His fingers tapped unconsciously on the steering wheel. Looking at the surging traffic ahead, Ren Chenfeng frowned, suddenly turned the steering wheel, and swerved onto the empty highway next to him.
Shu Lian turned her head to look out the window. Although her emotions were much calmer than before, she still couldn't help but shed tears. Just as she stiffened and reached for the door, Ren Chenfeng's voice came from beside her: "When I was in a bad mood, I would come here to sit for a while."
He held a tissue in his hand, and surprisingly, he didn't do anything inappropriate. He simply reached over and gently wiped away the tear stains on her face. After wiping them away, he stared at her for a long time, seemingly lost in thought, before letting go of her hand. "This is the first time I've brought a woman here. If you're in a bad mood, then all my efforts in coming here will have been wasted."
Ren Chenfeng sat for a while, then opened the car door and got out, leaning against the door and lighting a cigarette.
The mountains were high, a biting wind blew, and the winter was bleak, yet it couldn't obscure the scenery before him. A cigarette burned between the man's fingers; before him stretched rolling mountains, and behind him were bare trees, their red leaves fallen. Occasionally, a gust of wind would blow, swirling up a few yellowed leaves from the ground.
Shu Lian wrapped her clothes tighter around herself and stepped out of the car to see this scene. Although Ren Chenfeng was handsome and tall, he was always domineering and forceful. But the man in front of her was different from him, though she couldn't quite put her finger on what it was.
Seeing Shu Lian come out, Ren Chenfeng flicked the ash from his cigarette and smiled, "Isn't this place beautiful? I used to come here alone when I was little."
Shu Lian found a rock and sat down. She ignored him, wondering what had gotten into him, that he was suddenly telling her about his childhood.
“My mother’s grave is on that mountain in front of me. I wanted to visit her before, but I was afraid I would cry and be laughed at, so I found this place.”
“Although it’s too far away and I can’t see anything, I come here whenever I’m unhappy. I think my mom can see me, so I often talk to myself here.” Ren Chenfeng took a puff of his cigarette, raised an eyebrow at her, and said, “Heh, isn’t that ridiculous?”
His eyebrows were extremely thick, and when he raised them, they gave him a rather domineering air. Yet, he also had a smiling mouth, and when the corners of his lips turned up, they had a touch of wickedness and a touch of allure.
If he hadn't treated her like that before, Shu Lian thought, she wouldn't believe that a man like that couldn't find a woman, yet she didn't understand why he insisted on clinging to her.
“I don’t mind what happened between you and Han Che. After all, I bear a lot of responsibility for pushing you to this point.” Ren Chenfeng’s voice came over, but it seemed to be blown away by the wind and sounded a little muffled. “Shu Lian, I brought you to see my mother today because I wanted to tell her in front of her that I want to marry you.”
