White Plum Blossom Fragrance (Author: Asphalt Road)

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
"You're finally back by my side... I missed you so much..." My mother said

, stroking my cheek, a weak smile forced across her pale, thin face. The morphine
had blurred her consciousness; she couldn't recognize me. For the past few days, she'd thought I was the person who had disappeared over a decade ago. And these were her last words, a hasty and brief end to her short thirty- three years of life... At my mother's funeral, I sat alone in the front row of the empty family section, listening blankly as the monk chanted sutras. My mother's portrait hung high in the center of the hall. In it, she still had her long, black hair, shaved off after , her eyes narrowed in a smile, her upturned lips revealing her small tiger teeth—a sweet , happy smile, one I had carefully chosen. I hoped that in heaven, my mother could continue smiling like this, no longer from the torment of illness. I didn't cry. To be honest, I've cried until I have no tears left to shed since my mother was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction. And the funeral home staff even said that if I keep crying, my mother won't be able to leave. So I can't cry … I can't cry… "Why are you spacing out?" A large, strong hand rested on my shoulder. I turned around and saw it was Uncle Ming. "Nothing… I was just thinking about something…" I replied weakly. Because of the funeral arrangements, I don't know how many meals I've missed or how many nights I've slept properly. "I know you're worried about the money, right? Don't worry! Uncle Ming and some friends will help you give your mother a proper send-off. Cheer up! Don't ruin your health, okay?" Uncle Ming sat beside putting his arm around my shoulder to encourage me. "Yes, thank you, Uncle…" I smiled and nodded. "Sigh, speaking of which, your grandfather is so heartless. It's just an unmarried child, is it really necessary to be angry for so long ? He didn't even visit your mother when she was most seriously ill, and now that she's gone, he doesn't even come to see you... Sigh, so heartless~ so heartless~" Uncle Ming lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, and then exhaled a long, thick cloud of white smoke. "Don't say that, actually, Grandpa is also very sad. And Grandma called me the other day and said that we could leave the funeral expenses to them... Although he didn't say it, he has already forgiven Mom ..." I stared blankly at my mother's portrait with Uncle Ming, and reached out to ask him for a cigarette. "Kid~ you're only 15 years old! Why are you learning to smoke from others?" Uncle Ming laughed and ruffled my hair , but in the end, he still gave me one. "What does it matter, anyway... anyway, no one will care about me anymore..." For some reason, I thought I wouldn't be able to cry, but when I said this, tears started streaming down my face. "Okay, okay~ It's alright, it's alright~ Uncle Ming is here! It's alright!" Uncle Ming hugged me tightly, patting my back gently to comfort me. "Let me tell you something embarrassing to make you laugh." Seeing that I had calmed down a bit, Uncle Ming continued. "See that short guy over there and that bald guy next to him? Back then, the three of us were considered the village's little rascals . But... actually, we weren't that bad. We weren't good at studying, but we couldn't do anything too serious either. We just didn't like going to school, and we'd occasionally grope the girls. "And your mom, she was a good student and the prettiest girl in our village. Every boy in school —including the three of us, of course—liked her. But, you know how boys are, they always like to play pranks on the girls they like, so the three of us were no exception. We'd either lift up her skirt on the way to and from school or throw cockroaches and rats at her, which would always scare her so much she'd scream, hahaha ." Seeing me roll my eyes at him, as if to say he was childish, Uncle Ming continued, "There's no other way. Back then, boys weren't used to expressing their feelings directly, so they had to use pranks to interact with the girls they liked." "So... Uncle, you really like my mom?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. No wonder Uncle Ming has always taken such good care of my mother and me since I can remember . No matter the matter, big or small, Uncle Ming has never frowned or said no . He even helped raise money for my mother's chemotherapy. His meticulous care and gentle consideration made me wonder for a while: why doesn't Mom just get together with Uncle Ming? After all, one of them is unmarried, and the other is unmarried. "Heh, it's too late now, she can only keep it in her heart. And your mother... she's always only had your father in her heart. It's really enviable, isn't it? He just suddenly appeared, stole our goddess, and then suddenly disappeared..." Uncle Ming sighed, then lit another cigarette. "My father...? Mom has never told me anything about him..." Because of this, my mother and grandfather still have unresolved issues, so I've never asked my mother about my father. I always thought maybe one day when she's ready, she'll tell me? "Yeah, speaking of which, you really do look like your dad. They're practically identical ..." Uncle Ming exhaled a puff of smoke, touching my face as he spoke. "Yeah, everyone says I look like him, but I don't even have a single picture of him..." Suddenly , I felt so sorry for my dad. How could he bear to abandon my mom and me like that, disappearing without a trace for over a decade? But honestly, I don't hate him. After all, I've never even met him, and I feel . I just hope that Dad... could at least come and offer incense for my mom. "Sigh, what's wrong with me? I just said I was going to make you laugh, and now I've made the atmosphere awkward again." Uncle Ming scratched his head and said, then hastily extinguished his cigarette before continuing, "Why don't you move in with me after the funeral? Anyway... I don't have a wife or kids, so... sigh! How about you become my godson?" Uncle Ming was unusually shy, his eyes shifting awkwardly back and forth.

A blush even appeared on his dark face.

"Hmm, I'll think about it." Knowing Uncle Ming's intention, I smiled half-jokingly.

"Tch~ You little rascal, I'm going to swallow my pride and take you as my godson! Even though I don't earn much money,
you should at least give me some face, right? What's wrong with saying yes?" As Uncle Ming spoke, his warm
hands ruffled my hair again.

"Hehe, I was just kidding, Godfather, is that alright? Please guide me in the future." I said
, then gave Uncle Ming a hug. This was probably the first time I had smiled so happily since my mother was diagnosed with cancer.
If it weren't for Uncle Ming, I really don't know if I could have endured all of this...

After everything was settled, I took my mother's ashes back to my maternal grandfather's house. Although my grandfather was still
as stubborn as ever, saying that he didn't have a daughter who would mess around with other men, his red and swollen eyes
clearly showed that he had been crying for several days, and even his originally dark and strong body seemed to have shrunk
considerably. In the end, I think he still couldn't bear to part with my mother.

Finally, my grandmother accepted my mother's ashes, and I took the opportunity to tell her that I would live with Uncle Ming and become
his godson.

"Ming-zai is a good boy...it's alright, Grandpa and Grandma are getting old and can't take care of you anymore,
and you won't have a good future staying in this poor, remote place." My grandmother, her eyes red, stroked my
head and continued, "They took such good care of you, you must be obedient and
study hard to repay them, okay?" After my mother's passing, she seemed to have suffered a lot;
her cheeks were sunken, and her once gray hair had turned snow-white.

"I know, Grandma, you and Grandpa must take good care of yourselves~ I'll come back
to see you whenever I have time." Holding my grandmother's hand tightly, I wanted her to rest assured.

Before leaving, I remembered to say goodbye to my grandfather, even though he never spoke to me. Grandma said it was
because I look exactly like Dad, which always reminded him of him. Of course, I also knew that over the years
, Grandpa had long since gotten used to ignoring me.

"I'm off then, Grandma."

To catch the bus, which only runs three times a day, I waved goodbye to Grandma without waiting long and
hurried to the bus stop.

"Boom... boom..."

Thunder rumbled in the distance, the gray sky and the humid, sultry air creating a
suffocating feeling.

'Oh no... it looks like it's going to rain soon.' I thought, quickening my pace and jogging towards
my destination. Suddenly—

BOOM!

A deafening clap of thunder rang out, and in the blink of an eye, a streak of blue light
struck just three steps away from me, instantly creating a hole the size of a basketball in the dark asphalt road.

'Namo Amitabha... thankfully, my ancestors protected me...'

Looking at the still-smoking hole, I patted my chest, secretly relieved that the lightning hadn't struck me
. Just as I was wondering if I should go back to my grandparents' house for refuge, another bolt of lightning struck.

Boom!

At first, I could feel the hairs on my body standing on end.
Then , less than half a heartbeat later, a blinding white light, accompanied by a deafening roar
, mercilessly struck my head, piercing through my body like a giant spear. After a agonizing
descent from my head to my toes, the spear split into hundreds, even thousands, of tiny snakes that
writhed , seemingly trying to break free from its cage. Finally, countless blue-green electric snakes, emitting
annoying hissing noises, shot out from my eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.

'Tens of thousands of volts, no doubt about it,' I wondered why I still had the leisure
to think that . Maybe I knew I was doomed? I simply quietly admired the dazzlingly beautiful
blue light before me, savoring the fleeting moments of my life from birth to the present. After all, not everyone has the chance
to have such an experience in their lifetime. However, I'm a little disappointed that I should have eaten at my
grandparents' ; the smell of burning flesh is actually making me a little hungry now…

"You're finally back with me… I missed you so much…"

In the deep darkness, as if coming from a very distant place, I heard a
faint yet very familiar voice.

"Mom…?" I tried calling out twice in the direction of the voice, but there was no response; only my
hollow voice echoed in the pitch-black darkness.

"If you're there, say something! Mom! Can you hear me? Mom—!!!" I ran forward a couple of steps
before collapsing to my knees, crying and screaming uncontrollably. "Don't leave me alone again… Can you hear me? Don't
leave me alone again… Mom—!!!"

Then, in the next instant, the world suddenly lit up again.

Like a movie scene change, the sky, which had just been so gloomy it was almost suffocating, suddenly became
clear , the sun so high it was dazzling.

'Was it a dream...? Was I just struck by lightning?' The intense ringing in my ears and near-blindness
told me that what had just happened wasn't entirely untrue. My head was still a little fuzzy as I sorted through my memories, and in
the next second , a patch of sky above me suddenly darkened.

"...Something... happened, right?... Are you alright?"

A figure, backlit and head bowed, seemed to be saying something to me. However, the booming sound in my ears
made it impossible to hear what the other person was saying. I could only keep frowning and muttering, "Huh? Huh?"

"I said~ sir! Are you... alright?" It was a girl speaking. Seeing that I couldn't hear her clearly, she
cupped her hands in front of her mouth and shouted.

"Um... oh, I'm fine... I just can't stand up very well..." I tried to get up, but I couldn't
muster the strength, and after a few attempts, I simply lay back down on the ground. It was only then that I realized I was completely unharmed
. I wondered if I was incredibly lucky, surviving such a close call without even a scratch? Looks like I'll have to go
buy a lottery ticket later.

"Oh, it's good that you're alright. I saw you lying on the ground crying and I was worried something was wrong."
The girl 's voice was as soft and clear as a silver bell. I felt like I'd heard that voice somewhere before.

"Crying? Were you?" I wiped my face with my hand, and sure enough, it was wet. Was it because
I heard my mother's voice in the dark?

"Should I call an ambulance for you? Or do you want to stay in bed?" she asked.

"Oh, no need, I think I just need to rest for a bit, it's okay..." Perhaps my eyes were
adjusting , I was slowly starting to see some things. But the first thing I saw was a pair of white
underwear with small floral patterns.

"Aaaaah! Pervert!!!" Realizing I was looking up her skirt, the girl screamed and
pressed her hands down on her skirt, then raised her foot and stomped directly at my face.

Everything happened so fast and suddenly, and honestly, I didn't have the strength to dodge. I could only resign myself
to having this girl, who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, step on my face...

"Ah! I'm sorry! I just happened to..." Seeing that I didn't dodge, the girl was startled and
quickly squatted down to check my injury.

"N-nothing... I was wrong too..." I said, touching my nose. Fortunately,
apart from the blood flowing from my nose like a broken faucet, my nose bridge didn't seem to be broken.

"Here~ take this to wipe." The girl handed me a pack of tissues, and it was only then that I could see her face clearly.
A neat bob haircut and big eyes, her dark brown pupils staring at me intently. Her skin seemed to have
never been exposed to the sun; it was very fair, and her slightly chubby cheeks gave her a girl-next-door feel.

"I haven't seen you before? Are you from out of town?" the girl asked. Seeing that I was alright, she smiled, revealing her
little tiger teeth.

"I guess so? I'm back to visit my grandparents. I usually live in Taipei." I
answered her while stuffing tissues into my nostrils.

"Taipei!? Wow! You're from Taipei? Is Taipei crowded? Are there lots of tall buildings? Are there
lots of department stores?" Hearing that I was from Taipei, the girl seemed a little surprised and started rattling
off a bunch of questions, pulling my hand up and down.

"What's wrong with you? Is it so rare to be from Taipei?" My head was still a little dizzy, and her pulling made me
even more lightheaded, so I shook off her hand and said somewhat unhappily.

"Why are you angry... I've never been to Taipei before, can't I even ask..." The girl also
seemed a little angry because of my attitude, her face turning red and her lips pouting, as if to say: Fine, I won't ask.

"Oh... okay, I didn't know you'd never been, but why?" I asked.

"What? Why?"

"Why haven't you been to Taipei? It's not like there aren't any buses.
It should right?"

"Huh? A bus stop? Where's a bus stop here?" The girl asked me in confusion, looking at me like I was
crazy.

"What do you mean there isn't? It's right over there...? Eh--!?" I raised my hand and gestured in
the direction in front of me, but the bus stop, which should have been fifty meters away, was now
completely .

"I told you~ If we want to go out from here, we either ride a bike, drive a car
, or walk. Where would we find a bus? Are you kidding me?" The girl giggled and poked my
head .

"How could this be!? It was just here a moment ago!" I was still wondering if I had misremembered the location, turning my head
back and forth to check the surrounding scenery. Although everything was exactly as I remembered, the bus stop
had inexplicably vanished into thin air. And it was then that I realized something was wrong with the ground beneath my feet.

"A... a gravel road???" I muttered to myself, kicking my feet haphazardly, but the crunching sound of
the stones and the sensation beneath my bottom told me I was sitting on it.

"How could this be? How could this be?" Ignoring the still-dizzy feeling, I hurriedly stood up, trying to confirm
the reality, repeatedly muttering the same phrase. As I stomped back and forth, the gravel crunched incessantly. "Are... are you alright?" The girl stood up as well, asking with some concern. Her tone left me wondering if she was referring to my body or my head. "I... I don't know..." The sudden suddenness of standing up was disorienting. I bent slightly , hands on my knees, frowning as I pondered everything. Everything had become strange ever since I was struck by lightning ... Lightning!? "Oh right! I know! You must be from the TV station, haha! Hahaha, I knew it! How could someone be struck by lightning and emerge unscathed? This must be some kind of prank show, right? Where's the camera? The host must be Wu Zongxian, right? But you guys are really generous, paving gravel in such a short time? That's so cool!" I clapped and nodded confidently. Now everything made sense. But, it was just a prank, was it really necessary to step on my nose like that? "Wait, wait, what are you talking about all of a sudden? Wu Zongxian? Has he come here ?" The girl turned her head left and right, seemingly looking for the camera as well. "Okay, okay~ it's not convincing anymore. I know, hurry up and call the cameraman out." I patted the dust off my butt, a little worried about whether I could wash it off when I got back. "...You're crazy!" Seeing me rambling on and on, the girl frowned, cursed, and turned to leave. "Tch, why are you swearing...Hey! Don't go! Are you done filming now? I want to go home . Hey--!" I thought that usually, if they played this much, they would close the road, right? If they didn't call "cut," would I be unable to catch the bus to get out? So I hurriedly followed. "Hey, okay, I don't want to play anymore, I want to go home, please call the cameraman out." I said, pulling on the girl's shoulder. "You...! What's wrong with you? I haven't understood a single word you've said since then, nobody's been here."

"Want to play with you? Please let go of my hand, I want to go home!" The girl shrugged unhappily and
ran off with a sour face.

"What's going on... tsk!" With my hands on my hips, I was suddenly confused by her antics. I scratched my
head and looked back at where the bus stop should have been.

"Sigh, never mind, I'll just go back to Grandma's and ask her to call a taxi for me." I wasn't sure if
any buses would come after all this, so I decided to go back to Grandpa and Grandma's first. I could also ask them
if they knew that a TV company was coming to film a prank show.

But when I got back to Grandpa and Grandma's house, something strange happened again.

"Was this...clean before?" I tilted my head and looked at the outer wall of Grandpa's house as I walked.
It should have been covered with golden pothos, but now it was completely clean, with only the gray cement
brick wall still in place. For a moment, I wondered if I had gone to the wrong house, and I checked back and forth two or three times.
However, the two plum trees in front of the door and the bright red roof were the most recognizable features in the whole village. Although I felt a little
strange , I still pressed the doorbell.

"Coming!" A familiar, clear voice answered from inside.

"It's you again!?" The girl who opened the door was the same one from before.
She frowned with disgust when she saw me.

"I-I should be asking you! This is my grandparents' house. What are you doing here?" I
was confused and retorted unhappily. The two of us started arguing at the door.

"What's wrong? Who is it?" A middle-aged woman came out of the house after hearing our argument
. I should have looked away, because what I saw almost scared me to death.

"Grand-Grand-Grandma...?" I stammered, unable to speak
, my mouth agape. I pointed at her as if I had seen a ghost and couldn't lower my finger for a long time. After all, the woman before me was completely different from the pale-skinned, thin-cheeked, white-haired grandmother I
knew . Aside from her thinner skin and
fuller cheeks, her long hair, piled high on her head, was even blacker than ink!

Even so, I was absolutely certain they were the same person!

"Hey! Didn't anyone teach you not to keep pointing at each other with your hand? That's rude!" The girl
angrily slapped my hand away, glaring at me fiercely.

"What's wrong? I heard you two arguing at the door from inside. What happened?"
Grandma asked gently, trying to calm the girl down.

"Who knows what this lunatic is up to? I was thinking of checking on him after he collapsed on the street, to see if he was
alright and if he needed help, but as soon as he got up, he started rambling incoherently, saying I was from a TV station
and was making a prank show to fool him." The girl complained angrily to Grandma.

"Child, are you from out of town? I don't think I've seen you around here. Where are your parents?" Grandma asked softly,
stroking my head.

"I...I..." It was all so sudden; I had no idea what was happening.
I stared at her, bewildered, speechless for a long time. Then a familiar voice came from behind me.

"Who is it?" All three of us looked towards the wall behind us. Another person who almost made me
wet myself . Grandpa???

Like Grandma, Grandpa, carrying a hoe, had suddenly become incredibly young.
Without his straw hat, not only was he not bald, but his hair was shockingly thick, and his dark skin was full of muscle—completely different from the thin figure I
remembered . Perhaps seeing me, a stranger, his already pale face
furrowed, and he stared at me with eyes wide open, looking like a ghost.

"Dad~ You heard me—" The girl put on her slippers and ran to Grandpa's side, repeating what she had just said to
Grandma . Wait! What did she just call Grandpa?

'Then she, she, she...she's Mom...?' Suddenly, my legs went weak, and I collapsed to
the ground, my eyes wide with disbelief. "No wonder I felt like I'd heard her voice somewhere before
! No wonder her smile seemed so familiar!" Her current appearance
was so different from my mother's, who had been ravaged by illness before her death, that I hadn't recognized her immediately.

But at the same time, it all made sense. I'd seen similar scenarios in movies and novels before. Could it be that
I'd traveled through time because of a lightning strike?

"Are you alright? Why did you suddenly fall?" Grandma asked, bending over, her voice still
gentle . Then she reached out to help me up.

"Hey! Kid, where did you come from? Why are you bothering my daughter?" After hearing my mother's words, Grandpa
looked at me fiercely.

"Um… I… uh…" How could I convince Grandpa that I was his future grandson? I
stammered for a long time, unable to speak, because even I couldn't believe such an absurd thing. Even though it
had indeed happened.

"What are you mumbling for? If you're a boy, answer me straight!" Under my grandfather's
loud reprimand, for some reason, I was so frightened that I immediately straightened up, my hands pressed against my legs, not daring to move.

"Oh dear~ why are you being so fierce? He's just a child, can't you ask him properly?" My grandmother
frowned and glared at my grandfather, then put her arm around my shoulder and said, "Don't be afraid, speak properly."

"I... um... I'm sorry, I... I think I made a mistake, sorry... I have to go home
..." After bowing deeply to my grandparents, I took off running outside...

'My God... this joke has gone too far...'

As I walked towards the "bus stop," it was already dusk, the sun was setting, the clouds in the sky were tinged with
red, and the stars gradually peeked out, faintly shining, like a large, jewel-
studded ribbon hanging high in the sky. However, I wasn't in the mood to appreciate the beautiful scenery; my mind was filled with
questions: What should I do now? Do I have anywhere to go back to? Can I even get back?

Suddenly, I heard the sound of rubble cracking behind me.

"Hey...you, from Taipei...my mom wants me to call you back..." It was my mother, who seemed a little
embarrassed , avoiding eye contact as she spoke.

"Me? Why?" I was confused.

"How should I know!? Anyway, just come with me!" Ignoring my bewildered look,
Mom grabbed my hand and pulled me back.

"Um... this afternoon I think I inexplicably talked to you about a lot of random things... I'm sorry
... I didn't mean to." On the way back to my grandparents' house, I said to Mom with some guilt.

"Oh~ that, never mind, I stepped on your foot anyway, let's call it even, haha. But~
are all Taipei people like you?" Mom frowned and made a strange expression as she looked me over.

"Pfft! Don't worry, maybe only I am like this?" Yes, I'm probably the only one who can suddenly travel through time,
right? I answered with a wry smile.

"How old are you? How come you came all the way from Taipei to a rural place like ours alone?" Mom
asked with her silvery voice and her signature little tiger teeth.

"Me? Fifteen years old. And didn't I say this afternoon that I came to see my grandparents..." I didn't mention that I was also
bringing her ashes back.

"Huh? You're two years younger than me!? You look so..." Mom seemed incredulous
, looking me up and down again.

"Heh~ You old hag, huh? Probably because you've never had a father and Mom just passed away recently, right
? When everything falls on your shoulders, I think you'll become as old as me." I
said, resting my head on my hands as we walked.

"Ah... I'm sorry... I think I asked something I shouldn't have..." Mom said guiltily,
patting my shoulder to cheer me up.

"It's okay~ I'm used to it." I smiled at her.

"You're so strong... I wouldn't know what to do if it were me."

"There's nothing I can do, sometimes that's just how it is~" I spread my hands to my sides, making a helpless
expression. And at this moment, we returned to Grandpa's house.

"Why did you suddenly run off like that? It's already so late, you could leave tomorrow, right?
Are you hungry? Go wash your hands first. Xiang, come help me take these dishes to the front." Mom led me
to Grandma's side. I saw her busy stirring the wok in front of her, and then glancing at the
bubbling radish and meatball soup beside her.

"What are you daydreaming about? Help!" Mom, carrying plates in both hands, nudged me with her elbow.
I snapped out of my reverie and helped carry the cooked food to the front of the room.

By the time all the food was in place, it was completely dark outside. I
sat awkwardly in front of Grandpa and Grandma like a shy bride, my eyes darting around, unsure where to look.

"Hey, eat up! Don't be shy." Grandpa spoke first. Just as I remembered, he
poured himself a glass of wine and then started eating the overflowing bowl of white rice in front of him.

"Well... I'll start eating..." After carefully placing a few dishes into my bowl, I
ate silently without saying a word. In fact, no one spoke after that; only the clinking of bowls and chopsticks echoed empty
around us. The awkward atmosphere felt like it was freezing the air in the front hall, making me feel
like I was sitting on pins and needles.

"I heard you're from Taipei?" After a long silence, my grandfather, who had finished eating first, broke the silence, picking his teeth
as he asked.

"Yes," I replied, straightening my back as I placed my bowl and chopsticks on the table.

"Heh... just you alone? What are you doing here?" My grandfather chuckled dryly, seemingly interested,
before continuing.

"He said he's coming to see Grandpa and Grandma," my mother quickly answered for me, smiling at me.

"Did I ask you?" Grandpa glared at Mom, then turned back and continued, "
What's your name?"

"I...I'm called Bai...Bai Shuang..." I answered, head down, too scared to look Grandpa in the eye.
I felt his gaze was so sharp it might shoot out laser beams and burn me to death.

"Pfft! Sounds like a girl's name, Bai Shuang? Isn't that a bit too dreamy? Hahahaha!"
Mom chuckled when she heard my name.

"What a coincidence? You're also surnamed Bai? What about your grandparents? What are their names?" Grandpa glared at Mom and
impatiently continued.

"..." I lowered my head, speechless. After all...I couldn't just tell him that my grandpa was you,
could I? If he thought I was teasing him, he'd probably try to kill me!

"Alright, alright! It's not like the police are interrogating you. Why are you being so aggressive?" Grandma jumped in
to help me out, scolding Grandpa a few times.

"Hmph! How would I know if he's a thief? Besides, I only asked him a couple of questions.
Why are you so quick to jump in and defend him? Are you that close to him?" Grandpa, unable to contain his temper,
retorted angrily to Grandma.

"I'm so sorry! I lied! Actually, I'm homeless because I have nowhere to stay, and I collapsed on the road this
afternoon because I was so hungry. I know it's shameless, but could
you please take me in for a while? I'll do anything!" Seeing that Grandpa and Grandma were about to start arguing, I
quickly knelt down and told a little lie. But it was true that I had nowhere to go back.

"How can that be! Where are your parents? Oh, right, you haven't contacted them yet. Should you call
home to let them know you're safe?" Grandma said anxiously.

"I... I don't have a father, and my mother... she passed away recently..." As I spoke,
tears welled up in my eyes. Grandma felt sorry for me, and her soft heart also reddened.

"Hmph~ I don't know if you're telling the truth or not... Besides, why should
I take you in when we're not related?" Grandpa said dismissively, arms crossed.

"It's already pitiful enough that he doesn't have parents, would it kill you to shut up? Come on, stand up
first ." Grandma rolled her eyes and pushed Grandpa, then reached out and pulled me up, saying, "Okay, I believe
you. But, if you want to live with us, you'll have to help with the fields, understand?" As I stood up
, Grandma reached out and brushed the mud off my pants.

"Hmph! I'm curious what kind of help you skinny monkey can be. Let me make this clear first, I hate
Taipei people—you better not let me find out anything is missing from my house, otherwise I'll definitely..."
"You mean, did you understand?!" Grandpa's words made me nod my head vigorously, barely daring to breathe.
Then he turned and went into his room to rest.

"Don't worry about it, he's always as stubborn and impulsive as an ox. I think you must be tired too, right?
Go take a bath once the water's boiled, and you can sleep in the inner room tonight." Grandma said gently, pointing
towards the back of the room with her finger, then brought out a few of Grandpa's clothes for me to change into.

"I'm sorry... I suddenly made such a strange request, causing you and Uncle trouble..." I said apologetically
, touching my head .

"It's alright, there are only three of us in our family, so one more person won't make a big difference.
Besides , what I'm curious about is... even though we only met for the first time today, I feel like you're not a stranger
, but rather like a familiar relative's child. Am I weird? Hehehe." Grandma
stared intently at my face, then laughed awkwardly.

"Because I'm your future grandson." "I thought, and then I chuckled to myself...

"Oh, not bad. I was thinking of kicking you out of bed later, but I didn't expect you, this
little brat from Taipei, to be up so early."

The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, my grandfather saw me and my grandmother preparing breakfast together. He seemed a little
surprised , but also a little disappointed, as if he couldn't find anything wrong with me.

"Sister Meixiang, get up." Following my grandmother's instructions, I went to my mother's door to wake her up. Since no
one answered, I assumed she was still asleep, so I simply lifted the curtain and went in.

To my surprise, my mother was already up. She was facing away from me, almost naked
except for a white pair of underwear, humming a song as she was about to put on a skirt. Seeing a Walkman on the bed with
a long headphone cord connected to her ears, I guessed that was why she hadn't heard me.

Afraid of causing a commotion, I tiptoed out as quickly as possible. But by sheer coincidence, Mom
turned around at that moment.

The atmosphere seemed to freeze instantly in the small space. Mom's hand was still on the zipper of her skirt
, her small, firm breasts exposed between us without any cover. We stared at each other,
the atmosphere so awkward we couldn't speak.

"Get out..." To my surprise, Mom didn't scream. Instead, she lowered her voice and
coldly uttered those two words.

"Um... I did make a sound... but you didn't hear me..." I tried to explain, quickly turning my head
away.

"I told you to get out!!!" Mom then remembered to cover her chest and screamed
.

"Sorry—!" I quickly left her room. 'Oh my god, how could
something like this happen in a smut manga or novel?' I banged my head in frustration.

"What's wrong? I think I heard Xiang screaming?" Grandma asked, bringing the food to the table.

"Um...yes...I..." How to tell Grandma without making her angry that I accidentally
saw Mom changing clothes was giving me a real headache. Thankfully, it seemed only Grandma noticed.
If Grandpa found out, I wondered if he'd kick me out?

"Ah~ I know, you must have seen her changing, right? I told her not to listen to her Walkman while
changing she never listens!" Grandma said with a wry smile, it sounded like someone
had accidentally wandered in while Mom was changing before. But Grandma, the situation might be a little different from what you think...

Mom, dressed in her uniform, pouted angrily and went to the front hall, sat down at the table, ladled herself a bowl of plain porridge
, and then, as if in a rush, ate only a few bites quickly, without even saying goodbye, hurriedly
leaving for school.

"Don't worry~ she'll forget when she gets back. Eat up, you have a lot to do later." Grandma smiled wryly
, then, as if afraid I hadn't eaten enough, piled a lot of food into my bowl.

After breakfast, a series of busy farm activities began. But being only a junior high school student, I
was clumsy and awkward at many of the strenuous tasks. Several times, I almost
hit my own foot with the hoe, a scene that terrified my grandmother watching from the side.

"Hmph~ I knew it! You said you'd help, but someone like you, a chicken from Taipei, is just making things worse
!" My grandfather's words were as sharp as ever.

"What if you said less? There's a first time for everything. Is anyone born to be a farmer
?" My grandmother jumped in to my rescue, carefully checking if I was hurt. "I think it's almost noon. Why don't you
take my lunch to Xiang later? We can do the work here." My grandmother held the lunch she had prepared that
morning , carefully gesturing in the air towards the school.

Because of the almost complete breakdown in relations between my grandfather and mother, I actually didn't come back here many times. However,
whenever time allowed, my mother would occasionally sneak me back to visit our
hometown and my grandmother when my grandfather wasn't home. So even if my grandmother didn't tell me how to get there, I generally knew the way
. Plus, being temporarily free from my grandfather's constant bossing me around made me quite happy.
I whistled hummed a song as I strolled slowly towards school with

the lunchbox I was going to give my mother. I arrived at school just as the bell rang for the end of class, and I joined a group of older women at the school gate, waiting for their relatives to come and collect their
lunchboxes . Since I looked like I should also be in class, I inevitably attracted some attention.

"Sister Meixiang~ over here~" I waved and shouted to my mother as she walked towards the gate.

"Don't call me 'sister'! It's embarrassing! Just call me Meixiang from now on!"
My mother seemed a little displeased to see that I was the one bringing her the lunchbox.

"But you're two years older than me," I said. But actually, it was because I
felt very uncomfortable calling my mother by her name directly, not to mention that she was now almost my age.

"I don't care! You're not allowed to call me 'Sister Meixiang' anymore, understand?" My mother, having taken the lunchbox
, pointed her finger at my nose and said sternly.

"...Okay, okay," I replied helplessly, pouting.

"Sister Meixiang~" A boy's voice came from behind my mother. Although I couldn't see the person, I recognized the voice...
I knew who it was as soon as I heard it, and I was surprised that his voice hadn't changed at all.

A boy with a buzz cut suddenly popped out from behind my mother's shoulder. He had thick eyebrows, big eyes, and
a high ; he could be considered handsome, but unfortunately, his face was covered in acne, making him look
like a toad. 'So this is what Uncle Ming used to look like?' I thought to myself, chuckling to myself.

'Shi Jianming! You're so annoying!' My mother was so angry that she wanted to throw the lunchbox at him, but Uncle Ming, who was quicker,
narrowly dodged the attack.

'Can't hit me~ le~ le~ le~ how about that~' Uncle Ming playfully put his hands on either side of his forehead,
sticking out his tongue and making a face at my mother.

'So childish…' My mother and I said the same thing in unison, and I was also surprised
to find that we even had the same expression: frowning and rolling our eyes, looking helplessly at
Uncle Ming, who looked even more like a brat than me. 'No wonder they're mother and son…' I thought.

"Sister Meixiang~ Who's he?" Uncle Ming, who had also received his lunchbox, glanced at me and then asked
my mother with a grin.

"Mind your own business! Go away!" My mother seemed a little annoyed with Uncle Ming; otherwise, she would
n't speak to people in that tone. She then turned and quickly walked into the school.

"Don't be so heartless~ Sister Meixiang~" Uncle Ming also quickly followed, like a goldfish dropping
, following behind my mother and calling out "Sister Meixiang, Sister Meixiang" incessantly.

'This person will actually be my godfather in the future...' I couldn't help but shake my head with some worry.

Afterwards, I returned to my grandfather's field and continued my morning work after lunch. Of course
, my hoe-wielding skills were still as clumsy as ever: I couldn't lift it high enough, and I didn't turn the soil deep enough. However, my grandfather seemed
too lazy to say anything more, probably thinking that constantly scolding was just a waste of energy? I didn't hear his grumbling again until the sun went down and
I got home .

That evening, after dinner and a shower, I sat alone by the front door, hugging my knees, gazing at the starry
night sky. Unlike the sparse stars in the city, which never inspire a desire to look up
, here, without light pollution, the dark blue sky was so bright it didn't seem like night at all. Each star was like a dazzling,
large, sparkling diamond, so bright it made my eyes dazzled. I even thought I could
pluck a star from the sky if I just raised my hand!

As I enjoyed the cool night breeze accompanied by the croaking of frogs and chirping of insects, a sudden rustling sound caught
my attention.

The sound was coming from outside the house's wall. I could tell the person was being very careful, deliberately trying to be as quiet
as possible, but no matter how careful they were, they kept making noises on the gravel. And it
seemed like there was more than one person making the noise, because besides the rustling footsteps, I also heard
faint conversations coming from outside the wall all the way to the back of the house.

'A thief!?' The thought flashed through my mind. Thinking that if I could catch the thief
, I wondered if Grandpa would change his opinion of me. So I decided not to alert him and
carefully to the back of the house.

"Hey, hey! The light's on! Someone's inside!" From afar, I saw three heads hanging
on the wall, peering inside. Although I couldn't see their faces clearly, the voices sounded like young people.

"I wonder if it's Meixiang? Or her mom would be fine too. Have you guys noticed? Her
mom's breasts are pretty big, hehehe." Another head laughed as it spoke, then realized
it was laughing too loudly and quickly covered its mouth. "Please, please, it's not his dad.
I don't want to have nightmares tonight." It continued.

"Now? Who's going to open the window wider?" the last voice asked.

"Rock-paper-scissors!" the three said in unison.

Taking advantage of this moment, I carefully hid in the shadows and slowly approached the wall, squinting as
I used the dim light to make out the three men's faces.

'I knew it…' Actually, I had a pretty good idea of who it was when I heard the second voice, but I didn't
expect it to really be him—Uncle Ming. Although he looked a little different, the other two must be
the short man and bald man Uncle Ming showed me at my mother's funeral.

Uncle Ming and the others didn't seem to have noticed my presence yet, and the three of them kept
playing . Just as I was about to speak up to stop them, the window slammed open from the inside.

"We've been discovered! Get out of here!" Seeing that their plan had been exposed, Uncle Ming and the other two nimbly fled over the wall
, leaving me standing there dumbfounded.

"Shi Jianming! I know it's you! You're dead at school tomorrow! Do you hear me?!" My mother shouted, sticking her head
out. Noticing me standing there, she turned around and coldly said, "Were you here to peep at me while I
shower too?"

"N-no, I... I heard their voices and that's why I came! And
you opened the window before I could even speak up to stop them! Really!" I explained nervously, gesturing wildly.

"Really...?" Mom squinted, frowned, and asked suspiciously.

"Really, really! I swear!" I raised my right middle three fingers.

"...I'll believe you this once. You better not let me catch you again, hmph!" Mom
retreated and slammed the window shut.

'Damn it... what bad luck I'm having today...' I sulked and walked back to the front hall, feeling
utterly bewildered by the whole day, being mistaken for a perverted peeping tom twice in a row by Mom. '
What a kind gesture! Next time I won't stop them! Humph!' I thought.

The next morning, Grandma, busy preparing breakfast, asked me to wake Mom as usual. Afraid of
being misunderstood again, I was smarter this time and obediently stood outside the curtain and called out.

"I heard you!" Mom responded from inside. Perhaps because she had just woken up, her tone sounded
a little impatient.

"You should learn from Bai Shuang! You're already in high school and you still love to sleep in!" Grandpa, who came out of the room
, heard the voice and seemed a little annoyed, adding a couple of sentences.

"It's okay, Uncle, actually I often overslept when I was in Taipei too." Worried that I would oversleep again...
She said I was the reason she got scolded, so I quickly tried to smooth things over.

But Mom didn't seem to appreciate it. Just like yesterday, she didn't say a word, hurriedly served herself a
bowl of porridge, ate a few bites, threw down her bowl and chopsticks, and went to school, which made Grandpa grumble a few more times. Since
it wasn't convenient to say anything, I could only smile awkwardly.

The second day of farm life didn't help me adapt. On the contrary, because
I had worked so hard the day before, my hands were covered in blisters, and now whenever I picked up a hoe, my hands felt like they were on fire. But
because I didn't want Grandpa to look down on me, no matter how much my hands hurt, I kept picking up the hoe and diligently turning the soil.

"Hmph... a factory-farmed chicken is just a factory-farmed chicken..." Grandpa said, but he still turned and went to the
small hut next door to get iodine and an OK bandage to bandage my wounds.

But that wasn't all
that , suddenly started teaching me some tips for turning the soil, his tone so gentle that I wondered if I
was dreaming.

"Maybe it's because you're different from other Taipei residents that he changed his opinion a little? Keep it up!"
Grandma whispered to me with a smile while Grandpa wasn't looking. I smiled shyly. I thought this might be
the best interaction I'd ever had with Grandpa.

Then, before I knew it, it was noon again, and I carried the lunchbox Grandma had prepared to Mom's.

"Sister Meixiang~ over here~" My good mood in the morning made me forget that Mom had told me yesterday not to call her that, so
I quickly changed my address and only called her by her name.

"..." Mom looked a little sullen and took the lunchbox from my hand without saying a word.

"W-what's wrong? Did I do something wrong again?" I asked nervously.

"It's nothing to do with you... Thank you for bringing me the lunchbox..." Mom said weakly, then
turned and walked into the school.

"What..." I scratched my head in confusion, and then saw
Uncle Ming, who was just as energetic, standing by the school gate.

"Hi~ It's you delivering lunch to Meixiang again? Are you her brother? I don't think I've seen you before
," Uncle Ming greeted me. Because he looks so different from how he grew up, seeing
his face these past few days has made me want to laugh.

"No, I'm just temporarily staying at her house. What's wrong with Meixiang? She seems
so down ." I briefly explained my background and casually asked Uncle Ming about Meixiang's mother.

"How should I know? She was perfectly fine when I got to school this morning—she was so energetic, chasing after me!
" Uncle Ming smiled brightly, his face covered in pimples that looked like they were about to
burst . 'That's because you peeked at her showering yesterday!' I thought, but didn't say it aloud. I simply thanked

Uncle Ming and left the school. However, the heavy work that afternoon quickly made me forget about it. After all, my grandfather had assigned me so much work that I couldn't possibly have the energy to think about why my mother was so down. Later that evening, after dinner, I sat by the door again, just like the night before, enjoying the evening breeze and gazing at the countless stars overhead. "You seem to really like looking at the stars. Can't you see them in Taipei?" A voice came from the front hall . It was my mother, holding two cups of tea, who handed one to me. "Thank you," I said, taking one. "You can barely see the moon in Taipei anymore, let alone the stars," I said with a smile. "Really? No wonder I've seen you sitting here daydreaming these past few days, haha." My mother said, sitting down on a bench nearby, and then we both looked up at the sky. "Bai Shuang… I have a question for you, are all the girls in Taipei… very pretty?" After a long silence, my mother finally spoke. "I don't really know, but… maybe they are?" I said, tilting my head. "What… don't you even realize whether a girl is pretty or not?" My mother said coquettishly, probably dissatisfied with my answer . "I mean, if it's someone you like, then it's probably true? I don't really like them myself..." I took a sip of tea and continued, "What's wrong? Why are you suddenly asking this?" "Nothing, I just wanted to ask." Mom also took a sip of her tea, and then there was another awkward silence. "Um... at noon, you seemed a little unhappy. If you don't mind, could you tell me what happened?" I turned to Mom and said. "Pfft! Aren't you being a little too serious? Do you even mind? Haha." Mom laughed , and then said, "Actually, it's okay for you to know, but... you can't tell my dad after you hear it, okay?" "Okay, I promise." I raised my hand again, swearing the same oath as last night. "It's nothing really... it's just that the senior I like seems to have a girlfriend after he went to study in Taipei... " Mom gave a bitter smile and continued, "But it's just unrequited love, he's never even noticed me... hahaha..." As she spoke, Mom naturally looked up at the sky, as if trying to stop the tears from falling. "Oh... I see." I said, then thought of my father. Could it be that God sent me here to find my father? "Hey~ why are you so dismissive? You can't even comfort me after hearing this? At least say something like ' there are '? Really..." Mom pouted and turned her head away, somewhat displeased. "No, I didn't mean that, I just thought of something else..." I quickly apologized to Mom. "Alright, alright~ so unromantic, judging from your expression, you must have never had a girlfriend before?" Mom said with a sly smile. "No..." I shook my head. "I was already worried enough about what happened when Mom was in the hospital, how could I possibly have time to date..." "Ah... I'm sorry, I forgot again..." Mom awkwardly clasped her hands together in apology. "It's okay, I told you, I'm used to it..." "Bai Shuang... don't be angry when I say this... actually, at first, I thought you were just a bit of a nutcase."

"You're such a weirdo." Mom stuck out her tongue. "But who told you to wake up on the street that day and start
babbling incoherently in a bunch of words I couldn't understand, and even peek at my underwear..."

"I didn't mean to... and I apologized to you." I interrupted.

"I know... I'm sorry. I just heard from my mom that you've been helping them a lot these past few days, that you're a
hardworking and willing-to-work kid, which made me think... you're not so... weird after all? It's changed my impression of you Taipei people
a little ."

"It's nothing... and besides, isn't it too much to be a freeloader living off others?"

"Hehe~ So you mean -- I'm a freeloader who does nothing?" Mom raised her eyebrows and
chuckled with a crooked mouth.

"You love twisting my words... I didn't say that at all..." I said weakly. I realized
today that Mom also has a dark side.

"Hahaha, I was just kidding!" Mom smiled and kissed me on the cheek. "
I don't have anything to give you, consider this a thank you gift for visiting these past two days~" After saying that, Mom turned and went back into
the house , leaving me looking bewildered...

After that night, a month passed without any significant changes.

I was still the same, spending my days working in the fields with my grandparents, and in the evenings, after taking a bath, I would sit
outside enjoying the cool breeze and occasionally chat with Mom about our time in Taipei.

Sometimes, I even had to act as Mom's tutor. Thanks to the education system, Mom
had already completed most of her schoolwork by the time I was my age. In addition to teaching her how to memorize humanities subjects, I also strengthened
her logic and understanding of formulas in math, which significantly improved her grades, which were originally only average
. I don't know if it was because of this, but I always felt that the way Mom looked at me during that time seemed to
have a hint of ambiguity in addition to admiration...

"After that... did you hear from your senior?" I asked Mom that night while we were chatting.
Because it was related to finding clues about Dad, I had been paying close attention to whether Mom had developed feelings for someone else
or had any new suitors. To my disappointment,
it seemed that Uncle Ming was the only one constantly following my mother around for the past month…

“Heh~ We haven’t been in touch for a while, how come we still hear from him?” My mother sighed, tilting her head back. “
What ? Why are you suddenly asking about your senior again?”

“Nothing, just asking.” I smiled, unable to tell my mother the real reason.

“No? Hehehe… Although I don’t know if you’ve noticed it yourself, you seem to be paying a lot of
attention … Could it be—you’ve fallen for me?” My mother smiled smugly, revealing her signature little
tiger teeth, and suddenly brought her face close to mine: “Am I… right…?”

“H-How could that be! What nonsense are you talking about…” I turned my head away shyly
, and my heart started racing because of my mother’s sudden action.

"Haha, your reaction is like a little girl's! So cute!" Mom then
moved her face closer and closer. "Don't you... ever want to try kissing a girl?" "If it were you...
I could..."

"N-no, I don't want to..." I shook my head, avoiding her eyes. How could I
kiss my own mother?!

"Huh??? Could it be... you're a lesbian???" Mom pulled her face back to
where it was before, looking surprised.

"No way! I'm a normal guy, okay!" I retorted loudly.

"Then... kiss me." Mom closed her eyes and then moved her face closer. We were
so close I could smell the minty scent of her freshly brushed teeth.

"Why... ugh..." Cornered by Mom, I hesitated, looking at her face, unsure
whether I should kiss her or not.

"It's very impolite to make a girl wait..." Mom said, her eyes still closed.

"Tsk... Okay, okay..." Even though my mom is just an ordinary high school girl, the thought of me
kissing my own mother... it's really a bit strange. But it seems like this awkward situation can't end without a
kiss , so in the end I just gave her a light kiss on the lips as an explanation.

"That's it?" Mom opened her eyes and said with dissatisfaction. Then she reached out and grabbed my neck, pressing
her lips to mine for a deep kiss. Because I had no kissing experience,
I was quite startled when Mom offered her tongue, and awkwardly cooperated with her, swirling our tongues together in our mouths.

After about two or three minutes, Mom pulled away from my mouth, then leaned her forehead against mine, her eyes hazy, and asked
me, "...Did you like it?"

"Mmm..." I nodded gently.

"I mean... do you like me?" Mom continued, her eyes still hazy as she looked at me. "Shuang...
I like you..." Then Mom gave me another kiss.

My eyes widened in disbelief at what I was hearing. Startled, I pushed my mother away and ran back to
my room.

"Huff...huff...what happened...huff..." I gasped
for breath, my hands on the table, my mind still replaying my mother's words: "I like you...

" "No! This isn't right!" I clutched my hair, repeating the words over and over. "Mom
...how...how could she like me? Mom should be with Dad..." I
paced back and forth in my room.

'It must be because I suddenly appeared in this era!' I finally
realized .

"Bai Shuang...I'm sorry...I think I know your answer...but I still want you to know my
feelings...I'm sorry..." My mother stood outside the curtain at the door, seemingly having just cried,
sniffling as she spoke.

'How did things turn out like this...?!' I covered my face, standing in my room, unsure
how to respond to my mother. I felt that saying anything more would only make things worse, and hesitated to speak.

"Haha... You don't even want to talk to me? Looks like you've completely failed... Horoscope magazines are all lies..."
"...What do you mean by 'gathering up the courage to confess will definitely lead to a good outcome'... Haha... Haha..." Mom said,
laughing bitterly, her voice growing softer and softer.

"No!" I pulled back the curtain. "It's hard for me to explain to you... but... there's no
future for us..." Seeing Mom crying her eyes out, I felt a pang of sympathy and wanted to hug her immediately to comfort her.
But I was afraid she would misunderstand, so I quickly grabbed a few tissues to wipe her tears.

"Why? Is it because I'm not pretty?" Mom asked as she wiped her tears.

"It's not because of that!" I retorted. Then I handed Mom a few more tissues. "

Then why don't you like me?" As if afraid of disturbing Grandpa and Grandma, Mom lowered her voice, staring at me with wide eyes, her dark brown pupils filled with sadness and anger. "I never said I didn't like you, it's just...it's just..." I stammered, then turned my head away, letting silence answer me... "Pfft! I was just kidding! Look at you, taking it seriously!" Mom suddenly broke the silence and laughed, then pushed my shoulder. "But you're really going too far! What if you said you liked me too? That was my first kiss! Tsk, I'm really in trouble now!" Mom snapped her fingers, looking like she'd miscalculated. "Meixiang...I'm sorry...but I really can't be with you..." Knowing Mom was putting brave face, I said guiltily. Her forced smile broke my heart. "Please~ you really think I like you? I told you~ I was just kidding~ Okay, okay~ go to sleep, or you won't be able to get up tomorrow morning~ Goodnight." With that, Mom quickly turned and left. Although Mom was very careful not to give herself away, in the last moment she turned her head, I saw large tears slide down her cheeks... 'Just admit it...' ' Admit what? I don't have an Oedipus complex.' ' She's just an ordinary high school girl now...' 'But she's still my mom!' 'She doesn't know...' 'But I know! And what we're doing is wrong!' ' Stop lying to yourself, you clearly like her too...' 'I don't! I don't... I don't!' 'Stop lying to yourself...' 'Shut up! Shut up! Don't say it anymore! Please... don't say it anymore...' I slapped myself hard to make the voice in my head disappear, but my mind was still full of images of Mom... 'Oh? That's rare, the sun must be rising in the west, right? You actually overslept?' The next morning, Grandpa teased, not knowing what had happened." "Sorry... I guess it was a bit hot yesterday and I didn't sleep well. I'll go help Auntie make breakfast now..." After quickly brushing my teeth and washing my face, I went to the kitchen to help Grandma. "Good morning, Shuang! What's good to eat today?" When I brought the congee to the front hall, Mom was already changed into her uniform and sitting at the table, looking very energetic. "Wow! Even you've taken the wrong medicine? So early today?" Grandpa looked at the clock on the wall and said in surprise . Usually, Mom would only just get up at this time. "Hehe~ Because I went to bed very early yesterday~" Mom smiled brightly. "But someone does n't seem to have slept well..." Mom glanced at me and said, then drew a half circle under her eyes with her hand, probably referring to my dark circles? But I ignored her and ate my congee. "Then I'm going out~" Seeing that I ignored her, Mom didn't seem to want to make a fool of herself, quietly finished her breakfast, and went to school with a lot of energy. "What's wrong?" Grandma asked me quietly while Grandpa was away. "Nothing, where?"
