Chapter Two: Going to the Doctor
At noon, as soon as Li Yun stepped out of the school gate, he saw his mother smiling and greeting him. Her bright
orange dress stood out against the gloomy weather.
"Mom, going to the hospital already? There might not be enough time at noon. We still need to eat lunch, and then there's the hospital registration and
waiting time," Li Yun said. He knew his mother was bound to take him to the hospital today, but he hadn't expected
her to come pick him up so early.
"I've already asked for leave from Teacher Xu. You can skip half a day of school this afternoon," his mother
said, winking mischievously. Li Yun looked at his mother and couldn't help but smile wryly.
He hadn't thought much of it when he was little, but in the last two years, he had come to realize the carefree and comical way his parents acted. On the contrary,
Li Yun himself, having studied so much, seemed somewhat prematurely mature.
His mother waved, and probably because of the eye-catching color of her clothes, a taxi immediately pulled up
. The mother opened the back door of the car, got in, and while moving further inside, called to Li Yun, "Hurry up and get
in. Although I took the afternoon off, it's better to be early than late. Let's have lunch first, then go to the hospital."
Li Yun got into the car, and as the taxi drove out of the street where the school was located, Li Yun saw what
appeared to be an ancient building on the right side of the street at the intersection. Suddenly remembering the Taoist priest of Pingshan, she couldn't help but ask the driver, "Sir,
what street is that over there? There seems to be an ancient building there?"
The driver turned his head to look in the direction Li Yun was pointing and replied, "Oh, that's there. That's Xiangyun Road
. You must be talking about Xiangyun Temple. I heard it's quite old. Was it built in the Ming Dynasty or sometime later? It's not
far from your school. How come you don't know it?"
"I just started junior high school, and I'm not familiar with the area around the school yet," Li Yun explained somewhat embarrassedly. Actually,
Li Yun had been in junior high school for over a semester, but after school, she would rush home with her head down, completely
oblivious to her surroundings, so she still hadn't figured out the neighborhood.
The taxi arrived outside the First Municipal Hospital, and her mother pulled Li Yun out. They
ate lunch at a small restaurant near the hospital before going inside to register.
Upon entering the hospital lobby, the sheer number of people astonished Li Yun, and her mother frowned as well.
However, the two weren't worried about wasting too much time, naturally because of her father's mention of her mother's "old classmate" the previous night—
Xu Tiejun, now the vice president of the First Municipal Hospital.
As usual, her mother led Li Yun to the vice president's office. The vice president's office was located
in a separate bungalow next to the hospital, surrounded by waist-high greenery.
Upon arriving at Vice President Xu's office, they found the door locked. Her mother knocked twice, but there was no response. Her mother
grew impatient. "Xiaoyun, you wait here. I'll go ask where your Uncle Jun is." With that,
she hurriedly left, leaving Li Yun to wait outside the office door. Because of her mother's departure, the office
was unusually quiet. Li Yun suddenly realized there were extremely faint sounds coming from inside. He pressed
his ear against the door and vaguely heard some sounds that were "strange" for someone his age…
"Hmm… Ah…"
The sounds made Li Yun feel a strange heat.
"Could Uncle Jun be here?" Li Yun suddenly realized what might be happening inside the office. Reading a lot
has a downside: precociousness. Many ancient Chinese literati were the "repressed" type. Their writings explicitly stated
principles, but upon closer reading, one could find many "personal agendas" hidden within. Li Yun hadn't quite understood this before, but after reading more,
he naturally understood some of it. Although he hadn't actually seen it, Li Yun finally
understood from the sounds coming from the room.
If this had happened to someone else, Li Yun might not have felt much of a reaction. However, the thought that it was
a close friend or relative who had watched him grow up doing this filled Li Yun with an unusual impulse.
Just as Li Yun was getting lost in the sounds, the sound of her mother's high heels came from inside, and Li Yun
snapped back to reality. "Uncle Jun is inside... but I'm eavesdropping by the door. What if Mom sees me?" Li Yun
didn't know what she was thinking... but seeing the green belt outside the office, she quickly slipped inside...
Her mother seemed a little annoyed. When she came to the office door, she didn't realize that Li Yun, who should have been waiting there,
was nowhere to be seen. She kicked the office door: "Xu Tiejun, what are you doing in there? Stop pretending
and come out."
Then, the sound of desks and chairs being overturned came from inside the office. Soon, a slender woman dressed as a nurse,
disheveled, pushed open the door, smiled awkwardly at her mother, and ran away. Her mother, however, remained calm
and watched the nurse leave in a "flustered" manner. Turning to look at Vice Dean Xu, who also wore an embarrassed yet obsequious smile,
she drawled in a mocking tone, "Dean, you're so busy..."
Vice Dean Xu glanced around somewhat anxiously, and after confirming that no one else was around, grabbed his mother's hand and pulled
her into the room.
"Let go, what are you doing?" His mother's tone was somewhat annoyed, but she was clearly not too resistant
.
"Juan, come inside and talk. It's not good if someone sees you like this at the office door." Xu Tiejun
quickly lowered his posture, sounding rather obsequious.
"Tch, if you're capable of doing it, why are you afraid of what others will say? You got scared like this over a nurse..." His mother seemed
to have softened her attitude towards Xu Tiejun.
Then Li Yun saw something he never expected... Seeing that no one was around, Xu Tiejun suddenly hugged
his mother and pressed his lips to her face. His mother did not resist at all, and their lips were sealed together. Li Yun
could clearly see the movement of their tongues inside their lips. After their French kiss, Xu Tiejun quickly pulled his mother into his office.
Li Yun was stunned. She had known this Uncle Jun since childhood, but she had never known that he and her mother
had such a relationship. Recalling her father's words from the previous night, Li Yun seemed to understand his implication,
and she was certain that her father knew about the ambiguous relationship between her mother and Uncle Jun… Thinking of this,
a fear she had never felt before welled up in Li Yun's heart. This fear drove her to flee the hospital. Her mind…
Li only wanted to tell his father what he had seen… or perhaps only his father could drive away his current fear…
Just as Li Yun ran away, his mother rushed out of the office in a panic. “By the way, where’s Xiaoyun?
Didn’t I just tell him to wait at the door?” “What? Xiaoyun came with you? That’s not right, there’s no
one else around.” Xu Tiejun looked utterly astonished…
