Chinese female soldiers in the Vietnam War (repost)

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
The story takes place during the Sino
-Vietnamese War in the vast forest west of Dongshan Mountain on the north side of Laoshan.
A reconnaissance section chief from one of our units, along with female reconnaissance soldier Shi Dai and five soldiers from the reconnaissance detachment, were escorting four Vietnamese prisoners down from Hill 601 of Laoshan. Just as they crossed a hill, a Vietnamese special forces team emerged seemingly out of the dense jungle, as if they had been waiting there specifically to greet the women. In the dim light of dawn, eight enemies pointed their guns at them simultaneously.

"Camclongaiotuglen!" meant for the women to raise their hands.

Based on intelligence gathered by our army, Shi Dai spoke fluent Vietnamese, informing the enemy that they were from the 78th Division's special forces. The 78th Division's special forces were known to operate in this forest, often using it as a base to maneuver against our troops in these towering mountains.

The Vietnamese special forces team was genuinely intimidated by Shi Dai and reluctantly made their way towards the summit. But the gurgling sounds carried far through the silent mountains. The enemy had discovered a weakness; it turned out that the enemy's 78th Division special forces had been placed under the command of the Second Military Region's Special Forces Headquarters two days prior. Our intelligence was failing, and trouble followed. There were no of our fraternal units nearby.

Just as Shan Nu gave the order to "prepare for battle," a string of sparks flashed before Shi Dai's eyes. A grenade had already landed right in front of her. She froze, losing all her shrewdness, and stood there waiting to die.

"Take cover!" Someone kicked the grenade away and shoved Shi Dai to the ground—it was Shan Nu.

The grenade exploded nearby, shrapnel flying everywhere.

"Are you hurt?" Shi Dai asked anxiously.

He shook his head, remaining silent.

A fierce battle was inevitable. The enemy, positioned in an arc, flanked us from above. This was a crucial battleground for both sides, and also the area where Vietnamese special forces were most active. If the nearby Vietnamese troops were alerted, they would block our escape from both sides, and no one would get out alive.

Shan Nu divided her men into four groups. The first group, consisting of one soldier and herself, would use the complex terrain to directly block the enemy. The second and third groups, each with one soldier, would use the brief darkness before dawn to flank the enemy from both sides. The fourth group, consisting of Shi Dai and two soldiers, would quickly retreat with the prisoners.

"Thump, thump, thump," the enemy, presumably tapping their helmets with submachine gun magazines, began shouting at our troops:

"nopsungrhonggiet."

"chungtovrhoanhorgtuhing."

"What are the enemy shouting?" Shan Nu asked Shi Dai beside her.

Shi Dai said they wanted us to lay down our weapons and surrender.

"You and the prisoners, retreat quickly!"

The two soldiers accepted the order and left. Shi Dai, brandishing her pistol and rolling up her sleeves, refused to leave, determined to show off her marksmanship. She had won second place in the military academy's pistol shooting competition and was a renowned sharpshooter. She couldn't miss this excellent opportunity to shoot at live targets. Besides, she couldn't abandon Shan Nu and escape alone. Although their relationship wasn't explicitly stated, they both understood each other's feelings for them. Now, facing life and death, how could she leave him behind? Furthermore, given her physical condition, even if she were to leave, she might not be able to go very far. Staying meant more strength.

"Obey orders, retreat!"

Shan Nu roared at her, her voice as heavy as a tiger's.

"No retreat, I won't retreat!" Shi Dai became stubborn, fearless. When she was five, even boys didn't dare jump from the second floor, but she did.

"Disobey orders! After the battle, you can suggest the organization punish me; I'm not afraid of punishment."

Shan Nu glared at her fiercely, her expression as if she wanted to shoot her to vent her anger.

The enemy began their attack.

Bullets rained down like a storm, sweeping across the battlefield like iron brooms. The stray bullets struck the rocks, sparks flying and smoke billowing, the smell of gunpowder filling the air and bringing tears to the eyes.

The enemy fired wildly for a while, then, seeing no return fire, stopped and began shouting insults. A moment later, four enemies crouched low, stealthily approaching—thirty meters, twenty meters, eighteen meters… The woman's composure only alarmed Shi Dai. She lightly kicked him; he turned and glared at her fiercely. She couldn't bear it; she feared she would jump up and scream, just like the female soldier Kamelikova in the Soviet film "The Dawns Here Are Quiet," who was killed by the Germans.

The enemy was still closing in…

Shi Dai pulled the trigger of her pistol, firing two shots in quick succession, taking down the two leading Vietnamese soldiers, both hitting them in the head. At the same moment Shi Dai fired, the remaining two enemies were also killed. Our soldiers, flanking from both sides, also opened fire with their submachine guns. The enemy, attacked from three sides, waged guerrilla warfare against our forces amidst the towering rocks and dense forest.

Fifteen minutes later, dawn broke. The gunfire subsided. When Shi Dai carefully climbed the enemy's former position, she found only corpses of both sides scattered among the rocks and grass; not a single living person remained, and the woman was nowhere to be seen. Crows cawed incessantly in the trees like mourners, their mournful cries more terrifying than bombs. Shi Dai picked up a submachine gun and the last magazine of bullets from a fallen soldier, and dragged her weary body down the mountain. She needed to find a safe place to rest. She dared not take the main road, so she ventured into the forest.

This was a very old, primeval forest, its layers and colors extremely distinct. Giant cypresses, silver firs, and oaks stretched to the horizon, their verdant green and azure merging seamlessly with the sky; interspersed among them were banana trees, wisteria, and climbing vines. The Panzhihua tree, also known as the Hero Tree, is majestic with upright branches, each slender twig adorned with magnificent blossoms. The flowers are fiery red, their centers a vibrant yellow. On the ground grows a type of orchid the soldiers called "Old Mountain Orchid," its fragrance permeating the entire forest. If it weren't for the war, this place would surely be a classical and tranquil paradise, far more beautiful than Monet's "Wild Mountains."

However, forests are also the easiest places to get lost.

After resting for a while, Shi Dai, who had spent the entire day hiding, was still circling this seemingly forested place. When she recognized the large oak tree charred by lightning, her legs gave way, and she slid down its blackened trunk to the ground. She had set off from under this oak tree after the early morning skirmish. "What the hell!" she thought, sitting on the ground, sobbing and wiping away tears like a child abandoned on the street.

A light rain had just passed, and the mountain soil was soaked with water. Shi Dai's clothes were cold and wet in the muddy water. She didn't want to get up, nor did she want to move. Always pampered, she now understood what exhaustion felt like. To make matters worse, her "precious toy" had also joined the fray; her lower abdomen throbbed with pain, and her thighs felt like they were crawling with countless worms, unbearably itchy; blood seeped into the murky rainwater, swirling in circles as she slowly drifted into a daze.

Mountain mist surged from the valley floor, thick as rain, like a giant beast, swallowing the entire forest, and swallowing her too. East, west, south, north—who knew? She took off her submachine gun, leaned against her right shoulder, nestled against an oak tree, and pulled out two cube-sized "761" compressed biscuits to gnaw on. These were filling; the soldiers in the foxhole had given her plenty.
