The Chinese ethnic group that practices polyandry

    page views:1  Publication date:2013-12-13
Polyandry is a unique marriage and family system that accounts for only 1% of all marriages worldwide. In China, it is still practiced among the Tibetan , Lhoba, Monpa , and some Naxi ethnic groups.
The polyandrous system among the Monpa people of Tibet, China, is mainly characterized by brothers sharing a wife.
In Tibetan areas today, polyandry and the practice of sons-in-law marrying into the wife's family still exist, along with marriage customs that place the authority of the maternal uncle above all others; women play a dominant role in the family.
Traditional Tibetan polyandrous families take several forms, including brothers sharing a wife , friends sharing a wife, and, in rare cases , father and son sharing a wife. However, the most prevalent and widespread form in the Kham region is brothers sharing a wife . Before liberation, Mr. Tan Yinghua surveyed 45 polyandrous families in what is now Ganzi Prefecture. Among them, 44 families shared a wife with brothers , totaling 101 men, averaging 2.3 men per family. There was one family that did not share a wife with brothers, with 2 husbands.
Polyandrous families are most commonly characterized by brothers sharing a wife , followed by three brothers sharing a wife. Four or more brothers sharing a wife is extremely rare. In Dingqing Village, Dingqing County , Changdu , there are 120 polyandrous families with 257 husbands , averaging 2.29 husbands per wife. In Tuoba Township, Changdu County , there are 9 polyandrous families: 7 families have two husbands (78%), 1 family has three husbands , and 1 family has four husbands (11%).
