Gates' three dishes hit the nail on the head for the Chinese.

    page views:1  Publication date:2022-04-20
The three dishes are: smoked pearl chicken salad, beef with Washington State yellow onions or Alaskan halibut with shrimp (choose one), and dessert: butter almond cake.
Recently, during President Hu Jintao's visit to the United States, the world's richest man, Bill Gates, was treated to a three-course dinner. While such a common practice might not seem unusual to Americans, it surprised many Chinese officials and tycoons. They might have thought to themselves, "Gates, you are the world's richest man, and to serve the Chinese president only three courses seems rather stingy! At least a grand feast like the Manchu Han Imperial Feast would be more appropriate to reflect your status as the world's richest man and the wealth of the Americans." Of course, for Chinese officials and tycoons who frequently attend such banquets, such a lavish feast is commonplace.
Let's suppose that a wealthy Chinese man were hosting a foreign head of state. Would he feel at ease serving a simple three-course meal? More likely, to save face for the local government, for his own company, to avoid appearing shabby, to demonstrate his wealth and status, to earn the respect of the entire nation, and to impress all the wealthy, he would undoubtedly prepare an unprecedentedly lavish banquet to gain the other party's approval.
Don't you see, in ordinary times, China's wealthy don't buy the best things, they only buy the most expensive. They don't care about the quality; as long as they own it, it demonstrates their wealth. Take, for example, an international food festival held in Shenyang in 2005. A hotel spent nearly 200,000 yuan preparing a Manchu Han Imperial Feast, then invited experts and leaders to taste it, creating a grand spectacle. Everyone took a bite and praised it, someone else took a sip of fine wine, and then they whispered among themselves, solemnly announcing that the hotel's Manchu Han Imperial Feast had won the international food festival. Then, you applauded, someone else laughed, everyone immersed in the merriment, forgetting themselves. After everyone left, the whole table became a pile of garbage.
Holding a wedding banquet is a very common thing for Chinese people. Even ordinary people can spend a lot of money on a wedding. A table at a typical wedding banquet costs at least a thousand yuan, and if the family is slightly better off, it is not uncommon to hear of a wedding banquet costing nearly 100,000 yuan. Of course, 100,000 yuan may be decades of savings for an ordinary person. However, such happy events are not considered extravagant by Chinese people, but rather a once-in-a-lifetime event that is worthwhile. We can also treat this situation differently from American customs!
But Gates' three dishes this time undoubtedly hit the nail on the head regarding the weaknesses of Chinese officials and the wealthy. Don't you often see wealthy Chinese people comparing their riches, and officials frequently gathering to boast about how much they've spent on a single, most expensive meal? If we compare Gates' three dishes to the Manchu Han Imperial Feast favored by wealthy Chinese people and officials, doesn't it seem rather petty?
It is clear from this that Mr. Gates is stingy, while China's wealthy are generous.
It is clear that Bill Gates' stinginess with just three dishes cannot be compared to the lavishness of a Manchu Han Imperial Feast by wealthy Chinese.
Perhaps the United States is completely unaware of the "Eight Honors and Eight Shames" education campaign, but billionaires like Gates embody this international version of etiquette to their very core. Often, we elevate these concepts to a political level, much like China's afforestation efforts. Many trees are planted every year, but with the climate constantly deteriorating, it remains superficial. We forget that for these trees to survive, subsequent attention and care are crucial factors. Mere slogans only lead to greater apathy!
