Chapter One: A Warm Family

Old Sun was buying groceries.

Old Sun wasn't actually old; he was only fifty this year and was the deputy director of a department in Hunan Province. People called him Old Sun mainly
because Sun Wukong often referred to himself as "Old Sun"—initially, only a few of his mahjong partners called him that, but gradually everyone around him
started calling him "Old Sun." However, this Old Sun was not that "Old Sun." He was 1.75 meters tall and had a robust build;
no one would compare the two.

Enough of the small talk.

At the outermost edge of the market was a row of street vendors, one of whom was a woman named Granny Wang. Old Sun often
bought from her. Granny Wang's vegetables were exquisite, and she often had some new and interesting dishes.

Today, Old Sun had his eye on a particular vegetable—Gardenia flowers (or yellow gardenia flowers). The green gardenia
flowers were soaking in water and served in a large bowl, making Old Sun's appetite very high.

(Note: Yellow gardenia is a Chinese medicinal herb with the effects of clearing heat and detoxifying. Its flowers can be blanched in boiling water, mixed with
some green peppers, and stir-fried in clear oil. It tastes especially delicious... I love this dish the most.)

"Old Sun, what vegetables do you want to buy today?" Granny Wang greeted her with a smile when she saw her old customer arrive.

"Wang Po, half a jin, please..." Old Sun pointed to the bowl of gardenia flowers. "...How much?"

Wang Po rummaged through a plastic bag in a tattered basket and said, "This stuff is precious, it costs 10 yuan
a jin. And it's in season, so if you like it, buy more. You can soak it in water at home and keep it
for a few days."

Hearing this, Old Sun took out ten yuan: "Then give me a jin." He said, "Gardia flowers are
good to eat, they clear heat, detoxify, and stimulate the appetite, but it's a pity they're only available for a few days a year..."

At this moment, a young woman came over, bringing a faint fragrance, and chimed in, "Yes, Luo, doesn't He Jiong
from Hunan TV have a song called 'Gardenia Blossoms'? It's being sung everywhere on the streets now—
you've heard it, haven't you?"

Old Sun smelled the faint fragrance emanating from the young woman, and his heart skipped a beat . He stood up to examine her closely
.

Granny Wang said, "You mean that pretty boy who hosts 'Happy Camp'?!
What songs does he even know? 'Gardenia's Blossom,' he got the 'branch' part wrong, and he calls himself a singer! I think
Wang Han is better; that guy is really good at arguing, I like him.

" The young woman giggled, "Grandma, you're really funny..." She
lifted her skirt and squatted down in front of Granny Wang's vegetable stall, "I'll have half a jin too."

Old Sun glanced at the young woman's bare white feet and pink slippers
, but then decided it wasn't appropriate to linger and hurried out of the market, heading home. He looked back at the corner
; the young woman was still squatting there, unmoved...

Old Sun lived in Xianjia New Village, a quiet suburb of Changsha. The community had excellent landscaping, and
the property management was very good, but the fees were a bit expensive.

He bumped into Chen Hongzhuan in the stairwell. It was his name during the Cultural Revolution, meaning "both red and expert." He greeted
Old Sun with a smile, "Director Sun, going to buy groceries?"

Old Sun smiled back, "Yes, Old Chen, are you going out?"

Chen Hongzhuan said, "My son's back. He's waiting for me at the door, saying we're going to Yinzhou for dinner." He then
hurried downstairs.

Old Sun couldn't help but envy Chen Hongzhuan, remembering he'd been home alone for almost two months, and shook
his head. A while later, he reached the third floor, opened the door, and suddenly froze.

On the red carpet by the door lay a pair of pink women's sandals,
the same color as the slippers the young woman had worn at the market. The heels were thin and shiny black; placed side by side, the heels looked like
two black jade pillars.

His wife was back!

Just as Old Sun was thinking this, he heard a clear voice from the kitchen: "Dad, is that you?
" A young woman emerged, with bangs, dressed in sportswear, radiating energy, and sporting two
dimples. At first glance, she looked like the famous actress Xu Qing.

Old Sun was a little surprised and said, "Xu Ying?! Why are you back in Changsha?"

Xu Ying leaned against the railing on the split-level building and said coquettishly, "I came back to keep Dad company, is that not allowed?"

"Sure, sure, sure!" Old Sun nodded hurriedly, changing his shoes as he went. "You should have called when you got back, I
could have picked you up."

Xu Ying smiled and said, "How could I trouble Dad, no, Director Sun? I took a taxi back myself
." She took the groceries from Old Sun's hands. "I bought so much, I'm almost done cooking."

Xu Ying headed towards the kitchen, but just as she was about to enter, she suddenly turned back and smiled: "Dad, I put
chili peppers !" She then made a face.

Old Sun's heart skipped a beat. He stood frozen at the door for a few seconds before snapping out of his daze. He was about to go to the kitchen to help his wife when he
called out, "Xu Ying, you just got back, take a rest. I'll do the cooking." He hurried towards the kitchen.

Before he'd gone far, Xu Ying came out carrying a small rice cooker. "I've already made three dishes.
Dad, do you want me to cook another one?"

Old Sun said, "Three dishes are enough. How much can the two of us eat? Let me see what Yingying made
."

He went into the kitchen and saw two plates of cooked dishes already laid out on the counter: one with cucumber and ham,
and the other with stir-fried green peppers and dried tofu. The water in the pot hadn't boiled yet, but several finely sliced winter melon pieces were already bubbling inside—
it was winter melon and pork soup.

Xu Ying followed him in, carrying a large white porcelain bowl with blue and white decorations, inside which was already a small handful of scallions:
"Dad, the soup is ready, we can eat now. Doesn't my cooking look nice?"

Old Sun nodded and said, "Not bad, not bad! A lighter flavor is good, the weather's getting hot, that's exactly what we need
... It looks nice too, but I wonder how it tastes?"

"Dad, you should try it first." Xu Ying immediately handed over a pair of chopsticks, extending them towards Old Sun.

"Oh, okay!" Old Sun turned to take the chopsticks from Xu Ying, and in a flash, he saw Xu Ying's face less than
a foot away, her big eyes blinking playfully at him. His hand trembled, and one of the
chopsticks slipped from his grasp, bouncing on the countertop before falling to the floor.

Old Sun reached out to catch it, but missed, and the chopstick fell to the ground. He hurriedly bent down to pick it up. He then heard Xu Ying...
With a soft "Ah!", their heads bumped lightly.

Old Sun quickly reached out to help Xu Ying up, saying, "Are you alright? It's all my fault... Sigh, I'm getting old,
my hands and feet aren't as nimble as they used to be."

They both stood up. Xu Ying lowered her head, then squatted down again to pick up the chopsticks,
saying , "Dad, what do you mean 'getting old'? You're just talking nonsense." She placed the chopsticks on the table and took the two dishes
out.

Seeing that Xu Ying didn't look up at him, Old Sun felt a little uneasy, but didn't know what to say. He hesitated for a moment, noticing
Xu Ying hadn't come back in. He thought to himself, "It was just a bump, it's nothing, my wife shouldn't
be angry." As he thought this, he felt his hands gradually warming up; the soup was boiling.

Old Sun quickly turned off the stove, picked up the iron pot, and carefully poured the soup into a large blue-and-white porcelain bowl. He called out to the outside,
"Xu Ying, the soup is ready."

"Coming!" Xu Ying replied crisply from outside and came in. "Dad, take the soup out,
I'll get the bowls and chopsticks."

Old Sun quickly replied, "Okay, okay."

Xu Ying opened the sterilizer, took out two sets of bowls and chopsticks, and a soup spoon. "It's ready, time to eat
."

The father-in-law and daughter-in-law walked to the dining room together. Old Sun secretly glanced at her and couldn't help but think that Xu Ying's face still looked a little flushed
.

The two sat down.

Old Sun first tasted both dishes, then drank a small spoonful of soup, praising, "Hmm, not bad, Yingying
's cooking is getting better and better, quite skillful."

Receiving Old Sun's approval, Xu Ying's face lit up with a smile, and she quickly picked up a slice of ham and put it in Old Sun's bowl:
"Thank you, Dad, then eat some more."

Looking at Xu Ying's happy and slightly playful expression, Old Sun's thoughts resurfaced: Beijing
girls are definitely more open and spoiled than Changsha girls… (This only represents Old Sun's opinion)

. Old Sun ate a couple of mouthfuls of rice, straightened his expression, and asked, "Yingying, didn't you say you'd
go to the Li River to be with Sun Wei and your sister after you finished your business in Guangxi? Why are you back?"

Xu Ying replied, "The Li River? The filming in the Li River is finished, and now they've gone to Mount Hua. I
don't want to go to Mount Hua; I've been there a few times, and there's nothing fun about it."

"Goed to Mount Hua?" Old Sun was taken aback. "That kid Sun Wei didn't even call me, really."

"Dad!" Xu Ying put another piece of ham on Old Sun's plate. "Don't blame Sun Wei, blame that Zhang Jizhong
. I don't think he's a good person at all. He's seventy or eighty years old and still has long hair. I heard he's the most troublesome
person..."

The father-in-law and daughter-in-law chatted casually. The chandelier in the dining room cast a golden glow, illuminating the area
around the dining table. The living room lights were still off. The father-in-law and daughter-in-law ate their meal under the lamplight—what a warm and cozy
scene!

Meanwhile, far away in Huashan, the film crew had begun shooting night scenes...

Chapter Two: Night Rain in Xiaoxiang

In April, Changsha nights were already celebrating the passing of the spring chill, making the nightlife
vibrant and colorful . Whether it was the bustling Huangxing Road pedestrian street or the beautiful riverside avenue, neon lights and bustling crowds were everywhere
; people seemed to have forgotten about sleep. The loud shouts of vendors in the night market and
the soft murmurs of couples under the willow trees along the Xiangjiang River created a complex blend of restlessness and tranquility.

In Xianjia New Village, far out in the suburbs, Old Sun was also awake.

Thick mist seeped in through the open window, plunging Yuelu Mountain into a dark, oppressive
darkness . Dark clouds began to gather in the sky, surging rapidly, occasionally revealing a sliver of
dazzling white light—a thunderstorm was imminent.

Old Sun got out of bed and stood by the window. Everything seemed still; Xianjia Lake
was quiet, even the mosquitoes were lying in wait. A houseboat drifted aimlessly on the lake, a lantern hanging from its bow,
motionless. Occasionally, a figure would move, and Old Sun thought, "The boatman is about to haul in his nets again.

" Sure enough, two more figures appeared in the lantern's light, pulling on the net. Small splashes
of water appeared on the lake's surface, ripples spreading outwards, breaking the tranquility of Xianjia Lake.

Then everything began to move.

The willow branches beneath the window began to sway gently, and the air began to move. Old Sun took two deep breaths,
sensing the fresh, earthy scent in the air. A frog led the way with a few croaks, and then
the croaking grew louder and louder, big and small, near and far, interspersed with the chirping of insects.
Old Sun was even more wide awake; this late spring night! He remembered a folk song from his youth: "

Frogs croak, the water is vast, young men think of their wives, young women think of their dowries..."

The wind grew stronger. Some plastic bags and scraps of paper were blown up from the lake shore, flying in the darkness, and the sound of awnings being tossed about by the wind came from
the rooftops . Old Sun quickly closed the window, then looked out again through the window. The boatman
had already hauled in his nets; the splash was huge when he pulled them up, and the nets were full of white, wriggling fish. The boat
began to move, quickly approaching the shore.

Old Sun glanced at the alarm clock on the table; it was almost three o'clock. Suddenly remembering the living room balcony window was probably still open,
he slipped on a pair of slippers and headed outside. He stopped abruptly as soon as he opened the door. There was still light in the living room;
his wife must still be awake.

For the past two months, his wife had often stayed up late watching TV alone. Old Sun, who also slept little,
had noticed his wife's behavior but had never interfered. As someone with experience, he
understood .

Was longing for one's husband also a part of Chinese culture?

Old Sun peered into the living room. The 43-inch rear-projection TV was on, but there was no signal; the volume was turned down
to the minimum, leaving only a dense, flickering screen. Under the screen's light, the orange sofa
seemed to be coated with silver.

Xu Ying, wearing a thin-strapped nightgown, leaned lazily against the sofa, her eyes hazy, staring intently at the TV screen
. A pair of long, slender legs emerged from the nightgown and rested on the coffee table. Beside the feet sat a tall
glass , still half-full of liquid, which reflected a blood-red glow under the fluorescent light. Next to it, an overturned bottle of red wine.
But no wine spilled; it was clearly all gone.

Old Sun was startled and quickly left the room and entered the living room: "Yingying, how could you drink so much by yourself…?"
