Chapter Twelve: The Guardian of the Ruins
"Hand over the 'Artifact'."
These were the first words Mulis spoke to Lelona after their reunion.
His expression was calm and indifferent, only the ferocious look on his mount, accompanied
by chilling growls, perfectly complemented the force of his words.
On the vast Igufimang Desert,
two women and a man, along with another man and a wild beast, faced off.
Even without Lelona's intervention, Nevaro knew they had lost.
He had witnessed this man's strength firsthand that night when they were being hunted;
even the unharmed Lelona was no match for him.
Now, not only was Lelona's arrow wound in her left thigh still healing,
but he and Qibilins were not only powerless but might also be a hindrance.
He believed this man could easily defeat the three of them,
especially considering the mount was clearly a magical beast; they had no chance of winning.
Nevaro's assessment was actually incorrect. For Mulis to kill them now would be as easy as cutting vegetables.
There was absolutely no cover here except for the sand,
putting an assassin like Lelona at a significant disadvantage.
Not to mention, "Beast" possessed the ability to mentally sway its target; the disparity in strength between the two sides was far greater than imagined.
Lelona's usually cold and beautiful face turned quite grim this time. Her brows furrowed as if she were deep in thought,
her gaze constantly shifting between the other woman and Nevaro. Then, as if making a decision, she
placed a hand on Nevaro's shoulder, ignoring his confusion, and said,
"If we hand him over, will you spare me and this Atman man beside me?"
Clearly, the situation left her with no other choice; she had been forced to make this decision.
"Hmm... I can guarantee your safety." Mulis pointed at Lerona
and Qibilins, who could only stand trembling to the side. In fact, he didn't need to pay attention to this woman's opinion at all.
Although he possessed formidable combat power, he was not a person who enjoyed killing.
"Wait... wait a minute! He wants the 'divine artifact,' what does that have to do with me
?" Upon hearing that the problem could be solved by handing him over, Nevaro was immediately stunned and confused.
He gently patted the hand on his shoulder and asked the two who were negotiating.
"Not long ago, I led my knights to steal a coffin that had been sealed for a hundred years from the Wan Yun Empire,"
Lelona said, glancing up at the patiently waiting Mulis before continuing,
"Unexpectedly, we were attacked by Mr. Mulis's troops on the way, and the seal on the coffin was accidentally broken.
And sealed inside was none other than you… Nevaro.
"I believe Mr. Mulis also saw that you didn't look like this back then,
but a woman three meters tall, emanating black aura or flames…"
Nevaro's eyes widened, clearly remembering something.
Farmers were busy tilling the fields, hunters were busy hunting, children were playing happily, and farm women were either washing clothes or weaving.
It was a monotonous yet peaceful daily life; at least for most of the villagers, their lives were happy,
free from war and conflict, filled only with simple life, simple joy, and simple love.
The boy followed his most admired father, diligently learning how to till the land.
He remembered how, no matter how hard the work, his father would always stroke his head with his rough but warm hands,
then give him a seemingly foolish yet reassuring smile.
All of this changed that afternoon!
The sunlight, the white clouds, the blue sky almost vanished, leaving only a black flame covering the entire sky.
No one knew what it was, nor where it came from.
It was as if fate was jealous of the happy people,
venting its discontent on the earth in the most ordinary way. Black rain descended upon the world,
drowning people's happiness, joy, and courage, leaving them only to struggle desperately on the edge of death in this black torrent.
Everything around was like a deliberately shattered oil painting; not a single corner was normal.
People could no longer control their bodies and emotions, letting them twist and distort in the face of cruel reality.
When the boy noticed his father's once-black hair had turned white, his strong body now as thin as a skeleton, and
his yellowish eyes almost falling out of their drooping sockets, he too became part of the distortion…
“Child, although this is cruel to you, I hope you can help me with this…”
The words, meant to convey pity, were devoid of emotion in the spellcaster's mouth; he was cold and detached.
The spellcaster's large hand pressed against the boy's head, and then the boy seemed to see something—
one after another, images that shouldn't belong to this world, one voice after another that didn't belong to humanity.
Finally, a massive black figure appeared before him… It was a woman,
a woman with deathly pale skin and long, jet-black hair,
curled up in agony, just like the boy's current state of mind.
"No—!"
Finally, the boy broke down. Thousands of partings, sorrows, helplessness, and deaths overwhelmed his mind,
making him unable to recognize what memories truly belonged to him.
But all the memories shared the same common thread:
"Destruction..."
"What?" Seemingly hearing what the dazed Nevaro said,
Lelona secretly tossed a small piece of silver metal from her hand.
Because the metal fell onto the desert behind her legs,
no one except Qibilins noticed its existence.
She quietly gathered a bit of battle aura under her feet and stepped on the metal.
"I...that...how could I...this is impossible!" Nevaro's face was more ferocious than ever before.
Not only his voice but also his body trembled. He held his head in his hands,
his hair already a mess, and he was drenched in cold sweat.
"Come with me..." Seeing that it was almost time, Mulis had his mount come forward to pull Nevaro away.
"Lelona, I hope you can forgive my ignorance. Perhaps I almost ruined you...
or Atman's homeland... I didn't know... My God! I would have destroyed all of this!"
Now, he remembered how he had awakened. He only remembered being incredibly tall,
and any human touched by his hands would inexplicably rot, age, and die.
This way of dying was no different from the tragedy in his memory.
"Mr. Nevalo..." Zibilins tried to say something,
but she quickly noticed that Nevalo's eyes had lost their light.
He was like a living corpse, letting Mulis lift him up with one hand.
"It's almost time..."
Lerona silently counted in her mind, from the moment she secretly threw down the metal...
Then she suddenly turned and pounced on Zibilins, who hadn't even had time to cry out.
The two girls tumbled down the dune, clinging to each other. Mulis noticed the strange situation but didn't know how to react.
He quickly realized something was amiss. The sand beneath the beast's feet split in two,
revealing a gaping maw resembling that of a dragon. This colossal creature, carrying the beast's body, charged into the air.
The once ferocious beast could only let out a series of screams before crashing to the sand alongside its master.
The monster with the dragon-like maw didn't roar at anything like a wild animal. Instead,
it twisted its worm-like body, crafted from thousands of artificial building blocks,
and looked at the monster it had just blasted away. Finally, the monster, now on all fours, was no longer afraid.
It turned and let out a terrifying roar at the towering mechanical monster.
An ordinary person standing before it might have been stunned,
but unfortunately, this wasn't human… or even a living being.
The stones on the mechanical monster began to shift strangely,
resembling waves crashing against its head.
It opened its enormous maw, aiming at the roaring beast. The beast's
previously ferocious face, upon seeing the intense red light emanating from the depths of the monster's throat,
lost its primal instincts and displayed a surprisingly human-like fear, turning and fleeing.
Mu Lisi had just stood up when he felt a massive surge of heat sweep over him—
a fiery red beam of light, resembling some kind of high-level incantation, yet somehow different.
The sand struck by the beam was scorched black.
The mechanical monster twisted its head, manipulating the beam to relentlessly pursue the frantically fleeing beast.
Fortunately, the deadly, scorching beam didn't last long;
after a full ten seconds, the mechanical monster closed its mouth, and the shifting stones on its body ceased.
When Mulis noticed the monster turning to look at him, he instinctively tried to find Nevaro,
but to his surprise, Nevaro, who had just crashed nearby, had vanished!
"Sigh!"
He sighed helplessly and roared at the distant beast.
Hearing its master's call, the beast immediately turned and ran back. Just as Mulis mounted the mount,
a huge cloud of dust suddenly erupted from where he had been standing,
and the mechanical monster that should have been in the distance suddenly burst out of the dust.
"What!"
He immediately tightened his grip on the beast's neck, forcing it to change direction.
The enormous mechanical monster almost brushed past them, and
the seemingly intricate yet chaotic cubes began to shift again.
The mechanical monster then burrowed underground at an astonishing speed, like a drill,
the dust it kicked up making it almost impossible for Mulis to see anything in front of him...
A dozen minutes later, a blurry figure quietly moved away in the opposite direction from Mulis.
When the mechanical monster charged out, Lelona immediately sprinkled the powder on herself and Qi Bilins,
making them clearly visible only within a five-meter radius.
This was why Mu Lisi couldn't see them.
Lelona also took advantage of the chaos to rescue the unconscious Nevaro.
"Miss Lelona... what... just now?" Qi Bilins, carrying the unconscious Nevaro, followed behind,
asking with lingering fear. Lelona, leading the way, carried the three people's bundles alone.
Seeing that things seemed to be alright for the time being, Lelona breathed a sigh of relief, took out her water bottle, and took a sip.
This time, she decided to satisfy the Atman girl's curiosity directly, but she needed to find a place to rest first.
She saw a stone pillar protruding from the desert ahead,
part of the ruins, which would be a perfect place to rest.
Reaching out, she touched the totem on the stone pillar.
After a short while, she knew roughly where she was in the desert.
The reason was simple... every pillar in the Igufimang Desert Ruins was unique.
The Knights' archives had long recorded information about this ruin,
and the Knights' headquarters, located next to the ruins, had naturally been studying the artifacts left behind by this ancient civilization.
Lelona put down her bundle and leaned wearily against the dry, scorching pillar.
The pillar's greatest advantage was that it shielded them from some of the sunlight,
making their rest easier.
"Ah!" Zibilins exclaimed. Lelona quickly stood up and looked back,
but the exclamation was because Zibilins had
accidentally bumped into Nevalo's head while trying to put him down.
"Mr. Nevalo... I'm sorry..." "
That thing was the guardian of the Igufimang Ruins." Seeing that everything was alright,
Lelona breathed a sigh of relief and said to Zibilins, who was busy drinking water.
"What is... the Igfiman... ruins?" Seeing that Lelona was willing to talk to her about these things,
the Atman girl immediately moved closer to Lelona, but the latter felt it was too hot to be squeezed together and
quietly moved a little to the side.
Lelona began to tell the Atman girl what she knew about the Igfiman civilization.
The Igfiman civilization was once the most powerful and prosperous existence on the continent .
It was a vast empire built by dwarves and humans working together. It possessed advanced technology that modern people could hardly imagine.
For example, the machine that looked like an earthworm and could shoot destructive beams
was just an Igfiman mining machine.
The formidable combat capability of a single mining machine could rival any army of any empire today.
Those mining machines were easily attracted to rare metals...
This explains why Lerona threw something into the sand earlier;
what she threw was mithril, one of the rarest metals on the continent.
By using her battle aura to stomp the mithril into the ground, she easily attracted the nearby guardians of the ruins.
Those who learned of this civilization's existence for the first time found it hard to believe,
especially since they couldn't understand why the machines would move on their own without human intervention.
Of course, Zibilins was no exception, and the Knights of the Ring still haven't solved this mystery.
Possessing the world's most advanced technology, the most advanced civilization,
and the most advanced weaponry, this unimaginably powerful nation left no complete history.
It seemed to have been deliberately erased from history.
Many countries' predecessors recorded its existence, but no one knew how it perished.
Even thousands of years later, it remains a mystery…
When Nevalo regained consciousness, it was already noon the next day.
He vaguely felt Zibilins struggling to carry him, but what truly brought him back to reality
was that enormous face that filled him with a sense of oppression.
It looked like an old man's face, a face made up of stone blocks of varying sizes.
It crawled across the desert with its strong hands, uttering sounds that were impossible to decipher.
It could only crawl because its lower body had long since disappeared, leaving a gaping hole at its waist.
"Boom!"
The old man raised his thick arm and slammed it into the desert.
Even the three watching from a distance could clearly feel the violent tremor beneath their feet.
A pillar of sand shot into the sky after the old man's blow, demonstrating the terrifying power of the strike; a
direct hit would likely leave only minced flesh.
"What...is this!"
Just as Nevalo exclaimed in shock, the blocks on the old man's back began to shift strangely, like a mining machine.
More than a dozen small, four-legged machines crawled out from his back,
wriggling across the desert like insects, seemingly chasing some target.
The small machine at the forefront sprayed seeds from its back. The seeds sprouted in mid-air and,
upon landing, grew wildly, transforming into several thick vines that stretched along the ground
as they rushed towards their target, forming rope-like structures to ensnare it.
"Miss Lelona... that was... a mining machine, and... what is this?" Upon seeing the bizarre scene,
Qi Bilin trembled involuntarily. She hadn't expected to encounter something similar so soon.
"Looks like we're in big trouble..." Lelona sighed helplessly.
