Chapter 1
Around two or three in the afternoon, snowflakes began to fall from the overcast sky.
Zhou Wanyue leaned against her desk, her feet on the windowsill, her hands behind her head, gazing out the window, lost
in thought for quite some time.
A few soft knocks on the door startled her. She quickly turned back to sit up and said, "Come in."
Mary, the company secretary, poked her head in and asked, "You haven't gone home yet? Many people have already left.
" Wanyue said, "I'm leaving soon.
" Mary looked Wanyue up and down, smiling, and asked, "Do you have a date tonight
?" Wanyue said, "No, just going to a party.
" Mary asked again, "Where are you going on vacation
?" Wanyue said, "I haven't decided yet. What about you
?" Mary said, "I'm going to my hometown in Kentucky to see my parents and a bunch of cousins."
Mary had never had a good word to say about her hometown and hadn't been back for several years, but she had recently broken up with her
boyfriend and was heartbroken. This trip was probably to go back home to heal her wounds.
Wanyue wasn't in the mood for further small talk and said, "Then I wish you a good time.
" Mary replied, "I will. You too."
As soon as Mary left, Wanyue finished work.
When she reached the street, a thin layer of snow had already accumulated on the ground. Wanyue took a deep breath and carefully
walked towards the subway station.
Copley's Quarter was bustling with activity before Christmas, with people coming and going, and the bare
trees on both sides adorned with colorful lights. As Wanyue walked down the street, people kept wishing her a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
which she responded with a smile, adding, "You too."
Before going to work that morning, she had carefully dressed up. Black leather boots, black stockings, a black short skirt
, and a dark red wool coat; her long, wavy hair cascaded over her shoulders, making her walk graceful and alluring. She had originally planned to go to a bar after
work , hoping to hook up with a handsome guy. But as the day went by, her mood grew increasingly low,
so she decided to just go home. The party and all that was just a way to fool Mary.
Wanyue's husband, Dajie, would come from China every holiday, or she would go to him, but this time he said he
had a project and couldn't leave. Wanyue knew what was going on.
Three years ago, Dajie wanted to return to China to develop his career, and they had agreed to each have short-term partners. Their relationship
was very good ; neither thought the other would leave them, and they were both open-minded, believing that as long as the feelings were clear, physical infidelity
was acceptable to both. They sometimes even shared their experiences without feeling anything was wrong.
But this time, that girl managed to hold Dajie's hand on Christmas, which made things serious. Her confidence in Dajie
waned, and all sorts of thoughts started to surface. Wanyue was troubled and didn't know what to do.
Chapter Two:
Back home, Wanyue poured herself a glass of wine and then turned on her computer.
Wanyue had been a moderator on a forum of a Chinese website in North America for many years. Like an ironclad camp with ever-changing
soldiers, people come and go in the brothel. Most of the old aliases disappear and never return, or they simply change into new ones and
continue their antics like rebirth. A few old aliases have remained with Wanyue; they've met privately and
are essentially friends in real life.
Wanyue sometimes feels she's too much of a veteran in the brothel, but she's truly reluctant to leave. Firstly,
because of her friends, and secondly, because there are always interesting new aliases appearing. Wanyue is very sensitive to words
and believes that writing reflects the person; behind many interesting words often lies an interesting mind.
Compared to people in real life, these people, because they wear aliases and hide their identities, have fewer scruples, and their opinions and thoughts are more
easily expressed directly, sometimes making communication more interesting.
Of course, there are also many despicable and lewd individuals who act with impunity because of their aliases, and some fanatics
who are a real headache to talk to. Over time, Wanyue could easily guess the personality of a particular online alias with just a few words.
She'd be enthusiastic with those she was interested in, and politely respond to those she was
n't, or simply ignore them. Wanyue used different aliases on several forums, each with
a distinct , so virtually no one knew they were the same person. One of her aliases, "Heavenly Maiden of the Martial World," was a household name on that
website, boasting a large blog traffic and numerous followers.
She logged into her account and found a pile of new emails. During holidays, Wanyue always received many greetings.
Xiaomu sent her a short story he had written. Wanyue read it, liked it very much, and shared it on her
blog . Xiaomu was a sculptor she met online, based in Europe. Wanyue didn't know much about his sculptures, but
his amateur stories were imaginative and profound, revealing his talent at a glance. Due to the time
difference , he wasn't often on the forum, but he and Wanyue corresponded frequently privately. She doted on him, and he admired her greatly;
they had a very good relationship, and her blog even had a section dedicated to collecting his articles.
Jiu Guniang sent a private message, asking if she had any Christmas plans and
inviting her to her home if she didn't. Jiu Guniang, whose real name is Wu Lei, joined the forum about half a year ago and is a die-hard fan.
She likes to write novels in the style of "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio," which have a kind of elfin, ghostly quality and a very unique flavor. Her usual
posts are in the style of "Those Things of the Ming Dynasty," witty and interesting, showing her to be a very lively and lovely girl.
Wanyue knew that she was a part-time French teacher at a university in Morris, Minnesota, and that her husband was someone she met during her undergraduate years.
Jiu Guniang had posted her own photo in the group; she was wearing sportswear, had short hair, and
looked quite pleasing to the eye.
Wanyue didn't want to reply to Jiu Guniang's private message for the time being, so she put it aside.
After briefly replying to the Christmas greetings from a few other users she knew but wasn't familiar with, Wanyue
browsed the group she had created. The two male users had been arguing for two days and showed no signs of stopping. Although what they were talking about
seemed unrelated to her, their words were full of jealousy and rivalry.
These two male aliases were a friend of Wanyue's from the internet, whom she had invited,
and a troublemaker in the group who admired her and had applied to join. Wanyue and the others discussed it and agreed on
some rules before Wanyue joined.
The two had different styles and interests, and didn't usually interact much in the group. When they argued, Wanyue usually won and
rarely lost. Initially, Wanyue didn't pay much attention to their argument in the group.
Usually, others would intervene and the argument would blow over, since it's not good to openly
sever ties in the group. But this time, the two seemed determined to defeat the other, and Wanyue was in a bad mood today.
Okay, she threatened to kick them out if they didn't stop.
Annoyed, Wanyue opened Messenger to see who she could chat with. Jiu Guniang came online and
saw Wanyue online, so she came to chat. She was still very enthusiastic, saying she was having a party at her house on Christmas Eve, and that
several Chinese people in the neighborhood were fans of a certain goddess, and that her baby was three months old, etc. Wanyue said she'd think about it later
.
Wanyue wouldn't normally consider an invitation like Jiu Guniang's; what was the point of going to an online friend's house for no reason,
especially since they weren't that close? But this time, who knew? She'd leave herself an out.
While they were chatting sporadically, she saw the lewd guy come online and asked if she was in a bad mood. This male pseudonym
had come to the forum with a pseudonym called Gentle Little Wild Girl.
She had looked up the two of them; they had known each other on a pornographic forum before. The alias "Vulgar Spoiler"
was quite vulgar, but his posts had a certain elegance, a refined taste amidst his flirtatious and suggestive language. Wanyue found him amusing
. After joining the forum, he only exchanged messages with "Little Barbarian," their relationship quite affectionate. Some female aliases even became her fans,
secretly jealous of her. Later, he gradually moved to other forums, chatting, joking, and swearing, quite
carefree .
After "Little Barbarian" arrived, she stirred up Wanyue's forum, sweeping away its previous gloom, and then
fawned over her . Wanyue admired "Little Barbarian's" writing—its lively style, ornate language, and vibrant spirit—
and her personality was similar to her own in her younger days, so she felt a sense of closeness. She introduced "Vulgar Spoiler" to a group, saying she completely trusted him,
and Wanyue readily obliged.
Later, Wanyue and "Vulgar Spoiler" added each other on Messenger and chatted online occasionally.
They weren't close, but both were clearly interested in each other. Wanyue felt that Peizi was a rather detached and unassuming person,
and there was no pressure chatting with him. She also felt that he was very composed and trustworthy, so she often told him about
online gossip and things about herself. Peizi always seemed very interested and surprised, which made Wanyue feel
a great sense of accomplishment.
He didn't pry too much, and his replies were always very tactful; in short, chatting with him was very comfortable. However,
Wanyue always felt that he was a bit of a wild girl, and she couldn't be too forward with him. Otherwise, teasing him a little might be quite fun.
Recently, he posted a poem in the literary world, without explicitly mentioning her, but Wanyue felt that it was clearly written for her
. She liked his descriptions and metaphors of herself and forwarded it to her blog without asking. Their chats
continued as usual, and neither of them mentioned the poem, but they both felt a sense of mutual understanding and kindred spirits.
Wanyue asked Peizi why he hadn't visited her forum as often since. Peizi said he had no interest in the activities organized by Xiaomannv and her group of fellow
writers , such as writing essays on tonal patterns and rhyme schemes, and his passion for literature had gradually faded.
Peizi didn't talk much about his real life; Wanyue only knew he taught at a university, a science and engineering
guy. She understood that.
Peizi immediately asked if she was in a bad mood, a sensitivity that surprised Wanyue. She replied,
"I'm fine. It's just that these two grown men are getting more and more out of control." Peizi said, "They're not wrong.
" Wanyue said, "Then whose fault is it? Is it mine
?" Peizi said, "Yes, who else could it be but you? Who told you to be so charming?
" Wanyue couldn't help but chuckle. She had heard similar compliments many times, but hearing them now made her
feel much better. She returned a wide smiley face, indicating she accepted it.
Peizi then asked what her Christmas plans were.
Wanyue looked downcast and said, "I don't have any plans yet." Peizi seemed to be trying to make conversation, then said, "Why don't you drive off
to some unknown place and wander around for a few days? Maybe you'll find something surprising.
" Wanyue thought for a moment and said, "That's a good idea, but I'm too lazy to go through the hassle. A friend online invited me to her place, and I'm
hesitating.
" Peizi asked, "Are you close
?" Wanyue said, "We're quite familiar online,
but we've never met in person." Peizi said, "Personally, I don't do things like meeting online friends, but I know you two are close online
and have met privately. Since that's the case, why not go and see her
?" Wanyue said, "We'll see."
Peizi's words made Wanyue start to seriously consider Jiu Guniang's suggestion. She didn't want to be alone and miserable in Boston
.
Jiu Guniang's home was in Morris, which she had looked up—a godforsaken place. But she didn't
care about ; Jiu Guniang was very hospitable but not annoying. Going to Morris would provide some peace and quiet without being too lonely.
Once the decision was made, I immediately sent a private message to Ninth Sister, saying, "Okay, if there are plane tickets, I'll prepare to go." After
receiving Ninth Sister's reply, I booked a flight for the next day to St. Cloud; there were still
seats available, a bit expensive, but tolerable. Next, I booked a car rental, which was quickly settled. Then I packed my suitcase.
Back in Morris, during dinner, Wu Lei told her husband, Zheng Jiaming, that Tiannv was coming to visit for Christmas.
Jiaming raised an eyebrow, said "Oh," and said, seemingly unconcerned.
Wu Lei asked, "Do you know who Tiannv is
?" Jiaming paused, then said, "Isn't she just that famous pseudonym on your website? You know I
often browse your website; I'm not completely clueless.
" Wu Lei said, "Tiannv is a universally acknowledged beauty; you can't let her seduce you.
" Jiaming laughed, "Meeting online friends is risky; the chances of it being a disaster are high. But I've seen her blog and a few
photos; she's really quite nice."
Wu Lei said, "Look, look, you're already praising her before we've even met! But she really is amazing; she
writes excellent poetry and prose, is beautiful, and has a friendly personality. I don't mind if you become a fan. Oh, her real name is Zhou
Wanyue .
" Jia Ming said, "I won't interfere with your online meeting."
