Paradise Lost: The Last Line of Defense

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-05-05
At dawn, Mingde had a dream.
A man stood watching him from a field overgrown with reeds. Without needing to ask who he was, it was clear he was Xiulin's husband. Xiulin was nearby, and she pretended not to notice, walking towards the wide road in the wild wind, leaving Mingde and the man staring at each other, reeds in hand.
These are the only memories left from the dream; the person's expression has vanished, leaving only a cold, all-seeing feeling in my mind.
Upon waking from his dream, Mingde immediately looked around and saw Xiulin sleeping with her back to him. She had been completely naked before falling asleep, and he didn't know when she had gotten up and changed into her pajamas.
The clock beside my pillow was pointing to 5:30, and dawn was approaching. The hem of the thick curtains covering the balcony was slightly white.
Mingde gazed at the window, which was beginning to turn white, and recalled the dream he had just had.
Is the white reed in my dream a vivid image of the vast grasslands of Qingtiangang? Perhaps it is the man who has always been thinking of Xiulin that I finally dreamt of, but because I have never seen him before, his expression and appearance are vague and indistinct.
But the way Xiulin walked straight through the two of them seemed increasingly intriguing.
Following his rambling dream, he got up and drew back the curtains on the balcony. A thick fog still shrouded the outside, with only the area around the summit of Meilun Mountain appearing faintly like a light ink painting.
It would be a little while before it was fully light, and the fog covering the plains drifted rapidly.
Mingde fell asleep again, and when he opened his eyes again it was past 7:30, and the morning light coming through the curtains was much brighter.
Xiulin was still asleep. Mingde got out of bed alone and looked out through the gap in the balcony curtains. Under the clear autumn sky, Meilun Mountain was right in front of him. However, the area below the mountain was still shrouded in fog, with white, round fog clumps hovering in mid-air.
The last time I visited this hotel was also in autumn. As the dust and fog dissipated, the golf course gradually emerged in the light mist, and I could already see a few figures near the teeing area.
Mingde remembered the excuse he used to leave home that he was going to play ball in Hualien today. Did his wife believe him? Mingde felt guilty for a moment, but immediately closed the curtains as if to get rid of the thought, the action waking Xiulin.
"They're already up..."
"Just woke up."
Mingde recalled his dream about Mr. Xiulin, but didn't mention it and went back to bed.
I want to sleep a little longer.
Playing golf in the crisp autumn air is certainly enjoyable, but nothing can compare to Xiulin's soft, smooth skin.
He reached out and untied the ribbons of her nightgown. Xiulin asked softly, "What are you doing?"
No answer is needed; I just want to immerse myself in morning sex.
"It's still early!"
That being said, there was indeed very little time left for their tryst.
Mingde kissed the nipple exposed at the neckline of her pajamas as if being chased by time, and embraced her lower body with both hands.
The fog outside had dissipated, but the two inside were still in the middle of the night.
At dawn, she dreamt of Xiulin's husband, but she couldn't remember his features at all.
Although Mingde didn't tell Xiulin about the dream, the cold and unpleasant feeling only aroused his desire.
On the bed where the morning light couldn't reach, Mingde tormented Xiulin more than usual, keeping her hovering between the brink of orgasm and the moment she was about to climax. Xiulin couldn't take it anymore and begged him several times, but he still left her suspended in mid-air.
Xiulin had no idea that his cold torment was because of Liming's dream.
After finally reaching her climax, she whispered "You're so naughty" to him, and her coquettish and resentful expression was endearing. The two then embraced and fell asleep again.
Is it true that women are more likely to fall into a deep sleep after an orgasm? When Mingde woke up, Xiulin was still asleep.
It was already 9:30. The light streaming through the curtains was brighter, and birds were chirping outside. The fog had probably dissipated, and the sky was clear and pleasant; people were chasing the ball. In contrast to these healthy individuals, Mingde was still in bed enjoying the warmth of Xiulin's body.
Although he was the only one immersed in this lazy, lewd, unhealthy, and immoral world, Mingde was still enjoying himself at that moment.
He moved closer to Xiulin, who bent her neck slightly and slowly opened her eyes.
"She's asleep again."
"Because I was too rough..."
"Don't say that..."
Xiulin reached out to stop Mingde from speaking, and glanced at the clock beside her pillow.
"Oh no, it's already ten o'clock."
Today I originally planned to visit Taroko Gorge and Tianxiang, and then return to Taipei in the afternoon, but my decadent and careless time is gradually coming to an end.
"Get up?"
Xiulin urged him again, and Mingde finally stopped kneading her breasts and got out of bed.
The curtains were still drawn in the room, making it feel like night. As soon as Xiulin got out of bed, she went into the bathroom to take a shower.
Mingde turned on the TV, and while the two were engrossed in sex, nothing particularly changed in the world.
Soon, Xiulin came out of the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror. It was Mingde's turn to take a bath. He had been intimate with Xiulin almost all night, but he didn't feel like he had absorbed her scent. Mingde loved the lightness of Xiulin's skin.
After taking a bath, Xiulin came out of the bathroom and found the curtains drawn. She was combing her hair at the dressing table by the window.
Mingde longed to stroke that fair and slender neck, and said to Xiulin in the mirror:
"it's beautiful……"
"I'm almost embarrassed to say it, but it's become so much easier to do my makeup since I've been with you."
"Maybe after doing that, my hormones were flowing more actively, and even this part of me felt slippery."
Mingde lightly touched her arm, and Xiulin quickly dodged away.
"No, it will mess up your hair."
"It's okay if things get messy." Mingde gently kissed Xiulin's neck from behind.
"After sexual satisfaction, a woman's skin becomes more radiant, while a man becomes more and more listless."
"That's not true."
"This is the inherent fate of both males and females, and in the end, the male is eaten by the female."
The word "destiny" seemed funny. Xiulin smiled in the mirror and said, "Poor Mr. Xiong, hurry up and put on your clothes." Under Xiulin's command, Mingde reluctantly took off his pajamas and changed his clothes.
After having a late lunch at the hotel restaurant, the two left. The air was a bit cool, but not cold. They headed to Taroko Gorge in the glaring autumn sunshine.
There were many tourists on Sunday. They got off at the Nine Turns Cave on the way and then walked to Tianxiang.
This route has numerous winding tunnels, through which one can glimpse the steep cliffs on the opposite bank and the deep, treacherous Liwu Valley.
The two enjoyed the autumn chill and gentle breeze along the way, and arrived in Tianxiang at four o'clock in the afternoon.
If I want to get back to Taipei, I'll probably get stuck in traffic if I don't go down the mountain right away.
"How about it?"
Seeing that she hadn't received a clear answer after asking, perhaps Xiulin didn't want to leave yet.
"Is it alright if we go back a little later?"
When asked again, Xiulin nodded, and Mingde decided to stay in Tianxiang a little longer.
After navigating the congested mountain roads back to the restaurant in the city and having an early dinner, I looked back and saw that the sky surrounding Meilun Mountain was already flushed red.
Because of the high mountains, the sun sets quickly, and the slanting sunlight that leaks through the darkening clouds cuts across the mountainside and falls straight to the ground.
Mingde walked to the window, gazing at the mountains appearing under the red sky, and whispered to Xiulin:
"How wonderful it would be if I could stay here forever!"
Xiulin didn't answer, but seemed to nod slightly. Mingde mustered his courage and asked again, "Will you stay another night?"
Xiulin nodded as she looked at the fading twilight and said, "Okay..."
To be honest, Mingde didn't really mean to ask her out; he thought she would refuse, so he made the request hastily.
"Really?"
Are you alright?
When she countered with her question, Mingde was momentarily at a loss for words.
Indeed, although it wasn't that he couldn't stay even if he wanted to, he still needed to contact his wife. He hadn't thought of an excuse yet, and there were still things to do at the company tomorrow. Fortunately, it was a relatively easy job, with nothing urgent to do, but he still had to be at the company by around ten o'clock at the latest.
What he was most concerned about was Xiulin's home.
Even though we'll go out with everyone after the class reunion, is it okay to stay away from home for two nights in a row? Besides, tomorrow is Monday, and Xiulin's husband should be at work too.
"I can figure something out, you on your end..."
He swallowed the words "You still have a husband," stealing a glance at Xiulin's expression. Xiulin, still gazing at the sky ablaze with the crimson glow of the setting sun, whispered:
"If you can do it, then I can do it too."
As the sun set, the ground surrounded by mountains quickly lost its luster and turned dark.
Looking at the dark and desolate ground, Mingde recalled the face of Mr. Xiulin that he had dreamed of at dawn.
A while has passed, and the outline has become blurred, but the cold impression from that time still lingers to this day.
Did Xiulin foresee that going back would lead to a dispute with her husband, so she decided to stay?
"Really?" Mingde asked again, not so much out of concern for Xiulin, but rather to ask himself if he could shoulder the responsibility of Xiulin not wanting to go home.
“No problem.” Xiulin remained gazing at the darkening mountains, her resolve unwavering.
Knowing that Xiulin was determined to stay another night, Mingde went to the public phone at the restaurant entrance and called the hotel.
Fortunately, it was Sunday night, and all the hotels were empty, so I could stay in the room from last night.
Afterwards, somewhat troubled, he called home, but his wife wasn't there; the answering machine was on. Mingde secretly rejoiced and simply said, "My friend and I are staying at the same hotel tonight, so I'm not going back," before hanging up.
He's fine for now, but Xiulin is having problems.
Back at the restaurant, after telling Xiulin that he had booked a room, he asked her, "Do you want to make a call?"
After a moment of contemplation, Xiulin got up and left her seat, returning within a few minutes.
"Is he alright?"
When Mingde asked anxiously, Xiulin replied indifferently, "I don't know."
"But tomorrow is Monday. If you really want to go back now, you can."
"You want to go back, don't you?"
Upon hearing this question, Mingde hurriedly shook his head: "I think you're more important, aren't you?"
"I'll figure something out."
Xiulin spoke with a "what the heck" tone; since she herself had said so, there was no need to overthink it anymore.
"Then let's stick together tonight!"
Since Xiulin has already come to this realization, how can a man be intimidated? As for the outcome, as long as he is with Xiulin, there is nothing to be afraid of.
"Let's go!" Mingde suddenly felt elated, took Xiulin's hand and said, "Thank you!"
It would be more appropriate to say this as a thank you to Xiulin for giving him the courage to stay, rather than as a message to Xiulin who decided to stay.
Deciding to spend another night, the two returned to the hotel.
Returning to the hotel where they had just checked out before noon gave them a strange and indescribable feeling. The receptionist acted as if nothing had happened and led them to the same room as yesterday.
It was already dark around us. The waiter opened the door and lit the lamp. The bed and the table and chairs were arranged exactly as they had been the night before.
After the waiter put down the luggage and left, the two stood in the room looking at each other, and suddenly embraced tightly without prior arrangement.
There's no need to exchange any languages, because they understand each other's feelings too well.
"You never came home."
"You have to stay with me one more night."
The words were not spoken, but the tightness of their embrace conveyed their feelings.
Mingde hugged Xiulin even tighter, kissing her as he thought to himself, "Is it alright even if the master scolds me?"
Xiulin responded to his gift, but also asked herself, "Is it okay if my wife gets angry?"
They greedily kissed each other's lips, both answering in their hearts:
"It doesn't matter what she says."
"I can't control what he says anymore."
Their lips parted, and Mingde held Xiulin's head close, whispering sweet nothings in her ear. He knew they were crossing the line.
Even though they love each other, there is a final line of defense that they cannot cross.
Having come this far, there's no turning back. Crossing this line would mean the front line of a hail of bullets, where the two of them might be shot and fall to the ground, never to rise again.
"Sure..."
When Mingde asked again to confirm, Xiulin's face was already wet with tears.
Was this sudden burst of tears due to worry about the trouble that would ensue if I didn't go home for two consecutive days? Or was it because I was overwhelmed with emotion after making this decision? In any case, it's pointless to ask why I'm crying now.
After wiping Xiulin's tear-stained cheeks with his hand, Mingde took off her coat and unbuttoned her blouse.
Her coat and blouse fell to the ground at Xiulin's feet, who stood with her eyes closed, and her skirt also fell down, but Xiulin remained motionless like a doll.
Last night, the pale moonlight seeped quietly into the bedside from the balcony, but tonight, due to the thick clouds, the balcony is also locked in darkness.
Xiulin was only wearing a bra and panties. Mingde took off his own clothes, picked up Xiulin, and carried her to bed.
The bed was just as wide and springy as it had been the night before. The two of them collapsed onto the bed and embraced tightly. Their chests were pressed together, their waists were close together, and their limbs were intertwined. Xiulin's body heat gradually transferred to Mingde. At the same time, the thoughts of family, wife, and work that had been swirling in their minds all disappeared into the distance.
At this moment, he was completely absorbed in Xiulin's warmth, and Mingde had the illusion of being slowly drawn into a boundless space. It was a feeling of isolation, and also a feeling of decadence. He couldn't go on like this; if he continued, he would be rejected by society and fall into an irreversible abyss. Although he kept telling himself that he couldn't go on like this, in fact, he was already familiar with this feeling of decadence, and his body and mind were intoxicated by the pleasure of decadence.
"Danger..." The word flashed through Mingde's mind, but the two were already speechless, once again falling into the garden of pleasure where they indulged in each other's desires.
