A set of mirrors exchanged for glory

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
Don't even mention how miserable Xiaoxia 's
life is now. Besides her daytime job, she has to go to a far-away night market after work. Autumn winds have blown for a while,
and winter is just around the corner; fewer and fewer people are visiting the night market.
Today's business was exactly as expected—not a single mirror sold. Xiaoxia looked at the cotton slippers being sold at the stall next to her and was practically green with envy. That stall was doing incredibly well, with no haggling whatsoever—winter is coming, and everyone needs to stay warm!
Xiaoxia has a good eye; the mirrors she bought were all for girls, all shapes and styles, the craftsmanship practically works of art, and the prices weren't high. These are everyday items, so there's no peak or off-season; they'll sell eventually.
It's eleven o'clock again. After packing up, Xiaoxia hopped on her old high school bicycle and slowly made her way home. How far is Xiaoxia's home? Once she left the city streets, there were no streetlights; another half hour on a dark, messy dirt road and she'd be there.
On the way back, Xiaoxia was still calculating. He'd sold a mirror today and earned five yuan. "Hey," he thought, "what kind of nonsense is this? I spent an hour and a half round trip just for five yuan?!" Just outside the streetlights, there was a small shop. Xiaoxia went in and bought a bottle of 52-proof Erguotou (a type of Chinese liquor), two liang (100ml), exactly five yuan. He couldn't even spare the change for peanuts. Xiaoxia thought, "I'll drink it all the way back. It's foolish not to spend money earned like this!"
And let me tell you, the liquor was really strong. On that dirt road he usually traveled, Xiaoxia had been swaying for ages, and still couldn't see the end. The further he went, the darker it got; there wasn't a single light in the distance, not even a single star in the sky.
Xiaoxia rode forward, dizzy and disoriented. Luckily, he was used to driving on dirt roads, so he wasn't too nervous. If a stranger encountered such a dark stretch of road, in complete darkness, they'd either be terrified or break out in a cold sweat.
Emboldened by alcohol, Xiao Xia rode faster and faster. Suddenly, his front wheel sank into a ditch, the bike flipped over, and Xiao Xia, dazed and confused, fell to the ground. Before he even felt the pain, he was unconscious.
When he woke up, it was already daylight. If the sunlight hadn't been so strong, Xiao Xia didn't know how long he would have slept.
He got up, brushed the dirt off himself, and found the bicycle still there, the bag containing the mirror still tied to the back seat. Xiao Xia cursed inwardly: "Damn it, my mom drank fake alcohol! Two ounces and I'm out
! If it were half a pound, I'd be dead! Luckily, I only earned five yuan; any more and I'd be dead!" Xiao Xia pushed the bike out of the ditch, hopped on, and rushed towards the city. He didn't know what time it was; he was probably late for work. He didn't care about going home; he just had to get to work.
Following the route he'd taken the night before, Xiao Xia sped off towards the city.
The further he walked, the more uneasy he felt. This was a completely unfamiliar road. There were no streetlights, only a few scattered thatched huts, and not a soul in sight. What the hell was going on? Where were the city's skyscrapers? He couldn't see them at all. Xiao Xia's mind was filled with questions as big as two stories. Just then, Xiao Xia saw an oxcart approaching in the distance. The driver startled him—a man in his fifties, with long hair tied back and wearing a gray overcoat.
Xiao Xia thought, "Wow, that's so stylish! Even extras on TV don't have this level of makeup. There are cool people everywhere, haha."
As Xiao Xia got closer to the driver, the driver kept staring at him, which puzzled him. Xiao Xia quickly greeted the driver, "Grandpa, where are you going?"
He felt the driver's gaze was too strange. Perhaps he was some distant relative he didn't recognize? It was best to say hello.
The driver stopped the oxcart, got off, and bowed, saying, "I'm heading to Nanyuan. May I ask what business you
have with me, sir?" Xiao Xia was even more bewildered, his mind a complete mess: "Sir? What business? Are you playing a trick on me? He's so old, and it's like a movie scene—he's down, I'm not up! Have I time-traveled?
No, no, who time-travels after drinking? Even if I did,
it's because I was drunk, and I wouldn't be in this state once I sobered up! I'd better ask clearly.
" "Sir, are you filming a movie? You've mistaken me for someone else."
"Sir, what do you mean?"
Xiao Xia was anxious; was the old man pretending not to understand?
"Sir, what day is it today? Are you confused or are you playing a trick on me?"
"Sir, how can a scholar not know the year? Today is the sixth year of Yongle, the Beginning of Winter."
Xiao Xia's mind was now in turmoil. Had he really time-traveled? "Oh my god, Yongle? Eternal happiness or the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty?! How did I end up in
the Ming Dynasty? Is it tomorrow or the Ming Dynasty?! I wondered why the sky was so blue—damn, it's pollution-free! Pure green! Green! Blue!"
Little Shrimp's thoughts raced. The driver, glancing back every few steps, caught up with the carriage and drove off. "Oh well, there's no use thinking about it," he thought. "Let's just keep going. Even if I've really time-traveled, there's nothing I can do. Time-travel dramas have already taught us how to survive." With that thought, Little Shrimp hopped on his creaking bicycle and continued onward.
Knowing he had time-traveled, he wasn't surprised to see the occasional passerby. But the people of the Ming Dynasty looked at him like he was a giant panda. He arrived at the small shop where he had bought wine the night before; now it was a wine shop. It was noisy inside; apparently, some customers were complaining that the wine was diluted. Little Shrimp thought to himself, "Selling fake wine is hereditary. Our ancestors did it, and the descendants followed suit."
Xiao Xia, knowing he had transmigrated, wasn't particularly afraid or surprised. The Ming Dynasty was full of people too, what was there to be afraid of? Having watched so many TV dramas, there weren't many ancient things he hadn't seen before, so there was no need to be alarmed.
Xiao Xia, someone who had never enjoyed life and was constantly worried about making a living, could only think about filling his stomach. But those colorful banknotes probably wouldn't be valid anymore, so he decided to earn some money.
Xiao Xia rushed to the market, familiarly set up his stall, and displayed the mirrors he had acquired the previous night. He had shouted a few times at the night market, but now, Xiao Xia dared not speak, mainly because he didn't know what to say!
Anyway, he just put them up. It was midday, the sunlight was bright, and the little mirrors shimmered, truly beautiful. Soon, a crowd had gathered. Someone asked the price: "What are these? How much are they?" Xiao Xia didn't understand the prices in the Ming Dynasty, so he casually said, "One tael of silver each, these are mirrors, blah blah blah..." The crowd all said, "Too expensive! Too expensive!"
Xiao Xia had learned this from watching TV. Those martial arts heroes would spend tens of taels of silver on a single meal, so why should he charge one tael?
Just then, a man dressed in fine silk and satin appeared before Xiao Xia and said, "Young master, please come to my residence. I have something to discuss." His tone suggested that Xiao Xia wasn't allowed to discuss anything with him. Xiao Xia was confused. What was he being asked to do? Pay a stall fee? Did ancient times have city management officials? This was too traditional! Despite his doubts, Xiao Xia pushed his bicycle and followed the man.
After walking a short distance and crossing several streets, Xiao Xia thought to himself, "This is the location of the XX Building where I work, this is the location of the restaurant where I eat lunch every day, this is the location of the XX Supermarket." He continued his calculations until he arrived at a mansion. Xiao Xia wasn't particularly impressed. Although the mansion was quite grand at the time, it wasn't even as large as a modern three-star hotel. The guide said with no small amount of pride, "This is the master's residence. We heard that you have some rare treasures to sell, so we specially invited you here." Xiao Xia felt a little relieved. So it was just to buy something! Why didn't they say so earlier? It was like they were about to arrest me.
Entering the house, with its winding corridors and exquisite decorations far surpassing modern craftsmanship, Xiao Xia couldn't help but admire them. "Our ancestors were so amazing back then! They really brought us honor!"
Xiao Xia followed the guide into a large hall, where an old man, the kind often seen in TV dramas, sat in a grand chair and greeted Xiao Xia politely: "Young master, it must be tiring to invite you to my residence. You must be very tired." Xiao Xia thought to himself, "This is what a wealthy landowner should be like. He seems so rich and yet so cultured.
" He quickly returned the greeting, saying, "Not at all, it's my duty."
"May I have the rare treasures for sale so that I may have a look?"
"Of course."
Xiao Xia took out a mirror from his bag and handed it to the guide. The guide respectfully presented it to the old man, who picked it up and examined it carefully.
"This item is remarkably similar to the bronze mirror my daughter uses. Could it also be a cosmetic item?" The old man was indeed a knowledgeable person. Glass mirrors were only introduced to China in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Yongle was in the early Ming dynasty, and no one would have known about glass mirrors back then.
Xiao Xia replied, "Sir, you are truly knowledgeable and discerning. This is a glass mirror, which reflects images more clearly than a bronze mirror. This treasure is one of only a few in the entire court; I refined it from the deep mountains, unknown to the world." Xiao Xia's limited knowledge of mirrors was more than enough to fool these Ming Dynasty ancestors, and with a touch of TV drama jargon, he even believed it himself.
The old man smiled broadly, "Didn't you hear that young master is a remarkable person? This treasure is truly exquisite; even my own face is perfectly reflected in it! May I ask how much it costs?"
As a modern small-time businessman, Xiao Xia possessed some shrewdness. This old man seemed to have such high status that he would never refuse a price if you dared to ask, but Xiao Xia was a modern man; to survive in the Ming Dynasty, it was better to be even smarter.
"If you like this item, sir, I can present it to you as a small gift; I would be deeply honored!"
If this were today, anyone hearing this would surely call Xiao Xia a sycophant, but the old man was genuinely pleased. In modern terms, he thought, "This rascal really knows how to get things done!
" "Young master's behavior is truly admirable. I have not wasted your sincerity. I sincerely invite you to rest at my humble abode for a few days, as a token of my hospitality."
This was exactly what Xiao Xia wanted, and he replied generously, "Thank you for your kindness, sir. I also have a few mirrors that I can give you."
He then took out several square, round, and wavy mirrors and handed them to the guide.
The old man was overjoyed. In the Ming Dynasty, these unique mirrors were even more attractive than Yongle imperial porcelain! He then said to the guide, "Please bring out my wife and daughter to thank you for your generous gift. You may choose a few items."
A moment later, a noblewoman of about thirty, followed by a girl of about fifteen or sixteen, gracefully entered the hall, bowing to greet Xiaoxia.
Xiaoxia returned the greeting while observing the two. The woman, though the old man's wife, was stunningly beautiful. Though only around thirty, she wore elegant, light makeup, and her silk dress subtly accentuated her slender figure. If it weren't for the slightly thicker winter clothes, the woman's waistline would have been even more alluring to Xiaoxia. The girl also wore her hair in a similar style to the woman, her eyes lively and adorable. A glance at Xiaoxia caused a blush to rise on her face—a
shyness Xiaoxia had never seen in a modern girl before.
After a few polite exchanges, the woman and girl each chose a mirror. Xiaoxia was then settled in, and there was nothing else noteworthy.
A few peaceful days passed, and Xiaoxia occasionally went out for a bike ride. That day, Xiao Xia had just ridden his bicycle back when the girl was waiting for him at the door, still as shy as ever.
"This thing you're riding, young master, I've never seen before. Could
you tell me why?" Xiao Xia laughed heartily. "My old bicycle is a rare sight in the Ming Dynasty!" he exclaimed. "Want to learn how to ride it?
This is a bicycle. After I invented it, I only used it as a means of transportation." Xiao Xia, shameless as ever, always trying to make himself look good.
"If you don't mind my clumsiness, young master, I'm willing to give it a try."
Xiao Xia secretly planned, thinking, "A fifteen or sixteen-year-old girl in the Ming Dynasty should be of marriageable age. Let me flirt with her a bit."
"Miss, you can't ride this bicycle."
"Why?"
"Well… I'm really embarrassed
to say." "Please speak freely, sir."
"This bicycle is a spirit creature. It only listens to me. I'm intimate with it every day, and it's beneath me. It can feel my scent and presence. It might be resistant to strangers."
"Well, sir, could you let me try? Perhaps it will become attached to me and obey my commands."
The girl, after hearing Xiao Xia's words, didn't realize it was blatant flirting, but she was still somewhat smitten.
Xiao Xia smiled inwardly. Go ahead and ride it. If you fall, I'll teach you carefully. So, Xiao Xia pushed the bicycle in front of the girl and let her push it. After a few simple explanations, the girl started riding.
Sure enough, as expected, the girl fell after less than a meter; she couldn't maintain her balance at all. Seeing the girl about to fall, Xiao Xia caught her in a bear hug. The girl screamed, perhaps startled, or perhaps taken aback by the sudden embrace, and buried her head in Xiao Xia's chest. The bicycle clattered to the ground.
Xiao Xia comforted her for a few moments, then said, "I told you bicycles have a spirit. I'll transfer some of that spirit to you, and you'll be able to ride it with ease." The girl nodded in agreement.
They went to Xiao Xia's room. Xiao Xia, on the bed, beckoned the girl to get on. The girl now obeyed him without question. Xiao Xia undressed first, then had the girl do the same. The girl shyly closed her eyes, slowly beginning to listen to Xiao Xia's words. Xiao Xia thought to himself, "What's the use of closing your eyes? I can still see what I need to see."
Naked, they faced each other. Xiao Xia began foreplay, pretending to chant some incantation he himself couldn't understand, then reaching his hand towards the girl's crotch, lingering on her private parts and stroking them. The girl gradually became aroused, her blush turning into a flushed, passionate red. Once she became aroused, Xiao Xia began kissing her head, then, like a ritual, slowly kissed her entire body. Overwhelmed with excitement, Xiao Xia failed before he could even begin. He berated himself for his weakness while comforting himself, telling himself there would be many more opportunities.
Xiao Xia and the girl dressed neatly and began teaching her to ride a bicycle. Xiao Xia held the back seat to help her balance, constantly chanting to the bicycle, "Heaven and earth spirits, obey my command, bless the girl, may she achieve victory..."—just some words to coax her. After
three to five days, the girl received a small amount of spiritual energy from Xiao Xia each day (you know what I mean), and slowly learned to ride a bicycle.
As time passed, Xiao Xia became infatuated with the girl. When an opportunity arose, he proposed marriage to the old man, who readily agreed. From then on, Xiao Xia settled down in this Ming Dynasty family. It is said that later, many women in the old master's mansion learned to ride bicycles, and Xiaoxia was happy to teach them.
