Chapter 1:
The room is dark and the twilight is hard to bear; the walls are high and spring is nowhere to be seen.
Days and months slip by, time flies. Today is my release day. September 4th, around 10 a.m., I
said goodbye to my cellmates with whom I had lived for nearly three years. Many of them were
happy , but a few were very reluctant
to part, including "Old Blowhead." Several cellmates I was close to also slipped messages and contact numbers meant for their families into my pocket, urging me
to deliver them after I got out.

I stood at the gate of Pingba Prison in Guizhou, carrying my luggage, looking out at the vast expanse without seeing a single person.

Carrying my luggage and backpack, I walked along the narrow road connecting Pingba Prison to the main road of the Guihuang Highway, about a kilometer away, to wait for the bus to Guiyang that would pass through here around noon. I hadn't yet decided whether to go back to my hometown in Shandong or return to the company where I had worked for over three years. A dozen minutes later, I arrived at the main road of the Guihuang Highway and found the bus stop. Because of its remote location , few villagers from the surrounding area usually come here to catch the bus, so I was the only one there. I put my luggage . I took out the Citizen automatic mechanical watch I had worn before entering the prison from my backpack. The hands were still ticking! This watch was a wedding , and it seemed to be of good quality. It was just past 11 a.m., so the shuttle bus wouldn't arrive until I wasn't in a hurry, though, because I wanted to use this hour to reflect on my thoughts and sort out my current chaotic mind. Actually, I've always felt that what happened three years ago was very strange; the coincidences were too numerous. At first, I didn't suspect anything, but after spending time in prison with a bunch of cunning conspirators and criminal experts, my mind started to click. I realized that what happened that day wasn't simple, but I couldn't . Then later, "Old Talker" was put in our cell, and after becoming familiar with him like a wise old man, I told him my story in detail and asked him to analyze it. He immediately concluded that I had been framed. As for the motives of the person who framed me, that can only be investigated after I'm released. Time is the nemesis of all conspiracies, and nearly three years is enough time for everything to come to light. Yes, this time I must go back to my old workplace and get to the bottom of this. The reason it was hidden deep in the mountains of Southwest China was because of the strategic relocation undertaken during the Sino-Soviet split to avoid losing all industrial capacity in a nuclear
attack —the so-called "Three Lines Construction.
" When he said, "We are the 'sword forgers' of the Republic," I felt a surge of excitement. The sacred and
significant work naturally filled me with immense pride.
Unexpectedly, at this moment, Deputy Director Chu changed the subject, saying, "As I just mentioned, due to
the needs of the Third Line construction, some of our factories are located in remote areas with poor living conditions. I'd like to ask everyone, for the safety of
the Republic and to prevent our motherland from being blackmailed by nuclear weapons, are you willing to work

Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, majoring in mechanical engineering, just like me. His arrival at the Aerospace Base 601

Indeed, it was a place of magnificent mountains and beautiful waters. People say "Guilin 's
scenery is the best under heaven," but I don't think so. Some places in Guizhou are just as beautiful.
After driving for half an hour, seeing fewer and fewer vehicles on the road and the road conditions becoming increasingly rugged, we were going deeper and
deeper into the mountains. A little anxious, I asked the driver, "
How far is Ziyun from Guiyang? Why haven't we arrived yet?"

Looking at the scene before me, I felt invigorated. It seemed this place wasn't as bad as I had imagined; it gave off a
positive and inspiring vibe.
Without further ado, Yu Lezheng and I followed the driver's directions to the personnel office on the third floor to report for duty. They told
us to come back tomorrow for work assignments. A staff member from the personnel office then led us to the general affairs office to arrange
our accommodations: room 417 on the fourth floor of the single dormitory building.
"Are we sharing a room? Can't we each have our own?" Yu Lezheng
asked in his not-so-authentic Beijing accent.
"No, rooms are very scarce. Having a room at all is already a blessing," the woman in the general affairs office said coldly
. Seeing the older woman's attitude sent a chill down my spine. I had a vague feeling that they weren't
very welcoming to us newly assigned college graduates. Even the driver who picked us up and the
people from the personnel department seemed indifferent, their attitude much worse than the personnel at headquarters. I really didn't know
what was going on.
Yu Le and I each took our room keys and followed the older woman to see the rooms. It turned out the factory area and the dormitory area
were separate, quite far apart. Even within the factory area, each workshop wasn't in a separate valley; almost every
workshop occupied its own valley. We drove for over a kilometer along the winding mountain road before reaching
the single dormitory building.
It was a very old four-story building, looking at least a decade old. Many window
frames were peeling, and some were even cracked. We carried our large bags of luggage up to our fourth-floor room.
The corridor was cluttered with all sorts of miscellaneous items, almost blocking the way. The living conditions seemed poor.
A lady from the general affairs office opened the door for us, checked us over, and then went downstairs. Before leaving,
she told us we could eat at the staff canteen in the northwest corner of the dormitory area's central square. Yu Le and I
were left there staring at each other.
It was a room of about 30 square meters. To the left of the entrance was a small bathroom. There
was a single bed and a wardrobe against the east and west walls respectively, and two desks facing each other under the south-facing window.
"It's alright, much better than our school dorms, right?" Yu Le
said cheerfully after looking around the room. He was definitely an optimist.
"Yeah, better than our school dorms too. Our dorms were crammed with four people, and there wasn't even a bathroom. We had to
use the communal washroom in the corridor to wash up," I chimed in. What's done is done.
We cleaned the room, made our beds, packed our luggage, hung our clothes in the wardrobes, and
put on the desks. By the time we finished, it was almost six o'clock.
"Meng Chengbao, let's go to the cafeteria for lunch and take a walk around the dormitory area to get familiar with the surroundings," Yu Le said,
sitting on his bed.
"Okay, I need to buy all my bedding first. I don't even have a pillow, how am I going to sleep tonight?" I
replied .
So we went down from the single dormitory building, ate at the cafeteria, and then strolled around the entire dormitory area
. We learned that the dormitory area we were in was the old one, with more than twenty five- or six-story dormitory
buildings. We heard that there was a newly built dormitory area in the valley to the west, where some of the less senior employees had been allocated housing.
It seems that this factory has quite a few employees; the two dormitory areas, including their families, probably number in the thousands.
Our old dormitory area was, of course, the most bustling. The area around the central square was filled with shops, mobile
communication service centers, supermarkets, restaurants, barbershops, and even a small savings branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
It was practically a small town. Yu Le and I bought all our daily necessities and bedding at the supermarket
and then carried a huge pile of items back to the dormitory.
After washing up, I went to bed early. I'd been traveling for two whole days and hadn't had a proper rest
. Finally settled in, I felt much more at ease and needed a good night's sleep. Yu Lezheng, on the other hand, was full of energy
, even pulling out his laptop and engrossed in reading it. I was too tired
to pay him any attention, and soon my head hit the pillow before I drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, I was awakened by a loud reveille outside my window. Listening closely, I realized it was the dormitory
's loudspeaker broadcasting the morning and evening routine, followed by a news program from the Central People's Broadcasting Station. With the loudspeaker
so loud, how could I possibly sleep? A little annoyed, I grabbed my phone and checked the time—it was only 6:30 AM.
"Military enterprises are really something else," Yu
Lezheng remarked, lying on his bed, also awakened by the noise. This guy was truly an optimist; he could

"Okay, let's get up and go for a walk." I couldn't wait to get dressed and go to the small
bathroom to wash up.
Just as Yu Lezheng said, as soon as we stepped out of the dormitory area, we saw a

huge parking lot, which held about twenty various transport vehicles,

several workshops with signs for auto repair shops.
Looking at the rows of cars, I wondered, "This is clearly a transport fleet.
What can a mechanical engineering student like me do here
?" My worries weren't unfounded. Sure enough, I was assigned to the auto repair shop as a technician. This
had absolutely nothing to do with my major, and I had never studied car repair. This was completely

Our shared experiences and the fact that we lived and ate in the same dormitory every day gradually made Yu Le and I
close friends. He was a good person in every way except for being a bit too lecherous. Every night, he would comment
on the pretty girls and wives in their workshop. He
