Her in my life

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-23
I had a vague, youthful crush on a female classmate from middle school. I visited her at her university, but I was short on money and transportation was inconvenient. Before we could even exchange letters, she was already being pursued by a wealthy and handsome classmate studying in the provincial capital. As I've mentioned in previous posts, this is a typical scenario for rural high school classmates: after graduation, we went our separate ways and didn't see each other for years, only hearing her name from family or occasional acquaintances when we returned to our hometown.
As mentioned in my previous post, we met again this year during Chinese New Year and spent a few hours alone together before politely parting ways. Perhaps that meeting sowed the seeds for what would happen later.
Back in the city where I work, everything is as usual. The only change is that I talk a little more in the classmates' QQ and WeChat groups. Sometimes after I speak in the group, she'll chat with me privately for a few minutes, but not much. Sometimes when male classmates make slightly risqué jokes, I'll join in, and she'll say things like, "Look how shy you were back then, now you're all frivolous." She sometimes posts photos of her travels on QQ or WeChat, and I'll like them when I see them. Anyway, things continue in this uneventful way.
I don't know why, but every woman who has passed through my life leaves a mark on me. For example, my ex-wife left me with the habit of eating Alpenliebe candies. Strictly speaking, this classmate can't be considered a woman I've been with, but perhaps the naive influence of my youth is more profound. The mark she left is still there to this day. Because of her name, I've had a particular fondness for a certain flower for many years. Over the years, I've taken many photos of this flower while hiking and taking pictures, and I'll occasionally send her one or two when chatting with her. This year, during a hike, I found a new one I'd never seen before, in full bloom. As usual, I took some photos that I thought were pretty good, and also broke my environmental principles by secretly picking the flower. Later, when chatting with her, I sent her a photo of the flower and joked, "I came from the mountains, bringing back you in bloom." She replied with a shy emoji.
A while ago, I had to go on a business trip to my hometown, the provincial capital. Before leaving, I mentioned in our classmates' group chat that I'd be back for a few days and asked if anyone was free to treat me to a meal. She said she'd treat me to a meal and asked if I could give her the flower, which I naturally agreed to. She picked me up from the airport on the day I arrived, gave her the flower, and we had lunch together. Then I went straight to my work unit to take care of some business. She sent me a message thanking me for the flower and saying we could get together again after I finished my work.
A few days later, after finishing work, I arranged to meet her. She picked me up in her car in the morning, and we went to the riverside. The area was mostly schools, a lovely setting nestled against the mountains and beside the water. We strolled and chatted; it was quite cool even though it was early autumn, perfect for a leisurely walk. We talked about how I used to walk like this when I visited her at her school years ago, lamenting how we've all gotten older. Before we knew it, we were holding hands, doing something I'd always wanted to do but never got around to.
Around noon, she got a little tired, so we went back to the hotel, ate a little something, and then I told her to go to her room to rest. And then… everything felt so natural. She was well-preserved, and I acted the same way I do with any other woman. With both psychological and physical satisfaction, we had a wonderful afternoon.
She didn't see me off when I left, but sent a text message: "Have a safe trip, let me know when you come back." Yes, we're on different paths now. If we can linger a little longer when our paths intersect, that's a rare and precious opportunity in life.
