from Southwest University of Political Science and Law, and his law firm, which he co-owns with friends, is doing quite well.
Yang Yifan resigned from his senior management position at a real estate development company many years ago and started his own real estate development business; he is now a real estate company owner.
With their three children settled in Chongqing, Uncle An and Uncle Yang also moved from Wanzhou to Chongqing after retirement.
Hearing all this, I felt the gap between myself and my former brothers and sisters was enormous; we were completely in different social classes. At the same time, I felt fortunate that my choice back then was correct. If I had agreed to An Xiaomin's request, she wouldn't be where she is today.
I asked An Xiaomei why Uncle An and Aunt Zhuang divorced back then. In my heart, I didn't want them to divorce because of me.
An Xiaomei said it was because Aunt Zhuang had an affair. At the time, An Xiaomin had just recovered from her illness when she divorced Uncle An and went to Dazhou with that man, where she even had a daughter.
But that man didn't treat Aunt Zhuang well; after a few years, he abandoned the mother and daughter and disappeared. From then on, Aunt Zhuang lived alone with her daughter.
In the years that followed, Aunt Zhuang took her daughter back to Wanzhou a few times to visit the An siblings, but An Xiaodong refused to acknowledge his mother and this "sister."
This story made me quite emotional. In my memory, Aunt Zhuang was very beautiful; when I left, she was only in her thirties, with an exceptionally charming presence. I never imagined that she and Uncle An would end up like this.
"By the way, my sister and Brother Yifan got married, and their son is in middle school now,"
An Xiaomei's words interrupted my thoughts. She looked at me somewhat uneasily.
My heart ached. In our youth, Yang Yifan had always liked An Xiaomin. Now, hearing that they were married and had a grown child, I didn't know whether to be happy for them or sad for myself.
"Xingyan, what's wrong?"
An Xiaomei's voice pulled me back to reality. I smiled. "It's fine. Yifan and Minmin are together. I'm happy for them."
"Brother, come back to Chongqing with me? Is that alright?" An Xiaomei asked cautiously.
I stared at her, stunned. She continued, "For over twenty years, we've all missed you. When my father was in a coma in the hospital, he woke up calling your name."
Tears streamed down An Xiaomei's face, and I cried too. I remembered that day more than 20 years ago, when Uncle An took me from Chongqing back to Wanzhou. At the long-distance bus station, I was afraid to go back and face Aunt Zhuang, so I tried to run away. He chased after me, shouting, "You brat, come back here!"
The surrounding passengers all advised me, "Young man, don't run away. Look how worried your father is! Have some compassion for him!"
Thinking about all this, I really wanted to agree to An Xiaomei's request...

20.
I wiped away my tears and said, "Let bygones be bygones. I'm fine the way I am now."
"Why?" An Xiaomei said, tears streaming down her face. "That happened more than thirty years ago. I wasn't even born when Uncle Chen had that accident. You're no longer the son of a thief. Why are you so stubborn?"
I pointed to my heart and said, "Meimei, don't force me. Uncle An and Uncle Yang were incredibly kind to me back then. I'll remember them for the rest of my life, until I die. But please, don't force me..."
Under her tearful gaze, I paused and continued, "More than twenty years ago, I caused a lot of trouble for both your families. Actually, I'm no different now than I was twenty years ago. I don't want to cause you any more trouble."
An Xiaomei wiped away her tears and said, "Are you still holding a grudge? Did my mother and Aunt Jiang also call you the son of a thief, just like those other people? Let me tell you, brother, Aunt Jiang also regrets it. She still feels guilty to this day."
“Don’t say anymore, Meimei…” I interrupted her. “I know, actually Aunt Zhuang and Aunt Jiang are very good to me. They both have a sharp tongue but a soft heart. Besides, everyone’s circumstances were not good back then, and there was a lot of gossip. People said that Uncle An and Uncle Yang took in the son of a thief, so they must be accomplices of my dad. Some even said that I was Uncle An’s illegitimate child, which is why he cared so much about me. At that time, Aunt Zhuang and Aunt Jiang were also under a lot of pressure.”
“But so many years have passed, no one talks about these things anymore, and we're not even in Wanzhou anymore, so why are you doing this?”
An Xiaomei paused, then suddenly said, “Do you feel unable to face your sister?”
I was secretly startled and asked, “What did she say to you?”
She said calmly, “Don’t I know about you two? You like her, and she likes you. Now she’s someone else’s wife. Is that hard for you to accept?”
I laughed, “Silly girl, why do you say that? I’ve been gone for over twenty years, and my whereabouts are unknown. Do you expect your sister to wait for me forever? Besides, Yifan is also my brother. I’m quite happy that they’re together!”
“Then you…?”
“Don’t say anymore, and don’t force me. Even if it’s a matter of pride or inferiority, please respect my wishes. I’m very satisfied with my current lifestyle, okay?”
An Xiaomei was silent for a moment, then said, “Okay, I promise you. Right now, only my sister and I know where you are. If I don’t tell you, your sister won’t either. But I have a condition, can you agree to that?”
I looked at her, “What?”
“Please accept me.”
My heart skipped a beat, and I laughed, “Silly girl, haven’t I already acknowledged you? How can I accept you again?”
She stared at me, her gaze burning. “That’s not what I meant. I meant, accept that I love you, and that you love me too.”
I was stunned for a moment before I said, “Meimei, I’m your brother. We’re siblings. How can we love each other?”
An Xiaomei kept looking at me. “Why not? We’re not blood siblings. You’re just a child my father adopted. Why can’t we love each other?”
“But…” I avoided her gaze, muttering to myself, as if asking her, and also as asking myself, “You’re so outstanding, so beautiful. There must be many men who like you, men with good qualities. How could you like me?”
“Brother Xingyan, please look at me…”
I had no choice but to look at her. She said, “When you left, I was only six years old. Twenty-three years later, we met again. To me, you were basically a stranger. But after spending this time together, your extensive knowledge, refined character, loyalty, and even your carefree attitude have deeply attracted me, making me fall in love with you involuntarily…”
Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked at me. “Until you beat up Boss Xiao Sang to protect me, even smashing yourself with a bottle, and stood up for me by scolding Boss Wang…”
She choked up, wiping away the tears that spilled from her eyes. “So, I fell in love with you, hopelessly in love with you. Is this okay, Brother Xingyan?”
I stared at her, still in disbelief, unable to believe that this woman, whom any man would dream of, could fall in love with me.
“That’s right. Ever since I broke up with my first love, many men have liked me. Many of them are very good-looking, even good enough to fulfill every woman’s dream. But I’ve only ever accepted one man, the one you saw that day. But I only accepted him because I wanted a safe haven; I didn’t love him. I thought I would never fall in love with any man again, until you came along…”
“I’ve known since I was little that I have an older brother, and I’ve heard adults and my sister talk about you all the time. I often wondered, what is my brother like? Is he tall? Is he handsome? If he met me, would he like me and protect me?”
“I thought I would never see you again, but I never expected that God would bring you into my life. You have indeed done everything a brother should do, caring for me, protecting me, and not letting me suffer even the slightest grievance. But God has given me more than that. Besides giving me a brother, He has also given me a man worthy of my love.”
After An Xiaomei finished speaking, she looked at me with tearful eyes, sobbed, and smiled slightly, “Brother, do you understand what I’m saying?”
I, who had been silent all along, slowly spoke, "But, Meimei, we are, after all, siblings. Once we go back to our past lives, in everyone's eyes—Uncle An, Uncle Yang, Aunt Jiang, and Minmin—in everyone's eyes, we are still siblings. How can we be together?"
"Is this all you're thinking?" She looked at me with tears in her eyes, smiling slightly. "Don't worry about them. If you're willing to accept me and love me, we can not go back to the past. I'll stay with you in Guangzhou and not let anyone interfere in our lives. Now I just want you to answer: do you...love me?"
Her eyes were full of hope and expectation, making it hard for me to face her. My heart was surging. Yes! Did I love her? Actually, from the first day I saw her, I was captivated by her. Even after knowing she was my former sister, I still couldn't stop being drawn to her, wanting to be closer to her. I wasn't sure if this was love?
But one thing I knew very well: I wasn't good enough for her, not good enough at all. The man she should be with is someone far superior to me in every way, not someone like me who has nothing but my age, a failed marriage, and a past of imprisonment.
If I were to be with her, what would others think? How would the people around her view our relationship? Besides, Uncle An would never agree, even though he treats me like his own son. How could he be willing and at ease entrusting his youngest daughter to someone like me?
"Meimei..." I murmured, "Let's be siblings?"
An Xiaomei's tears streamed down her face. "Please answer me directly, do you love me?"
I still couldn't look her in the eye. "What if I love you? What if I don't? Some things are already destined by fate. In this life, we can only be siblings."
She wiped away her tears and asked, "Tell me honestly, is it because of my sister? You still love her, so you won't accept me?"
I felt as if she had hit the nail on the head, and I was startled. Yes, it's been over twenty years. If I had to say what I can't let go of from the past, it's An Xiaomin. She's appeared in my dreams countless times, leaving me with tears streaming down my face when I wake up in the middle of the night.
But I know that whether An Xiaomin is there or not, I won't accept An Xiaomei. It's not that I'm unwilling, but that I can't.
"It has nothing to do with her..." I said calmly. "It's been over twenty years. She's married with children now. We've long since turned the page."
As I said these words, my thoughts drifted back to that heartbreaking morning twenty-three years ago when I left Wanzhou. Only I know that, at least in my heart, this chapter between me and An Xiaomin has never been turned over, and it never will.
"If that's the case, why can't you accept me? Tell me, do you love me or not?"
An Xiaomei's words echoed in my ears again. I calmed my surging emotions and said, "If you insist on asking, I can only say no."
At that moment, An Xiaomei burst into tears, and my heart ached along with hers.
After a long while, she wiped away her tears and said, "Okay, since that's how it is, I won't force you..."
She paused and looked at me again, "But I won't give up easily either. I don't care what you think, or whether what you said is true or not, I'll give you three days..."
In my stunned gaze, she continued, "I'm going to Nanning on a business trip tomorrow and will be back in three days. In these three days, think it over carefully and consider our relationship. After three days, tell me your final answer. If you haven't changed your mind by then, I will respect your decision, but I... will never see you again."
After saying this, she looked at me deeply with tears in her eyes, picked up her bag, and left the house, leaving me alone there.

21.
The next three days were the most agonizing time of my life. The day An Xiaomei returned from Nanning, I was drinking at Lao Gui's bar again. These days I had nothing to do, and nowhere to go except Lao Gui's place.
Lao Gui saw my listless appearance and asked me what was wrong. I told him everything An Xiaomei had said to me that night.
“I knew something was going on between you two. What brother and sister? How old was she when you left? Now you've suddenly run into each other, spending every day in the same car, how could nothing happen?”
Old Gui paused for a moment after speaking, then asked, “So what are you planning to do?”
I took a sip of my drink, shook my head, and didn't say anything. Old Gui nudged me, “Tell me!”
I sighed and said, “I can't possibly agree to her. Look at me, those few trips I drive barely cover the rent and three meals a day, how am I going to support her?”
Old Gui laughed, “She doesn't need you to support her, she's more likely to support you.”
“That's the problem…” I pointed to myself and said, “I can't possibly be a kept man. Do I look like one?”
Old Gui looked me up and down, pursed his lips, nodded, and smiled, “Yes,
you do!” “Damn it!” I slapped him.
Old Gui stopped laughing and sighed, "To be honest, your thinking makes sense. Being a kept man isn't easy!"
I gave a wry smile, "Who says otherwise?"
We both lowered our heads in silence. After a long while, Old Gui looked up at me, "Chen Yu, I think you're the biggest fool in the world."
I looked at him in surprise. He continued, "I'm asking you, do you like her? Not the kind of liking a brother has for his sister, but the kind of liking a man has for a woman."
I stared at him blankly for a moment, then nodded. He slammed his hand on the table and said, "Isn't that settled? What do you care if it's a free lunch or a hard lunch? As long as it's edible, it's good food. Let me tell you, if a man in the world were faced with this situation, nine out of ten would have already pounced on him. Only you, you idiot, are sitting here getting yourself into this mess, thinking you're so unique and principled? How stupid are you?"
He paused, then sighed, "Between men and women, isn't it just this simple? As long as you like her and she likes you, that's enough. Why worry about all that other stuff?"
Old Gui's words were a wake-up call, but I was momentarily at a loss. He pointed to my phone on the bar and urged, "What are you standing there for? Call her! Isn't she coming back today?"
I dialed An Xiaomei's number, but it was switched off.
"She's probably still on the plane, hasn't landed yet?" Old Gui said, and we looked at each other in bewilderment.
I thought for a moment and called a colleague, the receptionist who had introduced me to An Xiaomei on my first day at work.
"Brother Chen, why aren't you at work? We all miss you. Did you resign?"
The receptionist said as soon as the call connected. Ever since I punched Little Sang and berated Fat Wang, my standing among my colleagues has changed drastically.
I cut to the chase and asked if General Manager An had returned to Guangzhou. The receptionist said she was probably still on the plane, but she would be flying to Shanghai immediately after landing. I was shocked and asked what was going on.
"The big boss at the Shanghai headquarters suddenly summoned several branch managers to report to headquarters, and General Manager An was on the list. She only received the notification from headquarters before her flight from Nanning; I booked her ticket."
Hearing the receptionist's words, I cursed inwardly. What kind of boss is this? He just does whatever comes to mind, with no humanity at all.
"Then... when will she be back?"
"Probably two or three days? Brother Chen, you don't know, that's how our Chairman Wen is, he likes to do surprise attacks, and nobody dares to complain..."
At this moment, an almost crazy thought surged into my mind. I asked the receptionist if she could send me President An's flight information. She said no problem, she'd send it to my phone in a bit.
After finishing the call with the receptionist, I told Lao Gui to hurry up and take me to the airport. He asked me why. I said that An Xiaomei was going to fly to Shanghai immediately after returning to Guangzhou, and I planned to find her on the plane.
"You're something else, aren't you? Chasing a woman all the way to the sky. Where the hell were you before?" Lao Gui laughed and scolded.
I went home, packed a few clothes and some other things, and bought a ticket on my phone for the same flight as An Xiaomei. I got into Lao Gui's Jeep Cherokee at the entrance of the community and headed straight for the airport.
I decided not to contact An Xiaomei for the time being, to give her a surprise.
I put on a hat and sunglasses and entered the cabin, and soon saw An Xiaomei sitting in her seat, looking down at her phone. I passed by her discreetly, found my seat, put my backpack in the overhead bins, and sat down.
Our flight was a wide-body aircraft with four seats in the middle and two on each side. My seat was on the far left of the middle, and An Xiaomei was a few rows ahead of me, a window seat on the left.
I secretly planned that if I had the chance, I would quietly sit next to her; if not, I would appear before her when we landed in Shanghai and give her a big surprise.
For a moment, I couldn't help but feel a pang of emotion. When I left Wanzhou back then, how could I have imagined that more than twenty years later, I would decide to be with An Xiaomei, who was only six years old at the time?
Back then, I resolutely left the An and Yang families, left An Xiaomin, who was devoted to me. Now, my former lover is married and a mother of a thirteen-year-old boy, while I'm about to start a new relationship with her younger sister. Is this some kind of cycle? For
more than twenty years, I've been running away from that experience, avoiding that large family, but now I've stepped back in. I don't know if my decision was right or wrong, but Lao Gui was right. Between a man and a woman, as long as I like you and you like me, that's enough. Why worry about so many other things?
I secretly observed An Xiaomei. She kept looking at her phone, occasionally glancing up. Although I couldn't see her face from behind, I could sense her feelings.
Today was the deadline she gave me, and she had been waiting for my call or message, but I hadn't contacted her. When I boarded the plane, I saw a lingering sense of loneliness on her face.
Then, I received a text message from An Xiaomei on WeChat: "Have you thought it through? I'm flying to Shanghai now, and I'll have to turn off my phone soon."
I really wanted to go over and appear before her. But I restrained myself.
After the plane took off and flew for a while, I saw An Xiaomei leave her seat and head towards the restroom at the back of the cabin. Her face still held a look of loneliness.
I quickly pulled down my hat to cover my face and leaned back in my seat, pretending to be asleep.
After she walked past me, I turned back and watched her until she entered the restroom. I immediately got up, opened the overhead bins, took out my backpack, and went to the middle-aged man sitting next to An Xiaomei. I said, "Excuse me, friend, the lady sitting next to you is my girlfriend. Could I switch seats with you?" The
middle-aged man looked at me with some surprise. I pointed to my seat and said apologetically, "My seat is over there. I had a fight with my girlfriend and chased her all the way to the plane. Could you please help me?"
"Okay." The middle-aged man smiled, stood up, opened the overhead bins, and took his suitcase.
"Thank you, thank you. Let me take it to you." I thanked him repeatedly.
The middle-aged man said it wasn't necessary and took the suitcase to my seat. I put my luggage down and sat down, then turned back to the middle-aged man in my seat and clasped my hands together, "Thank you, thank you..."
The middle-aged man smiled slightly and gave me an OK sign. I turned back, put on my sunglasses, and waited excitedly for An Xiaomei to return.
After a while, I heard footsteps approaching. I guessed it was An Xiaomei returning. I pulled my hat down low and rested my head on the chair cushion.
The footsteps stopped beside me. "Excuse me," she said.
I remained seated. Then I heard An Xiaomei's voice again, "Sir, please move aside."
I moved aside to make way. Once An Xiaomei sat down, I said slowly and deliberately, "Miss, are you going to Shanghai on a business trip?"
She ignored me. I asked again, and she closed her eyes and said coldly, "Please let me have some peace and quiet, thank you."
"Why bother? It's a long journey, let's chat!" I looked at her.
An Xiaomei opened her eyes and looked at me angrily. "I already said..."
Her gaze suddenly turned to surprise. I took off my hat and sunglasses, and smiled at her, "Miss, don't you recognize me?"
"Oh my god! It's you!" An Xiaomei couldn't help but be overjoyed and playfully hit me several times.
I quickly gestured for her to be quiet. "Shh..."
Tears immediately streamed down her face. She turned her back to me, covering her mouth to stop herself from crying.
