Chapter Six: Questioning
After the corn harvest, the days grew colder and colder. The continuous autumn rain, though somewhat chilly, couldn't stop the mountain
people from working. They still had to prepare winter fodder for their livestock. Until one night, a heavy
snow fell from the sky, and they realized winter had arrived. They all stayed indoors, not venturing out, the whole family
huddled around the fire.
Tie Niu had been staying home for many days. New Year's Eve arrived in the blink of an eye, and the snow showed no sign of stopping, but the New Year still
had to be celebrated! Cui Fen and her mother-in-law busied themselves all morning, finally making the necessary preparations for the New Year's Eve dinner.
Seeing his wife put firewood into the stove, Tie Niu struck a match and threw it in. It went out, so he struck
another, and it lit. He quickly threw himself on the ground and blew loudly into the stove, billowing smoke that choked
him and brought tears to his eyes. He looked up and saw his sister, her eyes red and swollen, walking in, tears streaming down her face,
her feet soaked with snow.
"Sister! What are you crying about on New Year's Day?!" Tie Niu shouted, and the whole family surrounded her, pulling at
Cai Feng to ask why she was crying. Seeing people trying to comfort her, Cai Feng stamped her feet and cried even harder, "I don't want
to live anymore... I don't want to live anymore! I can't get through this New Year!" Her disheveled hair trembled violently.
"Did Brother Fugui hit you again?" Tie Niu asked twice. His sister wiped away tears from the back of
her hand and nodded repeatedly. "That son of a bitch! He's asking for it again..." Tie Niu roared, turned around, and rushed out the door.
"Tie Niu! Tie Niu..." His mother ran out after him, chasing after him and calling, "Talk to your brother-in-law...
talk it out! Don't fight! It's the New Year, it's bad luck..." Tie Niu's face was
ashen, and he quickly disappeared into the courtyard with a series of crunching snowflakes.
Tie Niu ran straight to the dilapidated temple at the village entrance. Every year at the end of the year, the village's gamblers would gather in this abandoned temple
, light bonfires, and play dominoes and dice for money. The temple door was blocked by a few long wooden planks. Tie Niu
kicked them a few times, and they all crashed down with a loud crash. The gamblers turned around and saw that his brother-in-law,
Fu Gui, was indeed inside. His sallow face turned deathly pale, and he stood there with his mouth agape, unable to move.
When the people around saw Tie Niu rushing in aggressively, they quickly got up to drag him away, saying,
"Brother Tie Niu! Brother Tie Niu!...Don't do anything reckless!"
"You son of a bitch! Get out of my way!" Tie Niu roared, swinging his fist, which was as big as a bowl, and
the crowd moved aside. He lunged towards the fire, grabbed his brother-in-law by the collar, and
lifted his skinny body off the ground.
The brother-in-law's feet left the ground, kicking wildly in mid-air, overturning the wooden card table onto the fire
, sending up puffs of embers and smoke. "What are you doing? What are you trying to do? I was just looking, I didn't
gamble..." he cried out in panic, sounding like a crowing rooster.
"I'm only asking you, why? You hit my sister!" Tie Niu roared, swinging his arm forcefully, sending his brother-in-law
crashing into the broken wall. He landed with a thud against the wall, scrambled to his feet, covered his head with his hands, and tried to run out the door
.
"Where do you think you're going?" Tie Niu yelled, lunging forward to
block his path, his strong body like a wall, his large hands gripping his arm tightly.
The brother-in-law was so frightened that his soul almost left his body. He stammered, "She...she's so long-winded...I couldn't stand it, so...
I tried to comfort her a few times, and she cried..."
"You son of a bitch! Is that how you comfort someone? And you made her cry?!" Tie Niu's voice was as heavy as a hammer
, making everyone around him tremble.
The brother-in-law hung his head, pleading in a soft voice, "Good brother! There are so many people here, at least give me some
face... Shall we talk outside?"
Tie Niu glanced at the people around him, snorted, dragged his brother-in-law to
the snow outside, shoved him against the broken wall and kicked him in the shin, making him cry out in pain and
try to squat down: "Don't kick me! Don't kick me! I'll tell you from the beginning..."
"Speak quickly! If you can't give a coherent explanation, you don't want to celebrate the New Year!" Tie Niu threatened in a loud voice,
spitting all over his brother-in-law's face.
"You know your brother-in-law is useless, he doesn't earn much money. If I didn't gamble, this family would have fallen apart long ago..."
The brother-in-law shook his head, blowing warm air on his frozen hands. "Gambling,
you know, there are always winners and losers..."
"Oh! You lost at gambling, so my sister became your punching bag?! What kind of logic is that?" Tie Niu roared
like thunder, his eyes wide as big as copper bells, his face contorted with anger.
"No! No! I didn't take it out on your sister... I wouldn't dare!" The brother-in-law quickly denied it,
afraid that Tie Niu wouldn't believe him and would get violent again, he quickly added, "I mean, it's related to me too!... A few
days ago, I lost a lot of money to Jin Gou, and lately I've been having bad luck, I can't pay it back..."
"Paying back debts is a man's business, it has nothing to do with my sister!" Tie Niu raised
his hand to slap him across the face.
The brother-in-law quickly crouched down to hide, muttering under his breath, "It's almost New Year's, and Jin Gou comes to our door every day demanding
money back. Your sister, seeing I can't pay, slept with Jin Gou..."
"What?!" Tie Niu's head buzzed. He lifted his brother-in-law off the ground, as if he weighed nothing
. "What did you say? My sister slept with Jin Gou? To pay your debts?" he shouted. This was utterly absurd; he couldn't
believe his sister would do such a despicable thing.
"Keep your voice down, don't disbelieve me! I saw it with my own eyes," the brother-in-law suddenly
said confidently, "That day... I came to gamble again, and I got back late, it was already dark. I saw a man open
the door and come out from afar, and... it was Jin Gou. He opened the door and then closed it again, and walked away like a mouse along the wall
..."
"That's just you being paranoid. He came to your house and did *that*? Even if it's to pay back the money?" Tie Niu still
didn't believe it. Jin Gou and he had been inseparable since childhood, and he would never dare to lay a hand on his sister.
"I didn't believe it either! I thought I was seeing things..." Seeing that Tie Niu's tone had weakened, the brother-in-law's speech became
much clearer. "I pushed the door open, and your sister was still getting dressed in the room. I pressed her down on the bed and touched her, and her vagina was still wet. I was
so angry that I beat her up, thinking that would scare her. But just now... when I was about to leave
, she said she was going to Jin Gou's house to borrow a basin for kneading dough..."
"Pah!" Tie Niu spat on the ground, interrupting his brother-in-law. He understood himself: his sister
had offered herself to Jin Gou! Enraged, he dragged his brother-in-law over and kicked him in the buttocks. His brother-in-law fell
face-first into the snow. He jumped over and kicked him twice more: "It's all because of your son-in-law's weakness! If you ever
dare to touch my sister again... I'll twist your arm off and feed it to the dogs!" he said angrily.
The brother-in-law, covered in snow and trembling,
scrambled out of the snow, watching his brother-in-law stride away. A few bolder men in the temple peeked out from over the wall and made sarcastic remarks:
"This world! A brother-in-law beating his sister-in-law, that's rare!" He was so ashamed he wished he could disappear into the ground.
Jin Gou was killing a dog in the front yard, and before he'd even plucked it all off, Tie Niu burst through the gate. He glanced at
the dead dog in Jin Gou's hand and grumbled, "On New Year's Day, are you going to eat your ancestors?!"
"Pigs need grain! I can't afford to feed them..." Jin Gou said with a bitter face, placing the dead dog
on the blood-stained stone slab, pointing and chuckling, "This dog eats shit! This is all I have!"
In the past, Tie Niu would have been grinning from ear to ear, but today he wasn't in the mood. He pulled out a handful of crumpled
bills and threw them on the ground, saying sternly, "Here you go!"
"What's this for, you dead ox..." Jin Gou's face flushed red and then paled, his expression turning grim. Seeing Tie Niu's
attitude, he knew the money was going to burn him, and he rubbed his hands together, too afraid to pick it up.
"Is that enough? That's all. My brother-in-law's debt to you is settled!" Tie Niu said stiffly, kicking
the scattered banknotes on the ground. The banknotes fluttered like leaves in the wind to Jin Gou's face.
Jin Gou's heart sank when he heard this. Before he could argue, Tie Niu had already left the yard. Jin Gou chased after
him, shouting, "Hey! Hey... what's the rush? It's gambling money, there's no need to rush..."
"Paying back debts is a matter of course! From today onwards, if you bully my sister again, I'll cut off your penis!"
Tie Niu turned around and coldly uttered.
"No! No!" Jin Gou shook his head, his heart already sinking. "We... grew up together
, if you bully your sister, I'll be the dead dog..." he said sheepishly, scratching his head.
Tie Niu didn't say anything more, turned away, gave a cold laugh, and walked away.
The heavens didn't stop the snowfall just because it was almost New Year's; it continued to pour down from the sky in a flurry, like countless
moths fluttering in the air. Tie Niu, his feet soaked with snow, stepped over the threshold. The whole family was crowding around the steaming stove
, tending to the fire. His older sister, Cai Feng, had long since stopped crying. Back inside, it was still cold; his toes ached from the cold. Tie Niu
shook off the snowflakes and squeezed into the crowd, hoping to soak up some warmth. But when his sister saw him beside her, she started
sobbing again. Tie Niu glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and snapped, "It's New Year's
...what are you crying for?! Still crying..."
His mother got up and lifted the pot lid. A wave of steam rushed out, engulfing Cai Feng's face, and the crying ceased
. As the smoke cleared, her sister's delicate face was revealed. Her eyes were still red and swollen, and
tear tracks crisscrossed her cheeks. Her beautiful hair was disheveled and draped over her shoulders, making her even more captivating than usual.
"It was just a fight over money, wasn't it? I've already paid it back to you!" Tie Niu muttered, moving closer
to the warm stove wall. The thought of his sister sleeping with Jin Gou conjured up
images of her pale body in his mind, and a wicked urge coursed through his blood. Soon, his manhood, like a frozen snake,
sprang to life, stretching and throbbing painfully in his crotch.
His mother, leaning over, cranked the ladle, the rising steam obscuring her vision, so she didn't see anything. Seeing the fire was about to go out, Cui Fen
ran outside to gather firewood, leaving only the two siblings at the stove door.
"Why did you give him the money? You don't need to give it to him, it's like throwing good money after bad..." The older sister was referring to Jin Gou, but when she looked down,
she saw a small tent sticking out of her younger brother's crotch, and her face flushed red to her ears.
"Paying back debts is a matter of course!" Tie Niu repeated, while pulling his knees together to cover the embarrassing
thing. "I heard from Brother Fugui that you're paying back his money..." He glanced at his mother and said in a low voice, but Cui Fen
came in from behind carrying firewood, so he stopped talking, since he didn't know what to say next.
"He's just spouting nonsense, all he knows is gambling..." The older sister stopped halfway through her sentence, leaning to the side
to let Cui Fen come in and add firewood.
Cuifen, her buttocks raised high, stuffed firewood into the stove. Caifeng, leaning back to accommodate her sister-in-law, kept her eyes
glued to Cuifen's buttocks, waist, and legs. The plump, alluring curves stretched taut beneath her thick cotton-padded coat stirred
a wave of jealousy within her. She thought sourly, "These buttocks! When she first married into the family, they were so tender and flat, look at them now,
all round! If my sister could marry my brother and become his wife, how could this
outsider named Cuifen have the chance to enjoy Tie Niu's good thing… I'm better than her in every way!"
Seemingly sensing something, Cuifen abruptly turned her head, giving her sister a fierce glare. Caifeng quickly turned her head away,
pretending to look elsewhere, but her eyes met her brother's. That gaze ignited her heart like a flame,
burning her with a frantic, chaotic feeling. She simply stood up. Her mother, thinking she was leaving, quickly said:
"How will you spend the New Year back home? You'll spend it here, and Tie Niu will take you back!" She hadn't planned to go back anyway. She stamped her feet and paced
around the kitchen, feeling cold, and unwilling to return to the stove to sulk with Cui Fen's red eyebrows and green eyes, so she left
the kitchen and went to her parents' room next door.
Tie Niu's heart had already gone with her; he stood up and stamped his feet. Every year at this time, his father would go to help other families slaughter pigs;
he had left early this morning. "When will my dad be back?" he asked absentmindedly, rubbing his hands to warm them.
"Slaughtering pigs means meat to eat, you old man, you glutton, it'll be a while before you get any!" his mother said disdainfully. She could
n't stand this kind of freeloading behavior; it was pathetic. Away from the fire, Tie Niu's teeth chattered from the cold. "It's so cold, I..."
"Go talk to my sister, try to comfort her..." he said, dashing out of the kitchen.
"You beast! You beast..." Cuifen's lips trembled with anger as she furiously
added firewood to the stove. Her mother-in-law, not hearing what she said, cursed above her, "You blind fool, burning so much firewood, trying to burn
me to death?!" Cuifen fell silent, tears welling in her eyes, which she struggled to hold back.
