While chatting with me, Aunt Zhou neatly folded my son's military training uniform. Aunt Zhou's thoughtfulness and meticulousness made her feel just like my own sister-in-law, which made me feel exceptionally warm and close.
My sister-in-law called. I picked up the phone and blushed slightly. "I didn't see it. I'm in the car. Um, delivering clothes to the kids. Yes, okay, bye." I knew it was her lover calling. I hung up after a few simple, vague words, probably afraid I'd hear that the man on the other end of the line had a special relationship with her.
We fell silent instantly; no one spoke. It was only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity.
"Let's stop at the fruit shop and buy some fruit for our sons," the sister-in-law said first.
I stopped the car in front of a fruit shop by the roadside. My sister-in-law pressed down on my hand, which was resting on the gear shift, and said, "Listen to your sister-in-law, don't get out of the car." Her grip on my hand felt like it was glued on; it was soft and boneless.
My sister-in-law went back to the car and wrapped a banana for me, but she didn't eat any herself, just watched me eat. I'd just taken a bite when my phone rang. My sister-in-law took the half-eaten banana from me, and I answered, "I haven't arrived at school yet, almost there. You won't be home for dinner again, huh? Okay, I know." My wife told me she had a dinner engagement that night and might be home late. I reported the gist of the call to Sister-in-law Zhou, and she laughed at me.
"What are you laughing at?" I asked my sister-in-law.
"It's nothing, I'll laugh if I want to," the sister-in-law said, still smiling.
I felt an itch on the back of my hand, and when I looked down, I saw my sister-in-law teasing it with a leftover banana peel. I asked her what she was laughing at, and it turned out she had eaten the banana I had left. I had completely forgotten about it after answering my wife's call.
