She Wants Both Bread and Love - Chapter Sixty: Reaching the Shore

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-25 08:12:22
The helicopter pilot, looking at the empty sea, assumed he was seeing things and turned off the lights before leaving.
The environment suddenly turned dark again. He Mingsheng carefully carried her upwards, and only after confirming that the sound of the helicopter rotor was gradually fading away did they surface.
His dark, bright eyes vigilantly scanned the surroundings, only relaxing slightly after confirming it was safe.
Freed from his confinement, Xia Ye opened his chest and took a deep breath.
He Mingsheng silently clenched his fist in the water. The soft touch seemed to linger, and an indescribable feeling welled up within him.
As the surrounding helicopters gradually disappeared into the distance, He Mingsheng took advantage of the moment and said to her, "You go first, I'll follow behind you."
Xia Ye nodded, then dived into the water and swam away.
Just as the two had swum a dozen meters away, gunshots rang out behind them. Xia Ye prayed in his heart that no one would look over. As soon as he finished speaking, several bullets whizzed past his ears and entered the water, almost hitting him.
Xia Ye held her breath and swam forward with all her might, wondering if He Mingsheng behind her had escaped the same fate.
Then there was no more movement above; it turned out to be indiscriminate firing, which she guessed was to prevent anyone from being in the water.
She felt that there was no movement behind her, so she turned around and looked back. Fortunately, he was still behind her, but the distance between them had increased.
The wet, salty, and icy seawater filled his senses. After swimming for an unknown amount of time, the beach was finally in sight. Xia Ye crawled onto the shore and turned to look at the waves that tirelessly surged up to his legs.
I don't know how long I've been sitting in the tide, but he hasn't come ashore yet. Wasn't he following behind me? Where did he go?
The surging waves lapped against her calves, as if trying to pull her into the sea, greedily licking her skin.
The sound of laughter and chatter came from not far behind him. Xia Ye turned his head to look at the young people who were preparing a bonfire, and then looked back at the dark sea. A few seagulls flew by, raising a few ripples. Beneath the seemingly calm surface, however, lay countless turbulent waves.
Pulling her thoughts back to reality, Xia Ye bent her somewhat stiff arm and slowly stood up. She no longer waited. The seawater flowed down her body to her heels, and then was sucked into the damp sand, flowing towards the endless sea.
The sudden shift in her center of gravity made her stagger, as if she were walking on cotton, and she walked with a limp after a few steps.
Why is she all alone again? A warm tear slips down her cheek unnoticed, and she wonders for whom it fell.
As I passed by the group of young people preparing a bonfire, a clean bath towel disappeared onto one of the beach chairs when no one was looking.
Xia Ye, wrapped in a bath towel, walked towards the 24-hour 7-Eleven in the shopping street, where he should be able to borrow a cell phone to make a call.
"Madam, please stop for a moment and show me your identification." A man's voice sounded from behind, speaking in English.
Just as Xia Ye hesitated whether to turn around, another male voice came from behind him: "Excuse me, she is my wife, this is her identification."
Xia Ye turned her head and looked at the man who was handing his ID to the security guard. It was Dong Junhao, who was wearing beach shorts and a floral vest.
The security personnel approached, took the identification, looked at Xia Ye's face, and said, "Thank you for your cooperation," before returning the identification to him.
While saying "You're welcome," Dong Junhao walked to Xia Ye's side, put his arm around Xia Ye's shoulder, and headed towards the commercial street.
Seeing this, the security personnel behind him wisely turned around and looked for other suspicious persons.
It was already past midnight, and only a few 24-hour shops on the commercial street still had their lights on. The streets were deserted because of the earlier evacuation of the crowds, except for a few young people who were fearless and prepared to watch the sunrise from the shore.
“Thank you just now. Did you locate my yacht?” she asked.
Dong Junhao scratched his head sheepishly, "We're in the same industry, after all. Mr. Tang asked me to come just in case. How would I know where you are without your location?"
"Don't be nervous, I'm just asking. Can I borrow your phone for a moment?" She wasn't the kind of person to repay kindness with enmity.
"Mr. Tang said you should go back to the US and hide there for a while." He took out his phone and handed it over.
I logged into my email, found the phone number in my contacts, and dialed it.
"I said, did you hear that..." Dong Junhao hadn't finished speaking when he saw Xia Ye put his index finger to his pale lips, signaling him to be quiet.
The dial tone in the background pounded against Xia Ye's heart. Finally, just when she thought no one would answer, the call connected, but no one spoke.
She tried asking, "Qiao Zhe?"
A familiar voice came from the other end of the line, "It's me. Where are you now? Are you hurt?" Each question was more urgent than the last.
"I'm on West Beach, I'm safe for now, are you alright?" After saying that, she looked down at the scrapes on the outside of her knees and elbows from the fall, and suddenly her eyes reddened. She added with a sob in her voice, "I'm injured."
When I first fell into the water, I was soaked in the salty seawater. Due to the tense situation, I didn't have time to pay attention to the wound. It was just a momentary stinging pain, and then I became numb.
Now that attention has suddenly shifted, the abrasions on my knee seem to stand out under the dim streetlights, and the pain seems to be amplified as well.
