In Chapter 16 of *A Step into the Past* , the scale of

Empress Dowager Yanyan's

Chu Palace, among the palaces Xiang Shaolong had ever seen, was second only to the Xianyang Palace, but its security was even more stringent. The palace was surrounded by high walls, three zhang high, with an exquisite corner tower at each of the four corners. A moat, five zhang wide

, surrounded the walls, its water crystal clear. Most formidable was the pointed wooden fence in the middle of the moat, rising above the water, making it impossible to swim across. There were two city gates, accessible by adjustable sliding doors. Inside the high walls, the palaces were layered, divided into the outer court and the inner court. The inner wall connecting the two bell and drum towers served as a boundary. An inner palace gate served as the passageway between the outer and inner courts. The layout is symmetrical along a central axis, with a main avenue connecting the north and south city gates and the inner palace gate. Eight grand halls and nearly sixty courtyards are neatly arranged along the central axis on both sides of the avenue, adorned with flowers, rocks, fish ponds, small bridges, flowing water, and towering ancient trees, creating a magnificent and splendid scene.

Xiang Shaolong and Li Yuan entered the palace through the north gate. First, there was a square square, then a small river ran through it. After crossing the bridge, they arrived at the two main halls, "The Hall of State Affairs" and "The Hall of Ceremonies," both built on white stone platforms, surrounded by railings and walkways, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere. The other six smaller palaces, four located in the outer court and two in the inner court, are all named after figures from Chu mythology: the "God of Fire," "God of Rivers," "God of Punishment," and "God of Fate" in the outer court. The inner court houses the "Hall of Fragrance" and the "Hall of the Witch."

Listening to Li Yuan's introduction, Xiang Shaolong was most impressed by the Hall of the Witch, but these names alone revealed that the Chu people were indeed the most creative and romantic people among all the states. In other countries, such a bold and innovative palace name would be unthinkable. Meanwhile, his mind raced. Just now, after Li Yuan proposed killing Lord Chunshen, he changed the subject, seemingly giving himself time to process this difficult suggestion. However, he had already suspected Li Yuan's ill intentions.

Lord Chunshen had held power for a long time, had thousands of retainers, and enjoyed high prestige in various countries. He was powerful and deeply entrenched in all aspects. If Li Yuan were to kill him, it might cause a major upheaval. Therefore, he needed to find a scapegoat, and that person was himself. Upon arriving in Shouchun, he had immediately used force to expel Li Chuangwen, who had seized the Dian Prince's residence, seemingly without regard for the consequences. In Li Yuan's eyes, he was a reckless and impulsive man.

Assuming he could incite Wan Ruiguang to assassinate Lord Chunshen, he could pin the blame entirely on Wan Ruiguang, thwart the Zhuang family's plot to restore their kingdom, and even seize Lady Zhuang for himself—killing three birds with one stone. No scheme could be more ruthless. From the perspective of the Chu people, everyone hoped to use Li Ling to subjugate the vassal states and reintegrate their lands into Chu territory. Thus, Li Yuan and Lord Chunshen were in cahoots with Li Ling, merely appeasing the beautiful Lady Zhuang!

After the carriage passed through the inner palace gates, it entered the inner court, where the King of Chu handled daily affairs and resided. The main buildings were the Wunu and Fanglie Halls, and the six palaces on the east and west sides. Each palace consisted of four courtyards, and there were three gardens: the Imperial Garden in the central axis, and the East and West Gardens on the east and west sides, all boasting beautiful scenery and endless wonders.

Li Yuan was clearly very learned, introducing him to the legends of the gods represented by each temple name. His elegant speech was truly captivating. No wonder that although Madam Zhuang was fond of Xiang Shaolong and knew that Li Yuan was not a good person, she still seemed somewhat unable to resist him. At this moment, he spoke of the River God and the Witch, laughing and saying, "Our two most beautiful goddesses, the River God and the Witch, do not reside within the territory of Chu, but rather in the Luo River of Han and the Wu Mountain of Qin. With captivating smiles and ethereal grace, they dwell in distant, remote mountains and rivers; just thinking about it makes one yearn for them."

Xiang Shaolong said, "What the Grand Uncle mentioned earlier about Lord Chunshen..." Li Yuan patted his brow affectionately and said, "We'll discuss this later. I think Brother Wan should take some time to understand Lord Chunshen's true nature and realize that I, Li Yuan, am not slandering a good person before making a decision. But Brother Wan, please remember that this is a matter for men. If women find out, not only will they reveal their true intentions, but it will also cause them endless worry, doing them no good."

Xiang Shaolong secretly praised this as a brilliant idea and naturally nodded in agreement. Li Yuan was deceiving him, and he was deceiving him as well; they were even, and neither had anything to complain about. At this moment, the carriage turned east, but they didn't know which courtyard Tian Dan was in. Li Yuan smiled and said, "I have a mansion outside the palace that is ten times larger than this, but I still prefer to live in the palace and spend most of my time here." Xiang Shaolong thought to himself, "You really want to control Li Yanyan closer to home."

The guard opened the carriage door, and Xiang Shaolong put aside his thoughts and followed Li Yuan down from the carriage. Li Yuan and Xiang Shaolong sat down in the main hall, as host and guest, and pretty maids served fragrant tea. Xiang Shaolong glanced around and couldn't help but admire Li Yuan's taste.

Looking towards the central courtyard, there was a row of eighteen wooden doors with windows, a platform pond, and a small pavilion and artificial rockery in the pond, all connected by a stone bridge. The courtyard was five hundred paces deep and wide, planted with camellias and osmanthus. In the heat of summer, the camellias were in full bloom, and the osmanthus and tangerines were fragrant, the red and white flowers complementing each other, a scene of spring in full bloom. The furniture in the hall was all made of finely carved pear wood, the floor was covered with brocade, and the decorations included antique porcelain, hanging carvings, and screens. Xiang Shaolong had no such thoughts. If he hadn't won the heart of the talented Ji first, and due to various circumstances, he might have truly lost to him in that competition.

Because the north hall was shaded and adjacent to a pond, it was cool and refreshing, a welcome respite from the heat. Xiang Shaolong and Li Yuan sat comfortably in the center of the hall, sipping fragrant tea. For a moment, he found it difficult to regard this handsome and seemingly upright Li Yuan as an enemy. This kid was quite shrewd; he even knew how to use the kinship of family and brothers to launch a psychological attack on this dissolute and helpless "traitor to a fallen kingdom." Of course, he couldn't let him "disappoint." Pretending to express gratitude, Li Yuan clapped his hands lightly, making a crisp sound, and said, "Brother Wan, please take some time to observe the situation before considering my words. Alas! The reason why Li Yuan is not afraid to speak frankly with someone he doesn't know well is solely based on righteous indignation and the future of our Great Chu; there is no other reason."

With his applause, four graceful beauties dressed in Chu attire, with high buns, hooded hats, and shawls, emerged from the side door, dancing gracefully. They knelt before the two men, bowing and then gracefully sitting within arm's reach. The veils covering their faces made them even more captivating. Only now did Xiang Shaolong understand Ji Yanran's words: if this young man intended to curry favor, he certainly possessed extraordinary methods. He couldn't help but wipe a cold sweat from his brow, relieved that Li Yuan only knew the Book of Songs and the Chu Ci, and didn't understand maxims like "absolute power corrupts absolutely," or "the allegory of honey."

Li Yuan said, "When we make friends, we either use beautiful women or gold as tokens. These four women come from different places, each with their own charm, but they are all exceptional beauties, and all are innocent young girls. Brother Wan, you can lift their veils one by one and see which one catches your eye the most, as my greeting gift to you."

Xiang Shaolong thought to himself, "Wow, Li Yuan is probably the most cunning person I've ever met, the one who understands psychological tactics best." Lifting the veils of the four women to choose from not only greatly increases curiosity but also provides a highly stimulating invasion of privacy. Although he had no intention of acquiring beauties, he still had a strong urge to lift the veils and see. But of course, he couldn't do that. His face darkened, and he said, "I appreciate the Grand Uncle's kindness, but as long as I, Wan Ruiguang, have not restored the Dian Kingdom, nothing else matters to me."

Li Yuan, instead of being angry, was delighted. He laughed heartily, waved away the four women, and said, "I wonder if Brother Wan believes me? I was deliberately testing you just now, to see if you would be tempted by beauty. If so, I'm even more relieved." He clapped his hands again, and a pretty maidservant served exquisite wine and food. The two sipped their wine and chatted.

Li Yuan was quite talkative, constantly asking about the situation in Dian, showing great interest. Fortunately, Li Yuan knew even less about Dian than he did, and when he couldn't answer, Xiang Shaolong would casually make up stories of strange customs he'd seen on television to appease him, without any flaws. He had traveled to many parts of China during his military training, and combined with his knowledge of the country's terrain and customs, he spoke with considerable confidence.

Halfway through the meal, the gatekeeper announced the arrival of the Empress Dowager. Xiang Shaolong was startled and was about to retreat when Li Yuan calmly had someone move the food and wine away. He then pulled Xiang Shaolong behind a screen in a corner and said, "Brother Wan, hide here. When I ask about helping your country restore its former glory, you'll know who's behind this." Xiang Shaolong exclaimed, "What if the Empress Dowager finds out?"

Li Yuan patted his chest and assured him, "When my sister and I speak, no one else will be around. If anything happens, I will take full responsibility and won't let Brother Wan suffer any injustice. But remember, you can only listen, not look." Last time, playing Dong Machi required him to act rough and boorish; this time, Li Yuan had him portrayed as brave but reckless. Xiang Shaolong could only dumbfoundedly accept this absurd arrangement.

The sound of jade pendants jingled, and the stunningly beautiful Xiao Lie Wang finally arrived. The door closed, and judging from the footsteps, the palace maids and guards had indeed retreated outside. Xiang Shaolong recalled Longyang Jun and Lady Zhuang's descriptions of Li Yanyan, and no longer heeded Li Yuan's instructions. He peered through the gap in the screen towards the center of the hall.

Upon seeing her, he immediately stopped breathing. He couldn't believe he was seeing a beauty whose looks and temperament rivaled both Ji Yanran and Qin Qing. To be fair, in terms of charm and elegance, she was still slightly inferior to Ji Yanran, and in terms of nobility and elegance, she was not as good as Qin Qing. Yet, she possessed an innate allure, a captivating charm, a delicate fragility, and an aura that evoked pity in all. Standing gracefully in the center of the hall, her delicate brows slightly furrowed, she stirred in any man a powerful urge to embrace her and tenderly caress her. She was the kind of stunning beauty that men longed to take to bed with, yet dared not harm in the slightest.

Madam Zhuang was right; a faint, indescribable sorrow shrouded her refined and ethereal face, as if nothing in this world could bring her joy. Li Yanyan's hair was styled in a cloud-like bun, even her bangs were styled in a cloud shape, elegantly resting above her long, arched eyebrows, truly deserving the description "fragrant cloud-like bun, thick with morning brows." Her sideburns were styled into a curved, thin, and translucent shape, her cloud-like hair languidly combed, ethereal as cicada wings, further emphasizing her perfectly sculpted face and her beautiful, silently sorrowful eyes. Her slender, graceful figure, perfectly proportioned, adorned with a phoenix crown and emerald robes, gave her an ethereal beauty that transcended all others, unattainable and aloof.

She wore various ornaments, but the most striking was a necklace dangling from her delicate neck to her breasts. The upper part consisted of over twenty gold beads inlaid with jewels, while the lower part held a dewdrop-shaped jade pendant. It shone brightly, mirroring the jeweled phoenix crown atop her head, clear and sparkling, yet it could not diminish her refined and otherworldly elegance, surpassing all otherworldly riches and extravagance. Xiang Shaolong couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. If she were willing to sleep with him, Xiang Shaolong was certain he would act immediately.

At this moment, Li Yuan came up behind her and gently removed her outer robe, revealing a long, flowing black dress embroidered with exquisite phoenix patterns and gold trim, cinched at the waist with a jade belt, exuding a noble and magnificent air. When Li Yuan's fingertips touched her fragrant shoulder, the beautiful Queen Dowager of Chu visibly trembled, lowered her gaze, and looked extremely strange.

Xiang Shaolong was shocked, wondering if they were not actually siblings, but he also knew that if so, how could he hide it from Lord Chunshen? A beauty as renowned throughout the country as Li Yanyan could not be impersonated. Li Yanyan's full, sensual red lips trembled slightly before she softly said, "Why is elder brother here? I invited Xiuer to see her latest rust embroidery!" Her voice was sweet and clear, with a resonant and magnetic quality; heaven had truly been too kind to her.

After years of calamities, Xiang Shaolong could remain unmoved even by alluring beauties like Lady Zhuang and Ying Ying, but upon seeing Li Yanyan, he was about to succumb. At the same time, a strange thought crossed his mind: was Li Yuan's determination to possess Ji Yanran because only the talented Ji could replace Li Yanyan in his heart? Could it be that the siblings had a secret relationship?

In this era, polygamy was a common practice. When a woman married a man of high status, her sisters and even nieces would often accompany her to become the groom's concubines, not to mention the maids who would accompany her as part of the dowry. Even more unusual was that when a king married off his daughter, rulers of the same surname or friendly states would, according to custom, send women from their own clan as concubines.

In addition, kings and ministers could take any woman they fancied into their palaces and mansions at any time, so the number of concubines was unimaginable. Polygamous families were extremely complex, prone to fratricide and morally questionable acts. Li Yuan and Li Yanyan were very likely half-siblings, a handsome couple. Li Yuan, with his wolfish ambition, wanted to use Li Yanyan to repeat Lü Buwei's schemes, even deceiving Lord Chunshen into believing he was still capable of prowess, fathering a child in his later years, and then remarrying him to the foolish King Xiaolie. One can imagine that when King Xiaolie saw Li Yanyan, he had forgotten even his own father's name; how could he have imagined that the "miracle" in Li Yanyan's womb was orchestrated by Li Yuan?

If Shaolong hadn't learned of the relationship between Li Yuan, Li Yanyan, Lord Chunshen, and King Xiaolie from Zhao Mu, and hadn't understood Li Yuan's ruthless nature, he could never have drawn such a shocking conclusion based on just a single action and a fleeting expression between the two. If Li Yuan knew, he would rather kill him than give Xiang Shaolong the chance to spy on the two alone. Thinking of this, his breathing became rapid.

After Li Yuan ushered Li Yanyan to sit down, he said softly, "Xiuer is embroidering in the east wing. It's a rare opportunity, so may I ask my elder brother to speak with Yanyan?" Upon hearing this, Xiang Shaolong realized that Li Yuan's seemingly unintentional encounter with Li Yanyan was actually a deliberate arrangement, intended to allow him to overhear a conversation detrimental to Lord Chunshen, thus solidifying his resolve to use him as a tool to assassinate Lord Chunshen.

Li Yuan must have known that Li Yanyan would come to see Guo Xiuer's embroidery after lunch, and given that the embroidery was unfinished and difficult to move, the most powerful Empress Dowager of Chu had to condescend to come here, demonstrating the close relationship between her and Guo Xiuer.

Li Yanyan sighed and said, "Speak!" Li Yuan was quite apprehensive in front of this girl. He coughed and cleared his throat, saying, "I want to discuss with Yanyan the matter of the Queen Consort of Dian and her son asking us to send troops to help them restore their kingdom."

Li Yanyan coldly said, "Brother, you've taken a fancy to the Queen Consort of Dian, haven't you?" Li Yuan was immediately embarrassed because Wan Ruiguang was eavesdropping. He said unhappily, "How can Yanyan think of your brother like that? I'm only thinking of the Great Chu. Our late emperor has just passed away. If we are indifferent to the demands of the Queen Consort of Dian and her son, it might incite the rebellion of the vassal states. If they side with the Qin people, the Chu Kingdom will be in danger!"

Xiang Shaolong found it amusing. Li Yuan's generous words showed that he truly had good intentions for him. After a moment of silence, Li Yanyan smiled faintly and said, "This matter cannot be accomplished by your and my decision alone. We must also consult the opinions of the military generals and ministers, otherwise, disputes will inevitably arise. Has my elder brother mentioned this to Lord Chunshen?" With

the death of King Xiaolie, Lord Chunshen immediately became the most influential figure in both the military and political spheres of the Chu court. It was for this reason that Lady Zhuang rushed back to Shouchun without delay to seek Lord Chunshen's help. Little did she know that Lord Chunshen was the one who plotted to kill her and her son. Li Yuan was delighted and said proudly, "Of course I did, but Lord Chunshen is still determined to use Li Ling to quell the feudal lords. He even said that everyone except the Queen Consort of Dian should be eliminated. Alas! If Li Ling gains power, will he be willing to obey the king's orders? That's why my elder brother had no choice but to speak to the Empress Dowager."

This was the first time he had addressed Li Yanyan as the Empress Dowager. Xiang Shaolong, who was intently watching, secretly thought how clever Li Yuan was. Regardless of whether these words were true or false, since Li Yuan said them in front of Empress Dowager Chu, even a lie would seem true. If he were the real Wan Ruiguang, he would believe it without question. Since he was going to die anyway, he would naturally obey Li Yuan's orders to gamble with him

. After a moment of contemplation, Li Yanyan slowly said, "How about I asked my elder brother to invite the Princess Consort of Dian and her son to stay in the palace for a while? If they come here, no one will be able to harm them. Alas! Widows and orphans, they are truly pitiful." Xiang Shaolong felt a surge of emotion. He heard Li Yuan explaining why Madam Zhuang and her son had refused, and he thought to himself that Li Yanyan was so kind-hearted. It seemed that all her actions were forced upon her by her clansmen, led by Li Yuan. No wonder she was so unhappy, and he couldn't help but feel a pang of pity.

Lost in thought, Li Yanyan softly said, "Brother, go see the Princess of Dian right now. No matter what, bring her, her son, and their entourage to the palace. Even if we can't send troops to restore their kingdom, we absolutely cannot allow them to be killed. Zhuang Qiao has rendered unparalleled service to our Great Chu; surely he should show some compassion for the descendants of loyal officials!" Li Yuan, overjoyed at his success, stood up, only to realize that Li Yanyan showed no intention of standing. He asked in surprise, "Yanyan, weren't you going to see Xiuer?"

Li Yanyan replied calmly, "I want to stay here alone and think things through. No one is allowed to disturb me." Li Yuan couldn't help but glare at the screen, startling Xiang Shaolong into immediately shrinking back. Li Yanyan said displeasedly, "What are you hesitating for, Brother?"

Then came the sound of doors opening and closing, one could imagine the anxiety and distress of Li Yuan, who had been forced to leave. Xiang Shaolong was also in great pain; if this beauty sat there in meditation for an hour, he would suffocate. Li Yanyan's shrill voice rang out: "Whoever you are, get out here right now!" Upon hearing this, Xiang Shaolong immediately broke out in a cold sweat. If he were to be beheaded by Li Yanyan like this, it would be an utter injustice.
Chapter Two: Reunion in a Foreign Land

Xiang Shaolong strode out from behind the screen with the air of a dragon and a tiger, knelt on the ground at a distance, and said in a deep voice: "Wan Ruiguang, a minister of a fallen country, deserves to die a thousand deaths. Please, Your Majesty, grant me my punishment." Li Yanyan coldly looked at him and said indifferently: "Raise your head!"

Xiang Shaolong was secretly delighted. He raised his head and looked deeply into her eyes, appearing resolute and ready to die. Li Yanyan's beautiful eyes flashed with a sharp light, and she said solemnly, "Now, answer every question I ask you. If you hesitate even slightly, I will immediately call someone in to take you out and behead you. Don't underestimate me because I am a woman. I have been learning riding, archery, and swordsmanship since childhood. No ordinary person can get close to me." Xiang Shaolong thought to himself, "No wonder you are so bold." He sighed and said, "Your Majesty, you

might as well just behead me. If you ask about the matter concerning the Grand Uncle, how can I speak without his permission?" Li Yanyan said unhappily, "Who is really in charge of our Great Chu now?" Xiang Shaolong knew he couldn't go too far and said sadly, " "I, Wan Ruiguang, am but a subject of a fallen nation. Returning to Shouchun this time, I have no hope of survival. I only wish to die to do what I can for my country, and that would be enough for me."

Li Yanyan retorted angrily, "Do you want to die? I'll make you wish you were dead. I'll even accuse you of attempting to assassinate me, so that your family will be implicated." Xiang Shaolong laughed and said, "In the end, you just want to destroy my Zhuang family. Fine! I, Wan Ruiguang, accept my fate."

He didn't intend to antagonize her, but the current situation was complicated, and the relationship between Li Yuan and Li Yanyan was even more inexplicable. If he obediently submitted and betrayed Li Yuan, she would surely despise him. It would be more worthwhile to test the extent of her sympathy for the Zhuang family. Li Yanyan stared at him fiercely, her face shifting between light and dark, clearly unsure of what to do with this heroic and fearless man.

Seeing that he had the upper hand, Xiang Shaolong kowtowed three times heavily on the ground, saying, "This is to thank the Empress Dowager for protecting my Zhuang family earlier. Now that the Empress Dowager has changed her mind, I am still very grateful. I only hope that I can appease the Empress Dowager's anger with my death, and I beg the Empress Dowager to spare the last remaining branch of the Zhuang family." After speaking, he swiftly took two steps back, knelt down again, and drew his sword to commit suicide.

Li Yanyan shouted, "Wait!" Of course, Xiang Shaolong would not kill himself. If Li Yanyan did not stop him, he would have no choice but to break through the leaky window behind him and escape back to the Zhuang mansion at top speed, and then try to escape for his life. At this moment, he secretly thought it was a close call. Like a freeze-frame in a movie, he held the sword to his neck and said with a bitter smile, "What else does the Empress Dowager want?"

Li Yanyan sighed and said, "Put the sword back in its sheath first, and sit down in front of me!" Xiang Shaolong did not say a word, put the sword back in its sheath, moved to a spot ten steps in front of her, and sat down comfortably, his expression neither arrogant nor humble. This era values heroes above all else, and whether Xiang Shaolong is a hero is a matter of opinion. However, because he comes from the 21st century, a time of equality for all, although he now follows local customs and etiquette, he naturally exudes a fearless spirit that makes him stand out from the crowd.

After scrutinizing him for a while, Li Yanyan sighed softly, "Did my elder brother ever instruct you to assassinate Lord Chunshen?" This time, it was Xiang Shaolong's turn to be greatly surprised. He hadn't expected Li Yanyan to be so clever, having been instructed by Li Yuan to hide behind the screen and eavesdrop, and then deliberately speaking ill of Lord Chunshen, to deduce such a conclusion. He feigned hesitation and said, "The Grand Uncle may have this intention, but he hasn't formally told me yet."

Li Yanyan's tone turned cold as she said, "If you kill Lord Chunshen, do you think anyone in your family will still be alive?" Xiang Shaolong was a little unsure whether she was on Li Yuan's side or Lord Chunshen's side, and said, "Of course, I've become a scapegoat!"

Li Yanyan was stunned for a moment, and said in surprise, "Scapegoat? What a strange term, but it sounds quite fitting. A lamb is indeed only left to be slaughtered." By this time, Xiang Shaolong was very familiar with the mentality of people in the palace. Li Yanyan was like another Zhu Ji, lonely and restless, so when she suddenly encountered someone like him, she casually used him for amusement. He had a flash of inspiration and said, "Isn't it more fitting to say that the black dog gets the food and the white dog suffers the disaster?"

Li Yanyan didn't understand for a moment. After thinking for a while, she chuckled, then realized she had lost her composure and composed herself, but her tone softened. She said calmly, "You are not as brave and cunning as you appear, only knowing how to wield a sword. Sigh! Go! In the end, none of this is your fault. I'm just angry that you dared to peek at me." Xiang Shaolong dared not show any joy. After kowtowing to express his gratitude, he stood up and said, "Please, Your Majesty, show me a way to leave." Li

Yanyan said, "After I leave, you can leave through the side door, through the central courtyard, and from the back. If you don't want to lose your head, you'd better not tell the Grand Uncle about what I said, or I will not spare you." Xiang Shaolong ignored her words, gave a casual reply, and was about to leave the central courtyard. Li Yanyan said unhappily, "Stop! Did you even hear me?"

Xiang Shaolong replied frankly, "This humble subject doesn't care much about his own head, so I haven't been particularly concerned. But if the Empress Dowager says so, I will be displeased. Even if I am torn apart by five horses, I will obey until death." Li Yanyan's almond-shaped eyes widened in anger at first, but upon hearing the last few words, her expression softened, and she sighed, "If you are not a truly wicked person, then you are an honest and upright one. With someone like you in Dian Kingdom, there is hope for the restoration of the kingdom. Go!" "I never want to see you again."

Xiang Shaolong was taken aback. "Didn't the Empress Dowager just order the Grand Uncle to send us into the palace?" Li Yanyan said irritably, "Do you think it's that easy to see me? Get out!"

Xiang Shaolong smiled bitterly, "If the Empress Dowager really wants me to get out, I'd rather you kill me. Has the Empress Dowager ever heard of 'A scholar can be killed but not humiliated'?" Li Yanyan clearly hadn't heard of it. She only felt that this man's words were witty and captivating, truly rare in her life, and it was not advisable to have much contact with him. She looked furious at him and turned to walk towards the gate.

Xiang Shaolong took the opportunity to retreat to the courtyard and quickly went to the back room. His heart was still filled with Li Yanyan's beautiful figure. He pushed open the door to go out, when a fragrant breeze wafted in, and a figure rushed straight towards him. In his dazed state, Xiang Shaolong only knew that the other party was a woman. How could he dare to let her bump into his arms? He reached out to press on her fragrant shoulder. The woman exclaimed in surprise, reached out and pressed her hand on his chest, used the force, and stepped back.

Several shouts and curses came from the back room. Xiang Shaolong bumped into the woman he almost collided with and was startled. Who else could she be but Guo Xiuer, who had married into the Li family? The maids following behind Guo Xiuer rushed forward aggressively, but Guo Xiuer blocked them with one hand and said in a coquettish tone, "Don't be rude! You're General Wan Ruiguang, a friend of the Grand Uncle." She gave Xiang Shaolong a meaningful look before bowing and saying, "Please forgive me, sir, for not being able to see clearly."

Xiang Shaolong vaguely felt that Guo Xiuer had seen through his identity, but he didn't know where the flaw was. He felt a headache, but also a sense of pleasure. He returned the bow and said, "Please forgive my offense, Madam Grand Uncle." Guo Xiuer shouted at the four maids behind her, "Aren't you going to check if the Empress Dowager has left yet?"

The four maids rarely saw this gentle and elegant lady speak so sharply. Although they wondered who this person was, they still hurriedly obeyed and went to do so. Guo Xiuer said softly, "Is the General leaving? Let me see you off!" She led the way to the back gate and said to the two guards, "Go and fetch a carriage for General Wan."

One of them obeyed and left. Guo Xiuer used an excuse to dismiss the other guard, and when only the two of them remained, she whispered, "Xiang Shaolong! I've missed you terribly. Why did you come here? Are you trying to harm Xiuer's husband?" Xiang Shaolong then realized she had seen through his disguise and sighed, "How did you know I was Xiang Shaolong?"

Guo Xiuer whispered, "When my hand touched your chest just now, I felt that phoenix-shaped jade pendant. I've played with it since I was a child, of course I recognize it! Xiuer is so happy that you've really been wearing it all this time." Xiang Shaolong then understood. Guo Xiuer said softly, "Shaolong, could you please spare Xiuer's husband?"

Xiang Shaolong was deeply moved. If Guo Xiuer wanted him dead, a single cry would be enough to finish him off. Yet, even though she suspected he had come to assassinate Li Yuan, she refused to do so, only pleading for him. This showed she was determined not to betray him. He couldn't help but ask, "Does he love you?" Guo Xiuer nodded firmly, then sighed, "What good is that? He has too many women!"

Xiang Shaolong knew, of course, that Li Yuan was a womanizer, and earnestly said, "Don't worry, Xiuer, I didn't come here for him." Only after the carriage had gone far away did Guo Xiuer return to the courtyard, heartbroken.

As soon as the carriage left the palace gate, two riders arrived. Xiang Shaolong recognized one of them as the refined and handsome Dong Luzi. This man had made a name for himself in the martial arts arena in Handan, and along with another swordsman, Lou Wuxin, were the two most famous masters under Li Yuan. Dong Luzi respectfully reined in his horse and said, "The Grand Uncle is waiting for Master Wan at the Weihong Tower. Please allow me to lead the way." Another man had already instructed the charioteer to change course. Xiang Shaolong laughed, "Why lead the way? Isn't the carriage heading that way? May I

ask your esteemed name, sir?" Dong Luzi was a little embarrassed. In Shouchun, they were used to this kind of unbridled behavior. He coughed dryly and introduced himself. At this moment, the sound of hooves rang out, and a group of more than twenty knights came running. The leader was about twenty years old, dressed in nobleman's warrior attire. He had a rough face and a strong build, and it was clear at a glance that he was a brave and skilled warrior. His eyes fixed on Dong Luzi, and immediately shot out two cold glints, his expression excited.

Upon seeing the young man, Dongluzi snorted coldly and whispered to Xiang Shaolong, "Master Wan! This is Huang Zhan, the seventh son of Lord Chunshen. He is known for his bravery and fierceness, and is considered one of the best horsemen, archers, and swordsmen in Shouchun. The Grand Uncle of the State has strictly forbidden us from offending him. If he is disrespectful in his words, please

forgive him, Master Wan." As Xiang Shaolong secretly thought that Huang Zhan was a local tyrant from Shouchun, he blocked the way, parting to the left and right, effectively cutting off all traffic. Dongluzi bowed and said, "Dongluzi greets Young Master Huang." Huang Zhan grunted, spurred his horse forward, and came to Dongluzi's side, his face arrogant as he glanced at Xiang Shaolong. Dongluzi hurriedly said, "This is General Wan Ruiguang of the Dian Kingdom, who has just arrived in Shouchun."

Huang Zhan's spirits lifted, and he chuckled, "So this is Wan Ruiguang, the one who forcefully drove Li Chuangwen out the door. Why don't we find a place for Huang Zhan to learn from his superior skills, lest outsiders ridicule Shouchun for having no one to rely on?" Xiang Shaolong found it amusing; it turned out this was just a brute who relied on strength but lacked strategy. No wonder Li Yuan had gained power.

Dongluzi said in a deep voice, "Young Master Huang..." Huang Zhan interrupted him mercilessly, "You dog slave! Who gave you the right to speak?"

Dongluzi lowered his head and remained silent, but he was clearly furious inside. Huang Zhan stared disdainfully at Xiang Shaolong and mocked, "General Wan, are you perhaps a little scared?" Xiang Shaolong smiled slightly and said, "Young Master Huang, I am not so arrogant as to think that Shouchun has no one to rely on. However, the sword in my hand is only used to fight enemies on the battlefield or to protect the country and its fields. You should understand this principle well."

Huang Zhan's expression changed and he said, "Are you mocking me for not knowing how to kill enemies on the battlefield?" Xiang Shaolong was now even more aware that he was just a brave and fierce person. He calmly said, "If Young Master Huang is interested, we can choose a day to have a public sparring match. However, this matter must first be approved by your lord. Please, Young Master!"

These words were a combination of soft and hard tactics, making it clear that he was not afraid of Huang Zhan. Huang Zhan had never encountered such a formidable opponent before. After a moment of stunned silence, he shouted, "It's a deal then. You, surnamed Wan, shouldn't back down at the last minute!" Xiang Shaolong laughed loudly, "Don't worry, young master. To be able to fight against a master is exactly what I, Wan Ruiguang, have been longing for."

Hearing the pride and confidence revealed in his laughter, Huang Zhan was taken aback. He turned to Dong Luzi and said, "Xiao Zhu'er from Fanghua Pavilion is now my woman, Huang Zhan's woman. Dong Luzi, you'd better not go there again." With that, he let out a whoosh and led his entourage away on horseback. At this time, both sides of the street were filled with long lines of carriages and horses.

Dong Luzi glared at Huang Zhan's retreating figure with a venomous look. Only after they turned onto another street did he take a deep breath and say, "I really hope General Wan can kill this brat with a single sword stroke."

Shouchun was the place where Xiang Shaolong frequented most of the entertainment districts since arriving in this era. The most prosperous area, Fanglie Avenue, adjacent to the inner city and named after the god of wine, alone boasted hundreds of brothels, stages, dance halls, and taverns, all privately owned, demonstrating its immense prosperity. According to Dong Luzi, most of the courtesans came from conquered countries, with Yue women commanding the highest prices. The "sources" could be directly "purchased" from places long exploited by the Chu royal family, or from captured slaves of conquered nations purchased from the government. Just thinking about the situation made Xiang Shaolong shake his head and sigh.

Weihonglou was one of the largest entertainment venues in Shouchun; the other two were Shennvzhai and Fangliege, which Huang Zhan had warned Dong Luzi against going to. Weihonglou is a group of courtyards surrounded by high walls. Within the garden are seven or eight traditional courtyard houses. The main building is two stories high. Looking out the windows, one can see the imposing, golden palaces of the Chu Kingdom, the inner city walls, the moat, and the famous Ying Garden, a scenic spot in Shouchun. Ying Lake, located in the center of the garden, is like a bright mirror embedded among the trees, a truly delightful sight. Xiang Shaolong's residence, the Dian King's Mansion, is located at the eastern end of Ying Garden.

Guided by Dongluzi, Xiang Shaolong ascended to the second floor of the main building. Four beautiful maids in colorful robes knelt to greet him, offering two basins of water for him to wash his hands and face—a pomp and circumstance unmatched by the states of Jin and Qin. The person in charge was a large, fat man named Shuqi, a master of flattery, exceptionally adept at knowing exactly how to flatter. Even Xiang Shaolong felt he needed to reward him to feel at ease.

Li Yuan was drinking in a side room near Ying Garden, accompanied by Lou Wuxin and Yan Fu, two former defeated enemies of Teng Yi. Upon seeing Xiang Shaolong, he invited him to sit down and asked with a grave expression, "Has the Empress Dowager discovered Brother Wan hiding behind the screen?" Xiang Shaolong's mind raced; he knew he had to choose between buying Li Yuan or buying Li Yanyan. He sighed and said, "The Empress Dowager had strictly forbidden me from revealing anything, but I, Wan Ruiguang, am not afraid of death, and the Grand Uncle has been so devoted to our family. Yes, the Empress Dowager somehow knew I was hiding behind the screen."

He finally decided to buy Li Yuan. The reason was ironic: Li Yanyan was kind-hearted; offending her would still leave room for maneuver. Li Yuan, however, was an absolute villain; if the Empress Dowager found out he was lying, things would be dire. Li Yuan readily agreed, "Brother Wan thinks so highly of me, so naturally I, Li Yuan, will do my best to protect you. You can rest assured. Hey! Guess how she knew you were hiding behind the screen? I only realized it after it happened." Xiang Shaolong genuinely didn't know, scratching his head and saying, "Grand Uncle, please tell me the story!"

Li Yuan said, "There are two reasons. First, she already knew from the gatekeeper that Brother Wan and I were drinking and chatting. Second, there were the footprints on the ground. When the Empress Dowager asked me to leave, I looked back and saw the footprints on the ground extending from deep to shallow towards the screen, which revealed the flaw." Xiang Shaolong secretly thought how close he had come to disaster. If he had claimed that the Empress Dowager had only been there in a daze for a while before leaving, Li Yuan would have immediately seen through his act.

Li Yuan smiled and said, "Brother Wan! I'd like to toast you." Lou Wuxin, Yan Fu, Dong Luzi, and the others all raised their cups. After several rounds of drinks, Xiang Shaolong offered himself up, saying, "The Empress Dowager seems to vaguely know that the Grand Uncle of the State deliberately asked about our country's affairs, wanting me to know who is hindering my Zhuang family's restoration. She even gave me a stern reprimand."

Li Yuan said nonchalantly, "Brother Wan, please recount the entire process of your meeting with the Empress Dowager without omitting a single word. This matter is of utmost importance, so please do not conceal or omit anything." Xiang Shaolong immediately gave a half-truthful account, concealing the most crucial details, such as Li Yanyan seeing through Li Yuan's words that he, Xiang Shaolong, wanted to assassinate Lord Chunshen.

After frowning and pondering for a moment, Li Yuan repeatedly asked about other details, forcing Xiang Shaolong to even mention drawing his sword to commit suicide. Then, with a strange expression, he said, "I know my Empress Dowager sister's personality best. She rarely talks so much to anyone, and what's strangest is that she didn't punish Brother Wan at all." Turning to the others, he asked, "What are your thoughts?"

Lou Wuxin and the other two all had strange expressions but dared not voice their opinions. Li Yuan slapped his hand angrily, "Just say it! Do you think I can't guess? I just wanted to confirm it with you." Lou Wuxin bowed his head respectfully and said, "In the end, the Empress Dowager is still a woman, perhaps… Hey! You understand what I mean, sir!"

Li Yuan glanced at Xiang Shaolong and laughed, "Look at them, men, talking about women with such hesitation, isn't that ridiculous?" Now it was Xiang Shaolong's turn to be puzzled. Had he guessed wrong? If Li Yuan and this beautiful woman had a perverse relationship, he would at least feel some jealousy for her taking a liking to another man. But seeing him so happy now, it seemed illogical.

Li Yuan raised his cup and said, "Let's have another drink!" Xiang Shaolong, confused, raised his cup with everyone. Li Yuan put down his cup, his eyes gleaming with a captivating light, and said with longing, "My sister, the Empress Dowager, finally couldn't resist the temptation and has fallen for Brother Wan. These matters between men and women are the hardest to explain, but it's the truth. Brother Wan's restoration of the kingdom is now within reach."

Xiang Shaolong cursed inwardly. First, he was wanted to be an assassin; now he wanted him to be a dancer and a male prostitute. Shaking his head, Xiang Shaolong said, "Uncle Tai, you misunderstand. The Empress Dowager was only concerned about our Zhuang family's affairs, which is why she spoke a few more words to me and thus let me off the hook. It shouldn't involve matters of men and women." Li Yuan excitedly said, "Of course, this might just be wishful thinking. However, I will test her with words. I know her too well; she can deceive anyone, but she can never deceive me."

Xiang Shaolong solemnly said, "Uncle Tai, if you want me, Wan Ruiguang, to take up my sword and kill the enemy, I will not flinch, but..." Li Yuan interrupted him, "Good! A true hero indeed. But Brother Wan, have you considered that those who achieve great things must not only be unconcerned with trivial matters but also stop at nothing? Otherwise, Brother Wan, there's no need to come to Shouchun; you might as well just return to Dian Kingdom and see if that's possible." "With the sword in my hand, I'll kill all the traitors."

Xiang Shaolong was speechless, and at the same time, he was greatly puzzled and asked, "I have a question. After all, Li Ling is still a member of the Li clan, the maternal uncle of the Grand Duke. Why does Lord Chunshen protect him, while the Grand Duke wants to deal with him?" Li Yuan sighed for a day and gestured to Yan Fu, saying, "Yan Fu, you explain!"

Yan Fu said solemnly, "General Wan, you are unaware that even within the Li clan, there are different factions. The most powerful is of course our eldest brother, and another faction is led by our eldest brother's uncle, Taizhu Li Quan: he is in charge of all domestic sacrificial affairs and has recently been colluding with Prime Minister Lord Chunshen. Li Ling and Li Chuangwen both belong to their faction, hence their discord with our eldest brother."
Xiang Shaolong then understood. On the surface, Lord Chunshen and Li Yuan seemed to get along very well, but internally, there was fierce competition. Lord Chunshen therefore won over the forces within the Li clan that were hostile to Li Yuan in order to attack Li Yuan. It was precisely because of this former prisoner that Lord Chunshen changed his stance, from supporting the Zhuang family's restoration to opposing and sabotaging it. Ultimately, none of them were good people. In this situation, Li Yanyan naturally became the most crucial figure; whoever gained her support would ultimately prevail.

The most powerful positions in the Chu court were, of course, those of Right Chancellor Lord Chunshen and Left Chancellor Li Yuan, followed by the Grand Sacrificer, Grand Master, Grand Judge, and Grand Historian. Among the latter four, the Grand Sacrificer, who also oversaw the law, held the most power. With the Right Chancellor and the Grand Sacrificer joining forces, it's no wonder Li Yuan was at a disadvantage. From this perspective, Li Yuan wasn't entirely without intention to restore the Zhuang family's kingdom, because the restored Zhuang family would become Li Yuan's trusted power base, helping him stabilize other vassal states and greatly increasing his own power to suppress other opposing forces.

Li Yuan said, "The Empress Dowager's intention to invite the Princess Consort and the Crown Prince of Dian to the palace this time was actually Li Quan's idea. Although the stated reason is noble, she really just doesn't want you to associate with other vassal states and reach secret agreements, which would be detrimental to Li Ling, right? Brother Wan, do you understand now?" Xiang Shaolong pretended to be grateful and said with tears in his eyes, "Thank you for your guidance, Grand Uncle Li."

Li Yuan pondered for a while and then continued, "I will handle this matter by making excuses to the Empress Dowager. The matter of Lord Chunshen can be put aside for now. The most important thing right now is to find out what the Empress Dowager is up to." "Whether you have feelings for Brother Wan or not, that's when you can decide what to do next." He stood up and said, "I'll go back to the palace now and have the three of them keep you company while you drink and make merry. The girls here are exceptionally beautiful; I guarantee Brother Wan will be satisfied."

Xiang Shaolong had no interest in prostitutes. He stood up and bowed, saying, "I appreciate the kindness of the Grand Uncle, but as a minister of a fallen kingdom, I have no time for pleasure." Seeing that he had no interest in anything other than the matter of restoring the kingdom, Li Yuan gladly said, "Then let me go ahead with Brother Wan!" They left together.

Chapter Three: Intrigue at the Door

Xiang Shaolong returned to the Dian King's Mansion and saw more than ten imperial guards guarding the gate. After entering, he learned that Li Yanyan had personally ordered these men to protect the mansion. Upon entering the mansion, they were immediately summoned to speak with Madam Zhuang. After listening to Xiang Shaolong's account, Madam Zhuang angrily exclaimed, "I never imagined Lord Chunshen was such a person! How my late father-in-law treated him back then, how could he now be joining forces with the Li clan to harm us?"

Xiang Shaolong, having seen such things many times, comforted her, "How many people aren't blinded by self-interest? Fortunately, we don't need to rely on anyone. As long as we get rid of Tian Dan, we can immediately leave this place of trouble and do our best to plan for the restoration of our kingdom. Let them fight amongst themselves." Madam Zhuang sighed softly and whispered, "Fortunately, I still have you to rely on."

Xiang Shaolong was secretly alarmed and changed the subject, asking, "Is there anything special today?" Madam Zhuang's spirits lifted, "We've come at the perfect time. The various marquises and kings have either sent important officials or come in person to offer their condolences. They all deeply cherish the kindness of my late father-in-law, except for those who support Yelang, who are supporting Li Ling." "Everyone outside said they would support us with military pay and supplies if we raised an army. In recent years, the power of the Yelang people has greatly increased, and everyone hopes that we can restore our kingdom and suppress the ambitions of the Yelang people. I heard that King Huaciwa of Yelang will also come to pay his respects this time?"

Xiang Shaolong frowned and asked, "Will Li Ling come?" Madam Zhuang shook her head somewhat blankly, then sighed and smiled bitterly, "If the Chu court is willing to accept him to come to Shouchun, it means that Chu has officially recognized his identity. I don't think Li Yuan will allow this to happen."

Xiang Shaolong said in a deep voice, "I think there is a high chance that he will come. Otherwise, Lord Chunshen would not have deliberately invited you back and sent someone to assassinate you on the way. In my opinion, he must be coming together with King Huaciwa of Yelang. Li Zicheng's occupation of the Dianwang Mansion was to create momentum for Li Ling. It's just unexpected that we are still alive and well. With the death of King Xiaolie, Shouchun has fallen into the hands of various forces." During the struggle, Li Yanyan, knowing the ins and outs of the matter, decided to send people to guard the Dian King's Mansion. Madam Zhuang's expression changed. "Shaolong! I am but a woman, and in this situation, I am completely at a loss. How should I deal with this?"

Xiang Shaolong said, "Now we need to figure out one more thing: why did Taizhu Li Quan suggest we move into the palace? One possibility is that Li Ling could move into the Dian King's Mansion openly, while Lord Chunshen, under the pretext of security, would confine us within the palace. This would prevent us from contacting other princes and openly demonstrate to the world that Li Ling has officially become the ruler of Dian. The methods are indeed extremely despicable." Madam Zhuang angrily said, "Is Li Yanyan just going to let them manipulate her like this?"

Xiang Shaolong said, "We haven't truly figured out what kind of person Li Yanyan is, but in my opinion, she is more distant from Li Yuan and closer to Lord Chunshen and Li Quan." "Yes, otherwise Li Yuan wouldn't have been so overjoyed by Li Yanyan's special treatment of me." Madam Zhuang looked at him closely for a while and nodded, saying, "You are indeed a man who can make women's hearts flutter. Li Yanyan has always hated men, but perhaps she will change because of you."

Xiang Shaolong exclaimed, "Hates men? Does she like to be a lesbian?" Madam Zhuang asked in surprise, "What is a lesbian?"

Xiang Shaolong realized he had misspoke again and explained, "It means liking to be with women of the same sex, hey!" Madam Zhuang smiled and said, "I haven't heard of that. I only know that since she was old enough to understand, she has never touched anything that a man has used. She is also very cold to men. Otherwise, Li Yuan wouldn't have guessed that about her just because she talked to you for a while."

Just then, Zhuang Kong walked in without even knocking on the door and said, "The Empress Dowager and the Grand Master of Ceremonies have arrived!" Xiang Shaolong and Madam Zhuang looked at each other in surprise, both greatly surprised and at a loss for what to do. Li Yanyan, her face veiled, sat high in the main hall of the Dian Prince's Palace, facing the entrance. The Grand Master of Ceremonies, Li Quan, stood respectfully to one side, holding his court tablet. Fierce imperial guards lined both sides of the hall, officials arranged in ranks up to the entrance, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere.

Madam Zhuang, Xiang Shaolong, and Zhuang Baoyi kowtowed and paid their respects. The accompanying master of ceremonies shouted, "Rise!" Madam Zhuang and the others stood up. Xiang Shaolong secretly observed the Grand Master of Ceremonies, Li Quan. He had a long, narrow face, a tall, slender figure, and a long, flowing beard. He appeared to be around forty years old, possessing a somewhat otherworldly air, but his pale face suggested excessive indulgence in wine and women, and his constantly shifting eyes indicated a wicked nature. Empress Dowager Li Yanyan calmly said, "I wonder if the Grand Uncle of the Imperial Clan has come to see the Princess and the Crown Prince and convey my message?"

Of course, Madam Zhuang wouldn't lie so blatantly, and unsure what to do, Xiang Shaolong coughed and said, "Your Majesty, the Grand Uncle of the Imperial Clan once..." The Grand Master of Ceremonies, Li Quan, interrupted him coldly, saying, "Your Majesty is questioning the Princess Consort of Dian; someone else should answer on your behalf." Xiang Shaolong almost drew his sword and killed him; this man was truly outrageous.

Madam Zhuang coldly said, "My brother Wan Ruiguang's words are equivalent to my own." Li Quan snorted and looked at Li Yanyan, whose face was hidden behind a deep veil. Li Yanyan nodded and said, "General Wan, please speak!"

Xiang Shaolong secretly thought that if they didn't retaliate, they wouldn't even have a foothold in Shouchun. He calmly asked, "Your Majesty, is the traitor Li Ling currently on his way to Shouchun in alliance with the King of Yelang?" Li Yanyan and Li Quan were both stunned, frozen in place. The atmosphere became extremely awkward and uncomfortable. Xiang Shaolong's eyes flashed with a sharp light as he loudly proclaimed, "Please answer this humble subject, Your Majesty."

Li Quan snapped out of his daze and roared, "Wan Ruiguang, how dare you be so disrespectful to the Empress Dowager?" Xiang Shaolong asked in annoyance, "Please forgive my foolishness, Your Majesty. I was inquiring about matters concerning our Dian Kingdom. How is that disrespectful?"

Li Quan was always more domineering than Li Yuan and rarely tolerated being contradicted, but in this situation, he couldn't be unreasonable and was momentarily speechless. Xiang Shaolong coldly stared at him, a chilling smile playing on his lips that sent shivers down Li Quan's spine, before turning to Li Yanyan, adopting an air of fearlessness and awaiting her reply. Li Yanyan calmly said, "Li Ling did request to come here, but I refused him outright. As for whether he accompanied Khwarazm, I don't know."

Xiang Shaolong laughed and said, "Then I dare bet my head that Khwarazm and Li Ling, those two traitors, have already arrived in Shouchun. Otherwise, why would the Empress Dowager and the Grand Master of Ceremonies have come in person to invite us into the palace?" Li Quan's expression immediately changed, and he shouted, "How dare you!"

Xiang Shaolong laughed wildly, "What dare you say? Since Chu wants to destroy our Dian Kingdom, we are unwilling to endure humiliation any longer. Empress Dowager, please return to the palace: after we have offered sacrifices to our ancestors, we will all commit suicide immediately. There is no need for the Empress Dowager to trouble herself any further." Li Quan's expression changed again. If this happened, it would surely alienate the feudal lords, and they might all side with the powerful Qin, which would be extremely bad. This was the thing the Chu people feared most.

Li Yanyan's delicate body trembled slightly, and she didn't know how to deal with this situation. Madam Zhuang knelt down and embraced Zhuang Baoyi, but the boy remained standing tall, showing no fear whatsoever. Xiang Shaolong's eyes, sharp as a hawk's, were fixed on Li Yanyan. He certainly wouldn't be foolish enough to commit suicide; if necessary, he would escape immediately, which was better than being imprisoned in the palace and at the mercy of others. His biggest fear was that someone would discover the flying needles on his body; then even Li Yuan would come to kill him.

Just then, a series of clashing weapons rang out outside the door. Li Yuan stormed in, shouting angrily, "Who dares to stop me!" The eight imperial guards at the door raised their halberds, blocking his path. Li Yanyan retorted sweetly, "Let the Grand Uncle of the Imperial Clan in!"

Sheathing his halberd, Li Yuan returned his sword to its sheath, displaying a truly domineering heroic air. Xiang Shaolong saw Madam Zhuang's beautiful eyes fixed on Li Yuan, a look of infatuation on her face, and he knew things were going badly, but he was powerless to do anything about it. Li Yuan strode over to Xiang Shaolong's side, bowed, and had just stood up when Li Quan sneered, "Grand Uncle of the State..." Li Yanyan coldly interrupted him, saying, "This matter will be handled by me!"

Li Yuan glanced at Li Quan disdainfully and said in a deep voice, "Forgive me for not knowing the art of flattery, but if the Empress Dowager continues to allow treacherous people to instigate her, the calamity of national ruin is imminent." Ignoring Li Yanyan's instructions, Li Quan said urgently, "What does the Left Prime Minister mean by this? You must give me justice." He then knelt down before Li Yanyan and kowtowed, saying, "Your Majesty, please do justice for this old minister. Even when the late King was alive, he never uttered a single insult to this old minister."

Xiang Shaolong thought to himself that this Li Quan was indeed no decent person. No wonder he was bribed by Lord Chunshen. He never imagined that power in the three states of Qin, Chu, and Zhao had all fallen into the hands of the Empress Dowager, for different reasons. King Xiaocheng of Zhao died from an overly decadent lifestyle and the resulting pressure; King Zhuangxiang of Qin was poisoned by Lü Buwei; and King Xiaolie of Chu likely perished from Li Yanyan's pregnancy.

Li Yanyan, her face hidden behind a veil, was enigmatic and difficult to fathom. After a long silence, she slowly said, "Grand Uncle, please don't spread alarmist rumors." In fact, Xiang Shaolong still couldn't discern Li Yanyan's true stance. She seemed quite protective of the Zhuang family, though she might be acting. But she was certainly on the side of Li Quan and Lord Chunshen regarding Zhuang Baoyi's restoration; otherwise, she wouldn't be at the Dianwang Palace at this moment. This morning, when she instructed Li Yuan to bring the entire Zhuang family into the palace, she must have already received news of Li Ling's arrival in Shouchun.

Li Yuan sighed and said dejectedly, "If I had to say it, I would have said it long ago. The ancient sages said, 'Those who go against the will of the people will inevitably fail.' Now, Li Ling is colluding with the Yelang people, oppressing the Dian Kingdom, truly harboring the heart of a tiger and wolf. It's laughable that some people turn a blind eye and wholeheartedly support this, causing the other vassal states to harbor thoughts of separation. Just look at how everyone rushed to visit the Dian crown prince after he arrived in Shouchun; that's enough to know the will of the people. My statement that the Empress Dowager was instigated by villains and that Chu was on the verge of collapse was not an exaggeration. If the southwestern bulwark is completely destroyed, the Western Qin army can advance unimpeded, reaching the walls of Shouchun in less than a month. By then, it will be too late to appease the vassal states."

Xiang Shaolong began to realize that Li Yuan wasn't entirely without sincerity regarding the Zhuang family's restoration. No matter how utterly wicked Li Yuan was, he was still patriotic and loved his family. To a certain extent, if he were to remain in Shouchun, his fate would be intertwined with Li Yuan's. If Li Yuan were killed, he wouldn't live much longer. This was truly unexpected; even if the contemporary master of prophecy, Zou Yan, told him personally, he wouldn't believe it.

Still kneeling on the ground, Li Quan pleaded with a tearful voice, "Your Majesty, please don't believe these slanderous words. Everything this old minister has done has been in accordance with the late King's dying wishes. Your Majesty, please understand."

In that instant, Xiang Shaolong grasped Li Yanyan's position. She didn't have any particular affection for Li Ling, nor was she especially aligned with Li Quan or Lord Chunshen. Rather, she was following King Xiaolie's dying wish, hoping to use Li Ling to reintegrate the various vassal states back into Chu's territory. Li Yuan, however, saw that this plan was unworkable, and coupled with the internal struggle between the two factions within the Li clan, this had led to the current stalemate.

Xiang Shaolong put himself in her shoes and couldn't help but feel a headache for the choices Li Yanyan had to make. Compared to Li Yuan, Li Yuan was indeed much wiser, at least possessing the courage to resist King Xiaolie's arbitrary orders. Madam Zhuang remained kneeling quietly, her gaze occasionally sweeping over Xiang Shaolong and Li Yuan, perhaps also finding it difficult to decide.

Li Yanyan sighed and said, "Let's discuss this later! I must return to the palace." Li Quan cried out in alarm, "Empress Dowager!"

Xiang Shaolong laughed heartily, "Li Taizhu had better tell that traitor Li Ling that no matter how many troops he brings, I, Wan Ruiguang, swear to take his head." Li Yanyan's body trembled violently, and she stood up. Xiang Shaolong, Li Yuan, and Zhuang Baoyi hurriedly knelt on the ground in accordance with etiquette.

Li Yanyan slowly said, "I did not agree to Li Ling's trip to the capital. Li Quan, order him to stay in the Yelang Prince's residence and not to step out of the gate. If he is killed even under these circumstances, then he can only blame his bad luck." Turning to Li Yuan, she said, "The Grand Uncle of the Imperial Guard has dispatched a regiment of Imperial Guards to guard the Dian Prince's residence for twelve hours a day. Anyone who dares to offend them will be killed without mercy."

Amidst the sounds of the carriage returning to the palace, and escorted by eight palace maids, this most beautiful woman in the Chu region left. Li Quan shot a venomous glare at Li Yuan and Xiang Shaolong before chasing after her. Madam Zhuang personally poured wine for Li Yuan and Xiang Shaolong, and said to Li Yuan with a charming smile, "Only today do I realize who truly cares for my Zhuang family. Let my brother and I offer a toast to the Grand Uncle Tai." Li Yuan raised his cup and said, "If one day I, Li Yuan, can defeat the powerful and treacherous officials in the court, I will ensure that the Crown Prince of Dian can sit securely on the throne. I swear by this cup."

Madam Zhuang's beautiful eyes welled up with tears of gratitude. After finishing her wine, she lowered her head and said, "Grand Uncle Tai is so noble and kind. I would gladly serve you like a cow or a horse." Li Yuan's eyes lit up, and he said with great poise, "Princess Consort Zi , please don't flatter me

." Although Xiang Shaolong was pretending to be Madam Zhuang's brother and thus had to maintain a proper distance, seeing her willingness to let Li Yuan feast to his heart's content, he could only feel displeasure. But he had been with many beautiful women, so he didn't mind this seductive woman. After a small drink, he cast aside all his worries. Madam Zhuang glanced at Xiang Shaolong furtively, a slight smile playing on her lips, and said softly, "Ruiguang, you should stop after one more drink." Turning to Li Yuan, she added, "My little brother here can't stand alcohol, but he never gets red in the face no matter how much he drinks."

Xiang Shaolong was taken aback, secretly praising Madam Zhuang's thoughtfulness; he had applied thick powder to his face, so he wouldn't blush no matter how much he drank. Li Yuan smiled and said, "Princess Consort, please don't blame me for being presumptuous. I wish to have a private conversation with Brother Wan." Xiang Shaolong and Madam Zhuang were both stunned. Madam Zhuang nodded obediently, left the hall, and closed the door behind her.

Li Yuan stared blankly at Xiang Shaolong for a long while before sighing, "Xiang Shaolong! I, Li Yuan, am completely impressed!" Xiang Shaolong was immediately terrified, his hand landing on the hilt of his sword. Li Yuan raised his hands and said, "Brother Xiang, please don't be nervous. If I wanted to deal with you, I wouldn't have come here to drink with you."

Xiang Shaolong, still shaken, smiled bitterly and said, "How did you recognize me?" Li Yuan said, "When I first saw you, Brother Xiang, you looked familiar, but it seemed too impossible. Besides, you've grown a beard, your face shape has changed, and your hair and skin color are all very different from before. Plus, you speak with a Yunnan accent, so I thought it was true that people and things can look alike." He then shook his head and laughed, "Actually, I arrived earlier. I was just peeking at your brilliant performance of turning the tide with one hand. At that time, you not only forgot to cover your voice, but you also revealed your usual demeanor. There's only one like you in the world. Unless I'm blind or deaf, how could I not recognize you?" "Is that Xiang Shaolong?"

Xiang Shaolong asked in surprise, "Brother Li and I are enemies, not friends. Why are you talking so intimately now, like old friends reunited?" Li Yuan leaned forward and said, "My feud with Brother Xiang began with Ji Cai Nu. At that time, I wished I could tear Brother Xiang to pieces, but now the die is cast. Alas!"

Deep pain flashed in Li Yuan's eyes as he sighed, "Things always pass. What's the use of killing Brother Xiang? It would only make Ji Cai Nu hate me for life. If she were to commit suicide for love, I would be even more miserable." For the first time, Xiang Shaolong had witnessed this affectionate side of Li Yuan and was somewhat moved, saying, "I didn't expect Brother Li to have such a magnanimous heart. I have been disrespectful." He hadn't expected that in just two days in Shouchun, he would be recognized by both Guo Xiuer and Li Yuan. It seemed that disguise was not very effective. Fortunately, apart from Tian Dan, Han Chuang, Guo Kai, and a few others, no one else in Shouchun recognized him.

Li Yuanxian, filled with emotion, sighed deeply before saying in a mocking tone, "I wonder if Brother Xiang believes it or not, but even if you walked down the street shouting 'I am Xiang Shaolong,' I guarantee no one would dare lay a finger on you. Everyone knows that the Crown Prince and the Queen Dowager consider you a confidant, and the Qin military reveres you as a god. If they killed you today, the Qin army would march in tomorrow. Brother Xiang, you just don't know it! Right now, only Lü Buwei and Tian Dan dare to touch you." Xiang Shaolong said in a deep voice, "This is precisely what has been weighing on my mind. Brother Li, you are not with Tian..." "Should we form an alliance?"

Li Yuan said fiercely, "Don't call that ungrateful old fox anymore. After arriving in Shouchun, he found that Lord Chunshen's situation was better than mine, so he immediately turned against us and sided with them. He only moved into Lord Chunshen's mansion yesterday and even told him my plan. Luckily, I have someone in Lord Chunshen's mansion, otherwise I wouldn't even know what would have happened to me if I were dead." Xiang Shaolong suddenly realized and laughed, "So that's how it is!"

Li Yuan blushed and said, "Brother Xiang, how did you know that Tian Dan had come here?" There was no point in hiding it from him anymore. Xiang Shaolong told him the whole truth, and Li Yuan kept sighing at his good luck. After understanding the whole story, Li Yuan said solemnly, "It's certainly not easy for Brother Xiang to fully trust me. Brother Xiang should know that my situation is dire. And I also know that both killing Tian Dan and restoring the Dian people's kingdom are extremely difficult for Brother Xiang. But if the two of us join forces, perhaps all these impossible things can be easily resolved."

Xiang Shaolong nodded and said, "Who could refuse such a win-win situation? But I must first clarify one thing: does Brother Li know about Lü Buwei's plot to use you, the people of Chu, to kill Xu Xian?" Li Yuan said, "Of course I know, but how could I, Li Yuan, fall for Lü Buwei's scheme? If Xu Xian were to die at the hands of my people of Chu, and Xu Xian was there to mourn the late king, the consequences would be unimaginable."

In the past, Xiang Shaolong would never have believed Li Yuan's words, but now he understood his position and knew that the one who could command the winds and rains in Shouchun was still Lord Chunshen, not Li Yuan, so he had no reason to doubt him. At this moment, Li Yuan's primary concern was survival, and only then could he talk about seizing power. Just look at the rage shown by Huang Zhan, the seventh son of Lord Chunshen, towards Dongluzi this afternoon, and you can see the rest.

Li Yuan suddenly trembled and exclaimed, "This is bad!" Xiang Shaolong was startled and asked, "What is it?"

Li Yuan's face drained of color, and he slammed his fist on the table in anger, saying, "Lord Chunshen truly doesn't understand the big picture. To curry favor with Tian Dan and Lü Buwei, he has done such a foolish thing." Xiang Shaolong's heart sank. Li Yuan's face was ashen as he said, "Fifteen days ago, Huang Hu, the sixth son of Lord Chunshen, led three thousand retainers and sailed west. That was the day after we received news that Xu Xian had come to Shouchun. I already had my suspicions then, but I never expected Lord Chunshen to be so senile in his old age, so unaware of the gravity of the situation."

Xiang Shaolong sighed, "In fact, Lord Chunshen and Tian Dan have always been colluding. You may not know that Zhao Mu is actually Lord Chunshen's fifth son. Back then, Xiao Weimou came to Wei at Lord Chunshen's request to kill me." Li Yuan was stunned, realizing that he had been used by Tian Dan. He had been so sincere, even hoping to use the power of the Qi people to deal with Lord Chunshen. Xiang Shaolong extended his hand and said, "This alliance is formed!"

Li Yuan was overjoyed and shook hands with him tightly, saying, "I always trust Brother Xiang." Then, somewhat embarrassed, he added, "But I know that Brother Xiang still doesn't fully trust me. Now I swear to Heaven that if I break this oath, may I be pierced by ten thousand arrows and die."

Xiang Shaolong secretly praised him, because if Li Yuan couldn't win his complete trust, he would have to be wary of him at every turn, and then such cooperation wouldn't be perfect. Thinking about it, it was quite funny. Not long ago, the two of them were like, "You want me dead, I want you dead," but now, forced by circumstances, they had become comrades-in-arms.

Li Yuan's spirits lifted, and he said, "How about we kill Li Ling first and give them a taste of their own medicine?" The two looked at each other and burst into laughter, a feeling of having met their match.

Chapter Four: A Narrow Escape

Xiang Shaolong escorted Li Yuan to the gate of the residence. Over thirty guards had been waiting impatiently. Before mounting, Li Yuan whispered, "Has Yanran arrived?" Xiang Shaolong nodded slightly. After a moment's hesitation, Li Yuan stepped forward and smiled, "I truly envy Brother Xiang."

Xiang Shaolong asked, "Do you wish to see her?" Li Yuan initially showed delight, then shook his head, saying, "Seeing her is as if I haven't seen her. Brother Xiang, please convey my regards to her and tell her that Ji Yanran is the woman I, Li Yuan, respect most." With a laugh, he mounted his horse and led his followers out the gate like a whirlwind.

Xiang Shaolong sighed, shook his head, and returned to the house. He was about to go back to see Ji Yanran and report the matter to her when Madam Zhuang intercepted him halfway. She pulled him into a quiet, empty room and whispered, "What did Li Yuan say to you?" Xiang Shaolong, remembering her infatuated attitude towards Li Yuan earlier, felt a slight anger but calmly replied, "It was all about swords and spears, nothing special."

Madam Zhuang leaned closer to scrutinize his eyes, making him feel uneasy, then smiled sweetly and said softly, "Shaolong is a little jealous. I'm truly pleased." Xiang Shaolong decided to vent his anger, saying, "It's not jealousy, but no man likes to hear a woman say to his face that she's willing to be another man's slave. It's a matter of respect. Can you let go of my hand?"

Madam Zhuang tightened her grip on his arm. She whispered in his ear, her breath hot against his skin, "If I were talking about Xiang Shaolong instead of Li Yuan, then the same thing would apply—you'd become a concubine or a maid. Does Shaolong understand the difference?" Xiang Shaolong scoffed, "Am I so easily fooled? Does Madam dare say she hasn't fallen for Li Yuan?" At this, a thought struck him; he knew he had truly fallen for Madam Zhuang. He was incredibly gentlemanly towards women, rarely scolding or harming them. Even when Shan Meimei and Gui Yan plotted against him, he never sought revenge.

The woman he scolded most was Zhao Ya, but in the end, he forgave her and treated her with the same tenderness. So why was he so angry with Madam Zhuang?

Having suffered greatly in the past, Xiang Shaolong didn't want to be like the men of this era, indulging in numerous women and taking in many concubines. However, this was merely wishful thinking; instead, women constantly threw themselves at him, willingly joining his harem. Humans aren't plants or trees; how could they be without feelings? In addition, he is easily swayed by women, so he has always been cautious and has not easily gotten involved in matters of love and sex. So far, the only woman who has truly made him unable to control his emotions is Qin Qing; he has been quite restrained with others.

But Lady Zhuang's situation was quite different. Regardless of whether she succeeded in restoring her kingdom, she would never become his concubine; this was a matter of status. Lady Zhuang and her son had become the recognized orthodoxy and symbol of the Dian Kingdom. Once Lady Zhuang married, this symbol would be completely destroyed. She could have physical relations with men; in this era, that was perfectly normal. Therefore, even if Xiang Shaolong and Lady Zhuang developed feelings for each other, it was destined to be short-lived. When Zhuang Baoyi ascended the throne and Xiang Shaolong left, this relationship would come to an end.

It was precisely because this psychological barrier was gone, and because Xiang Shaolong felt immense pity for the isolated mother and son, that he gradually accepted Lady Zhuang unconsciously—perhaps this is what is called developing feelings over time. He himself didn't even realize it until now, in a fit of rage, that he suddenly realized what was going on.

Although scolded, Madam Zhuang showed no remorse. Instead, she said calmly, "You're right. Li Yuan is indeed a man who has captured my heart, and regardless of his true intentions, he outwardly supports my Zhuang family. If I hadn't met you, I would have repaid him with my body. But I won't do that now, because I'm afraid you'll look down on him. Are you satisfied with this open confession?" Xiang Shaolong sighed and said, "But now that you've aroused Li Yuan's lust, I'm afraid things aren't entirely under your control."

Madam Zhuang said, "Don't worry! I'm very experienced in dealing with men." Then she smiled seductively. "I did it on purpose just now, to see how someone as hard-hearted as you would react. Now I finally know! Sigh! Shaolong! How about I serve you tonight?"

At this moment, Xiang Shaolong was somewhat flustered. Remembering the formidable enemy at hand, if he had an intimate relationship with her, he would surely be seen through by those old foxes like Tian Dan and Lord Chunshen. He used all his self-control to harden his heart and said, "Don't forget our earlier agreement. Important matters come first, and matters of the heart must be put aside for now." Lady Zhuang was so moved that her eyes reddened. She lowered her head and said, "This is the first time I have met a man who is not helping me because of my looks." As she spoke, she leaned even closer to him.

Only then did Xiang Shaolong tell her that his identity had been exposed and that he had allied with Li Yuan. Madam Zhuang was stunned and overjoyed. She sealed Xiang Shaolong's lips with hers, kissing him passionately, her body rubbing against his. Her full, rounded breasts aroused Xiang Shaolong's lust, and her hands unceremoniously grasped his penis through his trousers. Xiang Shaolong, not to be outdone, cupped and squeezed her buttocks. After a passionate and fiery embrace, Madam Zhuang finally let him leave. Xiang Shaolong returned to his residence and recounted the events to Ji and Zhao, who were equally stunned, never expecting such an unexpected turn of events.

Ji Yanran readily agreed, saying, "Although Li Yuan is a selfish, narrow-minded, and unscrupulous person, he is ultimately a man of insight. Under these circumstances, forming an alliance with you is the wisest course of action. Moreover, having you as a friend might influence Qin not to prioritize Chu as its first target." Xiang Shaolong smiled wryly, "It's difficult for me to comment on this matter. If you don't attack, they'll attack you. Don't think friends can become enemies; even fathers and sons, brothers, can turn against each other. Miss Ji, you are well-versed in history; you should be able to understand this..." "I've gained some insights,"

Zhao Zhi nodded. "My husband is right. Besides, Xiang Lang has friends everywhere now, and it's hard to know which country to help." Xiang Shaolong frankly said, "I'm a person who only loves peace and dislikes war. If the crown prince ascends the throne in the future, we'll go far away to find a beautiful wilderness or secluded valley to live out our days. Wouldn't that be wonderful?"

The two women were moved and threw themselves into his arms. Xiang Shaolong took the opportunity to take advantage of them, intending to let them quell the burning desire that had been ignited in him by Lady Zhuang. Under his vigorous assault, the two women were already lying on their backs, barely clothed. At this moment, Jing Shan came to report that Qu Shiming, the official of the inner city, was requesting an audience. Xiang Shaolong was greatly surprised. He asked Ji Yanran and learned that the official of the inner city was equivalent to the commander of the imperial guards. He quickly dressed and went out to the front hall to meet the guest with a belly full of suspicion.

Qu Shiming was around thirty years old, with a composed demeanor, a amiable face, and a tall, handsome appearance, giving a very good impression. However, this was merely a facade, because Xiang Shaolong always felt that there was something else in Qu Shiming's eyes that was completely opposite to his outward appearance, making him intuitively feel that Qu Shiming was the kind of person who hid a knife behind a smile.

After exchanging pleasantries, Qu Shiming said, "The Empress Dowager has ordered me to come and invite General Wan to the palace. General Wan, would you be willing to set off immediately?" Xiang Shaolong thought to himself that it was broad daylight, and the route to the palace was along a main road, so he shouldn't be afraid that Qu Shiming would try anything funny. Besides, if trouble broke out, he could escape on the bustling main road. He nodded in agreement and followed Qu Shiming on horseback to the palace.

Along the way, Qu Shiming pointed out the scenery and buildings and chatted, allowing Xiang Shaolong to obtain a lot of information. At least he knew that a magnificent group of buildings next to the palace was the residence of Lord Chunshen, and the Left Prime Minister's residence in Li Garden was diagonally opposite the residence of Lord Chunshen. Li Yuan had residences both inside and outside the palace, and his relationship with Li Yanyan was naturally closer than that of other members of the Li clan or Lord Chunshen. No wonder he had aroused Lord Chunshen's jealousy, but so far he had been unable to do anything about it. However, with Li Ling's entry into Shouchun, Tian Dan and Lord Chunshen openly colluded, and this balance was finally broken.

After entering the palace, everyone dismounted. Qu Shiming whispered, "The Empress Dowager wants to see General Wan at the Yangxin Villa in her East Palace. That's where she plays the zither for her own enjoyment. When she's in a good mood, she might play a piece for him." Xiang Shaolong wondered if Li Yanyan had really taken a liking to him, but then thought it unlikely. How could a woman who hated men change her mind in just two days? But thinking about it was useless, so he could only follow Qu Shiming.

Eight guards led the way, while sixteen others protected him from behind. The protection they gave him was a bit excessive, but it showed how protective Li Yanyan was of him. These twenty-four guards were clearly elite, each a burly, strong man with thick necks and broad shoulders. If all the Chu soldiers were of this caliber, even the Qin soldiers would be no match for them.

At this moment, Xiang Shaolong and Qu Shiming, escorted by their families, walked along a gravel path through the Xia Dong Garden. The garden was surrounded by lush flowers and trees, pavilions, bridges, streams, and fishponds, adding to its vibrant atmosphere. To the left, beyond the trees and grass, stood a row of houses, but no one seemed to be inside. The surroundings were quiet and deserted. Qu Shiming pointed to the houses and said, "General Wan, please look!" Xiang Shaolong followed his gaze and asked curiously, "What are you looking at?"

Just then, he felt a sharp, hard object pierce his right waist with a clanging sound. Xiang Shaolong immediately knew what had happened. Qu Shiming had ambushed him with a dagger, but it had struck a needle pouch filled with flying needles hidden in his waistband. Without thinking, Xiang Shaolong struck Qu Shiming in the ribs with his elbow. Qu Shiming dropped his dagger, his ribs snapping as he collapsed to the side, still shouting, "Attack!"

Xiang Shaolong struck first, his Bloodwave Blade, now scabbed over to conceal its true nature, flashing forth. The two closest men above him were instantly slashed in the neck, blood splattering as they fell. Knowing he couldn't fight head-on, Xiang Shaolong dove into a clump of bushes, rolling out again as the enemy's offensive was in full swing. Two men charged from each side, fearless and ferocious.

Knowing he couldn't retreat, Xiang Shaolong summoned an unyielding fighting spirit, charging forward, trampling countless flowers in his path, but avoiding being surrounded. Then, he suddenly spun, unleashing a lightning-fast Bloodwave Blade. These guards were indeed among the best of the best; the first man to be struck parried the fierce blow, but couldn't dodge Xiang Shaolong's swift kick from below, which struck his groin, causing him to scream and fall to the ground. Two men rushing from behind lost their footing and nearly fell to the ground.

Xiang Shaolong's sword flashed, spinning once, and both men fell backward, dead on the spot. At this moment, more people swarmed in from the front three directions, emerging from the bushes and trees. However, no one shouted; they attacked silently. Xiang Shaolong's heart skipped a beat. He shouted loudly and ran wildly towards the houses on the left.

As he ran onto a small bridge, he heard a whooshing sound behind him. Xiang Shaolong knew something was wrong and rolled onto the bridge. A long sword pierced the air above him. Xiang Shaolong leaped up on the bridge, using offense as defense, creating waves of sword energy, and swiftly counterattacked the two men rushing towards him. With a "clang!", the long sword of the man on the left was reduced to half. Unfortunately, Xiang Shaolong didn't have a chance to kill him. While chasing after the other man, he saw seven or eight enemies crossing the stream under the bridge, trying to intercept him on the other side.

Xiang Shaolong let the enemies go, jumped onto the bridge railing, and then did a somersault in mid-air, landing on a patch of grass. Two enemies immediately pounced on him menacingly. Xiang Shaolong inwardly groaned; these people were all highly skilled in martial arts, and outnumbered, they could easily kill him. If he were to fight them, he would surely perish. Gritting his teeth, he rolled across the ground.

The two enemies, though brave and fierce, had never seen such a fighting style before. In their panic, one of them had his legs entangled by Xiang Shaolong and fell to the ground, while the other was plunged into the abdomen by a wave of blood. Figures and sword flashes filled the air from all sides. Xiang Shaolong released the fallen man and rolled towards a large tree, only bouncing up after hitting the trunk. Three longswords came slashing at him from different angles.

Xiang Shaolong knew this was a critical moment; if he couldn't break through the encirclement, he would surely die. With a loud shout, he unleashed his trump card, a combined offensive and defensive technique. All three swords struck the sword light he had drawn, and were pushed back by his seemingly endless sword momentum. Glancing out of the corner of his eye, he saw the others chasing after him like madmen, forming an encirclement.

Xiang Shaolong looked up and saw a horizontal branch extending upwards, with denser foliage above. Overjoyed, before the enemy could attack, he sheathed his sword, leaped into the air, and grabbed the thick branch, as thick as a child's arm. The enemy, seeing this, leaped up and swung their swords. Xiang Shaolong's legs flew out to the left and right, sweeping the blades of both men's swords away. He then unleashed a series of kicks, striking both men in the face, blood spurting as they staggered and fell. Using his waist strength, he flipped onto the branch, finding himself surrounded by enemies below.

Three swords flew at him. Xiang Shaolong clung to the tree trunk, dodging the longswords, and swiftly climbed upwards. The enemy, thrown into disarray, watched helplessly from below, now only regretting not having brought their crossbows. Reaching the top of the tree, he was eight or nine zhang (approximately 33-40 meters) above the ground. Xiang Shaolong was overjoyed and shouted at the top of his lungs like a sentry on a watchtower, "Rebellion! Rebellion!"

Four enemies began to climb up the tree. Xiang Shaolong was not alarmed but delighted. He drew his sword, Blood Wave, and went to meet them. With his superior position, he chopped the four men down from the tree with ease, and they were all dead. At this moment, Qu Shiming, clutching his broken ribs, struggled to the foot of the tree, also helpless and at a loss. He shouted, "Chop down the tree!" Xiang Shaolong laughed loudly, "You've worked hard!" To cut down a tree that a man couldn't wrap his arms around with a longsword would take at least half an hour.

Just then, countless imperial guards poured into the garden from all directions. Qu Shiming's face changed drastically, and he shouted, "Go!" But it was too late. The guards surrounded the man and the tree. When they saw that it was their superior, Qu Shiming, they were all stunned.

"The Empress Dowager has arrived!" The guards hurriedly knelt on the ground. At the top of the tree, Xiang Shaolong, unable to perform the proper greeting, naturally refrained from doing so. He had finally escaped the danger of assassination, relying solely on luck.

Chapter Five: His whereabouts Revealed Again in

the Empress Dowager's Palace. Qu Shiming and seventeen of his men who had ambushed Xiang Shaolong were bound hand and foot, kneeling beneath Li Yanyan's palace. Five of them bore varying degrees of sword wounds, their bodies covered in blood, their appearances pitiful. Including Qu Shiming, Xiang Shaolong had killed seven of the twenty-five assassins. Li Quan and ministers who were on official business in the palace rushed to the scene upon hearing the news. Two of them were General Dou Jie and Grand Master Cheng Suning. Dou Jie had originally been loyal to Li Yuan, but later, seeing Lord Chunshen's growing power, he switched allegiance to Lord Chunshen and Li Quan. Cheng Suning, on the other hand, had always been Li Quan's henchman. It was he who had sent his nephew Cheng Zhe and his retainers, disguised as boatmen, to murder Lady Zhuang and her son on the Huai River.

Dou Jie and Cheng Suning, both nearing forty, were imposing figures, exuding the air of great generals. The latter, tall, thin, and pale, was clearly a man addicted to wine and women. Also present were Wu Zhan, the outer city guard, and Lian Anting, the chief of the imperial guards responsible for protecting the Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince. Xiang Shaolong stood leisurely to Li Quan's left, followed by Wu Zhan and Lian Anting. Opposite them were Dou Jie and Cheng Suning.

Qu Shiming's face was ashen, his head bowed in silence. Li Yanyan wore a phoenix crown, but her face was not covered by a heavy veil. Her stunningly beautiful face was covered with a layer of frost, and her phoenix eyes were filled with power as she asked, "What is going on? Who is behind this?" Qu Shiming lowered his head and said, "After Wan Ruiguang came to Shouchun, he acted recklessly and disregarded our Great Chu as if no one existed. Today, he offended the Empress Dowager at the Dianwang Mansion and even openly threatened to kill. I was filled with resentment and wanted to teach him a lesson. There was absolutely no one instigating him behind the scenes."

Li Yuan's voice rang out from the entrance, and he laughed loudly, "How reckless is Wan Ruiguang? If your home, Qu Shiming, were occupied, what would you do?" Everyone's eyes turned to the entrance, where they saw Li Yuan striding in with a bright and cheerful expression. He first bowed to Li Yanyan before going to Xiang Shaolong's side, clearly standing on the same side as him. Li Quan sneered, "Prime Minister, you're mistaken. How can these two matters be compared? When Li Lingyin occupied the Dian King's residence, the late King was still alive and did not object. Clearly..."

Li Yanyan interrupted him coldly, "Grand Sacrificer!" Li Quan glared at Li Yuan and Xiang Shaolong, grunted, and didn't continue. But everyone knew he was referring to Li Chuangwen's forceful occupation of the Dian King's residence, which had the consent and tacit approval of the deceased King Xiaolie. Dou Jie coughed and said, "Qu Shiming, without the Empress Dowager's knowledge, committed a crime in the palace, which is indeed a violation of military discipline. However, he acted out of righteous indignation, so it is still understandable. I hope the Empress Dowager will punish him leniently." He was a high-ranking military official of Chu, and even the Empress Dowager Li Yanyan had to consider his words. This shows that Lord Chunshen's current strength was overwhelmingly superior.

Cheng Suning also pleaded, "Qu Shiming only wanted to dampen General Wan's spirits; he had no intention of killing. Your Majesty, please understand." Xiang Shaolong laughed, "This is truly strange. None of you were present at the time, yet you can all insist that General Qu only wanted to teach me a lesson. Did you all plan this beforehand?"

Cheng Suning was speechless, her eyes flashing with resentment as she glared at Xiang Shaolong. The Imperial Guard Commander, Lian Anting, bowed and said, "Your Majesty, when I led my men to the East Garden, Lord Qu and his men were all armed with sharp weapons. This was not a simple brawl. The seven dead men were scattered throughout the garden, clearly indicating a fierce fight and chase." Li Quan sneered, "Is this exactly what the Imperial Guard Commander wanted?"

Lian Anting, clearly possessing great composure, remained unmoved despite Li Quan's blatant accusation that he coveted the inner city guard position, which was one rank higher than his own. He replied, "Lord Li, you flatter me. This humble general only ..." "We must report the truth to the Empress Dowager. If we deliberately conceal it, it would be a dereliction of duty." Li Yuan laughed, "Deliberately distorting the facts is not only a dereliction of duty, but also a crime of deceiving the emperor. Li Taizhu, don't get too carried away."

Li Quan angrily said, "Left Prime Minister..." Li Yanyan interrupted him and asked Wu Zhan, the outer city guard who had not yet spoken, "General Wu, what is your opinion on this matter?"

Wu Zhan controlled the city guards and had great power. His status was the same as Dou Jie's. His stance was always impartial, so his words were particularly influential. With a fierce glint in his eyes, like a lion's, Wu Zhan's piercing gaze fell upon Qu Shiming. He said in a deep voice, "Within the palace, reckless use of swords is a grave crime, let alone murder, which is unforgivable. However, since Lord Qu insists it was merely a disturbance, we should investigate thoroughly. If the Empress Dowager takes all the perpetrators away and interrogates them individually, the truth will surely come to light."

Li Quan, Dou Jie, and the others immediately paled. They hadn't expected Wu Zhan to show them no mercy. If he exposed them as the masterminds behind the scenes, things would be even worse. At this moment, the gatekeeper announced, "Lord Chunshen has arrived!" Lord Chunshen, flanked by two generals, one of whom was none other than his seventh son, Huang Zhan, stormed into the hall. While bowing, Li Yuan whispered to Xiang Shaolong that the other general was Lord Chunshen's third son, Huang Ba.

When Lord Chunshen arrived at the head of the table, to everyone's surprise, he pointed his halberd and berated Qu Shiming, saying, "Qu Shiming, as the inner city guard, responsible for the security of the Forbidden City, you have knowingly broken the law. Do you know your crime?" Xiang Shaolong and Li Yuan exchanged a glance, both knowing that Lord Chunshen was going to report them to the authorities to silence them. Qu Shiming thought that Lord Chunshen was trying to exonerate him in another way, and hurriedly said, "This humble general knows his crime!"

Lord Chunshen turned to Li Yanyan and said, "This old minister requests the Empress Dowager to immediately issue an edict to behead all the offenders." Qu Shiming was terrified and exclaimed in astonishment, "Your Majesty! This matter..."

Huang Zhan, who was behind Lord Chunshen, rushed out and kicked Qu Shiming in the mouth. The latter's teeth shattered and his lips burst open. He screamed in agony, rolled on the ground, and could no longer speak. Lord Chunshen turned and glared at Qu Shimin, who was groaning in pain on the ground, and said disdainfully, "He has committed a capital crime and still dares to insult the Empress Dowager. He deserves to die ten thousand times over." With these few words, he dismissed the matter of silencing Huang Zhan.

Li Yanyan looked coldly at Lord Chunshen, and after a while, she sighed and said, "Guards! Take these people out of the palace and hang them immediately. The head of the Imperial Guards will supervise the execution." Lian Anting knelt down to receive the decree and ordered the Imperial Guards to take Qu Shimin and the others away. Li Quan and the others were all pale, but they knew that this was the most advantageous solution for them.

Li Yanyan's beautiful eyes swept over the crowd, pausing briefly when her gaze landed on Xiang Shaolong. A complex, enigmatic expression flashed across her face before she finally approached Wu Zhan and softly asked, "General Wu, who do you think should be appointed as the Inner City Guard?" Xiang Shaolong held a great liking for the fierce general Wu Zhan and was eager to hear his suggestion. Lord Chunshen and the others all wore wary expressions, demonstrating the crucial influence this Inner City Guard position held on the struggle between the two factions. Li Yuan, on the other hand, remained composed, a smile playing on his lips.

Wu Zhan solemnly said, "Shouchun is currently in a turbulent period, and even the palace is not spared. I believe it is not advisable to make drastic changes. Therefore, I propose promoting Lord Lian by one rank, and appointing the Deputy Commander of the Imperial Guard as the new Commander. What does Your Majesty think of this?" Before Lord Chunshen and others could object, Li Yanyan spoke first, "General Wu's suggestion is very much in line with my wishes. It is decided here, and no one else may object." She then added, "General Wan, are you being presumptuous? Please stay, leave the court!"

Li Yanyan received Xiang Shaolong alone in the rear court. After the guards and maids were dismissed, the beautiful Empress Dowager revealed a rare smile and said to Xiang Shaolong, who sat below her, "General Wan should be much more famous than he is now." Xiang Shaolong felt a chill in his heart, but feigned ignorance, asking, "Why does Your Majesty say this?"

Li Yanyan... Yan Yan glared at him and said, "The ones who tried to assassinate you were all outstanding members of the Imperial Guards, each capable of taking on ten men. Yet, despite the deliberate ambush, General Wan still managed to kill seven of them, while you, sir, were unharmed. This reminds me of someone." Xiang Shaolong felt a chill run down his spine and asked, "Did the Empress Dowager think of that person?"

Li Yan Yan changed the subject, saying, "This morning, after meeting with the General, I went to see Lady Xiu'er embroidering. She seemed distracted and made several mistakes, even pricking her finger. I asked the servants and learned that the General had met with Xiu'er when he left the palace, and she had arranged for a carriage to take him away. At the time, I didn't think much of it, but after seeing the General's later behavior at the Prince of Dian's residence and in the palace, my thoughts changed." Xiang Shaolong inwardly cursed, realizing that she had become suspicious of him.

Li Yanyan's beautiful eyes lit up, and she stared at him fiercely, saying, "In this world, there is only one man who can make Xiuer lose her mind at first sight. General Wan, can you tell me who that man is?" Xiang Shaolong knew that his identity had been exposed. Guo Xiuer was Li Yanyan's close friend, and she must have told her about him from time to time. Therefore, Li Yanyan noticed her strange expression, and his unusually secretive behavior and impressive skills finally led this beautiful woman to guess that he was Xiang Shaolong. His disguise this time was a complete disaster, a total failure. Fortunately, Tian Dan did not know that he was here. And since Li Yanyan had dismissed the others before forcing him to reveal his identity, there should still be room for maneuver.

After sighing, he regained his usual composure and said calmly, "Did she tell you the story of 'A Drop of Honey'?" Li Yanyan nodded slightly, then her jade-like face turned cold. "Xiang Shaolong! How dare you! Are you here on the orders of the Qin people to bewitch the various states of my Great Chu?"

Xiang Shaolong smiled bitterly, "How could I, Xiang Shaolong, be such a despicable person? I would never stoop to such a thing. Want to settle this on the battlefield? I came here to kill Tian Dan. Now that the Empress Dowager has exposed my identity, I have no choice but to return to Qin. My only request is that I lead the widow of Dian Kingdom to safety.

" Yan Yan said coldly, "Is it so easy to leave?" Xiang Shaolong looked at her with a smile, first feasting his eyes on her beauty, before calmly saying, "Kill me or torture me, it's all up to you. But if I am killed, coupled with Lord Chunshen's attempt to assassinate Xu Xian, even with Lü Buwei, it will be difficult to stop the Qin army from pressing in."

Li Yan Yan was furious and said, "This is really too much! Do you think my Great Chu is really afraid of your Qin? Qin is currently in the midst of a peasant uprising in Dongjun and is too busy to take care of itself. How dare they come to bully my Great Chu?" These words were tough on the outside but soft on the inside. Anyone with eyes could see that she was afraid. This was understandable, since everyone was terrified of Qin these days. Xiang Shaolong smiled and said, "Qin is currently preoccupied with its own problems, but what is the Dongjun uprising? The army will quell the chaos, and the medicine will cure the disease. On the contrary, because of the Dian Kingdom, the feudal lords of Chu are thinking of change, and the people's hearts are turning to chaos. Qin may not have the strength to destroy Chu now, but as long as it forces

the Empress Dowager to move the capital again, the consequences will be self-evident." After the two stared at each other for a moment, Li Yanyan said coldly, "You just said that Lord Chunshen sent people to attack Xu Xian's delegation. What exactly happened?" Xiang Shaolong was secretly delighted, knowing that things had taken a turn for the better. He said in a deep voice, "This is actually a huge conspiracy by Tian Dan and Lü Buwei to overthrow Chu. Lord Chunshen thought that killing Xu Xian would please Lü Buwei, but little did he know that he had fallen into a trap." He then told the whole story, especially emphasizing that Lü Buwei and Tian Dan were in cahoots. They first instigated Li Yuan, and when he was unmoved, they abandoned Li Yuan and took Lord Chunshen instead. He then recounted in detail his encounter with Madam Zhuang in the Qinling Mountains, and how Cheng Qi had disguised himself as a boatman to plot against him.

Li Yanyan's beautiful eyes widened repeatedly, her jade-like face flickering between light and shadow, clearly showing her extreme shock. Finally, Xiang Shaolong said, "Your Majesty should now know that I have no ill intentions towards Great Chu." Li Yanyan said with distress, "Why was Lord Chunshen so foolish as to attack the Qin delegation that came to offer condolences? I must stop him."

Xiang Shaolong said, "If I could have stopped him, I would have done so long ago. Xu Xian is a key figure in the Qin military. If something happens to him, and Lü Buwei reveals that it was Lord Chunshen who did it, the only way to appease the Qin military's anger is to offer Lord Chunshen's head. Then I might be able to exonerate Great Chu." Li Yanyan said in astonishment, "How can I do that? Alas! Even though I am the Empress Dowager, I still do not have the power to behead Lord Chunshen so easily."

Xiang Shaolong knew that she was already tempted, and said in a low voice, "As long as Your Majesty does not object, that's fine. I will work with the Grand Uncle to find a way." Li Yanyan was stunned and asked, "Does the Grand Uncle know that you are Xiang Shaolong?" Xiang Shaolong nodded.

Li Yanyan was clearly well aware of their past, and said in a deep voice, "Didn't he have a grudge against you for stealing your love?" Xiang Shaolong replied, "Brother Li, you now only have one choice between Chu being embroiled in internal strife, the Qin army invading, and killing me. Brother Li is ultimately a patriot who loves his family and country, so naturally you have chosen to cooperate with me!"

After pondering for a moment, Li Yanyan showed a weary expression and said in a delicate and charming voice, "General Wan, please step back. Let me think about it carefully." Her weak demeanor made Xiang Shaolong's heart flutter, and he quickly suppressed his wicked thoughts and withdrew.

As soon as he stepped out of the palace gate, he was invited by Li Yuan to his villa in the palace to talk. After Xiang Shaolong revealed that Li Yanyan had seen through him, Li Yuan exclaimed with delight, "This is wonderful! If my little sister is on our side, our chances of winning will greatly increase!" Xiang Shaolong deliberately tested his sincerity, saying, "The Empress Dowager seems to have a very special attitude towards Brother Li and Lord Chunshen. Is there something else going on?"

Li Yuan paused for a moment, then sighed deeply, revealing a pained expression, and said, "Although Brother Xiang has always been my deepest enemy, both Tian Dan and I greatly admire you, and are even proud to have you as an opponent. If someone else had asked me this, I would have just given a vague answer, but now I don't want to lie to you, and I believe that Brother Xiang will keep this a secret for my Li family." Xiang Shaolong's heart sank, knowing that his guess was correct; Li Yanyan was indeed involved in something immoral.

Li Yuan remained silent for a long while before slowly saying, "When Yan Yan was fourteen, she was already very beautiful. My parents and I, as her elder brother, cherished her like a precious jewel. We never imagined that not only outsiders would covet her beauty, but even within the clan, there were people with such wolfish ambitions." Xiang Shaolong was greatly astonished. It seemed he had guessed wrong about the relationship between Li Yuan and Li Yan Yan; the incestuous person was someone else. But why was Li Yan Yan's attitude towards Li Yuan so strange?

Li Yuan said, "I don't want to go into the details anymore. It happened when Yan Yan was sixteen. This beastly person was Li Quan, and Li Ling was also involved. At that time, Li Quan was the most powerful in the Li clan, and we dared not speak out. My parents died with resentment because of this. Yan Yan changed completely; she refused to have any contact with men, hiding at home all day, only willing to see me, showing an unusual attachment." Xiang Shaolong asked in great surprise, "If that's the case, she should have wanted to kill Li Quan, so why does she still dote on him so much?"

Li Yuan said painfully, "Because she hates me too!" Xiang Shaolong stared at him in astonishment. Li Yuan slammed his hand on the table, his eyes blazing with hatred, and gritted his teeth, saying, "From that moment on, I decided to kill Li Quan and Li Ling by any means necessary. When Yan Yan turned twenty, that beast Li Quan openly came to demand her away time and again. I was forced into a corner by him, so I came up with a plan: to send Yan Yan to Lord Chunshen. If she became pregnant, Lord Chunshen would then give her to the King. Brother Xiang, you should understand what I mean! Only in this way will Li Quan dare not touch Yan Yan, and I can gain Lord Chunshen's favor and possibly become the King's brother-in-law."

Xiang Shaolong stared blankly at Li Yuan, never expecting the process to be so complicated. Truly, every family has its own troubles. At the same time, it can be seen that among the various states, not only are the Chu families the most powerful, but they are also the most licentious. Li Yuan said, "I spent ten days painstakingly explaining the pros and cons before I finally persuaded Yan Yan. The main reason she agreed was for the sake of the Chu Kingdom, because if the King had no son, chaos would immediately ensue after his death. But she had one condition: the child's father must be me; she would only bear a child for me."

Xiang Shaolong exclaimed, "What?" Li Yuan's handsome eyes reddened, his expression somber, and he slowly said, "I pretended to agree to her, but when it came time to carry out the plan, I replaced her with a retainer of similar build to me. Unfortunately, even the best-laid plans can go awry, and she discovered it afterward. In her fury, she..." She killed him with her protective dagger. The next day, she followed me to Lord Chunshen's residence without a word, and never spoke to me again until she became Empress Dowager, after which she treated me a little better. She deliberately favored Li Quan in order to hurt me, and now I fully understand her unbalanced mentality. That's why I was so happy when I learned that she treated you differently, hoping that she could return to normal."

Xiang Shaolong finally understood why Li Yuan and Li Quan, who were from the same clan, would turn against each other, and why Li Quan could be so arrogant and spoiled. There was such a strange and perverse relationship between them. After taking a deep breath, he said, "Li Quan is now with the Empress Dowager, hey! Is there anyone else...?" Li Yuan shook his head and said, "Absolutely not. Since that incident, Yan Yan has developed a deep hatred for men and only speaks to me. But later, she captivated Lord Chunshen and the King, leaving them both infatuated. Even I am baffled as to why she can tolerate them."

Xiang Shaolong said, "She did it for you. Only in this way can you avoid being killed by Li Quan." Li Yuan shuddered violently, grabbed Xiang Shaolong's hand, and gasped, "Is that really so?"

Xiang Shaolong said, "It really is so. She was willing to serve two men so readily, all for revenge. But she knows that you are still not..." "Lord Chunshen is an adversary of Li Quan, which is why she deliberately favors Li Quan while neglecting you. The fact that she allowed you to stay in the palace suggests she intends to protect you." Li Yuan asked, "Then why didn't she explain Zhu Chu to me?"

Xiang Shaolong replied, "Because she still truly hates you. I discovered this subtle situation when I was peeking at you from behind the screen that day." Li Yuan felt much better after explaining, nodding and saying, "Brother Xiang's words make perfect sense. Now you should understand my sincerity in cooperating. As long as I can kill Lord Chunshen, Li Quan, and Li Ling, nothing else matters to me."

Even Xiang Shaolong now wanted to kill those two beasts, Li Quan and Li Ling. "Who exactly controls the military in Shouchun now?" Xiang Shaolong asked. Li Yuan calmly replied, "Shouchun's army is mainly divided into the outer city army, the inner city army, and the outer defense army. Originally, the inner city army and the outer defense army were controlled by Lord Chunshen and Li Quan, but Qu Shiming is dead, and the inner city army is now under the command of Jian Anting. Du Gui has been promoted to the position of Imperial Guard Commander. Both of them are my men, so the inner city army is firmly under my control. I didn't expect Wu Zhan to be so helpful."

Xiang Shaolong asked, "Whose side is Wu Zhan originally on?" Li Yuan replied, "Wu Zhan is only loyal to the Crown Prince and Yan Yan. If it weren't for him holding the fort, my sister would have fallen under the control of Lord Chunshen and Li Quan long ago, and even I wouldn't be able to protect her. The inner city army numbers around ten thousand. I will replace all of Qu Shiming's remaining supporters." "Only by protecting my sister and the Crown Prince can I have the leverage to deal with them."

He paused and continued, "The outer city army numbers 30,000, responsible for the defense of Shouchun and the four surrounding cities. The commander of the outer army is the ungrateful Dou Jie. I strongly recommended him for this important position back then, but after I returned from Hanxing, he sided with Lord Chunshen and Li Quan. The outer army is responsible for the defense of both land and water and the construction of the Great Wall, numbering 50,000, and is the most powerful. Otherwise, I would have killed Li Quan long ago."

Xiang Shaolong asked, "What about the personal strength of Lord Chunshen and Li Quan?" Li Yuan replied, "Li Quan is not a threat at all, but Lord Chunshen's three sons, Huang Zhan, Huang Hu, and Huang Ba, are all fierce and invincible generals. In addition, with 5,000 retainers, no one in Shouchun has more power than him." "It's much bigger now. I only have two thousand retainers, which is far inferior to theirs."

Xiang Shaolong said, "Now Huang Hu has taken three thousand men to assassinate Xu Xian, greatly reducing our strength. So we should wait a few days before making a move. Otherwise, if Huang Hu returns, Lord Chunshen will definitely deal with us immediately." Li Yuan sighed and said, "I also thought of this, but as soon as the King of Yelang and Li Ling arrived, the whole situation changed immediately. They brought nearly two thousand men, many of whom are experts. If it weren't for the guards at the Dian King's mansion, and Lord Chunshen's current wariness of my sister, Li Ling would have already led his men to attack the Zi King's mansion. Brother Xiang, you must also be careful."

Xiang Shaolong felt a headache coming on and asked, "Is there any way to win over Wu Zhan?" Li Yuan said, "Let's not even talk about the fact that it's almost impossible." "It's possible. If Wu Zhan really sides with us, the covert struggle will turn into an open war, which will be harmful to us. So the best way is to use swift and decisive measures to eliminate Lord Chunshen, Li Quan, Li Ling, Dou Jie, and others all at once, and then have my sister clean up the mess. It's just a pity that we don't have enough power to do this right now."

Xiang Shaolong patted him on the shoulder and said, "Strike first, then be controlled. Brother Li, do you have a way to get me a map of the Yelang King's Palace? If it's feasible, I'll kill Li Ling tonight to avoid any unforeseen complications." Li Yuan patted his

chest and said, "That's easy. Brother Xiang, go back to the Dian King's Palace first, and I'll come to find you later!"

As the two stepped out of the side door, they happened to run into Guo Xiuer, and all three of them were taken aback. Li Yuan was unaware that Guo Xiuer had seen through Xiang Shaolong's identity and smiled, "Xiuer, come and pay your respects to General Wan Ruiguang. He is the younger brother of the Dian King's wife." Guo Xiuer did not dare to look at Xiang Shaolong and bowed her head gracefully. Overwhelmed with emotion, Xiang Shaolong exchanged a few polite words before being escorted back to the Dian King's residence by Li Yuan's men. Throughout the journey, Guo Xiuer's beautiful face kept flashing through his mind; he hadn't expected that after several encounters in Handan, she still couldn't forget him.

Upon arriving in Shouchun, events unfolded completely unexpectedly. His original intention was merely to assassinate Tian Dan and then leave Shouchun for Dian to fulfill his promise to help Lady Zhuang restore her kingdom. However, Guo Xiuer, Li Yuan, and Li Yanyan all discovered his true identity, drawing him deeply into the power struggles of the Chu capital, Shouchun.

He genuinely wanted to help Li Yuan, partly for Guo Xiuer's sake. If Li Yuan fell from power, Guo Xiuer's fate would be tragic. Another reason was a sense of obligation; Li Quan and Li Ling, those beasts, were utterly despicable. As for Lord Chunshen, even setting aside the Dian affair, his act of sending men to deal with Xu Xian was unforgivable.

The problem was that even with Li Yuan's men, they still didn't have the power to deal with Lord Chunshen and Li Quan. The only way was to force Li Yanyan to their side. Only by killing Li Ling and demonstrating their strength could they hope to sway her into a coup. He couldn't believe that Li Yanyan didn't want to avenge the shame and hatred that had changed her character and her life. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been protecting Li Yuan and the Zhuang family at every turn.

Thinking of this, they had already arrived at the Dian King's Mansion. Xiang Shaolong made a sudden decision, deciding to assassinate Li Ling at the Yelang King's Mansion that night, otherwise he might never have the chance.

Chapter Six: A Tragic

Background As soon as he stepped into the mansion, Xing Shan greeted him, saying, "Master Teng has arrived!" Xiang Shaolong was overjoyed and rushed into the inner hall, where Teng Yi was talking to Ji and Zhao. Teng Yi jumped up, his true feelings revealed, and embraced him tightly. After sitting down, Ji Yanran smiled and said, "So we missed Brother Teng, but Danquan and Wuda met Brother Teng in just two days' journey."

Teng Yi said, "We've attacked Dan Chu's army seven times, and we've held them off each time. This man's wisdom and military strategy are not to be underestimated. Now, Pu Bu and Xu Yi are in charge of stalling them. I was worried that my third brother wouldn't have enough men, so I brought three hundred. They'll all be disguised as merchants from Wei territory, entering the city in batches. They're the best men in our elite force." Xiang Shaolong was overjoyed and said, "I was just having a headache over assassinating Li Ling, but now it's all good. Second brother, first select a few dozen men to disguise themselves as former subordinates of the King of Dian, to find their lord and take on the responsibility of protecting the King of Dian's palace."

Teng Yi quickly summoned Jing Shan and the newly arrived Niao Da and Dan Quan to make arrangements. Xiang Shaolong then explained the current situation to Teng Yi. When Teng Yi learned that his sworn enemy, Li Yuan, had become an ally, his eyes widened. When Xiang Shaolong mentioned that Li Yanyan had discovered their identities, Zhao Zhi was so terrified that he clung to Ji Yanran's back.

At this moment, Li Yuan arrived. The three entered the quiet room to discuss the matter. Seeing the arrival of reinforcements, and knowing the formidable strength of the Bird Clan's elite troops—two hundred men being equivalent to several thousand—Li Yuan's spirits soared, and he was filled with confidence. As they unrolled the scroll to discuss their plans, Lord Chunshen sent an invitation, inviting Lady Zhuang, Zhuang Baoyi, and Wan Ruiguang to a banquet at Lord Chunshen's residence. All three frowned deeply.

Li Yuan sent someone back to his residence to check if he was among the invitees, then said, "No good banquet ever happens. How should we handle this?" Xiang Shaolong said, "I'm certain Brother Li is also among the invitees. After today's failed assassination attempt, Lord Chunshen has lost patience, especially since Brother Li's power has surged since Qu Shiming's departure. So he's decided to eliminate both of us in one fell swoop."

Teng Yi laughed, "Then why not turn the tables and kill Lord Chunshen tonight?" Seeing how easily he spoke, Li Yuan smiled bitterly, "But we can't bring hundreds of men to the banquet. If we don't go, it doesn't seem quite right. Even now, on the surface, my relationship with Lord Chunshen is still very good." Xiang

Shaolong said, "We absolutely have to go to this banquet. That's why they didn't expect us to raid the Yelang King's residence. Brother Li, how many of your men can be considered true masters? At least they should be at the level of Yan Fu and Jian Luzi." Li Yuan said, "That's..." "Ten to twelve men can be selected," Xiang Shaolong said. "That's settled then. I'll assign you twelve more men, and we'll each bring twenty-four. Also, Brother Li, order your men to be on high alert inside the mansion. If any signal rockets are launched, immediately rush to Lord Chunshen's mansion and fight them to the death."

Teng Yi asked, "What if Li Linghui sends men to attack the Dianwang Mansion?" Xiang Shaolong replied, "I'm afraid he won't come! Yanran is in charge of the overall situation here. Due to misjudging our strength,..." "The intruders came alive but can't go back."

Teng Yi said, "I'll take care of Li Ling's life. In my opinion, forty-eight people are still a bit weak. It would be best to have ten more to guard the carriages and horses outside. If something happens, they can immediately coordinate from the inside and outside. That would be much safer." He pressed down and patted the guard, laughing, "The folding crossbow I've hidden inside will be a great help in deciding the outcome." At this moment, Lou Wuxin came to report that Li Yuan had indeed received an invitation to the banquet at Lord Chunshen's mansion that night.

After the three discussed the details of the operation, Li Yuan asked about the performance and usage of the "folding crossbow" before going with Teng Yi. Xiang Shaolong went to find Madam Zhuang.

When they arrived at Madam Zhuang's north courtyard, Zhuang Kong greeted them, saying, "Madam Qingxiu has arrived. She is catching up with you in the hall." Before he finished speaking, the sound of jade pendants rang out. Two maids cleared the way, and Madam Zhuang and another beautiful woman walked out of the hall side by side. Because of the veil, he couldn't see Lady Qingxiu's face, but judging from her slender and graceful figure and charming gait, he knew she was a rare beauty. Dou Jie was quite lucky with women; he wondered if he would regret losing this beauty because he had fallen for Cheng Suning's concubine.

Xiang Shaolong and Zhuang Kong quickly stepped aside to bow. Madam Zhuang said, "Madam! This is my younger brother, Wan Ruiguang." Lady Qingxiu glanced at Xiang Shaolong through the veil, bowed, and said, "General Wan, greetings!" Without another word, she was escorted out of the mansion by Madam Zhuang.

After Madam Zhuang returned, she pulled him into the inner hall and closed the door behind her. Her expression was grave as she said, "Madam Qingxiu came to warn me that Lord Chunshen, Li Quan, Dou Jie, Cheng Suning, Li Ling, and the King of Yelang have formed a faction and are preparing to eliminate us and Li Yuan. We must flee immediately." Xiang Shaolong frowned and said, "Didn't she separate from Dou Jie? How could she know about this?"

Madam Zhuang said, "Her niece is Huang Zhan's wife. Huang Zhan is a man of great ambition but little talent. He cursed you and Li Yuan at home, revealing the secret." Xiang Shaolong reached out and embraced the pale-faced Madam Zhuang, laughing, "Even if they don't make a move, I will force them to." He then succinctly explained the current situation between them and the enemy.

Madam Zhuang sighed and said, "So you already knew. Should Baoyi and I go to the banquet tonight?" Xiang Shaolong said, "Of course not. I'll just find an excuse to tell Lord Chunshen. I think he already anticipated you wouldn't go."

Madam Zhuang said worriedly, "Aren't we at a huge disadvantage in terms of numbers?" Xiang Shaolong said, "The numbers are indeed at a huge disadvantage, but in terms of strength, it's a completely different story. My men are all skilled in scaling walls and leaping across rooftops. When the Yelang King's mansion catches fire, I guarantee Lord Chunshen and his men will be at a loss, and then we'll have an opportunity. I've decided to confront Lord Chunshen tonight. If we can kill them both..." "The best outcome would be if Tian Dan were dead."

Lady Zhuang embraced her, saying, "Shaolong! I am truly grateful to you. But what does 'showing our cards on the table' mean?" Xiang Shaolong explained, "I'm afraid that Lord Chunshen's target tonight is only you and your son. In that case, it would be difficult for us to launch an attack. Since we would lack a legitimate reason, we would have to make do and simply kill Li Ling and the King of Yelang." Lady Zhuang chuckled and said, "You make it sound so easy. Li Ling and the King of Yelang are surrounded by skilled fighters. Don't underestimate them! After the deed is done, shouldn't we also show our cards on the table?"

Xiang Shaolong saw that her pair of watery eyes were sparkling and extremely alluring. He leaned in and kissed her lightly, saying softly, "What kind of expert haven't I seen? The most powerful tactic is to attack when the enemy is unprepared. Their attention will surely be focused on Li Yuan's guards. How could they expect me to have a surprise attack? Knowing yourself but not your enemy is a cardinal sin in warfare. Don't worry, Madam. When we have no more worries, we can reveal our trump cards and enjoy them to our hearts' content." Madam Zhuang's face lit up with joy, and she said coquettishly, "With Xiang Shaolong protecting my son and me, what is there to worry about? I'm just concerned about you!"

Seeing her so charming, Xiang Shaolong couldn't help but kiss her passionately again, his hands slipping inside her clothes to enjoy her hot, soft breasts. Only after he was satisfied did he go to prepare everything. No one expected that they would be facing the enemy so soon.

Seventy-two members of the elite troops arrived, all of whom had secretly infiltrated the Dian King's mansion by scaling walls and trees. Ji Yanran was overjoyed to be entrusted with such an important task. She commanded with composure, first gathering Madam Zhuang and the other women and children together, then deploying defenses at various strategic locations within the mansion, leaving no stone unturned, not even the treetops. Zhao Zhi became her natural follower and orderly.

At this time, Lou Wuxin arrived on Li Yuan's orders and reported the situation to Xiang Shaolong: "Now the whole city is filled with spies of Lord Chunshen and Li Quan, closely monitoring the movements at the Prime Minister's residence and the Prince Zi's residence to prevent anyone from escaping. On the other hand, the Prince Yelang's residence is very quiet, with doors closed and no unusual activity seen." Xiang Shaolong said: "Keeping doors closed is unusual, and it's also a cover-up. They will definitely attack the Prince Dian's residence tonight. Only through outsiders can Lord Chunshen and the others shirk responsibility before the Empress Dowager."

Lou Wuxin said: "According to our spies at Lord Chunshen's place..." "We've heard there won't be any special action tonight, but Huang Zhan boasted that he'd force you to a duel at the banquet, and that he'd kill you outright. All of us brothers are waiting to see the show!" He added in a deep voice, "Huang Zhan is the best swordsman in Lord Chunshen's household. If we can kill him, it will be a serious blow to Lord Chunshen."

Xiang Shaolong said calmly, "Just cripple or seriously injure him, and that'll be enough for him." Lou Wuxin burst into laughter, "Serving Lord Xiang is truly different..." Just as he was about to continue, Jing Shan came to report that the Empress Dowager had summoned Xiang Shaolong to the palace. Xiang Shaolong was overjoyed, knowing that Li Yanyan had finally been moved.

After the palace maids served fragrant tea and withdrew, Li Yanyan, her face hidden behind a light veil, remained silent, leaving Xiang Shaolong, sitting to her right, to drink his tea in silence. This was a hall in a quiet courtyard of the inner palace. After the courtyard gate was closed, the garden was deserted, and it seemed as if only the two of them remained in the world. Recalling the humiliation and misfortune Li Yanyan suffered when she first came of age, and now having to feign compliance with the enemy for the sake of her twisted love for her brother and the overall situation of the Chu Kingdom, I couldn't help but feel pity for her.

Although she was the Empress Dowager, she was not happy at all. Just thinking about how she had to force herself to flatter and fawn over those two old and ugly men, Lord Chunshen and King Xiaolie, reveals her bitterness and pain. Now that everything was over, she was still restrained by powerful ministers, who used the late king's dying wish to suppress this weak woman and force her to do things against her will. Thinking of this, she couldn't help but sigh.

Li Yanyan said coldly, "Why do you sigh, sir?"

Xiang Shaolong sensed the wariness in her tone, knowing that she was particularly sensitive due to her past experiences, and that he could not treat her like an ordinary person. He said in a low voice, "I rarely listen attentively to anything, but just now my attention was focused on the sound of the wind rustling the leaves in the courtyard. I discovered that the sound was ever-changing, as melodious as heavenly music, but I had been neglecting it. Then I suddenly realized that many beautiful things have always been around us, but we have missed them because we are preoccupied with other things." Li Yanyan's delicate body trembled slightly, and she did not speak. Because of the veil, Xiang Shaolong could not see her expression.

After a long while, Li Yanyan whispered, "The Grand Uncle is my half-brother. Father only had the two of us, and he always protected me from childhood. I... I remember when I was fourteen, at a clan banquet, Li Ling, known as the Little Tyrant, and others harassed me in the garden. My brother fought them, single-handedly resisting more than ten of them. Although he was beaten black and blue, he still fought to the death. Finally, the adults were alerted, and they were relieved. Afterwards, I took care of him for seven days and seven nights before he woke up."

Xiang Shaolong could imagine the bitterness in her heart and sighed deeply. He also realized that their "brotherly and sisterly affection" was not without reason. And Li Yanyan's later misfortune might have been sown at that time. Li Yanyan murmured as if in a dream, "Within the Li clan, no one has ever respected my father, which caused my siblings and me to be bullied. Fortunately, my eldest brother never gave up. Every day before sunrise, he would practice swordsmanship and archery diligently, and he also read extensively. In my heart, no one is more skilled in swordsmanship or more learned than him."

Xiang Shaolong knew that she was bringing up these past events to strengthen her confidence in making a very important decision. Although she seemed to be confiding in him, she was actually speaking to herself. Li Yanyan slowly exhaled, causing the light gauze to flutter slightly, and softly said, "Do you know why I told you these things?" Xiang Shaolong softly replied, "Because the Empress Dowager trusts me and knows that I, Xiang Shaolong, am not the kind of despicable person who would use these things as leverage."

Li Yanyan slowly said, "That's only part of the reason. When my elder brother returned from Handan in disgrace, I learned from Guo Xiuer that he had actually been defeated by Dong Machi. After I clarified the situation, I sent people to investigate the real Dong Machi, only to find out that my elder brother had been fooled by you. And now, my elder brother..." Upon returning from Xianyang, he confirmed the suspicions and told Xiu'er. "Back then, I wondered, what kind of person is Xiang Shaolong? How could he, with only a few hundred men, manipulate powerful figures like my elder brother and Tian Dan so easily, only to be defeated so inexplicably? Even someone as powerful as Lü Buwei in the Qin court couldn't do anything to you. Today I finally understand."

Xiang Shaolong said with a bitter smile, "I was just lucky!" Li Yanyan lowered her head and said softly, "Would you like to sit next to me?"

After a long pause, Xiang Shaolong sat down about three feet to her right. Li Yanyan lowered her head and removed her veil. When she looked up at her beautiful face, her cheeks were already wet with tears. Xiang Shaolong was deeply moved and cried out, "Empress Dowager!" Li Yanyan closed her eyes, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face, but her tone was surprisingly calm as she said, word by word, "Xiang Shaolong! Kill Li Quan, Li Ling, and Lord Chunshen for me! They are all beasts!"

Xiang Shaolong said with heartache, "Shaolong obeys the Empress Dowager's decree!" Li Yanyan slowly opened her beautiful eyes, her delicate beauty, like pear blossoms in the rain, so pitiful that Xiang Shaolong forgot the boundaries between men and women. He reached out his sleeve and gently wiped away the tears still clinging to her flawless face. Li Yanyan seemed not to see it, remaining motionless as he did as he pleased.

After withdrawing his sleeve, Xiang Shaolong said in a deep voice, "Empress Dowager, rest assured, I will definitely protect the Grand Prince's brother and ensure he is not harmed." A feeling of utter absurdity rose in his heart. Back in Handan, Li Yuan was one of the people he most wanted to kill, yet now he was wholeheartedly fighting alongside him.

Li Yanyan's beautiful eyes shone with a gentle light as she gazed at his face. In a calm, still voice, she said, "Wu Zhan just reported that Dou Jie has privately mobilized the outer defense forces, moving a detachment of Yishu troops from the upper reaches of the Huai River to within ten miles of Shouchun City. He has also ordered a fleet of twenty warships to sail to the vicinity of Shouchun City, clearly threatening me against any rash actions. Therefore, I have no choice but to endure this. If it weren't for Wu Zhan holding things together, my elder brother and I would have been finished long ago. And my elder brother still seems..." "You don't know my suffering."

Xiang Shaolong smiled and said, "The number of attacking troops must be more than twice that of the defending troops to pose any threat. If you are attacking your own capital, and you have no legitimate reason to do so, you will only exhaust your army and make it appear strong but actually weak. Your Majesty need not worry." Li Yanyan rolled her eyes at him and said with a slight reproach, "You make it sound so easy. I only regret that our city is also unstable. Now the outer city troops are all concentrated on the outer defense, and the Imperial Guards have been transferred back to guard the palace. If Lord Chunshen and the others launch an attack against you, what am I supposed to

do?" Xiang Shaolong laughed heartily, revealing his unparalleled confidence, and then calmly said, "The quality of an army is more important than its quantity. The ones who should be worried are Li Quan and Li Ling." Li Yanyan stared at him fiercely and said, "Xiang Shaolong! Did you have someone else sneak into Shouchun?"

Xiang Shaolong smiled and said, "Your Majesty, please forgive me for keeping you in suspense. By tomorrow morning, Li Ling should have already passed away. I will then seek some justice for Your Majesty." Li Yanyan's delicate body trembled violently, and she said sharply, "Did my elder brother tell you about what happened to me? Otherwise, why would you say such a thing?"

Xiang Shaolong was surprised by her sensitivity and said, "Didn't the Empress Dowager just say that Li Ling bullied you and your brother? And that he beat your elder brother unconscious for seven days and seven nights?" Li Yanyan's high chest heaved rapidly, tears welling up in her eyes again. She stared blankly at Xiang Shaolong, her eyes empty, and suddenly burst into tears, throwing herself into his arms.

Xiang Shaolong comforted her sobbing shoulders and back, feeling the dampness spreading across his clothes. He felt a pang of sorrow, knowing that the emotions she had suppressed for so many years had finally broken through their defenses and erupted uncontrollably. He didn't offer any words of comfort, but simply caressed her like a baby, his heart filled with pity. At this moment, his heart was filled with noble sentiments and sincere feelings, and he only wanted to offer a little comfort to this fragile woman who had always disguised herself with a strong exterior.

After a long while, Li Yanyan stopped crying. With his help, she sat up straight and let him wipe away her tears. Then she lowered her head and said softly, "Tonight, I await your good news." Xiang Shaolong stood up without saying a word and quietly left. His entire lapel was soaked with her tears, and his heart was filled with the image of this unfortunate beauty.
