Chapter Thirty-Six
"No! Stop...stop!"
Quills slumped in a pool of blood, staring at me in terror. In my hand was a
longsword made of ice. He trembled as he continued to beg for mercy, but his lips had barely parted when the ice sword pierced his shoulder. His pleas
turned into screams that echoed around us. Without hesitation, I pulled out the ice sword and slashed it with a cold light. His right arm
flew to the side like a broken piece of rotten wood, and a large amount of blood gushed out from the clean cut. He stared in disbelief
at his severed arm not far away, then at his own bleeding shoulder, and he stopped screaming. His eyes
were wide open to their limit in disbelief.
"You..."
He uttered only one word, seemingly wanting to say something more, but the ice sword had already slashed across his cheek from one side to the other
, his increasingly distorted features becoming ferocious and grotesque. His empty right arm seemed to still be reaching for me, and the twisting of his body
caused blood to splatter before my eyes, a crimson blur, until the blood seeped into my eyeballs, the stinging pain forcing me to open
my eyes.
It's that dream again. I've been having similar dreams for the past few days. Since encountering Quills, I've basically lost
all my memories. The last thing I remember is Thorne trying to trap me in an ice prison, and then everything is
blank. Now I remember something Argus said to me before: when he found me
, I wasn't alone. He didn't continue. Could that dream have been real?
Argus, who suddenly offered to tutor me individually, hasn't shown up for the past few days. Riley told me that
Argus is sick and might need to rest for a few days. I've been reassigned to my regular classes. The
magic Argus taught me before this did help me a lot, but some of the spells interspersed throughout gave me an ominous
feeling.
The memory-reading spell—I recently asked Ross about it indirectly, but Ross said he'd never heard of such
magic, and even if it existed, it would definitely be a forbidden spell. This made me connect the dots of recent events
. If the manipulator Jester really was a student of Sriland, then Argus's notebook
is very likely the magic book that various countries demand schools hand over. But why would Argus specifically teach it to me? And if the dream was
real, why would Argus take such a big risk to help me? He even specifically asked about the mark on my chest
, the mark left by Xiu when he sealed my demonic blood. So, when I entered Jester's memories
, he mentioned the term "Dragon's Eye." Does this mean only those with dragon blood can use this magic? In other
words, Jester is also a sealer?
Although these are just my deductions, if I'm right, at least these things make sense. If
Argus also knows these things, what is he planning now? I need to figure out his purpose. Perhaps I can
read his memories? In the last lesson, I was able to easily overcome the ape-beast's resistance, but it is, after all,
a wild beast. I don't know how my target will feel. What would happen if it were a human
? But Jester once expelled me from his memories, so I must proceed with caution.
After breakfast, Ross and I went to the training ground for breaking the magic stone. Ross told me that because our group had performed
well and I was suddenly absent, and there were no extra substitutes, the school had to temporarily declare our
group a victory without a fight. This exam score would directly affect Jay's scholarship application. Although Jay
hadn't said anything these past few days, she seemed somewhat uneasy. This victory without a fight was probably something she
had obtained by using her body against Fitch.
Jay was unexpectedly late today. As the class monitor, she was always very proactive, and Ross was also
a little surprised.
"Class monitor, you're late! Today's competition is very important!"
"I know, Ross, just don't drag us down,"
Jay's retort was as sharp as ever, seemingly without much problem. She turned to look at me.
"Is Ren alright? If you're not feeling well, I can ask the teacher to postpone it for two more days."
"Ah... I'm fine."
"Class monitor, really, why do you only care about Ren and not me?"
Jay rolled her eyes at Ross and turned to walk towards the preparation room. More and more students were gathering around. Because of Argus
's absence, the competition was being hosted by the Potions teacher, Remus Donk. The somewhat elderly man had a
kind face, and he spoke in his usual slow voice,
"Ross, the opposing team has arrived. If you're ready, please go to the preparation room to wait."
"Oh, okay,"
Ross agreed, pulling me into the waiting room. Jay was already familiarizing herself with the spells, and the resolute expression on her face
told me that today's competition was very important. I turned to look at Ross, and he had also dropped his usual joking attitude
and started checking that he had everything he needed.
"By the way, who's our opponent group today?"
"Huh? Didn't we tell you? You must have forgotten. It's going to be a tough battle today. Our opponent is
Fiona Silvia, known as the Ice Rose. But don't mention that nickname in front of her. It
's not just because of her blue hair and aloof attitude. Her ice magic is arguably the best among all the students
."
"I remember she mainly used lightning magic in the last competition."
"Oh, that's because she thought it was unnecessary. Basically, no one has been able to win against her ice magic
. Anyway, don't dampen your spirits. You'd better watch out."
Jay just sat there listening quietly. She was obviously very nervous. If she lost this battle
, her scholarship would probably be completely gone, and all her efforts would probably be in vain. I also checked
the dark crystal ring on my hand. Its weight had obviously increased again. It seemed that I had released a lot of magic power during my amnesia
. Not long after, enthusiastic applause came from outside. The teaching assistant at the door nodded to indicate that we could
go out.
We walked down the long, narrow corridor, with Jay at the front and Ross and I following on either side. I could see
that Jay's hands were trembling slightly, and Ross seemed to notice as well, whispering to me,
"Fiona has always been the class president's rival in scholarship applications, but they've never directly clashed."
"But the class monitor always has a slight advantage in credits because of his hard work. This time, thanks to you, you'd
better perform well, or we'll be in trouble.
" "Me?"
"Yeah, generally speaking, it's hard for our class and their class to be assigned together. This time, your absence has disrupted
the assignment order."
As we spoke, we had already walked onto the field. In the middle of the field was an open space, with huge anti-magic stone
pillars standing among the surrounding boulders. The students on the platform clapped and cheered happily. After all, this was not their
battle, and they could enjoy this moment without worry. The boys on the platform whistled towards the opposite side.
Fiona, with her light blue long hair, walked out with her head held high and her chest out. Every step made her breasts
tremble slightly. The black and white school uniform tightly hugged her perfect curves. It seemed that this school uniform was
designed for her. Behind her were the bespectacled boy we had seen before and an equally beautiful girl.
The nickname they gave Fiona wasn't without reason. She stood not far in front of us
, but her eyes held a chilling aura that kept everyone at arm's length. Her indifferent gaze swept
over us, finally settling on Jay's face, where their eyes met.
"Ahem,"
a loud cough echoed from the stage. Professor Remus glanced at us, now ready, and
nodded to his middle-aged male assistant. The man gently opened his spellbook, and a ball of light
flew out, bursting into the sky with a dazzling burst of light. The battle was about to begin.
"They haven't even greeted each other yet,"
Fitch whispered beside Remus. Remus frowned, his already wrinkled brow furrowing as he
slowly replied.
"Oh… look at my memory!"
The sudden battle startled us all, but those of us who had reached this point had all defeated numerous
groups. After a brief pause, we scattered and ran, using basic magic to cover ourselves.
After a brief magical exchange, the center of the arena was empty. From my current position, I couldn't see Ross and Jaie
. The fireballs that had been flying around had disrupted our planned route. I sharpened my hearing; footsteps were
approaching. Ten steps, five steps... The bespectacled boy appeared behind a rock to my right, his
fire dragon, already poised to strike, hurtling towards me. But I had already heard his arrival and heard the
roaring flames.
The fire dragon flew a short distance along his arm before the ice wall he had prepared instantly cooled
the surrounding air. He recoiled in surprise. The ice wall cut off the fire dragon's magical support, and I
easily blocked it with my ice shield. I then hurled three ice spears in his direction. The spears successfully merged into the ice wall and
flew to the other side, but due to the ice wall, I couldn't determine if they hit him. However, the bright light that immediately appeared behind the ice wall
negated my expectation.
The mist from the clash of ice and fire billowed out, filling the space between the boulders. However, the moisture also obscured his
vision, forcing him to lean against the stone wall and frantically search for my location. With my enhanced vision, I clearly saw
him, and a slight smile involuntarily appeared on my lips. The rapidly cooling air made him shiver; only then did he
realize he was within a highly condensing mist. He quickly erected a wind wall to try and disperse the mist, but
the consequences of abandoning the incantation were too obvious. Before the wind could gather, he was firmly trapped
inside by my Ice Prison spell. I understood his helplessness, for I had been trapped by Jester with the same magic before
. But this was not the time for sympathy, for I could already hear Ross's shouts from not far behind.
After navigating several turns, I saw Ross running frantically, his incantation never
ceasing. Despite this, I knew the girl chasing him wasn't gaining the upper hand; the bright blue lightning bolts
only struck behind Ross each time. Ross's strength lay in his ability to
simultaneously chant wind magic in his mind while casting his spells. Many didn't understand why his seemingly clumsy magic, unable to even abandon the chanting
, possessed such immense power and speed.
The girl before me clearly underestimated Ross. A
confident smile, as if she'd learned it from Fiona, graced her face as she attempted to throw her lightning sword. But Ross stopped chanting abruptly,
turning and hurling his Cross of Light Prison. Cross of Light Prison was the longest incantation among mid-level light magic. While
its release lacked a dazzling, intimidating effect, resembling a simple light magic projectile, its speed was
the fastest of all mid-level spells. Even so, due to its immense length, it
was often abandoned in speed-based attacks.
As the lightning sword pierced the sphere of light, the girl's eyes widened in surprise. The azure, translucent sword
was sucked into the sphere as it passed, and the sphere continued to accelerate. The wind magic amplified the spell's
incredible speed. While the girl was still contemplating her next move, the sphere struck her
abdomen. Instantly, four beams of holy light erupted from her body, forming a gigantic
cross. The massive cross of light still emitted residual electricity from the absorbed lightning magic
. Without the magic-dispelling stone, the girl would likely have been electrocuted.
This previously underestimated spell now shone brightly, drawing cheers from the audience. The Cross of Light Prison itself
was a control spell without offensive power, but its ability to absorb magic it touched as a secondary ability was significant. Ross gave
me an exaggerated smile, reminding me of what he had once told me: "These spells exist for
a reason. Just because people don't pay attention doesn't mean they're unimportant. I love these overlooked spells; they can catch you off guard
, haha."
"Looks like I underestimated you,"
Fiona's voice suddenly rang out from behind. In my joy, I lowered my guard and didn't notice
her approach. Along with the voice came the chilling air; a layer of cold air surrounded her, making
her appear shimmering. Where was Jay? Had she already lost?
The ground froze rapidly, and sharp ice spikes began to emerge from the solidified surface. Ross had taken cover...
Behind me, someone said,
"It's up to you. I don't know fire magic."
Mid-level mages can generally only learn a maximum of three elemental spells. Ross specializes in wind, light, and earth magic
, while I specialize in fire, ice, and lightning. Jie also knows fire magic, so how could she be defeated so quickly
? My question was quickly answered. My fire dragon spell was forcefully suppressed by the pervasive cold air
. Her ice magic was too powerful, seemingly beyond the scope of mid-level magic.
"Run!"
This was my instinctive response to Ross. He exclaimed in surprise, but still obediently teleported
away, while Fiona chased after me.
"Let me see your abilities. You've been the talk of the town lately."
Whether it was my imagination or not, her tone seemed to carry a hint of anger. Could it be that
she, who had always been the center of attention, was jealous because I had stolen her thunder? This reminded me of
something a man once said in a tavern: "Beautiful women like that all have terrible tempers." But thinking about it more carefully… Besides Anna
, even Celia occasionally throws tantrums. Not to mention Jessica…
After dodging a few ice spikes, I realized I couldn't shake her off. She kept raising ice spikes to stab me, but fortunately,
my martial arts skills allowed me to nimbly dodge each attack. If it were an ordinary mage, they would probably have been turned into an ice
hedgehog by now. She was also annoyed by my constant dodging, saying,
"All you can do is dodge, what kind of man are you?"
I turned around and gave her as bright a smile as possible, which made her even angrier. She quietly
chanted a spell, her hands forming a triangle in front of her chest, and
a blue particle of light began to rapidly condense between her hands. I had seen this spell in a book; it was already in the category of high-level spells. She was indeed
no longer just a mid-level mage. Just as she was about to cast the spell on me, Ross
's shout suddenly rang out behind me.
"I'm ready!"
She turned back to look at Ross in surprise. The situation was very unfavorable for her, but
she was puzzled as to why Ross hadn't launched a sneak attack. However, I had already teleported in front of her, another unexpected
move. Normally, mages would habitually keep their distance. My actions left her wondering about my purpose.
Instinctively, she teleported backward, but then she realized my plan. Ross had erected
a tall earthen wall behind her, blocking her teleportation because it couldn't pass through physical form. The lightning wrapped around my hand
made her look around in panic.
As I fled, I left behind many iron beads engraved with lightning runes,
traps set to quickly gather lightning. She, focused solely on killing me, overlooked these small objects, and now it was
time for her to pay the price. Having seen through my intentions, she had no choice but to fight with all her might,
pushing out the already gathered ball of light with both hands. But I was already close enough to strike her wrist with my left hand, deflecting the ball.
The lightning in my right hand immediately resonated with the surrounding runes, and a powerful lightning-infused palm strike
landed on her soft, firm abdomen, the lightning spreading rapidly.
Actually, this palm strike shouldn't have touched her abdomen, as she was covered by a layer of ice.
While the lightning could barely penetrate it, it wouldn't have been enough to harm her. But I forcibly broke through it with an energetic palm strike
. Although it was somewhat unfair, her arrogance made me want to teach her a lesson
. Of course, most importantly, this competition concerned Jie's scholarship, and I couldn't afford to hold back.
Almost everything unfolded according to Ross's plan. Earlier in the preparation room, Ross had already
explained the intelligence and plan he had gathered. The other two, besides Fiona, were also formidable, but each had obvious
weaknesses: one was complacent, the other nearsighted, and the four-eyed man knew fire magic, so using ice magic to confront him would quickly
blur his vision. The girl, constantly protected by Fiona, had become somewhat careless; once she began to show signs of weakness ,
her weaknesses could be easily exploited.
As for the one who encountered Fiona at the start, he could only pray for good luck and try to stall, as her weaknesses were
extremely difficult to discern, and numerical superiority became his only advantage. Although some cheating methods were used, the
match finally ended smoothly.
An unbelievable silence fell over the stage for a few seconds, followed by enthusiastic cheers. Ross laughed
and waved to the stage, while Fiona slumped in disbelief, unable to comprehend how easily her ice shield had been
broken. If it had been just a regular palm strike that broke the shield, she would have had a chance to escape. At this moment, Jae was also
freed and walked over, her face no longer showing the unease she had before the match, but rather radiating the joy of victory.
"Unbelievable, Fiona actually lost, her first time, right?"
"Well, there's nothing she can do, the other two are really strong, even she couldn't do much."
"What was that light-based cross just now?" "
I remember it was a cross-shaped light prison, I didn't expect it to look so cool after it hit."
"Yeah, it's amazing that someone would use such an obscure spell."
"Those three are really reckless, no wonder Fiona was caught off guard."
"Haha, but it's rare to see Ice Rose change her aloof expression."
"Keep your voice down, or you'll regret it."
The stage erupted in heated discussion, like a pot boiling over. I extended my right hand to Fiona, she looked up at
me, the confusion in her eyes quickly returning to its indifference, but she still grabbed my hand and stood up.
"You guys won this time. I underestimated you, but... never mind, congratulations."
Her congratulations at the end sounded a little forced; she clearly didn't say that often. The pause in the middle indicated she
was still somewhat confused about how I broke the shield, but she didn't ask. After speaking, she turned and left
the arena. The bespectacled man and the girl followed her out, looking dejected. The three of us left amidst enthusiastic cheers
, while Reid waited in the rest room with a broad smile.
Seeing Reid's radiant smile, Ross happily went up to him.
"See? You trusted me, didn't you?"
"Haha, I really didn't expect you to actually win! Here, this is your share."
Red handed Ross a small bag, from which silver coins clinked crisply. Clearly, Red had
made quite a bit of money again from his private betting scheme; after all, Fiona was a hot favorite. Jay frowned and said,
"Red, you're still doing this kind of thing? Be careful the teacher finds out and expels you!"
"Don't say that, Jay. I'm just earning some living expenses. I'm not like you with such
good grades, almost always getting scholarships."
Jay wanted to continue lecturing, but Ross interrupted her.
"You must have made a lot this time, thanks to me. Tell me about anything interesting that's happened lately."
"You always try to get information out of me, but this time it really is thanks to you. I'll tell you
something."
"Hehe."
"The biggest thing lately is that there's been a second explosion outside, similar to the one in Catherine
, but this time it happened deep in the mountains. Luckily, there were no casualties, but it's said that someone saw a huge
monster lurking in the mountains before the explosion, seemingly related to the monster that escaped from Catherine."
A second explosion? If it's similar to Catherine's situation, could it be that another sealing crystal has been damaged? And
what about the monsters he mentioned? Are those monsters that escaped from the Bloodlust Mine continuing to destroy the sealing
crystals? That doesn't make sense; they're just rampaging beasts, how could they
act with such a purpose?
"Another thing, I don't know if you've noticed, but Quills hasn't appeared for a long time. The school seems
to have started a secret search for him. Even his high-level mage bodyguard, Thorne, has disappeared. To this day,
no one knows their whereabouts. It's said that Quills recently had a conflict with a student and
had been looking for him for a while before disappearing. I'm afraid that student is the key."
That student is me... But Quills really is missing. My recent dreams are probably real. Why
can't I remember anything? The last coma was different from the previous demonic blood attack. I completely lost
consciousness, and the demonic blood was clearly sealed. So what made me like that? I can feel
the ruthlessness and indifference in the dream, which is different from the anger and bloodlust before.
I needed to know what happened that night, but Argus was still refusing to see anyone, and I needed
someone to experiment with memory reading—an ordinary person. Perhaps I should try my luck in the shopping district. I
said goodbye to Rosejay and left. This victory gave us a day and a half to rest, and I had
to make good use of that time. Leaving the training ground, I headed straight for the shopping district, but I hadn't gone far
when I saw a ready-made target.
