Chapter Four: The Island of the Park
Early the next morning, before dawn, I quietly left the house to wake Mao Yan'an and A Xue, instructing them to pack their bags and leave with me.
A Xue, still half-asleep, had no idea what I was doing; she simply obeyed my orders, grabbed her luggage, and left. The cunning Mao Yan'an, however, seemed to have anticipated my move. He hadn't slept at all, but sat on his straw mat, gazing out the window at the scenery.
The dog tribe's hospitality was truly snobbish. My room had a mud bed, but Mao Yan'an's room had nothing but a tattered straw mat haphazardly laid out—a truly insincere display. It seemed that "Master Mao's" reputation was completely useless in this small village. But Mao Yan'an privately boasted to me that he had seduced at least seven dog tribe women on that straw mat in the past two days—a feat that was certainly something to be proud of.
"Uncle, you're pretty good, getting women so easily. Your middle-aged charm is terrifying."
"...It's alright. The secret is actually very simple: just close your eyes, don't be picky, and there are plenty of thirsty, resentful women in this world."
This condition is somewhat sad, but it's the truth. Although the unscrupulous middle-aged man had a glorious record these past two days, looking at all the dog-tribe women in the entire village, the only one I would want to sleep with was probably Shaye. The rest were either unattractive or had too much fur, making them repulsive. If I were to have relations with them, it would be... let them rape me.
After leaving the village, we headed north, climbing mountains and traversing forests, wanting to explore what kind of ferocious beasts the dog-tribe people were so afraid of.
Not long after we set off, a commotion broke out in the house where I was spending the night. Old Dog Huangshi led a large group of dog-tribe warriors, rushing into the house as if they had caught someone in the act, causing a huge commotion.
We, who were climbing the mountain, witnessed this scene and, looking down at the chaotic situation, couldn't help but find it incredibly funny.
"Using the same old tricks again, trying to set me up? I haven't played these outdated tricks for years... What a despicable international traitor!"
I knew Huang Shi's scheme from the start. To plead with me, he sent Shaye to seduce me, but he probably saw through my greed. Sending Shaye for a sexual transaction would likely result in her being fucked dozens or even hundreds of times, until she was pregnant, and I still wouldn't agree. So he decided to strike at the root of the problem, leading his men to raid me at dawn, catching me in the act, and then claiming I had violated the priestess of the dog tribe and demanding I pay the price.
The plan was brilliant, but I'm an expert at these kinds of tricks, so I anticipated what would happen. Even Mao Yan'an, who was observing coldly, saw through it. This time, Huang Shi truly failed as a traitor.
"Uncle, you must have found out something yesterday, right?"
"Uh... how did you know I would..."
"Do you need to ask? It's not like this is the first time we've traveled together. With your despicable personality, and your ability to scare even paparazzi to death, one night is more than enough for you to uncover all the secrets of this village."
This could be described as tacit understanding, or as mutual understanding between two despicable people. It might sound strange, but I genuinely believed from the beginning that Mao Yan'an would have uncovered all the unusual things in this village last night.
Compared to him, my other companion was quite useless, still half-asleep, lying on Violet, being carried by the leopard, her fox tail swaying, her little mouth murmuring about breakfast.
"According to my investigation, it's true that your grandfather rescued this dog clan when they fled to the East Sea and were being hunted down. However, your Farrell family never does anything for free. After driving off the enemy, Master Lant also raped all the virgins on the dog clan's ship, half of whom later became pregnant and gave birth. This became a great disgrace to the village... By the way, the beautiful widow you had sex with last night that the whole village could hear, do you think she might be..."
"Of course not, don't overthink it."
I immediately rejected Mao Yan'an's guess, but I wasn't so sure myself. If Shaye really had Farrell blood, this question would probably bother me a lot, but it was a question I couldn't bear to think about. There are
over ten million people in Sara City. Heaven knows how many of their mothers and grandmothers were slept with by my grandfather? And how many women are related to me by blood? The Farrell family before my grandfather wasn't exactly benevolent either. If I were to delve into this issue, I'd never have to sleep with a woman again.
Mao Yan'an also discovered another astonishing problem. In the dog tribe's village, apart from Old Yellow Stone Dog, we saw almost no elderly beastmen, a very unusual phenomenon. Mao Yan'an's investigation revealed a startling truth:
two years ago, the village held a ceremony to send all the elderly beastmen to the other side of the mountain to feed wild beasts. It was said that as long as the beasts were well-fed, they wouldn't cross the mountain to invade the village.
Ah Xue was shocked and couldn't believe Mao Yan'an's account, unable to accept such cruelty. But I had previously heard from Bai Lanxiong that for the beastmen, values were extremely primitive. Without combat power and productivity, one was worthless, and the elderly were such a symbol. Therefore, some overly primitive beastmen would banish an elderly beastman for every newborn, leaving them to fend for themselves to maintain the tribe's prosperity.
The canine tribe does this kind of thing. When the tribe is threatened, they voluntarily abandon the weakest part of the group, sacrificing the unproductive and non-fertile parts to ensure the continuation of the whole. From this, we can infer that the beast was truly ferocious.
"By the way, Uncle, there's something I still don't understand. What did they call this island?"
"Oh, I specifically asked last night. It's called Park Island. I heard that a long time ago, this place was called something like 'Park,' but later, to save trouble, it was called Park Island."
"Park? What park? Yellowstone National Park?"
I chuckled and walked forward. Mao Yan'an added from behind.
"Nephew, there's something I'm quite curious about. You knew you were being used, so why did you still risk coming to this hellish mountain?"
"Because I don't know how to swim, especially how to swim back to land."
Since the reality is like this, we can only actively find a way out. And we can't get the method to leave the island from the canine tribe yet. In order to obtain more resources, I have to go into the forest and understand the situation of the entire island.
I didn't intend to risk my life. The significance of this reconnaissance outweighed everything else, but...
"If you're afraid of danger, don't be a tracker. Dangerous beasts, unknown beasts—aren't these all symbols of high-priced treasures? While you're thinking about danger, I'm thinking about money! If you run away at the mention of danger, you might as well go home and cook and clean the floor. Why bother coming out here to risk your life?"
These resounding words made Ah Xue's eyes light up with admiration, and Mao Yan'an even clapped loudly and blatantly.
Their support was rare, and I felt a little guilty. However, I wasn't just putting on an act. Since personally fighting the Ten Tigers of Water City, I've gained confidence in my abilities. Although I wouldn't dare say I could run rampant with this strength, if I didn't deliberately flaunt it and simply endured and counterattacked careless attacks from enemies, I believed I could handle most troubles.
On the way to the East Sea, I had been secretly training myself in preparation for the challenges to come. If I didn't dare to take the opportunity to try, I would never know how much I had improved. If I found myself vulnerable on the battlefield, it would be too late.
Therefore, I did intend to use this opportunity to test my strength. Killing a ferocious beast should be easier than killing a powerful enemy, and if it really is some rare and exotic beast, I might be able to make a fortune from it. After all, I'm now in exile abroad, and my finances are completely cut off. Although I took some money with me when I fled, it's not good to just sit around and do nothing.
With this thought in mind, we quickly climbed over the mountains. As the forest became denser, we could indeed hear some faint roars of beasts vibrating in our ears. Just the way the leaf tips swayed violently in the sound waves showed that the unknown beasts were enormous, and from the changes in the sound, these beasts were not a single one or a single species, but a large and complex herd.
"Howl!" A sudden roar, earth-shattering, sent birds and beasts in the nearby forest scattering in panic. The sound was neither lion nor tiger; I didn't know what kind of ferocious beast it was. I looked back and saw Ah Xue with a frightened expression, but Mao Yan'an and Violet seemed quite calm. Since that was the case, I had even less reason to back down. I laughed and led my three companions up the ridge.
Reaching the top of the ridge, we looked down at the other side of the mountain and discovered a completely different scene. As far as the eye could see, there were plants I had never seen before, as if we had entered another world.
The plants resembled tropical palm trees, but they were much taller and had wider branches and leaves. However, their roots seemed to be very shallow; the slightest bump would uproot them, sending them crashing to the ground.
Some things flew in the sky, looking like a soaring eagle, but when they got close, we were all surprised and quickly dodged, because it wasn't an eagle at all, but a green dragonfly as big as an eagle, with wings as long as a human arm, flying past us at high speed, along with a group of companions behind it.
"Howl~~~" Just as we were staring in disbelief at these creatures, a ferocious roar came from the giant forest below. A huge creature, like a giant rhinoceros, but with two curved horns on its forehead, charged out of the verdant forest with astonishing momentum. I think even a lion or tiger wouldn't be able to withstand a gob from its sharp horns or a kick from its heavy feet.
But this triangular beast was not the source of the roar. Halfway through its charge, an even larger figure suddenly sprang from the forest. Its powerful claws lashed out, tearing a gruesome gash in the triangular beast. With lightning speed, as the triangular beast howled in agony, the giant beast's sharp teeth were already biting down on its neck.
The ear-piercing sound of bones shattering, along with the staggering amount of blood, caused the triangular beast to collapse. The beast that had taken its life brandished its blood-stained claws, roaring a bloodthirsty howl at the sky like a tyrant ruling over all, whipping its massive tail before lowering its head again to tear apart the blood, flesh, and bones of its dying prey with its claws and teeth.
The naked carnivore hunting, even from a considerable distance, was a truly awe-inspiring sight—a massive beast tearing apart its prey.
"Master...Master, what are these things?"
"...Dragons."
It took me a while to answer Ah Xue's trembling question, before I could finish, uttering two more words.
"Sub-dragons."
Dragons are a broad term. Those that can use natural forces, possess the ability to think, are enormous, and are revered by people are what people generally call dragons; but besides these, some other species that merely possess the form and ferocity of dragons, but lack intelligence, are called sub-dragons.
Sub-dragons, or jiaos, although their names suggest they are inferior, are still dragon-like creatures, belonging to the category of rare and exotic beasts. Some species can even evolve into dragons through mutation or energy accumulation. Most of the time, these beasts that become kings of the forest live alone in their own lairs, rarely encountering companions, and certainly never living in groups. Whether dragons or sub-dragons, ordinary creatures are no match for them. Even if they come in packs, they usually end up being eaten. The dog tribe is unlucky enough to live next to a sub-dragon's lair; it's truly a terrible thing.
“Nephew, I know what park this is now.”
“Of course, I know too.”
I shrugged and smiled, completely relieved of my previous tension, and even gave Ah Xue a victory sign.
“Now that we know where the problem lies, things are simple.” It
was obvious at a glance that this sub-dragon, though ferocious, lacked intelligence and any of the terrifying superpowers. It couldn't breathe high-temperature flames, nor could it use anything other than claws and sharp teeth to kill. Although its enormous body was intimidating, it was essentially just a larger beast. As long as we didn't rely on individual brute force and used our intelligence to overcome and snipe it, I believed it wouldn't be a problem.
With my lewd beasts and lewd spirits, with Ah Xue's dark magic, with Mao Yan'an's… well, let's skip him. Anyway, we have enough strength to devour this sub-dragon.
However, after the domineering sub-dragon had devoured most of the almost unrecognizable Triceratops on the ground, it suddenly roared again. Meanwhile, a different sub-dragon with a bird-like head and a bat-like body flew overhead. The two creatures exchanged hostile calls for a while, before the pterosaur, seemingly intimidated by the other's ferocity, turned and flew away.
"Incredible! Another one has appeared! How many sub-dragons are there on this island?"
I asked, astonished. Mao Yan'an beside me rubbed his eyes and murmured, "Indeed incredible. These aren't ordinary sub-dragons; these… are native species."
"Native species? What does that mean?"
Mao Yan'an explained slowly, not quickly, because he himself seemed confused.
Simply put, like all living things on Earth, the dragons that exist today evolved gradually. They weren't intelligent from the start, nor did they breathe fire or spit poison from the beginning. According to the research of the clergy, long before humans and elves appeared on Earth, in a distant era known as the "Jurassic," the creator god first created the enormous beasts we see today. These beasts gradually evolved into the dragons and sub-dragons we know today.
"So, those strong and powerful dragons now are the descendants of these clumsy creatures?"
"Don't look so amused. These native species have been extinct for at least tens of millions of years. Their appearance here is a miracle. To you, they may just be large wild beasts, but if..."
If they were put on the market, these things would be highly sought after. And if there were a way to sell these native species to magic scholars specializing in this field, it would be an incredibly lucrative business. Because obtaining these native species would allow for new variations in the various summoned beasts we see today. Whether it's black magic or southern beast magic, they would be overjoyed to have these rare living fossils.
"That thing down there, is it called... a Triceratops? I remember last year at the Goldfinch Federation auction, there was an incomplete Triceratops fossil that attracted bidding from several factions, and it was snapped up by the Ishtar merchant for 80,000 gold coins." "
80,000 gold coins? What was that fossil made of? Gold? Or cocaine?"
That's equivalent to 800 million copper coins! Even if you turned the entire fossil into an equivalent amount of high-priced drugs, you couldn't get that price. When I sold all the prisoners of the Martinres Fortress, regardless of age or gender, into slavery, I only got 30,000 gold coins. If an incomplete fossil can fetch such a price, then a mangled corpse...
as the Tracker's first discovery, could make us a fortune. This is truly a very promising profession."
"By the way, the creature that bit the Triceratops like that is called a Tyrannosaurus Rex, also known as a tyrannosaurus rex. The books say it's one of the most ferocious and deadliest early primitive species. If we can get our hands on it, the price will likely be far higher than that of a Triceratops. And that pterosaur that flew away earlier, although it's difficult to deal with in the air, if we can track it to its nest, there are... lots of eggs inside."
I never knew Mao Yan'an was so knowledgeable about paleontology, but his words were indeed very appealing, especially since we were going to fight these primitive dragons head-on. It might be dangerous, but hiding our heads and acting as a despicable thief to steal a few dragon eggs shouldn't be a problem, right?
Ah Xue seemed to be instinctively afraid because she was a small animal encountering a large beast. She had once bravely fought guerrilla warfare against the beastmen in the Southern Barbarians, but now her face was very pale. However, when I insisted on going down to collect the spoils, she still resolutely wanted to come with me, which made me quite gratified.
"Ah Xue, did the undead give you any hints or warnings?"
"No, the undead have been very calm throughout our climb, offering no warnings."
"You're already a very skilled necromancer. If there were real danger, the undead they inhabit wouldn't be unresponsive. Since you haven't received any warning signals, I think there's nothing to worry about."
Reassuring Ah Xue, the three of us started looking for a path downhill. Violet, like a leopard, took the lead, even charging ahead of us, actively trying to overtake the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
We all slowed down, preparing for a fierce battle. To ensure victory, I hoped to gain the upper hand with a sneak attack, but unexpectedly, the Tyrannosaurus Rex suddenly roared and turned to run.
I found it strange, but seeing Violet, who was running ahead, suddenly collapse, and Ah Xue also crouching on the ground covering her ears, I realized that some kind of extremely high-frequency sound wave must be being emitted, audible only to animals, which explained the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Ah Xue's reactions.
"Ah Xue, we can't let that thing get away! It's tons of gold! Gold!"
I urged Ah Xue to run, disregarding everything else. Only with Ah Xue by my side could I confidently use tactics to deal with the Tyrannosaurus Rex. If I were alone, my only strategy would be to flee, or to feed Mao Yan'an and Violet to the dragon and see if the stupid thing would collapse from an upset stomach.
We rushed down the mountain like horses, chasing after the Tyrannosaurus Rex's trail. The massive fallen trees on either side served as our guide. When we passed the carcass of the Triceratops, Mao Yan'an seemed to regretfully want to stay, but Ah Xue pulled him along, and he involuntarily ran with us.
"No! Put me down! Put me down! I don't want tons of gold! This pile of bones worth 80,000 gold coins, just give me a finger!"
Mao Yan'an's screams were truly heart-wrenching, but I wasn't going to give him the chance to reap the benefits alone. Besides, if we left him here alone, what dangers might he encounter? That's one thing, but if we were in danger, wouldn't it be very inconvenient to be without this large, emergency bait?
The three of them and the leopard ran wildly across the island. Along the way, they saw some strange, giant plants, shellfish, and insects, as well as other primitive dragons. Among them was a creature that looked like an ostrich and ran incredibly fast, said to be called a velociraptor. Two or three of them moved together, getting ahead of us and disappearing into the depths of the forest in an instant.
(How strange! This doesn't seem like a place with only one or two, or even just one or two, primitive dragons. If there were dozens of species, it wouldn't be surprising. But if this is the case, then things are strange!
What I find odd is that these primitive dragons are enormous, and their appetites must be incredible. This explains why modern dragons and sub-dragons often live solitary lives, without groups. But where do all these species and numbers of primitive dragons we see get enough food? This small island alone could never support such a vast ecosystem.
Since crossing that mountain, this island seems to hold many mysteries, as if more and more secrets are beckoning us to unravel them. As we followed those primitive dragons into the forest, a strange feeling I couldn't explain arose. The trees weren't dense; sunlight easily filtered through the large, coarse leaves, yet we felt the surrounding scenery growing increasingly dark, as if shrouded in something.
I don't know how long we ran, but we encountered...) So many strange creatures... Just when we were about to succumb to exhaustion, suddenly our vision cleared, and not a single tree obstructed our view.
As I mentioned before, the island wasn't large, and after our rapid run, we quickly reached the shore. Standing on the cliff, looking down at the vast expanse of blue water, the sheer scale of the towering waves crashing against the shore was truly awe-inspiring. The
unpredictable climate and geography of the East China Sea were beyond our expectations; we had already taken note of this, although the storms outside the island were still ongoing... Continuing, the weather on the island seemed quite good, and from our perspective, the area within half a mile of the island was sunny and clear. However, once we left that area, the waves became incredibly turbulent, and lightning flashed across the sky, plunging us into the most dangerous and violent storm.
How could normal astronomical and geographical phenomena be like this? The relentless and inexhaustible storm itself was strange; some force must be at work, causing this anomaly. And if this force didn't stop, we would never be able to brave the raging storm with our bare hands.
"Damn it, that international traitor is spouting complete nonsense, saying that helping us build a ship would get us to sea. Going to sea in this situation is a sure death sentence!"
I angrily kicked down, sending dirt and rocks flying in frustration. Glancing to my side, I saw Mao Yan'an's expression was grave; he was clearly worried about the severity of the situation. But as the atmosphere grew increasingly tense, Violet, lying at the back, suddenly cried out.
The leopard howled, but I ignored it, preoccupied with my own anxieties. However, Ah Xue, its owner, seemed to understand her pet's language, reminding me of the original purpose of my visit.
"Right, we came here chasing those dragons, where did all those primitive species go?"
A sudden realization dawned on me, but I couldn't come up with an answer. We'd chased them all this way, and now the land was over. Where had all those primitive dragons gone? The island wasn't that big, and we'd been keeping a close watch on them the whole way. How could those primitive dragons, always right in front of us, suddenly disappear?
A roar drew our attention again. While the three of us were stuck in a mental rut because of the environmental issues, this beast, driven purely by instinct, kept noticing the places we'd overlooked.
Following Violet's gaze, we saw a flat area on the shore. At first glance, it seemed unremarkable, but upon closer inspection, the colors were strange. The flowing seawater was a different color from the surrounding area, and it looked as if some kind of light source was emanating from beneath the surface.
(This scene…could it be?
I thought of a possibility, so I took the lead and went down the cliff. It wasn't easy, but with the help of our equipment, we managed to land on the shore after a while, our bodies soaked through with seawater.
Unlike the encounter with the primordial dragon, this time, as soon as we approached that strange sea area, Xue said that the undead horde was stirring and giving her a dangerous warning.
"Sure enough. Uncle, look at this glowing sea area. How big do you think it is?"
"How big? This small piece…at most only a ping (a unit of area measurement), a ping…huh?"
Mao Yan'an and I both showed joy in our eyes, and we both thought of the rumor that Shaye had mentioned last night, the sea god's palace hidden beneath the ping of coastline.
"Master, the undead are really warning us, it's really dangerous…"
"Nephew, what do you say?"
"Ha, do I even need to say it? I already said it: if you're afraid of danger, don't be a tracker. Go home and take out the trash or mop the floor."
Intending to boost morale, I laughed heartily, gave Ah Xue's plump, round bottom a good slap, and declared loudly, "The brave are fearless! Let's storm the Sea God's Palace! Let's go!"
Amidst my hearty laughter, I suddenly kicked Mao Yan'an, who was clapping beside me, into the sea. After a while, confirming he hadn't surfaced and that there was indeed something mysterious beneath the surface, I grabbed Ah Xue's slender waist, ready to jump into the sea with her.
"Master, wait! I learned something before. In times like this, you have to say a mysterious incantation before jumping in for safety."
"Oh? What incantation?"
"You jump, I jump."
