Chinese female soldiers in the Vietnam War

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
The story takes place during the Sino-Vietnamese War, in the vast forest north of Laoshan and west of Balihe East Mountain.
A reconnaissance section chief from one of our units, along with female reconnaissance officer Shi Dai and five soldiers from the reconnaissance detachment, were escorting four Vietnamese prisoners down from Laoshan Hill 601. Just as they crossed a hill, a Vietnamese special forces team emerged seemingly out of the dense jungle, as if they had been waiting there specifically to greet Shan Nu and her companions. In the dim light of dawn, eight enemy soldiers pointed their guns at them.
"Cam clong aio tug len!" meant for Shan Nu and her companions to raise their hands.
Based on information gathered by our intelligence department, Shi Dai spoke fluent Vietnamese, informing the enemy that we were the 78th Division's special forces. The 78th Division's special forces were the ones who frequently operated in this forest. They often used the forest as cover, maneuvering against our troops amidst these towering mountains.
At that moment, the Vietnamese special forces were genuinely intimidated by Shi Dai and reluctantly made their way to the mountaintop. But the gurgling sounds carried far in the silent mountains. The enemy noticed the deception; it turned out that the enemy's 78th Division's special forces had been placed under the command of the Second Military Region's Special Operations Headquarters two days prior. Our intelligence had failed, and trouble followed. There were no other fraternal units nearby.
The moment Shan Nu uttered the order "Prepare for battle," a string of sparks flashed before Shi Dai's eyes. A grenade had already landed in front of her. She froze, losing all semblance of intelligence, standing there waiting to die.
"Get down!" Someone kicked the grenade away and shoved Shi Dai to the ground—it was Shan Nu.
The grenade exploded nearby, shrapnel whizzing through the air.
"Are you hurt?" Shi Dai asked anxiously.
He shook his head, remaining silent.
A fierce battle was inevitable. The enemy, positioned in an arc, flanked the area from above. This was a crucial point of contention between the two sides, and also the area where the Vietnamese special forces were most active. If the nearby Vietnamese troops were alerted, they would block the enemy from both sides, and no one would escape alive.
Shan Nu divided her personnel into four groups. The first group consisted of one soldier and Shan Nu herself, who would use the complex terrain to directly block the enemy. The second and third groups each consisted of one soldier, who would take advantage of the brief darkness before dawn to flank the enemy from both sides. The fourth group, consisting of Shi Dai and two soldiers, would quickly retreat with the prisoners.
"Bang, bang, bang," the enemy was probably banging their submachine gun magazines against their helmets, shouting at our troops:
"Nop sung rhong giet."
"Chung tov rhoan horg tuh ing."
"What are the enemy shouting?" Shan asked Shi Dai beside her.
Shi Dai said they wanted us to lay down our weapons and surrender.
"You and the prisoners, retreat quickly!"
Two soldiers accepted the order and left. Shi Dai waved her pistol, rolled up her sleeves, and refused to leave, wanting to show off her marksmanship. She had won second place in the military academy's pistol shooting competition and was a famous female marksman. She couldn't miss this good opportunity to shoot at live targets. Besides, she couldn't abandon Shan Nu and escape alone. Although their relationship wasn't explicitly defined, they both understood each other's feelings for them. Now that they were facing a life-or-death situation, how could she leave him behind? Besides, given her physical condition at the time, even if she were allowed to leave, she might not be able to go very far. Staying meant having more strength.
"Obey orders and retreat!"
Shan Nu roared at her, her tone as deep and menacing as a tiger's.
"No retreat, I won't retreat!" Shi Dai became stubborn, fearless and undaunted. When she was five years old, even boys didn't dare to jump from the second floor, but she did.
"If you disobey orders, after the battle, you can suggest the organization punish me. I'm not afraid of punishment."
Shan Nu glared at her fiercely, her expression as if she wanted to shoot her to vent her anger.
The enemy began their attack.
A hail of bullets swept across like an iron broom, the stray shells striking the rocks, sparks flying and puffs of smoke rising. The smell of gunpowder filled the air, and tears streamed down my face. After
a brief, chaotic barrage of fire, seeing no response from us, the enemy stopped and began shouting insults. A moment later, four enemy soldiers crouched low, stealthily approaching, thirty meters, twenty meters, eighteen meters… The woman's composure, however, alarmed Shi Dai. She lightly kicked him; he turned and glared at her fiercely. She couldn't take it anymore, afraid she would jump up and scream, just like the female soldier Kamelikova in the Soviet film "The Dawns Here Are Quiet," who was killed by the Germans in the same way.
The enemy was still approaching...
Stéphane pulled the trigger of her pistol, firing two shots in quick succession, taking down the two leading Viet Cong soldiers, both hit in the head. At the same moment Stéphane fired, the remaining two enemy soldiers were also killed. Our soldiers, who had flanked from both sides, also opened fire with their submachine guns. The enemy, attacked from three sides, waged guerrilla warfare against our forces among the towering rocks and dense forest.
Fifteen minutes later, it was dawn. The gunfire subsided. As Shi Dai cautiously climbed the enemy-held position, she found only the corpses of both sides lying among the rocks and bushes; not a single person was alive, and the woman was nowhere to be seen. Crows cackled incessantly in the trees, their mournful cries more terrifying than bombs. Shi Dai picked up a submachine gun and the last magazine of ammunition from the body of a fallen soldier, and dragged her weary body down the mountain. She needed to find a safe place to rest. She dared not take the main road, so she disappeared into the forest.
This is a primeval forest with distinct layers and colors. Giant cypresses, silver fir, and oaks connect to the sky, their verdant greens blending seamlessly with the blue expanse. Interspersed among them are banana trees, wisteria, and climbing vines. The climbing vine, also known as the hero tree, is majestic, with upright branches, each slender branch adorned with magnificent blossoms. The flowers are fiery red, their centers a vibrant yellow. On the ground grows a type of flower the soldiers called "Old Mountain Orchid," its fragrance permeating the entire forest. If it weren't for the war, this would surely be a classical and tranquil paradise, far more beautiful than Monet's "Wild Mountains."
However, forests are also where one most easily gets lost.
After resting for a while, Shi Dai, having spent the entire day hiding and lurking, was still wandering in this seemingly dense forest. When she recognized the large oak tree charred by lightning, her legs went weak, and she slid down its blackened trunk to the ground. She had set off from this very oak tree after the skirmish at dawn. What the hell! She sat on the ground, sobbing and wiping away tears like a child abandoned on the street.
A light rain had just passed, and the mountain soil was soaked with water. Shi Dai's clothes were icy cold, soaked in the mud. She didn't want to get up, nor did she want to move. Always pampered, she now understood what exhaustion truly felt like. What brought her the worst of all was that her "precious toy" had also joined in the fun; her lower abdomen throbbed with pain, and her thighs felt like they were crawling with countless worms, unbearably itchy. Blood seeped into the murky rainwater, swirling in circles as she slowly drifted into a daze.
A mountain fog rose from the valley floor, thick as the rain, like a giant beast, swallowing the entire forest, and swallowing her too. She was lost, facing east, west, south, and north. She took off her submachine gun, leaned against her right shoulder, nestled against an oak tree, and pulled out two Rubik's Cube-sized "761" compressed biscuits to munch on. These kept her hungry; the soldiers in the cat-ear cave had given her plenty.
