"All Is Said" - 8

She woke up the next day to find it was not yet six o'clock. Having no more erotic dreams, she returned to her normal life. Following her usual route, she ran to the villa halfway up the mountain to admire the surrounding scenery. It seemed someone was cleaning inside; she could see figures moving in the distance. It appeared the owners were moving in. On her way down the mountain, Reese saw a delivery truck driving up, further confirming her suspicions. But all of this was irrelevant to her.
After resting at home for two days, Reese welcomed the start of the new school term.
The elite high school was indeed beautiful, exuding an aristocratic air. But no matter how glamorous it was, it was still just a school. Reese only wanted to finish her studies here, get into a public university, and learn some skills to make a living. The young masters and ladies who had gone directly from junior high to senior high immediately lost interest in the newcomer, Cheng Reese, seeing her unfashionable appearance and lack of any valuable jewelry.
Reese wasn't bothered by her classmates' coldness; in fact, it was better this way, as she didn't have the time or inclination to socialize. The students here were often pampered and spoiled, but not all of them were good-looking. The pretty and elegant ones formed their own cliques, while the fat, ugly, and poor ones huddled together. When the less pampered girls extended olive branches to Reese, she gladly joined them; having someone to talk to was better than being ignored.
Soon, Reese figured out who to befriend and who to avoid in this world. There was a friendly girl in her class named Ye Ping. Her parents were self-made and now ran a fast-food chain, very popular with young people in the city. Naturally, Ye Ping, coming from a humble background, wasn't favored by the privileged young ladies, but she also lacked the arrogance of a rich girl. Reese admired people like Ye Ping's parents because they could create their own success through hard work. She hoped to achieve something similar someday, or at least live independently and with dignity.
Ye Ping told Reese that the most arrogant person in the class was Joanna. As long as you don't mess with her and her followers, you'll basically be fine. Also, don't go to the senior year area; there are a few aristocratic young masters there, so stay far away.
"So, Joanna is the richest person in the class?" Reese asked.
"She's not the richest, but she's the most arrogant," Ye Ping said with disdain. She disliked Joanna, but didn't dare to confront her directly. "Actually, there's another one named Tang Tang who's even more powerful, but he basically never comes to school. I heard he's not in good health."
Reese understood that even if wealthy and powerful students didn't come to school, the teachers wouldn't care.
In the days that followed, Reese kept Ye Ping's words in mind, staying far away from those people both in and out of school. As long as she kept herself hidden, she could live her life peacefully. The key was to never steal their thunder. During breaks, she would stay in her seat and read; in class, even if she knew the answer to a question, she would pretend not to know; she wouldn't get high grades on tests; and as plain-looking as possible, she would prefer to be as unsophisticated as possible—she adopted a middle-of-the-road approach in everything.
"Joanna, Qi Chuchu, and Lin Lin usually don't bother with bookish girls; they're afraid of being associated with their unsophistication. Just act silly and clumsy, and don't try to outsmart or outbe pretty with them."
This was so simple and easy that Reese found it unbelievable; she had always thought that fighting and bullying were common in elite schools.
Ye Ping smiled and said, "The boys here are all busy looking for pretty girls, while the girls are busy looking for their Mr. Right. Just don't mess with Bai Xu and Tang Xianhe from the third grade."
Who are they?
"The school's Prince Charming, the role model for Joanna and the others."
Reese's initial thought was that she would never have any dealings with those rich kids. She figured as long as she studied diligently, she could easily get through the three years of high school. Later, she discovered that the academic atmosphere at the elite high school wasn't exactly rigorous. Because most students came from wealthy families and had no pressure to get into good schools, they didn't have afternoon classes; instead, they participated in various clubs and associations, forming small social circles. Reese wasn't interested in the tea ceremony, flower arranging, music, or dance clubs that the girls frequented. She loved sports, especially running, but those sports clubs didn't accept girls.
"How about joining a book club? It's basically just a bunch of free-spirited people hanging out together, doing what they like," Ye Ping suggested. This book club, formed by ordinary girls like them, was a haven for women who couldn't fit into high society. Reese thought it was a great idea and joined.
Because it was the least valued club, the reading club's activity room was located in an old building in a corner of the school. It was a long walk to get there, passing through a small grove of trees, but the scenery along the way was quite beautiful. Reese quickly became fascinated by the old building behind the grove. From the windows of the activity room, one could see a sea of green, untouched by any artificial embellishment, just pure emerald green. When she wasn't reading, she could spend an entire afternoon just staring at the grove and the small patch of grass in front of the building.
The room where the book club used to be a music classroom, and there was an upright piano against the wall. Reese was curious and asked, "Can this piano still be played?"
The girls all shook their heads. Ye Ping said, "We're all a bunch of people with no special skills. None of us can play the piano, and we don't even know if the piano is good."
Reese opened the violin and tried it out; surprisingly, it still produced sound. Intrigued, she played an old song from the nightclubs. Because of the violin, some notes were off, but the other girls all said it sounded good. When they asked what the song was, Reese lied and said it was an outdated love song.
From then on, the book club added another activity: playing the piano and singing. Ye Ping and the others hired someone to tune the piano, and then it became their toy; everyone, whether they knew how to play or not, would try to play a few tunes. Although most of the pieces were out of tune, they were very enjoyable. Reese never expected her high school life to become so interesting. She went to class in the morning, studied at home in the evening, and laughed with her new friends at noon. She also overcame her depression and became more cheerful.
The old building in the corner of the campus, the old music classroom, and the grove of trees became her paradise.
