【The Swallow's Letter】 (One of the Ten Forbidden Books of the Ming and Qing Dynasties)

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
Chapter One: Farewell to My Teacher, Arriving in the
Capital for the Examination, Presenting a Gift to My Good Friend - Ink Painting of Guanyin A talented scholar from Fufeng, a descendant of Yao the Conqueror, surnamed Huo, from Duliang. He took a friend to Chang'an to take the examination, but the examination was still far off, so he sought pleasure and temporarily
passed through Pingkang. With his brush, he listened to the orioles and butterflies, and painted a portrait of Yunniang.
Unexpectedly, a noblewoman, just like a courtesan, was there. She was beautiful and graceful. He wrote poems about her spring beauty, which were carried by swallows.
However, his peers plotted against him, and he changed his name and decided to serve the king. Two beauties, a unicorn in the high pavilion, a top scholar on horseback.
—Han Palace Spring
In the world, only marriage is determined by heaven, and cannot be controlled by man. Some marriages are arranged by matchmakers, while others
begin separately but end in perfect match. There are also those who choose their spouses with high standards, and those who are destined to be together.
And then there are those whose red leaves and flowing water eventually weave a silken basket, whose cotton robes and inscribed poems ultimately lead to marriage. From ancient times to the present,
countless examples exist, but the union of talented men and beautiful women is the most difficult, often involving countless separations and reunions, joys and sorrows, and endless gossip and disputes before they can finally be together. In short,
their names must be recorded in the marriage register of the Old Man Under the Moon; though they may face some obstacles, their union is ultimately perfect. Therefore, I say, "Marriage is
ultimately determined by Heaven, and cannot be changed by human intervention." But enough of this digression; let me tell you a most extraordinary story
.
During the reign of Emperor Yuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, there was a talented man named Huo Duliang, courtesy name Xiufu, from Maoling, Fufeng.
He was a descendant of Yao Shi, and had recently come to live in Xijing. He was as handsome as Pan An, as talented as Ban Gu and Ma Chao, elegant and refined,
and full of literary talent. He was not only skilled in poetry and prose but also in painting. However, his parents had died early, and he had no family, drifting aimlessly in a foreign land.
Fortunately, I was fortunate to have the company of Mr. Ren Guangwen, whose surname was Qin and given name was Ruoshui. He was a senior and experienced gentleman who had been friends with the Huo family for generations
. Because he admired Huo's talent and learning, he invited me to study at his residence. We talked day and night and got along very well.
One day, Huo was sitting alone in his study when he suddenly sighed. He said, "I am deeply grateful to Mr. Qin for treating me like a national hero .
But thinking of my current situation, I am all alone and helpless, which makes me feel very lonely. I don't know when I will be able to realize my lofty ambitions and enjoy the
pleasure of flying high, so that I can finally settle down. Now, in the spring, the scenery is so beautiful. I can't go to the countryside to play, so I'll just
stroll around the ponds and gardens around the academy to pass the time. Look: the plum blossoms are reflected in the pond, and the reeds on the bank are carpeted with grass. Winter has just passed,
and the bright sunshine is here again. It is indeed a different scene. I often think of Pan Anren's handsome face, and whenever women go out to play..." The woman saw him and
threw fruit all over his carriage. By chance, on the Lantern Festival, he met a beautiful woman who gave him a golden sparrow, and they were
thus betrothed. Later, they lived in Heyang, a place called Huaxian, and their fame has lasted for ages. "I, Huo Duliang, though talented, have not achieved fame or fortune, nor have I been betrothed to a lover. Why is my fate so unfortunate?"
Just as he was lamenting this, a gatekeeper from the school approached him, holding a letter .
The gatekeeper said to Huo Sheng, "This letter was sent by Master Xianyu. He says that Chang'an is recruiting talents this year, and he has already set off and is waiting for you at an inn along the way
." He then handed the letter to him.
Huo Sheng took it, unsealed it, and silently read it aloud, saying, "Since Master Xianyu has already left, I will pack my things
and catch up with him sooner or later. It would be best if I could go with him." The gatekeeper said, "I am very grateful for your kindness, sir, but I have something I
cannot say." Huo Sheng said, "Please speak freely." The gatekeeper said, "I think Master Xianyu is not as good a person as you,
sir. He is shifty-eyed and not a sincere man. Moreover, he is involved in brothels and doesn't realize how easily he might be corrupted.
It would be better if we went our separate ways." Huo Sheng... He said, "Thank you for your kindness. However, I have been his classmate for a long time, so it is not
a problem for us to work together for the time being. After I pass the imperial examination, I will naturally distinguish right from wrong and not let him influence me. Please ask Master Qin to come out so that I can say goodbye in person . It will be
fine for you to leave tomorrow morning." The gatekeeper then relayed the message inside. Upon hearing this, Master Qin said, "I was informed today that I have been promoted to magistrate of Qianyang County.
Due to the requirements of my academic qualifications, I have taken up my post. I am about to bid farewell to my student Huo Xiufu. May I ask what you have to say to him?"
When Huo Xiufu saw his teacher come out, he bowed and left. Master Qin returned the bow. Huo Sheng said, "I have been deeply grateful for your instruction over the years. Today,
a classmate wrote to me saying that the examination is approaching and we have agreed to take it together. I have specially asked you to come out and say goodbye, so I can depart tomorrow morning."
Instructor Qin said, "I see, how wonderful! You are a man of great talent and learning, a peerless scholar. You will surely excel in the imperial examination.
I heard today that I have been promoted to Qianyang and am currently preparing for my new post. I have some small gifts to offer as a farewell gift.
I will offer my congratulations again when you pass the examination!" He told the attendant to bring the gifts and give them to the instructor.
Huo Sheng took them and said, "Thank you for your trouble, teacher." Then he bowed and left. Instructor Qin said, "It is nothing.
I hope you will achieve great success in your new position and live up to my expectations." Huo Sheng said, "I am of meager talent and
fear I cannot fulfill your wishes. My books and sword case are all ready. I bid you farewell now and hope you can depart tomorrow morning." He then took his leave.
Qin Xueguan said, "I won't personally see you off tomorrow morning. Take care on your journey." Huo Sheng replied, "Thank you for your instruction.
Please return, teacher." They then went to their respective rooms, preparing to depart the next morning. It was truly a scene of idyllic beauty: "
The jade pot of spring wine is just right to carry, a country inn and mountain bridge bid farewell to the horse's hooves;
from now on, we'll gaze at the bright moon over Chang'an, the flowing water of the Longtou River swallowing our thoughts east and west."
But let's leave aside the story of Huo Sheng bidding farewell to his teacher and going to his appointment. Now, let 's talk about
the Minister of Rites, named Li Andao. He was originally a scholar who had passed the imperial examinations and now held this position. He was upright and impartial. His wife, Madam Bao, was
virtuous and gentle, and had only one daughter named Feiyun. Feiyun was virtuous and beautiful, skilled in needlework and calligraphy, and proficient in literature, poetry, and prose.
However, she was childless in her old age, which was a slight disappointment. That day, after returning from court, with nothing to do at the office, he wanted to spend some time in the garden under the flowers.
He instructed the servants to quickly invite his wife and daughter out.
A messenger entered the courtyard and reported this. The lady and young lady were seen entering the hall together. After the greetings were exchanged, Minister Li said, "Madam
, daughter, I am over sixty, my teeth and hair are thinning. In my official career, I should be content and avoid trouble. But I have repeatedly
petitioned to retire, yet His Majesty has always refused. What should I do?" The lady said, "Sir, the country is currently facing many troubles,
and you are not yet old. You must dedicate yourself to public service; how can you seek personal gain?" Minister Li said, "Madam's words are
reasonable." Feiyun said, "I see this beautiful spring day, and Father is enjoying his leisure time after his meal..." "Today, I've prepared a cup of spring wine to
celebrate Mother's birthday." Minister Li said, "You're too kind to me."
They then took their seats, and the young lady personally served the wine. Minister Li drank a few cups, and, emboldened by the wine, said, "I passed the imperial examinations at a young age
and received many imperial favors. Now I am old and frail, and I often wish to retire and return home to pay respects to my ancestors, sweep their graves, and hold
daily banquets for my relatives and clansmen to comfort my aging heart. But alas, An Lushan has plotted rebellion in Hanyang, and I cannot escape." His wife said, "
My lord! We are a loving and devoted couple, relying on each other. Don't let the lack of an heir cause you sorrow." She then pointed to Feiyun Xiao...
The elder sister said, "A girl who is knowledgeable and courteous is truly a gem among women. She will find a good husband and live a joyful life." Upon hearing this, Feiyun
bowed again and said, "I only wish for my parents' good health, and I am willing to serve them for life. Why must we be bound by marriage, which only creates more barriers
between families?"
As they were chatting, drinking, and admiring the flowers and plum blossoms, a drum was sounded outside, announcing, "The Military Governor of Tianxiong Army, Master Jia , a fellow
scholar, has sent a messenger with a letter, and is waiting outside." Minister Li ordered, "Bring it in." The gatekeeper brought it in on a rotating drum
, and the servant took it, saying, "Reporting to Your Excellency, the letter is here."
Minister Li took the letter, opened it, understood it clearly, and then addressed his wife and daughter. He said, "This is my fellow townsman,
Jia Gong, the military governor of Tianxiong, named Nan Zhong. We are very close, like brothers. He sent this to inquire after us. But there are too
many gifts; how can we accept them all?" The lady said, "His intentions are far-reaching; accepting one or two items would be more appropriate."
After reviewing the gift list, the Minister hesitated for a moment before saying, "Very well, accept Wu Daozi's 'Ink Guanyin' painting!
Bring it here to look at." The painting was quickly unfolded, and the Minister carefully examined it, saying, "This painting is indeed an authentic work by Wu Daozi; it's
a rare find these days." The young lady, observing from the side, said, "Give this painting to my child for offerings." Minister Li said:
"Very well." He then instructed the servant, "You may take this painting, mount it neatly, and give it to the young lady for her enjoyment." The servant replied,
"Understood. Sir, the official in charge of mounting this painting is Miao Jiling; his mounting skills are excellent. Send it to him for mounting." The Minister said,
"That's up to you. You can tell Master Jia's messenger to pick up the letter tomorrow." The servant responded, "Understood." Minister
Li said, "There are matters to attend to at the yamen tomorrow; rest early. Let's go back to the residence together." Because of this painting, many things arose; let's hear the next chapter for the details. (Chapter Two: While waiting for the performance, he found shelter in an inn, plotted rebellion, and went hunting
.) Xianyu Ji waited for Huo Sheng on the way, pacing back and forth at the shop entrance, muttering, "Why did I ask Huo Xiufu to accompany me? I planned to have him do the exam for me if I didn't pass; he's my savior. I remember when we were classmates, he was intelligent and diligent, always with a book in his hand, which is why he's so learned. But when I pick up a book, I feel sleepy; away from the study, I'm exceptionally energetic. What's the reason for this?" He then thought, "I'm proficient in everything else; it's impossible for someone to fool or deceive me. Only when it comes to literature do I become so muddled. Besides, my family is quite wealthy; we have plenty of money for oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, firewood, rice, tea, and other necessities ." "I have everything. But as for literary talent, I have absolutely none—not even a trace of 'zhi, hu, ye, zhe, yi, yan, zai.' So it's one thing to be unrefined, but I still crave a false reputation. Every time I enter the examination hall, I boast to others, 'I'm clearly the top scholar.' Only I know this. The grand examination is approaching this year, and the other day I asked my friend Dou to invite my classmate Huo Xiufu to take the exam together. He's exceptionally talented, honest, and easy to manipulate. I figured I'd need his corrections during the exam, and if I asked him to write for me, he wouldn't refuse. I thought he'd be here now." Looking up, he saw a sword-wielding man riding swiftly towards him. Upon reaching him, he saw Xianyu Ji, dismounted, and they bowed to each other. Xian Sheng said, "Brother Huo, you've arrived! What a joy! I sent you a letter yesterday, I imagine it has arrived. I've been waiting here for you." Huo Sheng replied, "I am very grateful for your invitation the other day, but I had to part ways with Mr. Qin at the academy, hence my late arrival. I apologize!" Xian Sheng said, "The weather is fine today, perfect for a journey. Please, please!" Huo Sheng said, "I'm being presumptuous." The two walked along ancient paths lined with weeping willows, across long bridges spanning the riverbanks; they slept by the water and ate in the wind, traveling by day and resting by night, and before they knew it, they had arrived in Chang'an. They entered the city gate and wandered through the streets and alleys. Xian Sheng said, "This is the entrance to the innkeeper's shop, Xiang Nianyao. Be careful , let's stay at his place." Huo Sheng said, "Sure. Where is the innkeeper?" The innkeeper came out and said, "So it 's you two gentlemen. Please come in and have a seat." The two went into the inn and exchanged greetings. Xian Sheng said to the shopkeeper, "It's been several years, but you're still so robust . You don't look like a seventy-year-old man." The shopkeeper replied, "Of course, of course. Both of you gentlemen look quite different from usual. You must have both achieved great success today. However, there's one thing: the examination has been moved to the beginning of April." Huo Sheng asked , "What's the reason for this?" The shopkeeper said, "Because of news of An Lushan's rebellion, there are matters at court, so the examination has been postponed." Xian Yu Ji said to Huo Sheng, "In that case, we've come a bit early. How about we go to my house and come back later?" The shopkeeper said, "The matter of fame and fortune is not something that can be turned back on. Just stay at my humble abode for a month or two; it won't be hard to pass." Xian Sheng said, "That makes sense. But living in these few rooms, facing people saying 'Confucius said,' it's not enough. It would be better to go to some interesting places and have some fun ." Huo Sheng laughed. Xianyu Ji said, "What's with the laughter, brother? Are you laughing at me for wanting to linger so soon after arriving, so restless?" Huo Sheng replied, "I'm not laughing at you, brother. I have something on my mind." Xianyu Ji said, "Brother , I guessed it." He then whispered in Huo Sheng's ear, "Is it this person?" Huo Sheng laughed loudly, "I can't hide it from you anymore. Innkeeper, tell me, is Hua Xingyun, the lady I met here years ago, doing well at home?" Innkeeper Yao replied , "I heard that since Yunniang parted from her husband, she has only wanted to be with him, and now she doesn't keep guests very much." Upon hearing this , Huo Sheng recited, "A gentle breeze and fine rain moisten the plum blossoms, I ride past the house of Biyu first." We'll leave aside the scene of Xianyu Ji and Huo Sheng waiting in the inn. Meanwhile, An Lushan, now the military governor of Fanyang, is a man of unusual birth, who abuses the emperor's favor, hoards grain and supplies, and privately raises iron cavalry. All the towns under his control and those who were coerced by him, in principle, the court treated him with great respect; as for himself, he was already extremely wealthy and powerful, and should have known when to advance and retreat. But he was restless and harbored delusions, saying, "That old man Yang Guozhong, along with his cronies like Daxi Xun, constantly slanders us in court, saying we are treacherous and must harbor rebellious intentions. Thinking it over carefully, we are on the border while they are inside; they can't possibly escape this dog-headed scheme. Therefore, I've mustered my troops and marched straight for Chang'an. See how the prefectures and counties we pass through crumble at the mere sight of us! Recently, I sent He Qiannian and Gao Yao, under the pretense of presenting a skilled archer , to kidnap Yang Guanghui, and then we captured Taiyuan. We'll have to rest for a few days, and then we'll cross the river soon. That's all in the bag . Today the weather is fine; soldiers, go and hunt on the sandy ground outside the tent." Hearing this, the soldiers dared not delay, setting up the hunting ground, shouting and cheering, and setting off a hunt for rabbits on the grassy slope. Some released dogs, and others...

Eagles and arrows flew, fluttering and swirling, a chaotic hunt yielding many game. A soldier stepped forward and said, "Your Majesty
, may we rest for a while, allowing our men and horses to recuperate?" An Lushan replied, "Of course, of course."
Lushan sat on a felt mat, ordering female musicians to play music and serve wine. Beautiful women served wine, played the pipa, sang, and
danced, their skirts fluttering, the music tinkling. After drinking heartily for a while, as night fell, he ordered a retreat.
It was truly a scene of chaos:
Clouds drifted across the desert near Yuyang, the ancient battlefield of Chiyou;
swift steeds returned, saddles adorned with two rabbits, bows still drawn, shooting yellow sheep.
Lushan's intention to invade Chang'an was temporarily suppressed. As for the story of Xingyun, we must wait for the next chapter.
Chapter Three: Old Acquaintances Exchange Gifts, Scholars Meet Again, Writing a Gift of Spring Beauty
. It is said that in Chang'an, there was a courtesan named Hua, nicknamed Xingyun, who was elegant and beautiful, a natural beauty, truly a leader among courtesans,
a champion of the Pingkang. Although of humble origins, I am by no means frivolous. I often harbor thoughts of reforming myself, but having not yet met a worthy companion,
I dare not act rashly. Since meeting the talented scholar Huo Xiufu of Maoling two years ago, I have had some prior acquaintance with him. However, due to our initial meeting, I hesitated to speak
openly, also harboring a sense of superficiality and not daring to delve too deeply. Fortunately, I am now taking the imperial examinations again. Since the examinations are still far off, I have been sent to the capital. Xingyun has invited me
to stay with him temporarily so that I can study. He said, "Look at Huo Lang, so intelligent and talented, so sincere. I
secretly wish to entrust my life to him. Today, the rain has just stopped, the flowers in the vase are fragrant, the windows are bright and the table is clean—it's quite delightful. I can't help but invite Huo Lang out for
a chat. Mr. Huo, please come in!"
Upon hearing this, Huo Sheng turned and went out of the painted pavilion. He saw Xingyun and said, "I am deeply grateful for your hospitality!" Xingyun said,
"What are you saying, Huo Lang? But this humble alley and thatched cottage are probably not a place for someone like you who appreciates flowers." Huo Sheng smiled and said,
"I don't care about any other flowers, but this one flower that understands me—even if I searched all over Qujiang, I wouldn't find it anywhere." Xingyun smiled.
Huo Sheng glanced at the table and asked, "Yunniang, what kind of painting is this handscroll on the table?" Xingyun replied, "
I borrowed it from a neighbor's daughter; it's a scroll titled 'Zhaojun Mounting a Horse.'" Huo Sheng unfolded it and said, "Indeed, it's beautifully painted.
Yunniang, I see your exceptional beauty; you and Zhaojun in this painting look exactly alike, with no difference whatsoever." Xingyun said,
"They are not alike in any way, except that she was destined for a life of hardship, ending up in a brothel, just like her tragic fate of leaving the border!"
After saying this, she couldn't help but feel sad. Huo Sheng said, "Yunniang, don't worry. I've always known a little about painting
. Look, today the orioles are singing in the trees, and butterflies are flitting over the walls; the scenery is truly picturesque. I'll paint you a picture of 'Listening to the Orioles and Catching Butterflies
,' depicting a joyful scene, so you won't be saddened by the sight of tears. What do you say?" Xingyun said,
"I've long heard of Huo Lang's exquisite painting skills, but I am of humble birth and unworthy to trouble you with your brush." Huo Sheng said, "Of course."
He then spread the silk on the table, mixed the colors, and took the brush, saying, "Yunniang, let me take a closer look at you before I begin
." He looked at you from head to toe, painting as he went, and then said, "Why is that little red spot on your cheek? It
truly is a face like a peach blossom."
Upon hearing this, Xingyun quickly took a mirror to look at herself, and then looked at the painting, saying, "It truly is a perfect likeness." Huo Sheng said:
"Your appearance is beautiful enough, but how can I possibly
capture that natural charm—the smile that lingers, the frown that hides her emotions, the indifference that lingers—in a painting?" He compared the painting with the "Zhaojun" portrait again, laughing, "Zhaojun, Zhaojun! I told you
Yunniang wouldn't allow it. How could I possibly imitate Mao Yanshou, adding a black mole to ruin your beautiful face?" Xingyun rose to thank him, but
Huo Sheng stopped her. Xingyun said, "My intention is that Huo Lang also paint my own image on it; that would be more interesting.
" Huo Sheng said, "That's fine. But I am a mortal demon; how dare I be placed alongside a celestial being? I would be
terrified! Very well, while the rouge and powder remain, let's not embarrass ourselves!" He then picked up his brush,
looked at his reflection in the pond, and then at his reflection in the mirror before putting brush to paper. In a short while, the painting was finished. Xingyun examined him carefully and said, "You are
indeed handsome and charming, but your literary talent is something even you yourself cannot describe. Huo Lang! Not only are your literary skills unparalleled, but your painting skills are also unmatched.
Where in the world can you find such a talented man? Rare indeed!" Just
as the two were enjoying themselves, Xianyu Ji suddenly decided to visit Huo Sheng. He said, "I haven't been feeling well these past few days and
haven't had a chance to visit Brother Huo. Today I must go and see him, to spend some time with him and offer my assistance. It's only now, around the time of the entrance exam, that I've finally arrived
. You see, after all the twists and turns, I've already reached the top of the Huaxing Hall." He knocked on the door and went in, saying to Huo Sheng, "These past few
days I've been staying at my lodgings, feeling a little unwell, and haven't been able to visit you and Yunniang as often as I'd like. I apologize for my neglect." Huo Sheng said:
"I've been a little unwell, hence my absence from greeting Brother Xianyu," said Xianyu Ji. "I know about your illness, brother." He then
whispered in his ear and chuckled, "Is that so?" Huo Sheng also laughed, "Don't tease me." Xianyu Ji
noticed the painting on the table and asked, "Who painted this?" Huo Sheng replied, "To tell you the truth, I made it up."
Xianyu Ji examined it closely and laughed, "So it's you two, the old folks passing down their legacy to their descendants. How did
you manage to look so alike? You've even pasted the painting onto your own faces." Huo Sheng asked, "What do you mean by that?" Xianyu Ji said, "I've always
avoided getting close to Yunniang, lest you be a little jealous. Today, I've taken a little advantage of her through the painting, please don't be offended! Please don't be offended!"
Huo Sheng smiled. Xianyu Ji said, "Yunniang, I have something else to say to you. Such a fine painting must not
be ruined by its mounting. That drunkard Miao, the gatekeeper of the Imperial Examination Hall, is extremely skilled. He promised the Ministry of Rites that someone should send it to
him for mounting." Xingyun said, "I will certainly obey your command." Xianyu Ji said, "Today, I'm going to have
a few drinks. Yunniang, please make an exception and sing a very heart-wrenching song so that Brother Huo and everyone can have some fun." Xingyun
said, "Please come to the warm pavilion for a drink." Xianyu Ji added, "Brother Huo! From now on, you and Yunniang shouldn't call each other anything
, just call it 'that painting.'" Huo Sheng said, "Don't tease me." The three of them drank until the night watchman's watch before returning
home.
It is truly:
Clouds yearn for her clothes, flowers for her face; a beautiful woman's painting leads the spring breeze.
The warbling oriole cleverly conceals her, the infatuated butterfly deeply pierces the winding thicket.
This one painting alone has given rise to many events; let's hear the next chapter for the rest.
Chapter Four: Clerk Zang Explains Examination Abuses; The Drunken Old Woman Causes a Scene
. It is said that in Chang'an there was a clerk named Zang Butui. He said, "All the numbered and copied examination papers are in my
care. Every year, people come to bribe me, and I have to do one or two favors, hence my growing number of clients. Last year, a man from Maoling..."
Xianyu's friend came to ask me to do something for him, but due to unfavorable circumstances, I couldn't help him. Who knew there would be such a kind person,
who wouldn't ask for a single penny? I wonder if this person has arrived this year? If he has, I must go and see him; perhaps he will ask me for help again
." It was truly a case of:
sitting at home, money falling from the sky.
Old Zang was just wondering when, unexpectedly, Xianyu Ji came to visit. He said, "This is Old Zang's door; let me knock
." He asked, "Is anyone home?" Zang Bu Tui, hearing this, opened the door and saw it was Xianyu Ji. He bowed and said:
"I was just thinking of you, brother. I was ashamed of my shortcomings in the past, and yet I have received such a generous gift. How can I possibly accept it?" Xianyu
Ji said, "These are small tokens, no need to mention them. As the saying goes, 'If you have the heart to pay New Year's greetings, it's never too late, even on
the Dragon Boat Festival.' This year, I must trouble you, brother, to devise a plan that is absolutely certain."
Zang Butui frowned and said, "I've got it. I think that acting as a messenger might not be a matter of chance. This year,
the security is tight, and not a single word or detail can be leaked. There is only one plan: I have already compiled these numbers.
When I go out, I will carefully inquire about the friend whose Chinese characters are excellent, and find out his number.
I will secretly infiltrate and change the numbers on both families' papers, just like writing an article for you, without leaving a trace
. This is a plan that is absolutely certain to succeed. What do you think? What do you think?" Xianyu Ji said, "That would be excellent." He then stepped forward to thank him and said:
"My family has amassed a fortune, hoping only to wear an official hat. If I can achieve fame and success, I will never forget your great kindness." He said, "Now I'm
giving you five hundred taels of silver, and once you're on the list, I'll give you double." Zang Butui happily said, "Just one thing:
after you succeed in the imperial examination and become an official, you must allow me to take a few more lucrative bribes. Don't be like Zhang Zhi then, or everything will fall into place."
Xianyu Ji said, "What are you talking about! Let's go to the tavern and have a good drink, then we can discuss it later." Let's leave aside their
two schemes and cheating for now.
Now, let's talk about Miao the mounter, whose real name is Ji Ling. He said, "Because I usually enjoy a few drinks, everyone calls me Miao
the Drunkard. I'm also good at business and my sales are booming. Since I'm an official in the Ministry of Rites, I often have to go and deal with things there. Recently,
Lord Li of the Ministry of Rites sent me a painting of Guanyin in ink by Wu Daozi, and then a certain Mr. Huo personally delivered
a painting of Spring Beauty. The workmanship was doubled, and he instructed me to take good care of mounting it." After saying this, he looked at the wall and said:
"Both of these are completely dry. The weather is fine today, so we'll take them down and put the rollers back on, lest they come and bother us. Mother
, quickly get the paste basin and the brush!"
Upon hearing this, his wife came over and said, "Old man, the paste basin and brush are right here." Miao Jiling said, "Mother,
there are one or two important customers who need your help to finish their business, so they won't come and bother us. Come
here, come here!" So she took a stool, helped the old man, and peeled the painting down. He said, "This is a painting of
spring beauty sent by Master Huo," and then lifted up a Guanyin image, saying, "It's from the Li family. Let me sprinkle some cloud incense powder inside
; it's to ward off bookworms."
Just then, the old woman brought wine and meat, saying, "Old man, I know your name. After you finish mounting, you'll need a few cups of
strong liquor." Miao Jiling happily said, "This is perfect. Old man, you've worked so hard; you should have a few drinks
to loosen your muscles." The old woman then poured the wine, urged her husband to drink, and stuffed several slices of meat into his mouth, saying,
"It's roasted mutton; eat a few more pieces." Drinking and drinking, he unknowingly became drunk. He said, "I'm drunk, let's go to sleep
." Miao Biaobei said, "How can I go to sleep in broad daylight?"
The old woman was just grabbing the drunkard and arguing when a servant from the Ministry of Rites came over and said, "This is Miao the Drunkard's shop
. Is anyone inside?" Miao Biaobei asked in surprise, "Who is it?" The servant said, "I'm from the Ministry of Rites
, the magistrate, to make you an official." Miao Biaobei opened the door, drunk. The servant said, "We've come for nothing else.
This year, with the imperial examinations, we need to decorate the houses again. The magistrate wants you to collect the money and provisions so that everyone can get to work quickly."
Miao Jiling said, "How troublesome, what bad luck! I haven't even done many business deals this spring, and now I have to become an official."
The servants said, "No way. You're the head of the trade, why are you pretending to be stupid?" Then they dragged him away.
The drunkard, Miao, said to his wife, "I'll go to the yamen and come back as soon as I see them. There are two paintings on this table. One is a
Guanyin painting by Lord Li of the main hall, and the other is a Spring Scene painting brought by Lord Huo of Maoling. If he comes to ask for them, I'll give them
to him." Miao's wife said, "Go, go, I know! Can't you even get rid of these few things?" She watched as her husband
left with the servants. Miao's wife said, "How disappointing! I was just enjoying my meal and wanted to chat with my husband, but
now he's asking me to be an official again. An official for your mother! An official for your grandmother! There's still half a pot left here; I might as well finish it all
." So she started drinking from the pot, swallowing loudly. Suddenly, she heard someone knocking at the door. Thinking it was her husband,
she opened it, hugged him tightly, and cried out, "My dearest old man! You've come at the perfect time! My drinking mood
has kicked in. Let's go to sleep, and stop pretending!"
The woman in the courtyard spat and said, "This old woman has gone mad! Open your eyes and see who your husband is! I'm
here to pick up the painting from Master Li's office. Where is your husband? I sent him the Guanyin image to be framed a long time ago. Miss wants to worship it and
is urging me to bring it to her quickly!" Old Woman Miao pointed to the table and said, "The painting is right here, isn't it? Even if you're not
my husband, let's have a couple of drinks and have some fun, what's wrong with that?" The woman in the courtyard said, "What are you talking about! A woman
, drunk like this." She picked up the painting and left.
Granny Miao got up, still looking outside, and said, "Pah! So this is how clueless people are, with such hot wine
." Then she turned her head and took a few steps, saying, "Am I, with my good looks, some kind of scoundrel? What bad luck,
what bad luck!" She looked at the table and said, "So the painting was taken. Why did they take the one without the bag? This one
with the bag is left here; it must belong to the Huo family. Let's take it inside and wait for them to come and collect it, then give it to them."
It is just as the old woman is:
Old lady, shrewd for a thousand years, old woman, still charming in her old age.
If not for a mistake in painting, how could the lovers have become lovers in two places?
The courtyard took the painting; since it was a mistake, I wonder if it will be returned? Let's hear the next chapter to find out.
???????????????? Chapter 5: The Mistakenly Taken Painting, Startled Face Like a Gift of Poems
, Let the Swallows Carry It. It is said that Miss Feiyun remembered the image of Guanyin and called Meixiang: "The painting that Master gave me to worship the other day..."
"The Guanyin image hasn't been delivered to the courtyard for a long time. I suppose it hasn't been framed yet? Could you urge him to do so? The Buddha's Birthday is
approaching, and I want to hang it in the small pavilion for daily worship." Meixiang said, "I know. Where is the old courtyard master?" The old courtyard master came over, and
Meixiang said, "Miss asked me to ask you. Yesterday, Master instructed you to frame the Guanyin image. Is it finished? It's
about to be enshrined!" The courtyard master said, "It's already framed and is here. I was just about to hand it over to Miss. Please take it in." Meixiang
took it and said, "I know." Then she told Miss that the painting had been brought. The young lady said, "Meixiang, this painting is no
ordinary one; it is a manifestation of the Bodhisattva, and must be treated with reverence. You may light incense, and I will first unfurl and pay my respects before offering it."
Meixiang unfurled the painting, and the young lady exclaimed in surprise, "How strange! It's not a Guanyin image, but a painting
of a young lady in springtime, which was carelessly taken." Meixiang pointed to the painting and said, "Miss, look at
the girl chasing butterflies with that young lady; how beautifully she is depicted!" The young lady said, "How shameful! How can a young lady
be playing with that scholar? How can that be?" "Such behavior?" Meixiang said, "This 'Spring Beauty' is no less than 'Water Moon Guanyin
'." Then she turned her back and said, "How come the appearance is exactly the same as Miss's?" Then she turned to Miss and said, "
The girl in this painting is exactly the same as Miss, what is the reason for this?" Miss looked carefully again and said, "I'm afraid it was just a casual
painting, a coincidence, not necessarily done with intention." Meixiang said, "Look at the yellow and kingfisher feathers, everything is similar, how could it be that it
was written casually by Caoqiao Pang'er?" Miss examined it again and said, "Oh! There is a signature on it, let me take a look."
"Written by Huo Duliang of Maoling, presented to Yunniang for her makeup."
Meixiang, upon hearing this, said, "That's strange. Why is she also called Yunniang? Miss, look at her delicate eyebrows, her slender
fingers, her rosy cheeks, standing like a peach blossom on the moss; her lotus steps are light and steady, exuding charm, she's already quite
lovely. And then there are the butterflies searching for flowers, and a pair of orioles singing among the willows, making the scene even more interesting." The young lady said, "Looking at
the scene in the painting, could it be Liu Ruan who led people astray to Tiantai, or perhaps Sima Xiangru who happened to accompany Wenjun? It's truly hard to guess." "No, I won't come.
Meixiang, I was going to exchange the painting with the courtyard lady, but it's a bit strange. Let me take a closer look."
Meixiang said, "No need to exchange it, Miss, keep it and consider it your own perfect spring look." The young lady said, "It's just that there's one more
person in it. I'm afraid it won't be appropriate for my parents to see it." Meixiang laughed again, "If Master and Madam see it, there really is one more
person; but if Miss sees it herself, I'm afraid it's just right!" The young lady shouted, "Stop talking!" and then
went back to her boudoir. It is truly:
How can one's heart be like this, her soul should be in a hundred flowers.
It is said that since Miss Feiyun saw the painting, she has unknowingly become a little melancholy. One day, in front of Xubu Pavilion, she heard the spring
breeze blowing, scattering the flowers. Suddenly she looked up and exclaimed, "Oh! These two butterflies, how they fly so
beautifully! They keep fluttering around my clothes, why is that? Look, they've flown off to the flowering tree to admire the blossoms, and now
they're swirling around my skirt again. Just as they're about to fly away, they return. Look, they're on the table now
, let me catch them."
She tried to catch them, but couldn't. Feeling drowsy, she lay down on the table and fell asleep. Meixiang came over and said,
"Oh! Miss has just finished washing up, why are you sleeping by the dressing table? Let me gently wake her so she can do some needlework." She coughed
, and Miss woke up. "Meixiang, what's that noise from under the eaves?" asked the young lady. "It's the iron horse
turning under the eaves without wind, but it's being spun by the wings of a little bird pecking at flowers." The young lady said, "I haven't been feeling well these past two days. Just now, I had a hazy
dream, like I was chasing butterflies under a flowering tree, when a tea thorn caught on my embroidered skirt, and
I was startled awake." Meixiang said, "Yes, yes! It's that painting 'Spring Scenery' you made the other day. It has so many scenes in
it. You saw it and thought about it, hence the dream. I wonder if you were with the woman in red in your dream?"
The young lady said, "Don't talk nonsense! Bring me the painting, let me take a closer look."
Meixiang didn't dare to delay and brought the painting. The young lady examined it for a while and said, "If it was just a casual stroke, how could it be like
this? Meixiang, bring me a mirror." As she looked at the painting, she looked in the mirror and couldn't help but laugh. She said, "The woman in the painting
looks just like me, except for a red mark on her cheek." Meixiang said, "Miss, look at the oriole and the
pair of pink butterflies, how can they be painted so vividly? Miss, are the two people in this painting a married couple, or are they in a brothel
, buying pleasure and chasing after laughter? If they are from a respectable family, they shouldn't be dressed so coquettishly; if they just met, they shouldn't be
so familiar with each other. Look at this young man in red, with his black gauze hat and red apricot-colored shirt, he is very handsome. I've often heard of
Pan Anren, who threw fruit and drove a fragrant carriage, I doubt he would let him have it." The young lady said, "Since the signature is Huo Duliang, and the handwriting is still fresh,
there must be such a person here. I look closely at this painting, it's half real and half fake, intentional and unintentional, it's really hard to understand. Fortunately
, there are writing materials on the table, so I can't help but write a poem to express my melancholy." So she took a small piece of flowered stationery, picked up the brush
, hesitated for a moment, and wrote it down. The inscription reads:
"Wind blows, rain passes, flowers wither, spring dreams in the boudoir are cold.
I rise, powerless, to lean on the railing, gazing at the painting.
Green sleeves flutter, red robes adorn, orioles and butterflies are charming.
When will we meet again at Wushan? Like a painting of Li'er. " — Inscribed by Feiyun,
on the right side of the poem "Drunken Peach Blossom Spring. " The young lady said, "This poem of mine is worth more than this painting." She then put down her brush. Just then, Meixiang cried out, "How strange! Why are these swallows on the beam flying back and forth in front of the dressing table, unlike before? Let me swat them down. Look, the swallow's mud has stained the makeup box. Oh! How did they carry away the poem the young lady wrote? Swallow, come back! Come back! Give me back my young lady's poem!" The young lady laughed, "Silly girl, how can swallows understand human speech? Let it be." Meixiang said, "Alright, I'll pack up my brush and inkstone and go inside first. The young lady can rest in the pavilion." She sent Meixiang inside. The young lady said, "Alas! With this girl here just now, I couldn't speak my mind." She smiled and continued , "Indeed, the girl in the red dress in the painting is quite lovely. The inscription I wrote was carried away by a swallow, just like the story of the red leaves in the imperial moat—it's a fitting match." Indeed: Swallows do not return, flowers are wet with rain, the spring breeze should lament the twilight. Where has the note carried away by the swallow landed? Let's find out in the next chapter. Chapter Six: Huo Xiufu Picks Up the Inscription at Qujiang, Jia Nanzhong Sets Up Camp at Hulao Pass . It is said that Huo Sheng stayed at Xingyun's house, waiting for the performance. He said, "The other day I wrote a small portrait for Yunniang, ten..."

He was quite pleased with himself, but when he went to have it framed, a framer mistakenly sent it elsewhere, taking instead a painting of Guanyin in ink and wash
, which turned out to be a genuine work by Wu Daozi. Alas! My own handwriting, though not as good as Wu Daozi's, is probably comparable
to the beauty of Yunniang in the painting. This is quite laughable; where am I supposed to find such a painting? I can only let it be. However, the examination
is still far off, and the journey is tedious, so I secretly went for a stroll along the Qujiang River embankment. Look at the willow branches like gold, the peach blossoms like fire,
the east wind blowing, and the fallen petals covering the ground—truly a spring scene. I have no heart to appreciate it, but my mind is preoccupied. I thought of
that painting from the other day, depicting Yunniang so realistically. Even if someone else had mistakenly taken it, there would be no other woman as beautiful as her to use;
even if I had taken it, it would have been in vain. But I mistakenly took a different painting, this one of Guanyin. Now it hangs in my small
pavilion, where I burn incense and change the water—it's quite amusing. I've arrived at the Qujiang River. The newly cleared scenery is truly captivating! Look at
these swallows flying so curiously, hovering right above my head, as if they recognize me! Look at them, flitting about in
the wind, why did one of them drop a tuft of red feathers? Let me see what it is.”
He picked it up and examined it, exclaiming in surprise, “It’s not a feather, it’s a piece of paper the size of a red leaf, with many tiny characters written
on it. Let me see.” He then recited the poem “Drunken Peach Blossom Spring.” Looking closely at the poem, it seemed to be inspired by
the painting “Spring Beauty”, the tone and brushstrokes so delicate, clearly resembling the style of a young woman. "Alas! I just said that
there might not be anyone like Xingyun in the world, but who knew there would be one here. The last line, 'Like a painting of Li'er,'
is practically a confession. Huo Duliang, Huo Duliang, you are truly absurd! Wait a moment, Xingyun
was still wondering about missing Chunrong yesterday, and this morning I must hurry back and tell him that the painting has been found, so he won't be troubled."
He circled around the doorway: "Open the door! Open the door!"
Xingyun opened the door and asked, "Huo Lang, where did you go this morning?" Huo Sheng replied,
"Yunniang, I took a walk along the Qujiang embankment this morning." Xingyun asked, "What was the scenery like at Qujiang?" Huo Sheng said:
"The scenery over there is quite beautiful. Suddenly, a swallow appeared, carrying a piece of flowered paper, and fell from the sky. When
I picked it up and looked at it, I saw a poem on it. Look at the poem; it's clearly an inscription for mistakenly accepting your 'Spring Beauty.' Don't be upset; wait until we can inquire and
retrieve it for you. But what's its name? Flying Cloud!" Xingyun said, "Huo Lang, I didn't have the good fortune to see the 'Spring Beauty' you painted for me . That swallow bringing the poem must be a special connection. Keep it safe
and wait until after the performance to inquire about its whereabouts." As they were talking, suddenly... The servant came and said, "Master Huo, Master Xianyu just sent a letter saying that the Ministry of Rites issued a notice today, and that the examination is to begin tomorrow morning. Please be there before dawn." Huo Sheng replied, "Understood." He said to Xingyun, "Why did the examination start so suddenly? I caught a chill and feel a bit unwell. I'll rest in my small room for a while . Please have Yunniang take care of my writing materials." Xingyun said, "I know everything you need. I'll take care of everything. Don't worry about it." She then prepared Huo Sheng for the examination. But let's leave that aside for now. Now, let's talk about the military governor of Tianxiong, whose surname was Jia and given name was Nanzhong. He was the one who had previously presented the ink painting of Guanyin to Minister Li. He was originally from Xingzhou, and had distinguished himself on the border. Because of some disturbances in the Yuyang area, he said, "I have been favored by the Emperor and appointed as a military commander to govern Tianxiong. My loyalty is as strong as a bushel, and I have always wanted to repay the Emperor. However, this fellow An Lushan is a mediocre man who has abused his power . I heard that he raised an army in Fanyang and has captured many prefectures and counties. I have no choice but to prepare my troops and horses to go to the capital to defend the Emperor. I think: Tongguan is firmly guarded by the old General Geshu; I only fear that An Lushan will launch a surprise attack on Shangnan via the Hulao Pass, which will inevitably shake Chang'an. Soldiers! You must set up camp at the Hulao Pass and not allow a single soldier from Fanyang to cross it. When the signal fires are lit, be sure to check carefully; bells and weapons must be in perfect order. If enemy cavalry charges, you must bravely intercept and kill them. Anyone who retreats will be punished according to military law." The soldiers all agreed, "Understood." Commander Jia ordered the camp to be set up, and the troops advanced in unison, not daring to make any mistakes. Along the way, Jia Jiedu was filled with resentment, saying, "Lushan, Lushan! You rat! The court has treated you well, yet you dare to act recklessly, waging war and causing such suffering to those people. How hateful! How hateful! Hulao Pass is just ahead ; we must rush up and set up camp." The soldiers responded, "Yes, sir!" In no time, squads upon squads, layer upon layer, surrounded Hulao Pass like an iron barrel. An order was issued that the traitorous barbarians must not be allowed to pass. It was truly a case of: General Baima frequently defeating the enemy, how could the barbarian cavalry be allowed to cross Hulao Pass? What happened next? Let's find out in the next chapter. Chapter Seven: The Secret is Leaked, Mei Xiang's Ugly Demeanor Transformed into a Scoundrel's Words . It is said that Minister Li and Madam Bao suddenly noticed that Miss Feiyun was not eating or drinking, only wanting to sleep, and looking thin and haggard, which greatly worried them. The servant was summoned and instructed, "Miss is feeling unwell; quickly fetch a doctor to examine her." The servant replied, "Master is not in the yamen, so it's inconvenient to summon a doctor. There's a female doctor on the street named Meng Mama; everyone says her medicine is miraculous. Perhaps we should ask her to come and see her." The lady said, "Then go and fetch her quickly." Upon hearing this, the servant dared not delay. He went to the Meng family's gate and asked, "Is anyone home?" The female doctor, who was hunchbacked, came over and asked, "Who is this?" The servant said, "I am from Master Li's household; I have come to see you." Meng Mama said, "Then let's go together." Before long, they entered the yamen and saw the lady, saying, "This old woman kowtows." The lady said, "Please rise. Female doctor, I only have one daughter, who has been slightly unwell these past few days. I would be grateful if you could examine her and cure her." Meng Mama said, "Madam, gynecology is my specialty; I will naturally do my best." The lady said, "Meixiang, you..." "You may lead him in." The lady then followed and asked, "Girl , are you feeling better today?" The young lady replied, "Not really. I have no other symptoms, but I just can't muster any energy ." Meng Ma stepped forward and said, "Miss, please forgive my formalities! Let me check your pulse so I can prescribe medicine." After taking your pulse for a while, she said, "Miss, you are weak and afraid of the wind, and you get feverish in the afternoon. You are suffering from palpitations." The young lady said, "You are right about the illness." Meng Ma said, "I have been treating patients since I was seventeen or eighteen years old, and I have never misdiagnosed an illness. This illness is easy to treat. I will prepare one dose of medicine, and you will be fine." Mei Xiang asked, "What is the main ingredient for this medicine? I will go and decoct it." Meng Ma said, "Three slices of ginger and two dates, decocted until eight-tenths reduced. Please have the old lady personally prepare the prescription." The lady said, "In that case, please sit for a while while I watch someone prepare it, and I will trouble you to do it yourself."

"It would be best to give Miss some medicine!" said Meng Ma. "That's fine." The lady turned and left.
Meng Ma pulled Mei Xiang aside and said, "Mei Xiang, let me ask you, I see that Miss's pulse is heavy with melancholy
, like a spring fever. Tell me the truth, how did she get sick?" Mei Xiang said, "To tell you the truth,
Miss is usually very serious and doesn't have any wild thoughts. It's just that the other day, when we were mounting a scroll of Guanyin to offer as a sacrifice,
the mounting shop mistakenly sent us a painting." Meng Ma said, "Are you upset because of the mistake?" Mei Xiang said, "
Not at all, it's quite funny." Meng Ma said, "How is it funny?" Mei Xiang said, "Who knew that the mistaken painting was a spring scene painting?
The woman in the painting looks exactly like my Miss. Beside that woman, there's a
handsome young man, very good-looking." " My young lady saw it, and it seemed as if she was thinking of that person. Occasionally,
she would write a poem about this incident on a piece of paper, which was quite strange." Meng Ma said, "How strange?" Mei
Xiang said, "Just as she finished writing, a swallow flew down from the beam and carried it away. Therefore, since that day, my young lady has
been listless." Meng Ma said, "Sister Mei Xiang, you're just talking nonsense. You can't fool your old mother
. Who has ever suffered from lovesickness when they can't see each other? I don't believe it." Mei Xiang said, "I don't believe the truth when I tell you.
Look, my young lady is fast asleep. I'll secretly take the painting and show it to you, and you'll see clearly." Meng Ma said, "Go ahead and get it, go ahead and get
it!"
Mei Xiang got it. When Meng Ma unfolded the painting, she exclaimed in surprise, "So it really is true! I think I recognize this
girl, but I can't quite place her." She then secretly looked at the young lady and said, "She really does resemble you." Mei Xiang said,
"Mama, I can't read. The young lady said there's the name of the painter on it." Meng Ma said, "I can
roughly recognize a few characters from writing the prescription. Let me see." She then read and recited, "Written by Huo Duliang of Maoling as a gift to Yun Niang.
There is indeed a name. This matter is truly strange. That's why she's been having such wild thoughts, which has caused her to fall ill with spring fever. But
the longing from not seeing her is actually quite bearable, and it's not difficult to cure. You should put the painting away now, lest the old lady sees it and
it becomes inconvenient."
Just then, the lady brought the medicine with someone, ordered the young lady to take it, and instructed Mei Xiang, "It would be
best for the young lady to get some sleep." Suddenly, it was announced that the master had returned to the yamen. The lady greeted him, saying, "My lord is back." Minister Li asked, "Madam,
is the girl feeling better?" The lady replied, "I just had this female doctor examine her; she said it's nothing serious, and she only slept after taking the medicine."
Meng Ma stepped forward and kowtowed. The Minister said, "Thank you for your trouble. Is the young lady's illness serious?" Meng Ma said, "The young lady's
illness is a slight cold, and she's also a little upset. Just one or two doses of medicine will make her feel better." The Minister said,
"That's good. Madam, our daughter is still not well, and I've been ordered to attend the imperial examinations today, so I must go immediately.
You can give this female doctor a tael of silver; if she needs medicine later, just send someone to fetch it. To avoid the gatekeepers, you can't come in.
When the young lady is better, after I go on stage, I will thank you profusely." Meng Ma agreed, bowed in thanks, and left.
A servant came to report that the patrol officers were all waiting in the outer room. Minister Li said, "I am about to enter the examination hall. Madam, please
go inside." He then went to the outer courtyard and called over the patrol officer, saying, "I have a notice regarding security measures. Have it printed immediately and
post it everywhere without delay." The patrol officer responded and left. The servants reported, "Please, sir, depart." The steward said,
"See sir off." The Minister instructed the steward, "You are experienced and capable; everything in the yamen must be kept strictly confidential. Go in."
The steward said, "Understood." The servants followed and rushed away.
Meanwhile, the examiner had already arrived at the examination hall and instructed the patrol officer to signal the gate to open. The candidates were to be thoroughly searched and
entered in single file, their names called and each assigned to their assigned room, without skipping any. The patrol officer obeyed. Just then, the gate was sounded with a gong. Upon entering the courtyard,
the patrol officers lined up on both sides. The scholars, some old and some young, answered the call of their names. The inspector shouted,
"Search carefully!" The soldiers replied in unison, "The search is flawless." Some returned to their east cells, others to their west cells, leaving one without
a number. The inspector said, "What if all the seats are taken? Well, let them sit here. Reporting to the sir, the roll call and search are complete
. Please seal the door." So the door was sealed. The examiner said, "It's gratifying that this year's examination was conducted with strict discipline and without any flaws. The weather is
also refreshing, perfect for celebrating the grand ceremony. We got up early today, so let them go in and rest for a while
. We can open the gate tomorrow morning."
The next evening, everyone was seen carrying tall lanterns to welcome the examinees. He said, "Guys,
the rules are strict this year. Don't crowd near the fence. Stand far apart and wait for your respective husbands to come out before going to greet them."
Just then, a bailiff carrying a clapper came over and said, "The rules are very strict this year. You must keep idlers
away from the fence. As long as the candidates come out, let them out clearly. Anyone who tries to push will be beaten."
Three clappers were struck inside, and a shout came to open the gate. The patrol officer outside said, "Make preparations inside, let the first candidate out."
The bailiff said, "You all stand back a bit so the candidates can walk in." Everyone looked inside and saw an old man
being carried away. A man with a crew cut came to greet Huo Sheng. Seeing Huo Sheng come out, he said, "Sir, you must be very pleased with yourself
." He quickly took the pen and inkstone and followed him. Then another shopkeeper, Yao, said, "Master Xianyu went into the examination hall,
but the sun is already high in the sky. I've had breakfast at home, and he still hasn't come out. I was worried, so I went to check in front of the examination hall
to see what was going on. This is the gate of the examination hall, and it's still sealed off." He heard the bailiffs shouting, "What a waste! What a
waste! These gentlemen, I don't know if they're truly capable, fighting hard inside; or if their ink has dried up,
not a drop can be squeezed out. Damn it! We have to work so hard serving them here. They're habitual gamblers and whores, what a bunch of bastards
!" Shopkeeper Yao said, "Sigh! Listening to these people's complaints, it's as if they know Master Xianyu's usual behavior."
Suddenly, a shout came from inside the courtyard to grab the examination papers, and the gate was opened by striking the gong. The bailiff exclaimed, "Thank goodness! It's done, he's out!"
The shopkeeper, seeing Xianyu Ji emerge, greeted him, "This humble servant is here to receive you." Xianyu Ji said, "It's been so tiring." The bailiff
stepped forward and said, "Let me ask you, if you're going to work so hard, why don't you just stay home and relax?
We've suffered all this time because of you. Looking at your face, you don't seem like someone who's destined for success." Xianyu Ji retorted jokingly
, "I won't dare do that again. If I do, well, well…" He turned and went home with the shopkeeper.
On the way, he said, "Speaking of which, the writing inside was so exquisite, it must have been so intense that my teeth suddenly started
hurting. Ouch, I felt like I was dying, so I had to slowly copy it down, which is why it took me this long to come out. No wonder these dogs…"
"Speak." He then entered the shop, where the innkeeper, Yao, said, "Sir, please have some food and rest. I also need to rest."
Xian Sheng replied, "Thank you! Please make yourself at home." The innkeeper took his leave.
Xian Sheng turned back and laughed, "Xianyu Ji, Xianyu Ji! I ask you: What do you mean by this? Living in this world, you've endured so
much hardship and toil, taking three years to finally take the exam, only to find yourself unable to write a single word, and instead being
humiliated by those dogs. You're not here to watch the exam, but to suffer. Sit down and eat this food and drink
; it's my old Xian's experience of taking the exam."
After finishing his meal, he continued, "Thinking about writing in the exam hall, my heart was filled with anxiety..." Tight, I don't know what kind of brothel manual or drinking account it wrote, it's
all scribbles like a ghost's hand. If I want to succeed, unless I'm surrounded by officials, like a magpie flying overhead, I
have to crash my head into it, otherwise, I'll just be a worthless skeleton for the rest of my life. Now, I have no choice but
to go and discuss a method with Old Zang. I'll first go to Huo Xiufu's place and ask him what his name is.
It's just like: "
Let's steal the Heavenly Weaver's brocade pouch from beside the Milky Way. "
How exactly will the name be changed? Let's find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Eight: Changing Seat Numbers to Test the Waters, Explaining
the Reasons After Huo Sheng appeared, he was quite pleased with his writing and said to Yun Niang, "My writing is excellent, and I have not disappointed you
. However, I am feeling a little unwell." He then took out the writing from his sleeve and said, "I shouldn't
have copied the article by the window this morning. Now, my head is even more dizzy, and my heart is very agitated. I'm afraid I am not fortunate enough
to be worthy of the title of scholar." Xing Yun said, "What are you saying! Your body is thin, and you have been working hard, so you are a little impatient. I remember that when I was ill years ago, I consulted a female doctor named Meng, and her medicine was very effective. I have already sent someone to invite her. Let her come and see me, and I will give her a prescription
. "
"Two doses of medicine will cure you, so don't worry." Just then, Xianyu Ji suddenly entered. Huo
Sheng awkwardly bowed, and Xianyu Ji said, "Brother Huo, why are you in such a state?" Huo Sheng replied, "I'm slightly unwell and
unable to greet you. Please forgive me!" Xianyu Ji said, "You must have been too focused on the performance." Xingyun said, "That's exactly
right."
Xianyu Ji moved his chair closer and said, "Good things are coming soon, so you must take good care of yourself and not treat this lightly. Your success on stage
goes without saying." Huo Sheng said, "Under the eaves, I hastily finished this piece, writing this nonsense here." Xianyu Ji took it and
hummed it silently, but couldn't utter a single word. Kua said, "Seven such exquisite essays are sure to lead to a high score, how can you say
they were hasty? Is there such a thing as hasty writing? How can you have so many good things in your belly? You should be sick from bloating." Huo Sheng
asked, "Brother, you must be very proud. If you write something, I'd like to ask for your advice."
Xianyu Ji laughed, "I can't hide anything from you, brother. I'll just have a meal or two at the examination hall, and when I get home,
I'll go and fool the villagers, saying that Master Xianyu has attended the examination again. The writing is just a few lines I jotted down randomly
, how could I remember anything? Just kidding, just kidding! And another thing, this year's examination..." The rules are different from previous years. Each person must identify
their own number on their exam paper. When the results are announced, only the number is written, not the name. Only after the paper has been presented and verified
can the name be written for publication. Huo Sheng said, "I remember that." Xianyu Ji said, "I chose the 'Ze' number."
Huo Sheng said, "I chose the 'Ri' number." Xianyu Ji said, "Do you remember that clearly?" Huo Sheng said, "How could I not remember my own number
?" Xianyu Ji laughed, "Yunniang, don't blame me for saying this, but from now on, whenever you encounter someone with the 'Ri' number, hug them and
say, 'This is my Huo husband, my Huo husband!'" Yun said, "Master Xian, please don't blame me for saying this, but you
really are a thief-like gentleman." Huo Sheng stopped her, saying, "Don't make fun of me."
Suddenly, Bao'er led in a hunchbacked old woman doctor. Xianyu Ji said, "Where did this old woman come from?" Xingyun
said, "She's a female doctor, whom I invited to examine Huo Lang." Meng Ma greeted her and turned her back, saying, "I was saying that
the painting in the Li residence the other day looked like a person, but I couldn't remember at the time. It turns out she looks just like
Hua Yunniang, the one who asked me to examine her years ago."
Xingyun asked Huo Lang to raise his head, "I've invited a female doctor here so she can take your pulse." Meng Ma looked carefully, then
turned around and said, "How strange! This gentleman's face also looks somewhat familiar, but I can't remember at the moment. Oh, it also looks like
the scholar in the red shirt in the painting I saw in the Li residence. I understand." Then she grabbed Xingyun and asked, "I just heard
this gentleman's surname is Huo. Is his name Huo Duliang?" Xingyun said, "It really is him." Meng Ma said, "Does he
know how to paint?" Xingyun said, "He paints very well. Mother,
how do you know his name and how he paints?" Meng Ma said, "Don't worry about it. There's something to say." Then she said behind her back, "
What a coincidence! It's him! Don't say anything yet. Let me take his pulse and then say something to startle him. Let's see how he reacts."
So she took his pulse and said, "Ah! Why is he so thin? Since he lives in a brothel,
how could the woman over the wall have been spying on him?" Xingyun said, "Mother, I only asked you to treat me. Why are you talking about such things?" "Meng
Ma said, "This is not idle talk; the root of the illness lies here. There's another matter: you shouldn't have applied the cinnabar to the satin. Even the most
miraculous elixir cannot cure this ailment. If you were to recover, it would only be after breaking free from your infatuation and becoming a loving couple."
Upon hearing this, Xianyu Ji angrily said, "This old woman! Master Huo invited you to treat the illness, yet you don't explain the symptoms, instead spouting
nonsense. How utterly despicable!" Meng Ma said, "It's not nonsense, it's the scroll painting 'Spring Beauty.'"
Xianyu Ji said, "Still this nonsense?" Meng Ma said, "It's not nonsense, it's a piece of poetry." Xianyu Ji
said, "Where did this come from?" Meng Ma said, "Let me tell you, let me tell you, and I've troubled that swallow."
Huo Sheng, surprised and suspicious, quietly asked Xingyun, "This old woman's words seem to indicate she knows the whereabouts of the cinnabar." " You
can ask him," Xingyun said. "Mother, what you just said has some background. Please explain it clearly."
Meng Ma said, "To tell you the truth, the other day I was invited by the Li family to examine Miss's illness. Her symptoms seemed to be those
of spring fever. I questioned Meixiang carefully, and she said, 'The other day, because of the offering of a scroll of Guanyin, I mistakenly received a scroll of Spring
Beauty. The woman in the painting looks very much like her.'"
Huo Sheng and Xingyun exclaimed in surprise, "So that's how it is!" Meng Ma said, "The painting depicts a handsome young man in a red robe
. Miss saw him and missed him terribly, which is why she fell ill. I didn't believe it at the time, but Meixiang
secretly brought the painting to me." Huo Sheng asked, "Mother, what is the painting like?" Meng Ma said:
"The one above? That young lady looks just like Yunniang; the one in red looks just like you, sir." Huo Sheng laughed,
"There are many people in the world who look alike, that's me." Meng Ma also laughed, "Sir, are you still trying to hide it from me?
There's even a signature on it, I remember it's 'Written by Huo Duliang of Maoling, presented to Yunniang for her dressing.' Isn't that right? Or
is it just nonsense?" Xianyu Ji said, "I know that you gave your painting 'Spring Beauty' to Miao the Drunkard to frame, but I
didn't know about these things later." Huo Sheng said, "Who knew that old Miao was a drunkard, he must have been drunk and sent it to the wrong place.
Now, hearing what Meng Ma said, it's clear that it was mistakenly sent to the Li family."
Xian Sheng asked Meng Ma, "Is the one in the Li family the one who is in charge of the imperial examinations this year?" Meng Ma said, "That's right." Huo
Sheng said, "'Spring Beauty' was originally written for Yunniang, who knew that Li Xiao..." "My sister looks just like Yunniang. Now she mistakes me for her and
is confused over there. No wonder when I was strolling along Qujiang, I saw a swallow carrying a letter, the handwriting and tone of which sounded like a young woman
's. Now, after Aunt Meng explained, I know it was written by Miss Li." Aunt Meng said, "Meixiang also mentioned this matter. When you pass the high school
entrance exam, I will act as your matchmaker." Xingyun said, "I dare not trouble myself with matchmaking. I would be very grateful if you could gently tell Miss Li that I should return 'Spring Beauty'
." Aunt Meng said, "If you want it back, how can she believe it without proof?"
Xingyun thought for a moment and said, "I've got it! You take the letter and let Miss Li verify it. Then she will believe it. Return '
Spring Beauty' and send 'Guanyin' to her. How about that? How about that?" So he asked Huo Sheng for the letter. Xian Sheng took the letter and read aloud,
"Is this Miss Li's handwriting?" Meng Ma replied, "Yes." Xing Yun took the letter and handed it to Meng Ma, along with
a phoenix hairpin, saying, "This is for you, Mama. If you return the painting, I'll thank you even more." Meng Ma was pleased and said, "Thank you!
Thank you! I can't enter the mansion yet. Master Li said before I entered, 'The security is tight; I've been instructed not to move around.'
I'll see if Miss Li will send it after I leave the examination hall."
Upon hearing this, Huo Sheng felt much better; his illness had subsided considerably. He sent Meng Ma back. Xian Yu Ji
said, "So that's what happened. Brother Huo, take good care of yourself. I need to go to my place to pack my things. If things get tough after the results are announced
, I'll be like that hunchbacked woman, bend over, carry my bag, and run away!" Huo Sheng said, "Do
n't tease me. I won't see you off."
Xian Yu Ji took his leave. What happened next? To be continued in the next chapter.
Chapter Nine: Without compromise, nothing can be accomplished; the official's cunning schemes easily frighten his friend .
It is said that Xianyu Ji, after bidding farewell to Huo Sheng, said on the way, "Just now I heard that old woman with the camel's head say many things, always
trying to pull many tricks in 'Spring Beauty,' but let her be. It's good that she asked about his pen name in detail. Although I don't understand
the subtleties of his writing, seeing his triumphant state despite his illness, the writing must be excellent. I must go find Old Zang to handle that matter. This is
his door: Open the door! Open the door!" Zang Butui, hearing this, opened the door and said, "So it's Brother Xianyu, please
come in and talk." The two entered the hall and sat down. Zang Bitui asked, "Did you do well in yesterday's examination?" Xian Sheng laughed and said,
"If I had, I wouldn't have come to see you. Fortunately, I asked a friend about his pen name." Zang Bitui asked, "What pen
name?" Xian Sheng said, "My friend's pen name is 'Ri' (日), and mine is 'Ze' (昃). I came to trouble you so we could exchange our pen names as soon as possible, lest
we miss something important."
Upon hearing this, Zang Bitui thought carefully and said, "That way, we don't even need to cut the paper. We can just remove the bottom half of your pen name
and add a few strokes to the bottom half of your friend's pen name. Wouldn't that be a perfect match?" Xian Sheng said, "That makes sense! That makes sense!
Well thought." Zang Bitui said, "There's only one thing: the essay must be exceptionally good to be sure of winning." Xian Sheng said:
"The writing is beyond question," Zang Butui said. "Wait! Where is your esteemed friend from?" Xian Sheng replied, "He is my classmate
, Huo Duliang from Maoling." Zang Butui said, "Luckily you asked clearly, otherwise things would have gotten out of hand. This kind of
cheating can only be done by using someone from another prefecture or county, someone you don't know. If it's a classmate, once the results are announced, the papers will be circulated
, and there won't be time to change the judgment. What will happen if that Huo guy says something? I won't be able to get away with it either. This is absolutely unacceptable!
Unless we find someone else." Xianyu Ji said, "What should we do? We don't have any other friends who can write well enough to do
that."
He hesitated and said, "I've got it! I've got it! This Huo friend has recently done something bad." Zang Butui said:
"What happened?" Xian Sheng said, "The other day he painted a scroll titled 'Spring Beauty,' which was sent to Minister Li's residence to seduce
the young lady. Upon seeing the painting, the young lady thought of him and fell ill." Zang Butui said, "Is this the same
Minister Li who oversees the imperial examinations?" Xian Sheng said, "Yes, yes. The young lady personally wrote a poem on a piece of paper and gave it to him, which he accepted
." Zang Butui said, "This is even more inappropriate." Xian Sheng said, "Brother, this is clearly breaking up her private life and
using this as a pretext for connections; the crime is not small." Zang Butui said, "Is this true? We need some proof."
Xian Sheng said, "It is indeed true! The men leading the horses on both sides are all that hunchbacked old woman doctor. He even gave her
a gold hairpin. The young lady's poem is now in the old woman's hands; if we question her, we'll find out."
Zang Butui said, "Is that hunchbacked old woman doctor surnamed Meng?" Xian Sheng said, "Yes." Zang Butui said:
"That's not difficult," said Xian Sheng. "He often uses medicine at my house. To be honest, I have two servants who are currently on the task of arresting him. I'll have them
go and fetch him first, saying they're here for treatment. Once they've coaxed him into revealing his true intentions, we can trick him into handing over the poems and hairpins, then lock him up
. We'll make sure he's a skilled handyman so we can arrest that Huo fellow and send him to the authorities." Xian Sheng said, "Excellent! Excellent! But
if we take him to the authorities, things will get out of hand and difficult to handle. It's better to scare him into running away on his own. Once he gets the official title, it'll be
mine. That's much smoother." Zang Butui said, "You've shown some maturity." He then called his servants over.
The two men approached and said, "What orders does the master have for us?" Zang Butui said, "This gentleman's surname is Xian. He has
something for you to do. Come here!" He then whispered something in their ears and asked, "Do you understand
?" The two men understood and said in unison, "We understand. We need to tell you where that Huo man lives; and we also
need Master Xian to go there, play tricks, and settle the score before we can stop." Xian said, "That makes sense. Everyone,
when you catch the Camel Woman tomorrow, secretly send me a message, and I'll go there pretending not to know her. There's a reason for that
. You can leave now. You'll be rewarded after it's done." The two men agreed and left.
It was truly
a plan to capture the Jade Rabbit in the moonlight and to seize the Golden Crow in the daytime.
But how exactly did they capture the Camel Woman and frighten Huo? Let's find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Ten: Huo Xiufu's Escape to the Inn, An Lushan's Great Victory at Tongguan Pass.
It is said that Hua Xingyun burned
incense and prayed before the Guanyin statue, saying, "Yesterday, because Huo Lang was ill, I made a wish, and today I am fortunate to be well. I sincerely thank the Great Bodhisattva for saving me, and I am deeply grateful." She then prostrated herself in prayer.
Unbeknownst to her, Huo Xiufu had overheard everything and said, "So, Yunniang is praying for me here." She then said to Xingyun
, "We are a couple who have only been together for a short time, yet our feelings are so deep. Today, before the Bodhisattva, let us make a vow." The two knelt down together
. Huo Xiufu said, "I am Huo Duliang. Now that I have a chance to achieve fame and fortune, I will marry Hua Xingyun, and we will never forget each other."
They rose from their knees, and Huo Xiufu said, "I have one more thing to say beforehand: if we ever meet that special person in the future, we will surely
be united in marriage." Xingyun said, "We'll talk about that then." The two made their vows and discussed the matter further.
Meanwhile, the two constables had bound Meng Po and dragged her around looking for Huo Sheng. Meng Po said, "Poor
thing, how would I know anything about such shady dealings! I was asking Huo Xiucai to exchange these poems and hairpins for '
Spring Beauty' because of his illness. What kind of connection is this?" The constables shouted, "You don't need to use sweet words. We're already at Hua Xingyun's door.
Don't make a scene. Just coax him out." So they gently knocked on the door, and Xingyun asked from inside, "Who are you looking for?" The
constables replied, "I'm looking for Huo Duliang."
Huo Sheng heard this. Surprised, he withdrew to avoid the situation. Xingyun then asked, "What are you looking for him for?" Opening the door
, he saw a constable burst in, saying, "You still ask what's wrong? How did you manage to pull strings and seduce a virtuous woman? Now you have a confession from
a woman!" Meng Po said, "Hua Xingyun! Quickly summon Scholar Huo! Let's confront him face to face. Why did I implicate him? Why am I
being tortured like this for no reason? I'm distressed! I'm distressed!"
Just as she was arguing, Xianyu Ji walked in and asked, "Where are these idle people making such a racket?" The constable
replied, "They're not idle people making a racket; they're here to break into the gate." Xianyu Ji asked, "Who's breaking into the gate?" The constable
said, "It's Huo Duliang." Xianyu Ji said, "Hey! Hey! Hey! Scholar Huo is my good friend, a talented and
honest man. How could he do such a thing? Stop barging in. What proof do you have?" The constable said, "This gentleman is
right. As the saying goes..." "To catch a thief, catch him red-handed; to apprehend an adulterer, catch them both." He then handed the note and hairpin to Xian Sheng, asking, "
What are these?" Xian Sheng replied, "It's a piece of paper." The constable said, "Who wrote this note? It's
the handwriting of the young lady of the official in charge of the imperial examinations. Huo Duliang first drew a portrait of her in springtime and secretly gave it to her
. Then he seduced her and wrote a poem in response. The meaning was nothing more than using this romantic exchange to secretly communicate. This hairpin is for
this old woman, who was asked to run errands between them; it's the real stolen goods. The real culprit will be tortured and punished; he has brought it upon himself. How can you say I
'm using this to extort money from a scholar? Besides, Master Li is very strict. If he finds out, will he release him easily? Even Hua Xingyun is a key
criminal. Speak quickly! Where is Huo Duliang? If he's hiding, that's serious."
Upon hearing this, Hua Xingyun cried in fear, "I packed it up and took it back after the examination; it's not here." The constable said:
"Since he won't admit it, lock him up." Xianyu Ji stopped him, saying, "Let's discuss this slowly. As the saying goes, 'Saving a
life is better than building a seven-story pagoda.'" He then pulled Xingyun behind him and whispered, "It's bad. The other day,
these people caught the old woman and her hairpin. We can't force them to do anything. Quickly pack some things, make them pay,
and leave." Xingyun panicked and said, "I have nothing else with me, only a pair of gold bracelets and a box of gold hairpins.
Please give them to them, Master Xian, and let this matter be settled." Xianyu Ji said, "Quickly fetch them."
Xingyun turned around, fetched them, and handed them to Xianyu Ji. Xian Sheng took it and said, "I have my own way." He turned around and said,
"Fellow officers, Lord Huo has already gone back after the event and is not here. Hua Xingyun is only temporarily with him.
How would a woman know where he came from and where he went? Please accept this small token of my respect as a favor and let him go for the sake of my student
." He then stuffed the item into the constable's sleeve. The constable said, "This is a matter of utmost importance! How can we settle accounts for these few items
? This won't do, this won't do!" Xingyun said, "There's no way to deal with this." Xianyu Ji said, "Very well, for the
sake of a friend, I still have two ingots of silver left on my waist. I'll give them that." Xingyun said, "Thank you!
Just one thing, the poem must not remain in their hands. Since you've added silver, you must ask for it back."
Xianyu Ji said to the constable, "Gentlemen, this young lady really doesn't have anything with her. I'll give her
another twenty taels of silver to let her go and return the poem." The constable said, "Sir, what you said before
was completely unreasonable. How come you're so reasonable now? I've seen it all, but out of respect for you, human feelings really outweigh the law."
He handed over the poem, and Xingyun accepted it. Xian Sheng said to the constable, "Thank you." Meng Po spoke up, "Gentlemen,
please have pity on me, I am a cripple, and let me go." The constable shouted, "Hey, you can't let her go! You have to take her to
the judicial office for trial and conviction to prove we weren't extorting her; we also have to deal with her at Huo Duliang's hometown." Then
he chained and dragged the camel woman away.
Xian Yu Ji then asked Xing Yun, "How did this happen?" Xing Yun said, "Even I don't know how it happened.
I was perfectly fine at home when suddenly these constables rushed in, and there was no time for anyone to explain." Xian Sheng said, "It must be that the camel woman's
tongue is loose, and she told others about what happened before. Oh dear! What kind of time is this? A little carelessness, and trouble has
arisen. Tell me, where is Brother Huo?" Xing Yun said, "He's in the back room, let's go in and meet him."
When Huo Sheng saw Xian Yu Ji, he couldn't help but shed tears. Xingyun said, "I am so grateful to Master
Xianyu. He spent so much of his own money to save me from all this trouble. I have also redeemed my poem." Huo Sheng took the poem and bowed to thank Xianyu. Xianyu Ji pulled him away,
saying, "We have been friends since childhood. What a bond we have! Why are you thanking me?" Huo Sheng said, "
Brother Xianyu, do you know how I have ever suffered like this in my life? If I were to go to court and be interrogated without any regard for the truth, how would I explain myself?"
Xianyu said, "It doesn't matter." Huo Sheng said, "The painting was indeed done by me, and it looks just like that young lady; the poem
is also in Miss Li's own handwriting. If I confess that a swallow brought it, I would be covered in mouths. Who would believe that? I would definitely be tortured and punished, and my
life would be over."
Upon hearing this, Xingyun was deeply saddened. Xianyu Ji said, "Brother Huo, this matter seems fine. I'll help you
by taking the lead and debating with those corrupt officials. I'm sure I won't lose to them, so there's no need to go far. Going there won't
hinder your career advancement." Huo Sheng replied, "Brother, my life is more important now. I can't afford to think about career advancement anymore. I have no choice but to..."
"Brother, as we part, please take care of things after we part." Xianyu Ji said, "If you really are going,
I will naturally take care of things after we part and make sure everything is settled properly. Don't worry about it." Huo Sheng said behind his back, "Very well. Go to [location name]
to find Teacher Qin." He turned around, and then bid farewell to Xingyun and Xianyu Ji with tears in his eyes, and hurriedly left.
Xian Sheng also bid farewell
to Xingyun. On the road, he said happily, "It was indeed a good plan. He will be able to help me when I go. I will tell Lao Zang again and tell him to rest assured and get into the business." Let's leave aside the matter of Xianyu Ji's cheating for now
.
Now, the old general Geshu Han was ordered to guard Tongguan. He gave his soldiers an order: "Look, the troops from Yuyang are
rushing up Tongguan like ants. When they get close, charge forward with all your might and do not retreat!" The soldiers obeyed the order and
held their ground tightly.
Now, An Lushan, leading He Qiannian and tens of thousands of soldiers, marched forward. Lushan said, "We're not
far from Tongguan! Geshu Han's troops are here; you and I will charge them." Before he finished speaking, the two armies clashed, and after a fierce battle,
Geshu Han was defeated and fled. Lushan laughed loudly, "Look at that old man Geshu Han! In just one or two battles, all those soldiers scattered
like rats. General He Qiannian, you can lead five thousand iron cavalry to storm Tongguan and head straight for Chang'an."
After He Qiannian received the order, did he manage to break through Tongguan? Let's find out in the next chapter.
(Chapter 11: Minister Li Leaves the Imperial Examination, Escorts the Emperor, and General Jia Accepts His Daughter)
It is said that after Miss Feiyun recovered from her illness, the old lady was very pleased. She said, "My child, your
father has been preparing for the imperial examinations for almost a month. Today is also the Dragon Boat Festival, and the kitchen has prepared calamus wine
. Let's have a few cups under the pomegranate blossoms to celebrate the festival." The young lady said, "I've only just recovered from my illness and am a bit sensitive to the wind. I'll stay here in the main hall
to keep you company, Mother." The lady said, "That's fine with you." The lady sat down, and the young lady served the wine, then sat down with her. Mei
Xiang brought the wine over.
The mother and daughter were enjoying the flowers and drinking when they suddenly saw Minister Li hurrying into the inner hall from the courtyard. The lady rose,
startled, and asked, "My lord, why are you in such a hurry to the yamen?" The minister replied, "It's terrible! Because of Geshu Han's defeat,
that scoundrel An Lushan has broken into Tongguan. The Emperor has already made his western tour, and I have no choice but to follow him. The announcement will be made after things have settled down."
The lady asked, "What should we do?" The minister ordered, "Quickly fetch my clothes to change into, tie the seal to my arm, and send
my personal belongings ahead. Let's leave the city by carriage for now, and then catch up on horseback." He then changed his clothes, bid farewell to the lady and
young lady, and said, "I entrust the affairs of the household to you; I cannot go into details."
The lady and young lady saw him off with tears in their eyes, overwhelmed with sorrow. Just then, the servant rushed in and said, "It's terrible! Master, you've just
left the city gate when the bandits started burning and looting on all sides. Meixiang, quickly ask the lady and young lady to change their clothes and go to Duzhuangzi in Nanshan
to wait." They heard gongs and shouts outside, and the lady and young lady, leading the servant and Meixiang, fled the city with the others
. But let's leave that aside for now. Now, let's talk about
Hua Xingyun. Since parting with Huo Sheng, he has been constantly haunted by thoughts of
him, as he hasn't received any news. He pondered repeatedly, "I wonder if he's returned to Maoling, or perhaps wandering elsewhere? There's still no news about the matter concerning those poems and essays. I can't get any concrete information
to send him, which only adds to my distress. Wait a minute, he left alone the other day, leaving his luggage here. Nothing else matters
, but his poems and essays, and the writings from the examinations—these reveal a talented man's beautiful heart. I must get him a clear understanding of them and
put them away properly." Just as he finished putting them away, he suddenly heard a knock at the door.
Upon opening the door, she said, "It's Master Xianyu! I'm so sorry to have troubled
you the other day." Xiansheng asked, "Yunniang, how have things been at home these past few days?" Xingyun replied, "What's good about it? I was just about to ask. Has there been any news since Huo Lang left
?" Xiansheng laughed, "Good heavens, I knew you'd ask that right away! The news is here."
Xingyun asked happily, "Where is he now?" Xiansheng said, "Oh! You don't know? He's right over there."
Xingyun looked ahead and said, "I can't see him?" Xiansheng stepped forward and hugged her, saying, "Here he is!" He smiled
and said, "Huo Xiufu and I are very close, you know..." "It was originally one person. And now you and I are the same,
just like that!" Xingyun pushed him away, saying, "What are you talking about? How shameless! You shamelessly pester me like this." Xiansheng
said, "Your families have old customs, like the old ones who are close to the new, and you have old rules for calling Zhang and embracing Li. Why be so rigid?"
Xingyun said, "Don't misunderstand. Huo Lang and I burned incense before the Buddha and made a vow that we
would never forget each other after becoming husband and wife." Xiansheng said, "If he can do it, I, Old Xian, can do it too." Xingyun said, "You are so unreasonable!
Since you say you are close to Huo Lang, how come he has already tried to deceive and sow discord between us as soon as he gets up? Please! Please! Please!" Xiansheng said,
"Alright, please come into the room."
Xingyun pushed Xiansheng out the door and quickly closed it. Xianyu Ji angrily said, "Oh dear, how shameless! It
really has come to this. Bah! Hua Xingyun, Hua Xingyun! You're still dreaming! You're still thinking about Huo Duliang, hoping to renew
your old alliance, but who knew he had trouble and would never return." Suddenly, the innkeeper ran over and said, "Master
Xianyu, something terrible has happened! The city of Chang'an is being burned and looted by bandits, and everyone is fleeing. You should go back to
your lodgings, pack your belongings, and move them. We old men are all fleeing for our lives and can't take care of you." They heard shouts again, and the two
hurriedly left.
Meanwhile, the lady and young lady of the Li family, leading Meixiang and carrying their luggage and scrolls, hurriedly left the city,
following the fleeing people east and west, when they were suddenly scattered by bandits. An Lushan's vanguard, He Qiannian, having witnessed Geshu Han's defeat, seized
the opportunity to rush into Tongguan. He said, "However, the Tianxiong Jiedushi, Jia Nanzhong, has led five thousand elite cavalry,
closely pursuing us via the Shangnan Trail. They are truly formidable. Soldiers, we cannot linger in Chang'an. Quickly plunder the women, children, gold, and jewels
, and then head towards Longxi to attack." The crowd responded, "Yes, sir!" Thus, the people of Chang'an were terrified. Some fled
, others fled in panic, many families were separated, but we will leave that aside for now.
Now, the military governor Jia Nanzhong said, "Previously, because the rebel army was causing trouble, I led a large force to guard Hulao Pass to prevent them from sneaking up
on Chang'an. Who knew that General Geshu would suffer a defeat, and the rebels would take advantage of the situation to seize Tongguan Pass? It's truly hateful! Therefore, I led five thousand iron
cavalry, marching day and night, in hot pursuit. Fortunately, we have reached Ba Shang. Soldiers, let's temporarily set up camp here and wait for the scouts
to arrive and give us news before making further plans." The soldiers replied, "Understood."
Before long, they heard the sound of copper bells and the neighing of horses' hooves. A soldier reported, "Sir, the scouts have arrived."
Upon entering the camp, the military governor asked, "How is the enemy's situation now? Tell me slowly." The scout replied, "The government troops marched
ten li to the west and engaged the enemy in a fierce battle. Our troops won a great victory, and He Qiannian was defeated and fled westward." Military Governor Jia said:
"Good news, good news!" the scout said again. "But General Geshu's defeated troops are kidnapping people's children in the city, which is a
problem." Jia Jiedu said, "In that case, quickly send a command arrow. If any government troops kidnap people or property,
report it immediately. If they take in children who have fled, return them to their families and report them in a register. Do not hide them."
After the scout left with the order, Jia Jiedu said, "This is hateful. How come the bandits fled west, but the remnants of Geshu's camp
are so disrespectful?" Just then, someone reported, "Reporting to the lord, the command arrows have been sent to all the camps. Those women who were taken in and
recognized have been returned to their families. There are only two women among them. One is said to be a young lady from a wealthy family, but no one recognizes her. The other
is a disabled old woman with nowhere to be taken in. Please give your order, sir!" Jia Jiedu said, "In that case, first call
the young lady from a wealthy family here. I will ask her about her background before I can release her."
The soldiers obeyed and called the woman over. Jia Jiedu glanced at her and said, "Judging from this woman's demeanor, she
is indeed from your household. Where do you live? What is your family? Please explain in detail, and I will investigate and send you back."
Miss Feiyun, blushing, tearfully replied, "To be honest, my father is the current Minister of Rites, Li Shangshu, whose given name is An Dao."
Jia Jiedu exclaimed in surprise, "Ah! So you are my brother Li Nian's daughter? Brother Li Nian! I always pitied your sonlessness
, and now your daughter has suffered such misfortune. Miss, your father and I are very close classmates. I sent him a letter this spring to inquire
after him; do you know that?"
Feiyun thought for a moment and said, "Sir, could you perhaps be Jiedu Jia?" "?" Jia Jiedu said, "Indeed." Feiyun
said, "This spring, a messenger came to inquire about my father and received a scroll of Wu Daozi's Guanyin painting. I still remember it."
Jia Jiedu said, "That must be my brother Li Nian's daughter. Now, with the army in disarray and your father still on the front lines, you
are all alone. Even if I send you back to your residence, there will be no one to take care of you. I intend to take you as my daughter and send you back after the situation is pacified.
What do you think?" Feiyun said, "I have heard my father say that he and you are as close as siblings; seeing you today
is like seeing my father! But this kindness and virtue is impossible to repay!" She then bowed four times and stood up
. Jia Jiedu accepted the greeting and said, "But the army is short of a woman to serve us. What should we do? Your men said earlier that there was an
old woman; could you please bring her here?" The servant replied, "Understood."
A short while later, a hunchbacked old woman carrying a bundle of scrolls approached, bowed, and then, upon seeing
Feiyun, said, "Ah! This is Miss Li! What are you doing here? I was just looking for you. I witnessed Meixiang
being murdered among the rebels, and she left this bundle here to give to you." Feiyun, upon hearing this, burst into tears. Jia Jiedu said, "So
you recognize this old woman?" Feiyun said, "She's a healer; I've used her medicine before." Jia Jiedu said, "In
that case, she can stay in the army to keep you company." The hunchbacked old woman thanked him. Jia Jiedu said, "You've had a
difficult journey amidst the chaos; come and rest in our room! I'll go to the front camp to inspect the troops." He then left.
Meng Ma also returned to the room with the young lady. The two met, but what did they say? To be continued in the next chapter.
Chapter Twelve: The Lady Mistakenly Recognizes Her Own Daughter; The Scholar Invites a New Guest.
It is said that Miss Li arrived at the room and asked, "Mother Meng, after taking your medicine the other day, I felt better
. Who would have thought that we would meet again here amidst this chaos?" The old woman said, "Don't mention it again; it's a long story!
Miss, Meixiang told me in detail the reason for your illness." Miss asked, "What reason?" The old woman said,
"It's because of the painting." Miss smiled slightly. Meng Po said, "To tell you the truth, there really is a
Mr. Huo in Maoling, named Huo Duliang, who came to ask me to look at his glass." The young lady asked, "What kind of person is Huo Duliang?" Meng
Po smiled and said, "That's the first thing that came to your mind, and it just slipped out without you realizing it. You ask what he's like
? His appearance is almost exactly like the one in this painting. Also, your letter was carried away by a swallow, and on
the Qujiang River embankment, it landed right in front of him, neither east nor west, neither high nor low, and he picked it up." The young lady said:
"This is truly bizarre," said Granny Meng. "When I was seeing the doctor, he took it out and told me to return it to you in exchange for the wrong copy of '
Spring Beauty.' I kept it with me, never imagining it would become a source of trouble. Those barbarian soldiers captured me, accusing
me of colluding with them to pull strings and pull strings. It took a lot of trouble to finally let me go." The young lady said, "That's so kind of you,
Granny. Where is Scholar Huo now?" Granny Meng said, "When Scholar Huo heard he had captured me, he
ran away in fear."
Hearing this, the young lady burst into tears and said, "Since he's wandering, it's hard to say what fate holds." Granny Meng smiled and said, "But
..." "There's something I can't tell you," said Meng Po. The young lady asked, "What is it that you can't tell me?" Meng Po replied, "That scholar Huo
is quite the ladies' man. He's having an affair with a courtesan named Hua Xingyun. This painting, 'Spring Beauty,' was painted for him
. Hua Xingyun looks exactly like you, but you've mistaken her for someone else and thought it was painted for you." The young lady said, "No wonder
when I first saw her, seeing her so charming, I guessed she was a courtesan." Meng Po said, "Miss,
you're already suffering from lovesickness. Don't get jealous and ruin your health." The two laughed together
, but that's another story.
Meanwhile, Hua Xingyun, carrying her bundle and the painting, fled with the others. She said, "Ah! We've reached Xingqing Pond.
Heavens! Since leaving Chang'an, I haven't walked more than a few miles, why can't I go any further? Let me sit here in the grass.
Huo Lang! Huo Lang! Where are you now? In this chaos, you've abandoned me here alone, how miserable I am!"
Just as she was thinking, she suddenly saw an old woman approaching in the distance. Who was this woman? It was none other than Lady Li. She
called out, "Feiyun, where have you gone? Even Meixiang has disappeared without a trace." Suddenly she looked up and said,
"Ah! Look, sitting on the grassy slope ahead, that's clearly my daughter. Thank heavens!" When she reached her, Xingyun
rose and bowed. The lady said, "Don't bow, don't bow, my child. You, as a young lady, have never suffered such hardship
. I'm so sorry. Where is Meixiang?" Xingyun said, "Mother, I don't understand what you're saying."
The lady exclaimed in surprise, "What do you mean? You're not a young lady?" She looked at him more closely, "You are clearly my Feiyun!"
Xingyun said, "I am not Feiyun. My humble surname is Hua, and my given name is Xingyun. I live by the Qujiang River. I am a child of a humble family..."
My parents died when I was young. Could my mother have mistaken me for someone else? "The lady said, 'Judging from his voice, it is indeed somewhat different.'
Then she burst into tears, saying, 'How come your face is so similar? Only the rosy blush on your cheeks is different. Young lady,
to tell you the truth, I am the wife of Lord Li of the Ministry of Rites. I fled with Miss Feiyun, but we were separated by the bandits.
I don't know where my daughter is. Seeing that you look just like him, I insisted on calling you my daughter.
I'm sorry for my mistake!' Xingyun said, 'So you are an old lady. My apologies! My apologies!' After bowing, she turned her back and said,
'His daughter is named Li Feiyun. Oh, I remember now, the person who wrote the inscription on the painting is Feiyun. Mama Meng once said that she looks
just like me, so you mistook me for her.' The lady said, 'Young lady, seeing you is like seeing my own daughter
. Could you accompany me on the journey? When we get home, we can recognize each other as daughters. What do you think?' Xingyun said,
'Thank you, old lady, but I'm afraid I don't have that honor!' Then she bowed deeply." The lady helped him up, saying, "It's getting late,
we'll have to keep going."
Just as they were about to walk hand in hand, they suddenly heard the sound of gongs. The lady and Xingyun exclaimed in surprise, "Look at the commotion of people and horses, they've
been ravaged by the chaotic army again." Little did they know, it was Minister Li returning. The master gave an order: "Guards,
there are two women on that grassy slope. Bring them to me." The lady stepped forward, and the minister recognized her, saying, "Ah! Madam and daughter,
what are you doing here?" The lady wept and said, "In the chaos of the army, my daughter got lost." The minister said, "My daughter is standing right
beside you. How can you say she got lost?" The lady said, "This is not my daughter." The minister said, "If it's not my daughter
, then who is she?" The lady said, "My husband, we met her on the road. Her surname is Hua, and her name is Xingyun. She looks
just like my child." After saying this, she cried again, "My daughter was separated from us by the chaotic soldiers at the Qingchi intersection. I don't know where she went."
Upon hearing this, the minister burst into tears, saying, "This is heartbreaking!" Xingyun then stepped forward and bowed.
Upon seeing her, the Minister cried again, "How can she look so much like a girl? Since that's the case, let's adopt this girl and treat her as
our own daughter, then go and find Feiyun." The Lady said, "That's what I thought too, and she's already agreed. Husband,
you've only been in Lingwu for a few days, why are you back already?" The Minister said, "After seeing the Emperor, he sent me back to offer sacrifices at the suburban
temples and mountains. Who knew my family would be destroyed and my child lost? Isn't this a sin from my past life?"
Xingyun knelt and kowtowed again, saying, "I'm a wanderer with no roots, and I wish to be your concubine. I'm deeply grateful for your kindness in recognizing me
as your daughter. What an honor! Father, don't worry now. When you can't find my sister, quickly write down notices and stick them along the way
. She's probably not far from Chang'an." The Minister said, "Yes! Madam, take your daughter home first, and I'll
return to the manor later." Let's leave that aside for now.
Meanwhile, Magistrate Qin Ruoshui of Yang County, due to the An Lushan Rebellion, led his men in guarding the city with great utmost vigilance, constantly advising and
working tirelessly. One day, he gave some instructions from the city wall, saying, "Be careful here, I'll go down and rest for a while." The men
replied, "Understood." Suddenly, they saw a scholar approaching from afar. Who was he? It turned out to be Huo Xiufu, who had fled here during the rebellion.
He said, "Since leaving Chang'an, I have escaped the net of tyranny, but my fate has been fraught with misfortune, encountering danger at
every turn. Bandits roamed the roads, and government troops plundered. Fortunately, I was poor and alone, which saved my life, and I have made my way to Yangcheng." The city
was heavily guarded, so he couldn't act rashly. He asked the man on the rampart, "Brother on the rampart, is your magistrate, Lord Qin, on
the rampart?"
The man on the rampart shouted, "Where are you from? Why are you asking about Lord Qin?" Huo Sheng replied, "Please inform him
that a student from Maoling named Huo has come to pay his respects." The men said, "Judging from his appearance, he is refined and cultured.
Giving him a word should be fine." They then went down the rampart and reported, "Sir, there is a
student below the rampart named Huo, from Maoling, who wishes to see you." Magistrate Qin understood and said, "Quickly, pull him up
."
The men then lowered the ropes and hoisted Huo Sheng onto the rampart, where the two met. Master Qin said, "My dear friend, you
were taking the imperial examination in Chang'an, how did you suddenly end up here?" Huo Sheng replied, "It's a long story." He then
briefly recounted how he had mistakenly entered a wealthy household to paint the "Spring Scene," accidentally picked up a letter, and caused trouble by leaking the information. Magistrate Qin said, "
I don't know the details of what you just said. Let's go to the yamen together and discuss it in detail. I'm glad you are a man of both literary and military talent. You've been wandering around for a while, so
I can consult you on many matters." The two returned to the yamen.
A swift rider approached from the city wall. The guards, bows drawn, asked, "Who are you?" The rider replied,
"Don't shoot! I am the first envoy sent by Marshal Jia. I have a command token and a fire token here. Instruct all prefectures and counties to prepare provisions quickly
. I will personally lead five thousand iron cavalry to pursue and annihilate the rebels. I will arrive here tonight, without delay!"
The soldiers received the token, and Lord Qin verified it before issuing it, saying, "It is indeed Commander Jia's first envoy. Tell him that all provisions
are prepared. Guards, ask him again, is Commander Jia from Xingzhou?" The soldiers understood and replied,
"He is indeed from Xingzhou." Lord Qin said to Huo Sheng, "Congratulations! Congratulations! Commander Jia is a fellow townsman and a close friend of mine. With him
here, our isolated city is safe. Let us drink and reminisce."
It was just as the poem goes: "
I trim the silver candle by the west window, the sound of the reed pipe drifts out in the moonlight. "
What will Commander Jia do upon arriving? Let's find out in the next chapter.
Chapter Thirteen: Joining the Army and Writing a Proclamation to Courage the Bandits; The Military Governor Appreciates Talent and Grants a Marriage Alliance
. It is said that Military Governor Jia, dressed in military uniform, led his troops to the tent. He sat down and said, "I personally led my cavalry to □yang.
Fortunately, Magistrate Qin Ruoshui, a fellow villager and friend, hosted a banquet for me, and we talked all night until dawn. Since I needed a secretary in my staff,
I asked him to inquire about hiring one. He said that there happens to be a student in the yamen, a scholar from Maoling, who is both talented and
resourceful. He has been studying here and could be of great use. I will send someone to invite him to the front lines so he can see for himself and decide whether to retain him." A man holding a notebook
knelt down and said, "This humble official is from the county. Reporting to Your Excellency: Magistrate Qin has
gone to distribute provisions to the various camps outside the city. The scholar from Maoling I mentioned to Your Excellency last night has instructed me to bring him here. He
is currently outside the gate and dares not enter without permission." Commander Jia said, "I troubled your lord last night. There's no need for you to come today. I
will immediately ride to the ten-mile pavilion to meet you. Please invite the scholar from the yamen in." The messenger departed.
Now, when Huo Sheng arrived, he had been planning all the way: "I have endured many hardships, but fortunately I have arrived in [location name]; moreover, I was recommended by Teacher Qin
to serve in the staff of Governor Jia, and someone came to invite me to meet him. I wonder how that matter will end? The other day I heard about those people..."
They also need to send a letter to my hometown to arrest me. Therefore, I told Teacher Qin yesterday that when speaking to Master Jia, he absolutely must not mention my name.
If he asks about my place of origin or surname today, I must give him the answer. I'll just change it so there's no more taboo. Alright
, I'll just change it to Bian Wuji.” Hearing the summons, he had no choice
but to enter the tent and bow. Master Jia said, “Sir, you are a man of great talent, it is an honor to have you grace us with your presence. May I ask your esteemed name?”
Huo Sheng said, “My surname is Bian, and my given name is Wuji. I am mediocre and incompetent, and I am deeply ashamed to have been recommended.” Master Jia said:
"No need for such modesty, sir. Although An Lushan has fled to Chang'an, he is now eyeing Longyou. I command only five thousand cavalry.
How can we defeat such a large force with such a small force?" Huo Sheng replied, "In my humble opinion, although the rebels are fierce and aggressive, they are no different from beasts. Your Excellency
should hold Longzhou firmly and maintain a cautious approach. An Lushan is a cruel and treacherous old man who has lost the hearts of the people. Even his illegitimate son and adopted son harbor
resentment. It would be best to write a secret proclamation, put it in a wax pellet, and send it to your trusted confidants." "I hereby issue this decree, promising to redeem Tu's father and reward him accordingly
. These wolves in sheep's clothing are sure to devour each other. This single document is far superior to a thousand armies, enabling us to recover the Hehuang region and welcome back the Emperor—
a feat unparalleled in history. I urge Your Excellency to consider this carefully."
Upon hearing this, Jia Gong bowed and thanked him, saying, "Your wise advice is truly admirable. I will trouble you to write this proclamation."
Huo Sheng replied, "I will take care of it." He picked up the brush and wrote it in a short while. Lord Jia took the document, read it once
, and said, "The proclamation is excellent. Send a trusted confidant to secretly deliver it to this traitor. Thanks to your brilliant strategy, if we
succeed, I will certainly report it to the emperor and request that he be given a high position. Now, keeping him in the front camp will allow me to consult with him day and night." He ordered the flag officer,
"Quickly allocate supplies and servants to serve Military Advisor Bian in the front camp. Do not neglect him!" The others responded, "Yes, sir." Huo
Sheng talked with Lord Jia for a while longer before taking his leave and returning to the front camp.
Meanwhile, Lady Li often missed her daughter, and said to Xingyun, "Since the chaos of war, I have grown old and ill, and I rely on you to
keep me company day and night. But since we parted, I have searched everywhere for Feiyun, but there has been no trace of her. How can I not weep
? Look, autumn is deepening, the wind is rustling through the window, how desolate it is. I wonder where she is now? How can I not worry
!" Xingyun said, "Mother, the other day the rebel soldiers were causing trouble, but it didn't last long. I heard that the military governor
has issued strict orders, personally inquiring about the lost children. My sister must have found her. Mother, please..." "Please don't worry," the lady
said. "Every year at this time, it's the time for giving out new clothes, but alas, the things remain while the person is gone
. How can I bear the moon rising over the paulownia tree, the sound of the pestle striking the ground, where can one not feel sorrow? I'll go in and rest, my child, come in a little later." Xingyun said, "I understand." He sent
the lady in, and then said, "Don't talk to another sorrowful person about their own sorrows, for talking about sorrow is enough to kill you. My mother only knows her own worries
, how could she know that I am not without my own worries either? But the other day on the way, in my haste,
I put this Guanyin painting in my bundle, I wonder what happened to it?" He couldn't help but take it out and hang it up. Unfolding the painting, he said, "I'm glad it's undamaged.
Let me burn incense and offer my thanks. There's also Huo Lang's writing in the bundle, I need to check it with him again. Ah!
I'm glad that the manuscript and the writings from the scene were not lost. It's getting late, I should pack up and go to my room." It was truly:
How much longing and yearning in one night, even the ends of the earth are not far enough.
Meanwhile, several patrolmen under An Lushan's command said, "Guys, it's so cold and windy here. The King
is enjoying himself with lamb and fine wine, surrounded by beautiful women, while we suffer in this cold and desolate place. It's almost midnight
, the scouts have all passed, let's buy a jug and drink it all away." The patrolmen drank merrily, but that's another story.
Meanwhile, Li Zhu'er, having received a proclamation from Marshal Jia, was ordered by the young general to assassinate that old traitor in the camp.
He went with the messenger to the camp gate. Hearing the watchtower's drum strike the third watch, and seeing the patrolling soldiers lying drunk on the ground, Li Zhu'er happily said to the officer, "
The thief's life is over now! I'll go in, and you can wait here quietly. If I kill the old thief, I'll throw
his head down from here, and you can take it to report your success." The officer said, "That's right."
Not long after Li Zhu'er left, he suddenly called out quietly, "Officer! Officer! The old thief's head is here!" Then he jumped
down and said, "The head is here." The officer said, "How can you tell it's the old thief's head? There's no proof." Li Zhu'er
said, "The old thief always kept the money given to the Imperial Concubine for her baby's first bath tightly to his chest. I took it and tied it to my hair;
that's proof. You can take advantage of this dim moonlight and rush to Longzhou to report to Marshal Jia. I'll set
fire to the camp to scatter all their soldiers." The officer said, "Excellent." He then put the head in his bag, whipped his horse, and
rode away. Li Zhu'er set fire to the camp and shouted, "The central camp is on fire! Why aren't you putting it out? Are you still sleeping here
?" The patrolmen were startled awake and exclaimed, "It's terrible! It's terrible! How could such a large fire break out in the central camp? Everyone, get up
and put out the fire!" They then hurriedly left.
Meanwhile, Huo Sheng, who had offered his advice to Jia Gong, was still puzzled as to his whereabouts. He said, "I changed my name
and, fortunately, no one noticed. But after the chaos in Chang'an, I don't know how Hua Xingyun is doing. There's been no news at all. Although I have kept the letter from Miss Li
here, I don't know where she is. Look at the withered yellow flowers and falling leaves, it's so depressing."
Just as he was hesitating, Jia Gong approached and said, "Mr. Bian, a messenger arrived this morning. Sure enough, the letter arrived.
That wicked son, An Qingxu, secretly sent his trusted man, Li Zhu'er, to assassinate Lushan." "The official has already presented his head. Fortunately,
the great evil has been eliminated, and the remaining turmoil can be swept away; all this is thanks to you, sir! Today, I hereby appoint you as a military advisor in the army, and I have already
submitted a memorial to the throne. You will soon be promoted. Attendants, bring me your official hat and belt."
Huo Sheng put on his hat and belt, bowed to thank Governor Jia, and said, "This is the great fortune of the court and the esteemed reputation of Your
Excellency. What merit have I, a mere mortal, had to receive such preferential treatment?" Governor Jia said, "What are you saying?" He then thought to himself, "I see that Bian Sheng is proficient in both literature and martial arts..." "
He is exceptionally talented and handsome, so it's only natural that I'd arrange for him to marry into the Li family; and when Brother Li sees such a fine son-in-law in the future, he certainly won't blame me for my presumption. " He then said to Huo Sheng, "I have something else to tell you: I have a young daughter who is with the army. She has reached marriageable age but has not yet chosen a husband. I dare to offer my services; please do not hinder this fortunate event. Tomorrow is an auspicious day for their wedding." Huo Sheng said, "I am deeply grateful for your kindness, but I have a previous marriage pact with a woman from Qujiang. How could I possibly change my mind and break my promise?" The military governor said... "You have never mentioned having a family before, this is clearly an excuse, making me lose face." Huo Sheng said, "We are indeed engaged, how could I refuse?" Jia Jiedu said, "I think after the chaos in Chang'an, the fate of this woman is unknown . We should search for her and bring her back in the future. As I said today, my daughter is willing to be with him regardless of age." Huo Sheng said, "Let me consider it some more." Jia Jiedu said, "No need to consider it." He called to his men, "Order the soldiers..."

"Tomorrow, we'll hold a banquet with drums and music, and have the best men serve us." Having said this
, he took his leave and turned away. Huo Sheng said, "If I don't accept, I'll betray Lord Jia's kindness; if I accept, I'll break our previous agreement. Lord Jia only agreed to one thing, which is reasonable. Let's go this way;
it shouldn't be a problem. Let it be."
How the marriage will take place remains to be seen; let's find out in the next chapter.
(Chapter Fourteen: The Handsome Young Man's Wedding in the Army, the Old Camel Woman's Plea)
It is said that Meng Po was fortunate that Commander Jia stayed in the camp to accompany the young lady, thus saving her life. He said, "Recently, Master Jia
wanted to marry Miss to Military Advisor Bian, but Miss was reluctant and instructed me to persuade her. That Military Advisor is
exceptionally handsome and talented, a perfect match for Miss, so I told him not to object. I think even Miss's life was saved by Master Jia; otherwise,
in the chaos of war, who knows where she would be now? He has good intentions, why be so stubborn? I couldn't help but go and persuade him."
Upon seeing Miss, he said, "Master Jia instructed me to tell Miss that she is the only one in his army, and he often has to
patrol various camps, making it inconvenient for him to look after her." Master Li, in a hurry, could not find her whereabouts, and now
he had no choice but to act expediently. There was a military advisor named Bian, of similar age and appearance, and skilled in both literature and martial arts, who wanted her to marry into his family. Yesterday, he told Miss that you had not agreed, and asked me to persuade you
to make it happen.
Upon hearing this, Miss burst into tears and said, "Mother, I have been wandering all my life, and I am grateful to Master Jia for taking me in. How could I dare to disobey his words
? But my dear parents are nowhere to be found, how can I have the leisure to find a husband for them? Besides, the six rites have not
been completed, and there is no matchmaker, so I am hesitant." Meng Po said, "This is a matter of a hundred years..." "Good thing, no need to hesitate.
Master Jia also said that he and his husband are like brothers, and he treats you like his own daughter. Because the son-in-law
is so excellent, this opportunity cannot be missed, and he would never want to ruin your life's important matter. He is the matchmaker, so Miss,
please follow my advice and agree." The young lady said, "Mother, since that's how it is, we can only leave it to Master Jia."
Meng Po said, "Then go and tell Master Jia. But I am a disabled person and single, so it's inconvenient for me to come in tomorrow, the wedding night.
I will see you the day after tomorrow." "I'll get back to you soon." The young lady said, "Mother Meng has left, but my heart is heavy
. First, I can't bear to marry without my parents' knowledge; second, the person in that scroll of 'Spring Beauty' must be severed from now on, and
we'll never see each other again. Since our fate is sealed here, how could that painting be wrongly placed in my possession? I wrote the inscription, but how did the swallow
carry it to Huo Lang? These two strange things are now just empty promises. I can't help but take out the painting and look at it again."
After looking at it for a long time, she said sadly, "Huo Lang, Huo Lang! If we are to meet again, it will only be in the next life; 'Spring Beauty,'
'Spring Beauty,' I bid you farewell today, and I will never be able to admire it again." It is truly:
Let's not say that our fate in this life has ended, but let's hope to form a bond in the next life.
The next day, Master Jia instructed, "The auspicious hour has arrived. Summon the best man to officiate the ceremony and invite Miss and Military Advisor Bian to
marry. But there is one more thing: today is an auspicious day, so tell that old woman with the hunchback, who is single and disabled, to temporarily
avoid the ceremony." Those around him responded, "Understood." The best man, adorned with flowers and red ribbons, was summoned and began the ceremony. The two came out, bowed
to Heaven and Earth, and then exchanged vows. Master Jia ordered them to be led to the bridal chamber. After the nuptial cup ceremony, candles were hung high, and the couple sat down.
Huo Sheng, upon seeing Miss's face, was startled. Ah! It was clearly Yun Niang! He blurted out, "Miss, could you perhaps be Hua…?"
He stopped abruptly. Turning his back, he said, "Don't be so presumptuous! How can Yunniang be here! If it were
her, she shouldn't be so shy, but her appearance is just like hers." He looked again carefully and exclaimed in a panic, "I almost mistook her! Yunniang
has a peach-pink petal on her cheek, but this one doesn't. I remember the old doctor saying that Miss Li was just like Yunniang, but now
this Miss Jia has appeared, making her the third one."
Miss Li also stole a glance at the military advisor and said, "Bian Lang seems to be someone I know well every day." After thinking for a moment,
she said, "That's it! The one in the red dress in the painting looks just like him. But that person's name is Du Liang, not Bian." Just as
she was guessing, Huo Sheng said, "It's late, Miss, let's sleep together." It was just like: "In the
glow of the candlelight, under the green oil curtain, we met before the lamp, was it really him?"
The two of them spent the whole night in blissful intimacy, but let's leave that aside for now.
Now, after the An Lushan Rebellion was quelled, the people gradually returned to peace. The examination results had not yet been announced. Suddenly, news arrived that the results would be announced today,
and all the messengers waited in front of the Ministry of Rites. The official carrying the list of names approached, and soon it was displayed high above.
The person copying the names shouted, "First place, first place: Xianyu Ji, from Fufeng, Shaanxi. So the top scholar is here! Go to the Fufeng Guild Hall
to report! Children, here's the slip of paper. Hurry up and go!"
However, Xianyu Ji, due to the turmoil of war, had left his old residence in Yaodian and moved to the Fufeng Guild Hall. He had inquired with the Ministry of Rites and learned that the list
would be released at dawn. He anxiously wondered, "Why is there still no sign of him? Listen to the magpies in the trees, they're chirping so
happily!" Suddenly, a group of messengers ran up and asked, "Is that Master Xianyu?" Xianyu asked, "Where is he ranked?"
The messengers replied, "He's the top scholar." Xianyu was delighted and said, "Quickly, bring me the slip of paper!" The messengers presented it.
Xianyu Ji, seeing that it was true, said, "Come and drink a cup of celebratory wine with me; I will certainly not be stingy with the reward." Another group of
people, carrying official hats and belts, saw Xianyu Ji, kowtowed, and said, "We are here to welcome Scholar Xianyu to the Qionglin Banquet." Xianyu Ji
said, "Get up and receive your reward, then come with me to the banquet." Now, let's leave aside the story of Xianyu Ji, who cheated by changing his name and became the top scholar,
believing it to be his due, and was overjoyed.
After her wedding, Miss Li showed some displeasure, saying, "Since being adopted by Master Jia, who treated me like his own daughter
and even found me a good husband, I am still far from my parents' side. My wedding night is still quite lonely. Today, I can only reluctantly dress
and groom myself. You see, he looks thinner these past few days. I look closely at Bian Lang's face; he is just like the man in the painting,
but his surname is Huo, not Bian. I want to tell him about our family history, but as husband and wife, I am still
a little shy." "
But Huo Sheng also said behind her back, "I looked closely at the bride's face, and she is exactly like Hua Xingyun. Last night
under the lamp, I almost said it wrong. Is there really such a resemblance in the world? I remember the old doctor said, 'Miss Li also looks like
Yunniang. I'm afraid she does, but only slightly. How can there be someone like Miss Jia, who is indistinguishable from her?'" Upon seeing
Feiyun, he said, "Madam, you are washing up here." Feiyun replied, "Indeed." So they sat down and chatted.
Meanwhile, Meng Po, who had avoided the wedding last night, came out this morning and said, "Last night was Miss's wedding. As I had said,
I avoided the auspicious time and did not go to the bridal chamber. I heard that the groom, Military Advisor Bian, is indeed handsome and the bride is beautiful. "
Master Jia was quite pleased, and since there was no hindrance today, he decided to visit the young lady's room.
Upon entering and seeing the groom, he exclaimed in surprise, "You're Master Huo! How dare you! This is the young lady's bridal chamber !
How dare you barge in like this, be so intimate? What kind of manners are these? If Military Advisor Bian sees this, things will get very complicated!"
He pushed Huo Sheng, saying, "This is no joke! Get out! Get out!"
Miss Feiyun was also surprised, saying, "Mother, this is Military Advisor Bian, why do you call him Master Huo?" Meng Po said,
"Miss, I'm not mistaken, this is Huo Duliang. He's the one who asked me to treat his illness. Master Huo, I
suffered a lot for you over a poem, you have no idea!" The young lady said, "This is strange! If you're Huo Lang, why is your surname Bian?"
Huo Sheng smiled and said, "I am indeed Huo Duliang. There's a reason I changed my surname, let me explain." The young lady said:
"I don't believe it! If it's Huo Duliang, Mother, is it you who said that I had a poem on a piece of paper that a swallow carried away, and that he
found it? Where is it now?" Huo Sheng said, "I have a poem on a piece of paper, and it was indeed carried away by a swallow
. It was written by Li Feiyun, and has nothing to do with you, Madam."
He took out the paper and handed it to the young lady, saying, "This was written by Miss Li. Please take a closer look." Meng Po said, "Master Huo,
are you still dreaming? This is Miss Li, named Feiyun. Where did this Miss Li come from?" Huo Sheng said, "She is Master Jia's
daughter. How come she has the surname Li?" Feiyun smiled but did not say anything. After a slight hesitation, she said, "Mother, please
explain it to him in detail." Meng Po said, "In the chaos of war, they mistook the young lady for their own daughter." Huo Sheng said, "Pah! I must
be dreaming! My lady was actually adopted by Master Jia, a living Li Feiyun right here, and yet I still
yearn for you day and night? My lady, I mistakenly sent you a painting called 'Spring Beauty,' is it still here?" The young lady took out the painting and
said, "It's here now. Please tell me in detail why I changed my name." Huo Sheng then
recounted the painting of Spring Beauty and the letter. The young lady said, "That's only the first part. I don't understand why I changed my surname to Bian. Please
tell me."
Huo Sheng then explained how he asked Meng Po to exchange a poem for Spring Beauty, but someone leaked the news, accusing him of colluding with others, and he was
extorted by the barbarians, almost getting caught, so he changed his surname to escape. My lady, please also tell me about the letter. Fei
Yun also recounted the scene of the painting being lost. The two explained everything clearly and were exceptionally affectionate. Huo Sheng instructed,
"Wife, Mother, when you are outside the bridal chamber, do not reveal that I am Master Huo; it would be safer to call me Military Advisor Bian."
Meng Po said, "I understand."
Only the three of them understood this matter; the rest will be revealed in the next chapter.
(Chapter Fifteen: The Top Scholar Privately Visits His Teacher, Hua's Adopted Daughter Exposes Her Father's Insult
) Now, the Minister of Rites, Lord Li, said, "I am honored to be in charge of the imperial examinations, and my assessments of the various examination papers have been accurate and have been submitted long ago.
Recently, due to the execution of An Lushan, the victory at Wugong, and the ascension of the Emperor to the throne in Lingwu, peace has been restored. Therefore, the announcement of the results has been supplemented to complete this grand ceremony.
The results were posted yesterday, and according to tradition, the top scholar should come to pay his respects this morning. Attendants, when the new top scholar, Master Xianyu, arrives,
inform him immediately."
Everyone responded, "Understood." Then, Xianyu Ji, in his official robes and riding a horse, arrived and said, "This is..." There, they say, I
, Xianyu Ji, was doing that kind of thing, hoping to get my name on the list and become rich. Who knew I'd snatch first place!
So happy! So happy! "Your Excellency, today it's time to pay respects to the chief examiner, Master Li." The servant reported, "We've arrived at Master Li's gate and
are dismounting to wait." The pass was presented, and the gatekeeper received it, saying, "According to custom, this is our first time meeting the master. Steward and servant,
we have already shown courtesy. Please inform your master that he will grant us an audience." The servant replied. Xianyu Ji said, "Servant, tell them that
this year's top scholar is truly talented and different from the others; even if it weren't for Master Li, someone else would have passed.
After I take office, I'll reward him along with the people of the Grand Secretary."
The servant then told the gatekeeper, who said, "Reward him! Why are you acting like this, so ignorant of the times, putting on
airs in front of your master's door? But the master has instructed us to let him pass." A little while later, someone came out and said, "Please come in."
Xianyu Ji entered the courtyard, paid his respects, and was offered a seat. Xianyu Ji said, "This humble student is honored to be first in your esteemed presence,
but I fear my inadequacy may disgrace your school." Minister Li said, "Your esteemed friend is highly talented; you deserve to be first in my esteem. I am deeply grateful for your favor.
What a great achievement!" The teacher and student were talking in the courtyard when the lady and young lady behind them, hearing that the new top scholar had arrived, secretly
peeked from behind the screen to see who he was. Xing Yunduan glanced at him, then was secretly startled and went inside.
Xianyu Ji, knowing the story of the inscribed letter, indulged in wishful thinking and deliberately said, "I have something to report: To be honest, teacher
, I am currently unmarried. Now, many of you esteemed gentlemen have daughters of suitable marriageable age. I humbly request your guidance, teacher, to
arrange their marriages and help me achieve my goals." Minister Li replied, "I will keep an eye on things." Xianyu Ji took his leave, bowed three times, and left.
Minister Li said, "I will not see you off." He then ordered the servants to quickly invite the lady and young lady out, as he had something to say. Upon receiving the news, the lady and
her daughter came out to meet him. The Minister said, "This year's top scholar is a student of mine; his talent and character are both excellent. Just
now, I asked him if he had a wife. I wish to arrange for this girl to marry him. What do you think?" The lady
replied, "This is a matter of great importance; you may decide as you see fit, sir. Where is this year's top scholar from? What is his name?" The Minister said,
"His name is Xianyu Ji; he is from Fufeng." Xingyun exclaimed, "So it is Xianyu Ji!" and fell into deep thought.
The Minister asked, "My child, what are you pondering?" Xingyun replied, "Father, this man is a rogue, illiterate
, how can you expect him to be the top scholar?" The Minister exclaimed in surprise, "You're a young woman, you
don't concern yourself with worldly affairs. How do you know he's illiterate and a bad person? It's laughable!" Xingyun said, "To be honest, Father, I have a cousin
named Huo Duliang, a learned scholar, and we were classmates. That's why I know his character." Minister Li said,
"I don't care if he's illiterate, a bad person, or a classmate of your cousin. I only care about the fact that his exam paper is
so beautifully written, so I've given him the top spot. Can your father's eyes really be so wrong?" Xingyun said:
"Xianyu Ji's writing is excellent, but it's definitely not his work," the Minister said. "This year's examinations are extremely strict, the examination hall is locked.
If it wasn't him, then who did?"
He angrily took out the examination paper and handed it to his wife: "Let him see. Although he's illiterate, those examination papers are so
neatly marked up. Am I wrong? Are all those examination papers wrong?" Xingyun took the paper,
examined it carefully, and said, "Father, I know a few characters, but every single sentence is my cousin Huo Duliang's."
The scholar said, "How ridiculous! It's Huo Duliang's, how do you know?" Xingyun replied, "My cousin
was ill, so after the examination, he returned to his hometown in Fufeng. He left all his books at my house, and I'm the one who kept the manuscript
here. If you don't believe me, Father, let me take it out and you'll see." He went into the room to retrieve it and said, "Father, please take a look."
The scholar took it, read it, and said, "Indeed, not a single word is wrong. It seems I've been misled by this dog." He stamped his foot and said
, "How could the imperial examination be so careless, allowing him to deceive us? Since it's your cousin's essay, each candidate has their own assigned number in the examination hall.
How could he have copied it? It's hard to understand." Xingyun thought to himself, "No wonder he kept asking Huo Lang about his name after the examination;
there must be a reason." He turned around and said, "Father, let's see what his name is on his paper." The scholar said:
"That's true." He looked at it and said, "It's the character '昃' (Ze)." Xingyun said, "My cousin said it was the character '日' (Ri),
but he must have secretly altered it, adding strokes to the bottom of '日' (Ri)."
The Minister looked again and said, "Look, the '日' (Ri) on top of '昃' is too big, and the strokes below look like they were added. It's clear there was
some kind of tampering. Luckily you're clever enough to expose this fraud; I almost wrongly accused you. How annoying! How annoying!" His wife
said, "My lord, don't worry. Tomorrow, call that bachelor over and give him another interview. If he's indeed a commoner, then we can deal with him accordingly
." The Minister said, "My lady is right. Let's test him like that." It is just as the poem goes: "
On the banks of the Heavenly Weaver Bridge, the autumn shuttle is being trimmed; only the Yellow Maiden can cross the river.
Let's leisurely pour the jade cup at the top, still worried about the broken clay pot at the bottom."
Preparing for the re-examination the next day, Xianyu Ji did not mention it.
Meanwhile, Jia Jiedushi, sitting idly in his camp, said to Huo Sheng, "Military Advisor Bian, the other day you issued a decree to execute the traitor An, and I immediately reported it.
Why haven't I received any news of the imperial edict these past few days?" Huo Sheng replied, "It should arrive sooner or later." Suddenly, a messenger returned to the camp and kowtowed
. Jia Jiedushi said, "You've returned, messenger? What is the edict?" The messenger said, "
Upon receiving the memorial, I heard that His Majesty was overjoyed and that an edict would be issued. Congratulations, sir, and Lord Bian, both have received this favor. The edict is here." Jia Jiedushi took it and
read it; it was the imperial edict:
"An Lushan, the traitor, defied Heaven and defied the common people, and brought about his own capture and execution. Thanks to the loyalty and diligence of your respective garrisons and the dedication of your soldiers
, the villain was subdued and brought to his knees. Except for Guo Ziyi, Li Guangbi, and Xun Guan, who are entitled to be granted fiefdoms and will be granted further appointments, Deputy Marshal Jia
Nanzhong, for his outstanding achievements in suppressing the great traitor, is hereby promoted to the rank of Earl of Shengping, appointed as the Privy Councilor, and promoted to the rank of Pillar of State, and bestowed with a scarlet fish-shaped gold
pouch; Military Advisor Bian Wuji, for his drafting of proclamations and military achievements, is hereby granted the title of Imperial Guard Commandant. All other officers and soldiers are to be given preferential
treatment in their appointments. Nanzhong is to be dispatched to his post immediately. The relevant government office is hereby informed."
Jia Jiedu and Military Advisor Bian expressed their gratitude. Huo Sheng thanked them, saying, "I am deeply grateful to my father-in-law for his recommendation!" Jia Gong said:
"It's all thanks to my son-in-law's praise. However, the imperial decree urges me to take up my post; my son-in-law is a member of the Imperial Guard and must also go to the capital. Today is an auspicious
day, please come out, Miss, so we can set off together." Feiyun came out and bowed, saying, "Father, congratulations!" Jia Jiedu
said, "My child, you've just married, and your husband is already favored; now, with your new post, your family will surely be reunited. Truly, good things
come from heaven, and I am overjoyed." Feiyun said, "It is all thanks to Father that I have this day." Jia Jiedu ordered the central army officers to immediately
break camp and set off for the capital. The journey was filled with joy and celebration, a truly triumphant scene, far beyond what was expected.
It was truly:
The border bugles have cleared the dust of the frontier, the proclamation flies south into the Han palace.
If only the flying general could pursue the fleeing enemy, who in the Hall of Heroes would determine the victories?
We wonder how we will reunite after arriving in the capital; let's find out in the next chapter.
(Chapter Sixteen: A False Scholar Locks Up His Study, Truly Unable to Understand, He Escapes Through
a Dog Hole) Now, Minister Li, having seen through Xianyu Ji's cheating, was furious and said, "I have
failed the Emperor's favor and lost public opinion by selecting Xianyu Ji for this examination, and I have been extremely distressed these past few days. This matter cannot be left ambiguous; a second
examination is necessary, and I must make my own selection. I have already sent someone to summon that dog-headed man. Gatekeeper, come here, and listen to my instructions:
When Xianyu Ji arrives, invite him to sit in the study. Tell him that I haven't been feeling well since leaving the yamen, and that I will be leaving in the evening..." Come out and accompany him. There is a sealed
note; tell him to open and read it himself. It contains several important documents, and I ask him to write them down on his behalf. If he wants to go back,
tell him it was my instruction, and that he may have many things to do at his residence, so he should finish them here. The door must be locked. If you are not allowed to lock the door,
tell him it was my instruction, to prevent strangers from disturbing him, so it must be locked. Be careful in everything! The gatekeeper took the note and
said, "I understand." The Minister went back inside.
Meanwhile, Xianyu Ji, having just won first place in the examination, was beaming with pride. He said, "Today, my fellow graduates invited me, and after a few drinks, I
was enjoying a passionate night with a courtesan. These past few days, the servants have been reporting that Master Li requests a meeting, urging
me several times. I think my teacher
's invitation is probably because he asked me to arrange a marriage the other day, and wanted to discuss it face-to-face. My teacher is a wise and experienced old man; he naturally understands my meaning. Li Feiyun, Li Feiyun, that poem of yours, which was carried away by the swallow
, has ironically become a matchmaker for me, old Xianyu! I am overjoyed!" The servant reported, "Master Li has arrived..." "Master's door."
The gatekeeper said, "Master instructed: The top scholar has arrived, please come directly to the study and sit down." Xianyu Ji smiled and said, "That's
good, it's different from usual, clearly treating me like a favored guest."
After entering the study, the gatekeeper said again, "Master pays his respects, he just felt a little tired and said he would come out to keep you company this evening.
There is a sealed letter here, please open it yourself, top scholar." Xianyu Ji took the letter, and thought happily, "It must
be his daughter's birth certificate. I like the word 'dear' the most. Let me open it." But when he opened it, there wasn't a single
word. Fang exclaimed in surprise, "This doesn't seem like a letter of appointment. What is it? It's so rambling and full of things I don't understand a single word of
." He asked the gatekeeper, "Read it to me." The gatekeeper said, "You've passed the imperial examination with top honors, yet you can't read and have
to ask a humble servant?" Xianyu Ji said, "It's not like that. I've been drinking too much these past few days, and my eyes are blurry
. I can't read clearly. Please read it to me, and I'll understand what the letter is about." The gatekeeper said, "Let me
read it: 'A letter of congratulations on your journey to the west,'..." "A chapter of 'Yuyang Pinggu Chui Ci' and
a poem 'Annotations on the Annotations of the Waterways Classic by My Forefathers.' The master instructed that these three articles are important, and he troubled the top scholar to write them! Write them!"
Xianyu Ji, upon hearing this, panicked and said to him, "Forget it! Forget it! I only said that I was going to meet him today to discuss the marriage, but I didn't expect
to run into this disaster. What should we do? I've got it, gatekeeper. You should inform the master that I have
some business at the yamen. Take it back and finish it tonight, and send it over tomorrow morning, okay?" The gatekeeper said, "The master instructed..."
"Well, I'm afraid the top scholar has many matters to attend to at his office. Please finish here and return. The writing implements are readily available and arranged here."
He straightened the table and chairs, saying, "Please, please!"
Xianyu Ji, growing anxious, cried out, "Oh dear, oh dear! I haven't been feeling well these past few
days and haven't had time to prepare. I need to go for a walk." The gatekeeper said, "No problem. Even the chamber pot is here."
He then closed the door and locked it. Xianyu Ji exclaimed, "The door can't be locked!" The gatekeeper said, "It was the master who ordered that
the door be locked, and that no idlers be allowed to come here and disturb the top scholar's thoughts." Xianyu Ji said, "Why do you keep saying the master ordered
it? You should be more lenient." The gatekeeper said, "Do you know that you should have followed the old rules with us the other day? Why
didn't you be more lenient then? Acting so arrogantly, you're not afraid of killing people. Now you're begging us, your father!" He then left.
Xianyu Ji stamped his feet and said, "What am I going to do? How did I ever know how to do this? Oh, oh, oh!
Now that I have no wings to fly to heaven, I might as well climb over the wall." Just as he was about to climb, he fell down again and said, "I can't even climb
over there, what should I do? I think this matter is too deceitful, even heaven is not allowing me!"
Suddenly, he heard the gatekeeper holding tea and wine, saying, "Scholar, come here, come here!" Xianyu Ji was overjoyed and said, "Thank
heavens, good fortune, good fortune, it seems the gate has been opened to let me out." The gatekeeper said, "Come to the gate, the master
has sent out a teapot and a box from inside. I'm afraid you'll have trouble, so I've sent this servant to bring it
here for you to take in the revolving bucket." Xianyu Ji said, "You said I'm full and can't eat, thank you, but no need!" The gatekeeper said,
"There's something in your stomach." He smiled and said, "If his can't be released, I'll take mine in." Then he
left.
Xianyu Ji hesitated and said, "I think I can't climb over the wall. There's a dog hole ahead; I wonder if I can get through?"
He glanced sideways for a while and said, "It's fierce. This isn't the path the top scholar would take. Now I have no choice but to escape this predicament
; I can't worry about anything else. I'll try to crawl through." He bent down and strained forward, but just as he made it through, he tripped and fell,
causing the dog to bark wildly and run away in a flash. The gatekeeper came over and said, "Why is the dog barking so fiercely? What's the reason?
Oh! Why has so much of the brick wall at the entrance to the hole collapsed? Let me open the door and see."
He looked left and right; where had the top scholar gone? Unable to produce an essay, he slipped away through the cave: "My lord,
please come in!" Minister Li asked, "Has the top scholar finished his essay?" The gatekeeper knelt and reported, "Upon hearing about the essay, the top
scholar panicked and fled through the dog gate; his whereabouts are unknown." The Minister said, "So he hasn't written a single word all day. It's
clear he's failed and will have to submit a memorial for recommendation. Quickly, have the copyist serve him! After I finish, have him
transcribe it immediately. Tomorrow morning, take a note and send it to the eunuch in charge of the Golden Horse Gate, saying I'm ill, and have him put me on the list for immediate summons."
Indeed:
Coral nets are sparse, fish eyes doubt the moon's brilliance.
Not because of success, but because of illness, he has to relinquish his court robes.
After the recommendation, how will Xian Ganji be dealt with? Let's hear the next chapter.
Chapter Seventeen: Long Separation, Joyful Reunion, Each Telling Their Past Stories
. It is said that Jia Nanzhong returned to court in triumph, greatly favored by the emperor. He said, "After the court audience, I've been quite busy with social obligations. I wanted
to tell my fellow scholar
, Lord Li, about how the Li family adopted this daughter of the Li family in my household. Since he requested leave to return to his hometown, he happened to come today, so I'll come over immediately to visit him. I'll tell him in person when he arrives. Attendants, when Lord Li of the Ministry of Rites arrives, please inform him immediately." Meanwhile,
Minister Li arrived from the yamen, and the servants reported, "He has arrived at Lord Jia's gate." After being informed, Lord Jia
came out to greet him. The two exchanged greetings in the courtyard, and then sat down as host and guest, exchanging pleasantries. Master Jia then asked, "My old friend, I'm glad you
're still as handsome as ever. How have you been lately?" Minister Li replied, "I've been on the move for many years, unable to retire. I have no children,
only a pitiful daughter who has been separated from me." Master Jia said, "So your daughter was lost. On my journey, I adopted a girl
. When I asked her place of origin and name, she said it was your daughter, named Feiyun." Minister Li said, "My daughter is indeed named Feiyun
." Master Jia said, "Knowing it was your daughter, I adopted her." Minister Li said happily, "I see. Thank you so much,
brother!" Master Jia instructed, "Quickly, please bring the young lady out. Master Li is here."
The young lady came out, knelt down, and wept bitterly. Feiyun said, "Greetings, Father. Where is Mother now?" Minister
Li replied, "I was fortunate to meet your mother on the way." Miss Li exclaimed, "How delightful! How delightful!" Commander Jia said,
"There is something I must tell you: I have dared to suggest that you also find a son-in-law for me. Your son-in-law is named Bian Wuji, from Maoling
." Miss Li said, "Brother Bian, come quickly!" The military advisor stepped forward and kowtowed to Minister Li.
Minister Li was delighted by his appearance and demeanor. He thanked Commander Jia, saying, "I am very grateful to you for finding such a fine son-in-law." Suddenly,
a court official brought a report saying, "The document submitted by the Master has been approved." Minister Li ordered it to be brought forward. Commander Jia asked
, "May I ask why you submitted this document?" Minister Li replied, "It is for matters related to the imperial examinations."
He then read the imperial decree:
"The Ministry of Rites has submitted a document regarding the simplified examination process. By imperial decree: The imperial examinations are a major event and should be handled with utmost care.
Since Li Dao'an has already conducted the simplified examination himself, he should continue to perform his duties without seeking reprimand. Xianyu Ji has ordered the Ministry of Justice to take him away and thoroughly investigate any doubts. Since the original examination paper's title and format
were indeed written by Huo Duliang, they should be corrected immediately to ensure the success of the ceremony. This is to be known by the relevant authorities."
Upon hearing this, Huo Sheng turned away in surprise, saying, "So Xianyu Ji cut up my paper and came in first! No wonder he
asked me so earnestly about my title and format when he visited me during my illness. What a wicked person! Every word the tutor said to me was correct!"
Feiyun laughed, "Father, now we must find that Huo fellow!" Minister Li said, "The top spot must be
corrected. But in such a hurry, where can we find this person? That's a difficult problem!" Feiyun said: "I know this person,
" said Minister Li in surprise. "My child, how do you know?" Feiyun pulled Huo Sheng aside and said, "Father
, isn't this him? There's no need to look anymore."
Minister Li and Jia Gong were both greatly surprised and said, "What do you mean?" Minister Li said, "Is it really true?" Feiyun
said, "Absolutely true." Minister Li and Jia Gong laughed loudly and said, "Such a strange thing! But ask your son-in-law, why did you change
your name?" Huo Sheng said, "It's hard to say!" Minister Li said, "We are family, so please tell me."
Huo Sheng said, "To tell you the truth, father-in-law, I once painted a picture of a beautiful woman for an acquaintance, but the mounter mistakenly sent it to her."
Minister Li asked, "To whom?" Huo Sheng smiled and pointed to Feiyun and said, "It was mistakenly given to your daughter."
Minister Li asked again, "How did it end up in the wrong place for my daughter?" Feiyun replied, "It's the
Guanyin painting that you and I shared. The house was being framed, and they mistakenly took a painting titled 'Spring Beauty' instead." Minister Li asked again, "
What happened after the mistake?" Huo Sheng said, "When your daughter found the painting, she wrote a short poem about it. This piece of paper was
carried away by a swallow, and I found it while strolling along Qujiang River." Minister Li asked again, "That's strange! But how did you know
it was my daughter who wrote the poem?" Huo Sheng said, "There's a reason for that. Because I was unwell, I asked a female doctor to come and see me.
She told me about these things, and that's how I learned that the painting was mistakenly given to your daughter, and the poem was also written by her." Minister Li said:
"Sure enough, when my daughter was ill, a hunchbacked old woman doctor came with medicine. Was that him?"
Jia Jiedu asked Feiyun, "Isn't that the hunchbacked old woman who accompanies you?" Feiyun replied, "That was indeed him."
Huo Sheng said, "At that time, I entrusted this old woman doctor to return your daughter's poem and retrieve the original painting." Minister Li said, "That's
harmless." Huo Sheng said, "Unexpectedly, the constables found out and accused me of using the old woman doctor as a front, secretly pulling strings, and wanted to
arrest me for questioning. Therefore, to avoid punishment, I changed my name and joined their ranks." Minister Li said, "I was there; how would I know about this
? This isn't some kind of bribery; it was clearly those constables who cheated me. How hateful, how hateful! Do
you still have that poem?" Huo Sheng said, "I have it here."
Minister Li took it, read it once, and said, "This isn't obscene either. It just so happened that a swallow carried it and it fell into my son-in-law's
hands." "Isn't it fate? There's one more thing. My son-in-law has a cousin who was also separated from us during the chaos, and now she's
being raised in my home." Feiyun said, "Congratulations, Father! You've adopted another cousin! How do you know she's
Huo Lang's cousin?" Huo Sheng said, "I have no cousins, how could I have such a cousin?" Minister Li said, "If she
's not your cousin, how could she have collected all three of your son-in-law's writings? Even in this affair with Xianyu Ji, it was he who
discerned it. He said this person was your son-in-law's classmate, but we don't know each other at all. That's why I summoned her for a re-examination and made a simple assessment myself.
If she weren't a cousin, how could I know so much detail?" Governor Jia said, "Brother, our families are related. Why not bring
this girl over for a meeting, and we'll see the truth." Minister Li said, "That makes sense. Attendants, prepare a sedan chair and bring the two young
ladies over!" The servants responded and left. Before long, a report came: "The Second Miss has arrived."
Minister Li went out to greet her and said, "Girl, your sister is fortunate to have met you here, and she is delighted to have arranged for you to marry your cousin,
the newly appointed top scholar Huo Duliang." Xingyun was secretly shocked. Minister Li said, "But the top scholar says he has no relation to you.
Why don't you come forward and see what he thinks?" Xingyun said, "Please invite him to meet at Father's office." Minister Li said,
"Since he is a close cousin, it is fine for him to meet here." Xingyun had no choice but to obey. She went into the courtyard and saw Huo Sheng
. Both of them burst into tears. Minister Li said, "Since you said he is not your cousin, why is it so sad to see him?"
Huo Sheng was crying, but then he laughed. Jia Jiedu asked, "Why are you crying and then laughing?" He said to Minister Li,
"How can this be explained? Neither of us understands the reason." Huo Sheng laughed and said, "To be honest, you two fathers-in-law," pointing
to Xingyun, "this is…," and then fell silent. Minister Li asked, "Who is it?" Huo Sheng said,
"It is my old friend from Pingkang, named Hua Xingyun."
Jia and Li laughed loudly, "Indeed, he should both cry and laugh." Xingyun then bowed to Li and Jia,
and then bowed back to Li Feiyun. Minister Li said, "You've even fooled my mother and me." He turned to Governor Jia and said, "Indeed,
he's an excellent person, unlike someone from such a family." Governor Jia said, "I remember when you were taking him in as your son-in-law, you repeatedly claimed
you had made a vow with a woman from Qujiang. Is this the woman you're talking about?" Huo Sheng said, "That's right. At that time, my father-in-law promised that
when we met again, she and your daughter would be equally matched."
Feiyun asked in surprise, "What do you mean, equally matched? Is that true?" Governor Jia said, "
I did indeed make that promise myself." Minister Li said, "Brother, look how alike they are! No wonder my daughter
mistook that scroll of 'Spring Beauty' for her own; and my wife, in the midst of our turmoil, mistook Xingyun for my daughter and took her in."
Governor Jia laughed and said, "There's only one thing: I took in Feiyun's daughter, which is somewhat unfair to your daughter; and you, brother, took in Xingyun as
your daughter, which is a little difficult for you." Everyone laughed for a while.
Huo Sheng said to Fei Yun, "My lady, our vows are old and our marriage is new, I treat you both the same. Besides, you two are of the same ilk, how could I
show favoritism!" Fei Yun pulled Huo Sheng away, saying, "Huo Lang, you are so heartless! You abandoned me and
forced Miss Li to marry into your family." Huo Sheng said with tears in his eyes, "Yun Niang, don't you remember when we burned incense and made our vows, we promised that
when we met, our union would be complete. Just now, Master Jia said that my repeated refusals were not empty words! Besides, he promised
Miss Li a future... " "When meeting Yunniang, we treated each other equally, regardless of age," said Minister Li. "Now that we've met, bring them all to
my place. Tomorrow, I'll invite you, my elder brother, to come with my wife to express our gratitude for the great kindness shown in adopting our daughter and choosing her husband."
Just then, the official in charge of the hall said, "Reporting to Your Excellency, the imperial
decree has been issued. This year, both the Enrong Banquet and the Qilin Banquet will be held simultaneously. Please, Your Excellency and the Military Advisor, arrive early tomorrow." Minister Li said, "Understood." He then bid farewell to Lord Jia and
returned to his office with his son-in-law and two daughters.
How the banquet will be arranged, how the reunion will take place, remains to be seen.
Chapter Eighteen: An Imperial Decree Arranges Double Banquets, Both Wives and Children Receive Honors
. Now, who is the current Yellow Gate Official? It is none other than Qin Gong, the Magistrate of Yang County, Ruoshui. He was promoted to this position for his meritorious service in defending the city.
He said, "I am delighted that my student Huo Xiufu recommended him to serve under our fellow townsman, Jia Jiedu, and he changed his name to Bian Wuji . He has already achieved remarkable feats
and later became the top scholar in the imperial examination. Yesterday, I reported this matter to the Emperor, and he granted permission to restore his original name.
Furthermore, because of his outstanding literary and martial achievements, he was granted an imperial honor and a ceremonial banquet, a truly unprecedented and rare honor. I am
also present at the banquet as I am temporarily acting as the Grand Master of Ceremonies. Has the banquet been arranged yet?" The official in charge of the banquet replied, "It has been arranged for some time, but
I am not yet able to determine the order of the guests ." "I understand, please give your instructions, sir."
Qin Huangmen said, "The seating chart has been issued. The first one was the Enrong Banquet, chaired by Lord Li of the Ministry of Rites, who sat facing the main seat,
with the top scholar Huo sitting to the east, and Lord Jia of the Privy Council and I accompanying him; the second one was the Qilin Banquet, chaired by Lord Jia of the Privy Council, who
sat facing the main seat. Again, the top scholar sat to the east, and Lord Li of the Ministry of Rites and I accompanied him." The official on duty asked, "So,
where is Commandant Bian's seat?" Qin Huangmen said, "Don't you know? Commandant Bian is the top scholar Huo who changed his name."
"It's always just one person, I've already explained it clearly." The official on duty said, "This humble official only just realized it."
Suddenly, the steward and the dancers stepped forward and kowtowed. Qin Huangmen asked, "Is the banquet ready?" The steward
replied, "Everything is ready." Qin Huangmen said, "By now, all the officials should have arrived and be serving." Everyone
responded, "Understood."
Just then, Minister Li and Military Governor Jia arrived with Scholar Huo. Qin Huangmen greeted them, and after exchanging greetings, they exchanged
some polite words. Qin Huangmen offered them seats, saying, "Lord Li, please let me serve you some wine." Minister Li said, "Logically,
Brother Jia should drink first at this banquet, and I will accompany him!" Military Governor Jia said, "How dare you! Besides, there is an imperial banquet plan, how dare I
overstep my bounds?" Minister Li said, "That is indeed overstepping my bounds." After pouring wine and taking their seats, they exchanged toasts, and then the musicians came to perform.
The first act was "The Child Worships Guanyin," and the second was the story of "Qingli Reads the Book."
After the actors left the stage, all the officials rose. Minister Li said, "The Imperial Banquet is over. You may set up the Qilin Banquet Table and wait for
me to serve the wine." He then had Governor Jia, the chief of the banquet, serve the wine. They answered each other. The musicians then performed "
The Story of Li Becoming an Immortal" and "The Southern Treasure of Persia." After the actors left the stage, all the officials rose to their seats. Minister Li said, "The public banquet
is over. We may now express our gratitude to the Emperor. Tomorrow morning, we will go to court and personally present our letter of thanks." He said to Huo Sheng, "Scholar Huo, you should
change your robes and scepter and ride through the streets to your private residence. This will ensure that everyone knows that this year's top scholar has been appointed, and there will be no vacancy."
Governor Jia said, "That makes sense." Huo Sheng changed his clothes and paraded through the streets, while the officials returned to their offices. It was truly a scene of splendor: Swallows
from the Jade Pool overlooking the clear stream, and shouts echoing along the roadside carried on the wings of green dragons.
How can I repay this offering of holy wine? The sound of jade pendants echoes back to the Phoenix Pool.
It is said that Meng Po, knowing this day would bring a fierce competition if she were to accept Feng Hao's favor, secretly hung the Guanyin image and the painting of Chunrong high
, and then withdrew herself. Miss Feiyun walked to the courtyard, looked up, and said, "Ah! This is my Guanyin
image from that time, hanging here today. Let me pay my respects." She stood up and admired it closely. Hua Xingyun also
came to the courtyard and said, "So the Guanyin image and the painting of Chunrong are both hanging here. Let me pay my respects to Guanyin first,
then look at the painting of Chunrong." After paying his respects, he stood up, looked at the painting, then at Feiyun, and said, "Indeed, their appearances are identical
."
Just as the two exchanged greetings, Scholar Huo returned from the banquet and entered the courtyard. He also bowed deeply to the Guanyin image and
greeted the two ladies. Then, looking at the painting of Chunrong, he said, "Look, I am alone, while you two and the person in the painting
make three!" He laughed loudly. Xingyun stepped forward and asked, "Sir, how many flower crowns have you prepared?" Scholar Huo
replied, "How many? There's only one." Hua Xingyun said, "The painting shows two people sharing one crown; I wonder if they
can share that crown?" Scholar Huo laughed, "How could they share one? I can't say." Pointing to Feiyun, he said:
"Let Fei wear this," said Xingyun. "What Fei?"
Huo Sheng pointed to Miss Li and said, "Let Miss Feiyun wear it for now." Miss Li said, "Husband, this is proper etiquette
. How can you say it's just a matter of letting her wear it for now?" Xingyun said, "Well, even if it's just a matter of letting her wear it for now, it's not something you can just let
go of." Miss Li said, "How ridiculous! A saddle and a horse are the only proper pair. How can there be such a mess?" Hua Xingyun pointed to the statue and said, "Husband, can you
identify which Bodhisattva this is?" Huo Zhuangyuan said, "It's Guanyin." Hua Xingyun said, "Here we go again! The
incense was burned and the oath was not a lie. Where did this person come from to fight over it?" Huo Zhuangyuan laughed and said, "Both of them have a point.
It's difficult for me to decide." The two stood back to back, angry, and remained silent. Just then, Minister Li and his wife came by, and Huo Zhuangyuan stepped forward
to greet them.
Minister Li, seeing his two daughters standing motionless with their backs to each other, couldn't help but ask in surprise, "Today is a joyous occasion, a day for everyone to celebrate
. Why are you two behaving so strangely? What is the reason?" Feiyun stepped forward and knelt,
saying, "I must inform my parents." Minister Li said, "My daughter, rise." Feiyun said, "I was born into a family and married into the family . My marriage to Huo Lang
was arranged by the military governor. It was not an affair. Today, Hua Xingyun is trying to forcibly take away my title. It's quite ridiculous." Minister Li
said, "Today is a joyous day. Let's be a little more lenient with gossip." Feiyun said, "
Lenient with other matters? How can we be lenient with the imperial favor!" She then grabbed Huo Zhuangyuan and said, "I'll accept your decision." She then
bowed behind Hua Xingyun and said, "I'm willing to give in. I'll take down this Guanyin statue, fast and chant Buddhist scriptures, and become a nun, whether at home or in the
monastic life." She then proceeded to untie the statue.
Startled, Madam Li grabbed him, saying, "My child, why are you so hasty? It's always
better to speak calmly!" Hua Xingyun also knelt down, saying, "Reporting to Father and Mother." Minister Li said, "You rise too." Hua Xingyun said,
"In marriage, there's no distinction between large and small families, only the order of betrothal. Huo Lang and I swore an oath before the Buddha,
vowing to be husband and wife, never to forget each other. Besides, the theft of the scroll's serial number was something I discovered beforehand; I witnessed the top prize fall into
the hands of a villain. Now that he's a husband of honor, how can I not be a wife of honor? Therefore, I inquired about our old vow with Huo Lang, not daring to
offend my sister!" Minister Li said, "That makes sense." Miss Li said, "Father, if he's right,
am I wrong?" Hua Xingyun said, "Does it mean only my sister is right, and Father's words are wrong?" She then pulled Huo
Sheng away, crying. "I am but a wallflower, of inferior appearance; let us not speak of that old vow again." She then bowed behind Miss Li and said, "I am willing
to yield; I too will take the 'Spring Beauty' painting, and wish to live a simple life in an empty room. The young man in the painting, I believe, will not change
his heart; I will keep him company." Just as she was about to unroll the painting, Scholar Huo stopped her, saying, "This one is impatient, that one
is impatient too; how shall we handle this?"
Meng Ma came forward, bowed, and said, "Master, Madam, congratulations!" The Madam said, "Rise. Meng Ma,
you've come at the right time. The two young ladies have exchanged some words regarding the imperial edict; I trouble you to mediate, to persuade them." Meng Ma said:
"I know." Then she said to Xingyun, "Oh dear! What a fine day and time! Why is Zhang Zhi like this? Miss,
it's common for officials to have two or three wives and children." Miss Li said, "Mama, don't you know? What does it matter if there are
two or three wives? Back when I was married into the army, it was Governor Jia who officiated at our marriage, and you were the matchmaker." Mama Meng said,
"Yes, yes!" Miss Li said, "I never intended to have an affair, I'm not a concubine, so why is Hua Xingyun asking for an official title today
?" Mama Meng said, "Miss, as the saying goes, 'If it's good, the elder will become the younger.'" Miss Li said,
"How ignorant! What
do you mean by 'the elder becomes the younger'!" Mama Meng then said to Hua Xingyun, "When Yunniang left home, she wasn't like this, following a top scholar? Master Li, my husband..."
"They treat you like their own daughter, that's enough. Let's make things easier for everyone." Hua Xingyun said, "Mother,
what does it matter if he's a reformed official or not? Huo Lang was studying in my house. When you came to see him that day, you saw how
he was my husband. Later, because of the poem, I suffered a lot. How come he's an official now, but I ca
n't even get a title?" Meng Ma said, "Yunniang, don't blame me for saying this, but he is indeed the elder and you are the younger
. You should give way to him." Xingyun said, "How ridiculous! How ridiculous! What elder? What younger?" and pushed Meng Ma away.
Meng Ma opened her eyes and said, "Good for you! The top scholar should also mediate. Otherwise, those two will just keep nitpicking and being jealous, making
a scene." Huo Sheng said, "This matter is very difficult. Mother, you're confused too, why are you being jealous and nitpicking!"
Meng Ma said, "If it's not jealousy and nitpicking, then what is it?" Huo Zhuangyuan said, "It's because there's only one imperial edict, and they both
want it, hence the difficulty." He pushed Meng Ma away. Meng Ma said, "Fine, fine, I
've suffered so much for you, and it's not enough. Now that you've gotten your reward, you've forgotten everything, kicking me
around like a balloon. Miss, I accompanied you amidst thousands of troops; Yunniang, I wrote poems that went through countless trials and
tribulations."
Then she lay down on the ground, pounding her chest with her hands, and cried incessantly. Scholar Huo said to the two young ladies, "Mama, please get up
." Mama Meng said, "If you don't get up, it means you're getting along well, then I'll get up." The two young ladies said, "We'll do
as Mama says." Mama Meng said, "You can't believe me if I say it; I need you three to bow." Sure enough, the three bowed.
Mama Meng said, "That's not enough; I also need you to smile." Sure enough, the three smiled. The lady said, "Truly
, everything that happened before and after was thanks to you. Mama Meng, don't go back; just stay in my household and I'll take care of you for the rest of your life." Mama Meng got up and
thanked them. Suddenly, they heard that Governor Jia had arrived with an imperial edict, and the whole family ran down to listen to it being read. The imperial edict read:
"I have heard that it is customary for the court to be both learned and martial; it is difficult to excel in both the civil and military affairs of the nation.
Now, I greatly admire Huo Duliang, the Imperial Guard Commandant, for his literary talent and military prowess. I hereby appoint him as a scholar of the Hongwen Academy and concurrently as the military governor of Helong, and grant him the title of Scarlet Fish Gold Bag. As for
the ennoblement and hereditary titles for his parents, wife, and children, whether it be for honoring their literary achievements or recording their military merits, the Ministry of Rites shall consult with the Privy Council to determine the appropriate matters and submit a reply for implementation.
Respectfully yours! Thank you for your grace."
The family bowed in gratitude and exchanged greetings. Minister Li said, "I was just about to invite you over to act as a peacemaker, and
now it just so happens that I have received the imperial decree." Military Governor Jia asked, "What advice do you have?" Minister Li said, "Just now, my two daughters
were arguing about the imperial edict, and I couldn't mediate. Now, the imperial decree bestows favors upon Huo Lang's parents and wife, instructing
my two brothers to discuss the matter. I ask you, elder brother, how should we proceed?" Military Governor Jia said, "Although this is a matter of state, it is also a
family matter for you, elder brother. I will leave it to you to decide how to handle it." Minister Li said, "In my humble opinion, Huo Lang's parents' bestowed
title should be of the first rank; regarding his wife's official title, since he was indeed at Xingyun's house when he became the top scholar, the title of the top scholar's
wife should go to Xingyun; later, when he served under the elder brother, my daughter accompanied him, so the title of the governor's wife should go to Feiyun.
I wonder if this is correct?" Governor Jia said, "The arrangement is very appropriate. Please get dressed quickly and don't make a fuss. Tomorrow, I will
report back to the elder brother."
The two young ladies got dressed and then bowed in thanks. A banquet had already been set up, with cups being exchanged and wine being drunk merrily, a scene of great
joy. As the wine flowed and the guests dispersed, a swallow suddenly appeared, circling and chirping. Meng Ma said, "Look, the swallow has flown back again."
The top scholar Huo bowed to the swallow and said, "Swallow, swallow, thank you for your kindness. Now the poem is securely held, and
you will not be allowed to carry it away again." Feiyun and Xingyun also bowed to each other. Truly, they were a perfect couple, harmonious and loving, as the whole family
went to their posts in the Hexi Corridor. Their glory and fortune were indescribable. Later, each gave birth to two sons, both of whom passed the imperial examinations and received honors and titles
. This shows that marriages in this world are all preordained by fate, beyond human control; the swallow merely acted as a matchmaker.
A poem says:
Even a bird with a forked tail has feelings; a poem carries away three lifetimes
. From now on, I entrust this to the painter: who will allow a predestined marriage to proceed as before ?
