If someone commits a crime in the mortal world, even if they don't confess the truth, or if they use connections to bribe their way out, even if they escape punishment (it's better if they don't escape), there are still fugitives who, even after a lifetime of escape, will eventually die. They will report to the underworld and be thrown into the Mirror of Retribution Hell, where their sins will be revealed in the mirror. Then they are sent to different hells to suffer.

Fifth Level: Steaming Cage Hell

There are people who gossip, spread rumors, frame others, and slander them. These are the people commonly known as gossipy women. After death, such people are sent to the Steaming Cage Hell and steamed in a cage. Not only that, after being steamed, a cold wind blows, reshaping their bodies, and they are taken to the Tongue-Pulling Hell.

Sixth Level: Copper Pillar Hell

Those who intentionally commit arson, whether to destroy evidence, for revenge, or to kill, are sent to the Copper Pillar Hell after death. Little devils, your clothes are meant to be wrapped in a copper pillar, one meter in diameter and two meters high. Charcoal is burned inside, and the fire is constantly fanned, quickly turning the copper pillar red-hot. Do you feel that? Have you seen the Investiture of the Gods? The torture of Su Daji? Seeing this will surely give you a jolt.

The Seventh Level: The Hell of Knives

Climbing the mountain of knives is an act of blasphemy against the gods, regardless of whether you believe in them. Those who kill animals—not just humans, but even cows, horses, cats, or dogs—are considered living beings. Perhaps they were once human, or even you, because the underworld differs from the mortal realm; there is no distinction of high or low, noble or base. Cows, horses, cats, dogs, and humans are all collectively called living beings. Those who commit either of these two sins will be sent to the Hell of Knives after death, stripped naked, and forced to climb the mountain of knives. Depending on the severity of their sins, they may remain "permanently" on the mountain.

The Eighth Level: The Hell of Ice

Those who murder their husbands, commit adultery, or are malicious wicked women will be sent to the Hell of Ice after death. They will be stripped naked and forced to climb an icy mountain. It's cold! Also, those addicted to gambling, disrespectful to their parents, and unjust and unrighteous individuals will be sent to the icy mountain. Pan Jinlian is certainly among them!

The Ninth Level of the Oil Cauldron Hell

Those who commit prostitution, theft, robbery, bullying the weak, abducting women and children, falsely accusing and defaming others, or plotting to seize others' property or wives, are sent to the Oil Cauldron Hell after death. They are stripped naked and thrown into a cauldron of hot oil, where they are fried repeatedly with a loud crackling sound! Depending on the severity of their crimes, they are fried n times… Sometimes, those with particularly heinous sins, having just emerged from the Ice Mountain Hell, are escorted by demons to the Oil Cauldron Hell to "warm up"… This is the upper nine levels, also known as the Eastern Hell. Although the name differs slightly from Fengdu, it shows how numerous the hells are; this is not a mistake by Dong. The lower nine levels of the Western Hell in the *Complete Water and Land Painting of the Oil Cauldron* are even more cruel… The commonly known eighteen levels of hell are correct in number, but their meaning is not necessarily understood. The *Eighteen Hells Sutra* explains that the main difference between these eighteen levels lies not in their spatial location, but in the differences in time and punishment, especially in time. Compared to time in the mortal world, the first level of hell uses 3,750 years as a year, and beings here must live for 10,000 years, unable to die even a day earlier. This 10,000 years is equivalent to 13.5 billion years in the mortal world. Since time and lifespan in hell increase exponentially with each level, by the eighteenth level, it's measured in billions upon billions of years. Such prolonged torture is truly an unforgivable ordeal, the pain and cruelty of which are unimaginable and incomprehensible to mortals.

The tenth level, the Ox Pit Hell,

is where animals seek justice. Those who indiscriminately kill livestock in life, building their happiness on the suffering of animals, will be thrown into the Ox Pit Hell after death. Thrown into the pit, they are attacked by several wild oxen, gored by horns and trampled by hooves. According to records, there is also a contrasting hell called "Knife Boat Hell," not listed in these eighteen levels, which will be added later.

The Eleventh Level of the Stone-Pressing Hell

If a person gives birth to an infant while alive, and for whatever reason—such as the infant being born mentally challenged or disabled, or due to reasons like preference for sons over daughters—then the infant is drowned or abandoned. Such a person will be sent to the Stone-Pressing Hell after death. This is a large square stone pool (trough) with a giant stone of the same size suspended above it by ropes. The person is placed in the pool, and the ropes are cut with an axe. The Twelfth Level of the Mortar and Pestle Hell

This hell is quite peculiar. If, while alive, you waste food and squander grains—for example, carelessly throwing away leftovers from a banquet, or eating only a few bites of food you don't like and then throwing it away—you will be sent to the Mortar and Pestle Hell after death, where you will be pounded to death in a mortar. Strangely, if you talk while eating, especially using foul language, obscenities, or cursing, you will also be sent to the Mortar and Pestle Hell to suffer. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid talking while eating, especially cursing.

The Thirteenth Level: Blood Pool Hell

Those who disrespect others, are unfilial to their parents, are dishonest, or follow crooked paths will be thrown into the Blood Pool Hell after death to suffer in the blood pool. Why are those who die in childbirth, vomit blood, or bleed (die from bleeding) also thrown into the Blood Pool to suffer?

The Fourteenth Level: Hell of Unjust Death

Know that coming into this world as a human being is extremely difficult; it is an opportunity given to you by Yama, the King of Hell. If you do not cherish it and commit suicide, such as by cutting your wrists, taking poison, or hanging yourself, you will anger Yama and be thrown into the Hell of Unjust Death. You will never be able to be human again. I advise those still alive that no matter how great the difficulties, you must live on tenaciously; suicide is a sign of weakness. This is especially true for those young people who commit suicide for love.

The Fifteenth Level: Hell of Crucifixion

This is less common now, but the sin is very grave. Those who dig up graves will be thrown into the Hell of Crucifixion after death and subjected to the punishment of crucifixion (pronounced "zhe").

Sixteenth Level: Volcano Hell

This level is quite extensive. Those who enrich themselves at the expense of the public, engage in bribery and corruption, petty theft, robbery, and arson will be sent to Volcano Hell after death. They will be driven into the volcano and burned alive but will not die. Also, monks and Taoist priests who break their vows will be sent to the volcano. (This level is probably the most profitable of the eighteen levels.) Seventeenth Level: Stone Mill Hell

Those who waste grains, thieves, corrupt officials, and oppress the people will be sent to Stone Mill Hell after death. They will be ground into meat paste. Their bodies will then be reshaped and ground again! Monks and Taoist priests who eat meat will suffer the same fate.

Eighteenth Level:

Saw Hell Those who cut corners, deceive their superiors, abduct women and children, and engage in unfair trade will be sent to Saw Hell after death. They will be stripped naked, bound in a "T" shape to four wooden stakes, and sawn to death from the groin to the head.

Volume 1: The Journey to the West After a Blessing of Love

Chapter 1: The Number 13
