Volume 2 Imperial Conquest
Chapter 1 Dream Enters the Capital
Floating, in the boundless darkness, is it my shadow or my body that floats?
Why am I back here again?
I can't see the light, I can't hear the wind, everything is so familiar.
I want to find an exit, a direction, but this darkness devours me, engulfs me.
I feel no fear, nor loneliness, I just feel like I've returned to where it all began.
What is this place?
Is it my final destination or my initial starting point?
I don't know, I want to know.
But there's no one I can ask.
The lost space stretches endlessly, the vanished time has no end.
I am like a ghost, wandering in the void.
Suddenly, I vaguely see a black light, flowing faintly ahead.
This is the only direction in the space, the only thing I can see.
I reach out my hand, I can't see my fingers, but I feel it touch the black light.
"Boom—"
A strange white light flashed before my eyes. I saw the arrogant god standing atop the mountain; I saw an old man in royal robes fall into a pool of blood; I saw a young prince fleeing for his life;
—"Fulfill your destiny, shroud this world in darkness!"
—"Revenge, Xiu Lan, avenge me!"
—"I cannot die, I am still young, I must avenge myself!"
Countless voices filled my mind, surging and churning, a surge of hatred and killing intent suddenly rising within me.
I closed my eyes, feeling somewhat dry.
I opened my eyes and found myself in a dimly lit room.
The door was closed, the curtains blocked out the light, only a single candle burned silently.
I lay on a large bed, my clothes removed at some point, leaving only a thin blanket.
The energy within my body flowed silently, but I sensed it was much weaker than before.
A faint pain throbbed through my meridians, and a feeling of weakness and soreness washed over my entire body.
Where am I?
Was everything I just saw a nightmare?
How long was I unconscious? Who brought me here?
In my daze, I recalled the scene before I lost consciousness.
It was a desolate Gobi Desert, moonless and starless.
Surrounding me were squads of ferocious-looking Black Flag Regiment soldiers, howling and charging at me with weapons raised, surging like a tide.
A scarred man hid in the crowd, shouting hoarsely, but unable to hide the fear and horror in his expression.
—It was Chago!
A surge of anger rose in my heart again, and I vaguely heard him roar: "Kill! Kill him!"
Then, my memory went blank, and I couldn't remember anything.
Suddenly, the door was gently opened, and a sliver of light shone on the person who entered.
I saw his face, that pale and eerie face.
The mysterious owner of the stone house in the city of mountains!
How could it be him?
A wary glint flashed in my eyes, and my right hand instinctively reached for my waist, only to find it empty. I then realized I was completely naked.
"We meet again, young man." His voice remained cold and devoid of emotion.
I watched him sit down in the chair beside the bed and asked in a low voice, "Who are you, and why are you here?"
The stone house owner slowly replied, "Because you unleashed the Darkness of Annihilation, you were almost completely destroyed. I saved you and brought you here."
"'Darkness of Annihilation'?"
I exclaimed in surprise, the name feeling both incredibly familiar and yet so distant.
“It’s a dark, ultimate magic, possessing the power to destroy heaven and earth. You triggered the Dark Annihilation while your mind was clouded, and although you succeeded by sheer luck, your body was like being in the center of a vortex when you activated it. Even with powerful dark energy protecting you, it was useless; your life was just a hair’s breadth away from being completely extinguished. It took me a whole month to pull you back from the brink of death, repair your meridians, and awaken your consciousness. But a lot of your energy has dissipated, and it will take time to recover,” the stone house owner replied.
I tried hard to recall the scene he described, but it was all a blank. My head began to throb, and I couldn’t help but shout irritably, “Why don’t I remember anything? Why?”
If he was telling the truth, then why did he save me? And the timing of his appearance was so perfect, as if he had been hiding behind me all along, and I hadn’t noticed.
"Because at that time your mind was already lost in killing intent and hatred, all your actions were driven by your subconscious. Now, of course you can't remember what happened then."
The stone house owner suddenly sighed, "If it weren't for that, how could the dark energy within you have reached its peak?
And how could you have unleashed the ultimate dark magic?"
"That's right," I let out a soft breath, then suddenly remembered something and asked, "Is Chago dead?"
The stone house owner said indifferently, "Chago's body has been completely destroyed. With the dark energy you detonated at that time, nothing within a three-mile radius could have survived. Not to mention Chago, most of the other members of the Black Flag Gang were killed or injured. The ground was littered with severed limbs and corpses, like a catastrophe."
I remained silent, but felt a void in my heart.
“So how incredibly lucky you are to have survived,” the stone house owner continued. “Your three companions didn’t die either. That wind-elemental archmage opened a magical defensive barrier. Although they were still seriously injured, given their physique and cultivation, their lives shouldn’t be in danger. Perhaps they have already recovered and safely arrived at the Temple City.”
From the stone house owner’s words, I understood that Debo and the others should be alright.
Especially since Alanzo, Yuriru, and Febing were all alive, that was indeed good news.
I still needed them; each of them possessed outstanding strength and unwavering loyalty—a force not to be underestimated.
“How far is it from here to the Temple City?” I asked.
“Less than a day’s journey on horseback. This is a place called Moon Reflection Peak, southwest of the Temple City, which is now under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Capital,” the stone house owner said. “However, you need to rest for at least three days. I don’t want my month’s hard work to be in vain.”
“Why did you save me?” I stared into his dark green eyes, but couldn’t find any answer within them.
“I remember saying back in the City of Mountains that you would understand all of this someday, but I can’t tell you now,” the stone house owner said calmly. “After arriving in the capital, you must be careful of the people in the Temple; they may become your strongest opponents. Unless absolutely necessary, never use ultimate dark magic again, and never get close to the people in the Temple.”
A disdainful sneer appeared on my lips. Although I didn’t speak, he already understood what I was thinking.
A cold glint flashed in his eyes, and he said in a deep voice, "Don't think I'm joking. Although your current strength has long surpassed the so-called human archmages and paladins, you are still no match for the three elders of the Temple. Besides, you haven't even recovered to your pre-injury strength yet."
He paused and continued, "Moreover, the powerful dark energy hidden within you will eventually arouse their vigilance and attention. If you don't handle it properly, a decisive battle between the two sides will be inevitable. Don't forget, the Temple has always prided itself on being the guardian of the human holy path."
"Don't think I'm a fool," I replied coldly, "My purpose in going to the capital is not for the Temple. As long as they don't provoke me, I won't offend them. But if they hinder me, even if it's the Temple, which claims to be the strongest among humans, I will wipe it off the face of the earth."
The owner of the stone house was not angered by my retort. He calmly stared at me for a long time before slowly saying, "Perhaps you have the ability, but not now, but in the future. Before you obtain the Demon Sword Dark Moon, you'd better not engage in a direct confrontation with the Temple."
“Dark Moon?”
I murmured softly, as if speaking the name of my closest loved one.
A blurry image floated in my mind, vaguely resembling a melancholy young girl.
“Tell me, where is it?” I demanded sharply.
The stone house owner slowly extended his long, slender, white right hand and gently pressed it against my forehead, saying in a hypnotic voice, “You will find Dark Moon, but now you need to sleep—”
My vision went dark, and I fell into a deep sleep.
Three days later, I arrived at the Temple City.
When I left Moon Reflection Peak, the stone house owner simply sat alone at the table, watching me walk out the door.
I didn’t turn back, nor did I say goodbye.
I understood that neither he nor I needed such things.
But I had a strong premonition—that I would see him again soon.
Although I still didn’t know who he was, I vaguely felt that there must be some close connection between us.
In the three days that followed, he rarely showed himself, speaking to me no more than six sentences a day.
Yet, I clearly felt his cold gaze watching and caring for me at every moment.
Even as I left, I sensed those dark green eyes staring at me from behind, until the closed door blocked my view.
Dusk had fallen when I led my horse through the city gates .
But the Temple City remained as bustling and prosperous as ever.
Monston, situated in the south of the Xilan Continent, was one of the three great powers of the continent, alongside the Northern Alliance to the north and the Holy Empire to the east. Although other small kingdoms existed on the Xilan Continent, they were no match for the former three in terms of power, struggling to survive in the cracks—such as the Kingdom of Bialel.
Temple City was located in the center of Monston, bordering the vast Mirror Lake to the north. The Temple Palace, hailed as the guardian of humanity's holy path, sat on Temple Island in the middle of the lake.
This is how Temple City got its name.
After more than four hundred years of meticulous development by the Monston Empire, Temple City had become the most prosperous and developed commercial metropolis on the Xilan Continent. Every day, merchants flocked to the city, their carriages and horses bustling, countless goods being transported by land and the Momatis River, which originates from Lake Mirror, to all corners of the continent.
Walking the streets, one could see both wealthy commoners and foreigners everywhere—a scene I had never witnessed elsewhere.
Perhaps because of the surrounding palaces and mansions, so magnificent and imposing, Duke Jinsha's villa in the Temple City was inconspicuous, even somewhat shabby and dilapidated, quietly hidden behind a grove of trees.
In the last rays of twilight, I saw the villa's gates tightly closed, the entrance appearing desolate, with only two rows of silver-armored guards standing imposingly on the stone steps.
More than a month had passed since the night battle in the Gobi Desert; Debo and Alanzo should have arrived in the capital long ago.
Duke Jinsha's villa in the Temple City was likely their only place to stay.
However, why did I vaguely sense something amiss about the villa's atmosphere? It seemed somewhat gloomy and desolate.
I slowly walked up the steps, and a guard immediately shouted to stop me, "Halt! What are you doing?"
I calmly replied, "I am Prince Xiu Lan of Bialer, and I wish to see General Debo."
Upon hearing this, the guard walked up to me, looked me up and down for a long time, and sneered, "Where did you come from, you fraudster? You don't even know that Prince Xiu Lan has been dead for over a month, yet you dare to impersonate him? Get lost!"
I was startled, immediately realizing that I had been missing for many days and, in everyone's mind, had died that night on the Gobi Desert.
I coldly stared at the guard and said, "Whether I'm a fraud or not, you can see for yourself by having General Debo come out."
"General Debo is not in the manor!"
"He went out?" I asked, knowing that Debo was indeed unlikely to stay home at night.
"Don't you know? Because of Prince Xiu Lan's matter, His Majesty has had General Debo arrested and imprisoned for over half a month. He cannot see you now, so get lost."
Debo was arrested? It seems my matter has implicated quite a few people.
I gave a wry smile and said, "Then others are fine too, like Fia, Alanzo, and Yuriru?"
The guard's face showed impatience, and he shoved me, saying, "What's with the nonsense? Get out of here or you'll get a beating!"
A cold glint flashed in my eyes, and I stood rooted to the spot.
"I've been very patient today. If you don't want to go in and report, I'll make you crawl in."
The guard trembled under my gaze and involuntarily took two steps back. But he quickly recovered and cursed, "Bastard, you want to die?"
I snorted coldly and punched him in the face before he could strike.
Instantly, blood streamed down his face, and he screamed as he collapsed to the ground.
I hadn't used my full strength out of respect for Duke Jinsha and Debo; otherwise, he wouldn't even have had the right to scream.
The other guards, caught off guard, quickly drew their swords and surrounded me. One guard swiftly opened the side door and ran in to report.
Although there were more than ten of them, all highly trained silver-armored guards, they were utterly insignificant in my eyes. Their skills were at most at the level of a Yellow Knight; even twice their number wouldn't be enough to defeat me.
I moved bare-handed, like a ghost, through the chilling sword light, the sharp blades barely touching my clothes. Instead, with every punch I threw, a silver-armored guard would fall to the ground in agony.
While I didn't want to kill them, as the price for stopping me, they would at least have to stay in bed for another month.
"Stop!"
When the Duke of Jinsha's powerful and authoritative voice rang out, seven or eight silver-armored guards were already lying on the ground, the rest looking disheveled and panting heavily.
"Duke Jinsha?" I looked up at Duke Jinsha standing before the gate, a slight surprise in my heart. Perhaps it was because of Debo's matter that he was forced to come to the capital to try to rescue his eldest son from prison.
"Your Highness Xiulan?" When Duke Jinsha saw my face clearly, he couldn't help but show a shocked and surprised expression. He walked closer to me in disbelief, and after looking me over repeatedly for a long time, he exclaimed with joy, "It really is you, you're not dead?"
"Of course it's me," I said with a faint smile, "If I were dead, who would be standing in front of you?"
"That's wonderful!" Duke Jinsha excitedly put his hands on my shoulders and said, "The thing I've felt most guilty about these days is not being able to protect you and failing His Majesty's entrustment. Now that I see you return safely, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief."
I smiled slightly, thinking that he should be even happier that Debo is also safe and sound, right?
"Xiulan!"
As soon as the voice called, Feiya's hot and delicate body rushed into my arms without caring about anything else, completely ignoring the fact that Duke Jinsha was standing right in front of her.
I hugged her, gazing down at her face.
In just over a month, Feiya's once stunningly beautiful face had become much more haggard. She looked up at me with joy, tears silently streaming down her bright eyes.
Duke Jinsha coughed softly and said, "Your Highness Xiulan, shall we go into the mansion?"
I nodded and gently released Feiya.
She looked at Duke Jinsha somewhat awkwardly and whispered, "I'm sorry, Dad. I was just too excited to see Xiulan." She wouldn't leave my side even as she spoke.
Duke Jinsha shook his head and smiled wryly, clearly helpless with his beloved daughter.
My gaze, however, fell on Xihanya, Anludi, Alanzo, Yuriru, Feibing, and Roy standing at the door.
Each of them looked at me with joy, even the usually aloof Feibing had a smile in her eyes. Anludi's eyes seemed to be spitting fire, and although Xihanya tried to control herself, her slightly trembling body still revealed her inner excitement.
I walked over, and Xi Hanya cried out with tears in her eyes, "Master, you've finally returned!"
Roy, wiping away tears, said excitedly, "Master, I failed to protect you. Please punish me!"
"No, I am the master's chief guard! Please punish me!" Yurilu shouted, even this iron-willed warrior seemed overjoyed and excited.
"Master," Alanzo said calmly, bowing slightly.
I glanced indifferently at my subordinates, a faint sense of emotion rising in my heart.
Is this what they call loyalty and righteousness?
Can I believe in it?
An Ludi suddenly brought her alluring face close to my ear and whispered, "Master, I have waited for you for a month and four days. Tonight, I will dedicate all my passion to you!"
My heart warmed, but then I heard Duke Jinsha's hearty laughter: "Give the order to prepare another banquet! We must celebrate properly!"
Everyone responded with a roar, filling the air with a festive atmosphere.
The moon quietly rose, its bright silver light bathing everyone's smiling faces.
Chapter Two: Night Audience with the Lord.
The hall was brightly lit and filled with laughter.
My safe return dispelled the gloom that had shrouded Beppu for days, and everyone seemed to have rediscovered joy.
During the feast, Alanzo briefly recounted his experience that night with Yuriru and Febing. I then learned that of the leaders who had surrounded Chago, apart from the alluring woman whom I had personally dealt with, the other three had all succumbed to the terrifying eruption of "Darkness of Annihilation."
Fortunately, Alanzo, using the unique intuition of a human archmage, sensed the approaching danger early and preemptively activated the high-level wind-based defensive spell "Wind Barrier." However, even the most outstanding human archmage could not withstand the power of "Darkness of Annihilation." "Wind Barrier" was ultimately breached by the powerful dark energy, and Alanzo and the other two fell unconscious, severely injured.
What happened next was told to me by Roy. When they followed Debo's 1,000 cavalrymen in their charge to Chago's camp, a sudden rumble of thunder filled the sky. While everyone was still in shock, lightning suddenly cleaved the heavens.
A black bolt of lightning struck down, followed by a burst of black light erupting from the camp.
In an instant, the sky seemed to collapse, the mountains and rivers darkened, and the Gobi Desert beneath their feet trembled violently, as if the end of the world had arrived. People stared blankly as the black light spread outwards, instantly engulfing the entire camp.
Strangely, no sound could be heard; only the black light continuously devoured everything around them.
The scene was eerie and terrifying; even now, Roy's voice trembles as he recounts it.
The soldiers began to flee, and the other two Black Flag Regiments, having heard the news, also lost all will to fight and scattered desperately.
What was expected to be a bloody battle was averted by this sudden catastrophe—was it a stroke of luck or misfortune?
The black fog gradually dissipated as dawn broke. General Debo led his regrouped troops back to the Black Flag Regiment's camp to search for me and Alanzo.
However, the scene was one of carnage, a veritable hell
on earth. Although the sun had risen, the smoke and black fog lingered over the camp, keeping it shrouded in darkness.
Debo and his men found the wounded and unconscious Alanzo and two others in the ruins, but they couldn't find me until nightfall. It seemed I, like Chago and the others, had turned to dust.
Debo wanted to give up, but Feiya, Xihanya, Anludi, and the others insisted on continuing the search. So, they lingered in the ruins for another two days before finally despairing.
When they arrived at the Temple City in profound sorrow, the Templar Knights waiting at the city gates, acting on His Majesty Jiaxiu's orders, bound and imprisoned Debo and his five commanders before he could even enter the city.
More than half a month has passed since then.
Of course, I was also asked about my rescue. I didn't reveal that I had unleashed the "Darkness of Annihilation," instead claiming that the mysterious stone house owner had used powerful dark magic to rescue me from the Black Flag Legion's encirclement. Because I was also injured, I had been delayed for some time, only arriving in the capital today.
No one, including Alanzo, doubted my account. Although they had all witnessed my formidable strength, they simply couldn't believe that such terrifying ultimate dark magic could have come from me, while those who witnessed it were long gone. After all, it surpassed human limits; even the elders of the temple probably couldn't have accomplished it.
Therefore, my explanation seemed more reasonable. The conversation naturally shifted from me to the enigmatic stone house owner.
Alanzo frowned and said, "What exactly is the identity of the owner of that stone house? If it was truly him who unleashed the ultimate dark magic, his cultivation would be beyond the reach of even black wizards. Who possesses such terrifying power?"
The crowd exchanged silent glances, and I saw a hint of coldness in their eyes—if the owner of the stone house truly possessed such terrifying power, wreaking havoc would be an easy matter for him. Unless the elders of the temple intervened, no one could escape this calamity.
I sneered inwardly. Faced with power far greater than themselves, humans mostly think of how to hide and seek refuge, forgetting that they can strive to become equally powerful to confront it directly.
Roy spoke up, "Regardless, he saved our master, so he shouldn't have any ill intentions towards us, right?"
I calmly replied, "We can discuss the identity of the stone house's owner and why he saved me later. What I'm concerned about now is who ordered the Black Flag Gang to kill me, even going so far as to mobilize a cavalry force of thousands?"
Everyone stared at me in shock again. Duke Jinsha asked doubtfully, "Your Highness, are you saying that the Black Flag Gang's target isn't Debo, but you?"
I sneered, "I personally saw Chago holding my portrait and offering a bounty of ten thousand gold coins to his men to kill me. He and I have never had any grudges or connections, so why would he do this?" (
Flashback) That night, Alanzo suddenly realized, "No wonder he could name his master so easily, so that's how it is."
Yuriru snorted, "It must be that scoundrel Kaolan; only he would want to kill his master so badly."
Fei Bing shook his head, "Kaolan might have had that intention, but with his strength, he doesn't seem capable of commanding the Black Flag Gang. Besides, how could he have known our whereabouts so precisely and contacted Chago so early?"
An Ludi asked, "Then who else could it be?" Alanzo
sighed, "It's a pity that Chago and several important leaders are dead, otherwise we could find the answer from them."
I smiled coldly and remained silent, my gaze falling on Duke Jinsha's face.
Duke Jinsha's... A flicker of doubt and skepticism crossed his eyes, and I knew he already had his answer.
Whoever it was, to command three or four thousand men from the Black Flag Gang, they must possess immense power in Monston. I was even more suspicious that even if the Black Flag Gang was known as Monston's premier bandit group, they shouldn't have at least three or four thousand cavalrymen.
Men and horses are different; three or four thousand men can be recruited in a day or two, but three or four thousand well-trained warhorses are definitely not something that can be achieved overnight. Moreover, maintaining such enormous logistical costs requires substantial financial support.
I didn't believe that no one was secretly supporting the Black Flag Gang. It's quite a spectacle to see them in such a state today.
Considering the Black Flag Gang's long-standing dominance in Monston, their power undiminished despite repeated suppressions, the reason is not hard to understand.
There are definitely no more than ten people in Monston with such strength.
Besides His Majesty Jiaxiu, his three princes are the prime suspects.
Therefore, Duke Jinsha's unusual shock is understandable.
However, what I also cannot understand is why the person behind the Black Flag Gang would want to kill me?
But at least it shouldn't be for power struggles, because with my status, I could never threaten their position.
Duke Jinsha said in a deep voice, "Whoever it is, if they fail this time, they will definitely try again. Your Highness must be careful in your future travels and must not make any more mistakes."
I smiled and said, "I understand, but I am truly sorry to have implicated the Duke and General Debo."
Duke Jinsha snorted and said, "Your Highness need not take it to heart. The Black Flag Gang has always been my mortal enemy. Although Chago is dead this time, his remnants still exist, and I will not let them go no matter what!" "
I knew my plan had worked—the Duke of Jinsha had made it clear that he stood with me. Although he didn't say it explicitly, we both knew who the so-called remnants were. Of
course, he wasn't standing up for me; he was furious that the other party had completely disregarded Debo's life and his own reputation, intercepting and killing me under his protection.
For this powerful figure who ruled over a region, this was undoubtedly a great insult and offense. Even if the other party was truly a royal prince or a high-ranking court official, the Duke of Jinsha might not let it go easily.
And one way he would oppose me was to protect me, even to the point of fully supporting me in the Monston court.
I pretended to be relaxed and said, 'Let's not talk about that. How is General Debo doing now?'
When his son was mentioned, the Duke of Jinsha suddenly became deflated. He sighed and said, 'What else can he do? He's been imprisoned for more than half a month, and His Majesty hasn't said what to do with him.'"
I chuckled inwardly, knowing that His Majesty would never kill the beloved son of a high-ranking official for the sake of a so-called grandson in distress. He was merely putting on a show, waiting for an opportunity to back down. "
Duke, didn't you plead with His Majesty?" I asked.
"Plead for what?" Duke Jinsha replied. "It was all because of his dereliction of duty. If Your Highness were truly killed, I myself would have no face to see His Majesty, let alone plead for you."
I smiled slightly and said, "In that case, why don't we go to the palace immediately to see His Majesty and ask him to release General Debo?"
Duke Jinsha's eyes lit up, and he continued, "Your Highness, you've traveled a long way; you should rest early. Going to see His Majesty tomorrow morning is the same. Anyway, you've returned safely, so there's no rush."
I smiled and said, "No need. If His Majesty hasn't rested early, we should go immediately."
Duke Jinsha knew that I was doing this so that Debo could return home soon, and he said gratefully, "Then I'll trouble Your Highness." I
rose calmly, knowing that from now on I would have a powerful ally behind me, no longer a powerless prince in distress.
Monston Palace was located in the very center of Temple City, where two major thoroughfares converged.
In the night, the palace resembled a colossal beast crouching on the earth, majestic and imposing.
Duke Jinsha and I waited briefly at the palace's main gate before being summoned by His Majesty Jiaxiu. It was said that he had just finished dinner and, upon hearing of my safe arrival, immediately ordered a meeting in his private study.
After passing through three tight security checkpoints… Only after the inspection did I enter the study with Duke Jinsha.
In the bright light, an elderly man with white hair sat dignified behind his desk, his piercing gaze fixed on me from the moment I stepped into the room.
Although he appeared somewhat aged, his composed and imposing demeanor still evoked memories of his former heroic spirit.
I knew he was one of the most influential figures on the Xilan Continent—Emperor Jiaxiu of Mengston.
No further questions were needed; a single glance was enough to ascertain that he exuded an aura that no one else could match. He possessed the aura of a king.
A middle-aged man sat respectfully to his side, dressed in magnificent royal robes, but compared to Xiu Jia, he was like a firefly in the sun, insignificant.
What caught my attention was a middle-aged man standing behind His Majesty Jia Xiu. His clothing was unusually simple, almost indistinguishable from a commoner on the street.
He was of medium height and ordinary appearance, seemingly unremarkable at first glance.
However, I noticed his gaze—only his gaze revealed a slight flaw.
As I entered the study, seemingly intentionally, I exchanged a silent glance with him.
His previously dim eyes suddenly flashed with a sharp light, which did not escape my notice.
My heart skipped a beat; I immediately understood that the middle-aged man standing behind His Majesty Jia Xiu was a master among masters. Even with Yuriru's strength, he probably couldn't withstand ten moves from his sword.
Even more terrifying was his restrained aura, indicating that this person had reached a state of returning to simplicity; even the so-called holy knights of the mortal world might not be able to contend with him.
Such an extraordinary figure could only exist in one place—the Temple!
"Your Majesty!" The Duke of Jinsha
knelt on the ground, his imposing figure gleaming, and said respectfully, "Your subject has brought Prince Xiulan."
"Xiu Lan?" His Majesty Jiaxiu's voice was aged and hoarse, yet still possessed an irresistible majesty: "It has been a full nineteen years since you were born, and this is the first time I have seen my own grandson."
A faint smile played on my lips as I replied, "Perhaps I should thank Kaolan; if it weren't for him, I might not have been able to see Your Majesty even in another nineteen years."
"Xiu Lan, why don't you kneel down to answer?" the middle-aged man sitting upright hissed in a low voice. I glanced coldly at his pale and haggard face, made pale by his extravagance, and remained silent.
"No need. There are no outsiders here; everyone should sit down and talk," His Majesty Jiaxiu said gently.
We sat down in the designated empty seats, and His Majesty Jiaxiu sighed softly: "Thank you for your kind words, Xiu Lan. However, I am already seventy years old, and I'm afraid I won't live for another nineteen years. When one grows old, it's time to make room for the younger generation."
His tone carried a hint of a hero's decline, but I was trying to decipher the meaning behind his words.
Sure enough, the middle-aged man said in a panic, "Father, please don't say that. Your living to be a hundred years old is the happiest thing for me."
If I'm not mistaken, he should be one of the three princes who are most likely to inherit the throne. Judging from his appearance and demeanor, he might be the eldest prince, Ote.
Duke Jinsha hurriedly added, "Your Majesty is in excellent health. Living past nineteen, or even a hundred, is no problem."
Emperor Jiaxiu laughed heartily, "No need for such flattery, Ote. It's rare for someone to live to my age; I've never heard of anyone living past a hundred except for the elders of the Temple. Besides, I'm not afraid of death, and I'm getting a little tired of this position after forty years."
"Father?"
"Your Majesty!"
"Xiu Lan, what do you think?" Jiaxiu ignored Ote and Duke Jinsha, turning his gaze to me affectionately, asking, "I heard you almost died once. Tell me, is death really that terrible?"
I calmly replied, "Death isn't terrible, Your Majesty. What's terrible is living a life worse than death, being a walking corpse."
"Well said!" Jiaxiu's eyes shone with admiration as he loudly praised, "Truly worthy of being my descendant, Jiaxiu! At such a young age, you've already seen through the ways of life and death."
My face showed no pride. In my heart, I had always rejected the identity of Xiu Lan, and of course, I could never truly consider Jiaxiu my maternal grandfather.
Despite his status as the emperor of the empire, in my eyes he was no different from anyone else.
The only thing that moved me was his magnanimity and bearing—only such a person deserved to be a king.
"It's a pity your mother won't be able to see what's happening today," Jiaxiu suddenly sighed deeply. "She was one of my most beloved daughters, but she died young, less than a year after giving birth to you. Otherwise, she would be thirty-six years old this year."
If I remember correctly, the late King Morent of Biarell was at least sixty years old. Jiaxiu claimed to love his daughter, yet he married her off to a man more than twenty years his senior, all for political reasons.
Otte, standing to the side, feigned concern, saying, "Father even remembers our third sister's age; it truly moves us children."
Jiaxiu smiled and said, "Didn't you also remember my seventieth birthday and plan a grand celebration?"
Otte quickly replied, "This is our filial duty."
Emperor Jiaxiu's gaze returned to me, and he said, "When I heard the news of your accident, I could hardly sleep for days. You are the only bloodline your mother left in this world. If I can't even protect you, what is there for me, the Emperor of Monston, to boast about?"
I thought to myself, perhaps that last sentence was Jiaxiu's true thought?
"The Black Flag Regiment attacked you?" Emperor Jiaxiu said. "I have already ordered Marquis John, Governor of Lester County, to purge the remaining members of the Black Flag Regiment within a specified period. Although Chago is dead, that was merely his good fortune. I will not let any of the other remnants go."
Duke Jinsha said, "Your Majesty, according to my latest information, the Black Flag Regiment's real target is actually Prince Xiulan. Their leader, Chago, once offered a reward of ten thousand gold coins for Prince Xiulan's portrait."
A cold glint flashed in Jiaxiu's eyes as he stared at Duke Jinsha and said, "Is this true? Are you sure?"
Even someone as powerful as Duke Jinsha lowered his head, not daring to meet his gaze, but answered with certainty, "I am certain."
Jiaxiu pondered, "The Black Flag Regiment has never had any dealings with Biarell. Why would they involve Xiulan?"
Suddenly, he gave a cold snort, clearly having realized something. But on the surface, he remained nonchalant, saying, "I will send someone to investigate this matter. But Xiu Lan, what are your plans for the future?"
I calmly replied, "I will obey Your Majesty's orders."
Jia Xiu slowly said, "Twenty days ago, Kaolan of Biarell held his coronation ceremony. At that time, I thought you were no longer alive, so I sent an envoy to attend, which was tantamount to acknowledging him. Now that you have returned safely, I should have sent troops to avenge you and restore your kingdom, but—"
"I understand," his words were exactly what I expected, and I said calmly, "I can wait for the restoration of the kingdom, and I don't want to accomplish it through others. I will personally retrieve Kaolan's head." Emperor
Jia Xiu seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, laughing heartily, "Good, that's spirited! If you wish to restore your kingdom in the future, just ask me for anything, and I will do my best to help you."
"Thank you, Your Majesty!" I bowed slightly. Although Emperor Jia Xiu's words sounded touching, they did not actually harm him in the slightest. If one day I were to restore my kingdom on my own, the most he could offer would be logistical support.
If the restoration were successful, he would essentially regain a friendly vassal state without losing a single soldier; otherwise, he would suffer no loss whatsoever.
His Majesty Jiaxiu sighed, "You are my grandson. I am already uneasy that I cannot lead the army to restore the country and avenge you. Why are you thanking me? Fortunately, you understand that even the ruler of the empire has difficulties that cannot be told to outsiders. In fact, I should be thanking you."
As if remembering something, His Majesty Jiaxiu added, "It seems you will be staying in Monston for a while. I need to make some arrangements for you."
Duke Jinsha said, "Your Majesty, Prince Xiulan and his subordinates are staying at my residence. I will take good care of them."
His Majesty Jiaxiu smiled and said, "That's not what I meant. You misunderstood. Let me think about how to arrange things for Xiulan tonight, and I will announce it at tomorrow's morning meeting."
Ote said with concern, "Father, it's getting late. You should rest."
His Majesty Jiaxiu nodded and said, "Alright, let's stop here for tonight. I haven't had such a pleasant conversation with someone in a long time.
Xiulan, Duke Jinsha will take you to tomorrow's morning meeting."
I paused, then nodded, "Yes, Your Majesty!" The
conversation ended there. When Duke Jinsha and I left the palace, the sky was filled with stars, and the night breeze brought a cool breeze to my face.
My life in the capital had begun; every day from now on would be a journey to fulfill my destiny.
Chapter Three: Duke Biarell
. A gentle night breeze rose, and the moon shone brightly.
Duke Jinsha and I rode side by side along the main road towards the Duke's villa in the east of the city. More than twenty silver-armored guards followed behind us, allowing us to converse privately.
There were far fewer pedestrians on the road than on the way there; the city of the Temple fell asleep as night deepened.
"It seems His Majesty admires you greatly," the Duke of Jinsha said leisurely, seated on his horse. "I rarely hear him praise anyone; even his princes are mostly reprimanded."
My face showed no hint of smugness as I calmly replied, "Perhaps His Majesty is simply in a good mood tonight."
"Seeing his grandson safe and sound, His Majesty is naturally happy," the Duke of Jinsha smiled. "It's rare for him to be in such a good mood tonight; I was truly afraid you would ask His Majesty to send troops to help you restore your kingdom."
“I’ve said it before, I will settle my own affairs.”
Duke Jinsha praised, “No wonder His Majesty praised your ambition. If it were anyone else, they would probably have already knelt down and begged.”
He then changed the subject, asking, “You just met Prince Ott. What did you think of him?”
Of course, I wouldn’t reveal my true thoughts, and replied indifferently, “I only met Prince Ott once, and we didn’t even speak. I can’t make any judgments.”
Duke Jinsha said leisurely, “Prince Ott is His Majesty’s eldest son. According to royal custom, His Majesty should pass the throne to him after His Majesty’s death. However, His Majesty has still not confirmed the heir apparent. Do you know why?”
I replied, “When you were in Redstone City, you said that Prince Ott’s abilities were somewhat mediocre compared to the other two princes, and His Majesty didn’t seem to like him.”
“Indeed,” Duke Jinsha nodded, “Compared to His Highnesses Aden and Mustin, Prince Ote is far inferior. Many of the court officials also do not favor him, but he is, after all, the eldest son, and has the support of the Temple. The throne will most likely still pass to him in the future. I am telling you this so that Your Highness will be careful to maintain a good relationship with Prince Ote in the future—not too close to avoid arousing the suspicion of the other princes, and certainly not to neglect him to sow the seeds of future trouble.”
I vaguely sensed Duke Jinsha's inclination towards the three princes, but still asked, “With your insight and understanding, which prince do you support?”
Duke Jinsha smiled wryly and said, “I am an official stationed in a remote region, and the most taboo thing for me is to get involved in the royal family's struggles. For a warrior like me, the only one I must support and be loyal to is His Majesty the Emperor.”
Appearances can be deceiving; behind Duke Jinsha's rugged and unrestrained exterior lies wisdom and intelligence far beyond that of ordinary people.
His two short sentences were watertight and left no trace.
Suddenly, a warning bell rang in my mind—ever since absorbing the dark energy from the Wheel of Silence, I had possessed this intuition for danger. At that moment, a strange murderous intent and anxiety surged within me again.
I casually glanced around; we were turning into a relatively quiet street, and apart from a carriage slowly approaching from the opposite direction, there was no one else in sight.
I whispered a warning, "Duke, watch out for that carriage."
The Duke was startled, and before he could reply, the carriage doors suddenly opened, and two masked men in black emerged from the doors on either side, firing six emerald-green throwing knives in rapid succession.
The cold blades whistled sharply, faster than lightning tearing through the night.
All six knives were aimed at Duke Jinsha.
If it weren't for my warning, facing such a sudden, close-range assassination attempt, Duke Jinsha might have been in serious trouble. Fortunately, he had received the warning; upon seeing the carriage doors open, he nimbly hid under his horse.
All six throwing knives missed their mark, disappearing into the darkness. One of them struck a silver-armored guard who couldn't dodge in time.
Seeing that the knives had failed to kill Duke Jinsha, everyone in the carriage was startled. Only the coachman at the front leaped into the air, swooping down on Duke Jinsha like a great bird. Mid-air, he had already drawn his sword, its cold light flashing, a murderous aura filling the air.
"Assassin!"
the silver-armored guards shouted, drawing their swords in preparation for the rescue. But unexpectedly, a dense chorus of bowstrings sounded from both sides of the street, countless arrows raining down, instantly felling several silver-armored guards.
Duke Jinsha quickly rolled onto the cobblestone ground, the coachman's longsword relentlessly pursuing him.
"Pop!"
I calmly sat back on my horse, flicking my whip. The silver-threaded whip rope, like a nimble little snake, precisely wrapped around the longsword.
This move, seemingly simple, required lightning-fast precision in angle, speed, and timing. Even among the masters of the entire Xilan Continent, few could execute it with such effortless ease. But for me, it felt like an innate instinct, requiring no thought or choice.
Of course, I couldn't let Duke Jinsha die; he was a powerful ally for Monston.
The coachman was quite skilled. Seeing my whip lock onto my longsword, he swiftly flicked his wrist and let out a low shout, unleashing a powerful burst of internal energy to try and knock the whip away.
I smiled coldly, my dark energy surging forth. Though weaker than before my injury, it was more than enough to deal with the coachman.
Sure enough, he cried out in surprise; his attack couldn't withstand the overwhelming counterattack of the dark energy, instead being swept away and flowing back into his body.
A flash of blue light appeared on the coachman's face, and the longsword in his hand snapped in two by his inner energy, severing the medium for the transmission of dark energy.
Even so, he still had to stagger back to dissipate the aftershocks.
I saw a trickle of blood escape from the corner of his mouth.
The two masked men on the carriage also leaped forward, their target still Duke Jinsha.
Only then did I witness Duke Jinsha's true strength, realizing that even if I hadn't intervened, the assassin might not have been able to harm him.
Duke Jinsha hadn't even drawn his sword, yet he had forced the two masked assassins into a sorry state, on the verge of death, with only his bare hands.
His moves were wide and sweeping, devoid of finesse, yet brimming with domineering power, leaving them utterly intimidated.
Undoubtedly, Duke Jinsha had reached the level of a Holy Knight, and even Yuriru, known as the Tiger of Biarell, was no match for him. This also showed that Monston's dominance of the continent was not due to luck.
Seemingly sensing the assassination attempt had failed, the coachman glared at me with venomous eyes, tossed aside his broken sword, and hissed, "Withdraw!"
His voice trailed off as he vanished into the darkness of the rooftops beside the street.
"Ah—"
a masked assassin screamed in agony, his chest caved in by a heavy punch from the Duke of Jinsha, his life ending instantly.
Another masked assassin, ignoring his companion's fate, slipped into a nearby alley.
With a flick of my wrist, the broken sword wrapped around my whip flashed with a chilling light, plunging into his calf, the blade emerging from the flesh, stained with blood.
He groaned and collapsed, two silver-armored guards swiftly pounced on him.
At this moment, the street returned to silence; the archers hidden on either side had also retreated sometime earlier.
But in that single attack, three silver-armored guards had already been killed, and five or six more were wounded.
"Your Grace, the assassin has committed suicide by poison!"
a silver-armored guard exclaimed in surprise. Duke Jinsha and I approached, and by the moonlight, we gazed at his face, which had been veiled, and a trickle of black, poisonous blood was gushing from the corner of his tightly closed mouth.
"It's a pity we didn't capture him alive," Duke Jinsha said bitterly.
"Do you know who did it?" I asked.
Duke Jinsha's eyes flashed with murderous intent and anger. He snorted, "How many people would dare to assassinate me in the capital?"
I remained silent, but I understood the meaning behind his words.
The rapid sound of hooves approached; the capital's patrols had arrived.
It was late at night when I returned to the Duke's residence. After the terrifying assassination attempt, Duke Jinsha received good news before even entering the gates—Debo had been released and returned home.
During the audience with His Majesty Jiaxiu, no one mentioned Debo's situation, but everyone understood.
My return was the most satisfactory outcome; Jiaxiu would naturally release Debo immediately to appease his important ministers.
A smile finally appeared on Duke Jinsha's gloomy and depressed face as he strode towards the living room.
Before I even entered, I heard Debo's loud voice, naturally talking about his experiences in prison.
"Debo!" Duke Jinsha called out as he strode into the living room.
"Father!" Debo stood up from his chair. More than half a month in prison had not made him haggard; on the contrary, he appeared quite plump. It seems the warden, intimidated by Duke Jinsha's formidable reputation, dared not neglect Debo.
Duke Jinsha grasped Debo's hand, scrutinizing him closely, and murmured, "It's good you're back."
His paternal affection was palpable.
I looked around the reception hall and found everyone except Alanzo and Feibing.
Xihanya and the others smiled with delight upon seeing me, saying, "Master, you're back?"
Debo saw me, released Duke Jinsha's hand, and walked over, smiling, "Your Highness Xiulan, it's a good thing you're alive, otherwise we'd only meet in Heaven."
Feiya scoffed, "Xiulan will certainly go to Heaven in the future, as for brother, he should first pay off the debts of those beauties you seduced."
Debo smiled bitterly, "It's so unfair, she's clearly my own sister, yet she's helping others criticize me. It seems I should just get married sooner rather than later."
"Brother!" This time, Feiya's face immediately turned red, and she secretly glanced at me.
Everyone smiled kindly, and I saw Duke Jinsha's expression shift slightly, as if he had thought of something.
We sat down again and chatted for a while, but as weariness gradually crept in, we finally dispersed, reluctant to leave.
Like a cheerful little bird, Feiya led me into the guest room the Duke of Jinsha had just arranged for me, followed by Xihanya and Anludi.
As soon as Anludi closed the door, Feiya pounced on me like the wind, throwing me onto the soft, comfortable bed.
She stared at my face fiercely and said, "Xiulan, how dare you abandon me for over a month! See how I punish you!"
Anludi giggled, "Don't be so fierce. Xihanya and I can both testify; you've cried the most these past few days."
Feiya blushed and huffed, "No, it's Xihanya who cried the most. I don't even dare mention Xiulan's name in front of her."
Xihanya said shyly, "Feiya, why are you making fun of me?"
Feiya wanted to say something more, but my lips sealed hers.
I hadn't touched a woman for over a month. Strangely, when I didn't see them, I didn't feel any longing for them, and I rarely even thought about them.
To me, women were merely one of the spoils of war I had conquered. I needed their loyalty, but I wouldn't feel any attachment to them.
But when Feiya's hot, delicate body pressed against mine, and I smelled that familiar, youthful fragrance again, my heart involuntarily warmed.
It wasn't a lustful impulse, but a different, inexplicable feeling.
A feeling I had never had before, never experienced before.
It was as if something precious, lost for so many days, had finally returned to my hands.
How could I feel this way?
I was somewhat bewildered. I seemed to be born indifferent to everything, including my own life, so why did I suddenly have this strange feeling?
"Xiu Lan, possess me!" Feiya suddenly used all her strength to hug me tightly and cried out passionately, her beautiful, delicate face rippled with uncontrollable passion.
My desire was suddenly aroused. I rolled over and pinned Feiya beneath me, savoring her delicate, fragrant tongue, my hands slipping inside her clothes.
Feiya didn't resist, closing her eyes in a daze, soft moans escaping her cute little nose.
An Ludi suddenly embraced me from behind, rubbing her full breasts against my back, saying, "Master, we've finally waited for you to return!"
My lust surged, and I pulled Xi Hanya down onto the bed as well, rudely and decisively commanding, "No one is allowed to slip away tonight. I want you all to moan and pant beneath me until dawn!"
My pent-up desire finally erupted like a flood, engulfing the three women in a frenzied, passionate night. As
dawn broke, Duke Jinsha and I, fully dressed, headed to the palace for the morning court assembly, escorted by silver-armored guards.
After last night's events, the number of guards accompanying me doubled, and the crisp sound of horses' hooves clattering on the cobblestone streets was exceptionally serene.
At this time, the three women in the guest rooms of the villa were probably still fast asleep, exhausted from last night's fierce battle, too weak even to speak, only able to let out soft, contented breaths.
My spirit, however, grew ever stronger. The moment Xihanya and the others completely opened themselves to me, I once again reached a state of utter absorption, the dark energy within me merging with the energy wandering in the universe, finally being absorbed back into my body.
This experience was indescribable; I felt as if I were instantly soaring, flying like the wind through the black night.
Therefore, although the three women were exhausted, I appeared even more radiant.
There weren't many people attending the court's morning assembly, but they were all His Majesty Jiaxiu's confidants and important ministers.
Among these people, my status was somewhat special.
Although I was His Majesty Jiaxiu's grandson, I held no official position in the Mengsdon court, and without His Majesty Jiaxiu's special permission, I wouldn't have been able to attend.
As I stood in the last row, my gaze passing over the dignitaries before me and finally landing on the lofty Emperor Jiaxiu of Monston, a powerful, inexplicable desire surged within me.
One day, I would stand even higher, not just in Biarel and Monston, but the entire continent would grovel at my feet.
I would stand like the god I saw in my nightmares, atop the highest mountain, atop the clouds, surveying the world with unparalleled power and dominance.
I would fulfill my destiny, reclaim my memories.
When I could one day shed my identity as Prince Xiu Lan, I would make the world understand who I truly am.
"Xiu Lan, my grandson, come before me."
Emperor Jiaxiu's majestic yet compassionate voice echoed in the hall, interrupting my reverie.
I calmly stepped out from the crowd, past the nobles before me, and stood before Emperor Jiaxiu's dragon throne.
"Your Majesty!"
My body stood as firm as a mountain; even Jiaxiu could not make me bow my head.
A hint of admiration flashed in Jiaxiu's eyes.
No one dared to raise their voices like Prince Ott had the night before. Only His Majesty Jiaxiu's voice echoed in the hall: "Xiu Lan, when I heard that my son-in-law had been vilely murdered by Kaolan, and that my grandson was being hunted everywhere, my only thought was to mobilize the million-strong army of Monston, crush Biarell, capture Kaolan alive to avenge my son-in-law, and seek justice for my grandson. But I didn't actually do that. Do you know why?"
I calmly replied, "Because you are the Emperor of Monston!"
Everyone in the hall looked astonished, except for a middle-aged prince standing beside Prince Ott, whose eyes flashed with a profound and unfathomable light.
Earlier, Duke Jinsha had pointed him out to me.
Prince Mustin—the one vying for the throne with Ott and Aden.
"Well said!" Emperor Jiaxiu slammed his hand on the armrest, sighing deeply. "I am the Emperor of Monston, the most powerful man in the eyes of the world. Yet, I cannot do as I please, for I must consider the millions of Monston's subjects, and the legacy passed down from my ancestors."
Prince Mustin looked thoughtful, as if he had grasped the meaning behind Emperor Jiaxiu's words.
Everyone else wore expressions of admiration and reverence, captivated by Emperor Jiaxiu's unparalleled magnanimity and spirit.
Only one person was an exception. Though his expression was calm, I noticed a complex, cold smile playing at the corners of his lips.
Prince Aden, known as the most ruthless of all the princes.
"Xiulan, you must rely on your own strength to restore your kingdom and avenge your father. Although such a goal seems unattainable now, I believe you can accomplish it—there is nothing that the descendants of Jiaxiu cannot do!"
Emperor Jiaxiu's voice possessed an undeniable power, even I was shaken by it.
I took a deep breath and calmly replied, "Your Majesty, rest assured, I will not fail your expectations. In your lifetime, I will ensure you witness the day when Biarel is restored!"
His Majesty Jiaxiu's sharp gaze lingered on me for a long time before he finally sighed, "How wonderful it would be if you were my grandson, not my grandson!"
Upon hearing this, everyone in the hall paled.
Otto's face revealed undisguised jealousy, Prince Aden's sneer became even more pronounced, while Mustin, on the contrary, smiled slightly.
My heart skipped a beat as I pondered the meaning behind His Majesty Jiaxiu's sudden sigh.
However, this was only the beginning.
His Majesty Jiaxiu's next words were even more earth-shattering: "Xiu Lan, in the name of Emperor Monston, I hereby bestow upon you the title of Duke of Bialer. You may reclaim the lands that originally belonged to you at any time. Once you become the King of Bialer, I will marry my most beloved granddaughter, Princess Jingyue, to you!"
The hall fell silent, except for my deep voice replying, "Thank you, Your Majesty!"
Chapter Four: Spring Breeze and Azure Clouds
. After the morning assembly, Duke Jinsha and I were summoned for an audience.
Thus, I entered His Majesty Jiaxiu's study for the second time.
Last night, I was a fallen prince of Bialer; now, my identity was that of Duke of Bialer, personally bestowed by Emperor Monston.
However, I felt no joy whatsoever.
Besides an empty title, I still possessed nothing.
Perhaps, there was still a promise regarding Princess Jingyue, just as I had done years ago by marrying my daughter to Bialer.
It was merely a transaction, and I had never even heard that woman's name before.
"Xiu Lan, were you and Duke Jinsha attacked by assassins after leaving the palace last night?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," I replied, not at all surprised that His Majesty Jiaxiu knew about this.
A cold glint flashed in His Majesty Jiaxiu's eyes; clearly, the assassins' almost provocative behavior had enraged Emperor Mengston.
"Duke Jinsha, were you the target of the assassins?"
"Yes, Your Majesty." Duke Jinsha replied in a deep voice, "Of the three assassins who appeared, only one escaped. Of the other two, I killed one, and the other committed suicide by poison."
"Who do you think did it?"
Duke Jinsha pondered, "Perhaps remnants of the Black Flag Gang?"
Emperor Jiaxiu sneered, "You really think so?"
Duke Jinsha smiled bitterly, "Although I don't believe that the remnants of the Black Flag Gang have the strength and audacity to assassinate me in the capital, I have no other enemies, and I really can't think of anyone else who would want to harm me?" Emperor
Jiaxiu slowly said, "Perhaps someone thinks your existence is an obstacle to them?"
Duke Jinsha was startled and said, "I only know to be loyal to Your Majesty and the Empire, and I have never thought of hindering anyone."
"No need for explanation, Duke Jinsha." His Majesty Jiaxiu waved his hand, his expression calm. "I know that you are the only one among the four dukes who supports Ote, because he is, after all, my eldest son, and has the assistance of the Temple. However, some people will be unhappy."
Duke Jinsha immediately knelt on one knee and said, "I am loyal only to Your Majesty. If Your Majesty passes away, I will only be loyal to the prince to whom Your Majesty will pass the throne." His
Majesty Jiaxiu smiled and said, "Get up. I have never doubted your loyalty, so you don't need to be afraid. I just want to know, who exactly wanted to assassinate you? You know, this person must have known that you entered the palace last night to be able to plan so calmly and meticulously, and almost succeed."
Duke Jinsha breathed a slight sigh of relief. Despite his status and arrogance, he remained respectful and low-key in front of His Majesty Jiaxiu, not daring to make the slightest mistake.
“Xiu Lan, do you know why I value this matter so much? Besides the fact that Duke Jinsha is a key minister of mine and the struggle for the crown prince position, what else is there?”
Faced with His Majesty Jiaxiu’s sudden question, I calmly replied, “There is a traitor in Your Majesty’s palace.”
“That’s right!” A glint flashed in His Majesty Jiaxiu’s eyes as he coldly said, “Ote wouldn’t have targeted Duke Jinsha, and he stayed with me until very late last night, so he had no chance to pass on the message. Unless someone else in the palace did it, I must find that person, or I won’t be able to sleep peacefully again.”
A resolute look appeared on Duke Jinsha’s face as he said in a deep voice, “Whoever he is, if he wants to kill me, I can let it go; but if he dares to lay a finger on Your Majesty, I swear I will tear him to pieces!”
His Majesty Jiaxiu smiled slightly, but there was a hint of sinister intent in his smile: “First General Debo and…” "Xiu Lan was attacked by assassins in Redstone City, then the Black Flag Gang launched a blatant attack, and last night they tried to assassinate a high-ranking imperial official right under my nose. Perhaps it was all the work of the same person, or perhaps not. Ultimately
, someone couldn't resist the urge to test whether I was getting old and infirm?" His gaze fell on me and Duke Jinsha, his tone becoming amiable again. "Don't worry, I've ordered a thorough investigation. We'll definitely get to the bottom of this and see who's behind it all."
I sneered inwardly. Regardless of whether His Majesty Jiaxiu could truly find out who was behind it all, the only real beneficiary in the end would undoubtedly be Prince Ote. As for His Highnesses Aden and Mustin, it was best to hope that His Majesty Jiaxiu hadn't suspected them.
"Xiu Lan, from today onwards, you are Duke Biarell of the Monston Empire. I will bestow upon you a garden in Temple City as your future residence. As for servants and maids, those already provided in the garden will also be given to you. If you have any complaints, please feel free to raise them with me."
My heart skipped a beat. It was almost unheard of for an emperor to bestow his own garden upon a subject, let alone a mere foreign prince who had just arrived.
What was His Majesty Jiaxiu's true intention in repeatedly showing me goodwill?
Perhaps it couldn't be explained simply by his admiration for me, but if he wanted to use me, what use was I?
I was merely Xiu Lan, formerly a kind and timid Prince Biarell.
Although my image had changed in the eyes of others due to my amnesia, I was still far inferior to the likes of Duke Jinsha.
I replied calmly, "I am already very satisfied, Your Majesty."
Emperor Jiaxiu said with emotion, "Right now, this is all I can do for you. Perhaps marrying you my most beloved granddaughter is to compensate for my regret that I cannot personally lead the army to restore your kingdom. However, Xiu Lan, from the first moment I saw you last night, I knew you were definitely not the kind of person the rumors portrayed. That kind of Xiu Lan would only make me look down on you. Do you know why?"
I did not answer directly, but slowly said, "Once you understand what kind of person Your Majesty is, you will understand why."
Emperor Jiaxiu laughed heartily and said admiringly, "Although you are fifty years younger than me, you are more like my confidant.
You rarely speak, but you never waste words. It is a real pleasure to chat with someone like you." He sat comfortably in his chair and continued leisurely, “
Some say you became what you are today because of amnesia. If that’s true, I think you should thank the person who stabbed you so badly. Xiu Lan, I believe you will definitely reclaim Biarell, even without my help. However, you must promise me that you will cherish Princess Jingyue. She is the junior I like and admire most besides you.”
I replied calmly, “Perhaps Princess Jingyue is not willing to marry me.”
“She will,” His Majesty Jiaxiu said with a smile, “I have that confidence. As for your former officials, they will still be under your command, and I will have their rewards arranged separately. Also, according to imperial custom, a duke of your status can be equipped with 500 silver-armored guards as attendants, and I have already had Ote arrange that for you.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty.”
“Let’s stop here for today,” His Majesty Jiaxiu said with a wry smile, “I still have to meet with envoys from several small countries later. Xiu Lan, I will send someone to pick you up tomorrow afternoon. Come with me to go fishing at Mirror Lake.”
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Duke Jinsha and I stood up, bowed, and left the study.
Just as we reached the study door, we heard Jiaxiu call out, "Duke Jinsha!"
"Your Majesty?" Duke Jinsha quickly replied.
"Remember, don't reveal the content of our conversation to anyone, not even Otto."
"Yes, Your Majesty!" [Collected and edited by Yunxiaoge]
Emperor Jiaxiu suddenly showed concern and said softly, "Be careful while you're in the capital, especially watch out for others' schemes. I don't want to lose a loyal minister like you."
Duke Jinsha said with emotion, "Thank you, Your Majesty. I will certainly protect my body and swear to be loyal to Your Majesty and the Empire to the death!"
"Xiulan, you be careful too."
I nodded, and Emperor Jiaxiu waved his hand gently, "Go."
Duke Jinsha and I left the study. After walking a while, Duke Jinsha said in a low voice, "Prince Xiulan, to be honest, even I am a little jealous of you now. I have served His Majesty for nearly thirty years and have never seen him like someone so much."
I said lightly, "Perhaps from now on you should call me Duke Xiulan, Duke Jinsha."
Duke Jinsha was taken aback, then smiled and said, "That's right, you are now Duke Biarell."
I smiled slightly, but suddenly felt something and turned around.
A young woman in a lake-blue cloud-like dress gracefully walked down the corridor I had just passed towards His Majesty Jiaxiu's study.
I only saw her back, but a strange tremor ran through me.
It was the most beautiful back I had ever seen; her noble and elegant demeanor and unparalleled grace were beyond the ability of even the greatest painter of the Xilan Continent to capture with a brush.
Although I hadn't seen her face, a strange intuition told me that the owner of this figure must possess breathtaking beauty and grace.
As if sensing my gaze, the stunning figure paused slightly but didn't turn around, disappearing at the end of the corridor.
"She is Princess Jingyue, hailed as the most beautiful woman in Monston, and even the continent," Duke Jinsha slowly said. "She is the only royal disciple accepted by the Palace Master in the Holy Temple Palace in nearly a hundred years, and the only successor to leave the Holy Temple Palace at the age of eighteen."
The Holy Temple Palace!
A chill ran through me. I hadn't expected to encounter its successor so soon, and she might even become my wife.
What had fate arranged for me?
And how should I change and face it?
After lunch at the Duke of Jinsha's villa, Roy excitedly rushed into the living room, shouting, "Master, Lord Wainritt of the Imperial Household Department is waiting outside for you to receive His Majesty Jiaxiu's new residence!"
Debo exclaimed in surprise, "So soon? I thought it would be at least after His Majesty's seventieth birthday."
Feiya exclaimed excitedly, "Great! Let's go visit Xiulan's new residence together!"
Everyone rose and came out of the living room. Wainritt, the head of the Imperial Household Department, dressed in a count's robe, greeted me with a smile, saying, "Duke Xiulan, His Majesty has ordered me to invite..." "You go and take over the temporary residence."
Debo asked, "Lord Winritt, shouldn't the things in the temporary residence be emptied?"
Winritt smiled and said, "His Majesty ordered that, except for items used exclusively by the royal family and some personal utensils that His Majesty particularly cherishes, everything else be transferred to Duke Xiulan. Therefore, the temporary residence was completed in half a morning, and Duke Xiulan can move in at any time."
Surrounded by many silver-armored guards, the group marched through half of the city, and Emperor Jiaxiu's temporary residence in the Temple City appeared before us.
The temporary residence was located on a small hill called "Diecui Hill" in the north of the city, surrounded by lush trees, quiet and elegant.
The plaque in front of the residence was engraved with the words "Diecui Garden" in gold lettering.
Walking into the residence, everyone was even more captivated by its exquisite and beautiful scenery. Although it could not compare with the palace in terms of grandeur, every plant, tree, brick and stone was crafted with ingenuity.
The most breathtaking sight is the "Lanjing Pavilion" in the back garden of the imperial garden, offering a panoramic view of the picturesque Water Mirror Lake. On a clear day, one can even see the distant Temple Island nestled amidst the shimmering lake and mountains.
Earl Wainritt skillfully guided the group on a leisurely tour of the garden, each stop eliciting heartfelt praise from the crowd for the surrounding beauty. Duke Jinsha was the only person besides Earl Wainritt to have entered the Diecui Garden before, but he had always accompanied His Majesty Jiaxiu and had never had the leisure to appreciate the scenery. Now, however, he couldn't help but admire it endlessly.
Debo, envious, said, "Duke Xiulan, you should at least reserve a room for me facing Water Mirror Lake. I'll stay here whenever I visit the capital."
Feiya snorted, "It's none of your business. I should at least get to choose a room first."
Duke Jinsha looked at his two children and smiled wryly, "You two talk as if this imperial garden belongs to you."
I said nonchalantly, "It's alright, one room is enough for me."
I don't need enjoyment; my only enjoyment is the thrill of conquest.
Although the scenery of the Verdant Garden is intoxicating to everyone, I have no interest in it whatsoever.
Perhaps I prefer to stand alone in the "Mirror Pavilion" at night, gazing at the distant lake and overlooking the Holy Temple Palace, the so-called guardian of humanity's holy path.
Suddenly, I heard Xi Hanya's delighted voice: "Look, there are goldfish in the lotus pond here."
Earl Winrit smiled and said, "These goldfish are precious tributes from the Kingdom of Shadar; they are rare treasures throughout the entire Xilan Continent."
After completing the handover procedures, everyone was a little tired.
Earl Winrit was the first to rise and take his leave, while Duke Jinsha, Debo, and I sat in the study, enjoying fragrant tea and resting.
Duke Jinsha sighed, "I never expected His Majesty to bestow the Diecui Garden upon you as well. At first, I thought it would be one of the other two imperial gardens in the Holy City."
Debo said enviously, "With such a beautiful mansion, why worry about beauties not wanting to come to your door?"
Duke Jinsha retorted angrily, "Can't you use your brain for anything else besides these things?"
"Other?" Debo asked, startled, "Other what?"
Duke Jinsha ignored him, took a sip of tea, and pondered for a moment before saying, "Duke Xiulan, there is something I want to ask you."
I said calmly, "You don't need to use such a harsh word as 'ask' when you talk to me."
Duke Jinsha smiled bitterly, "But this matter can only be entrusted to you, Duke."
Debo asked curiously, "Father, what is it? Can't I do it for you?"
Duke Jinsha snorted, "Can you do your sister's life-long affair for her?"
Debo was dumbfounded, and I was also taken aback.
Duke Jinsha sighed, “I can see that Feiya has fallen in love with you, Duke Xiulan. During the month you were missing, she was constantly distracted, her smile vanished. But as soon as you returned, she was back to her old self, even happier than before. Although she hasn't told me, I know Feiya can't live without you. So, Duke Xiulan, if you feel that Feiya won't bring you shame, I would like to ask you to take care of her for me in the days to come.”
I was somewhat bewildered. Take care of a woman?
Why should I take care of her?
I'm used to solitude; women are merely my possessions and luxuries.
I enjoy the pleasure of conquering women, the soft, melodious cries under my whip.
But I've never thought of taking care of a woman.
Duke Jinsha smiled bitterly, “I know this might put you in a difficult position, but I simply hope that if Feiya wishes to stay by your side, you can accept her and not send her away.”
I hummed softly, and Feiya's pure and beautiful face suddenly appeared in my mind.
For some reason, I suddenly felt a sense of bewilderment and whispered, "I've accepted her. You don't need to worry about her leaving. I'll keep her by my side forever."
Yes, forever by my side, she can't betray me, and she can't leave me.
Because she's my woman, my property.
Forever.
Duke Jinsha breathed a sigh of relief and smiled slightly, "I'm relieved to hear Duke Xiulan's words. Although I have three sons, I only have this one daughter, so naturally I love her more."
Debo said excitedly, "That's wonderful, Duke Xiulan, from now on we're family."
I didn't speak, pondering why Duke Jinsha had suddenly entrusted Feiya to me.
Perhaps he was considering his daughter's happiness, or perhaps he, like His Majesty Jiaxiu, was trying to win me over or had other motives.
I believe he knew about Feiya and me a long time ago, but just pretended not to.
Because if I were still a fallen prince of Biarell, he would never have agreed to give Feiya to me, even if Feiya loved me.
But since yesterday, the situation has changed.
I am no longer the destitute Prince Xiu Lan, but Duke Biarrère of Monston. I have gained the favor of His Majesty Jiaxiu, who even gifted me his own garden and promised to marry his beloved granddaughter, Princess Jingyue, to me after my restoration.
These things made Duke Jinsha realize my worth.
Duke Jinsha gazed at his son and slowly said, "Debo, there's something I must remind you. The capital is not Redstone City. While you're in Temple City, you must be careful at all times. It's best to avoid brothels and, more importantly, don't try to seduce those noble girls."
Debo chuckled and said, "I understand, Father. But what about the assassin from last night?"
Duke Jinsha shook his head and said, "His Majesty mentioned this to me this morning and said he would definitely get to the bottom of it. But we don't know who did it yet."
"Father, who do you think it could be?"
Duke Jinsha glanced at me intentionally or unintentionally and sighed, "It's quite obvious. Of the four dukes, only I support Prince Ote, which naturally incurs the displeasure of the other two princes. But to say that they would dare to try to kill me in the capital is hard to believe."
This was Duke Jinsha's true thought. He had hinted at it after the assassination attempt last night, and now the meaning in his words was even clearer.
If it weren't for Feiya's influence, he probably would never have directly pointed the finger at Aden and Mustin in front of me.
Although Duke Jinsha's expression remained calm as he spoke, I could sense the anger and murderous intent lurking within him.
The seemingly peaceful and prosperous capital was, in reality, like a volcano brimming with molten lava, its eruption not far off.
Chapter Five: Fishing by the Lake Under
the Bright Moon and Gentle Breeze.
Night enveloped my clothes.
The Mirror Pavilion lay at my feet, the distant Mirror Lake shrouded in tranquility.
I couldn't see Temple Island, but I could see the bright moon reflected in the lake.
My thoughts drifted, and I suddenly recalled the figure from the palace during the day.
A lake-blue shadow flickered before my eyes.
She was Princess Mirror Moon, hailed as the most beautiful woman in Monston, and the Temple's prized successor.
Her father was the deceased Prince Hamigan, once the most promising heir to the throne.
She was His Majesty Jiaxiu's most beloved granddaughter, and perhaps one day she would become my woman.
Why would Jiaxiu do this?
From my audience with him last night until now, only two days have passed, yet he has repeatedly shown me favor. Is it merely for the sake of so-called grandfather-granddaughter affection?
A cold laugh rose in my heart. It couldn't be that.
At least, he has now successfully incited the jealousy of many people towards me—that hypothetical statement still echoed in my ears, and I absolutely do not believe that he was speaking from unintentionally.
But why did he betroth Princess Jingyue to me?
Was it merely to win me over?
Or is there some other ulterior motive that I have not yet detected?
Countless speculations surged through my mind, and I sensed His Majesty Jiaxiu's shrewdness and wisdom.
"Master," Roy's voice rang out outside the Mirror Pavilion, "General Qu Linan, Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar, requests an audience."
General Qu Linan?
This was the first time I'd heard his name, and what piqued my interest was his position as Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar.
The Knights Templar numbered only 5,000, responsible for guarding the palace and protecting the royal family.
All the soldiers were trained by the Templars, and the high-ranking officers were all experts from the Templar system.
They were His Majesty Jiaxiu's most trusted and relied-upon force, and one of the most elite legions on the Xilan Continent.
A smile involuntarily crept onto my lips—the Templars, General Qu Linan, I hadn't expected them to come after me first.
But why would Qu Linan want to see me so late?
Perhaps I should meet him to investigate the Templars' true nature.
"Have him come here to see me."
"Yes, Master."
A moment later, I suddenly felt a sharp, oppressive aura pressing down on me from behind.
Like a drawn sword, its sharpness fully revealed.
Qu Linan had arrived.
I sensed his presence when he was about twenty paces from the Lanjing Pavilion.
It was entirely due to his astonishing aura.
If he were my enemy, he would be a formidable foe.
I didn't turn around, my hands casually behind my back, letting my gaze follow the wind across the sky.
"Duke Xiu Lan, greetings."
Qu Linan's voice was cold and stiff, and I vaguely sensed that his intentions were not good.
He even exuded a hostility and a deliberately concealed killing intent.
I still didn't turn around, coldly saying, "General Qu Linan, what do you want with me?"
"I want you to give up Princess Jingyue."
My heart skipped a beat, and I finally understood His Majesty Jiaxiu's intentions.
On the surface, he generously betrothed Princess Jingyue to me, but in reality, he had placed me in the open.
The many admirers of Princess Jingyue would inevitably see me as a target, wanting to get rid of me as soon as possible.
With a casual move, he had already laid countless hidden reefs and enemies around me.
But why did he do this?
Was it to stop me from restoring my kingdom, or did he sense the threat I posed?
In any case, his scheme had already achieved immediate results.
I sneered, "Why?"
"Because you are unworthy," Qu Linan replied coldly, "You are nothing but a stray dog of Biarell, utterly unworthy of Princess Jingyue." A
chilling killing intent surged within me, but my tone remained calm: "This isn't something you can decide. Princess Jingyue's marriage to me is His Majesty's decree."
Qu Linan groaned, "From the age of six, we have cultivated together in the Holy Temple Palace. For thirteen years, we have been inseparable. I absolutely cannot lose her!"
I scoffed, "Isn't it a provocation to speak of Princess Jingyue like this in front of me?"
"I don't understand why His Majesty did this, but you must give up, you must annul the engagement!"
I sneered, "Aren't you being a bit too hasty? Don't forget that even if Princess Jingyue were to marry me, it would have to wait until I had conquered Biarell."
"That's precisely why I demand you annul the engagement immediately. If you conquer Biarell, the princess will have no choice but to marry you; if you don't conquer Biarell, the princess cannot marry anyone else!"
"What if I don't annul the engagement?"
A dense killing intent suddenly emanated from Qu Linan as he said, each word distinct, "I will duel you and kill you."
A cold glint flashed in my eyes as I slowly turned around, meeting Qu Linan's gaze for the first time.
He appeared to be under thirty, with a handsome, aloof, and cold face, yet his eyes burned like a flame.
This was the so-called expert of the Temple?
Perhaps he had reached the level of a Holy Knight, but his brilliance was too exposed; in terms of cultivation, he couldn't compare to the nameless expert who stood behind His Majesty Jiaxiu that night.
I was confident I could defeat him, even kill him, if my dark energy returned to its peak.
Even if Jiaxiu were to witness the clash between me and the Temple, I would still make my move.
He had ignited my killing intent.
But I wasn't foolish enough to act now; I wouldn't leave anyone with a handle against me.
"You want to duel me?" I said calmly, "Why should I accept?"
Qu Linan was taken aback, then laughed smugly, "The rumors are indeed true. Prince Xiu Lan of Bialer is truly a coward who dares not accept a challenge."
A burning killing intent ignited in my heart. No matter who he was, no matter what his background was, based on just that one sentence, even the Temple Master couldn't save him.
—He didn't insult Xiu Lan, he insulted me!
The owner of the stone house once warned me not to clash with the Temple, but I haven't forgotten my answer to him.
Unless the Temple doesn't provoke me, I will still crush it!
A smile suddenly appeared on my face, a very innocent smile: "It's not that I'm afraid to accept the challenge, it's that I'm worried His Majesty won't allow our private duel. If you were to unfortunately die at my hands, the position of Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar would be vacant, which would be a real problem."
Qu Linan chuckled, "I see. Tomorrow I'll petition His Majesty for permission to duel. I hope you won't be a coward again."
I smiled faintly, "It's late. Go back and count your remaining days."
A fierce glint flashed in Qu Linan's eyes, he snorted and strode out of the Mirror Pavilion, disappearing into the night.
I watched him disappear, a cold smile playing on my lips, like a call from hell.
Count your days, Qu Linan.
Your death begins to count down from this moment, and no one can stop it.
I'm not worried that His Majesty Jiaxiu will refuse our duel—isn't that exactly what he wants to see?
To use the Temple to get rid of me, to get rid of someone who outwardly cares for Jiaxiu.
Unfortunately, I'm not the Xiu Lan he imagines. I won't disappoint him.
“Master?” Xi Hanya’s gentle and melodious voice rang out softly outside the pavilion. In the moonlight, I saw a hint of worry on her face.
“You heard everything?”
Xi Hanya nodded and walked to my side, saying, “He is the vice-commander of the Knights Templar and comes from the Temple. Master, you—”
I sneered coldly, “Are you afraid he will kill me?”
Xi Hanya shook her head and sighed, “I don’t know why, but since Master lost his memory, I have developed an incredibly strong confidence in him. I’m not worried that Master will lose to him, but I’m afraid that it will offend His Majesty Jiaxiu and the Temple.”
I burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the night sky.
I pulled Xi Hanya into my arms and said slowly, "I'm not afraid to offend anyone, and no one can insult me, or I'll wash it all away with their blood!"
The wind tousled my black hair, fluttering in the quiet night.
My body stood tall and imposing, my eyes radiating powerful confidence, like a god.
Xi Hanya nestled in my embrace, whispering, "Master, Xi Hanya will always be your woman."
My heart warmed, and I suddenly swept her up in my arms, lowering my head to kiss her cherry lips.
Xi Hanya blushed, her breath coming in soft gasps, "Master, you—"
"I want you," I whispered, "right here."
The next afternoon, a luxurious royal carriage screeched to a halt in front of the gates of Diecui Garden, waiting for me to go to Water Mirror Lake.
Beside a small pebble beach in Mirror Lake, His Majesty Jiaxiu was leisurely fishing alone, two rows of golden-armored guards standing a hundred meters behind him.
I took my fishing gear and walked along the gravel path to sit beside His Majesty Jiaxiu. He stared intently at the lake, saying calmly, "This is the best spot on the lakeshore, and the view of the sunset over the calm lake is superb."
I looked out; the lake was vast and calm, its surface shimmering with golden light.
My heart swelled with a sense of exhilaration.
His Majesty Jiaxiu murmured, "I love fishing here, contemplating things while gazing at the lake and mountains. Don't you think that facing Mirror Lake broadens one's mind considerably, Xiulan?"
I baited my hook and cast it into the lake, creating ripples.
"If I could, I would prefer to face the sea," I replied softly.
His Majesty Jiaxiu smiled slightly and said, “Ten years ago, I toured the southern frontier and stayed for three days in a seaside garden. Every morning, the first thing I did was stand at the window and wait for the sunrise. Only at that moment did I feel how insignificant and yet how great I was. Can you understand this wonderful feeling?”
“I’ve never seen the sea,”
His Majesty Jiaxiu chuckled. “Right, you grew up in Biarell, where you can’t see the sea.”
Suddenly, His Majesty Jiaxiu’s fishing rod trembled slightly. He smiled and said, “A fish has taken the bait.”
With a flick of his wrist, a large fish weighing nearly ten pounds was easily pulled from the lake, slumped onto the rocky beach, and struggled hopelessly.
A servant rushed over from afar, unhooked the fish, and put the large fish into the basket, saying, "Congratulations, Your Majesty, another big fish!"
Emperor Jiaxiu showed no excitement or pride, calmly replying, "For me, the most anticipated moment is when the fish takes the bait. Once it's pulled from the water, all suspense is gone, and there's no fun left."
My heart skipped a beat.
Yes, the most anticipated moment is always when the big fish bites the bait; only then can one experience the thrill and the exhilaration of conquest.
When the suspense disappears, the victory may only leave a strange emptiness.
Therefore, to seek new thrills, one must continue to seek suspense and challenges; only in this way does life have meaning.
Jiaxiu, even, understood this feeling.
Perhaps, he was the strongest enemy I had encountered since arriving in Monston.
Suddenly sensing something, I asked in a low voice, "Has Your Majesty already found out who wanted to assassinate Duke Jinsha?"
A look of approval flashed in Emperor Jiaxiu's eyes as he smiled and said, "Although I haven't found out who wanted to kill Duke Jinsha, I do know who secretly slipped out of the palace to deliver a message the night before last."
"Someone really sneaked out of the palace to deliver a message?"
"Hmph, he was an official I always trusted, but he mysteriously disappeared for a while the night before last, and no one knows where he went. Besides him, four other people left the palace during that time, but they've all been ruled out, leaving only him."
"Do you know who he delivered the message to, Your Majesty?"
Emperor Jiaxiu said coldly, "He committed suicide. When my guards found him, he was dead in his room, using the same poison as the assassin that night."
I couldn't help but feel disappointed; it seemed the lead had gone cold.
His Majesty Jiaxiu gazed at the lake, his tone calm as he said, "Even so, I have a way to find out who's behind this. Otherwise, people will laugh at my old age."
At this moment, a servant approached His Majesty Jiaxiu and whispered something, but it didn't escape my keen hearing.
It was Qu Linan, the Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar, requesting an audience.
A cold smile crept across my face; I naturally understood why he wanted to see His Majesty Jiaxiu.
It seemed he was quite impatient.
His Majesty Jiaxiu frowned slightly, seemingly displeased that his rare moment of leisure had been interrupted, and said in a low voice, "What does he want?"
The servant shook his head and said, "Your Majesty, he looks very anxious; it seems he has something important to report."
His Majesty Jiaxiu snorted and said, "Let him come."
I observed coldly without saying a word, vaguely sensing from His Majesty Jiaxiu's expression and reaction that he was quite indifferent to his Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar.
The sound of Qu Linan's footsteps echoed behind me. Dressed in silver knight armor, he looked dashing and imposing.
"Your Majesty!" Qu Linan bowed to Emperor Jiaxiu from five paces away. When his gaze swept over me, it flashed with barely concealed jealousy.
"Speak, what do you want with me?" Emperor Jiaxiu asked without turning his head.
"Yes," Qu Linan bowed slightly, took a breath, and said, "I request a duel with Duke Xiu Lan, and ask Your Majesty to be the witness."
His Majesty Jiaxiu's face remained calm as he asked indifferently, "Why do you want to duel with Duke Biarell?"
Qu Linan shouted, "Because he is unworthy of Princess Jingyue!"
A cold smile appeared on His Majesty Jiaxiu's lips as he said, "Princess Jingyue is someone I personally promised to marry after Duke Xiu Lan's restoration. Are you questioning my decision?"
"I dare not. I merely request Your Majesty's permission to duel with Duke Xiu Lan!"
"And if I do not allow it?"
Qu Linan's expression changed, and after a moment's hesitation, he finally said coldly, "Is Your Majesty afraid that I will kill your beloved grandson in the duel?" My
heart skipped a beat. I hadn't expected Qu Linan to dare say such radical things in front of His Majesty Jiaxiu.
He was merely a vice-commander of the Knights Templar; even with his special status, he could not be compared to a monarch.
Sure enough, a flash of anger crossed His Majesty Jiaxiu's eyes, but he quickly regained his composure and said, "Who gave you the audacity to speak to me like that?"
Qu Linan seemed to realize that he had acted too impulsively just now, and bowed his head respectfully, saying, "Your Majesty, please forgive me!"
His Majesty Jiaxiu snorted, and his gaze fell on my face as he asked with a gentle tone, "Xiu Lan, General Qu Linan wants to duel with you. Do you have any objections?"
I vaguely sensed in my heart that although Qu Linan had bowed his head and admitted his mistake, he was not truly convinced.
He didn't seem particularly afraid of Emperor Jiaxiu. Was it because the Holy Temple was backing him?
But these weren't things to consider now. I had to use this opportunity to eliminate Qu Linan.
A sudden sense of absurdity washed over me—I was actually forced to duel with another man for a woman I'd never truly met.
And I was actually looking forward to this duel.
Not for Princess Jingyue, but because of the uncontrollable killing intent within me.
I calmly replied, "I can accept his challenge at any time, Your Majesty."
Emperor Jiaxiu stared at me, unable to discern anything from my calm expression, and said, "Xiu Lan, I must remind you, if you lose, I will annul the engagement." I sneered inwardly
. Wasn't this exactly what Jiaxiu wanted? The engagement and even Princess Jingyue were merely pawns in his game.
"I understand, but I will not lose," I calmly replied.
Emperor Jiaxiu nodded slightly, and I, too, couldn't discern what he was thinking behind his expression.
He slowly said, "General Qu Linan, if Duke Xiu Lan loses, the engagement will naturally be cancelled. But what if you lose?"
Qu Linan sneered at me disdainfully, "If I lose, I will willingly relinquish my position as Vice Commander of the Knights Templar!"
"Very well, after the morning assembly tomorrow, I will allow you to duel in the main hall, with me as the witness!"
Qu Linan could not contain his joy and knelt on one knee, loudly proclaiming, "Thank you, Your Majesty!"
Emperor Jiaxiu said calmly, "You may leave."
"Yes!" Qu Linan gave me a cold glare before leaving and strode away.
"Another fish has taken the bait," Emperor Jiaxiu suddenly murmured, the fishing float on the lake trembling slightly.
"Xiu Lan, I hope you can win tomorrow," Emperor Jiaxiu skillfully pulled a large fish from the water. I stared indifferently at the struggling fish, wondering if in Emperor Jiaxiu's heart it was me or Qu Linan?
Or perhaps both.
Chapter Six: The Court Duel.
The news that Duke Xiu Lan and General Qu Linan would duel after the morning court assembly tomorrow spread like wildfire throughout the city.
Tonight, the people of Temple City wouldn't have to worry about how to pass the time; they could freely discuss the duel and relish Princess Jingyue's beauty.
In the Xilan Continent, it was common for men to duel for a woman they desired.
However, this time was different. Not only were the duelist Duke Xiu Lan and General Qu Linan, the vice-commander of the Knights Templar, but the woman was Princess Jingyue.
Therefore, it was no surprise that everyone's conversation revolved around this matter.
Only in my living room was there a profound silence. Xi Hanya, An Ludi, Feiya, Alanzo, Yuriru, Feibing, and Roy sat silently in their chairs, their eyes fixed on me as if I were a dying man.
To everyone else, this was a duel with no suspense whatsoever.
I cannot defeat the Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar, even those close to me think so.
In their eyes, after everything that has happened, I am still the kind and cowardly Prince Bialel.
Even if I perform some astonishing feats, I cannot change the impression they have formed over the years.
I made no explanation; tomorrow I will answer with Qu Linan's blood.
Since the challenge is before me, I have absolutely no reason to back down or hide; that is not in my nature.
Perhaps His Majesty Jiaxiu wants to use Qu Linan to get rid of me, or perhaps he wants to use me to get rid of Qu Linan; either way, it wouldn't be wrong for him.
And as for me, how could I possibly disappoint His Majesty Jiaxiu and General Qu Linan?
"Duke Xiu Lan!"
Debo rushed into the living room, saw me leisurely sipping fragrant tea, and said with a wry smile, "I heard you're dueling General Qu Linan tomorrow?"
"Yes."
Debo stared at me for a long time before sighing, "Are you crazy? Do you know where I heard this news? The casinos! Tonight, all the big casinos in Temple City are offering bets on your duel with Qu Linan, but they're not betting on who wins or loses, they're betting on how many moves you can last?"
I smiled coldly and asked, "Isn't anyone betting on me to win?"
Debo sighed and said, "I'd love to bet on you to win, but I can't think of a single possibility."
"Why?"
"The opponent is General Qu Linan, the vice-commander of the Knights Templar, and the direct disciple of the Great Sage Schlegel, one of the three elders of the Temple. Although I know you have undergone amazing changes after losing your memory, you still can't possibly be a match for General Qu Linan. You know, anyone who can escape ten moves from his sword is already someone to boast about."
I snorted, stood up, and walked out of the living room, saying, "I've heard too much nonsense like this."
Debo, unwilling to give up, followed behind me, saying, "This only proves that nobody has faith in you, and you shouldn't have accepted Qu Linan's challenge at all."
I suddenly turned around, looked at Debo indifferently, and said in a deep voice, "You also want to teach me what I should and shouldn't do?"
Debo was intimidated by my aggressive gaze and involuntarily took a step back, muttering, "I can't be bothered with you. I'm afraid that Feiya will become a widow before she's even married into the family."
I stared at Debo and slowly said, "If I were you, I would immediately go back to the casino, bet all my assets on me, and then wait to collect the money tomorrow."
Debo stared at me dumbfounded. I ignored him and walked into the back garden.
The bright moonlight shone on me, and the Lanjing Pavilion stood alone in the darkness,
like my shadow .
"There's something Dad asked me to tell you," Debo said, following closely behind me. "The guy who sneaked out of the palace to deliver the message has been found, but he's already committed suicide."
I said calmly, "I already know."
Debo said mysteriously, "But you definitely don't know whose man he is?"
I stopped and turned around to ask, "You know?"
Debo leaned closer to me and lowered his voice, "Don't forget who my dad is. How could such a small matter escape his notice?"
Debo took a breath and said softly, "The messenger's name is Shuchar, he's His Majesty's attendant, and one of his cousins works as a staff member in Prince Aden's residence."
"It's him?"
"Most likely," Debo said, "This morning His Majesty summoned Prince Aden alone after the morning meeting. What else could it be about?"
I felt something was off. If it were so easy to find something on Prince Aden, he wouldn't have been able to fight with Ott and Mustin for so many years.
However, I'll consider all of this after dealing with Qu Linan tomorrow.
The next morning, I refused Xi Hanya and the others' request to wait at the palace gates, only allowing Yuriru to take ten silver-armored guards as his attendants.
During the farewell, no one dared to say anything more, lest it affect my mood.
It seems they still don't trust me.
Perhaps in their hearts they weren't praying for my victory, but rather begging Qu Linan not to kill me.
I ignored them and leaped onto my mount.
Xi Hanya finally straightened my robes and whispered, "Master, we'll wait here for your triumphant return. Please be careful."
Feiya's eyes were full of tears—she had secretly cried half the night, thinking I didn't know; her swollen eyes had already betrayed her.
She forced a smile at me, "You will definitely win, Xiu Lan. Xi Hanya, An Ludi, and I will all pray for you." Even the usually carefree An Ludi was speechless, hugging Xue Dian and hiding behind Xi Hanya, her eyes never leaving me.
Alanzo, Fei Bing, and Roy stood on the steps, whispering instructions to Yuriru.
I coldly surveyed the crowd and said, "Alright, go back now. Don't treat it like sending off a dead man."
I was utterly fed up with their grief and tears.
"Master!"
An Ludi finally couldn't hold back any longer and rushed to my horse, clinging tightly to my leg. "You must come back alive!"
I was getting impatient with their antics, and anger welled up inside me. I was about to kick An Ludi away when I looked down and saw her sorrowful and worried expression. For some reason, I sighed and gently patted her back. "Don't worry, I'll give you a good beating tonight."
An Ludi released my leg and said firmly, "Master, we'll wait for you to come back."
I gave a low shout, and my mount galloped off, kicking up a cloud of dust as we sped towards the palace.
I felt their gazes fixed on me until I disappeared from sight.
I encountered Duke Jinsha as soon as I reached the palace gates.
It seemed he had been waiting for me there for some time; fine dewdrops clung to his clothes.
He saw me and gave a wry smile. "Duke Xiulan, why did you accept General Qu Linan's challenge without saying a word?"
"He approached me first. You should ask him."
Duke Jinsha sighed. "His infatuation with Princess Jingyue is common knowledge, but I never expected him to do something so crazy."
I walked through the majestic palace gates, and the magnificent hall stood before me in the morning light.
"I heard the person behind it all has been found out?" I changed the subject and asked casually.
Duke Jinsha's expression turned cold, and he said in a low voice, "He's here."
Prince Aden walked slowly from not far away, his gaze meeting Duke Jinsha's briefly before his, as if nothing had happened.
"Duke Xiulan."
He stopped in front of me, his hawk-like gaze quickly sweeping across my face.
“Your Highness Aden.”
“You’re going to duel with General Qu Linan after the morning assembly?”
“Yes.”
He smiled slightly, his smile still somewhat cold: “I bet you’ll win. Don’t disappoint me.”
I replied coldly: “Whether Your Highness is disappointed or not, I will still win.”
Prince Aden’s expression remained unchanged. He softly said “Good,” and walked into the hall.
Duke Jinsha coldly stared at his back and snorted: “In his heart, he would rather all the Knights Templar be dead.”
I understood what Duke Jinsha meant. The Knights Templar were undoubtedly a strong supporter of Prince Aden. If I could defeat Qu Linan, it would greatly weaken the prestige of the Knights Templar and even the Temple in people’s hearts, which would naturally help Prince Aden.
Suddenly, I noticed two piercing eyes shooting at me from the corner. Qu Linan, clad in silver armor, was giving me a slight, cold laugh.
I pretended not to notice and strode into the magnificent hall.
Perhaps everyone was eager to see the duel, because the morning assembly ended quickly.
His Majesty Jiaxiu sat upright on his dragon throne, his gaze sweeping over the faces of everyone in the hall. He slowly said, "As you may have heard, Duke Xiulan and General Qu Linan are to have a duel after this morning's assembly. If Duke Xiulan loses, he must annul his engagement to Princess Jingyue; if General Qu Linan loses, his position as Vice-Commander of the Knights Templar will be given to Duke Xiulan. I have already granted their request and will serve as the witness for this duel. Now, please, gentlemen, enter the arena."
Qu Linan strode into the arena, knelt on one knee towards His Majesty Jiaxiu, and said loudly, "Your Majesty, I have another request!"
"Speak!"
Qu Linan glanced at me coldly, bowed his head, and said, "Life and death are uncertain in a duel. I request Your Majesty's permission to write a death warrant. If I unfortunately die by Duke Xiulan's sword, no one shall seek revenge against Duke Xiulan!"
Everyone's expression changed, knowing that Qu Linan had already developed murderous intent towards me.
His words, though seemingly grand and directed only at himself, revealed to everyone that once he signed the life-or-death waiver, I would have no choice but to sign mine as well.
His Majesty Jiaxiu pondered for a moment, then asked me, "Duke Xiulan, what is your opinion?"
I calmly replied, "That's the way it should be."
His Majesty Jiaxiu barked, "Good! Bring paper and pen to the two gentlemen!"
The life-or-death waiver was quickly written and presented to His Majesty Jiaxiu by palace attendants.
At this moment, the golden-armored guards had already presented my and Qu Linan's longswords; a great battle was imminent.
His Majesty Jiaxiu looked at me and Qu Linan and asked, "Are you both ready?"
My right hand gripped the hilt of my sword, feeling no tension whatsoever, but rather a sense of excitement. I nodded and said, "Yes, Your Majesty."
Qu Linan also held his sword, coldly staring at me, and said, "Ready, Your Majesty!"
His Majesty Jiaxiu slowly said, "The rules of the duel should be known to both of you, so I will not repeat them. If one side voluntarily concedes or loses the ability to fight again, the duel will end. Do you two have any questions?"
"No, Your Majesty!"
"Very well, the duel begins!"
The hall fell silent; you could clearly hear a pin drop. All eyes were on us.
Qu Linan slowly drew his sword, a cold light flashing from its sheath, a chilling sword aura pressing down on me.
"The sword is named Lightning Chaser, sharp enough to cut through gold. Duke Xiulan, you'd better be careful."
I smiled slightly, of course not foolish enough to think he was kindly reminding me—Qu Linan was only saying this to put immense pressure on me.
Reaching the level of a paladin like him requires more than just strength; it's about psychology and tactics.
Subduing the enemy without fighting is the highest achievement.
I easily sheathed my longsword and replied, "Such a fine sword is wasted in your hands."
My provocation worked; a flash of anger crossed Qu Linan's face as he sneered, "Will you still think that way when it pierces your throat?"
My body completely relaxed, my fighting spirit and killing intent steadily building, my expression becoming even calmer.
"Enough talk, draw your sword."
Qu Linan chuckled coldly, a ferocious glint in his eyes. He roared, raising his sword high above his head, and strode towards me.
His heavy footsteps echoed through the hall, his powerful aura forcing the onlookers to retreat several steps.
Instead of being alarmed, I was delighted, knowing that Qu Linan had committed the cardinal sin of underestimating his opponent.
He had underestimated me, attempting to defeat me cleanly and decisively with an overwhelming onslaught to gain the admiration of others.
In his eyes, defeating me was not an honor; only a swift end would allow him to show off.
After all, Xiu Lan, though the prince of Biareel, was not a particularly skilled fighter.
In doing so, he had abandoned his own strengths.
I knew that Qu Linan's swordsmanship was characterized by its lightness and speed, yet he had played to his weaknesses, giving me an opportunity.
I gradually became immersed in the fighting spirit that spread throughout my body, my eyes fixed on Qu Linan's lightning-fast sword, a confident smile playing on my lips.
Sometimes, a single look, a single expression, is enough to throw an opponent into disarray.
Thump!
Thump!
Qu Linan approached me step by step, my clothes fluttering without wind.
The dark energy within me surged excitedly, thirstily awaiting its explosion.
"Ah—"
Qu Linan roared, a sharp killing intent flashing in his eyes. His longsword slashed down at me like a mountain collapsing and the earth splitting. Someone in the hall couldn't help but let out a low gasp.
"Clang!"
My body slid to the right with fluid grace, dodging the attack. My longsword flipped and deftly deflected his Lightning Chaser.
The two swords clashed in mid-air.
Because it was a collision of blades, the Lightning Chaser's sharpness was rendered useless, and my longsword
remained undamaged. Sword energy overflowed, and a gust of wind arose.
I used the momentum to flash to Qu Linan's left, and my longsword unleashed three consecutive attacks like a surging river.
"Clang clang clang!"
Qu Linan was forced back five steps by my relentless attacks, barely managing to parry my longsword.
A look of surprise appeared in his eyes; clearly, my strength had exceeded his expectations.
I felt a surge of exhilaration as the energy within me surged forth like a tidal wave, overwhelming Qu Linan with almost no power to retaliate.
"Clang!"
Qu Linan, worthy of being a paladin, quickly adjusted after being caught off guard by my three consecutive sword strikes. Using a feint, he escaped my sword's grasp and stood firm six paces away.
In the previous exchange, I had successfully dampened his spirits; his aura was no longer what it was at the start of the battle.
I also took the opportunity to regulate my breathing. Although my rapid attacks had given me a slight advantage, I had also expended some energy. The powerful internal energy that had rebounded from Qu Linan's sword also needed to be digested slowly.
The two of us returned to a stalemate.
Everyone in the hall was astonished, not expecting that I had not only avoided bloodshed but had also gained a slight advantage.
"I underestimated you," Qu Linan stared at me and said slowly, "I will no longer hold back now, so be careful!"
I sneered, "Have you held back?"
Qu Linan snorted, his figure flashing like lightning as he closed in. His lightning-fast sword danced with clusters of white light, dazzling the eye and making it impossible to see the sword's movements clearly.
This was his ultimate technique, forced by my immense pressure to rely on speed and agility to contend with me.
I remained unmoved.
My body stood firm like a mountain, my gaze fixed on the lightning bolt.
No matter how it shifted, it could not escape my eyes.
In my eyes, although his sword was faster than lightning, it remained crystal clear; every trajectory was clearly displayed in my mind.
"Clang, clang, clang—"
A series of crisp, metallic sounds rang out, as melodious as jade beads falling onto a plate.
My longsword steadily guarded my surroundings, accurately deflecting each of his strikes.
Qu Linan's silver-white figure moved around me; at first, his form was still discernible, but later he almost transformed into a beam of white light, enveloping me within it.
Everyone in the hall held their breath, watching the duel intently.
Although I didn't know their thoughts, I knew they must be astonished by my performance.
Qu Linan's eyes grew increasingly cold and sharp; he seemed to have completely merged with his sword, launching an overwhelming offensive against me.
But after dozens of strikes, I showed no weakness, remaining as steady as a mountain.
His expression finally changed, and his anxiety unconsciously surfaced.
On the surface, I was on the defensive, but Qu Linan knew that he was in greater danger.
I was like a volcano poised to erupt, outwardly calm but containing immense counterattack power.
Once Qu Linan showed a weakness in his attacks or his momentum wore off, my counterattack would be overwhelming.
Therefore, he couldn't stop; he could only continue attacking relentlessly until one of us couldn't hold on any longer.
My smile grew wider, as if victory was already in sight.
