Paradox H - ☆, Caring and Not Caring

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-04 08:12:45
The vehicle drove smoothly on the road. At this moment, Ling Sinan sat in the back seat and looked out the window. This scene was no different from the feelings of the prisoners being escorted in the vehicle.
"Didn't your boyfriend come to say goodbye?" A slightly sarcastic voice came from the front seat. Qiu Shanhua glanced at his daughter in the rearview mirror.
In her mind, Ling Sinan had been away from home for so many days, so the person she was asking for help from was naturally her scoundrel boyfriend whom she had met twice. Otherwise, how many parents would be willing to take in their child's classmate for so long during the college entrance examination period?
Logically, as a well-mannered mother, she would personally visit the other family to apologize for the inconvenience her daughter had caused. However, there's no such thing as a free lunch. As a businesswoman, Qiu Shanhua knew this well—running away from home before graduating high school and living with a hoodlum would only cost her her reputation by selling her body, and Qiu Shanhua didn't want to ruin her own image because of Ling Sinan.
Ling Sinan did not speak.
Since her reunion with her mother, she has remained silent, neither wanting to refute nor intending to admit anything, sitting quietly in the back seat like a still doll.
What's the point of saying anything? It's pointless. I'm just a pawn in her game, not her daughter.
Qiu Shanhua stared at the pair of clear, bright eyes in the rearview mirror. The evening streetlights shone through the car window onto her pure pupils, making them appear red or blue—a passionate red and an elegant blue. Her eyes were like water, calm and still at this moment, yet they held a cool and serene quality. She looked beautiful no matter how you looked at her.
She saw a resemblance to her younger self, but even more beautiful.
A young girl in the prime of her life, youth that inspires envy.
Qiu Shanhua withdrew his gaze, his knuckles curling slightly.
The light and shadow of the streetlights also brushed past her profile, leaving behind a somber, timeless impression.
When Ling Qingyuan returned home, it was dinnertime, and the house was brightly lit.
He took off his shoes in the entryway, pressed his long fingers against his shirt collar, and expertly buttoned up the collar, which was already open up to the third button.
Unlike the growing heat outside in June, the Ling family's apartment remained as cold as ever if the heating wasn't on. Even the largest floor-to-ceiling windows and the most abundant natural light couldn't mask the chilly atmosphere.
Perhaps the coldness hidden deep in one's heart cannot be reached by sunlight.
He pressed one hand against his shoulder, which suddenly felt numb, tilted his head slightly, and walked into the living room to greet people, saying, "I'm back."
Two people were sitting at the dining table in the restaurant, and Liu Ma was busy in the semi-open kitchen.
Ling Qingyuan paused in his tracks as he was heading to the restroom.
He turned his head and met the gaze of the girl who happened to be looking up at him.
Her eyes were clear, and just one glance was enough to make his heart race.
"Next time you go out, don't take that detour again." Qiu Shanhua, with his back to him, stirred the chopsticks in his bowl and said this casually, but with a hint of threat.
Ling Qingyuan's hand, which was hanging by the seam of his trousers, suddenly clenched, his knuckles protruding and his bones clearly defined.
His heart was pounding—of course it was pounding, but never before had it felt like someone was squeezing his heart, making it hard to breathe.
Ling Sinan, who was sitting there, quickly gave him a wink.
Realizing his brief loss of composure, he gave a soft reply and quickly threw himself into the bathroom.
He scooped up handfuls of water and splashed it on his face, staring at himself in the mirror with a fire in his eyes that no amount of cold water could extinguish.
With arms outstretched, bracing against the sides of the sink, her hips heaving evenly, she let the water droplets trickle down her cheeks.
I almost lost my composure. Calm down, Ling Qingyuan.
Ling Miao didn't come back for dinner; it was just the three of them eating together.
Ling Qingyuan sat down in his usual seat next to Ling Sinan, as always.
"You were following me?" His thin lips were slightly pursed. He picked up his chopsticks and straightened them. His tone was not like an interrogation, but more like a casual conversation with his parents.
Qiu Shanhua glanced at him, her lips twitching slightly. "What? I'm just checking where my son went without me on his back. Is there anything wrong with that?" The implication was that if I was wrong, he was wrong too, and what I did was perfectly justified.
“There’s nothing wrong with it.” Ling Qingyuan lowered his eyes, a faint smile playing on his lips, a smile that was somewhat indifferent.
This isn't the time for him to vent his emotions freely; he's not alone here.
With his gaze lowered, he saw a girl's fair hand reach out and take the shrimp from the plate, and he couldn't help but smile again—his sister really was easygoing.
The laughter sounded somewhat grating to Qiu Shanhua.
"You really like your sister."
The air froze for a moment.
The dining table was deathly silent except for the sound of chopsticks scraping against the bowls and plates; even breathing was barely audible, as if something had taken everything away.
Ling Sinan froze for a moment, then subconsciously glanced at her younger brother beside her.
Go ahead and refute me, Qingyuan, what are you thinking?
"Is it strange for a younger brother to care about his older sister?" he finally spoke, his eyes expressionless. He casually picked up a few vegetables with his chopsticks and put them into his bowl, responding calmly, "Or, Mom, what do you want me to answer?" His tone was light and indifferent, deftly deflecting the question.
"Then you should be happy for your sister, she's getting engaged." Qiu Shanhua stared at Ling Qingyuan and smiled slightly.
His eyelids twitched slightly, and he raised an eyebrow as he looked up: "Engaged?"
“You still remember President Shen of Huanmao Shiyu, right? He’s the one who always wanted to hear you play the violin whenever we met,” Qiu Shanhua continued. “His son, Shen Yu, is quite interested in your sister.” Qiu Shanhua, who doesn’t eat much, put down his chopsticks when it came to business: “Sinan is really lucky to have met him once and hit it off immediately.”
The air felt so thick it seemed to freeze time. Ling Sinan's gaze was fixed on the grains of rice in the bowl, and she counted almost every single grain remaining at the bottom...
After a long while, Ling Qingyuan's voice was hoarse and low. "I remember that Shen Yu is a playboy... and you're only eighteen years old, you haven't even gone to university yet, why are you in such a hurry to get engaged? Right, sister?" At the end of her sentence, she glanced at Ling Sinan with a questioning look, as if she was seeking confirmation or affirmation.
Ling Sinan quietly looked back at him, her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but the sound in her throat seemed to be taken away, and only air came out.
"Your sister agreed."
She saw the light in Ling Qingyuan's eyes instantly vanish into a black hole.
Her heart sank.
“I didn’t agree to the engagement.” Ling Sinan suddenly put down her chopsticks and looked away. “I only agreed to spend three months getting along well with him.”
Qiu Shanhua leaned back in her chair, her hands casually resting on her chest, a slight smile playing on her lips: "It's a relationship with engagement as the premise—given Shen Yu's conditions, three months should be enough to cultivate some feelings, so I won't force you."
Of course you're not forcing me. All you want is this three-month relationship with the Shen family.
But she heard the disordered breathing of the person next to her.
Her heart pounded uncontrollably, a bittersweet feeling spreading through her, even chilling her fingertips. She dared not speculate about his feelings at that moment, nor dared she look at his face.
The meal was tasteless.
Ling Sinan finished eating first and returned to her room.
She wanted to find an opportunity to explain to him.
The phone was smashed in such a rush this afternoon that there wasn't even time to send a message.
Just as she heard footsteps outside the door, she rushed to the door and opened it, only to be met with Qiu Shanhua's gaze—Ling Qingyuan had only shown her his back.
"I... need to use the restroom." Ling Sinan paused, then brushed past her mother.
After strolling around the bathroom, Ling Sinan noticed that her mother had locked her younger brother's room with a key. Just then, Qiu Shanhua left Qingyuan's room.
...What's going on? This isn't a solitary confinement cell.
Qiu Shanhua glanced at her as he turned around and said, "Don't wander around tonight." He then left without explaining anything further.
Ling Sinan stared blankly at her younger brother's locked room door.
“We are different from most couples in the world. Once we make a decision, we have no choice but to go all in and there is no going back.”
“So…” His eyelashes trembled slightly. After a long pause, he finally asked the last question with a mixture of trepidation and caution: “Are you still willing?”
He looked at her.
She did not respond immediately.
It wasn't hesitation, it was stunned.
Looking back, it seems that I, who used to think his feelings were just a passing fancy, wasn't that mature at all.
He is not yet an adult, but age does not mean everything.
In their relationship, he probably considered things more than she did.
He didn't even leave himself a way out.
He was clearly the one who had to give up more.
"Sister?" He couldn't help but feel anxious after not receiving a reply for a long time.
Ling Sinan sighed, noticing his slightly choked breathing, and couldn't help but laugh as she hugged him tightly.
"You make mistakes sometimes too."
"Um?"
"With you, I should be considered a winner in life."
"How can it be considered starting from scratch?"
Ling Qingyuan finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Perhaps, love is just such a strange thing.
Even though you know your place in the other person's heart, you still want to get affirmation.
"Speaking of which, you've actually been in solitary confinement all this time?" Ling Sinan suddenly remembered this question.
Ling Qingyuan blinked.
Stop acting cute, why didn't you tell me?
"It's not exactly solitary confinement, but she's keeping a closer eye on things." Ling Qingyuan glanced at the locked door. "She only locked this door when you came back today."
Ling Sinan frowned: "What exactly do you mean? I was called back by her, but after I came back she locked your door again? Even if she wanted to lock someone up, shouldn't she have locked me up instead?" After all, Ling Qingyuan is their precious son.
“Because she knows that if she locks you up, I'll be the one who resists.” Ling Qingyuan chuckled, relaxing as he sat down on the edge of the bed, his elbows casually propped up on his spread legs. “But locking me up here wouldn't be considered cruel. At most it would just be…”
He looked up at his sister and said, "It's just separating the two of us."
“She…knows something? She wants to spy on me, but if I live outside, it will be difficult for her to control our meetings.”
Ling Qingyuan remained silent. His mother may not have known about his relationship with his sister, but she had certainly sensed their intimacy to some extent.
"The phone," she reminded her.
Ling Qingyuan was puzzled.
"You should still be careful with your phone. The phone I gave her before probably had a tracking device installed, which is why she found where I live."
He paused for a moment, then slowly clenched his fist: "...I understand."
"As for this time, you asked me why I agreed to her request."
Ling Sinan walked to the window and looked down at the colorful but cold city.
No amount of color could brighten the gloom in her eyes.
"That was so that..."
"My dignity."
