In Chapter 14 of *A Step into the Past*

, Xiang

Shaolong carefully examined the half-cup of wine that Shan Meimei had brought to his lips, but found nothing unusual. He didn't believe that the poison powder could dissolve in wine without stirring, but in the dim light of the ancient oil lamp, it was impossible to see the contents of the wine clearly. He immediately abandoned the idea of using the poisoned wine to deal with Guan Zhongxie. It wasn't that the plan was impossible; as long as Shan Meimei was captured, she would surely reveal that Guan Zhongxie was the mastermind. The problem was that it would be like openly breaking ties with Lü Buwei, losing the delicate balance of their long-standing treachery.

Just considering that Lü Buwei still had seven or eight years of power ahead, one could see how unwise this approach was. If this matter involved Lao Du, it would become even more complicated. At the same time, he thought that if he could pretend to drink the poisoned wine, Guan Zhongxie and Mo Ao would no longer plot against him. Afterwards, they would be suspicious, thinking that he was not afraid of the poisoned wine, or that Shan Meimei had not followed orders and was just making unfounded suspicions. Wouldn't that be even better? These thoughts flashed through Xiang Shaolong's mind at lightning speed, and he had already made up his mind.

Xiang Shaolong took the poisoned wine with one hand and put his other arm around Shan Meimei's beautiful waist. He laughed and said, "Miss Meimei must drink another sip to count as half a cup." With his back to Guiyan and Guan Zhongxie and the others sitting below, he was about to force a sip of wine down Shan Meimei's throat. Shan Meimei immediately turned pale and leaned back to avoid it, exclaiming, "How can you be so barbaric, Lord Xiang!"

Xiang Shaolong took the opportunity to release his hand from her waist. Shan Meimei, having exerted too much force, immediately fell onto the mat. While the attention of Changping Jun and the others at the opposite table was entirely focused on Shan Meimei, Xiang Shaolong moved his hand down, splashing wine a few times. He then used the act of helping the femme fatale up to seamlessly conceal his actions. Shan Meimei sat up straight, still shaken, speechless. Xiang Shaolong laughed loudly, "It's my fault that Miss fell; I should be punished!" He raised his cup, feigning a gulp.

Changping Jun sighed, "So Lord Xiang is quite resourceful. This is the first time I've seen Miss Meimei obediently lie down on the mat in public." Another burst of laughter erupted in the room. Xiang Shaolong put down his cup, and Shan Meimei feigned shyness, lowering her head to avoid revealing her inner panic; her expression was extremely subtle.

Guiyan, to his left, poured him another cup of wine. Guan Zhong chuckled wickedly, "If Lord Xiang can endure this pain for a moment, perhaps he'll be rewarded with another night of lying down by Miss Meimei!" The Changping brothers burst into laughter again, while the women feigned shyness, laughing and teasing incessantly. Xiang Shaolong reached out and tightened his embrace around Shan Meimei's soft waist, bringing the wine to her lips, and said softly, "This cup is my apology!"

Shan Meimei raised her fragrant lips, gave him a complex look, and silently drank the entire cup of wine. The crowd roared with approval. On the other side, Guiyan protested, "Lord Xiang, you're showing favoritism!" Xiang Shaolong, seeing that Guan Zhongxie didn't suspect anything, was overjoyed and said, "I'm the fairest man. Come! Let me serve Miss Guiyan some wine."

Changwenjun exclaimed, "What's the point of drinking? You have to feed her mouth-to-mouth!" Guiyan let out a soft moan and lay down on his lap, looking alluringly inviting him to feast. Luckily, she wasn't pressing on the wound on her back.

Although a beautiful body lay sprawled on his lap, Xiang Shaolong wasn't greatly moved. Firstly, his mind was still on Shan Meimei and Guan Zhongxie, observing their reactions; secondly, he generally believed that Guiyan was only there to curry favor with him, the head of the capital's military and police, feigning affection. Although Guiyan's beauty couldn't compare to Shan Meimei's, among the women, only Yang Yu, who served Guan Zhongxie, could rival her in looks. Taking advantage of her was a pleasure in itself. So he took a sip of wine, lowered his head, and kissed Guiyan's fragrant lips.

Guiyan breathed softly, skillfully drinking it down. Drinking while leaning back like that wasn't easy, and it was truly a feat for her. Amidst the jeers and cheers of the crowd, just as Xiang Shaolong was about to retreat, Guiyan's hands were tightly intertwined, and she secretly offered him half a sip of wine. Xiang Shaolong couldn't help but feel a surge of ecstasy. He opened his arms and returned the kiss, enjoying it for a while before separating from Guiyan, whose cheeks were burning. Lord Changping and the others applauded and cheered. Guiyan

approached him weakly and softly, her allure overflowing, and said, "Lord Xiang, please don't leave tonight, okay? I guarantee your leg injury won't worsen." Because she whispered it in his ear, only Shan Meimei on the other side heard these two sentences. The latter's expression darkened, and she lowered her head, clearly because Xiang Shaolong was "dying soon," and she was his murderer.

Xiang Shaolong kissed Guiyan's fair neck and laughed, "If this kind of thing isn't enjoyed to the fullest, it's just a wasted effort." He then reached out and put his arm around Shan Meimei's slender waist, feigning surprise, "Miss Meimei, is something on your mind?"

Shan Meimei was startled and said insincerely, "Lord Xiang only dotes on Sister Yan, of course I'm unhappy." Guan Zhongxie quickly covered for Shan Meimei, saying, "Lord Xiang, you've managed to make our proud and aloof Miss Meimei jealous, which shows your skill. Now it's our turn to be jealous of you."

As Xiang Shaolong cursed inwardly who his brothers were, Chang Wenjun laughed, "Lord Xiang certainly won't skimp on this other drink." Xiang Shaolong thought to himself, "Why not go all the way and tease this cunning beauty?" He then took another sip of wine, bent down to kiss Shan Meimei's cherry lips, and kissed her passionately. Afterwards, he didn't let her go, kissing her intensely, using all sorts of 21st-century kissing techniques to provoke her. Shan

Meimei's previously hardened body softened, responding passionately. Xiang Shaolong sighed inwardly, knowing that under this unusual stimulation, coupled with the thought of his impending death, Shan Meimei felt guilty and her true feelings were stirred. After their lips parted, tears were visible in Shan Meimei's eyes, showing that she had no choice but to poison him.

Xiang Shaolong didn't want to leave in a hurry, afraid that people would notice the still-wet wine stains. At this moment, Gui Yan came to bother him again. Xiang Shaolong had a sudden idea, pretending to accidentally knock over the half-full cup of wine on the mat, covering the original stains. After a commotion, Shan Meimei unexpectedly claimed to be unwell and left first. Without their most popular girl, the Changping brothers' spirits dampened considerably, and Xiang Shaolong seized

the opportunity to take his leave. Whether Guiyan's feelings were genuine or feigned, she escorted him all the way to the plaza where the carriages were parked, repeatedly urging him to return and making him promise before finally letting him onto the Changping brothers' carriage. Suddenly, Xiang Shaolong found himself somewhat drawn to this ancient "Black Panther Bar."

Back at the yamen, he met Teng Yi, who was on night duty, and recounted the events of the moment. Teng Yi wiped a cold sweat from his brow. Teng Yi sighed, "We're not quick-witted enough. We kept thinking Mo Ao's scheme would take place during the hunt, but who knew he'd use a honey trap tonight? If we knew the effects of the poison, Shao Long could have acted more convincingly." Xiang Shao Long affirmed, "The poison must have taken effect after the hunt."

Teng Yi asked in surprise, "How can you be so confident, Third Brother?" Xiang Shao Long said, "Tu Xian told me that Mo Ao made a batch of tools for underwater assassinations, probably to deal with you and Jing Jun. If I die from the poison afterward, the Wu family will have no one to use for revenge."

Teng Yi angrily said, "If I let Mo Ao live past the three-day hunt, I'll change my surname to his." Xiang Shao Long's expression suddenly changed drastically, "We've been thinking only of our own people. Perhaps Mo Ao's assassination targets include Lu Gong and Xu..." "If it happens inside, that would be terrible."

Teng Yi exhaled a cold breath and said, "Lu Buwei isn't that bold, is he?" Xiang Shaolong said, "Normally he wouldn't dare to be so audacious, but now the situation is chaotic, and it involves Gao Lingjun's rebellion. Afterwards, Lu Buwei can easily shift all the blame onto Gao Lingjun. With someone who is scheming against someone who is not, Lu Buwei's chances of succeeding are too high."

Thinking of this, he could no longer hold back and stood up, saying, "I want to see Lord Lu and warn him as soon as possible." Teng Yi said, "I think you should go see Xu Xian first. In terms of shrewdness, Lord Lu is no match for him. If he trusts us, he will make proper arrangements."

Xiang Shaolong thought it made sense. Under the protection of the eighteen Iron Guards and more than a hundred cavalrymen, he pretended to inspect the city's defenses and headed towards Xu Xian's Left Prime Minister's residence next to the palace. Since he was now the commander of the capital guards, everything inside and outside the city, except for the palace, was within his jurisdiction. Because the banquet had ended early, it was only the first watch of the night, but apart from a few flower-lined streets, there were very few pedestrians, only the occasional passing carriage.

Upon arriving at the Left Prime Minister's residence, Xu Xian, one of the three great generals of Western Qin, greeted him in the inner hall. This outstanding figure smiled and said, "I knew Shaolong would come to see me before the hunt." Xiang Shaolong was greatly surprised and asked, "Why did Prime Minister Xu have this idea?"

Xu Xian sighed and said, "Since the time of Duke Mu, our Great Qin has risen to become one of the hegemons of the world. Unfortunately, our eastward route has always been blocked by the Jin people, so we could only turn around and wage war against the Western Rong. As a result, we annexed twelve states and expanded our territory by a thousand li. When Duke Mu passed away, most of the land in the Wei River basin fell into our hands. However, from then until now, after establishing the three eastern commanderies, we have made no progress for more than two hundred years. The reason for this is not so much that our route was blocked, but rather that we had internal problems. If we are strong, who can stop us? So this is still a question of who is stronger and who is weaker."

Xiang Shaolong was not very familiar with that period of history and could only nod and accept the instruction. Xu Xian, his enthusiasm growing, sighed, "After the division of Jin into three states, we should have seized the opportunity to rise up. Unfortunately, during those forty-odd years, the court went awry, power fell into the hands of treacherous ministers. Roughly speaking, one ruler was forced to commit suicide, one crown prince was denied the throne, and another ruler and his mother were murdered and their bodies drowned in the abyss. The Wei people took advantage of our internal strife, repeatedly invading and causing us to lose all of the Hexi region."

Xiang Shaolong began to understand Xu Xian's meaning. Lü Buwei was now following the same old path. Regardless of whether Lü Buwei succeeded in seizing power, or even if he deposed Xiao Pan, the final result was that Qin would never be able to dominate the world. This was precisely what Xu Xian cared about most. Xu Xian stood up and said in a deep voice, "Shaolong! Come with me for a walk in the back garden!" Xiang Shaolong felt a knot in his heart, knowing that he must have some secret matter to discuss.

Under the bright moonlight, the two entered the back garden and strolled along the path. Xu Xian sighed and said, "We Qin people are separated from the Rong and Di by only a thin line. We are still bound by barbarian customs. Although the Zhou capital was built here, it was like a tattered brocade robe covering a ragged garment. Once the Zhou dynasty was gone, the tatters remained, and the people are still wild and unruly. Fortunately, during the reign of Duke Xiao, Shang Yang's reforms instilled in us a habit of obeying rules through strict laws and punishments. He also valued military merit, and rewards could only be obtained through foreign wars, which made our Qin invincible. However, with Lü Buwei's actions, he arbitrarily appointed his cronies and introduced the decadent atmosphere of the six states into our Qin, allowing sycophants to rise to power and engage in a culture of flattery and sycophancy. This is extremely detrimental to our Qin. I have read his Lüshi Chunqiu. Humph! If Shang Yang were to come back to life, I would burn it to the ground."

Xiang Shaolong finally heard another opinion besides Lu Gong's xenophobic motives, which was a fundamental ideological conflict. Lü Buwei was too arrogant and subjective, completely lacking in empathy for the Qin people. The Qin people he encountered were mostly honest and simple, not fond of pretense; Xu Xian, Lu Gong, Wang He, the Changping brothers, and An Guxi were all like this. In comparison, Lü Buwei, Mo Ao, Guan Zhongxie, and Lao Du were all outliers. The reason the Qin people were invincible was precisely because they were the most powerful people, coupled with Shang Yang's discipline, making them truly unmatched.

Lü Buwei's appointment of the incompetent Guan Zhongxie and Lü Xiong, and his attempt to let the latter off the hook when he committed offenses, was exactly what the Qin people deeply resented. Xiao Pan's stern and decisive handling of Lü Xiong was a perfect gamble. Xu Xian stopped, his piercing gaze falling on Xiang Shaolong's face. He said in a deep voice, "I don't reject Lü Buwei because he's not of my race. Shang Yang was from Wei, yet he is the one I respect most." Xiang Shaolong nodded. "I understand what you mean, Minister Xu."

Xu Xian shook his head and sighed, "Lü Buwei has trapped himself, thinking that by harming the King, the Qin dynasty would be his. Little did he know that Heaven has not yet abandoned our Great Qin, and has produced a wise ruler like the Crown Prince. Therefore, even if I, Xu Xian, am shattered to pieces, I will protect the Crown Prince until he formally ascends the throne." Xiang Shaolong was secretly startled and said, "..." Judging from Xu Xiang's tone, the situation seemed quite critical.

Xu Xian pulled him to a stone seat beside a small bridge and whispered, "Originally, I wasn't worried. The problem is the Dongjun uprising. Lü Buwei sent Meng Ao and Wang He to suppress it, completely draining the troops near the capital. Now, only the Imperial Guards, the Cavalry, and the Imperial Guards are holding the line. The situation is more perilous than anything seen in a hundred years." Xiang Shaolong frowned and said, "As far as I know, the Dongjun uprising was a conspiracy between Gaoling Jun and Zhao general Pang Nuan. Didn't Lü Buwei make this clear?"

Xu Xian... His face was clouded with gloom, and he groaned, "That's true, but everyone knows how much power Lord Gaoling has. Ten Lord Gaolings couldn't defeat half of Lü Buwei. How come Lü Buwei only realized this when things came to a head and had to deal with it hastily?" Xiang Shaolong felt a chill run down his spine and stammered, "What does Prime Minister Xu mean...?"

Xu Xian said decisively, "This matter must be related to Lü Buwei. As long as Lü Buwei plants spies among Lord Gaoling's advisors, he can control Lord Gaoling like a puppet and create this situation." He then said solemnly, "..." "If Lü Buwei can eliminate you and the two deputy commanders during this period, both the cavalry and the guards will fall into Lü Buwei's hands. What do you think will happen then? The reason I guessed you would come to see me tonight is very simple: if you are not Lü Buwei's man, with your intelligence, you will surely notice something amiss. Do you understand, Shaolong?"

Xiang Shaolong secretly thought it was a close call. Gaining Xu Xian's trust was not easy. Until just now, Xu Xian still suspected that he was a clever pawn of Lü Buwei, or rather, a counter-espionage agent with multiple identities. Somewhat embarrassed, he said, "Thank you for your trust, Minister Xu." Then, puzzled, he asked, "Even though Lü Buwei has both the Imperial Cavalry and the Imperial Guard under his command, if his target is the Crown Prince, I'm afraid no one will obey his orders."

Xu Xian sighed, "Shaolong is still inexperienced. Unless Lü Buwei obtains full military power, he will never touch a hair on the Crown Prince's head. This is an incredibly foolish move. But as long as he can kill me and Lord Lu, and then pin the blame on Lord Gaoling, wouldn't the Qin Dynasty be his then? Meng Ao goes without saying, and Wang He, that muddle-headed fool, would be helpless in that situation. Plus, with the Empress Dowager protecting Lü Buwei, who would dare to provoke him?" Then, a sharp glint flashed in his eyes, and he said, "He who strikes first gains the upper hand, and he who strikes later is controlled by others. As long as Lü Buwei lives, we can forget about having a good life. Qin will repeat the same mistakes and be trapped by powerful ministers."

Xiang Shaolong almost groaned. From Xu Xian's perspective, the strategy was entirely correct. The problem was that Xiang Shaolong knew that before Xiao Pan ascended the throne, no one could take Lü Buwei's life. If they couldn't take his life, they would naturally lose theirs. How could they possibly win this battle? He only regretted that he couldn't use this reason to persuade Xu Xian to abandon the idea. Should he tell him that history clearly stated Lü Buwei wouldn't die so soon? Just as he was racking his brains, Xu Xian said again: "As long as the Crown Prince Zheng is willing to nod his head slightly, I can guarantee that Lü Buwei won't live past these three days." Xiang Shaolong sighed: "Has Prime Minister Xu considered the consequences?"

Xu Xian sneered: "The three people with the biggest problems are Empress Dowager Ji, Meng Ao, and Du Bi. The most difficult one to deal with is Du Bi. Once Lü Buwei is gone, he will definitely take the opportunity to support Cheng Qiao. If it weren't for this concern, Lu Gong and I would have already taken action when the late king passed away. Of course! Another reason is Wang He's opposition. That's why I hope you can persuade the Crown Prince. Now..." "The person he trusts most is you, Shaolong."

Xiang Shaolong said, "But I have another idea. First, we need to use the blood test to formally confirm that the Crown Prince and Lü Buwei have no connection whatsoever. Second, we need to kill Lü Buwei's chief strategist. Once that person is gone, Lü Buwei will become a tiger without claws, unable to do anything evil. Third..." Xu Xian waved his hand to interrupt him, "Are you talking about Mo Ao?"

Xiang Shaolong asked in surprise, "Prime Minister Xu, you've actually heard of this person?" Xu Xian said casually, "He doesn't even have that much ability?" How could anyone dare to oppose Lü Buwei? It would be best to eliminate Guan Zhongxie as well, that would be even more prudent. But the current situation is that you're wary of me, and I'm wary of you. Unless we openly fight, who can do anything to the other?

Xiang Shaolong knew that this alone wasn't enough to sway the wise man, so he whispered, "The third is to bring out Lao Du to oppose Lü Buwei. As long as we drag this out until the Crown Prince's coronation, Lü Buwei will have lost this game." Xu Xianxiong's body trembled, and he asked in confusion, "Isn't Lao Du Lü Buwei's man?"

Xiang Shaolong explained the whole plan. Tuo Shang said, "I also suggest that the Crown Prince give Lü Buwei the honorary title of 'Uncle' to appease his wolfish ambitions." Xu Xian took a deep breath and looked him over for a while as if he were seeing him for the first time, his eyes gleaming. "When it comes to playing tricks and scheming, even Mo Ao would have to give you a run for your money. No wonder you're still so healthy and lively today."

Xiang Shaolong felt ashamed and said, "Fortunately, I drank one less cup of wine tonight, otherwise I really wouldn't dare to accept what you said, Prime Minister Xu." Under Xu Xian's questioning, he told him what had happened that night.

Xu Xian nodded in agreement, saying, "You're right. If we don't kill Mo Ao sooner or later, he'll kill us. I estimate this poisoned wine will take effect in seven days. King Xiaowen drank the medicinal soup sent by Lü Buwei that day, and seven days later he suddenly had difficulty breathing and suffocated to death. Since no poison has ever taken effect so suddenly after seven days, although we suspect something is amiss, it's difficult to pinpoint Lü Buwei as the culprit, and of course, we can't find any evidence. Alas! Now no one dares to eat anything sent by Lü Buwei. It's really strange. The medicinal soup that killed King Xiaowen was, as usual, tasted by a eunuch, but that eunuch didn't show any signs of poisoning?"

Xiang Shaolong secretly thought that Mo Ao's skill in using poison was probably several times better than that of the dead Zhao Mushang. Even slow-acting poisons always leave traces; symptoms of poisoning appear after ingestion. How could a poison take seven days to take effect after being swallowed? Even in the 21st century, this would likely be difficult to achieve, unless the poison was encased in a specially made pouch, adhering to the stomach wall after being swallowed. Only after a period of time, when the surface was corroded by stomach acid, would the poison be released and cause death. Thinking of this, a thought struck him, and he wished he could immediately return to the Drunken Wind Pavilion to check if there was a single poison pill encased in some kind of protective substance where he had poured the poisoned wine.

Seeing Xiang Shaolong's face shift between light and dark, Xu Xian asked, "What are you thinking about?" Xiang Shaolong replied, "I'm thinking about how to ask Prime Minister Xu to postpone dealing with Lü Buwei."

Xu Xian laughed, "I, Xu Xian, am not a reckless fool who only relies on brute force. Since Shaolong has such a brilliant plan, Lu Gong and I will observe the situation for now. However, if you fail to kill Mo Ao, it will be our turn to deal with Lü Buwei. It's better than letting him be killed by a poisonous scheme." Xiang Shaolong patted his chest and guaranteed, "Give me ten days! Perhaps I can use his own methods against him and make him die an unjust death!" Xu Xian stared at him in astonishment, speechless for a moment.
Chapter Two: Night Raid on a Brothel

Xiang Shaolong nimbly scaled the high wall and landed in the garden of Zuifeng Tower. It was just past midnight, and the seven or eight courtyards behind the main building of Zuifeng Tower were still brightly lit and filled with music and revelry. It took Xiang Shaolong a while to recognize the elegant courtyard where Guan Zhongxie had just entertained him. Seeing it still brightly lit, he couldn't help but groan in dismay. He wondered if Guan Zhongxie had used it to entertain another group of distinguished guests after he left. His curiosity piqued, he silently slipped forward under the cover of darkness and the trees. Upon reaching the entrance, he crouched down in horror, his heart pounding wildly. A group of burly men were guarding the main gate, several of whom were clearly Lü Buwei's close associates.

Could it be Lü Buwei? Looking closer, he saw that the courtyard was heavily guarded, with men patrolling and patrolling all around. Of course, this was no challenge for a special forces soldier skilled in scaling walls and leaping across rooftops. After assessing the situation, he chose a large tree beside the courtyard, quickly climbed it, and then shot out a grappling hook. He then carefully slid down the hook to the edge of the eaves, peering through a vent near the top.

One glance was enough to send his soul tumbling out of his body, his limbs turning ice-cold, and he nearly fell off the roof. In the brightly lit hall stood Guan Zhongxie, Mo Ao, Wu Fu (the owner of Zuifenglou), Gui Yan, and Shan Meimei, examining wine stains on a long mat that had been moved aside. Wu Fu sighed, "Mr. Mo is indeed a brilliant strategist. He first instructed me to give Xiang Shaolong a treasure so that he wouldn't be on guard, and then made him think that it was our beautiful Meimei who was the one who was going to kill him. Who knew that it was our Guiyan who would take his life?"

Guan Zhongxie said, "I, Guan Zhongxie, have nothing to say about Brother Mo's brilliance. The most ingenious thing is that this kid thought he had escaped a great calamity and no longer had any sense of vigilance. It is truly a masterpiece." At this moment, the door opened wide, and Lü Buwei walked in with a beaming smile and a radiant expression. As Xiang Shaolong stared in disbelief, his blood nearly freezing, Shan Meimei, her breasts like swallows, threw herself into Lü Buwei's arms, saying sweetly, "Meimei has rendered a great service to Prime Minister Lü, how should Prime Minister Lü reward me!"

Lü Buwei's hand moved from her slender waist to her round buttocks, giving them two hard slaps, and he said with a wicked smile, "Then let me reward you properly tonight!" Mo Ao then reached out and embraced Guiyan, saying, "Prime Minister Lü, don't forget our good Guiyan. If it weren't for her sweet tongue, how could Xiang Shaolong have fallen

for her trap?" Xiang Shaolong felt a chill run down his spine, almost falling forward to be stabbed by Lü Buwei. Heavens! He had a poison sac inside his stomach that could kill him at any moment, and in this era there was no surgery. Was Xiang Shaolong doomed? At this moment, Lü Buwei, with Shan Meimei in his arms, went to the wine stain. After examining it closely, he laughed loudly, "No matter how clever you, Xiang Shaolong, are, you'll still fall for my tricks! You'll think you've outsmarted us, but when the medicine has opened a hole in your throat, you won't even know what's going on."

Xiang Shaolong's heart stirred, and hope ignited. If the medicine pouch was only stuck to his throat, there would be a chance to remove it. Guan Zhongxie said, "Miss Meimei's performance was truly brilliant; she almost fooled me." Lü Buwei leaned down and kissed Shan Meimei's fragrant lips, making her moan softly, her desire alluring. Guan Zhongxie placed a hand on Wu Fu's shoulder and laughed, "After this succeeds, the official position you hold, Master Wu, will surely be extraordinary!"

Wu Fu thanked him gladly, but then asked with some worry, "What if he accidentally spits that thing out?" Gui Yan, leaning against Mo Ao, giggled, "Don't worry, Master. That thing is incredibly sticky. If his tongue hadn't caught it, I don't know what I would have done!"

Mo Ao explained, "The worst thing about this thing is that it sticks to the bottom of the cup. Otherwise, my little swallow wouldn't have had to sacrifice her fragrant tongue to let this guy take advantage of her." Guan Zhongxie laughed, "It's just a small advantage! The big advantage, of course, is left to Brother Mo." For a moment, the man lewdly laughed, while the woman protested coquettishly.

Xiang Shaolong was extremely anxious, wishing he could leave immediately and find a way to get rid of the poison pill. This was indeed a brilliant plan. In that moment of passionate intimacy, their tongues intertwined, they never imagined it would be a kiss of death. He himself had been careless, assuming the other party didn't know he'd seen through Shan Meimei's identity, and his elaborate act was truly laughable. Lü Buwei laughed, "The spring night is too short. Mr. Mo should go to Xiao Yan's boudoir and properly thank the beauty." Turning to Wu Fu, he said, "Master Wu, you've done very well this time. I, Lü Buwei, will certainly not treat you poorly." He laughed heartily and left with Shan Meimei. Xiang Shaolong knew he wouldn't hear any more secrets and quietly left.

Xiang Shaolong let out a miserable groan. Teng Yi pulled the bent, thin copper branch from his open mouth; a small, round piece at the end was stuck with a black pill, no bigger than a fly. Tao Fang, Jing Jun, Pu Bu, Liu Chao, and the others nearby breathed a sigh of relief, wiping the cold sweat from their brows. Xiang Shaolong touched his scraped throat, unable to speak. Teng Yi moved the poison pill closer to their eyes, and everyone leaned in to examine it. Jing Jun said fiercely, "What method is there to get this poison pill down Mo Ao's throat?"

Xiang Shaolong cleared his throat and said in a hoarse voice, "If this poison pill is mixed with wine, it will stick to the bottom of the cup, but it didn't happen in the medicinal soup that poisoned King Zhuangxiang." Tao Fang said with great joy, "That means that as long as we get that prescription, we can find some of the ingredients that can neutralize its stickiness, so that it will only stick to the throat. In that case, poisoning Mo Ao will no longer be difficult. This prescription must have been recorded."

Teng Yi looked down at Xiang Shaolong, and the two of them simultaneously thought of Tu Xian, then shook their heads. If Tu Xian could easily poison Mo Ao, he would have poisoned him long ago. Pu Bu said dejectedly, "Even if we find a way to neutralize the stickiness of this poison pill, it's useless. Are we supposed to just bring him a bowl of medicine and coax him to drink it?" Xiang Shaolong said, "We can adapt to the situation. I'll carry the poison pill with me and act accordingly. It's late! Let's try to get some sleep, otherwise we might not have the energy to deal with Mo Ao's other schemes tomorrow. Second Brother and Xiao Jun need to be extra vigilant." Everyone agreed and went back to their rooms to rest.

When Xiang Shaolong returned to the back hall, he couldn't help but think of Ji Yanran and his other beautiful wives. In a daze, a sweet voice rang in his ears, "Master is back!" Xiang Shaolong looked over in surprise and saw Zhou Wei lying fully clothed on a mat in a corner waiting for him to return. It seemed that he had just woken her up. Seeing her disheveled hair and her expression after sleeping, he felt a sense of foreboding.

Since Zhao Ni and the other women were sent to the northern pastures, he had been constantly dealing with the treacherous clique of Lü Buwei and his associates, inevitably creating unnecessary complications and anxieties. He avoided other beauties like the plague. This was true of Qin Qing, and it was also true of Ying Ying. Although he had promised Changping...
The Jun brothers tried their best for Ying Ying, but it was mostly perfunctory; they weren't truly enthusiastic and knew they might not be able to defeat Guan Zhongxie. However, none of that mattered as much as the headache caused by Zhou Wei. Judging from her behavior,

she was clearly a person with extremely high self-esteem and a stubborn streak, capable of both love and hate. Fortunately, their relationship was still shallow, leaving room for maneuver. He coughed lightly and said, "It's so late, aren't you going back to sleep?" Zhou Wei rose, bowed, and gently helped him remove his outer robe, saying happily, "I slept a long time ago, and I'm full of energy now. Master Tao arranged the last room for me. Shall I have this maid serve you a bath now?" Her cheeks were already flushed red as she finished speaking.

Xiang Shaolong inwardly cursed. He hadn't had a wife or maidservant with him for many nights, and tonight he had been surrounded by beautiful women, arousing his desire. If he said he didn't want women, he would only be deceiving himself. He didn't want to give her his body; the consequences were unimaginable. But could she bear it if he refused outright? Fortunately, just as Zhou Wei was about to undress him, footsteps sounded. Xiang Shaolong turned around and saw that it was Jing Jun. He was surprised and asked, "Jun! What's wrong?" Jing Jun still thought Zhou Wei was Zhou Liang's wife and stared at her strangely.

After Xiang Shaolong quietly instructed Zhou Wei to retreat into the room, he asked, "What is it?" Jing Jun looked at the spot where Zhou Wei had disappeared and asked curiously, "How did she end up here?"

After Xiang Shaolong explained her sibling relationship with Zhou Liang, Jing Jun's eyes immediately lit up, and he chuckled, "Third Brother is truly blessed with a beautiful woman. If Zhou Wei weren't dressed in simple clothes and without makeup, her beauty would certainly not be inferior to Tian Feng and Tian Zhen." Xiang Shaolong's heart stirred, and after he told him to sit down, he smiled and said, "Little Jun seems to have a bit of a crush on her?"

Jing Jun said shyly, "Third Brother is joking. How could Little Jun dare to... " "You've come to compete with Third Brother for a woman?" Xiang Shaolong said cheerfully. "She's not my woman. If you're interested, why not put in some effort? Third Brother won't mind at all, and I'll be very grateful!"

Jing Jun exclaimed happily, "Hey! Let me try! When it comes to wooing girls, I've improved a lot compared to before." Xiang Shaolong said, "It's decided then. Why did you come to see me instead of resting?"

Jing Jun asked, "Can Third Brother's legs still be used?" Xiang Shaolong said, "As long as we don't fight, there's no problem. Do you have any good ideas?" "What do you mean?"

Jing Jun said. "There are still more than two hours until dawn. This is our only chance to kill Mo Ao." Xiang Shaolong frowned and said, "Mo Ao has many capable people around him, and Lü Buwei is there too. How can we make a move?"

Jing Jun said, "Of course, we can't force it. However, I know the environment of Zuifeng Tower very well, and I also know where Shan Meimei and Gui Yan's boudoir is. As long as we can get there, we can find a way to feed that poison pill into Mo Ao's throat, and then we can easily wait for him to die from the poison. Wouldn't that be great?" Xiang Shaolong was delighted. "What's the plan?"

Jing Jun spread his palm, revealing a three-inch-long black twig-like object. He said smugly, "This is a fragrant branch from the Bewitching Tree. If you inhale just a little of the smoke after burning it, you'll immediately become drowsy. If you inhale it while you're asleep, I guarantee you won't wake up even if I slap you. Third Brother, do you understand?" Xiang Shaolong pondered for a moment, then decisively said, "You'd better inform Second Brother. If this delightful thing happens without him, we'll both get scolded."

Using a grappling hook, the three brothers silently slipped into the east side of the Drunken Wind Pavilion, hiding in the shadows of the flower bushes. Light could be faintly seen through the trees. Jing Jun, an experienced traveler, said, "There are four small buildings in the bamboo forest, each housing one of the four eldest sisters of Zuifeng Tower: Shan Meimei, Yang Yu, Gui Yan, and Bai Lei, collectively known as the Four Beauties of Zuifeng. Gui Yan's building is located on the left rear side. As long as we can get past the bamboo forest, we'll have a chance to sneak into the building. If I remember correctly, each building has a fragrant osmanthus tree planted next to it, making hiding a piece of cake."

Teng Yi frowned and said, "With Lü Buwei inside, the defenses will be extremely tight. The bamboo trees are also difficult to climb. As long as someone guards the entrances and exits in the bamboo forest, how can we get in?" Xiang Shaolong asked, "What's the situation on the other side?"

Jing Jun smiled bitterly, "It's still a bamboo forest, so this place has a name: 'Hidden Seclusion in the Bamboo Forest.' As long as we get past this barrier, Mo Ao is doomed." Footsteps sounded, and two warriors carrying lanterns walked over, chatting and laughing as they went. The three men held their breath and listened intently.

One of them said, "These four girls are indeed beautiful and alluring. Even our Uncle Guan has fallen for them and is staying overnight at Yang Yu's little building." Another said, "I heard there's also Bai Lei. I wonder if she'll be entertaining someone tonight. If not, my brother and I will take care of her."

The first one sighed, "Can you afford to pay for the night? Besides, I heard that even if you have money, she might not even give you a second glance!" After they had gone some distance, Xiang Shaolong had a sudden thought and said, "Bai Lei is probably entertaining Han Chuang. Maybe there will be a chance." Before he

finished speaking, voices came from the direction of the front yard. He vaguely recognized one of them as his old friend Han Chuang, and there was also a woman's coquettish laughter. It was undoubtedly Bai Lei. Teng Yi cried out anxiously, "How can we deceive Bai Lei?" At this moment, a group of people had already entered the flower-lined path. Leading them were two beautiful maids carrying lanterns, followed by four of Han Chuang's guards, then Han Chuang and Bai Lei embracing, and finally eight more personal guards. Seeing this formation, Xiang Shaolong was also at a loss.

Jing Jun suddenly leaned closer to Teng Yi and said, "Bai Lei doesn't recognize Second Brother!" Xiang Shaolong had a sudden inspiration and said, "Second Brother can impersonate Prince Dan's men; Han Chuang just finished drinking with him."

Just then, Han Chuang and his men passed their hiding place, turned onto a straight path, and headed towards the bamboo forest. Teng Yi first unfastened his sword, then steeled himself and rushed out, shouting in a low voice, "My lord, please wait! Prince Dan has sent me with important news." Han Chuang and his men stopped, and the guards all showed wary expressions. Teng Yi strode forward. Although the crowd saw that he wasn't wearing a sword, they still stared at him menacingly, their hands gripping the hilts. Han Chuang released Bai Lei and said coldly, "What does Prince Dan have to say?"

Teng Yi knew that Han Chuang's men would never allow him to get close to their master, so he stood at a distance and bowed, saying, "This humble one is Long Shan, the Right Vanguard General before Prince Dan. Has Lord Han forgotten me so quickly?" Long Shan was the pseudonym Teng Yi used when he was in Handan.

Han Chuang was stunned for a moment, then realized what he meant and laughed, "I remember, I remember! Right Vanguard General, please forgive my poor eyesight in the dark." He turned to Bai Lei and said, "Little Lei, go back to your room first. I'll be there immediately." Bai Lei had no suspicions. She told Han Chuang not to keep her waiting and left with two maids.

Under Han Chuang's cover, the three changed into the outer garments of his men and entered the heavily guarded bamboo forest without incident, arriving at Bai Lei's residence, which was separated from Guiyan's boudoir by only a fragrant osmanthus tree. Han Chuang gave the three a wink and went upstairs by himself. Two of Bai Lei's four personal maids were sent to serve them.

Xiang Shaolong, Jing Jun, and Teng Yi, fearing that the maids would recognize them, had already informed Han Chuang's men. Two of them hurriedly dragged the two maids into the room, and soon, soft moans filled the room, and the sounds of spring filled the air. With Han Chuang's guards standing watch outside the building, the three climbed up the osmanthus tree one after another and reached the roof of Guiyan's small building. Snoring could be heard from inside the room. In terms of the ability to scale walls and roofs, neither Xiang Shaolong nor Teng Yi could match Jing Jun. He seized the opportunity to slip through the window and enter the room. In an instant, Mo Ao's snoring turned into heavy breathing.

Xiang Shaolong signaled Teng Yi to stay on the roof, and he climbed in himself. Jing Jun was squatting beside the couch, giving him a hand signal that everything was going smoothly. Xiang Shaolong was overjoyed and rushed over. In the light of the oil lamps, Jing Jun had already pried open Mo Ao's mouth. Xiang Shaolong quickly took out the poison pill and inserted it into Mo Ao's throat with a copper stick, making sure it was firmly stuck. Just as he was about to leave, footsteps sounded outside the door. Xiang Shaolong and Jing Jun were startled and simultaneously stepped over the two people on the couch, hiding in a dark corner on the other side of the couch. There

was a knock on the door, and someone outside said, "Master Mo! Prime Minister Lü has urgent business with you." Mo Ao and Gui Yan, of course, did not react at all. Xiang Shaolong, quick-witted, reached out and pinched Mo Ao's foot hard. Fortunately, Jing Jun's sedative incense was only enough to make Mo Ao unconscious for a while. Mo Ao groaned in pain and woke up. The man called out again, "Master Mo!"

Mo Ao, who had just woken up, asked groggily, "What is it?" The man who had knocked on the door replied, "Prime Minister Lü just received an urgent message and is currently waiting for Master Mo downstairs. Oh! Prime Minister Lü and Master Guan have arrived."

Xiang Shaolong and Jing Jun knew something was wrong, but Mo Ao had already sat up, making escape impossible. Fortunately, Lü Buwei's voice came from outside the door: "We'll wait for you in the outer hall." Mo Ao nudged Gui Yan, and seeing no reaction, pinched her snow-white breasts before getting up, dressing, and unsteadily pushing open the door to leave. This time, Xiang Shaolong and Jing Jun were overjoyed, quickly sneaking to the door and eavesdropping.

Lu Buwei spoke first: "I just received news that the short-lived Xiang Shaolong went to see Xu Xian and discussed things for an entire hour before returning to the Wu residence. Hmph! What kind of conspiracy do you think they're plotting, Mr. Mo?" Mo Ao, clearly still affected by the bewitching incense, was not as quick-witted as usual and groaned: "I don't know if it's because I drank too much in my excitement, but my head hurts a bit."

Guan Zhongxie said: "Brother Mo, have a cup of hangover tea first, and you'll be fine after calming down." Then came the sound of tea being poured and water being served. Judging from the sounds, only Lu Buwei, Mo Ao, and Guan Zhongxie were outside.

After a while, Lü Buwei said, "Mr. Mo, can you be sure that the bastard will only take the poison during the last night's hunt? Without the cover of Gao Lingjun's attack on the camp, everyone will guess that we were the ones who did it." Mo Ao breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Don't worry, Prime Minister Lü. I've had more than ten people tested, so I guarantee there won't be any mistakes in timing."

Guan Zhong chuckled, "Without Xiang Shaolong, they will definitely be in chaos, while we are well prepared. We'll first protect the Crown Prince and the Empress Dowager as they cross the river. When it's Lu Gong and Xu Xian's turn, we'll overturn the wooden bridge and assassinate them underwater. We'll be clean and tidy, so who will suspect us?" Lü Buwei said, "The worst thing is if Xu Xian and Xiang Shaolong strike first, making their move in the next two days. We'll suffer a great loss then."

Mo Ao said confidently, "Don't worry! As long as we don't figure out Gao Lingjun's whereabouts..." "They wouldn't dare to act against Gao Lingjun, lest they benefit him unjustly. I doubt they have the guts," said Lü Buwei. "The biggest headache right now is Zheng'er. He seems completely unaware that he is my own flesh and blood. Alas! It's all that wretched woman Zhu Ji's fault. I've urged her many times to talk to Zheng'er and make things clear, but she's always refused. She also refuses to accept the proposal to appoint me as regent. Humph! Laozi is so useless; he can't even handle such a small matter."

Guan Zhongxie said, "I think the key is still Xiang Shaolong. With him, the Empress Dowager won't have to rely entirely on Prime Minister Lü." Mo Ao chuckled and said, "I suddenly came up with a plan that can both please the Empress Dowager and make her accept the appointment of Prime Minister Lü as regent, and also keep things under wraps."

Jing and Xiang, who were eavesdropping inside the door, became very curious and thought to themselves that Mo Ao was indeed full of cunning. Lü Buwei was overjoyed and pressed for details. Mo Ao smiled and said, "As long as the Empress Dowager knows that Prime Minister Lü and Xiang Shaolong have no more grudges, her doubts will be dispelled. So once this knot in her heart is untied, she will naturally listen to Prime Minister Lü's every word." Guan Zhongxie said with slight displeasure, "Brother Mo, are you going to ask Niang Rong to pretend to marry Xiang Shaolong again?"

Mo Ao chuckled and said, "Brother Guan, are you going to compete with someone who only has three days left to live?" Then he lowered his voice and said, "Prime Minister Lü can ask the Empress Dowager to personally announce the marriage of the Third Miss and Xiang Shaolong tomorrow." "By arranging Shaolong's marriage and simultaneously appointing Lu Xiang as regent, we can combine these two matters into one. This is tantamount to explicitly telling the Empress Dowager that if she allows Lu Xiang to take this position, she will offer her most beloved daughter as a guarantee for Xiang Shaolong's safety. Under such circumstances, the

Empress Dowager will naturally give in for Xiang Shaolong's sake. Of course, we will also need Lao Du to put in some effort." Inside the room, Xiang Shaolong still didn't understand the difference between a regent and a prime minister, but he figured it was a further reduction of Xiao Pan's autonomy. Guan Zhongxie didn't object anymore. Lu Buwei said happily, "This is indeed a brilliant plan, Zhongxie! You should work on Niang Rong! This girl listens to you the most. Last time you instructed her to make a scene, and her performance was truly superb." Inside the room, Xiang Shaolong realized that Lu Niang Rong's loud outburst and disruption of the marriage agreement was a premeditated act, and he felt a surge of hatred.

Lu Niang Rong was such a person after all; he no longer needed to feel any pity for her. As Jing Jun said, playing with her was fine, tantamount to stabbing both Lü Buwei and Guan Zhongxie in the back. Lü Buwei said, "That's settled then, it's almost dawn!" Xiang Shaolong and the other dared not listen any longer and hurriedly left. Unexpectedly, by some twist of fate, they obtained such crucial information. The entire situation immediately changed.

Chapter Three: The Hunting Ceremony

Before dawn, Han Chuang was forced to drag his exhausted body to cover Xiang Shaolong and the others as they left Zuifeng Tower. On the street, the two groups parted ways. Back at the Wu residence, it was already slightly light. Xiang Shaolong and the other two dared not delay, quickly changing their clothes. Teng and Jing returned to the yamen first to prepare for the various matters of the hunting ceremony, while Xiang Shaolong rushed to the palace. On the way, they encountered Xu Xian's convoy and were invited into the carriage by Xu Xian. It turned out that Lu Gong was also in the carriage, of course, discussing how to deal with Lü Buwei. Although the two were fully dressed in hunting attire, they felt no excitement for the upcoming event. Seeing that Xiang Shaolong's eyes were bloodshot, indicating he hadn't slept all night,

Lu Gong nodded and said, "Shaolong, you've worked hard." Xiang Shaolong replied happily, "Although my body is tired, my mood is pleasant." Xu Xian asked in surprise, "Shaolong seems so confident; I wonder what new developments you've made?" Xiang Shaolong lowered his voice and recounted how he had overheard Lü Buwei and his two companions' conspiracy and secret discussions at the brothel the previous night. The two exclaimed that it was a rare and exciting tale.

Lu Gong slapped his thigh and exclaimed in admiration, "Shaolong even managed to get the poison pill stuck to his throat! It's clear that Heaven truly favors our Great Qin!" Xu Xian said, "In that case, let's follow Shaolong's suggestion and use Laozi's poison against Lü Buwei, fighting poison with poison. To be honest, Lü Buwei's ability to govern is indeed quite good. Let him be arrogant for a few more years, and when the crown prince ascends the throne, we'll deal with him properly."

Lu Gong said, "But during this period, we must firmly grasp military power and diligently cultivate talent. That way, we'll be even more adept at dealing with this guy." Xiang Shaolong said, "This humble general has a suggestion, namely Wang Jian."

Xu Xian interrupted him with a smile, "Shaolong, you don't need to remind us. We've been keeping an eye on this kid for a while now. Let him gain more experience! Alas! Wang He is getting a bit senile; it's better to let the younger generation take over." "The son will take his place." Lu Gong was clearly in high spirits, laughing and saying, "Shaolong, are you planning to take in this girl, Lü Niangrong, to infuriate Lü Buwei and that Guan Zhongxie?"

Xiang Shaolong chuckled, "They're the ones who should be having a headache over this." Xu Xian said, "But the Regent's power is immense. At that time, he'll be like the Crown Prince. Without his approval, no decree can be issued."

Xiang Shaolong said, "Minister Xu, do you remember the honorary title of 'Second Father' I mentioned? Let's use that to deceive Lü Buwei. Three days later, Mo Ao will be dead, and then it will be his turn to be thrown into chaos. Plus, Lao Du will become the Inner Secretary. Lü Buwei will only find out what's going on then." At this moment, the convoy entered the palace. All three were overjoyed, wishing the next three days could pass immediately so they could see the satisfying result of the villains getting their just desserts.

Xiang Shaolong's originally heavy and tense mood had been replaced by a relaxed and cheerful one. Good! Let me have some fun with these people, even those two girls, Lu Dan'er and Ying Ying, who've sided with Guan Zhongxie. That's what makes life more exciting!

Banners fluttered in the royal training grounds, where people and horses gathered. Those participating in the hunt were either royalty, nobles, relatives of high-ranking officials, or talents selected from various prefectures. Everyone wore light robes and leather hunting attire, riding and gathering under their respective banners. Strong men and beautiful women, a vibrant and energetic sight, numbered about five thousand. Ten thousand imperial guards stood on both sides, ready to escort the king to the hunting grounds. Lord Changping, Lord Changwen, and Guan Zhongxie were extremely busy maintaining order.

After leaving his carriage, Xiang Shaolong mounted his Swift Wind, leading his eighteen iron guards, leisurely enjoying the rising momentum of the Qin Dynasty. One of the large flags held aloft bore the character "Qi," reminding Xiang Shaolong of his "old friend" Tian Dan, which amused him. If Lü Buwei told Tian Dan that he had already dealt with him, Tian Dan would not only be overjoyed but would also be less vigilant, giving Xiang Shaolong an even greater opportunity.

Veteran generals and ministers such as Xu Xian, Lü Buwei, and Lu Gong were gathered on both sides of the reviewing stand. Distinguished guests like Tian Dan and Crown Prince Dan were also present, but Han Chuang was nowhere to be seen; he must have already set off to return home. Most striking was Ying Ying's army of women—hundreds of brightly dressed, armed young women, standing out among the men, occasionally exchanging playful banter and banter with the young men beside them, bringing a spring-like atmosphere to the scene. But the most attention-grabbing were not them, but his own beautiful wife and maid, Qin Qing. They stood to one side without banners, surrounded by dozens of guards, causing people near and far, men and women alike, to crane their necks to see their extraordinary beauty.

Ji Yanran and Qin Qing were naturally exceptional, and Wu Tingfang, Zhao Zhi, and Xiu Yi were all beauties among beauties. The Tian Zhen and Tian Feng sisters, whom even he could hardly distinguish, were also a rare sight, sparking much discussion. Xiang Shaolong, unable to suppress his passion, rode up to the women and asked with a smile, "What kind of army do you consider yourselves?" Ji Yanran and the others responded with sweet laughter. Qin Qing, however, remained indifferent, saying, "The Empress Dowager specifically instructed us to accompany her on a three-day hunt. What kind of army do you think we should be considered, Lord Xiang?"

Seeing her cold expression, Xiang Shaolong guessed that she was angered by his previous prank, or perhaps she felt contempt for him, this lecherous rogue. He sighed inwardly, smiled faintly, and didn't answer. He went to Wu Tingfang and Zhao Zhi and asked, "Where's Bao'er?" Wu Tingfang blushed with excitement and said coquettishly, "I really wanted to take him hunting, but I was afraid he wouldn't be able to withstand the cold, so he had to stay with Qing-jie and be cared for by his wet nurse."

Zhao Zhi said, "Xiang Lang! Let me introduce you to two new wet nurses, okay?" The Tian sisters behind him immediately blushed, too shy to speak. Just as Xiang Shaolong's heart was burning with desire and his mind was filled with fantasies, Xiu Yi approached from horseback and said, "Xiang Lang! Would you like to come to our tent tonight? Everyone has been missing you terribly!" Xiang Shaolong's appetite was whetted, and he quickly nodded in agreement.

At this moment, the drums sounded urgently, and Xiao Pan and Zhu Ji, surrounded by guards, ascended the reviewing stand. The entire audience immediately stood at attention and saluted, shouting "Long live the King!" The hunt, amidst everyone's anticipation, finally began. The hunting party stretched for over ten miles, a magnificent sight. Cavalry guarded the high ground along the route, maintaining tight security.

To display the nation's martial spirit, Xiao Pan and Zhu Ji rode on horseback, led by imperial guards. Ministers such as Lü Buwei, Xu Xian, Lu Gong, Wang Wan, and Cai Ze accompanied Xiao Pan and Zhu Ji. After Xiang Shaolong had accompanied Wu Tingfang and the others for a while, Li Shi deliberately came to find him. The two left the main road and rode side-by-side along the roadside. Li Si said in a low voice, "Every time I see Grand Tutor Qin, I feel she is more beautiful than Lady Ji; but when I see Lady Ji, I feel Qin Qing is not as good as her. Now that I can finally see them at the same time, I understand what it means to have different charms, like spring orchids and autumn chrysanthemums."

Xiang Shaolong said, "Brother Li is in a very good mood today!" Li Si shook his head and said, "It's just making the best of a bad situation! These three days of hunting have been tense on the surface but dangerous on the inside. How could I be in a good mood?"

After carefully looking at Xiang Shaolong for a while, he continued, "Brother Xiang must have slept poorly last night. Your eyes are bloodshot and your voice is hoarse. It's worrying." Xiang Shaolong smiled bitterly, "I didn't sleep at all. How can I say whether I slept well or not? As for my hoarse voice, it's because my throat was scratched. But if I hadn't had this injury, I would have lost my life." He then briefly recounted the thrilling and dramatic events of the previous night.

Li Si was beaming with delight, exclaiming excitedly, "I must tell the Crown Prince later! Ah! I admire Brother Xiang more and more!" He continued, "No wonder when Lü Buwei came to inform the Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince that he wanted to marry his daughter to Brother Xiang and asked them to make the decision. The Empress Dowager was naturally pleased, but the Crown Prince and I were quite puzzled. It turns out there was such a subtle situation involved. Hey! Brother Xiang, you wouldn't refuse, would you?"

Xiang Shaolong chuckled and said, "Do you think I would?" The two looked at each other and burst into laughter. Li Si said, "Our Qin Dynasty has always had the custom of announcing personnel arrangements and transfers, or promoting new people, during the hunting season. Brother Xiang's suggestion to the Crown Prince to appoint Lü Buwei as his regent is indeed brilliant. It can both silence him and make him more suspicious. The Crown Prince should use this method to deal with the Empress Dowager's pressure to appoint Lü Buwei as regent again."

At this moment, Xiang Shaolong caught a glimpse of Guan Zhongxie riding up and quickly changed the subject to something unimportant. Although Guan Zhongxie hadn't slept all night, he was much more energetic than Xiang Shaolong. He strode confidently to Xiang Shaolong's other side, first greeting Li Si and casually saying, "Since Lord Li entered the palace to serve the Crown Prince, we've had few opportunities to get together. Let's take advantage of these three days to have a good get-together." Xiang Shaolong's heart stirred. He secretly thought that if Lü Buwei wanted to completely control Xiaopan, he needed someone like Mo Ao to replace Li Si. Therefore, Li Si would also be one of Lü Buwei's targets this time. Why hadn't he thought of this before?

Ultimately, it was because his side lacked a strategist as clear-headed as Mo Ao. Li Si was the best candidate, but he was too busy assisting Xiaopan with countless affairs to spare. Thinking of this, he couldn't help but think of Ji Yanran, and inwardly cursed himself for having a wise and capable wife, yet not knowing how to consult her on everything and let her demonstrate her abilities. Guan Zhongxie's voice rang in his ears: "Why is Lord Xiang so distracted?" Xiang Shaolong, feeling mischievous, winked at Li Si and said: "Lord Guan, please allow me a moment to speak."

Li Si understood somewhat, excused himself, and returned to his ranks. Guan Zhongxie asked in surprise, "What do you wish to say to me, Lord Xiang?" Xiang Shaolong sighed, "Just now, Envoy Li told me that Prime Minister Lü intends to marry the Third Miss to me, and the Empress Dowager might officially announce it today. But I know that the Third Miss is in love with Brother Guan. To be frank, regardless of our future stances, I sincerely admire Brother Guan's magnanimity, courage, and swordsmanship. I will not hold it against Brother Guan if we become enemies in the future due to differing stances; we should either fight each other openly. Therefore, if Brother Guan speaks, I, Xiang Shaolong, will immediately go to the Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince to express my stance, daring not to ruin the Third Miss's future." Guan Zhongxie

's eyes, which had been flashing with a fierce light, fell silent after hearing this, his face showing a complex expression. Xiang Shaolong also admired him, because he could have easily denied it outright, and he would have been powerless against him. But that would have made him appear to be a despicable liar. The current situation is so delicate that no one except a few insiders understands it. In truth, everyone knows that the goal is to kill the other; it's an open secret.

In Guan Zhongxie's view, Xiang Shaolong is already halfway to his doom, beyond anyone's help, though Xiang Shaolong himself probably thinks he's escaped death. Therefore, Xiang Shaolong's declaration of his intentions clearly shows he doesn't want to take advantage of Lü Niangrong, and also demonstrates that Xiang Shaolong is a true hero who wouldn't use Lü Niangrong to attack him after he'd harmed him with a poisonous scheme. How could Guan Zhongxie be without a guilty conscience? Xiang Shaolong, however, secretly chuckled, awaiting the reaction of his strongest opponent.

Guan Zhongxie suddenly gave a bitter laugh and said, "I, Guan Zhongxie, don't want to waste time on empty words. However, the matter of the Third Miss marrying Brother Xiang is not something I can decide, nor should it be ruined because of me. There are always gains and losses; that's life. The Third Miss is still young and capricious, but with Lord Xiang's abilities, he can surely persuade her to obey willingly. Lord Xiang, please don't trouble yourself with this anymore." He apologized and rode away.

Xiang Shaolong sighed inwardly. Tu Xian was right; Guan Zhongxie was never a true gentleman. Even towards him, whom he considered a certain death, he wouldn't utter a single sincere word, showing how heartless he was. But this was exactly what he had expected. Three days later, when he, Xiang Shaolong, was still alive, and Lü Niangrong had become his betrothed, and it was Guan Zhongxie who persuaded Lü Niangrong to accept this arrangement, his regret would then deal him a severe psychological blow.

Back then, he had snatched Wu Tingfang and Zhao Ya from his junior brother Lian Jin, causing Lian Jin to lose his composure and become vulnerable to his attacks. Unexpectedly, the same situation would repeat itself with Guan Zhongxie. What drastic actions would he take then? Thinking of this, he hurried to catch up with Ji Yanran so he could explain everything to her.

Qin Qing, Ji Yanran, and the other women were walking happily with Empress Dowager Zhu Ji, and a little ahead was Xiao Pan and Lü Buwei's group. Xiang Shaolong, afraid of seeing Zhu Ji, could only follow behind, looking for an opportunity. Someone called out, "Lord Xiang!" Xiang Shaolong turned his head and saw Lao Du leave the eunuchs' group and respectfully bow to him. After returning the greeting, Xiang Shaolong said happily, "Lord Lao, you look radiant; your official career must be flourishing."

Lao Du lowered his voice and said, "It's all thanks to Lord Xiang's kindness and patronage. The Crown Prince even stated that it was Lord Xiang who wholeheartedly recommended me." Then, excitedly, he said, "The Crown Prince will officially appoint me as the Grand Secretary in the next couple of days. There will be many opportunities to cooperate with Lord Xiang in the future!"

Xiang Shaolong knew that his gratitude was genuine. For Lao Du, all he wanted was power and wealth; he didn't care who he served. He had listened to Lü Buwei before only to gain opportunities for advancement. For someone as cold-hearted and ruthless as a beast, why would he care about Lü Buwei's past favors? Xiang Shaolong asked in a low voice, "Does Prime Minister Lü know about this?" Lao Du said indignantly, "He only found out yesterday and even threw a tantrum in front of the Empress Dowager. Fortunately, the Empress Dowager rebuked him."

Xiang Shaolong feigned surprise and said, "Brother Lao has been promoted and made a fortune, he should be happy, why would he have any reason to object?" Lao Du said fiercely, "Of course he won't say he objects to me becoming the Inner Historian, he'll only say that I entered the palace because of a crime, and now I've been promoted several ranks, which will surely cause gossip. Heh! In the end, isn't he just hoping I'll be a servant for the rest of my life?"

Xiang Shaolong was secretly delighted, knowing that the conflict between him and Lü Buwei had finally become obvious, and said seriously, "Brother Lao, don't worry, I've already made arrangements for you with Prime Minister Xu and the General, I guarantee they will support you." Lao Du stared in disbelief and said, "Heh! This...this..." He couldn't say a word.

Xiang Shaolong suppressed a laugh and said in a deep voice, "Lü Buwei is that kind of person. The higher your rank, the more the Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince value you, and the more jealous he becomes. But Brother Lao, you can rest assured for now. As long as he can't get rid of me, Xiang Shaolong, he won't have time to deal with you." Lao Du shuddered, a thoughtful expression on his face. At this moment, Tian Zhen saw him and met him later. Xiang Shaolong patted Lao Du on the shoulder before going to greet him. The seed of Lao Du's plan to deal with Lü Buwei had finally sprouted.

Chapter Four: The Talented Woman Displays Her

Power. On the west bank of the Jing River, the camps stretched as far as the eye could see, banners like a sea. Xiang Shaolong, Ji Yanran, Wu Tingfang, Zhao Zhi, and the Tian sisters stood on the flat-topped hill where the royal camp was located, surveying the surrounding terrain. Although this trip was not a war, the marching and setting up of the camp were all in accordance with military regulations and tactics. Of the six states, the Qin people valued martial prowess the most. Men and women alike practiced martial arts from a young age, and were intimately familiar with military formations and tactics.

Because the terrain here was flat, with vast plains and no natural defenses, a square camp was established. The wooden stockade where Xiao Pan held the position served as the central army, essentially the command headquarters. Within the stockade were nearly twenty tents, with Xiao Pan and Zhu Ji's tents in the center. The other tents housed royal attendants, or individuals of special status and close ties to the royal family, such as Qin Qing. Around the wooden stockade, the tents on either side of the flat-topped hill were called the Left and Right Guards, respectively led by Lord Changping and Lord Changwen, and were mobile forces directly under Xiao Pan's control, responsible for the security of the central army.

The rest of the troops were divided into four armies—east, west, south, and north—arranged in a square formation, surrounding the central army like stars around the moon, acting as its shield. As for Xiang Shaolong's cavalry, they were stationed at a distance, remotely protecting the entire square camp, somewhat like border sentries. Besides the central army, the tents were arranged in groups of ten, each separated by walkways wide enough for eight horses to gallop abreast. At the center of each army camp, large open areas were designated as horse stables and plazas for practicing archery and horsemanship. Hunters could stretch their limbs, compete in horsemanship, archery, and swordsmanship—a lively scene, somewhat like a recreational event.

With more than two hours until the evening hunt, everyone was in high spirits, gathered in the six large plazas for playful activities. The main plaza below the royal camp became the domain of Ying Ying and her daughters' army. Young noblemen seeking to woo these capricious Qin women flocked here, making it far more bustling than any other archery range. The sounds of horses neighing and men shouting echoed above the more than three thousand tents.

A long wind blew, causing flags to flutter, further enhancing the military atmosphere. Ji Yanran, already aware of all the recent events, smiled and said, "When Lord Gaoling attacks, he will surely first have the king's wooden stockade and the tents furthest from the river burned. Since the wind has been blowing from the southeast recently, when the fire and smoke approach, we will have no choice but to cross the river to the north bank of the Jing River to escape." Xiang Shaolong and the women felt a chill as they looked at the two wooden bridges spanning the Jing River. If these two bridges were destroyed, the consequences would be unimaginable.

Even if the bridges remained, it wouldn't be enough for so many people to cross at once, so those who couldn't reach the bridges would have to swim to the other side. In that chaotic situation, it wouldn't be difficult for Lü Buwei to assassinate a few people. It was foreseeable that Guan Zhongxie would "show great power and composure" to protect Zhu Ji and Xiao Pan as they retreated from the bridge, while Xiang Shaolong would "die from poison." Afterwards, Guan Zhongxie would even "make a great contribution." Mo Ao's treacherous plan was indeed flawless.

In this season of continuous spring rain, setting fire is no easy task, but Lord Gaoling is an internal traitor, and his camp is located in a camp southeast of the king's camp. Casually tampering with it would be a piece of cake, so this method is indeed feasible. Especially since it's the main event of the hunt, most people are hunting at Xishou Mountain at night, their guard is at its weakest, making it the perfect time to raid the camp. If Lord Changping and his brothers are both killed, Lü Buwei might seize command of the Imperial Guards.

Xiang Shaolong exhaled a breath of cool air and said, "Yanran is truly amazing. She saw through Lord Gaoling's strategy at a glance. So, as long as we keep a close watch and see when Lord Gaoling or Lü Buwei's men smear oil or something similar on the camp, we'll know when they're about to launch their attack." Ji Yanran, pleased with her husband's praise, returned his compliment with a sweet smile. The sound of hooves rang out, and Changwenjun rode up, shouting, "Let's go to the archery range downstairs and join the fun!"

The women turned to look at him, who was glaring at Ji Yanran and the women with an adoring and infatuated expression, and said happily, "Greetings, ladies! Alas! I'm so jealous of Shaolong that it almost killed me." Wu Tingfang chuckled, her smile more radiant than any flower, and asked, "Changwenjun, are you done with your work?"

Changwenjun feigned an expression of being overwhelmed with work. "The Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince have just settled in," said Chang Wenjun. "Grand Tutor Qin was summoned by the Empress Dowager for a talk, and she instructed me to inform all the ladies." Xiang Shaolong yawned and said, "Go join the fun! I want to go back to camp and get a good night's sleep."

Chang Wenjun laughed heartily, spurred her horse between Xiang Shaolong and Ji Yanran, reached out and grabbed Xiang Shaolong's reins, forcefully pulling him down the slope, calling to the women, "Let's go play!" The women, seeing Xiang Shaolong's helpless expression as he was pulled down, giggled and spurred their horses to chase after him.

With a "whoosh!" three powerful arrows burst forth, hitting the bullseye of the target three hundred paces away. The nearly one thousand men and women watching erupted in cheers. Ying Ying, beaming with pride, surveyed the entire arena and exclaimed, "Who's next?" The men, though eager to try, were hesitant due to the impressive archery skills displayed before them. A misstep would be humiliating, and for a moment, no one dared to answer. Guan Zhongxie laughed heartily, "With our Daughter Army's chief archer unleashing her divine arrow, who dares to embarrass themselves?"

Ying Ying, flattered by his praise, gave him a flirtatious wink, which aroused jealousy among the young men, but none dared to take the risk. Xiang Shaolong, having just dismounted, gasped upon seeing Ying Ying's formidable archery. He was confident he could hit the bullseye, but firing three arrows in quick succession was a different story. No wonder Ying Ying was so arrogant. The Daughter Army members all showed disdain for Xiang Shaolong, but upon seeing Ji Yanran, they all displayed a mixture of envy and jealousy.

Lu Dan'er stepped forward from the crowd, calling out, "Commander Xiang, is your leg injury healed? I've heard your swordsmanship in blocking arrows is unparalleled; I wonder how your archery skills are?" Nearly a thousand gazes immediately fell on Xiang Shaolong, then shifted to Ji Yanran beside him. Ji Yanran, of course, knew that archery was not Xiang Shaolong's forte, and understood that the Qin people valued martial arts; if Xiang Shaolong feigned injury to remain out of the game, it would greatly damage his image. With a charming laugh, she removed her outer robe, revealing a simple white, tight-fitting outfit underneath. She gracefully stepped to the center of the arena and said in a voice more beautiful than celestial music, "May I try first?"

Her languid, seemingly indifferent demeanor, coupled with her captivating beauty, bewitched both men and women. After she finished speaking, the men, who had been staring at her exquisite, curvaceous, and flawlessly beautiful figure, finally cheered. Ying Ying glared fiercely at Ji Yanran before reluctantly handing her the powerful bow. Seeing her assume a horse stance, Ji Yanran knew exactly what was going on. With a swift and graceful movement, she grabbed one end of the bow and, with a deft twist, before Ying Ying could even exert any force, the bow was already in the hands of this beautiful and talented woman, whom she herself felt inferior to.

Even Guan Zhongxie showed surprise this time. Chang Wenjun, standing beside Xiang Shaolong, whispered, "It'll be good to curb my sister's arrogance!" Ying Ying, not expecting Ji Yanran to see through her scheme, retreated hastily to Lu Dan'er's side.

Two cavalrymen rushed out and presented Ji Yanran with long arrows. Ji Yanran maintained her nonchalant, charming demeanor, a smile that could captivate the world playing on her lips. With a target three hundred paces away on her back, she accepted the three long arrows and held them between her fingers. The entire arena fell silent. Suddenly, Ji Yanran spun around like a whirlwind, and to everyone's astonishment, three powerful arrows burst forth in quick succession, shooting towards the target like shooting stars. When she fired the first arrow, she was still facing away from the target, but with a backhand shot; it wasn't until the third arrow that she was facing it directly.

With a resounding "thud!", the first arrow struck the bullseye, followed by two more arrows hitting the very tip of the first. The skill was so astonishing that no one could believe their eyes. It instantly surpassed Ying Ying's archery skills. The entire arena erupted in thunderous applause that lasted for a long time. Ji Yanran, filled with resentment towards Ying Ying and Lu Dan'er for "bullying" her husband, didn't even glance at them. After bowing to the onlookers, she returned in triumph. Xiang Shaolong, however, knew that this "grudge" was deepening.

At this moment, a guard reported that the Crown Prince wished to summon Xiang Shaolong. As he entered the gate of the wooden fortress, a group of female generals rode up from behind. Leading them was none other than Lü Niangrong, the others being her personal guards. When Lü Niangrong saw him, her expression was complex, her small mouth pouting proudly. She deliberately spurred her horse and whirled past Xiang Shaolong like a whirlwind. Xiang Shaolong couldn't help but feel contempt for her. This woman, knowing she had "swallowed a poisoned pill," showed no sympathy whatsoever. Like father, like daughter; she was no better. Humph! She'd learn her lesson soon enough.

Loud shouts and cheers echoed from the open space in front of the main camp. It turned out Xiao Pan was practicing archery, with Lü Buwei, Xu Xian, Lu Gong, Changping Jun, and other ministers and generals cheering him on. Seeing him arrive, Li Si moved to his side and said, "It's time!" Xiang Shaolong knew Li Si was referring to the blood test to "disown" him. Seeing Li Si's tense expression, he understood he was worried that Xiao Pan might actually be Lü Buwei's son, which would be disastrous. Xiang Shaolong squeezed next to Lu Gong and Xu Xian, who were standing at the back, took out the blood-drawing needle, and winked at them. Their breathing immediately became heavy.

Xiao Pan shot more than ten arrows, four of which hit the bullseye, and the rest landed near it, exceeding his usual level. No wonder the ministers cheered. In fact, everyone was already very happy as long as he hit the target. When Wang Ben presented him with another arrow, Xiao Pan saw Xiang Shaolong, turned around, and excitedly walked over, holding his large bow, saying happily, "Grand Tutor! My performance was not bad, was it?" Xiang Shaolong knew that he was creating an opportunity for him to draw blood, so he bowed and said, "If the Crown Prince used his hands more and his eyes less, his performance would be even better." Xiao

Pan asked in surprise, "Archery is all about eyesight, what does it mean to use your hands more?" At this time, not only Xiao Pan was puzzled, but everyone else also did not understand what Xiang Shaolong was talking about, and their attention was focused on him. Lü Niangrong and Mo Ao, who were next to Lü Buwei, were staring at him fiercely. Xiang Shaolong respectfully asked Xiao Pan to turn around. Under the guise of correcting his posture, he gently pricked the vein on the side of Xiao Pan's neck with the needle tip. Due to the circulation of blood and qi after Xiao Pan's movement, a spurt of blood immediately flowed out and into the small sac at the end of the needle. Since Xu Xian, Lu Gong, and Changping Jun were behind him, the three of them could see it clearly, but the others could not.

Xiao Pan sighed and touched the back of his neck, deliberately saying, "There's a mosquito!" Xiang Shaolong shoved the needle into Xu Xian's hand and said, "Your Highness, do not be distracted. In archery, the hand and eye must work together, but aiming with the hand is better than aiming with the eye. This is because after the eye sees the target, it must notify the mind, and then the mind directs the hand, which involves many steps. But if you aim with your hand, there are fewer of these obstacles. Look!" He casually pulled out five flying needles and hurled them like lightning at the target two hundred paces away.

To everyone's astonishment, he threw needles instead of shooting arrows. Five needles flew in a row, striking the target perfectly, the middle one hitting the bullseye. Each needle was spaced an inch apart, with flawless precision. Even Xiang Shaolong hadn't dreamed of such a result. Although his needle-throwing skill was renowned, this was the first time anyone had witnessed it. Just the fact that he could achieve such incredible accuracy from two hundred paces away showed that he not only possessed astonishing strength but also a unique technique; otherwise, it would have been impossible.

Lü Buwei and his daughter, along with Mo Ao, all showed expressions of shock. Only then did the crowd cheer and applaud. Lü Buwei and Mo Ao exchanged a smile, clearly remembering that Xiang Shaolong's life was nearing its end, and no matter how skilled he was, there was no need to worry. Xiao Wangben excitedly tried to retrieve the flying needles to return to Xiang Shaolong, but Xiao Pan stopped him, saying, "Leave the needles on the target. I want to take them back to the palace as a souvenir. Let them remain as they are for the next three days." Xiao Pan looked admiringly at him and said, "No wonder the Grand Tutor's flying needles are so fast and accurate; it turns out he throws them by feel."

Although Xiang Shaolong had become the Commander of the Cavalry, he still held the position of Grand Tutor, so he could instruct Xiao Pan, the crown prince. While secretly observing Lü Buwei and Mo Ao, Xiang Shaolong also paid attention to Lü Niangrong. He noticed that the look of surprise in her eyes lingered for a long time, clearly stunned by his brilliant display of skill in his moment of carelessness. To be honest, if he were to deliberately throw again, he would have no confidence at all. In truth, when he practiced with needles, he usually aimed with his eyes; only just now had he aimed with his hand.

Lu Gong exclaimed, "Shaolong's flying needle technique is truly unprecedented and unparalleled." Lü Buwei chuckled, "Rong'er! Now you should know Lord Xiang's skills." Lü Niangrong lowered her pretty face to avoid revealing her conflicted and complex expression.

Xiao Pan seized the opportunity, saying, "Grand Tutor, please come to my tent for a talk!" He then led Li Si back to the main camp. Xiang Shaolong wanted to follow, but Lu Gong pulled him back, saying, "After you've met the Crown Prince, come to my tent." He then winked at him.

Xiang Shaolong was unsure whether he had already obtained Lü Buwei's drop of blood or if there was something else to discuss, and went off with these questions in mind. Inside the royal tent, Xiao Pan sighed, "Grand Tutor, you must pass on your flying needle technique to me." Li Si also said, "No wonder Lord Xiang has been able to escape danger time and again. It's no fluke. These flying needles are harder to dodge than crossbow bolts, let alone parry with a sword."

Xiang Shaolong sat down on the thick, soft carpet and said with a wry smile, "Your Highness and Lord Li, there's no need to praise me. Last night, I just barely escaped death, and it was all by luck." Under Xiao Pan's surprised questioning, Xiang Shaolong recounted what had happened the previous night. Upon hearing of Gao Ling's rebellion and Lü Buwei's conspiracy, Xiao Pan flew into a rage, exclaiming, "These two are incredibly audacious! What do they think I am?"

Li Si quickly replied, "Your Highness, please calm down. Lord Xiang will surely have a proper way to handle this matter." Xiao Pan looked at Xiang Shaolong, who nodded and said, "Now that we know when Gao Ling's rebels attacked the camp, I can mobilize troops and wipe them out in one fell swoop, rendering them utterly useless. As for the camp, I hope Your Highness will personally lead the troops and deploy them to deal with Gao Ling..." "If all the men are captured, and Lü Buwei is completely subdued, then after showing off your skills, will anyone dare to disregard the Crown Prince?"

These words were exactly what Xiao Pan, the future Qin Shi Huang, wanted. He loved to show off his abilities, so he nodded and said, "Lord Xiang is indeed confident. What is your plan?" Xiang Shaolong said, "This matter needs to be determined based on accurate intelligence and the situation at the time. I will keep in touch with Lord Li and, after understanding the situation, let the Crown Prince make the decision." Then he secretly winked at him.

Xiao Pan understood immediately, knowing that Xiang Shaolong would present the detailed plan, and he would then give the orders. Overjoyed, his face flushed with excitement, he nodded and said, "Let's do as Xiang Qingjia requests!" He continued, "Today, the Empress Dowager told me that Lü Buwei wants to give his most beloved third daughter to Xiang Qingjia. I thought Lü Buwei had changed his ways, but it turns out there's such a ruthless conspiracy involved. Ha! Mo Ao is about to die and still doesn't know it. It's hilarious!"

Li Si and Xiang Shaolong, finding his story amusing and knowing he was in a great mood, couldn't help but laugh along with him. At this moment, the gatekeeper announced that Lao Du was requesting an audience. The three men quickly stopped laughing and watched as Lao Du entered and knelt to report, "The Empress Dowager requests the Crown Prince's presence." Xiao Pan's eyes flashed with disdain as he said, "Understood! Head eunuch, please return. I will be there immediately."

After Lao Du left the tent, Xiao Pan lowered his voice and asked, "Is Minister Xiang preparing to marry Lü Buwei's precious daughter?" Xiang Shaolong sneered, "If Lü Buwei sees that I am not dead, he will never marry his daughter to me. But let him worry about this."

Xiao Pan understood his meaning and nodded, saying, "I know what to do!" He stood up. Xiang and Li quickly knelt on the ground. Xiao Pan stepped forward to help Xiang Shaolong up and whispered in his ear, "Master, be careful. If anything happens to you, this world will be devoid of joy." Then he left.

Chapter Five: How Could It Be Heartless?

The drop of blood from the small plate flowed back from the end of the sac, dripping through the needle hole into the medicinal liquid in the bowl. Then, Xu Xian took out the sac containing Lü Buwei's blood sample, brought it to the rim of the bowl, but did not immediately drip the blood. Everyone watched as the drop of blood from the small plate clumped together in the medicinal liquid, their expressions tense. In Lu Gong's tent, more than ten people were crammed together, all highly respected figures in the military. Besides Lu Gong and Xu Xian, there were Wang Ling, Jia Gongcheng, the royal family's Yunyang Jun Ying Ao, and Yiqu Jun Ying Lou, among others. It was clear that whether the small plate was Lü Buwei's child would greatly influence whether the military supported him.

Xiang Shaolong squeezed through the crowd and asked, "How did you get this drop of blood from Lü Buwei?" Yunyang Jun Ying Ao replied, "I dragged him out to shoot arrows, while Lord Lu and General Wang pretended to be playing a game. He didn't even know what was going on with the blood."

Lord Lu, having no interest in listening to anyone, said in a deep voice, "Xu Xian!" Xu Xian gritted his teeth and dripped the blood into the water. The tent fell silent; everyone's heart was in their throats, and they could hardly breathe. The drop of blood fell into the water, creating a ripple, and then touched the original pool of blood on Xiao Pan. As if by miracle, the two pools of blood immediately separated, clearly distinct, like water from a well. The crowd cheered. Xiang Shaolong suddenly felt as light as a feather. The future was so terrifying; he knew Xiao Pan would definitely overcome this hurdle, but being caught in the situation, he couldn't help himself.

In Xiang Shaolong's private tent, as Ji Yanran and the other women carefully cleaned his wounds and changed his dressings, Teng Yi returned and sat down, beaming, "We've found Gao Lingjun's men!" Xiang Shaolong exclaimed joyfully, "Where are they?"

Teng Yi seemed to be in a very good mood, pulling out a silk scroll from his robes as he chuckled, "The Qin people's so-called hunting is nothing but a farce for someone like me who's been hunting for over ten years. Even the tigers and wolves within a hundred miles would be scared away." Xiang Shaolong helped him unfold the scroll and laughed, "Why didn't you tell me sooner, Second Brother? Even the tigers were scared away! I would have prepared a large quantity of tiger ears and sold them at ten times the price, ensuring these amateur hunters wouldn't return empty-handed. I guarantee there would be more demand than supply, and I'd make a fortune!"

Ji Yanran and the other women immediately burst into laughter that shook the entire camp. Teng Yi burst into laughter, exclaiming, "Amateur hunter! That's certainly a strange description." Xiang Shaolong, panting, asked, "Which cave are Gao Lingjun's men hiding in?"

Teng Yi was stunned. "Third Brother actually stumbled upon the right one by accident." Pointing to a mountain range about fifty li from the camp on the map, he continued, "This mountain is densely forested, located upstream of the Jing River, with seven caves. The locals call it 'Seven Caves in a Row.' Gao Lingjun is truly thoughtful. Even if we know they're hiding there, we can't possibly find them. We only know they're there, but we can't determine how many of them there are."

Wu Tingfang innocently said, "Two..." "Brother, you're exaggerating. If we sealed off the entire mountain area and then set fire to the forest, wouldn't that force them out?" Xiang Shaolong loved seeing Wu Tingfang's girlish charm and smiled. "The spring fog is heavy and damp. Trying to burn down the forest at this time would be harder than climbing to heaven, oh!"

Grabbing Wu Tingfang's small fist as she threw it, he still retorted, "Unless it's Miss Wu's nameless anger that's being burned, then that's a different story." Ji Yanran chuckled. "Our husband has come back from the dead, and he's become so playful."

Zhao Zhi leaned over Wu Tingfang's back, helping her pull her small fist away from Xiang Shaolong's clutches. Teng Yi peered over to check the healing progress of his wounds, saying, "However, if they leave the Seven Linked Acupoints, they will never escape our Jing family hunters. Heh! I think we should send out our young men and give them more opportunities to gain practical experience."

Xiang Shaolong reached out and pressed Teng Yi's shoulder, laughing, "This matter should be decided by Second Brother. Fortunately, Du Bi isn't in Xianyang, otherwise the situation would be even more complicated. Heh! In any case, in Lü Buwei's eyes, I'm just someone who has two and a half days left to live. No matter what I do in these two and a half days, he will endure it for a while and pretend to be kind so that no one suspects that he harmed me. More importantly, he has to keep it from Zhu Ji. Under these circumstances, if I don't go looking for trouble, I'll be letting down the real dead ghost Mo." "This is the vicious scheme Mo Ao devised."

Zhao Zhizheng was helping Ji Yanran kneel on the mat to bandage his wound when she heard this and scolded, "Xiang Lang, your leg injury hasn't healed yet, we sisters won't allow you to act recklessly." Xiang Shaolong pretended to be surprised and said, "Who said I was going to fight someone?" Xiu Yi said with a charming smile, "You're not thinking of seducing some beauty again, are you?"

Ji Yanran laughed and said, "Yi-mei, Zhi-mei, he's playing you! Quickly attack him and see if he'll act recklessly." Just as they were making a fuss, a voice came from the tent door and announced, "Grand Tutor Qin has arrived!"

Xiang Shaolong thought of Qin Qing's peerless beauty. In that instant, he realized the reason why everyone was so happy today was that they had finally succeeded in scheming against Mo Ao. As long as this person is not eliminated, they will not have a good life. After successfully placing the poison pill back into his throat, they immediately felt a great sense of relief, and even the usually serious Teng Yi began to joke and laugh. However, nothing is absolute; as long as Mo Ao was still alive, they had to be careful not to let the other side see through their disguise.

At this moment, the Tian sisters, Tian Zhen and Tian Feng, had just finished tidying Xiang Shaolong's clothes when Qin Qing, with a sullen face, entered the tent. Since they had been dating Qin Qing, this was the first time this beautiful woman had come to Xiang Shaolong's "place," and he felt a rather strange sensation. However, judging from her appearance, it seemed that something was amiss. Wu Tingfang exclaimed, "Sister Qing, why didn't you come sooner? We just had a great battle!" Ji Yanran, with her keen observation, frowned and asked, "What's on your mind, Sister Qing?" Teng Yi, after greeting Qin Qing, took the opportunity to leave.

Qin Qing sat down opposite Ji Yanran and said softly, "I'd like to say a few words to your husbands." The women were slightly taken aback. Ji Yanran stood up gracefully and said, "It's almost time to cross the river. We'll prepare the horses outside and wait for you." After speaking, she led Wu Tingfang, Zhao Zhi, Xiuyi, and the Tian sisters out of the tent.

Xiang Shaolong looked at Qin Qing in surprise and asked, "What has made the Grand Tutor so unhappy?" Qin Qing glared at him coldly and said, "How could Qin Qing dare to be unhappy? I should congratulate Lord Xiang on marrying Lü Buwei's beautiful daughter!"

Only then did Xiang Shaolong realize what was going on and secretly rejoiced that she was jealous. He chuckled and said, "Grand Tutor Qin, you misunderstand. The matter is complicated. Lü Buwei doesn't want to marry his daughter to me, and I won't take such a woman as my wife." Qin Qing asked in astonishment, "Then why did the Empress Dowager tell me that Lü Buwei asked her to announce your marriage, and that you agreed?" Xiang Shaolong smiled at her and said softly, "It's a long story. Grand Tutor Qin, can you trust me to come here? You can learn the whole story from Yanran after the hunt.

" Qin Qing, her pretty face tense, said unhappily, "Why does Lord Xiang always speak so hesitantly, as if he wants to say something but then stops himself, always hiding his true feelings? Who do you take Qin Qing for?" Xiang Shaolong hadn't meant anything by it, but the listener, who was paying attention, suddenly blurted out, "What does Grand Tutor Qin hope to be to me, Xiang Shaolong?"

Qin Qing's cheeks immediately flushed red, and she retorted angrily, "Does Lord Xiang intend to be rude to Qin Qing again?" Xiang Shaolong immediately recalled... The intoxicating feeling of holding her slender waist made him cough lightly and say, "How dare Xiang Shaolong be so bold?"

Seeing his gaze linger on her waist, Qin Qing felt even more ashamed, lowering her head and biting her lip, "Will you tell me or not?" Xiang Shaolong, seeing her coquettish manner towards her lover, felt a surge of warmth in his heart. He moved closer, bringing his lips to her delicate ear, savoring the penetrating fragrance of her hair, and softly whispered... He said, "This is a great secret, not to be told to just two ears, so please don't blame me for speaking to you like this

, Grand Tutor Qin." Qin Qing's delicate body trembled slightly, even her ears turned red, and she trembled as if her little ears were itchy, asking, "Does Lord Xiang know what he is doing?" This was the first time Qin Qing hadn't avoided him, and Xiang Shaolong was greatly stimulated. He no longer remembered that Qin Qing was a beauty who couldn't be touched, and teased, "Then should I tell you or not?"

Qin Qing didn't dare to look at him and nodded slightly. Xiang Shaolong suppressed the urge to kiss her earlobe, but couldn't help staring at her rapidly heaving chest, and said softly, "Because Lü Buwei has already had someone poison me, and estimates that I won't live more than two days, that's why he betrothed his daughter to me and announced it to the world. That way, if something happens to me, no one will suspect him, at least we can deceive the Empress Dowager." Qin Qing was shocked, her pretty face turned pale, and she turned her head away without thinking, almost touching his lips.

Xiang Shaolong recoiled in fright, then said with a hint of regret, "I'm sorry to have startled you, Grand Tutor Qin. Luckily, I saw through his scheme and thwarted his poisoning method. But Lü Buwei is completely unaware of this and still wants to marry his daughter to me. He'll definitely try every means to break off the engagement later, and then the Empress Dowager will know he's lying to her. That's why I pretended to agree." Qin Qing breathed a sigh of relief, clutching her chest with lingering fear, and said, "You almost scared me to death." Her pretty face flushed red , and she looked incredibly charming.

Xiang Shaolong said happily, "Thank you for your concern, Grand Tutor Qin." Although Qin Qing's blush hadn't faded, her expression returned to normal. She smiled gently and said, "Consider it a mistake on my part this time! It evens out with your earlier attempt to be rude to me. But you mustn't do it again. Ugh! It's making my ears itch."

Xiang Shaolong, completely captivated, smiled and nodded, saying, "Since Grand Tutor Qin has clearly stated that I am not allowed to be disrespectful to you, I will consider it and tell you my decision later, okay? However, this is a huge secret and cannot be told to just anyone." Qin Qing chuckled, gave him a charmingly glaring look, and gracefully stood up, saying, "You! I really can't do anything with you."

Xiang Shaolong stood up with her, spreading his hands, saying, "I'll be grateful if Grand Tutor Qin doesn't get angry with me all the time." Qin Qing sighed softly, "Blame yourself! You never explain anything to Qin Qing clearly, and you won't tell unless you're forced. Oh, right! The matter of you throwing five needles has already spread throughout the military camp, everyone knows it. When I came out of the Empress Dowager's tent, I saw Guan Zhongxie and Ying Ying studying the flying needles on the target." Then she lowered her head and said softly, "Lord Xiang, could you please send me a flying needle?" "Where's the needle for Qin Qing?"

Without hesitation, Xiang Shaolong reached into his waist and pulled out a flying needle. He naturally took her delicate, untouchable hand and placed it in her palm, saying softly, "Please forgive my rudeness one more time, okay?" Caught off guard, Qin Qing was greatly embarrassed and pulled her hand back, scolding, "You..."

Xiang Shaolong pressed his fingers to his lips, making a shushing gesture, and then pointed outside, indicating that he was afraid someone would hear, before laughing, "This is the price for not wanting me, Xiang Shaolong, to treat Grand Tutor Qin as an outsider. From now on, I'll come to you whenever I have time to talk about my feelings, and I won't care about politeness or not." Qin Qing showed a charming expression of annoyance at ignoring him and walked towards the tent door. When she reached the exit, she stopped and said coldly, "You have hands and feet. Whether you like to come to Qin Qing or not, who can tell you what to do!" Then she moved her delicate body outside the tent.

Xiang Shaolong shook his head and smiled bitterly. It seemed that both he and Qin Qing's self-control were declining, and one day they would end up in bed together. Although the consequences were predictable, wouldn't it be incredibly romantic and charming to have an affair with her without anyone knowing?

The hunting party slowly crossed the river. Under Xu Xian's instructions, two temporary wooden bridges were built, bringing the total to four. The barking of hunting dogs echoed across the plains, and those who owned falcons sent their birds into the sky to soar and display their power. Xiang Shaolong thought of Zhou Liang's war eagles and became even more interested in these hunting eagles, secretly thinking that he would get one to play with later. They had practical value and could be considered constructive toys.

Ji Yanran and the other women went with Qin Qing to join Zhu Ji's hunting party, while he himself went to accompany Xiao Pan on his hunt. These days, he and Zhu Ji had tried to avoid seeing each other to avoid awkwardness, perhaps because Zhu Ji feared that Lao Du was jealous of him. When he reached the shore, Xiao Pan, surrounded by his ministers and guards, crossed the Jing River. Xiang Shaolong and the Eighteen Iron Guards caught up with the rear guard and encountered Guan Zhongxie, who was bringing up the rear. Xiang Shaolong laughed, "I thought Lord Guan had joined the women's army!"

Guan Zhongxie knew he was implying that he spent all his time with Lu Dan'er and Ying Ying, and said calmly, "Official business is important. If we don't get rid of them soon, Lord Xiang will probably punish me." Xiang Shaolong felt a chill, knowing that because he had decided to eliminate Lu Gong, he considered Lu Dan'er to be of no use to him anymore, hence his cold tone. As for Ying Ying, she was originally a pawn he used to connect with the Changping brothers. However, if Xiang Shaolong, Lu Gong, and others were killed when Gaoling Jun attacked, the Imperial Guards and the cavalry responsible for security would not be exempt from punishment. Lü Buwei would definitely use this opportunity to dismiss the Changping brothers and a group of cavalry generals, replacing them with his own trusted subordinates.

On the contrary, the Imperial Guards, stationed in Xianyang, were unrelated to this matter and could remain neutral. Therefore, Guan Zhongxie, this heartless man, had no further interest in Ying Ying. Mo Ao's insidious schemes were all beyond Xiang Shaolong's ability to handle. His current advantage was entirely due to luck! Seeing his silence, Guan Zhongxie assumed he was displeased and quickly said, "Lord Xiang, your five needles thrown with even force are truly admirable." Xiang Shaolong casually replied, "A mere trifle!"

At this moment, the two rode side-by-side across the wooden bridge, their hooves thundering. A long wind blew across the plain, invigorating Xiang Shaolong. The sun was setting behind the western mountains, its rays casting a golden glow across the land. Guan Zhongxie said, "I almost forgot, Prime Minister Lü has something to discuss with Lord Xiang." Xiang Shaolong responded, rode off the wooden bridge, and chased after the large banner ahead.

Chapter Six: Wildfire Banquet

The plains on the east bank of the Jing River stretched for hundreds of miles, an endless expanse of rolling hills, dense forests, and crisscrossing waterways—truly an ideal hunting ground. Over ten thousand people arrived on this vast plain, resembling several small groups of animals, quickly scattering to search for their prey. Xiao Pan's group was the largest, but since it included Zhu Ji, the royal family's wives, and high-ranking officials, they only lingered a short distance from the shore to join the fun.

Lü Buwei led Xiang Shaolong up a small hill, watching a pack of hunting dogs barking wildly as they dashed down into a dense forest, followed by Xiao Pan, Wang Ben, the Changping brothers who were their personal protectors, and a group of imperial guards. He said with delight, "I've spoken to the Empress Dowager; she will personally announce Shaolong and Niang Rong's marriage at the wildfire banquet later." Xiang Shaolong couldn't help but admire his acting skills; they remained so realistic and natural. Lu Buwei asked, "Shaolong, you have no objections, do you?"

Xiang Shaolong replied, "I'm just afraid I'm not good enough for the Third Miss." Lu Buwei chuckled, "I love Shaolong's humility. After I move to the new Prime Minister's residence, I'll immediately choose a date for your marriage, and then I'll put this matter to rest."

Xiang Shaolong secretly laughed to himself, "Then you, you treacherous villain, will understand what it means to be caught in a dilemma." Just seeing their pathetic state, with their wicked father and daughter, already filled him with great satisfaction. Lü Buwei then asked, "What's the situation with Lord Gaoling?" Xiang Shaolong feigned concern and replied, "I've had men secretly monitoring him, but I haven't detected any hidden troops. Perhaps we're being paranoid."

Lü Buwei said, "It's always good to be cautious. I'll leave this entirely to you." He then sighed softly, "Shaolong! Are you still doubting my sincerity?" Caught

off guard, Xiang Shaolong froze for a moment, then stammered, "What makes you say that, Prime Minister Lü?" Lü Buwei smiled wryly, "Shaolong, you don't need to hide it from me. That night, I was possessed and invited you to the Drunken Wind Pavilion for drinks. I saw you secretly pour the wine that Shan Meimei offered onto the table. Alas! Did you think it was poison?" Xiang Shaolong

inwardly exclaimed in admiration, but he couldn't help but respond, replying with a wry smile, "Just as Prime Minister Lü said, it's always good to be cautious, isn't it?" The two exchanged a glance and then burst into laughter. Lu Buwei, panting, chuckled as he placed a hand on Xiang Shaolong's shoulder, "Once Niangrong becomes a member of your Xiang family, Shaolong will be my good son-in-law. Then you can drink with peace of mind, right?"

Xiang Shaolong secretly marveled at Lu Buwei's cunning. His words convinced him that Shan Meimei's cup of wine wasn't poisoned at all, and that he was just being paranoid. They also allowed him to deceive Xiang Shaolong into complete devotion before his "death." Needless to say, this was also a brilliant plan devised by Mo Ao, who was "truly about to die," to prevent him and Xu Xian from preemptively striking and ruining his scheme. Thinking of this, he genuinely smiled.

Under the starlight and moonlight, the camp was filled with a lively and joyful atmosphere. The hunt's bounty was roasted until fragrant, and the bonfires illuminated the camp, which stretched for miles, with a warm, fiery glow. The ten people with the most successful hunts were invited to the royal camp to receive rewards from Zhu Ji and Xiao Pan, and to attend the royal banquet. Xiuyi, true to his professional-level hunting skills, had the best haul. Wu Tingfang, Zhao Zhi, and the Tian sisters excitedly prepared the game, while Ji Yanran and Qin Qing whispered amongst themselves.

Xiang Shaolong, as usual, patrolled the royal camp with the Changping brothers, reminding the guards not to get carried away and become complacent. Teng Yi and Jing Jun returned at this time. He learned from them that the Wu family's elite troops had entered a strategic position, monitoring Gaoling Jun's men. Relieved, Xiang Shaolong discussed the matter with the two and was about to find Xu Xian when he was stopped by Ying Ying at the gate. The girl's expression was unfriendly, and she coldly said, "Xiang Shaolong! Come with me!"

Confused, Xiang Shaolong followed her down the hillside. Deep within the densely packed camp, the voices from the square and the flickering firelight made the place seem particularly dark and eerie. Ying Ying leaned against a tent, glaring at him fiercely. Her beautiful hair hung down, still damp, and a faint scent of post-bath fragrance wafted from her body—undoubtedly from a recent bath in the nearby stream. At the same time, various questions arose in his mind. Since meeting Ying Ying, although he had been entangled with her and their grudges remained unresolved, he had never seriously considered their relationship due to his busy schedule. Only now, with Mo Ao's inner demon gone, did he have the leisure to ponder these matters.

From the perspective of opposing Lü Buwei, he should have used any means necessary to seize Ying Ying from Guan Zhongxie. In this era where everyone had multiple wives and concubines, one more woman wouldn't have made much difference. Besides, she was so beautiful and alluring. At that time, his relationship with the Changwen brothers would be even closer, and the Qin military and royal family would consider him one of their own, which would also be a blow to Guan Zhongxie. Because if Lu Gong and the others didn't die, and the Changping brothers didn't resign, Guan Zhongxie would naturally try to win over Ying Ying, using the marriage alliance to consolidate his position in Xianyang.

As for Lu Dan'er, due to Lu Gong's opposition, Guan Zhongxie was hesitant; even Zhu Ji probably couldn't help with this matter. But Ying Ying didn't have these problems. Whether he or Guan Zhongxie married Ying Ying, it was based on strategic considerations. Thinking of this, he couldn't help but smile bitterly. This willful girl was completely different from Shan Rou; she was purely a young and capricious teenager with unpredictable temperaments. Overindulged in pampering, she was incomparable to the other wives and concubines. He was currently in direct conflict with Guan Zhongxie; he had no time for jealousy and petty squabbles.

As these thoughts flashed through his mind, Ying Ying said angrily, "Xiang Shaolong! Am I, Ying Ying, so disliked by you? When I challenged you, I always made excuses, claiming my leg injury made it inconvenient. How could I perform my flying needle skill in front of the Crown Prince? Now everyone knows you don't give me face. How am I going to settle this score with you?" Xiang Shaolong suddenly realized that she had developed feelings for him after seeing his superb flying needle skills. While outwardly appearing to be a accusing force, she secretly harbored a desire to surrender and reconcile, which was why she had abandoned the other women's army and come to him alone.

Xiang Shaolong took two steps forward, bringing him to within a foot of her, their breaths mingling. He smiled and said, "Alright! I admit I was wrong, but the leg injury is definitely not fabricated. I can take off my pants for you to examine!" Ying Ying's pretty face flushed red, and she stamped her foot, angrily retorting, "Who wants to examine you? I want you to throw it for us again!"

Xiang Shaolong felt a headache coming on. If he couldn't return to his previous level, he would reveal his true intentions. He smiled wryly and said, "The wound reopened when I threw the needle today. Let's find something else to play." "!" Ying Ying's attitude towards him improved significantly,

and she innocently asked, "Then what should we play?" Xiang Shaolong's heart skipped a beat when he heard this. He remembered that her brother had said that Qin women inherited the traditions of nomadic peoples and did not care about chastity before marriage. Ying Ying was especially charming, and his gaze couldn't help but fall on her breasts, which were much fuller than those of girls her age. He asked, "Where is your tent?" Ying Ying's pretty face flushed, and she scolded, "What are you looking at?" She took a small step back, becoming close to the tent behind her.

Xiang Shaolong chuckled, "What man doesn't love looking at a woman's body? Miss Ying, why are you making such a fuss? How about this? I'll come to your camp after the first watch of the night and give you plenty of face so you can vent your anger." Ying Ying became happy and smiled radiantly, "It's a deal."

Xiang Shaolong leaned forward to examine her beautiful eyes closely, "Don't set traps for me again, hmph!" Ying Ying knew that this man had ulterior motives towards her proud breasts, but she still puffed out her chest and said disdainfully, "Who has the time to harm you! Remember this! If you break your promise, Ying Ying will hate you for the rest of her life."

Xiang Shaolong used his strength to pull her, and Ying Ying cried out softly as her body fell towards him, her high breasts immediately pressed against his broad chest without reservation. But she didn't blame him. She glanced at him sideways and said, "My tent is west of the royal camp. The flag is purple, and there's a purple flower embroidered on the tent flap. Don't forget." She smiled sweetly again and flew away like a bird. Xiang Shaolong was overjoyed that she reconciled with him so easily. He thought to himself, "No wonder the Qin people love hunting so much; it's the perfect time for courtship."

The banquet was held in an open field, surrounded by numerous tents, wooden stockades, and fortified walls. Xiao Pan and Zhu Ji's banquet was at the north end, while the other three sides had three rows of over sixty tables, each seating four to six people. Torches were placed between the tables, creating a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a wildfire party. Wine was, of course, indispensable for such an occasion, and the food consisted entirely of the hunted game—birds and beasts, all prepared in their own way. The aroma of the meat was irresistible, and the spicy flavor was quite unique.

Except for Lord Gaoling and Tian Dan, who declined to attend, all members of the royal family and high-ranking officials were present. Among them were relatives of nobles and generals like Lu Dan'er, Ying Ying, and Ji Yanran, as well as those who had performed best during the hunt. Ji Yanran, Wu Tingfang, Zhao Zhi, and Xiu Yi sat with Qin Qing. Even Lord Lu, exhausted, frequently glanced at the three seats to the left of Zhu Ji, let alone the other, less composed young people. At the head of the table sat Crown Prince Dan and Xu Yize, chatting and laughing with Zhu Ji. Ji Yanran maintained her relaxed and carefree demeanor, seemingly unaware that she had become the target of everyone's attention.

Xiao Pan, hosting such a large and unusual banquet for the first time, sat upright, looking somewhat unnatural. But the most nervous was Lao Du, who sat behind Zhu Ji, because Zhu Ji had just told him that the Crown Prince would announce his promotion to Grand Secretary. However, the most unfortunate one was Xiang Shaolong, who was seated at the first table to the right of Xiao Pan, next to Lü Buwei. On one side was Lü Buwei, and on the other were the expressionless Lü Niangrong and Guan Zhongxie. Mo Ao, as usual, did not attend, both because his position was unsuitable and to avoid attracting attention.

Everyone first toasted Xiao Pan, and after Lü Buwei sang words of praise, Xiao Pan raised his cup in return, and the banquet began. Lü Buwei stood up and toasted Lu Gong, who was seated across from Xu Xian, before sitting down and saying to Xiao Pan: "I heard that Your Highness shot down a wild goose. This is a very auspicious omen; our Great Qin will surely have favorable weather and a peaceful and prosperous year." Xiao Pan happily raised his cup and said: "Right Chancellor, let me drink with you." Lü Buwei quickly raised his cup and drank.

Xiang Shaolong, watching from the side, inwardly applauded. Lü Buwei's acting skills certainly deserved a lifetime achievement award, and Xiao Pan could probably win a best actor award, for he was indeed the true protagonist of this Warring States period. Guan Zhongxie's voice came: "Lord Xiang, would you be willing to perform your amazing skill of firing five needles simultaneously again at the evening gala hosted by the Crown Prince?" Xiang Shaolong cursed inwardly. Turning his head, he immediately noticed the awkward and stiff atmosphere between the two of them and the expressionless Lü Niangrong. He nodded and smiled at Lü Niangrong first, then said to Guan Zhongxie: "It's better to hide your

talent than to show off. I haven't seen the power of Lord Guan's iron bow yet. Will Lord Guan grant my wish?" He chuckled inwardly. He was sure that Guan Zhongxie would show off his strength tonight. It would be good to show off in front of the Qin people, just like those five flying needles that were still stuck in the target. Guan Zhongxie laughed and said, "As long as Lord Xiang gives the order, how dare I disobey? If it weren't for your leg injury, I would really like to spar with you and enjoy the pleasure of being taught by a master." As soon as he said this, Xiang Shaolong guessed that Guan Zhongxie would show off his skills at the evening performance held at the main archery range down the slope after the banquet. Lu Buwei leaned close to Xiang Shaolong from behind and said to Lu Niangrong, "Niangrong, you should serve Lord Xiang well for your father."

Lu Niangrong rolled her eyes at Xiang Shaolong and said indifferently, "Lord Xiang didn't speak to Niangrong!" Lu Buwei patted Xiang Shaolong's shoulder hard and scolded, "Shaolong! Quickly make Niangrong happy."

Xiang Shaolong felt that Zhu Ji, Ji Yanran, Qin Qing and others were all watching them, and felt even more uncomfortable. He smiled bitterly and said, "I know." Lu Buwei and Guan Zhongxie each found someone to drink and chat with, in order to create opportunities for them. It can be said that they were "well-intentioned". Xiang Shaolong looked at Lü Niangrong, who happened to be looking at him as well. Xiang Shaolong forced a smile and asked, "What did you hunt today, Third Miss?"

Lü Niangrong also forced a smile, but as soon as she met Xiang Shaolong's intense gaze, her face immediately fell, she lowered her head, and shook her head, saying, "I have no interest in hunting today." Xiang Shaolong thought to himself, "At least you have some conscience! You know how to feel uneasy." But he said aloud, "It wasn't me, Xiang Shaolong, who ruined Third Miss's mood, was it?"

Lü Niangrong's delicate body trembled slightly. She raised her pretty face, looked him over, her expression complex and contradictory. In the firelight, Lü Niangrong appeared even more youthful and radiant, comparable to Ying Ying's beauty, though her figure and posture didn't evoke the same allure. Suddenly, he sensed something was wrong; Lü Niangrong's eyes reddened, and tears welled up in her eyes. At this moment, Lü Buwei also noticed and anxiously asked, "Niangrong! Should we go back to our tents to rest?"

Lu Niangrong suddenly stood up, drawing the attention of Zhu Ji, Xiao Pan, Qin Qing, Ji Yanran, and others, including Lu Gong and Xu Xian. She cried, "I won't marry him!" Ignoring Lu Buwei's calls, she covered her face and ran towards the rear tent. However, the noise of the banquet drinking games drowned out everything else, so only a limited number of people knew what had happened, and it didn't attract widespread attention or affect the atmosphere. Lu Buwei and Guan Zhongxie stared helplessly as her retreating figure disappeared into the darkness of the tent.

Xiang Shaolong, on the other hand, had a slightly different opinion of her, thinking that she was different from his father and couldn't stand such deception, and guessing that she didn't entirely dislike him. At this moment, Lao Du, on Zhu Ji's orders, came over and invited Lu Buwei to come over. Lu Buwei gave Guan Zhongxie a wink before obeying. Just as Guan Zhongxie was about to go find Lü Niangrong, Xiang Shaolong grabbed him, saying, "Let her go! These things can't be forced." Guan Zhongxie gave a strange look, sat back down, and said with a wry smile, "Lord Xiang is right!"

Lü Buwei returned at this moment and said in a deep voice, "Let's cancel the marriage for now and talk about it later! Alas! Shaolong! I don't know what to say." Xiang Shaolong was secretly delighted, but pretended to be sad and said, "Prime Minister Lü, don't worry about it. Heh! I think..."

Just as he was about to find an excuse to slip away, Lao Du arrived, this time to invite Xiang Shaolong over. Xiang Shaolong dreaded seeing Zhu Ji, but upon hearing this, he had no choice but to steel himself and approach her. When he reached her seat, Zhu Ji said calmly, "Shaolong, no need for formalities, please sit!" Xiang Shaolong squatted down to her left rear and whispered, "What instructions does the Empress Dowager have?"

He glanced at Lao Du, who was sitting about five steps behind Zhu Ji, listening intently to their conversation, though the noise in the room was deafening, so he shouldn't have heard their voices. Zhu Ji, having benefited from Lao Du's treatment, was even more radiant and beautiful. Her gaze lingered on his face, and she sighed, "Shaolong! You and Zheng'er have both changed." Xiang Shaolong was startled by Zhu Ji's words and exclaimed, "Empress Dowager!" Zhu Ji

said angrily, "I don't want to hear insincere words. Alas! Are you all blaming me in your hearts?" Her tone softened at the last sentence, carrying a hint of resentment and helplessness. Xiang Shaolong felt a pang of guilt. He could have indeed helped her avoid Lao Du's temptation, but due to an overwhelming sense of fate and the inability to replace Lao Du himself, he abandoned the idea, leaving Zhu Ji deeply entangled. How could he not feel remorse? He was speechless for a moment. Zhu Ji leaned closer and whispered, "Every time, I treated him as you, understand?"

Xiang Shaolong's body stiffened, and he looked at her. Zhu Ji's beautiful eyes reddened, and she avoided his gaze, her tone returning to calm as she said, "Commander Xiang may leave!" Xiang Shaolong was stunned for a long while before returning to Lü Buwei's seat. Before he could speak to Lü and Guan, Lu Dan'er and Ying Ying skipped over hand in hand, wanting to pull Guan Zhongxie into their group of noble ladies for a drinking contest, but their eyes lingered on Xiang Shaolong.

Guan Zhongxie was in no mood for such things, and politely replied, "I'm acting on Lord Xiang's orders; I need to stretch my legs a bit later." Then he said to Xiang Shaolong, "If Lord Xiang wants to see me make a fool of myself, then you'll have to accept the challenges from the two young ladies on my behalf." Xiang

Shaolong, afraid that Lü Buwei would question him about what he and Zhu Ji had discussed, laughed and said, "Lord Guan, you really know how to talk!" He turned and followed the two women from the open space behind the seats to the other end. Lu Dan'er was quite surprised, and without any hesitation, she stood close to him, saying as they walked, "You're smart enough to make peace, shall we?"

Xiang Shaolong found it amusing, knowing that Ying Ying hadn't told this spoiled girl about what had just happened between them. He glanced at Ying Ying, and just as he was about to speak, someone blocked their path. It turned out to be Chang Wenjun and Jing Jun. Jing Jun laughed, "Do you two young ladies want to get my third brother drunk? You'll have to get past me first." Seeing him holding a flask in his left hand and a cup in his right, the two women stopped and exclaimed in unison, "Do you think we're afraid of you, little Jun?"

Xiang Shaolong hadn't expected Jing Jun to be so familiar with them, guessing that he must have flirted with them before. Chang Wenjun smiled at Xiang Shaolong, "Did you receive the red flowers from my sister and Dan'er, Lord Xiang?" The two women's pretty faces immediately flushed red, and they glared fiercely at Chang Wenjun. Lu Dan'er, leaning on her hips, scolded, "What good will it do? What can a cripple do?"

Xiang Shaolong, completely bewildered, asked, "What red flower?" Jing Jun chuckled, "The flower can be given to Third Brother, but I, your little brother, will carry out the operation." The two women laughed and scolded in unison, their pretty faces flushed with excitement, appearing even more alluring in the torchlight.

Chang Wenjun leaned closer to Xiang Shaolong and explained, "This is a custom of our Great Qin. During the hunt, if an unmarried girl takes a fancy to a man, she will give him a hand-embroidered red flower. The man with the flower can spend the night in her tent after midnight. Heh! Do you understand now?" Xiang Shaolong was speechless, not expecting the Qin women to be so open-minded, but his gaze involuntarily lingered on the two women. Ying Ying stamped her foot and scolded, "Second Brother, you only know how to talk nonsense."

Lu Dan'er smiled charmingly, "I haven't decided who to give the flowers to yet. I'll think about it at the party tonight." Xiang Shaolong was greatly stimulated. The openness of the Qin women was indeed unmatched by the other six states. He smiled at Jing Jun and said, "Xiao Jun! Miss Dan'er is giving you a hint."

Chang Wenjun said, "Then should your fifth brother take the flowers, but you carry out the actual work?" Although Ying Ying and Lu Dan'er were being taken advantage of by the three men, they didn't mind. They just acted coquettishly and refused, which made people even more imaginative. Jing Jun loved to flirt with beautiful women. He smiled and said, "If I get the red flowers from the two beauties, I will give Miss Ying's to Third Brother, and I will keep Miss Dan'er's for myself, oh!"

Lu Dan'er kicked him. Jing Jun bounced up on the spot, flipped backward, and drank a cup with both hands. Not a drop of wine spilled. The four of them were stunned. The banquet on the right was still in full swing, with over two hundred people making a ruckus, but here they were in a completely different world. Changwen Jun, seeing Jing Jun's skills for the first time, exhaled a breath of cool air and said, "With just this one move, Dan'er will give you the red flower." Lu Dan'er stared at Jing Jun in surprise and uncertainty, saying, "Little monkey! Do two more somersaults and let me see."

Jing Jun wore his usual lazy, annoying smile, glancing at Lu Dan'er with a smug look, and said, "If you turn into a female monkey, I'll pretend to be a male monkey and take you to the tree for somersaults." Lu Dan'er shouted angrily, lunging forward and throwing punches. Jing Jun, however, kept drinking and dodging, chasing her until he disappeared into the back of the tent. Xiang Shaolong, watching this, was greatly intrigued. Although Jing Jun wasn't from Qin, he was his sworn brother with Wang Jian and held an official position. Perhaps Lord Lu would approve of his relationship with Lu Dan'er?

Girls of Lu Dan'er's age are most fickle. Her interest in Guan Zhongxie is merely based on her admiration for heroes. If Jing Jun performs better, and with Lu Gong's support, plus the fact that they are of similar age and both so playful, perhaps their playful antics will blossom into love, thus resolving Guan Zhongxie's ruthless scheme to use Lu Dan'er to cultivate relations with the Qin military.

At this moment, the bell rang, and the entire place fell silent. The three stood still, listening attentively to Xiao Pan's words. Xiao Pan stood up, first bowing to his mother, Empress Zhu Ji, before announcing the ten outstanding young men who had performed best in today's hunt, all of whom were appointed as lieutenants and immediately allowed to join the ranks. The ten young talents were overjoyed, stepped forward, knelt to thank the emperor for his favor, and swore allegiance. Then, Xiao Pan calmly announced a series of personnel changes, including the promotion of Teng Sheng to the newly established position of Outer Historian and Lao Du to Inner Historian.

Some ministers felt it was inappropriate for Lao Du to be appointed as the Grand Secretary, but seeing that Lao Du was a favorite of the Empress Dowager and that Lu Gong and Xu Xian had not objected, no one dared to speak up. Then the main event began. Emperor Xiao Pan first praised Lü Buwei's achievements in establishing the three eastern commanderies, and finally bestowed upon Lü Buwei the title of "Uncle," listing a long string of vain and meaningless duties, all undoubtedly created by the brilliant mind of Li Si. Leaving aside Lü Buwei's immense power in the Qin court, as long as Xu Xian and Lu Gong, the two most respected figures, did not object, the matter was settled.

Finally, the emperor and his ministers raised their glasses in a toast, and the banquet came to an end. At this moment, Lord Changwen excused himself and hurried to attend to Emperor Xiao Pan and the Empress Dowager as they departed. Ying Ying took two steps back, seemingly afraid of Xiang Shaolong, and said in a coquettish voice, "Don't forget what you promised." Xiang Shaolong sneered, "Your promise is null and void. You said you'd make peace, but just now you openly looked for another man right in front of me, and only used me as a substitute after he rejected you."

Ying Ying stamped her foot and said angrily, "That's not it, I actually wanted to come... Ah! Who do you think you are? Why should I explain to you?" Seeing her eyes red with anger and tears welling up, Xiang Shaolong was both anxious and furious. Seeing that everyone was starting to leave, he tried to smooth things over by laughing, "Fine! I guess I'm afraid of you, Miss. Being a substitute is fine!"

Ying Ying was so angry she almost drew her sword, roaring, "I told you you weren't a substitute! I've been... I won't say anymore! Try not coming to me!" She turned and stormed off. Xiang Shaolong shouted, "Where's that red flower?"

Ying Ying quickened her pace. Xiang Shaolong turned around, just in time to meet Ji Yanran, who had come up behind him. His beautiful wife rolled her eyes at him and said, "Husband's back to his old womanizing ways." Xiang Shaolong sighed, pulled her aside, and explained why he had seduced Ying Ying. Ji Yanran sighed, "Husband, be careful. Guan Zhongxie has been watching you both. He might try to sabotage things. Yingying is still a member of the royal family. It would be beneficial for Guan Zhongxie to have her as his wife."

Xiang Shaolong smiled and said, "Yanran is actually helping her husband pursue a woman! With such a wife, what more could a husband ask for? If Yingying wants to fall into Guan Zhongxie's arms, let her be." Ji Yanran pulled him into the open space of the camp to avoid the crowd surging towards the main archery range, and whispered in his ear, "Can you say you haven't fallen for Qingjie?"

Xiang Shaolong blushed and said, "Falling for her? I almost wanted to make a move. Hmm, why did you bring her up?" Ji Yanran said, "What did you two talk about in the tent just now? Why were her ears so red and her expression so ambiguous when she left?"

Xiang Shaolong laughed, "I was just like usual with... " "You two can talk normally! It's just that she's too shy." Ji Yanran said with a slight reproach, "Qing-jie is a very self-disciplined person, but she's become shy because she's fallen for you."

Xiang Shaolong deliberately sighed, "It's my fault! Sigh! Why don't others have this kind of trouble?" Ji Yanran laughed, "Who told you to be so handsome, kind-hearted, and eloquent? Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to win you over with those sweet words like 'absolute power corrupts absolutely'."

Xiang Shaolong exclaimed, "You think such profound truths are just sweet talk? I'll see if I forgive you!" Ji Yanran smiled charmingly, "Who wants you to forgive me!"

Just then, Jing Jun came over, beaming, and said, "The party has started. Are Third Brother and Third Sister-in-law still whispering sweet nothings here?" Amidst laughter and banter, the three walked towards the village gate. Xiang Shaolong took the opportunity to ask him about his relationship with Lu Dan'er.

Jing Jun remarked with lingering relish, "That girl was quite the vixen. She let me touch her a few times and then chased after me. Later, I covered my head and let her beat me up. She looked fierce on the surface, but she was incredibly protective of me when she attacked. It was truly spectacular." Xiang Shaolong greeted the people around him as he said, "If you want to win the heart of a beauty, you have to do it these next few days. Do you understand?" Jing Jun nodded in understanding and slipped into the crowd, disappearing in an instant. Xiang Ji and Xiang Shaolong exchanged a knowing smile.
