Summary: This article is adapted from Chapter 23 of Journey to the West: Sanzang Does Not Forget His Roots, Four Sages Test His Zen Mind. It is the story of Guanyin, Manjushri, and Samantabhadra Bodhisattvas, along with four immortals and Buddhas, including the Old Mother of Lishan invited by Guanyin, who disguised themselves as beautiful women to seduce the master and his disciples.
The story goes that Sanzang and his companions were traveling westward. One evening, as they were setting out, Sanzang said, "Disciples, it's getting late. Where shall we rest?"
Wukong laughed, "Master, monks eat the wind and sleep on the water, sleep under the moon and frost. Where can't we rest? Let's make do here for the night."
Zhu Bajie, however, complained about the heavy luggage and the slow horse, saying, "Master's horse is so tall and strong, yet it only carries this old monk. Let it carry a few things; that would be a brotherly gesture."
Wukong laughed and said, "You call it a horse? It's no ordinary horse. It's the son of Ao Run, the Dragon King of the West Sea, named the Third Prince Dragon Horse." "He was accused of disobeying the heavenly law by his father for setting fire to the pearl in the palace. It was only thanks to Guanyin Bodhisattva that his life was saved. He waited for his master for a long time at Eagle's Sorrow Gorge, and fortunately, the Bodhisattva herself came and removed his scales and horns, took the pearl from his neck, and transformed him into this horse, willing to carry his master to the Western Paradise to worship Buddha. This is all due to one's own merits; you shouldn't
try to take credit for it." Despite saying this, Sun Wukong's playful nature arose. He used his old skill as the Keeper of the Heavenly Horses, pointing his Ruyi Jingu Bang at the dragon horse. Even though the horse was a dragon in disguise, it was still afraid of being hit, and immediately its four hooves flew like lightning, galloping away.
Tang Sanzang was terrified. Before he could even utter the word "You impudent monkey," his dragon horse was already far away, seemingly riding on clouds. Fortunately, he had some martial arts skills and managed to grip the saddle tightly with both legs, barely managing to stay upright and avoid falling to his death.
When did Tang Sanzang learn martial arts? It turns out that Sun Wukong, seeing that he was weak and feeble, would teach Tang Sanzang some breathing techniques during his free time, under the pretext of strengthening his body. The elder was easily swayed and, hearing that it was purely for health, learned a little bit. However, one must know what kind of person the Great Sage Equaling Heaven was; the breathing techniques he taught Tang Sanzang were actually extremely miraculous. Ordinary people who learned them would strengthen their muscles and bones and be immune to all diseases. Tang Sanzang studied them for over a year, establishing a solid foundation, and his skills were no longer what they used to be. Even running at lightning speed, he didn't fall off his horse.
After galloping for a while, the dragon horse reached the top of the slope and began to walk slowly. Tang Sanzang was also exhausted and covered in sweat. He cursed, "Wukong, you naughty monkey, you scared the horse. I could have kept up with it."
Wukong, Bajie, and Sha Wujing caught up from behind and saw a grove of pine trees with several magnificent houses inside. It seemed to be the home of a wealthy family. The pine, cypress, and bamboo trees cast lush green shadows, and several clumps of wild chrysanthemums were planted by the fence. It was a beautiful farmhouse.
Sanzang initially wanted to complain, but seeing that they could rest near a house, his anger subsided. He said, "Disciple, look over there, there's a manor over there. We can ask to stay there."
Sun Wukong, being more experienced, noticed the manor, with its fields and houses, but no chickens, dogs, cattle, or sheep in sight, and not a sound to be heard. He took note. Opening his fiery eyes, he saw auspicious clouds shrouding the sky, a veil of
good fortune. He knew it must be a test set up by immortals for the master and his disciples. Sun Wukong cursed inwardly, "What kind of idle gods are these? Why don't they stay in the sacred palaces and celestial abodes? Instead of cultivating properly, they come here to torment me!"
The Great Sage plucked a hair from his head and blew a breath of immortal energy, transforming it into an identical Sun Wukong. The real Sun Wukong transformed into a tiny insect, which nestled near Pigsy's ear. The fake Monkey King said, "Alright, alright, let's ask to stay there."
They saw a gate with lotus-shaped eaves and painted beams. Sha Wujing put down his load, and Bajie led the horse, saying, "This family is excessively wealthy." Wukong, in his haste, was about to enter when Sanzang said, "No, we are both monks; we should avoid suspicion. Let's wait for someone to come out and politely ask for lodging."
Bajie tied up the horse and leaned against the wall; Sanzang sat on a stone drum; Wukong and Sha Wujing sat on the edge of a platform. After a long while, no one came out. Wukong called his clone to jump into the doorway and look inside. There were three large halls facing south, with high curtains. Hanging above the screen door was a horizontal scroll painting of longevity and happiness; on the two gilded pillars on either side were pasted a couplet on large red paper, which read: "Silk threads flutter on the willows by the bridge at dusk; Snowflakes dot the plum blossoms in the courtyard in spring."
Suddenly, he heard footsteps coming from the back door, and a middle-aged woman came out, asking in a coquettish voice: "Who is it, daring to enter my widow's door?" The Great Sage was flustered and stammered: "This humble monk comes from the Great Tang Dynasty in the East, and is on a mission to the West to worship Buddha and seek scriptures. The four of us are passing through Baofang, and since it is getting late, we have come to the old bodhisattva's residence to ask for lodging for the night."
Hearing that there were four of them, the woman exclaimed happily, "Elder, where are the other three? Please come in!" The
avatar of the Monkey King then pushed open the door and called out, "Master, please come in!"
The woman, her face beaming with smiles, greeted him. Pigsy glanced at her and saw that she was indeed a beautiful woman, almost like a celestial being descended to earth: her beautiful eyes sparkled with spring-like joy, her cheeks flushed a vibrant red, she wore a light red undergarment covered by a light green silk jacket, her fragrant shoulders and fair neck half-concealed, revealing indescribable whiteness and smoothness; further down, her breasts were high and round, seemingly about to burst forth, almost breaking through the thin veil. Although she wore no makeup, it did not diminish her ripe, seductive fragrance. Pigsy's crotch bulged high, and saliva soaked through his bra!
The little insect that the Monkey King had transformed into whispered in Pigsy's ear, "Junior brother! Junior brother! Be careful, this harlot is actually a Bodhisattva!"
Pigsy was startled, and his lustful desire immediately diminished by more than half. "Senior brother, how come I can't see that you're using this clone technique again? Are you trying to trick me again?"
The Monkey King laughed and said, "You fool! When I was making a ruckus in the Heavenly Palace, I developed my Fiery Eyes of Truth. You know how to see the harlot in this Bodhisattva's lewd appearance. She must be testing our group, maybe even targeting you!"
Pigsy said, "Pfft, pfft, senior brother, you're too suspicious. This kind of family must be rich in oil and produce, and they're sincerely offering alms to monks. Why don't we take this opportunity to eat our fill and then make our plans?"
While the two were whispering, the beautiful woman had already invited the group into the hall. After the greetings, a girl with a bun and flowing hair carried a golden tray and a white jade cup, serving fragrant tea. The girl's features were exquisite, her beauty ethereal, and her graceful figure seemed otherworldly. Pigsy was captivated by her beauty.
"Junior brother, stop drooling! Look closely; this is Xiniu Hezhou, a land with no villages or towns in front and only barren mountains behind. Suddenly, a large mansion appears, with a widow and an orphan girl, and such beauty and character. Isn't this a trap?"
"Brother, what you say is true; even when I commanded the Heavenly Navy, I didn't encounter such a beauty. But we've already entered her home, what should we do?"
"Heh! It's rare that you're so clear-headed. I secretly warned you because I was afraid you'd be blinded by lust and ruin the whole plan. I already have a plan. Let me talk to Wujing, maybe we brothers will all get something out of it!" Pigsy, hearing there was something to gain, readily agreed and stopped arguing.
In a short while, Wukong flew around, devising plans with Bajie and Sha Wujing. Meanwhile, the widow recounted her family's fortunes to Tang Sanzang, her voice as sweet and melodious as a nightingale's song. She then mentioned that her husband had died young, leaving her as a widow with three daughters, a perfect match for Tang Sanzang and his disciples. She seemed to be planning to find husbands for them while she was on the mountain. As she spoke, her beautiful eyes, like autumn waters, swept over the four men
in turn. Her captivating charm would have made any ordinary man weak in the knees and utterly mesmerized. However, Tang Sanzang was a true being who had cultivated for ten lifetimes, focused solely on seeking the scriptures. He remained silent, pretending not to hear the woman's attempts to tousle her hair, reveal her shoulders, and flaunt her breasts. He remained calm and composed, refusing to respond.
The three fellow disciples had already made arrangements, their six thieving eyes deliberately peering at the beautiful woman, taking in her flower-like beauty and snow-white skin. How could this pretty widow not notice?
"I am forty-five years old this year. My eldest daughter is named Zhenzhen, and she is twenty years old this year; my second daughter is named Ai'ai, and she is eighteen years old this year; my youngest daughter is named Lianlian, and she is sixteen years old this year. She is skilled in needlework and all kinds of needlework, and none of them have been betrothed. When they were young, I also taught them to read some Confucian books, and they all know how to compose poems and couplets. They are all worthy of the elders."
The pretty widow sipped her tea, the steam rising and making her cheeks flush, enhancing her beauty. She continued softly, "The customs here are slightly different from those of the Tang Dynasty. Before a daughter gets married, in addition to all the household chores, she also has to learn some seductive arts; she is well-versed in the essentials of the 'Su Nu' and 'Xuan Nu' classics, as well as the 'Yu Fang' series..." She rambled on and on, as if she felt she had said too much, then blushed and stopped talking.
Pigsy couldn't hold back any longer and chimed in, "Mother, when I was young, I also learned a method of enduring hardship, which is exactly what 'a worthy opponent' means!"
Tang Sanzang, who had been keeping his head down, shouted upon hearing this, "You wretched beast! We are monks, how can we be swayed by wealth and status or distracted by beauty? What kind of logic is that!"
Sandy feigned, "Brother, why don't you become his son-in-law?" Pigsy said shyly, "Brother, don't trick me, let's think it over." Wukong's clone shoved Pigsy and laughed, "You also have a family in Gao Village, you must be skilled at work, why not stay and become a ready-made son-in-law!" The three of them bickered and joked, seemingly quite tempted.
The monk, looking displeased, sighed, "Female Bodhisattva, you enjoy wealth and luxury as a layperson, with clothes to wear, food to eat, and children to gather with—truly wonderful. But you don't know that I, a monk, also have my advantages. How can I prove it with a poem? The poem says: 'Leaving home to establish a noble will, overthrowing the former hall of love and affection. External things do not cause idle gossip, within the body there is good yin
and yang. When the work is completed and the practice fulfilled, one goes to the golden palace, seeing one's true nature and enlightening one's mind, returning to one's homeland. This is far better than staying at home, indulging in blood and food, only to fall into a stinking carcass in old age.' The widow angrily said, 'This rude monk! I sincerely wanted to take you as my husband, yet you call me a stinking carcass! My late husband and I practiced the art of the bedroom for many years, harmonizing yin and yang, the man using it to enhance qi, the woman using it to cure illness. At forty-five, I am still this beautiful. Are you blind, you brute monk?'
After cursing, she suddenly stood up, deliberately swaying her large breasts, making them heaving!" Before Sanzang could offer any gentle persuasion, Sun Wukong and the beautiful maidservant turned back into the house, only to be turned away at the door.
Sanzang regretted his words and hesitated, saying, "Disciples, which of you should stay here?"
Sun Wukong then transformed back into his original form and laughed, "Master, don't be hasty, or we might fall into a trap!"
Wukong then used his silver tongue to portray the Buddha as a demon, plotting to eat Tang Sanzang's flesh, leaving Sanzang stunned, while Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing chuckled to themselves.
Sun Wukong was eloquent, and Sanzang, easily swayed, already believed him completely. Trembling, he asked, "Disciple, what do you say we should do?"
Wukong said, "Master, don't be afraid! With me, the Great Sage Sun, here, all those lustful demons will suffer!"
Sanzang, filled with compassion, said, "Demons and monsters alike are all living beings; we must not kill them."
Bajie laughed, "Master, we can't bear to kill them! We can't bear to kill them! But some maneuvering is unavoidable; besides, that wicked woman has three daughters, while we brothers are only three. I'm afraid two fists can't fight four...no...four hands!"
Sanzang, regarding the relationship between men and women... Extremely dull-witted, not recognizing the word "pussy," he said with a troubled expression, "This humble monk only knows how to chant scriptures
, recite Buddhist mantras, sweep pagodas, and burn incense; I know nothing else..." Sun Wukong said seriously, "Master, you're confused! Didn't I pass on a set of techniques to you? I'll activate your Dharma Wheel and open your meridians, making it difficult for ordinary demons to harm you!"
After saying this, the Great Sage Sun blew a breath of immortal energy into Tang Sanzang's lower abdomen. Tang Sanzang immediately felt a surge of heat rising from his lower abdomen to his chest, spreading throughout his body, circulating continuously, making him feel refreshed and invigorated. His muscles twitched like rats, and a burst of true energy emanated from his mouth, shaking the roof tiles. He felt as
if he had been reborn. "Disciple, this is truly a wonderful method! I have lived foolishly for forty years, and I have never felt so energetic!" Tang Sanzang's body's potential was activated by a mechanism called the Dharma Wheel. The pure yang essence of his ten incarnations was like a dream awakening, naturally making him a hundred times more energetic.
Seeing that his plan was half successful, Wukong laughed, "Master, we've come this far! Our method will catch these demons off guard and we'll surely capture them easily. But..." The mischievous monkey winked at his two junior brothers, and the three of them explained their entire plan to Sanzang. After a while, a loud voice rang out from the hall: "What? Breaking the precept against lust..." White chrysanthemums silently withered beside the low fence in the courtyard, perhaps hinting at their impending doom. Meanwhile,
Sanzang and his companions were traveling through a pine forest when they encountered a wealthy widow seeking a husband. Sanzang refused, and tried to persuade her with a poem, but his efforts backfired. In reality, it was a Buddhist or celestial being's guidance, but Wukong and the others devised a scheme to trick Sanzang into believing he was trapped in a demon's lair, and then activated the Pure Yang Dharma Wheel, drawing out his golden true energy.
At this moment, Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, and Sha Wujing were waiting in the hall. Zhu Bajie pretended to lead the dragon horse to graze and went to the backyard. Sure enough, he saw the beautiful witch widow and three young women admiring flowers by the fence.
When the mother and her three daughters saw Bajie coming, the three daughters slipped inside. This Marshal Tianpeng was not easy to deal with. He had already sized them up and saw that the three women had graceful figures, some plump and some slender, all with stunningly beautiful figures.
Zhu Bajie swallowed hard and thought to himself, "Indeed, they are divine transformations. They are probably no less beautiful than my old flame, the fairy Chang'e! But my eldest brother is right. We are always being tricked by those idle gods. Now, with the help of the three brothers, we can teach them a lesson."
Zhu Bajie was actually very shrewd, and with his lewd face, he was scheming. The living goddess in front of him could not see through his schemes and only thought that he had fallen for the beauty trap.
The woman stood at the door and said, "Where are you going, little elder?" When she saw that only Bajie was there, her tone became sweet and friendly, and her beautiful eyes sparkled, making Bajie's heart flutter.
Bajie chuckled, dropped the reins, stepped forward, bowed, and said, "Mother, actually, all four of us, master and disciples, have the desire to marry into the family, but I'm the only one who's embarrassed. As the saying goes, 'Monks are lustful ghosts.' Everyone wants to avoid this, but Master is too shy to agree right now; please come back to the outer hall, and let Master decide whether to marry you and your three daughters."
The woman's expression instantly shifted between light and dark. Bajie thought to himself, "Something's definitely fishy. Even I, Old Pig, am so surprised to hear my master is interested!"
The widow smiled again, "Since the marriage is settled, go and discuss it with your master. If it's not too awkward, I'll ask the four elders to take pity on my family." Though she spoke with a smile, Bajie could clearly see the reproach in her eyes!
He dismissed the widow, secretly sneering, and returned to the front hall. Wukong, seeing his expression, exclaimed happily, "Here you are! Junior brother, you must have noticed something too. Have these 'demons' fallen for your trap?"
Zhu Bajie laughed, "That woman is completely inside his shell! If it weren't for your discerning eyes, Master would have suffered countless hardships!" He then pulled out four black pills, about the size of grape seeds, and continued, "These demons are powerful. If Master can help, we must give them these."
The Great Sage asked, "Please enlighten me, junior brother ."
Zhu Bajie laughed, "This is called 'Golden Immortal's Fall.' Whether they are Great Golden Immortals or Rakshasa Demonesses, just one pill will completely destroy their internal energy and body within four hours, leaving them as mortal as before. Then, they will be consumed by Yin Fire, single-mindedly seeking Yin and Yang union, without any shame." "The difference between honor and disgrace is like that of a wanton woman. Moreover, it is colorless, odorless, and leaves no trace. To subdue such vixens, nothing is more necessary than this pill!"
Wukong and Sha Wujing clapped their hands and laughed, "Truly a miraculous medicine!"
Sha Wujing, not to be outdone, took out seven pairs of exquisite little golden rings and said, "This humble monk, in my mortal life, was fortunate enough to be married to a fairy maiden. Later, I attained immortality and became a Curtain-Rolling General. After taking office, I learned that my wife actually had six sisters. Envious of the blissful sexual relationship between my wife and me, they couldn't help but seek pleasure with this humble monk. Fortunately, this humble monk is also skilled in the arts of seduction, the art of sexual intercourse, and the art of the indestructible golden spear, so I was able to handle them..."
At this point, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie cheered, "Old Sha Wujing, you're truly amazing! Those seven fairy maidens are notorious sluts in Heaven, yet you subdued them all with a single blow!"
Sha Wujing, with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow, sighed and continued, "...But indulging in lust every night also has its harms; back then, before the Peach Banquet, during the battle with the Seven Fairies, I accidentally ejaculated several times, which left me exhausted and causing me to accidentally break a glass cup, resulting in my banishment to the mortal realm. The Seven Fairies, unwilling to let me go, gave me seven pairs of golden rings, saying that if I encountered any difficulties with women on earth, they would be miraculously effective. Today's situation is precisely the time for this treasure to shine."
Tang Sanzang felt uneasy and restless, but upon hearing that his disciples each possessed unique skills and magical treasures, although he didn't understand what the Xuan Su and Golden Spear were, he felt more at ease.
After a while, the beautiful and refined maidservant carried a tea tray with golden cups and jade pots, filled with eight cups of fragrant tea. A fragrant breeze followed, and the widow led her three daughters out,
each with delicate eyebrows and rosy cheeks. They were all alluring and captivating, their graceful figures enchanting.
Their floral hairpins revealed their charming beauty, and their embroidered ribbons fluttered, making them seem otherworldly. A cherry blossom blooms half-closed in a smile, a fragrance of orchids and musk wafts with each slow step. Her head is adorned with countless jeweled hairpins, trembling gently; her body exudes a delicate fragrance, her delicate figure adorned with fine gold threads and floral patterns. What talk of the beauty of a Chu maiden, or the allure of Xi Shi? Truly, she is a celestial maiden descended from the heavens, Chang'e emerging from the moon's cold
palace. Mother and daughters stand in a row, each possessing unparalleled beauty and charm: the eldest daughter, Zhenzhen, is elegant and dignified; the second daughter, Ai'ai, is radiant and captivating; the third daughter, Lianlian, is lively and pure; and the beautiful widow, meticulously dressed, is even more
stunning. In the open-minded Tang Dynasty, all four women are dressed in revealing outfits, their shoulders bare and their breasts plunging. The widow alone was already captivating, but now, with four cleavages and eight snowballs before her, even Tang Sanzang blushes; the three disciples, harboring ulterior motives, stare intently, their lustful thoughts churning, their audacity running rampant.
The pilgrim thought to himself, "Indeed, it's the power of a celestial being! Such alluring transformations! Mortals would never pass this test, but these are true immortals who have attained enlightenment. Using this pretext to test us, they reveal such lewd forms, showing that none of us have extinguished our worldly desires. It's perfect that the Great Sage is here; I'll punish you on behalf of the Jade Emperor and Buddha!"
Earlier, the pilgrim had used his ability to create clones, using the others as a cover, while his true self took the "Golden Immortal's Elixir," transforming into a tiny insect and secretly placing it in the tea of the mother and her three daughters. He then transformed back into his true form. Remarkably, his mastery of transformations was so great that the four Buddhas and immortals, with their discerning eyes, failed to notice. This was their destiny, the beginning of their treacherous scheme!
After everyone had exchanged greetings and drunk tea, the widow said, "Would the four elders consider which of these four be a suitable match for my daughter?"
Wujing bowed and replied, "We have already discussed it. All four of us will take in sons-in-law. According to seniority, our eldest brother, Sun Wukong, will marry our eldest daughter; our second brother, Zhu Wuneng, will marry our second daughter; and this humble monk, being the youngest, will marry our third daughter. As for our master, he will be an elder and marry our wife. Today is an auspicious day, and we four have dared to propose..." " Why not hasten the marriage and consummate the marriage tonight..."
Before he could finish speaking, the four women, mother and daughters, turned ashen-faced. Upon hearing the words "consumer chamber," the second woman, Ai'ai, immediately lashed out, her eyebrows furrowing as she shouted, "You wretched creatures! The Buddha himself decreed that the pilgrims would transmit the supreme Mahayana Buddhist scriptures, out of compassion and to save all sentient beings. This humble monk and his companions descended to the mortal realm to enlighten you, yet you have so easily succumbed to lust and greed, disregarding the Buddha's teachings!" "How could they be so disrespectful and immoral? What crime should they be punished for this?"
Upon hearing this, Tang Sanzang broke out in a cold sweat: "My disciples! Could it be that you have mocked your master and offended the Bodhisattva?"
Sun Wukong pulled the golden cudgel from his ear, which swung in the wind and became as thick as a bowl. He sternly said to the four women, "Master, don't listen to her! These wicked demons are so audacious, daring to impersonate the Bodhisattva! Do you remember that corpse demon who could change his appearance so many times? Didn't he trick you into driving me away, Master?"
Zhu Bajie also said, "Master, don't be alarmed..." "If they are true Bodhisattvas, they will surely manifest their Dharma body and reveal their true nature; if they transform into mortals, our eldest brother can crush them with his staff and turn them into a pile of mangled flesh!"
Sha Wujing said in unison, "These demons are trying to deceive us! If they have the guts, let's fight them for real. If they continue to use the names of Buddhist saints, watch out for my 'precious staff'! ...Pfft!"
The three of them pretended to be angry, their brows furrowed, and almost burst out laughing at the thought that the aphrodisiac had been administered and their scheme had succeeded.
The three women's eyes blazed with fire, and their slender hands formed a hand seal. A whistling sound and a fragrant breeze arose, and they shouted in a sweet voice, "You are not human! You are not human! This humble monk, Samantabhadra, will act on behalf of Heaven today and kill you on the spot, so that the World-Honored One, Tathagata, may find another pilgrim!" After they finished speaking, a strong wind arose and thunder roared, creating an astonishing spectacle.
Sha Wujing exclaimed in surprise, "Second Brother, this pill of yours works so quickly! Aren't we brothers being too hasty?"
Zhu Bajie stammered, "This...this..."
In the blink of an eye, the mother and her three daughters shed their mortal attire. The eldest daughter, Zhenzhen, was dressed in pure and holy white, and was none other than Guanyin Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and Salvation; the second daughter, with her open robe and bare chest, her compassionate eyes filled with majesty, was Manjushri Bodhisattva; the third daughter, with her bare upper body and a jeweled belt draped diagonally, was Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. The widow, however, transformed into a figure dressed in black robes. Sun Wukong, with his vast knowledge, recognized her as the ancient female immortal, the Old Mother of Lishan.
In the blink of an eye, Sun Wukong chuckled coldly, slammed his Ruyi Jingu Bang on the ground, producing a clanging sound of metal striking metal. In an instant, the thunder and lightning ceased to sound like cicadas in spring, and the wind vanished completely. The four Buddhas and immortals were greatly surprised. They immediately realized that although their thoughts were stirred, their mortal bodies remained. Despite their boundless magical power, they could not escape their physical form and were no different from ordinary people.
