【The Tale of the Heroic Swordsman】

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-24
Chapter One: Zhang Sheren is skilled in both literature and martial arts; Wang Huzi wins again and again
. Wine is a poison that bewitches the heart, lust is an axe that cuts down one's nature. Even the most iron-
willed man can be won over by the love of women. Men of all shapes and sizes, strong men and beautiful women, all win the hearts of men and women with a single sincere heart.
This poem, "West River Moon," speaks only of wine and lust. Even the cleverest, most resilient, and most iron-willed man, if they don't indulge in these
vices, they will be undone; once they do, none can escape being bewitched. Even Chu Chongtong, who killed countless people, couldn't help but sigh "Yu Xi, Yu Xi" after his defeat
. It is clear that even heroes cannot escape the love of women. This is yet another story.
Now, let me tell you about a hero of our dynasty, the best scholar in the land and the greatest warrior in the army, who too was corrupted by wine and lust, becoming
a legendary tale. Truly a wonder to behold for a thousand years, a model for all who cherish love.
It is said that in Tianjin, there lived a young man named Zhang Ji, courtesy name She Si, fourteen years old. He possessed extraordinary strength, able to draw an iron-rimmed
bow and wield a halberd skillfully. He had received instruction in single-whip techniques from a mysterious figure, making him appear and disappear unpredictably. He could
shoot nine arrows in rapid succession, each piercing the wind and hitting the target. Furthermore, he could unleash a hundred arrows at once, each hitting its mark; and thirty fire dragon divine spears, each striking a burning target, would kill instantly. Moreover, he could
snatch the head of a general from within three hundred paces as easily as taking something from a bag. As for riding a fierce horse and wielding a long sword, these were merely secondary pursuits. He was born
with: eyebrows shaped like the character "八" (eight), beautiful as green mountains; eyes like clear autumn waters. His face was like a gentle moon, his spirit like that of a chivalrous hero
. If not for a meeting at the celestial palace of Penglai, he would surely be found in the flower garden of Yaochi.
At that time, during a turbulent period, witnessing the hardships of the times, he harbored a ambition to bring peace to the world. His father, Zhang Hong, courtesy name Zizhong, had once
served as the General of Ningfu, but retired to his home due to his perceived incompatibility with the times. His elder brother, Zhang Quan, had inherited the title of Commander. His mother, Lady Jin, was also safe and well.
One day, Zhang Sheng felt ashamed of even knowing a single character, so he told his father he wished to study. His father was delighted, saying, "Our family
has a long tradition of martial prowess, yet you alone aspire to literary pursuits; this is truly exceptional. Why should I not allow it?"
He chose a teacher and went to study. Zhang Sheng was a devout and studious man, never ashamed to ask questions, treating his teachers with respect and his friends with trust. He was humble
and dignified. Even those who knew he was a military officer could not regard him as arrogant. He was well-versed in the Three Classics and the Five Classics, as well as various literary works, poems , lyrics, and songs. In his spare time, he explored the arts of music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. With his eloquent tongue and discerning mind, he was no less than
the ancient masters Ji Bai and Pan An.
Hu Wenjing, having won three examinations, was thus admitted as a student. Scholars flocked to his door, their robes flowing in droves. The first
gate belonged to a family of three generations of scholars. Suddenly, he was brought to this position; without his previous studies, how could he have achieved such a
rank? Zhang Sheng was unrestrained and carefree, indulging in pleasures without flinching, yet never refusing to dine among the pleasure quarters. He once said, "One can find the
Way in wine, and encounter immortals among flowers. How can one be considered a worthy scholar without these?"
At that time, Governor Guan Tao, a renowned scholar of the time, reported that he was cultivating talent, and Zhang Sheng had ranked first in the quarterly examination. Zhang went to thank the examiner, only to
learn that he was the son of Wu Mouzi. He was astonished and exclaimed, "Your writings are elegant and your character heroic and magnanimous, encompassing all
. You are destined to be a prime minister, yet you come from a military family, and your loyalty and peaceful spirit overflow from your pen. In the future, when you rise to high office and enjoy the honors of a minister,
who else but you can preserve your good name?" Zhang Sheng repeatedly declined the offer.
Although Yan Hui was virtuous in ancient times, his fame only became known after receiving instruction from Confucius. Zhang Sheng, though a man of both literary and military talent, merely followed the path of his fellow students and never
achieved widespread renown. However, after receiving praise from Governor He, everyone in Tianjin knew of Zhang Sheng. Furthermore, Governor He sent messengers daily to inquire about his whereabouts
and granted him an audience every two or three days, showing him great favor. His father and brother also gained considerable prestige.
One day, the governor discussed the current situation at the border. Zhang Sheng said, "The border general will undoubtedly be defeated if he makes peace." Shortly after, a report came that the border situation
was becoming increasingly urgent. Governor He was at a loss and asked Zhang Sheng, "With such a vast country, such a large population, and such strict governance,
why can't we control a mere clown? Is it because our troops are weak and our generals are not brave?"
Zhang Sheng said, "No, it's not that the army is weak, nor that the generals are not brave; what we lack are strategists. It's like a dog hunting a beast,
but the one who sets it free is the hunter. Without the right person, how can the dog do anything? Today's strategists are all well-versed in writing
, but they are merely good at words. It's not that they don't seek out one or two mentors, but they are all just people who pick and choose phrases, spouting off and playing with words. They are only good for keeping company, drinking and eating
meat, writing empty words; how can they possibly discuss matters of state? Occasionally, one or two officials try to correct this problem, but they are merely recruiting
the bravest "He appointed him to the position of a bodyguard, a mere servant. Yet not a single humble scholar was recruited to join his cause.
A man of wisdom and strategy, for whom salary and position are neither desired nor sought, possesses great ambition and brilliant strategies. He is certain of victory in battle and
the ability to seize power in any change. He can quell great chaos, save the river, and uphold high principles, seeking neither fame nor recognition. When he encounters a worthy confidant, he will dedicate himself wholeheartedly, vowing to fight to the death. If
such a man were found, even the common people could be driven to annihilation, and the generals could be drawn into rebellion. All the troops would surely benefit; how could a mere clown be so difficult to subdue?"
Governor He praised him highly, saying, "These words are profoundly insightful about the current problems. I beg Your Majesty to invite you to join us." He
then asked, "You are from a military family. Now that the enemy is rampant, you must have strategies for attack and defense to teach me."
Zhang Sheng replied, "Although the bandits are strong, they fear being attacked from the rear and dare not penetrate too deeply. However, I fear that local bandits and
unruly people may seize the opportunity to launch an attack. We must be vigilant. I have four strategies for attack and defense by land and water, which can ensure the safety of this place." He then took out a map from his sleeve and
presented it to him.
Governor He examined it for a long time and sighed, "At this critical time, with such a son, the nation has truly found a worthy successor." Zhang Sheng declined the offer.
He then took his leave of Governor He to study and prepare for the autumn examinations. Governor He could not keep him and instead sent someone to prepare defensive measures based on Zhang's map
.
Now, about two hundred li away from Tianjin, there is a Phoenix Mountain. Connecting with the Erqi Mountains, its head is in the northeast and its tail
connects to Shaanxi, stretching for over a thousand li. It is a gathering place for bandits and a haven for outlaws. Within this area is a mountain bandit named Zheng
Xiong, known as the Great King of Chaos, who has ten Northern Brothers, fifty thousand henchmen, and over three thousand other bandits as followers. Knowing
of the turmoil at the border, he plans to raise an army to attack Tianjin, seize the mountains, cross the Yellow River, plunder Huaiyang, cross Zhenjiang, and march straight to Nanjing.
That day, the group gathered to discuss and choose a day to launch an attack. The strategist Lu Yu stepped forward and said, “Brother, please wait a moment . Tianjin is
a vital city between the north and south, controlling the three border regions and connecting thirteen provinces. Governor He is humble and courteous, enjoying great popularity. He has a force of 100,000 and countless generals . If attacked, the surrounding counties will hear the alarm and send reinforcements to Tianjin. We will be caught between two fires, inviting disaster . My plan is for one or two of our capable brothers to go to Tianjin and surrender. If there is no one to resist, we can advance in close proximity and respond accordingly. We can then lead a light force, traveling by day and night, reaching Tianjin in less than three days. With inside support, we can capture it immediately. This strategy relies on deception, knowing both ourselves and our enemy, and swiftness beyond comprehension. If the enemy has superior manpower, we should rest and recuperate, stockpile provisions, buy horses and recruit soldiers, and wait for the opportune moment. Forcing an attack might not be a foolproof plan .” Zheng Xiong asked, "What do you all think of the strategist's words?"

The crowd said, "The strategist's idea is truly perfect; we humbly beg you, brother, to accept it."
Zheng Xiong said, "In that case, which brother dares to go to Tianjin?"
A man immediately stepped forward in response. Everyone looked at him; he was eight feet tall, about forty years old, wearing a white and purple turban, a silver headband, a white python robe,
silver-leaf armor, a five-pronged beard, and a purple-brown face. His surname was Wang, his given name was Feibao, and his courtesy name was Huzi. He stepped forward and bowed, saying, "I am
but a humble man, but I wish to go to Tianjin. "
Zheng Xiong said, "If you, my worthy brother, could accompany me, I would surely win over all the civil and military officials of Tianjin. Do you wish to travel alone or have someone accompany you?
"
Fei Bao replied, "Just my daughter will suffice."
It turned out that this Wang Fei Bao was from Taiyuan. His wife, Yao, was very beautiful. A powerful official, wanting to rape his wife, imprisoned Fei Bao
, who then hanged herself. The county magistrate, realizing the injustice, released him. Fei Bao was filled with resentment and, under cover of night, set fire to the official's house,
slaughtering his entire family. He then took his two daughters and attempted to flee to the capital to petition for justice. Passing through a mountain stronghold, he was stopped by bandits and killed dozens
. Even the other leaders could not defeat him. Lu Yu persuaded Zheng Xiong to invite him to the mountain, where he took the third seat. Moved by his wife's loyalty in death
, he never married again.
The two daughters, the elder named Nüying and the younger Nüjie, were both well-read, courteous, and exceptionally brave in the army. Feibao often said to them, "I was originally
a good citizen; how could I become a thief? At that time, I had no home anywhere, and you sisters had no one to rely on, so we eked out a living by this means. You
must study diligently in both literature and martial arts. Once you reform, you should dedicate yourselves to serving your country, atone for your sins, and become good citizens again. This is my wish."
When suitors from the same village came to propose marriage, they replied, "My daughter has vowed to be as skilled in both literature and martial arts as he is; then we shall be married." Several men who fought him
were either beaten or captured alive, and after that, no one proposed marriage to them again. Zheng Xiong, knowing the father and son's exceptional martial arts skills, was overjoyed.
He ordered a farewell feast to be prepared.
That day, Fei Bao returned to his room and said to the two women, "Tomorrow, you sisters will go to Tianjin to surrender. If Heaven takes pity on us and finds a way for us
to return to the right path, then our days on the mountain will be over."
The next day, Wang Fei Bao disguised himself as a soldier, carrying a long spear, the two women in blue cotton-padded jackets and soft boots, a large sword, and three sets of
armor packed in a bundle. He rode off on horseback, and his brothers saw him off at the border.
It was said: Phoenix Mountain lost three tigers, Tianjin gained four heroes. They traveled day and night, eating and drinking as they went, and after three or
four days, they arrived in Tianjin. They saw flags waving on the city walls, spears and swords densely packed, a drawbridge high, and notices posted everywhere. The guards at the gates were like
wolves and tigers, with large signs demanding the arrest of spies.
Fei Bao wanted to see the notice, but his two daughters said, "In times of war, this might arouse suspicion. It would be better to go and surrender."
Fei Bao agreed and went to the city gate, calling out loudly, "My father and I, along with my two sons, have come to surrender
. Please inform them, sir."
The guard replied, "Those surrendering should enter through the south gate. We only handle visitors here. There's a recruitment flag on the south gate.
Go there."
The three of them went to the south gate and indeed saw the recruitment flag fluttering on the city wall. They explained their purpose to the guard. After the guard reported
, a blue-flag bearer led them to the guerrilla commander's office. The commander asked their names and origins. They presented their petition, which read: "
Surrenderer Wang Fei Bao, eldest daughter Nüying, second daughter Nüjie, from Taiyuan, aged forty-two, eldest daughter seventeen
, second daughter sixteen. From a young age, they studied strategy and are skilled in warfare." He was proficient in all eighteen martial arts, and
well-versed in the strategies of the Six Secret Teachings and the Three Strategies. The Emperor, showing his favor, issued an edict recruiting soldiers for the frontier. A man from a thousand miles away offered himself, willing to serve in the vanguard.
The guerrilla commander, upon reading the petition, was startled, thinking, "I thought he was just seeking to join the army, but it turns out he's here for a recommendation." He called
for him to rise, saying, "If you wish to serve, you must be tested in martial arts."
Wang Feibao said, "Bring forth the strongest warriors on foot, horse, and water." The guerrilla commander
ordered five battalions of instructors to spar with him. The contests ranged from one to three rounds, with each person either wounded by spears or beaten. In half a day,
twelve men were injured.
Wang Feibao laughed, "What else? Bring it on quickly!" No one dared to answer. Wang Feibao shouted, "You
swindlers who cheated out of grain contracts, you've wasted countless military funds during peacetime! You dare not face Wang Feibao today
? What if your army besieges the city?"
The guerrilla, pale with fright, mustered his strength and said, "You and your son should return to your lodgings. I will inform the governor and
summon you."
Wang Feibao sheathed his gun and thanked him, then asked the guerrilla for lodging. The guerrilla had no choice but to send someone to take him to an inn and also bring
him some wine.
The next day, the guerrilla informed the governor. The governor said, "Since he has made such boastful claims, he must have ambitions. We shouldn't have so readily sent someone
to compete with him. Now he's looking down on me. If outsiders in Tianjin hear this, they'll say Tianjin has no one to rely on. If there's any military conflict,
we must defeat him."
Then, Hu Dadao, Luo Dusi, and Xiao Tieqiang knelt down and said, "We are honored by Your Excellency's trust and are willing to capture Wang Feibao and
his son to bolster Tianjin's military prestige and demonstrate Your Excellency's virtue in nurturing talent."
Before He Gong could speak, a report came that the General had arrived. The governor ordered the three to retreat and greeted General Xu, explaining the previous events.
The General said, "I've come for the same reason. Although this matter involves only the three of them, it truly concerns Tianjin. My subordinates have experienced
generals like Sha Qi, Zhou Zheng, and Sang Xin to assist Hu, Luo, and Xiao. In an emergency, we can manage. I will personally go and compete to see how it
goes." He ordered all officers, high and low, to be fully armed and ready at the training ground the next day.
The next day, the guerrilla commander sent someone to invite Wang Feibao to the training ground for a duel. Wang Feibao dismissed the messenger and instructed the two women, "
General Xu is a seasoned veteran; his subordinates must be capable. Be cautious." The two women were on high alert.
Upon arriving at the training ground, Wang Feibao paid his respects to General Xu, mounted his horse, and engaged in combat. He wounded Hu Dadao with his spear, injured Commander Luo, and struck Xiao Tieqiang with an arrow
. Within ten rounds, he had defeated three generals. Sha, Zhou, and Sang then joined the fray. The father and sons fought again, but before twenty rounds had passed, the three generals were defeated once more.
General Xu was greatly surprised but could only force a smile and said to Wang Feibao, "Your father and son are truly skilled in martial arts. Please stay for a few
days while I speak with Governor He and submit a memorial requesting you to lead troops to the capital." He sent someone to escort them to their lodgings. The three of them
returned with smiles on their faces.
Meanwhile, General Xu returned to see the governor and recounted the events of the past. The governor was quite displeased. Xu Gongdao said, "Tomorrow, let's go to the Minglun Hall together
and summon the officials of the guard, as well as the local civil and military officials and students. Perhaps we can find someone to persuade him to back down." The next day,
the local officials all came to the Minglun Hall and discussed the matter for a while, but none of them agreed. The governor was anxious when suddenly Zhang Sheng came from outside to see him
. The officials and their friends sat down, and the governor told him about the matter.
Zhang Sheng stepped forward and said, "I am deeply grateful for the kindness of my father and teacher in raising me. Although I am not talented, I am willing to take on three sides alone, capture the Wang
family master alive, and tie him up at the gate. Please do not trouble your father and teacher."
The governor said, "We've known each other for our literary pursuits, but
I never expected you to be so skilled in warfare. This is a blessing for the nation and a great fortune for me." His father, Zhang Hong, shouted, "How many scholars and generals dare to accept this position? What abilities do you possess to dare to take on such a post?" He then
said to the governor, "My son is arrogant and unfit for important tasks."
He Gong said, "You know your son is not as capable as I am. My three strategies for attack and defense all originated from your son, and they were all accurate
. I was preoccupied with military matters and forgot about them for a moment. I hadn't consulted him beforehand. Your son is not one who merely studies without understanding the situation
. You have no worries." He then asked Zhang Sheng if he had any military equipment.
Zhang Sheng said, "I have long been devoted to literary pursuits, but I have not prepared any war equipment, in fact, I have none. Perhaps my father could lend me some, but I have
nowhere to find a warhorse."
Indeed: Where can one find a fine steed? The road is full of mediocre horses;
A fine steed lies in its stall, even the discerning judge laments its fate.
Chapter Two: Handsome Men Fight Like Dragons and Tigers; Difficult Sisters Linger Like Clouds in the Rain
. It is said that Master He asked Zhang Sheng if he had any armor. Zhang Sheng replied that he needed to borrow his father's armor, but alas, he had no warhorse. General Xu said,
"Yesterday I acquired a foreign horse named Mo Qilin. It is eight feet tall and twelve feet long, pure black without any blemishes, its body as red as charcoal
. No one dares to ride it. I wonder if you, my esteemed friend, can ride it. If you can, I will send it to you."
Zhang Sheng asked, "Where is it now?"
General Xu replied, "Only the groom Wan Neng can lead it; no one else dares to approach." He then ordered Wan Neng to lead it to the training ground. Zhang Sheng
leaped onto the horse. This horse had never been ridden before and ran wildly. Zhang Sheng was strong and brave, and he
rode it fiercely. After about half a day, he had mastered it and found it to be a fine steed. General Xu praised his ability highly and added, "The former chieftain of Xichuan sent me
a set of chainmail black silver tiger armor, a black silver dragon-headband, and a Shu brocade robe with floral patterns. I have battle gear but have not
worn it yet, so I also send it to you, my esteemed friend, young and strong." He quickly sent someone to fetch it.
Zhang Sheng, fully armored, looked as if tailor-made. The governor, seeing this, said to Xu Gong, "Everything has its owner,
and nothing is accidental. This one coincidence alone ensures his victory over Wang Feibao."
Xu Gong replied, "Indeed, he seems like a match made in heaven." That night, he invited Zhang Sheng to the back hall for drinks.
Zhang Sheng said, "This man has come from afar; his abilities must extend beyond martial arts. Tomorrow, we can send a thousand men to him, firstly to bolster our army's
morale, and secondly to learn about his skills." Xu and He Gong praised this highly.
After the drinks, Zhang Sheng went home.
The next day, Zhang Sheng, fully armored, rode the Black Kirin to the training ground. His father, worried, also went. The governor had already
informed Wang Feibao, who, with his two daughters, had arrived at the training ground. Both sides paid their respects to the governor, who bestowed three cups of wine upon each and
ordered them to each send a thousand soldiers, at their command.
Governor He, General Xu, and Zhang Sheng's father sat in the drill hall observing the troops. They saw: banners shimmering in the bright sun, a murderous aura swirling
like clouds. Swords and spears gleamed coldly, halberds gleamed menacingly. Bows curved like the autumn moon, arrows pierced like stars. Golden armor gleamed like yellow oranges, silver helmets like
jade bells. The gongs roared, shaking heaven and earth, the drums thundered like lightning.
Men were fierce, horses were mighty dragons. After three drumbeats, heroes emerged, slaying generals and seizing flags in half a day.
After three drumbeats, Wang Feibao deployed his thousand troops, forming a gate-and-base formation. Zhang Sheng set up an eight-gate golden
lock formation.
From where the flags of both formations stood, Wang Feibao appeared, dressed as a white horse galloping like snow, his spear gleaming like frost. Banners fluttered
, and a demon appeared amidst the azure sky.
To his left was a female hero, to his right a female warrior, both imposing and exuding murderous intent.
The drums and horns sounded from the east, and Zhang Sheng appeared, dressed in black armor made of silver, a black robe of Shu brocade, with arrows
and spears concealed. He also wielded a painted halberd and a bronze whip, his movements unpredictable. His attacks were swift and deadly. Like a black unicorn, he could take a man's soul
; this handsome young man was ruthless.
To his left stood his retainer Zhang Zhong, and to his right, Zhang Yi.
Wang Feibao stared intently and saw a handsome young general emerge from the eastern ranks
. He appeared to be only sixteen or seventeen, with an elegant and composed demeanor, showing no signs of recklessness. Feibao was overjoyed, thinking to himself: "Having such a son-in-law is enough. Regardless of his martial
arts, his peaceful demeanor alone has tempered many of my carelessness and frivolity." Then, he calmly said, "General of the Eastern Campaign, would like to ask your
name."
Zhang Sheng bowed and said, "General Wang, I am Zhang Ji, the second son of Zhang Hong, the General of Taiyuan. Because of your repeated
defeats of other generals, I have come to learn from you."
Wang Feibao said, "So you are a relative of Zhang Zizhong's parents. The Zhang family's reputation is
renowned throughout the world; I, a humble man, have long admired your name. Today, I have been caught in the chaos, and I have no face to face the spears and swords. If I were to make a mistake, it would be disrespectful
to your father. Perhaps it would be better to have another general test his skills against me." Wang Feibao was truly impressed by Zhang Sheng's words.
Zhang Sheng's words, though initially dismissive, inflamed Wang Feibao's bloodlust. Wang Feibao
, brimming with heroic spirit, roared, "You scoundrel! How dare you underestimate me! I swear I will not rest until I capture you!" He spurred his horse, brandishing his halberd, and thrust it at Wang Feibao's
chest. Wang Feibao quickly parried with
his spear. A fierce battle ensued: Banners fluttered wildly, drums thundered. A mournful wind rose, sweat poured, and the clouds hung low.
Blood stained the halberds, dust billowed, blurring the horses' heads. After the battle, who would prevail?
Broken halberds littered the sandy banks. The two fought for over thirty rounds, neither gaining the upper hand. Wang Feibao thought to himself, "What a fine general! I have never
met a worthy opponent in my life. I never expected to encounter such a formidable foe." He secretly marveled.
Zhang Sheng, a young and inexperienced man, eager to show off his heroism, thrust his halberd relentlessly, leaving Wang Feibao no opening. Zhang
Sheng thought, "I can't defeat him with a halberd, but I'll defeat him with a whip." He drew his bronze whip, used the halberd to force aside Wang Feibao's
spear, and lashed out with the whip at the top of his head, shouting, "Take this!"
Feibao cried out in alarm, dodging the blow, but was struck squarely in the heart, scattering his protective shield like stars in the sky, spitting blood, and
fleeing on horseback. Zhang Sheng shouted, "Where do you think you're going? I'm coming!" He spurred his black unicorn and chased after him.
Just then, from the sound of bells on the western front, a general appeared, shouting, "General Zhang, stop your reckless pursuit of my father!
I'm here!"
Seeing someone engage in battle, Zhang Sheng stopped his horse, looked closely, and exclaimed in surprise, "Zhang Sheng, it's as if Guanyin Bodhisattva has descended
!"
He saw: a forehead scarf ablaze with flames, a crimson robe soaked in blood. Golden armor gleamed crimson, her battle robe a long,
crimson cloud. Her sword sparkled like stars, her horse like a crimson-clawed dragon. Her flowing robes dripped with crimson, her bronze hammer shimmered with purple light. She seemed like a fiery dragon goddess descended to earth, her entire body
enveloped in crimson smoke.
Zhang Sheng asked, "Who goes there?"
The female general said, "I am Wang Nüying. You injured my father, and I have come to avenge the whipping." With that, she swung her hammer.
Zhang Sheng, unperturbed, put down his halberd and raised his whip to meet her. This time, the fight was different: one was seeking
revenge for her father's death, the other displaying her extraordinary skills. One's double hammers flashed like lightning, the other's single whip moved like a dragon's belt.
One's red smoke seemed to startle ghosts and gods, the other's black unicorn seemed to darken the heavens and earth. The two generals, male and female, were like gods, their battle a fierce and unpredictable affair
.
After more than ten rounds of fighting, Wang Nüying thought, "She is indeed a formidable opponent. I cannot defeat her. I will feign defeat and capture her with a hidden weapon
." She made a feint and turned her horse to flee. Zhang Sheng, knowing it was a trick, spurred his horse to pursue.
As Nüying anticipated his approach, she released her red cotton lasso, which Zhang Sheng dodged. Nüying then fired a meteor fork, which Zhang Sheng again evaded
. Taking advantage of the situation, she feigned defeat and fled. Nüying, thinking Zhang Sheng had been hit by a dart, spurred her horse into a fierce pursuit. Zhang Sheng drew his bow and arrow, intending to
shoot, but thought, "Such a beauty, it would be a pity to kill her with a single arrow. I will use a series of arrows to hit her in the head, so she will be grateful for my mercy." He shouted ,
"Lady, watch me shoot your head!"
Nüying was startled; the arrow was already upon her. She caught it with her hand, shouting, "Caught it!" Before she finished speaking
, the next arrow had already struck the phoenix's head. Only then did she realize that Zhang Sheng possessed the divine skill of a series of arrows, hitting the target every time, and had shown mercy, unwilling to harm her
. Just as she was about to rein in her horse and return to her formation, Zhang Sheng's horse had already reached her
. She had no choice but to regroup and fight again. Another twenty rounds ensued, until Nü Ying was able to parry but not retaliate, her body drenched in sweat.
Knowing she was exhausted, Zhang Sheng threw away his whip, luring her in. Nü Ying, weary from Zhang Sheng's attack, saw him open and, without
discerning his intentions, seized the opportunity, attacking with both hammers with all her might. Zhang Sheng forced her with his whip, causing her to miss and fall into his arms
. Zhang Sheng easily reached out and grabbed her by the lion-headed belt, lifting her over the saddle.
He reined in his horse and headed back to his own formation, when he heard a shout from the western ranks: "Leave my sister behind!" Zhang Sheng turned his horse to look at the female general,
who held twin swords, rode a yellow-marked horse, and was dressed entirely in yellow. He saw:
A golden crown with phoenix wings on her head, and golden armor adorned with dragon scales.
A pale yellow robe embroidered with floral patterns, a silk belt adorned with exotic ornaments.
A three-foot-long sword always hung at her waist, a golden
hammer she wielded like a fierce hawk. She leaped over mountains and streams like a lion, wielding twin blades to slay generals and banners.
Her heart was set on avenging her father and sister, her face burning with murderous intent.
Seeing her fierce approach, Zhang Sheng thought, "To fight her, I must drop what I've captured. I should use my divine claw to subdue
her, capture her, and achieve two goals with one move, showcasing my unparalleled heroism." He then took out a flying claw from his leopard-skin pouch
, unleashed it into the air, and shouted, "Wait, female general! Watch me snatch your head!"
The heroine, rushing to rescue her sister, heard this and looked up. How formidable!
A red tassel reflected the sun amidst the mist, a resounding boom echoed in the air like spring thunder.
Five claws extend and retract like dragons in play, one unattached like a bird in flight.
It won't leave until its head is taken, it won't return until its heart is seen.
In the past, Ma Yuan captured Wu Bo; today, Zhang Sheng subdues Li Ji.
The heroine, seeing the flying claws slamming down on her head, panicked and cried out, "General Zhang, spare my life!" Zhang
Sheng said, "Discard your twin swords and I'll spare you."
The heroine had no choice but to drop her twin swords and plead with her against the saddle.
Zhang Sheng said, "It's alright. I'll save you." He turned his horse and rode to the heroine's side, shook his leopard-saddlebag, retracted the divine claws
, and then, taking advantage of the momentum, lifted the heroine onto his horse. Without returning to the ranks, he rode into the military hall, where the three armies cheered and the flag bearers and drummers welcomed him.
It turns out that this claw, if struck head-on, would kill. The act of covering her head with his sword was meant to frighten her. The heroine, unaware of the reason,
was startled and dropped her twin swords. Taking advantage of her panic, Zhang Sheng fought valiantly, captured her horse, and settled the case. This demonstrated his
great wisdom and compassion.
Lords He and Xu, along with their father, witnessed Zhang Sheng whipping Wang Feibao, capturing Wang Nüying, and subduing Wang Nüjie—truly
a hero who could single-handedly hold off three enemies. They came to greet him and saw Zhang Sheng carrying one of them in each hand. Lord He said, "My worthy friend
, don't let them go! I toast to your skill in capturing kings." He poured a large cup and had the gatekeeper serve it to Zhang Sheng.
Lord Xu said, "Autumn is near; I toast to your skill in plucking laurels." Zhang Sheng also drank.
Governor He said, "Since you've already said 'winning the laurel wreath,'
you can also speak of 'third place.'" Turning to Zhang's father, he said, "Such a son deserves a toast from his father. We've already discussed 'winning the laurel wreath,' now you can speak of 'third place.'" Zhang Xian also had someone bring a
cup of wine to Zhang Sheng, but remained silent.
Governor He said, "Your son is a hero, renowned by all, why hesitate to speak of 'third place'?" The three laughed heartily.
Zhang Sheng, feeling embarrassed, leaped off his horse with the two women in tow. Gently setting them down, he whispered, "I was reckless on the battlefield, I
apologize for my rudeness." The two women blushed and remained silent.
Zhang Sheng thanked Governor He's father for his generosity, and they all exchanged pleasantries. The governor instructed the two women to return to their lodgings with Fei Bao,
saying there would be other matters to discuss the next day. He also sent some wine and food to the Wang family father and son. Meanwhile, he ordered a banquet to be prepared to celebrate Zhang Sheng's victory.
Zhang Sheng secretly instructed Zhang Zhong and Zhang Yi to send two tables of wine to Wang Feibao's residence, saying, "My husband offended someone on the battlefield and wished to apologize
, but the governor is drinking and cannot leave. I have prepared a simple meal and wine, which I have sent by your servants. I hope Your Highness will accept it
." Wang thanked the messengers and accepted the wine.
That night, he said to the two women, "He is a truly kind and benevolent hero. My defeat is understandable, but you two, one with a string of arrows
, managed to stop the enemy from taking the head, and the other with a flying claw, managed to snatch it. If you had used all your strength, not only my father and I, but three more would have perished. Yet he remains
so humble and courteous; truly one in a million."
The two women exclaimed in unison, "He is indeed a hero, skilled in both literature and martial arts, and possessing both courage and compassion."
Wang Feibao wanted to marry his daughter to Zhang Sheng, but he did not know his daughter's feelings, nor whether Zhang Sheng was already engaged, nor
who would be willing to marry him. The two sisters shared this sentiment, but neither dared to speak
of it. They nodded in understanding but remained silent.
However, unaware that the two gentlemen already harbored this intention, they asked Zhang Sheng if he was engaged. Zhang Sheng replied, "Only those with both literary and martial talents,
like myself, are suitable for marriage." He Xu immediately understood.
The next day, Wang Feibao personally knocked on the gate. The gatekeeper announced his arrival, and Governor He entered. Wang Feibao knelt and reported, " I
, Wang Feibao, having underestimated my abilities, came to offer myself. Now I know my talents are meager and unfit for great service, so I have come to take my leave and return home. I dare not
act rashly; please allow me to leave."
Governor He said, "You have come a thousand miles to offer yourself; how can you return empty-handed? Yesterday's battle was merely to assess your abilities
and determine your rank; I had no other intention. I will soon send troops to aid Liaodong, and I intend to rely on you as my vanguard. When you achieve merit, I will inscribe..."
"I have already asked, and I will certainly give you an important position. I will not let your visit go unrewarded."
Wang Feibao said, "Sir, with a man like Zhang Sheren here, what attack can you not conquer, what battle can you not win? My father
and I are defeated generals, how can we reuse us? We only ask that you grant us permission to return home, for which we would be deeply grateful."
Governor He said, "Zhang Sheren is one of my most outstanding students, skilled in both literature and martial arts, and possessing both kindness and courage. Although he defeated you and your father
, he truly praised your talents to me and the Grand Master, saying that we cannot afford to lose such a capable general. You need not refuse
. Going to aid Liaodong, repelling the captives, and restoring Liaodong will surely bring you a title of nobility in no time. This is the perfect opportunity to establish your merits and achievements; you cannot
miss this chance." Seeing the sincerity in Governor He's words, Wang Feibao had no choice but to agree.
Governor He then asked, "Are your two daughters betrothed?"
Wang Feibao replied, "My daughters have a prior wish: they must be of equal talent and ability before marriage. They are currently unmarried."
Governor He asked, "What about Zhang Sheren yesterday?"
Wang Feibao replied, "He is a noble young man, skilled in both literature and martial arts. How could my daughters presume to marry him?"
Governor He said, "Zhang Sheren also has a wish: he must be of equal talent and ability before marriage. After yesterday's battle, he greatly praised your daughter's exceptional qualities and expressed considerable
admiration. I have discussed this with Master Xu, and after consulting with you, we can finalize this marriage."
Wang Feibao thanked Governor He and returned to his residence, telling his two daughters what had happened. The two daughters lowered their heads and remained silent. Meanwhile
, Governor He sent someone to meet General Xu, who arrived at the Zhang family residence in a sedan chair. Zhang Sheng and his son hurriedly donned their official robes to greet them. After tea
, He Gong brought up the matter of matchmaking. Zhang's father asked whose daughters they were, and He and Xu Gong replied in unison, "They are the two
girls who competed yesterday. I think they are both talented and beautiful, worthy of being a match for your son."
Zhang Gong said, "That won't do. They are daughters of commoners from afar, while I am from a distinguished family
. The distinction between good and bad is clear, and the difference between high and low is significant. How can we discuss marriage?"
Xu Gong laughed loudly, “Old sir, you are mistaken. Your son has a wish: he will not marry anyone who is not of equal talent and ability. Besides these two women,
where else can you find such a match? Moreover, Wang Feibao said that his daughter has also sworn not to marry Kangfu. In this light, is this not a
match made in heaven? Furthermore, your son is exceptionally talented in both literature and martial arts, and will surely be of great use in the world. To have such a supportive wife is truly a blessing for the family and
a sign of prosperity for the nation. You are a remarkable man of this world; why must you follow the rigid doctrines of common scholars? Throughout history, many heroes have risen from humble beginnings. As for the prince
leading troops to aid Liaodong, bestowing titles and honors is only a matter of course. Besides, the Wang family of Taiyuan is an old and distinguished family. The two women are also of exceptional appearance.
Such a good match is hard to come by; how can you
let this opportunity slip by?” Governor He said, “That is absolutely right.
Zhang Gong, do not be so stubborn.” Upon hearing this, Zhang Gong agreed, saying, “Since I have received your instructions, I will obey.”

Lu Xun, in criticizing the novels of talented scholars and beautiful women, once said that the authors' original intention was merely to publish a few lewd poems. In
classical erotic novels, lewd poems are practically useless, so this situation is inevitable. The poems in the novels of talented scholars and beautiful women
are far more obscene than those in erotic novels. This is just my humble opinion; if you don't believe me, you can verify it yourself
. In the following chapter, the author proudly presents six poems, which is a real pain for me as the typist
. My hands are tired, and I have to endure the awkward sentences. If I were to use a word like "abbreviated," the article would inevitably lose its original form, and I would have to add a supplement later
. Therefore, I'll spend more time typing it out.
rant over, please stop reading.

Chapter Three: Zhong Zizhi Unravels the Bewildering Scheme; Zhang Sheng Mistakenly Enters A Dou City
. That day, Zhang's father agreed to the arrangement. He then asked, "He has two daughters, and I only have one son. Should I marry the elder and the younger?"
Governor He replied, "Yesterday your son captured two horses; you should marry both."
Xu Gong said, "What you say is absolutely right, sir."
Zhang Hong asked, "How should we go and tell them?"
Governor He said, "No problem, I have my own plan."
After bidding farewell to Zhang Hong, he went to the mansion and instructed the patrol officer to summon a matchmaker. A short while later, the matchmaker arrived, kowtowed
, and Governor He gave her some instructions. The official matchmaker arrived at Wang Feibao's residence to inquire about his purpose.
Wang Feibao asked, "Are you referring to my eldest daughter or my second daughter?"
The matchmaker replied, "Why did you send me to the residence, sir? Both young ladies were asked to marry by Master Zhang yesterday. Marrying
the eldest would be difficult for the second, and marrying the second would be disrespectful to the eldest. Since they are of similar birth, we should marry both of them
to ensure their happiness in marriage. We hope Your Highness will grant us this favor, like Yao marrying his two daughters to Shun."
Wang Feibao said, "Your instructions are very reasonable, but marriage is a lifelong matter. I wonder
what the sisters think. Please ask them for my opinion so we can discuss it."
The matchmaker went inside to meet the two young ladies and recounted the events. The two girls said, "How can women make
decisions about marriage? We'll leave it all to Father."
The official matchmaker relayed this to Fei Bao, who had no choice but to agree.
The Zhang family chose a day to send the betrothal gifts. Soon after, the dowry was displayed, and the house was filled with congratulatory guests. The two gentlemen, He and Xu, each contributed to the dowry and accompanied Fei Bao
to the wedding. Fei Bao displayed the two hammers and two swords used by the two girls in a row at the front. Zhang Hong and his wife, dressed in official robes, welcomed the brides to the hall, and the two brides
stepped out of their sedan chairs. This was quite different from their appearance on the battlefield. The first girl, Ying, had delicate, arched eyebrows and a fragrant face, like a fairy descended to earth; the second girl, Jie, was exceptionally
beautiful and charming, like a fairy gathering herbs. A poem praised the beauty of the two girls: "
A gentle breeze whispers among the lotus leaves, a bright sun shines as birds sing in harmony;
They are no less beautiful than the two Xiangling girls, a pair of beauties capable of captivating a nation."
Two women flanked Zhang Sheng, who sat in the center. After the formalities were completed, they were led to the bridal chamber. The musicians withdrew, and the three removed their ceremonial robes and sat down.
Zhang Sheng said, "I was reckless on the battlefield and startled my two virtuous wives."
The two women replied, "We have offended your might and are deeply grateful for your mercy. We are
also fortunate to have been spared your service. It is our greatest fortune to be alive."
Zhang Sheng said, "We each had our own wishes in choosing our spouses. Today, we have met, and no one else has chosen us. The time has come. Please, my virtuous wife, ascend the
throne." He rose to remove Yingjie's hair and invited her to the bed.
Yingjie hesitated. Zhang Sheng, overcome with passion, rushed to the bed and immediately began to make love. Yingjie yielded to Jie, and Jie yielded to Yingjie.
Zhang Sheng said, "My two wives are sisters. Let us proceed in turn."
The heroine slept with her head covered by a blanket. Zhang pulled her close, unzipped her pants, and peered inside. Her skin was like solidified cream, her nipples prominent
. A delicate fragrance wafted from her chest and arms. He was captivated, embracing her and kissing her tongue. She lay on her back
, too afraid to move. He quickly parted her legs, and she grabbed his feet. He parted again, and she whispered, "You're terrifying."
He covered her ear and said, "I won't let you suffer." He then parted her legs with his hands. He took a green duster and used it to shovel it, while she used her hands to sprinkle it on her
bud. Concerned she couldn't bear it, he moistened it with saliva.
She was a virgin, untouched by any penetration. Zhang's green duster was of the finest quality, and she couldn't resist the temptation.
He added more saliva, moistening her bud, and then thrust in. She quickly embraced him, her mouth seemingly unable to bear it
. Zhang Xu used his fingers to poke at her orifices, and then moistened her with saliva. Ying endured it by biting her
blanket, but the sharper one took a small amount and applied it to her,
until the bedding was covered in a red stain. Zhang then shook her a little, but her saliva dried up again, and it seemed as if it was about to burst open. He then soaked her stamen with saliva, and the delicate stamen and tender flower
relaxed slightly. Taking advantage of a moment, Zhang made another sharp thrust, but Ying thought it was too violent and cried out. Zhang covered her
mouth, afraid that outsiders would hear. The green stain also retreated to her trousers, and Ying's voice fell silent. The man then added saliva, which floated inside and out, and moved slowly and gently
. He brought a little closer, mostly wetting her head, and then rubbing her head. Ying felt a little relieved at this time, and pretended to open her eyes to look carefully. As he moved away
, he suddenly brought a little more in.
Ying, looking extremely haggard, whispered, "Please do it tomorrow."
Sheng replied, "Even if I cannot cross the river by boat now, I wish to cross the pass in armor. Will you endure this further?" Ying gritted her teeth
and endured.
Halfway through, Ying said, "Don't move." Sheng continued thrusting, Ying's mouth throbbing with pain. After a long period of thrusting, her
inner flesh became slightly moist, and she became aroused, wanting to ejaculate, but he forced halfway, unable to penetrate, and the thrusting intensified. Ying saw Sheng rushing about frantically, not
knowing what to do, yet her body was completely inside her, she was extremely frightened and distressed, suffering endlessly, occasionally crying out, but then she persevered.
Sheng's thrusting had been going on for a long time, and he felt the green dust growing larger, stretching for half an acre, his neck unable to bear the pain of pushing against the walls and seizing the stronghold. Suddenly, sweet dew
descended, and nectar rose, the raging flames of the fire wheel instantly vanished.
Ying said, "Why should I send my sister away?"
Zhang replied, "I can hold off three sides alone; how can I let her be lonely?" He then went to attack Jie. Jie saw Zhang Sheng, who was as enthusiastic as a soldier,
gentle and kind, and his feelings were also stirred. However, he was ultimately tempted, and in a sudden moment, he was both attracted and afraid
. He could hardly move, so he could only grit his teeth and pretend to be asleep.
Sheng pulled back the covers and refused him with both hands. Sheng said, "I have traveled directly from Ziwu Valley to Chang'an and witnessed the majesty of Han officials. Why
do you refuse to let me in?" He pulled back the covers and entered, riding his horse straight through Hongmen.
Jie, flustered and at a loss, said to Sheng, "My lord, if you send out your elite troops to attack, I will burn the boats and cross the river."
Sheng said, "How about a sand-filled, back-to-the-water formation?"
Jie said, "The daytime battle is scheduled; now, you can act as a scout and double spy." Half-heartedly agreeing, her heart pounding with anxiety, she went along,
feeling both welcome and reluctance, her soul trembling.
The man, lusting after the woman, almost broke free, while the woman, fearing the man's prowess, begged to rein in her horse. It was truly:
Never before had she understood the Flower Pass, and upon arriving, both night and day were cold.
The heroine only let out a few soft cries, and remained silent until dawn.
The three slept together. The sun had already risen in the east, and the crimson clouds shone through the window.
Needless to say, their marital bliss followed.
Why Wang Feibao was recommended and promoted by the two gentlemen, becoming the military commander of Tianjin based on his martial prowess, is a story for another time. Zheng Xiong, having learned of this,
abandoned his plan to seize Tianjin.
But enough of this digression. Let us now speak of a scholar in Tianjin named Zhong Tunan, courtesy name Liuhe. He was well-versed in Confucianism and Mencius, and skilled in martial arts like Sun Tzu and Wu Qi
. Handsome and refined, he valued integrity, understood the times, and was self-satisfied with his refined taste. He was no different from Song Yu, Sima Xiangru, or Han Yi. Furthermore, he was wealthy and
powerful, spending money like water and having many followers, much like Lord Mengchang. He was extremely fond of the southern winds, and once he had tasted them, he would do everything in his
power to achieve his desires.
Since the day he saw Zhang Sheng win three victories and marry two women, he privately sighed, "Such beauty, such talent, and such strength!
Our region has such a fine specimen; it's truly a rare commodity."
He then devised a plan: "This man is dashing and romantic, but the ravages of time are inevitable. I have a small reputation for literature; I will go to him out of admiration for his talent, and he
will surely succeed in my plan." So he prepared gifts and went to congratulate Zhang Sheng.
Zhang Sheng, knowing he was a renowned scholar, straightened his clothes and went to greet him. Zhong Sheng said, "I have long admired your name; it is like a thunderclap in spring. To be able to meet you today is a
great honor."
Zhang Sheng said, "I am deeply honored by your kindness. I am sorry for not welcoming you properly at your humble abode." After tea, they were served wine, and parted in high spirits.
The next day, Zhang Sheng returned the visit with his servant. Zhong Sheng was overjoyed and said, "Brother Zhang,
your arrival is just in time! Six young ladies came to visit me, and I was just about to send someone to invite them. Your presence has truly captivated me." He then called the ladies to the gathering. Each introduced herself:
Yan Hanxing, Huang Haitang, Tao Youhua, Zuo Xianglan, Jin Jinlian, and Li
Huapeng—all famous courtesans of Tianjin.
Zhang Sheng looked them over closely; each was beautiful and exquisite. Then, delicacies were laid out, and wine was poured in abundance. Zhang Sheng almost
forgot he was in the world. After becoming drunk, the six ladies asked for his opinion. Zhang Sheng, in high spirits, wrote a line of poetry for each of them, presented them with a song
, and inscribed it on a fan. (Omitted)
Presented to Yan Hanxing with Apricot
Blossom: The goddess descended from the Yangtai Terrace in vain, while Erlang Shen's literary works flourished. Their fragrance lingered in the middle of spring, like a rosy cloud. The branches protect
the eye, its vibrant colors naturally beautiful, a sight difficult to capture. The nun doesn't climb the wall, her fair skin shining brightly on the balcony. She climbs upwards, shrouded in dew,
how could she allow the heartless bees and butterflies to be so easily jealous?
A gift of crabapple blossoms
to the yellow crabapple: The oriole flies over the crabapple blossoms, the warbler's spring colors reveal its fragrant beauty. Its skin is delicately rouged. Facing the wind, she tries on her new makeup, the moon
clearly shines on the crabapple blossoms. Cherries, like golden bullets, hang down. Today, in this desolate place, it is not in vain: the envoy from Jinjiang came to seek flowers ,
moved by a kind of lightness. A gift of peach blossoms to the peach: The peach blossoms and the face reflect each other's redness, the golden osmanthus by the river. I only thought Wuling Creek was far away, how could I know it was right before my eyes? Just this one blossom in the gate , all the other flowers are inferior. Why need the ten thousand trees in Wang Cave be fresh? The river wind feels ashamed of its meagerness, how fortunate I am to have been captivated by Liu and Ruan. My heart rejoices at the perfect union, yet the pain of parting is swiftly expressed. Willows sway like gold, I wish to meet again next year, and when we meet again, your beauty will not have faded. [A poem presented to Zuo Xianglan, paired with orchids ] A beauty's countenance is as delicate as a flower, Niannu's delicate womb holds nine tears. Even the most elegant flowers are beautifully arranged, their unique charm is extraordinary. Facing the sun and wind, where they dance, their fragrance lingers, clinging to my clothes. I only wish to join the Ganoderma lucidum, not to hide among the grasses. Few know of this secluded valley, surpassing even Guanyin.

Truly possessing all the splendor. The jade hibiscus, even more so, should know, its fame in the Golden Valley is fitting.
A golden lotus paired with a lotus flower
. Red skirts vie to see the green-clad youth, fragrant willow maidens admire the elegant makeup, urging to taste its wonder. Emerging from the soil, yet untouched by its muddy appearance. The poppy
, adorned with green shade, brings spring in the nine summers, its dance in the gentle breeze carries fragrance for ten miles, a beautiful sister's shy charm. Even if it loses to the sixth prince, Zhu Nu'er,
treading on the waves, endless longing remains. Congratulations to the groom, entrusting the orchid boat, the immortal guest lightly rows the oars, fearing it might easily diminish the red blossoms.
A pear blossom paired with the moon
. A single moon shines through the upright window, locking the cold window in its remoteness. The flowers do not compete in spirit. Behind closed doors, its true flavor shines forth. Casting a pale moon,
a dream of cold, idle clouds, snow diminishes its slenderness, frost loses to the tender leaves, inferior in quality. Fragrance contains jade-like essence, sought between man and moon. The poem of the Yuan dynasty,
mistakenly given to another.
Without hesitation, he wrote the inscription and presented it, drawing admiration from all. Zhong Sheng exclaimed, "A prodigy, surpassing
even the most talented men of the past!" He then raised his cup and drank heartily.
The third watch of the night had passed when Zhang Sheng took his leave. Zhong Zi said, "A talented man and a beautiful woman, perfect company, how can you bear to leave
?" Zhang Sheng gladly accepted and stayed in Zhong Zi's study.
Indeed: wine doesn't intoxicate, people intoxicate themselves; beauty doesn't bewitch,
people bewitch themselves.
Zhong Zi arranged for six concubines to accompany him for the night, then departed. The six concubines took turns flattering him, almost overwhelming Zhang Sheng. Afterwards
, Pear Blossom Moon offered a cup of hot wine to enhance the festivities. Zhang Sheng drank it all in one gulp, then felt dizzy and fell asleep on his pillow. This is
the intoxicating wine that Zhong Sheng created.
When Zhong Sheng arrived, he found Zhang Sheng fast asleep, unresponsive to his calls and unawakened by shaking. He then dismissed the six concubines. He undressed Zhang Sheng and placed him on the bed,
touching him; it was warm and smooth like jade. Reaching his genitals, he found them moist. Zhong Sheng was greatly alarmed, exclaiming, "This thing is meant for this place!" Then he
thought, "That's it! He's been with six concubines; even if it's just semen, he's using this thing as a prelude, not saliva.
" He then probed the opening with his hand, finding it quite interesting. He bent down and entered, his penis slippery and easy to insert, before thrusting in forcefully.
Zhang Sheng stirred in his sleep, and Zhong Sheng quickly stopped, but Zhang Sheng fell asleep again.
Zhong Sheng then added saliva, moistened his genitals with his fingers, and then touched his penis, before thrusting in. With a powerful thrust, he was already
halfway there. Seeing that Zhang Sheng didn't move, Zhong Zi continued, both thrusting deeply and violently, yet Zhang Sheng remained oblivious.
Zhong Zi said, "What's the worst that could happen? Even death would be willing if I could die happy." He then took advantage of the situation and turned Zhang Sheng around.
Zhang Sheng, bewitched by the intoxicating wine, still believed in his dream that a woman was manipulating him, and thus turned around, though he wanted to resist, he
couldn't break free. Zhong Zi, gagged, rushed forward, striking directly at Zhang Sheng's core, wildly and forcefully, thrusting and pulling over a thousand times. It
felt as if something was coming from inside Zhang Sheng's anus; Zhong Zi used all his strength, swiftly and skillfully maneuvering. In his drunken dream, Zhang Sheng's body was beyond
his control. It felt as if insects were burrowing inside his anus, a sensation that was neither external nor internal, a desire he couldn't bear to let go of. He swayed uncontrollably, groaning
, his waist trembling, his buttocks heaving, his hands grasping at something. His bones felt weak, his heart pounding, his spirit terrified. His breath was shallow, his feet relaxed, and he was so exhausted he almost
didn't know if he was male or female.
Zhong Zi, his heart pounding, his spirit trembling, his yang essence overflowing, was about to die of pleasure, but he didn't release his illicit member and clung tightly to Zhong Zi as they slept
. At dawn, the drug's effects subsided slightly, and Zhang Sheng awoke. He realized the one he was embracing didn't seem to be a woman, and that something was blocking his anus.
Knowing he had been tricked, he pushed her away, jumped up, threw on his clothes, and left the bed. His anal fluids were flowing down his legs. Enraged, he shouted
, "What a scoundrel! Daring to challenge me! Do you think my sword is useless?" He drew his sword from the wall, ready to kill
Zhong Zi.
Zhongzi, startled, quickly put on his clothes, got out of bed, and knelt down, pleading, "No need to be angry. I am willing to have my head cut off to vent your hatred and fulfill
my wish."
Seeing that he showed no fear and spoke calmly, Zhang Sheng asked, "What do you mean?"
Zhongzi replied, "I truly admire your talent and beauty, brother. I wished to smell your fragrance, and I would die willingly. Therefore, I visited you, inviting you to accompany me
, all to fulfill this desire. Now that my wish has been fulfilled, please cut off my head to atone for my sins. Let the world and future generations know that I, Zhongzi,
willingly lost my life for love, and that I, Zhang Sheng, was executed for losing my chastity. Without friendship, both of us could be immortalized in the world. I am not unaware of your formidable power, brother
, and that to offend you would mean certain death, but my initial desire had already broken the barrier of life and death, and we hadn't discussed it until today." He offered his neck to die,
showing no fear whatsoever.
Zhang Sheng threw down his sword and sighed, "It was my fault for risking my life to come here and fall into their trap. How can I, a man defiled by a woman, stand
between heaven and earth?" He then wept, tears streaming down his face.
Zhong Zi said, "I made a single mistake, defiling your body. Reflecting calmly, I know I deserve to die. I hope you will not grieve
, brother. I am willing to die to atone for your sins." With that, he picked up his sword and prepared to commit suicide.
Zhang Sheng hurriedly embraced him, saying, "Things have come to this; what good would death do for me? You are but a commoner, and death, though a single word, can be as heavy
as Mount Tai or as light as a feather. You risk your life for a moment of pleasure; why be so disrespectful?"
Zhongzi replied, "No, my brother, you are talented in both literature and martial arts, handsome and dashing. To have met you would be worth nine deaths without regret. Now that our love is
fulfilled, even death would feel like life itself. Why not die?"
Zhang said, "Brother, you are truly a man of feeling. Though I am a man, I would gladly become your concubine."
Zhongzi bowed in gratitude, and Zhang reciprocated. They took each other's hands and slept together, with no trace of suspicion remaining.
Chapter Four: The Two Friends of Qishan Part Ways; A Chance Encounter in the Capital
. The friendship between Zhong and Zhang was firmly established, and the suspicions between them were immediately resolved. Afterwards, whether one came to the other or went to the other, their hearts were as one, unwavering and inseparable.
In the autumn examinations, Zhong and Zhang passed together. Just as they were about to go to the capital for the metropolitan examination, Governor He sent someone to invite them. Zhang hurriedly went to see Governor He.
He Gongdao said, "Your father-
in-law was campaigning in Xiangshan, but he was unfamiliar with the terrain and was led into a dangerous area by the enemy. He has been trapped there for over twenty days. We just received an urgent dispatch from the Ningfu military governor. I wanted to send troops to his rescue, but my generals are not up to the task. I would like to trouble you, sir, to go. Also
, how should this matter be handled?"
Zhang Sheng replied, "Fame and fortune are trivial matters. How can I not rescue my family? Father , please don't worry. I will go home
to bid you farewell, and then my wife and I will lead troops to Ningfu to rescue him." He Gongdao was overjoyed.
Zhang Sheng returned to his parents and told them what had happened. His parents said, "Rescuing troops is like putting out a fire; there is no time to lose. Go quickly and do not delay.
"
The next day, he and his wife went to the training ground, where He Gongdao and Xu Gongdao hosted a farewell banquet for him. Zhang Sheng received the military seal and sword, and ordered his two wives to lead the troops
ahead, waiting ten miles away. Meanwhile, Zhong Zi was making preparations to travel north
with Zhang Zhong when Zhang Zhong suddenly arrived at the mansion, saying, "The Prince is trapped, and it is my duty to rescue him. The military situation is urgent , and we cannot delay any longer. I was unable to attend the farewell banquet at the pavilion with the Second Master, so I cannot say goodbye in person. I urge you, sir, to take care on your journey north." Zhong Zi seemed disappointed, and knowing that the Governor and General were seeing him off, he did not want to intrude on the banquet. He hurriedly ordered his family to prepare a farewell feast twenty li away. After waiting for a long time, suddenly...

Seeing the banners fluttering, a troop of soldiers swarmed in:
A palpable aura of killing intent billowed in the dust, and faint red clouds reflected on the green moss.
Ten miles away, the sound of clashing armor
could be heard, and a mountain of soldiers rose from the earth. Zhong Sheng sent someone to inform them, and Zhang Sheng halted his troops, coming out to greet him, saying, "My father-in-law has been trapped in Xiangshan for nearly a month, and the situation is
dire; I must come to his aid. My brother, if you go north, you will surely be the first in the spring examinations, but I regret that I cannot ride alongside you to enjoy the flowers and ride a thousand miles with you.
"
Zhong Sheng said, "The affairs of the military and the family are beyond your control, brother; I have no reason to worry. But we have only been together a short time, and now we are separated by north and south. Even the most passionate
men would be heartbroken at this point." After the food and drink were laid out, the song "Yangguan" was sung repeatedly, the three armies urging each other on, their hearts filled with bittersweet emotions.
A Seven-Character Quatrain Composed on the Spot to See You Off:
Remembering our past discussions of autumn seascapes, how joyful we were as the winds and clouds swirled.
How many times have I dreamt of you, now that we meet again, our spirits are most aligned.
Under the flowers, we discussed poetry, our spirits soaring;
now, parting brings new sorrow. I know you'll soon be at the border of Lulong, and have conquered Loulan to comfort your distant journey.
Hearing this, tears fall, and I sadly reply with a single line of a five-character
quatrain: With tender feelings, I regret our parting, lingering briefly over the wine.
The banners of our homeland are obscured, while in this foreign land, warhorses roam.
I gaze upon the northern gardens, the smoke rising from the enemy-slaying mountain peaks.
We are separated by a thousand miles, our eyes straining with longing. We are
both saddened, and after much pleading, we reluctantly part. Zhang Sheng's army marched towards Funing in a grand procession,
arriving in half a month. They presented the governor with a notification document. Governor Zou, knowing Zhang Sheng was the newly appointed top scholar, treated him with great respect. A banquet was held in his honor, lasting
until the third watch of the night. The next day at dawn, Governor Zou dispatched 10,000 troops and four generals, all under Zhang Sheng's command.
Three days later, they arrived at Xiangshan. The bandit leader, Hai Chao, knowing reinforcements had arrived, hastily mustered his troops to meet them. Arrows were fired from both sides to halt their advance. Hai
Chao rode out, adorned with a golden crown and pheasant feathers, a red robe and golden armor. To his left was Zhan Caofei, and to his right, a one-eyed dragon. Zhang Sheng stepped forward, flanked by a heroine on his right and
a valiant woman on his left.
He roared, "Ignorant scoundrels! Try to escape this siege! Thank goodness the Buddha saw you; otherwise, I would have slaughtered you without a trace! Trying to mend a leak in the river is too late!"
Hai Chao laughed loudly, "Trapped soldiers are like fish in a rut, and those who come to rescue us are like doves in the rain
. Perfect for a mutual annihilation!" He spurred his horse, brandishing his sword, and charged straight at Zhang Sheng. Zhang Sheng met him with his halberd, ready for battle: "The two generals sit on their saddles, their battle clouds piercing the nine heavens
. They hastily unfurl their halberds and wield their great swords.
One is eager to rescue his father-in-law, the other intends to trap a hero. One's halberd moves like a dragon and phoenix, the other's sword roars like
a tiger and a dragon. Truly, they are like two cunning lions fighting, no less fierce than sharks in a stormy river."
After a thousand-round battle, Zhang Sheng secretly seized the Fire Dragon Spear, and with a shout, struck him squarely in the face. The spear blazed on his head, and he died on the
spot.
Zhang Sheng charged forward to claim his head, but the One-Eyed Dragon galloped forward, shouting, "You killed my commander! I am
your sworn enemy! I will fight you to the death!"
Zhang Sheng brandished his halberd to fight, but Nü Ying spurred her horse and brandished her hammer, shouting, "My lord, stop! Let me capture this thief!"
The two horses clashed, exchanging no words. In ten rounds, Nü Ying struck him with her hammer, splattering his brains, and he died a violent death
. Zhancaofei leaped from his horse, brandishing his axe, and shouted, "Don't go! I've come to avenge my brother, the commander!"
Ying was about to fight again when the heroine rushed forward, saying, "Sister, leave this thief for me to kill. It won't be in vain that I came all this way
."
Ying reined in her horse, and the heroine fought Zhancaofei fiercely, axes and swords clashing, their horses roaring. After twenty rounds of fierce fighting,
the heroine, enraged, feigned a strike, luring Zhancaofei to attack with all her might. She forced back the thief's axe, then struck with both swords, tragically cutting him and his horse into five pieces
. Zhang Sheng mobilized his troops, breaking through the encirclement. Wang Feibao, knowing reinforcements had arrived, led his troops out, and the enemy soldiers scattered and fled. The father-in-law and son-in-law,
father and son, reunited, overwhelmed with mixed emotions of sorrow and joy, and led their troops back to Funing. Governor Zou held a banquet to celebrate their victory and requested imperial decree for punishment. Several months later, they finally
returned to Tianjin. It was too late for the spring examinations.
One day, alone in my study, thinking of Zhongzi, I hastily composed a poem in the style of "
Sheng Chazi": My brother grieves alone this night, even the moon seems weary of the empty bed. Thus, startled by the ghostly dream, it sends forth its pitiful light. My lonely shadow rises and wanders, even the moonlight
is melancholy. Unable to sleep as the moon sets, the rooster's crow enters my bedchamber.
Unable to contain my emotions, I composed another poem of
"Longing": My thoughts drift endlessly, the waters stretch far and the mountains long without end. When will this longing cease, when spring sorrow will cease? Facing spring sorrow, day after day,
I see the departing boat on the spring river. With deep affection, I lean against the empty tower.
I also composed four poems in the seven-character style of "Parting Thoughts and Dreams of Lament" in the style of "Wang Jian Gong":
Parting... Parting...
Heartbroken and speechless, the ghost sobs sadly, long love and short love, woven again and again into the mandarin duck melody. The partridge cries out its grievance in longing.
Tears fall drop by drop, each step a bend; I've heard it said tears are not easily shed, but heroes here should weep blood.
Thoughts,
thoughts unaccustomed, unbearable, like a drunken dream, a mad joy. Gone and returned, suddenly empty, I play the zither again in lament. Despairing, I unfold the scroll, sorrow precedes it;
my heart is broken, I forget to eat, I sleep because of her. From ancient times to the present, all have harbored resentment; the greatest bitterness in life is knowing someone.
Dreams,
dreams and spirits intertwine, emotions linger, half a pillow awaits a cave. Neither going nor coming, who welcomes, who sees off? Even in a half-asleep state, it feels like meeting; how can there be no
haste before departure? Startled by the overflowing waters of the Blue Bridge, then astonished by the raging temple fire. Love is a bird on a branch, indifferent to the departing one's empty song.
Resentment,
resentment is easy to part, hard to see the burning desire. A mortal heart, like a swallow, cries out. Writing in the air, I sigh. I linger before the moon, frequently reluctant to leave in the wind
. Tears have dried, yet sorrow still lingers. I, who once held no sway over you, must sever all ties, but the root of my hatred
cannot withstand the torment. Many poems have been written, too numerous to remember.
Since Zhang Sheng left, Zhongzi has been utterly bored. Therefore, he composed ten poems in private since your departure, to record his longing.
First:
Since you left, not a day has passed without longing. I ask my beloved, does she know this feeling?
Second:
Since you left, I spend my days staring blankly at the sky. I only see geese flying south, but not the great river flowing east.
Third:
Since you left, I neither speak nor laugh. Is it because I fear what others say, but they share my sentiments?
Fourth:
Since you left, I cherish you under the lamp. And there is a beautiful woman, her light shining brightly before me.
Fifth Poem:
Since you left, I regret the broken quilt. Unable to reunite in joy, I shed tears of longing alone.
Sixth
Poem: Since you left, I dare not even ask Heaven of my grievances. Since ancient times, those who are deeply in love are often bound by fate.
Seventh
Poem: Since you left, even in my half-asleep state, it feels like we meet again. Tears remain, but where is he? I can only sigh at my drifting life.
Eighth Poem
Since you left, I am filled with sorrow, wondering where to return. I will ride the wind and transform into a yellow crane, flying straight to the Chu sky.
(Poem 9)
Since you left, I hate the flowing blue river. I can only see you off, my longing for you is endless .
(Poem 10) Since you left, the oranges are broken on Xue Tao's paper. I will not write a marriage register, but only a poem of parting sorrow. (Poem 11) Since you left, I have written down my infatuation. There is no need to weep for Wei Sheng, for I too am infatuated. (Poem 12) Since you left, I strum my sword and sing a farewell song. One song, two lines of tears, where will I meet Jing Ke? Later, in the capital, I stayed at my lodging, dreaming of weeping with Zhang. Upon waking, I recited a poem on my pillow, "Thinking of My Son," to commemorate the event: My bed is empty, night after night, when will my lonely heart be reunited? Though I am accustomed to sleeping alone, I am suddenly struck by sorrow upon waking. I regret the long separation, and grieve for the long journey. I weep in my dreams, my tears falling like pearls, soaking my pillow a thousand times. The next morning, I rose early and saw half-fallen red petals, gradually turning spring into color. Moved, I composed a poem of longing: Sorrow is speechless, melancholy is speechless, red petals fill the courtyard, spring's affairs are idle. I think of you, but you do not return, blocked by mountains and passes. Gazing at the mountains and passes, I lean on the railing, the fragrant grass withers, tears welling up and wetting my face. The spring examination results are announced, and I am selected as a top scholar. I passed the palace examination in the second class, and was selected as a Hanlin scholar. Just as I was about to return home in glory, a mutiny broke out in Shaanxi, leaving a vacancy. Because of Zhong Ziyi's profound knowledge of military affairs, he was appointed Minister of Military Affairs, and an imperial edict granted him a sword and the authority to act expediently if he had any successful strategies. He was ordered to depart immediately. Zhong Zi said, "My relationship with Zhang Qian is so ill-fated. We met so many times, and now we are separated again. Is it fate or human nature?" The deadline was fast approaching, and he dared not linger. He had no choice but to write a letter and send someone to Tianjin to invite Zhang to Shaanxi for a meeting. Zhong Zi set off alone, vowing to pacify the western frontier. Indeed: With heroic spirit, he marched to the western frontier, his golden seal shining brightly. His strategies, though seemingly simple, were meticulously planned, his plans swift and skillful. Blood flowed like a broken chariot wheel, his body smeared like an axe, leaving the demons swarming. He returned to report his victory at the Qilin Palace, now riding alone, he alone had achieved great merit. Upon arriving in Shaanxi, bandits and thieves scattered at the mere mention of his name. Zhong issued proclamations to reassure the people, executing the ringleaders and pardoning those with minor offenses, providing provisions and punishing the corrupt . The army and the people were at peace. Someone offered a bribe to obtain the position of battalion commander. Zhong Zi said, "A battalion commander is a commander of a thousand men. If his talent and virtue are inadequate, then a thousand men will suffer. Moreover, if you are bribed into the position, you will surely command a thousand troops, which is of great importance to the nation. If you take advantage of this in the army, what kind of person will you think I am ?" He refused the bribe, executed the man, and hung his nameplate at the army gate. Everyone was horrified. In an instant, they began to use public funds to cover their losses, and suddenly , more than a thousand bandits in the surrounding areas became law-abiding citizens. Meanwhile, the official went to Tianjin, issued a document, registered the order, and went to Zhang's residence to see Zhang Sheng. Zhang Sheng opened the door to see him. The letter read: " At the long pavilion, we met again, separated by heaven and earth. Wherever your banners went, you were triumphant. We were friends like family. In this time of turmoil, I was unable to offer my assistance, yet I have worked hard for you. I think about it quietly, how can I express my feelings? I hope your father and mother are well." Traveling north in late winter, the road is frozen , the flowers and buds are all sorrowful, and the changing of the old and new, though the body is far, the heart is near. Reflecting on the past and present, tears stream down my face . I regret not being the first in the spring examination, feeling ashamed to have offended my friends. I was hoping to return with the emperor, to see my old friend and comfort him. But alas, the emperor's affairs are pressing, and I must go to my military duties. I set off alone, vowing to cleanse the evil spirits. Where is Tongguan Pass? The four imperial horses are magnificent, the ancient stars shine in the western prison. My brother plans to establish the Southern Song Dynasty. After our parting, I sent this poem for your perusal, expressing my unwavering loyalty. Zhang Sheng read it and was overjoyed. Just as he was about to go to Shaanxi, his father suddenly fell seriously ill and died after three days. Zhang Sheng was devastated, everything collapsed, and he was revived several times. The official in charge was unaware of the situation and had to take his leave. Zhang Sheng said, "I should have gone to see your father, but I am in mourning and cannot visit him in person. You have troubled yourself with your journey . I will write a letter to your father." The letter reads: " Since we joined hands, half a month has passed, and we have arrived at Xiangshan. Eleven men, large and small, have relieved the siege of my father-in-law and captured its leader. With the assistance of my two wives, the army has been able to fight bravely. I also petitioned Governor Zou of Ningzhou to report the victory. My father-in-law was then promoted to General of Gansu and Putian. After a three-month delay , I finally received news of the expedition and returned home. The spring examination results were not yet available. How can I bear this sorrow? My brother's fortunes are dire. He received news of the victory three months ago. He rose from a commoner to a member of the Hanlin Academy. He was then promoted to Minister of War, granted an imperial sword, and given the authority to act arbitrarily, with the power of life and death. Officials below the second rank no longer need to request permission. This is a rare opportunity, and my brother has encountered it, making him a true friend." The messenger arrived, eager to deliver the letter, but unexpectedly, chaos descended from the heavens, taking my lord away. Wen, now embroidered and dressed in tattered hemp, turned joy into weeping. Such sorrow and joy are truly incomparable. My brother, a regional governor, you are a pillar of the state, upholding the authority of the people, working tirelessly day and night, balancing gentleness and strength, so that you may fulfill the expectations of the emperor and the hopes of the people. Three years later, I, observing the customs of the region, ensured that you never lost anything on the road, never locked your doors at night, and that music and song filled the air, with joyous sounds echoing everywhere. This is the example of Zhongzi's teachings. I pour wine in the west to celebrate our separation. Poems and photographs are attached. I, Zhang Ji, weep bitterly. (Chapter 5: For Friendship, Leading the Army to Defeat the Enemy, Resigning from Office and Returning to the Mountains ) The messenger returned to Tianjin and presented Zhang Sheng's letter. Zhongzi opened the letter, read it, and sighed, "Why are we two so full of devils?" He could only send the messenger to Tianjin to offer condolences. Time flies, and three years have passed in the blink of an eye. Zhang Sheng bid farewell to his mother and wife and went to the capital for the imperial examination. He passed with flying colors and ranked third. The emperor, after reviewing Zhang Sheng's memorials, found in Zhang Sheng's "Memorial on the People's Sentiments" the following: "Silk in February, grain in May, I think of these common people; in the south there is the Winnowing Basket, in the north the Dipper, who is not a child of the people? Their homes and livelihoods are ruined, though they cherish their land, they find no peace; they cry out to heaven and earth, wanting to knock on the gates of heaven but powerless. The wild geese are so diligent, what about the cattle and sheep grazing on the grass? It is fitting to spin silk threads, to steam the resentment in the heavens; why must they repent at the Yellow Emperor's tomb, foreshadowing disaster in the stone eye? In swiftness and danger, in Longxi, Shu, Fujian, and Yue, mulberry and hemp are turned into banners; in haste, they wield weapons, in Ruzhou, Yingzhou, Qizhou, and Huangzhou, calves become swords and spears. The road is difficult, the wind howls and ghosts cry; without a home, the sun rises and birds sing." The emperor, upon hearing this, summoned Zhang Sheng to an audience and asked him about the affairs of the realm. Zhang Sheng spoke eloquently and clearly. When it came to military matters, he laid out his arguments in detail, all based on verifiable examples. When asked about the ills of the nation, they wept bitterly, saying that some problems arose from procrastination, others from appeasement, still others from conformity, and still others from factionalism. The emperor lamented the lateness of their meeting, while the ministers envied their fortunate encounter. Shaanxi was in dire straits, and Zhang Sheng was summoned to discuss the matter, and a memorial was presented to him. Zhang Sheng bowed twice and read it; it was a memorial from Zhong Zi. Inside were impassioned words: "Tian Bide, the magistrate of Tongguan County, is arrogant and ruthless, with a wolfish nature. His greed and cruelty surpass even Shen Buhai and Han Fei; his tyranny is no less than that of Jie and Zhou. Heaven is enraged, and there has been no rain for three years; the common people complain, and frost falls in June. Instead of repenting, he remains unruly and undisciplined. Taxes are urgently demanded, yet good citizens fight amongst themselves; pacification is neglected, yet innocent children wield weapons in their own homes. When the city gates catch fire, the fish in the moat suffer . After breaching Tongguan, he attacked Shaanxi Province. Repeated campaigns failed, and his attempts to appease them only emboldened him. After a half-year siege, he lamented the lack of water and fire supplies; grain..."

"The roads are blocked, and the suffering of hunger and destitution is overwhelming. With empty stomachs and weapons at their sides, the isolated city is on the verge of collapse; even with birds caught and rats hunted, the people cannot get a full meal.
The road to the Three Auxiliary Regions is the true safeguard of the capital; the road connecting the nine provinces is the bulwark of the entire nation. Those who eat vegetarian food deserve execution, and the plight of countless loyal ministers is not
a pity; if the impregnable fortress is breached, how can the Great Wall not be in danger? Hoping for rescue is no different than hoping for rain; relieving the siege is no different than relieving a hanging." Zhang Sheng, after reading this,
knelt and reported, "Shaanxi is the thoroughfare of the nine borders; it cannot be left unattended. If there is any negligence, the capital will be thrown into chaos." The Emperor said
, "According to your report, who is suitable for this position?" Zhang Sheng said, "The generals and officers of the capital have never faced a major enemy and are unfit for such a heavy responsibility.
The troops from the outer provinces are unlikely to arrive immediately. I will strive to take on this position to share Your Majesty's worries." The Emperor said, "You are a civil official, yet unexpectedly
you are also skilled in military affairs; this is a blessing for the nation." He then asked who should be appointed as general, and Zhang replied, "No one is better than my wife." The emperor was overjoyed and exclaimed
, "Heroes indeed come from one family!" Zhang then petitioned, "We must order General Wang Feibao of Gansu to advance and launch a joint attack; only then will we be completely safe
." All his requests were granted.
The next morning at court, the emperor bestowed upon Zhang Sheng the titles of Grand Marshal of the Nine Garrisons, General of the Divine Strategy Army, and Grand Chancellor in charge of military, civilian, official, and barbarian affairs
. He was granted a white banner, a yellow battle-axe, and the Imperial Sword, and was authorized to execute first and report later, with the sole power of life and death. The Ministry of War was to provide troops, the Ministry of Revenue to transport grain, and
all military and civilian officials throughout the empire were to be at his disposal. Zhang Sheng thanked the emperor for his gratitude, mustered 100,000 troops, and set off immediately. The emperor bestowed upon him three cups of imperial wine,
and all officials saw him off at the capital gate for a farewell banquet. It was a magnificent display of military might; the troops were arrayed in all directions, their ranks divided into five colors. The left was fierce,
the right valiant, the front imposing, and the rear... Powerful crossbows thronged the center; crimson banners shone like the sun, white flags gleamed like the moon, blue canopies floated like clouds, black flags billowed like mist, all accompanied by
yellow axes. Vast and imposing, thunderous halberds and frosty spears surged like waves; awe-inspiring, thunderous drums thundered, their momentum like a mountain shifting. Clad in gray armor,
the charging soldiers were as brave as dragons; brandishing swords and wielding spears, the fighting men were as fierce as tigers. The shield-blocking soldiers possessed the skill to cut down horses; the bird-headed soldiers
had the wonder to break wolf-tooth rakes. At the sound of a drum, the various camps seized swords and displayed their might; with raised clubs and resounding gongs, the generals followed the ranks in a winding, orderly fashion. It was no less impressive than
the Yellow Emperor's defeat of Chiyou, a mountain of soldiers rising from the earth.
The army's discipline was solemn, and they arrived in Xi'an without a word. Zhang Sheng ordered the camp to be set up and the troops to remain stationary. The Prefect of Xi'an, Yu Bin,
asked, "Reinforcements are needed as urgently as a fire, yet the Marshal is not advancing. Why?" Zhang Sheng replied, "An army that has marched a thousand miles will tire itself without a fight.
Now I lead an army of 100,000; if we reach Xi'an in less than half a month, we will be utterly exhausted. " " A hasty attack will surely demoralize the enemy. I have already sent someone to inform
the General of the Gansu Prefecture, agreeing to advance on a certain day. Last night, under cover of darkness, we arrived at the city walls and sent the notification letter to Zhong Rongzheng. We only need to wait for the appointed day
to defeat the enemy." Yu Bin, seeing how easily he spoke, withdrew with some skepticism.
Before they knew it, it was Mid-Autumn Festival. Zhang Sheng invited the prefect to the army camp and instructed him: "The old camp is here. I trouble you, Prefect, to take care of things.
Tonight, watch me defeat the enemy." "The order was given: men must hold their mouths shut, horses must have their bells removed, and advance into the bandit camp. It was the third watch of
the night; the moon was dim, the autumn wind was rustling, and the bandits were fast asleep. A cannon fired, and they charged in with shouts of battle. The bandits scrambled to their feet,
men without armor, horses without saddles. Zhang's troops set fire to the camp, illuminating the entire area. The Gansu army
attacked from the north, Zhang's troops from the south, and Zhong's troops emerged from the city, launching a three-pronged attack. The fighting was fierce; the white grass turned crimson,
the yellow sand stained red, and blood flowed freely." Flowing rivers, corpses piled high like mountains. Horses, saddled and neighing mournfully, swords crossed and lying on their heads. Deep wounds still drip blood,
broken hearts still breathe. Heads shattered, camel hooves strong, bodies torn by frost-covered swords. Generals severed necks, their golden armor flowing yellow; soldiers perished,
their battle robes gleaming green. Crows mourn, squirrels weep… Dreams haunt the golden chambers, marriages separated from the homeland. Yearning for kingship, only to find their hearts empty of
war. Growing amidst brocade and silk, now scattered on the Yinshan desert. Hatred transforms into rumbling ghosts, sorrowful shores are shrouded in thick, damp clouds. Testing the wind and rain on the battlefield, listening to
the mournful cries.
??? The battle raged until dawn, the enemy army of two hundred thousand, more than half lost. The wounded, another half. Zhong Rongzheng urged his troops to pursue, the enemy
leader Zhang Dazheng led the remaining troops to flee. A cannon shot rang out, and Wang Feibao appeared, shouting: "General Wang Huzi of Gansu
is here, dismount and surrender!" "The bandit generals Wu Lang and Bei Rong charged out, but before three exchanges were complete, Wu Lang was killed with a spear, and Bei Rong with a sword
. They then led their troops in a fierce attack, cutting off most of the enemy's army. Seeing the overwhelming force, Zhang Dazheng led his defeated troops westward. As the banners opened,
Nü Ying appeared, saying, 'Traitor, surrender quickly, or you will be spared!' Zhang Dazheng's son, Zhang Long, came out to meet them, brandishing his sword and mace. They fought for ten
rounds, but Nü Ying struck him with her mace and killed him instantly. The troops then engaged in a chaotic massacre, preventing any retreat. Dazheng led his troops down another route. Before they had
gone several miles, a cannon fired, and the heroine appeared, shouting, 'Traitor, wait! I am here!'" "Zhang Hu, Zhang Biao, and
Zhang Qiu charged out together. The heroine cleaved Zhang Hu in two with her sword, wounded Zhang Biao, and captured Zhang Qiu alive. Da Zheng was horrified and dared not charge
the battle. He led his defeated troops to flee towards Qian Mountain, leaving him with only a thousand or so cavalry. Fortunately, there were no soldiers on this road, so he continued onward.
As they approached Qian Mountain, a cannon blast rang out, and the banners of the imperial expedition were raised. A general appeared, about twenty years old, with a face like jade,
white teeth and red lips, carrying a halberd, riding a black Qilin, and shouting loudly: 'The Grand Marshal of the Nine Borders, General Zhang Zai of the Divine Strategy Army
, is here! Come and face your death!' " "The Grand Commander ordered Deng Zhuang to meet the enemy. Before they could even exchange blows, he wielded his halberd and knocked them off their horses. Yao Xiang and Wu
Neng both charged forward, but Zhang Sheng fired two fire dragon darts, killing the two generals before they could even clash. Dong Cheng, Xie Fang, Cao De, Ruan Hu, An Yong, and
Hu Xiong then charged forward. Zhang Sheng fired another 'flying locust' dart, and all six generals were struck in the face and died. He shouted, 'Those who are not afraid of death, come quickly!'" "
The soldiers let out a shout and scattered in all directions. Zhang Sheng spurred his horse, brandishing his halberd, and pursued Zhang Dazheng. Seeing that the situation was unfavorable, Dazheng abandoned his armor and
weapons, and fled over the mountains with only a short sword. Zhang Sheng did not pursue him, but instead led his troops back.
On the way, he bumped into Zhong Zi. The two met, their joy and sorrow mingling as they recounted their longing and yearning after three years apart, and rode side by side
. Zhang Sheng camped his troops outside the city and entrusted them to two female generals. Zhong Zi, having already rewarded Zhang Sheng, welcomed him into the city and held a banquet to celebrate his victory
. When they mentioned Dazheng's escape over the mountains, Zhong Zi sighed, "It's a pity the bandit leader escaped." Zhang Sheng said, "I will capture him."
Suddenly, a report came that Zhang Zhong and Zhang Yi had captured Zhang Dazheng outside and were awaiting orders. Zhang Sheng ordered him to be put on the prison cart. Zhong Zi asked, "
How did the marshal know he would take this route and ambush him?" Zhang Sheng replied, "The other day when the troops were stationed in Xi'an, I secretly scouted the terrain,
so I deployed heavy troops to block him on all sides." Under cover of night, they raided the camp, waiting for the enemy soldiers to become disorganized. Each commander led his elite troops to guard key routes, calculating that
by the time Da Zheng reached Qianshan, his men and horses would be exhausted. He believed that if he personally led troops to block Da Zheng, Da Zheng would surely cross the mountain. Therefore, he ordered Zhang Zhong and Zhang Yi to ambush Da Zheng at dangerous points, digging
pits. When Da Zheng arrived, without Zhang Zhong
even needing a single arrow, the enemy leader would be captured. Zhong Zi said, "Brother, your military strategy is divine, comparable to Zhuge Liang." Zhang Sheng replied, "Relying on your mighty power, I defeated this petty clown; how dare I claim credit?" When the wine was half-finished,
Zhong Zi rose and offered a cup, looking at Zhang Sheng with his eyes. Zhang Sheng smiled and accepted the cup. Both men were interested in each other, but could not speak. He wanted to stay the night, but Zhang Sheng's wife
was in the army, leaving him with no choice.
The next day, Wang Huzi took his leave and returned to Gansu. Three days later, Zhang Sheng bid farewell to Zhong Zi and returned home to report. Zhong Zi kept him in the inner chamber.
After dismissing everyone else, he prepared wine to entertain them. Recalling events from three years prior, Zhang Sheng said, "Our fate was unkind and our connection shallow, and I was repeatedly thwarted. Thinking of this
scene again, how could it ever be repeated?" Soon after, at dusk, the lamps were lit, and they removed their overcoats and drank heartily together. As the night deepened, Zhong Zi rose,
taking advantage of the wine, and proposed to join them. Zhang Sheng said, "We are both ministers, how could we do such a thing?" Zhong Zi replied, "Three years have passed since we parted,
and I have longed to see you without being able to. Humans are not plants or trees; our feelings are deeply moved. Before, when we were surrounded by soldiers and all reinforcements were cut off, I knew I was doomed
. I only regretted not being able to say goodbye to you, brother, to keep our love alive, hoping to meet you in a dream and end this karmic entanglement. Brother, you led troops to our rescue, and I was
fortunate to be alive when we met again. All that I have lost is thanks to you. We met again so soon, and now you are saying goodbye again, facing execution together
. How could I dare to keep you here? From this moment on, I don't know when we will meet again. Speaking of this, a moment is worth more than a thousand pieces of gold!
My heart is breaking inch by inch. You have prevented me from this brief moment of joy; how can you bear to leave me like this?" He finished speaking and tears fell. Zhang also lowered his head and remained silent
. Zhong then forced him onto the bed, and Zhang could not refuse, letting him do as he pleased. Zhong untied his trousers and helped him into the bed. Three years of longing,
reunited in a single day, how joyful they were! Zhong, unleashing his horse, stormed the gate. Zhang said, "It's been a long time since we've fought. Let's wait until both armies are arrayed before the great battle
." Zhong gently and slowly pulled. Soon, Zhang's lustful desire overflowed, spraying like pearly mist. Zhong thrust again
, head to tail, the thick, white fluid flowing backward, wetting the mat at the tailbone. The surging fluid trickled
out with Zhong's penis, dripping down with his gall bladder. Taking advantage of Zhang's momentary lapse in concentration, Zhong suddenly pulled out his weapon.
Zhang, bewildered, tried to retrieve it, but Zhong hesitated, carefully pausing at the gate. Zhang's buttocks itched
unbearably, his body swaying, rising and falling, sometimes bobbing, sometimes thrashing, no longer aware of his own power. Zhang was exhausted, and
Zhong's pleasure was exhausted too. How long had their pleasure lasted? The copper pot had been struck by a hail of arrows five times. They then ceased sleeping, drinking and talking and laughing,
while the army hastily set off again. Zhong Zi saw them off for ten li, bidding them farewell with tears in his eyes. It was truly a scene of: A thousand mountains of red trees, ten thousand mountains of clouds, raising our cups, gazing
at each other as the sun sets.
A farewell song, two lines of tears, I wonder where we will meet again.
Zhang Zi returned to the capital, presenting the captives to the Emperor. The Emperor ordered the execution of Zhang Dazheng as a warning to the future, and
enfeoffed Zhang Sheng as Earl of Guannei, appointing him Minister of Rites. His mother was enfeoffed as Lady Zhaozhong, his wife and daughter as Lady Zhongyong, and his daughter Jie as Lady Zhongyi. Wang Feibao was enfeoffed as
Earl of Guanwai. Zhong Tunan was enfeoffed as Earl of Shaanxi, acting as Governor-General, permanently stationed in Shaanxi. The accompanying soldiers were rewarded according to their merits.
Three years later, Sichuan was in great turmoil, which the government troops could not control. The governor was killed, prefectures and counties were destroyed, and repeated campaigns failed. The officials all submitted a memorial stating,
"Zhang Ji, the Earl of Guannei, is well-suited for the position." The Emperor approved the memorial, appointing Zhang Sheng as Grand Marshal of the Western Expedition,
in charge of all military and civilian officials and civilians throughout the land, granting him the title of General of the Divine Strategy, bestowing upon him a white banner, a yellow battle-axe, and the Imperial Sword, granting him the authority to decide life and death, bestowing upon him a dragon and phoenix banner, and personally
presenting him with the four characters "Acting on Behalf of Heaven to Suppress the Enemy." Zhang Sheng and his wife led their troops, advancing at double speed. They
reached Jian Pass, the most formidable obstacle in Western Sichuan. The bandit general guarding the pass was Tong Daozheng, with generals Wei Shan and Xin Qi. Their strategist
, the Lazy Taoist, was skilled in sorcery, able to summon wind and fog in battle, and divine soldiers to aid them; the bandits relied on him as a great wall. Hearing of Zhang Sheng's leadership and
knowing his reputation, he consulted the Lazy Taoist. The Taoist said, "It's alright, General, go and see him for a while, then you'll know his strength and we
can discuss it further."
The next day, Tong Daozheng led his troops down the pass. Xin Qi went out, and Nü Ying engaged him in battle. After thirty rounds of fierce fighting, Nüying feigned an
opening and fled. Xin Qi pursued, but Nüying turned and shot an arrow, striking Xin Qi in the forehead, killing him
instantly. Zhang Sheng then mobilized his army, wreaking havoc. Tong Daozheng, defeated and heading towards the pass, consulted with the Lazy Taoist, saying, "Zhang Sheng is indeed formidable; he wounded
Xin Qi in a single battle. What should we do?" The Lazy Taoist replied, "No need to worry. Tonight, General, you will raid the camp. With my assistance and divine wind,
we can capture Zhang Ji." Tong Daozheng was overjoyed.
Meanwhile, Zhang Sheng returned to his camp victorious. As he sat in his tent discussing matters, a sudden gust of wind blew the commander's flag several times. Zhang Sheng said, "Tonight
, bandits will surely raid the camp. My two virtuous wives, lie in ambush and await the attack. I will ride alone and take advantage of their departure to seize the pass." Having devised a plan
, they each led their troops to lie in ambush at a distance, leaving only an empty camp. Meanwhile, Tong Daozheng and the Lazy Taoist led their troops straight into Zhang's camp, shouting and fighting
, only to find it empty. A desperate cry
of "We've fallen into a trap! " Torches blazed from all sides, and drums and gongs resounded. From the left, Nüying; from the right, Nüjie; in front, Zhang Zhong; and behind, Zhang Yi—they surrounded and attacked. Wei Shan had already been killed by the chaotic army. Seeing the situation was dire, the lazy Taoist
drew his sword and cast a spell: a sudden gust of wind darkened the sky, and soon fog and clouds rose. At first, dust and sand swirled, then
stones and bricks were tossed about. In the shadow of the black wind, the three armies scattered in chaos, and the generals were frantic in the dismal fog. Drums and gongs were abandoned, littering the ground; corpses lay strewn and horses fell—
a truly pitiful sight. The Taoist priest , riding the wind, broke through the encirclement, while Zhang Zhong and Zhang Yi were both seriously wounded. Nüying, seeing the strange wind from her horse, knew it was sorcery. She drew her sword, chanted incantations, and pointed it, and the wind ceased. She ordered her army to give chase. Nüying and Nüjie led the way, followed by the rest of the army, sweeping forward. Tong Daozheng was walking forward when he suddenly saw pursuers approaching urgently. He urged his troops to the pass. He shouted for the gate to be opened, and with a drumbeat, a banner proclaiming "Conquering on Behalf of Heaven" was raised on the pass. As the gate opened, Zhang Sheng galloped up on horseback. Tong Daozheng was caught off guard and was struck down from his horse by Zhang Sheng's halberd. Seeing the situation was bad, the lazy Taoist tried to escape on a demonic cloud, but Zhang Sheng used his flying grab to smash him down from the cloud, ending his life. Then, Nü Ying and Nü Jie joined forces and went to the pass. The bandit leader Wei Yuan, upon hearing the news, retreated without a fight. He had been stationed in the prefecture for eighteen years. Nü Ying gave birth to a son named Zhang Wei and a daughter named Zhen Niang. Nü Jie gave birth to a son named Zhang Yi. He was summoned back to the capital, granted the title of Marquis within the Pass, and appointed Junior Guardian. He retired and said to his wives, "From a civil official to Junior Guardian, and from a military official to a marquis, this is the pinnacle for a commoner. If we do not retire gracefully, there will be a risk of overreaching." His two daughters agreed wholeheartedly. He submitted his resignation nine times before it was finally granted. He then returned to his original home. Wang Huzi also retired to live a life of leisure. He devoted his days to poetry and wine, traveling to famous mountains and great rivers, and never spoke of worldly affairs. Zhongzi, hearing of this, also resigned his official post and went into seclusion. They had two daughters and one son. The son married Zhang Zhenniang, and the daughters married Zhang Wei and Zhang Yi. Later, all three sons passed the imperial examinations, and their marriages continued unbroken for generations. To this day, this is considered a beautiful story in Tianjin. [The End ]
