Chapter 5: Conflict
For the first two days after arriving, the teacher's questions were almost all aimed at Ya'ou, such as explaining Coulomb's law
, listing the similarities between mitochondria and chloroplasts, and so on. The boy, after all, had always been a top
student, so he dealt with these small questions easily.
To Ya'ou's surprise, the beautiful homeroom teacher was actually a math teacher. But upon closer reflection, it made perfect sense;
it seemed that years of being accompanied by the dry and boring subject of mathematics had created her beautiful yet cold face. Bai
Siqi specifically chose a proof of a decreasing function and asked Ya'ou to solve it at the podium.
While most students were racking their brains, biting their pens, the boy solved it perfectly in no time. His method was simple and clear, and his steps were well-organized, which
made her smile and show a rare hint of appreciation.
The only embarrassing moment was in English class. It was said that the male teacher, who had returned from studying abroad, lectured on grammar. Ya'ou was completely
confused, and when asked to analyze the sentence structure, he stammered for a long time without being able to explain it clearly. However, this was not a bad thing,
at least it made the top students in the class breathe a sigh of relief.
Class 9, like other classes in the South Building, enrolled wealthy children who had no worries about food and clothing. Their parents were either
ministers, senators, judges, or CEOs or senior executives of listed companies. Although they did not rely particularly on
scholarships, the competition was no less fierce than in the North Building. The teenagers, having grown up surrounded by
the manners and fashions of high society, were polite in their speech and behavior, yet also exuded an air of superiority. Most of them
were preoccupied with their own affairs and not particularly curious about Ya'ou, their new classmate from the countryside.
During breaks, a few particularly outgoing boys would surround him, bombarding him with questions. Ya'ou, seemingly
afraid to offend anyone, appeared timid and submissive, especially when discussing games, anime, and TV dramas, which
he knew nothing about. This only made the boys lose interest, and their attitudes became more dismissive, merely offering their opinions before
dispersing.
Fortunately, Ya'ou was used to being ignored from a young age, so he didn't mind too much. In fact, he somewhat enjoyed
this atmosphere at Aurora University, as he could be as invisible as an invisible person, avoiding unexpected attention that would make him feel
awkward.
The only thing that made Ya'ou a little embarrassed was that he didn't have a school uniform. At noon, he took Teacher Bai's note to the general affairs office to have his measurements taken,
but he didn't know when it would be ready. His casual clothes made him stand out on campus, and he was
stopped and questioned several times by teachers on duty wearing armbands, each time having to patiently explain himself.
From 6:00 to 8:30, it was evening self-study time. He did a science practice test; after neglecting it for over ten days, his performance was surprisingly good.
After class, some classmates invited him to go for a run, but Ya'ou politely declined. He then took out the reading workbook he'd bought at the bookstore the day before
and did two more exercises. Seeing that almost everyone had left, he finally stood up and went back to his dormitory.
Passing the brightly lit library, Ya'ou's heart suddenly tightened. Were all those guys from his class hiding here
studying? He relaxed when he entered the living area, witnessing firsthand the nightlife of a big city school—
far more vibrant than Rongcheng High School.
Some people were skateboarding happily on the roadside, others were frantically memorizing words under the lights, and
a large group of female teachers were dancing to music on the playground. That was the recently popular hit song "Lotus
Pond in the Moonlight," which had been playing everywhere. This afternoon, their Chinese class was on it, and the elderly gentleman with graying temples even sang it in class
—it was quite amusing.
Pushing open the dormitory door, he found it pitch black inside. He flicked on the light, only to be met with a blindingly pale light.
The dormitory had free Wi-Fi; the username and password were his student ID and the last six digits. After watching the news for a while,
he prepared to smoke, shower, and go to bed, only to realize his pack of Marlboros was empty.
His nicotine cravings seemed to have gotten a bit stronger lately. Frustrated, he crushed the pack, reaching out the window to throw it, but
seeing several couples strolling hand-in-hand below, he quickly retreated. Not having a cigarette felt like something was missing.
After pacing around the room for a while with his hands behind his back, he decided to go to the supermarket.
To her surprise, upon opening the door, she stumbled upon a couple locked in a passionate, serpentine kiss. The girl's clothes were wide open,
her two full, snow-white breasts being wantonly fondled by the boy—damn, a girl actually dared to enter the boys' dormitory and be so
openly affectionate? Shanghai's social atmosphere is truly open!
"Ah, someone's here, what bad luck!" The girl cursed under her breath upon seeing Ya'ou, quickly pushing the boy away and pulling
her coat to cover her chest, but her erect nipples still flashed by.
"Hehe, who told you to be so horny?" The boy, however, didn't seem to mind being caught in the act, glancing at
Ya'ou with a hint of smugness, then wrapped his arm around her, giving her buttocks a hard squeeze.
"You're the one being horny!" the girl said coquettishly, slapping his broad chest with her small fist. Still shaken, she
asked, "This room's been empty, hasn't it? Where did this idiot come from? He scared me half to death..."
Ya'ou had already walked three or four steps away, but the insults still reached his ears. Feeling extremely annoyed,
he couldn't help but turn back for a glance. The girl had a slender waist and a tall, slender figure, wearing eyeshadow and lipstick, dressed quite seductively
. The boy was burly and strong, probably around 1.8 meters tall, and looked very powerful.
Normally, Ya'ou would have just let it go, but the girl seemed used to being arrogant. Seeing him hear her, she
stood with her hands on her hips, like a compass, deliberately raising her voice to provoke him, "What are you looking at? I'm talking about you, you
idiot!"
"Keep your voice down!" the boy said, covering the girl's mouth with his hand and glaring at her fiercely. Although Ya Ou had
a fair and refined appearance, not like someone who would be aggressive, he still lived in this building and was dressed casually
. He didn't want to provoke him unless absolutely necessary.
"What are you doing?!" the girl struggled, annoyed. Seeing Ya Ou remain silent, she assumed he was a
pushover and became even more brazen. "What's wrong with me calling him an idiot?"
Enough is enough. Even if Ya Ou was utterly cowardly, he couldn't take it anymore. He had a good temper, but he wasn't...
No, if they were squeezed out in Rongcheng, would they be bullied again in Shanghai? But he still tried his best to control himself, hoping to
calmly seek justice. "Hey classmate, that's not right of you, is it?"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" The boy saw Ya'ou return with an extremely ugly expression and couldn't help but groan
inwardly. He quickly said, "Girls are just being unreasonable, don't bother with her!"
"Why are you pulling me? Who's being unreasonable!" The girl didn't expect the boy who used to be so willing to risk his life for her to back down. She
suddenly shook off his hand, and a reason came to mind. Pointing at Ya'ou's nose, she shouted,
"Hmph, hiding in the room and peeping, who do you think you are, daring to say I'm wrong?!"
"How come I always run into idiots like this no matter where I go?" Knowing that she was being unreasonable, Ya'ou became even
more composed. One sentence left the girl speechless. "If you say I was peeping, you have to state the facts.
This old-fashioned dormitory door doesn't even have a peephole. Do you think I can see through things?"
"This kid's quick-witted!" The boy was stunned for a moment upon hearing this, then hurriedly pulled the girl away, chuckling awkwardly as he advised,
"Alright, stop fooling around. Aren't you embarrassed enough? Hurry up and apologize to her." Perhaps he used too much force,
and the girl was wearing high heels, she stumbled and almost twisted her ankle.
At this moment, several people in nearby rooms peeked out from the noise. The girl, her accusations failing, grew even angrier
and turned her anger towards the boy. "Li Xiaopeng, you won't help me, and you even dared to push me?! Your mother looks down on me, and
you think I'm a disgrace too? Ungrateful! Your whole family is worthless!"
"Oh, so you're taking it out on me!" Ya'ou sneered, then calmly stared at the boy,
saying with a hint of regret, "Excuse me, is this your girlfriend?"
The boy didn't answer, but his expression gradually twisted, finally hardening as he shouted at the girl, "Damn it,
can't you just shut up for a bit?!"
"So what if I don't shut up?!" The girl retorted sharply, her neck twisting,
yelling like a shrew, "Is he your father? You listen to him? You dare ask your father…"
With a sharp "slap!", the boy slapped the girl across the face,
leaving five bright red finger marks on her rather pretty face. Even Ya'ou was stunned.
"Li Xiaopeng, you bastard!" The girl covered her face, stunned for a moment, then bared her teeth and claws, ready to
fight back, but he kicked her in the stomach, sending her sprawling backward. Her
leopard-print tutu opened like an umbrella, revealing her pink, see -through lace thong underneath.
The narrow strips of fabric almost dug into her bright red flesh, and her pubic hair was especially dark and
shiny.
"Get the hell out of here, you slut!" The boy's face flushed red, and in his rage, he made a move to kick her again.
"Fine, I'll get out! Li Xiaopeng, I'm not done with you!" the girl screamed hoarsely, disregarding her shattered image
, and staggered away as she got up.
"Excuse me, classmate!" The boy, though still angry, apologized to Ya'ou promptly and politely.
"She's been a bit mentally unstable lately, please don't take offense!"
"It's alright!" Ya'ou pretended to be indifferent, then shook her head with a double meaning, "Girls
, well, not worth it..."
"Hehe, I'm Li Xiaopeng, what's your name?" The boy clearly understood and seemed worldly-wise
, immediately extending his hand.
"Oh, hello!" Ya'ou wasn't really used to this kind of etiquette, but was surprised by the boy's natural change in attitude
. "My name is Tan Ya'ou."
"Wow, a Babbury jacket, new Versace jeans - there aren't many wealthy families with the surname Tan in Shanghai, how come
I've never seen this kid before?" Li Xiaopeng looked at Ya'ou's attire, his mind racing, and then cautiously asked
, "Which class are you in?"
"Grade 11 (9) class." Ya'ou answered frankly.
"She's in Class 9 too!" Li Xiaopeng exclaimed in surprise. Seeing Ya'ou's confusion, he added, "That
girl—Su Qianyi, don't you know her?"
"Damn, is that even possible? What a small world!" Ya'ou felt nauseous, as if she'd swallowed a fly. She awkwardly
laughed, "Uh, I'm a new transfer student, we're not that close yet..."
"Oh, no wonder. She was in the hospital and only got back tonight, she hasn't even come to class yet..." Li Xiaopeng was also extremely embarrassed.
He added, "I'm so sorry about what happened earlier!"
"It's nothing, it's my fault too. I caused you all, uh..." The boy was so humble that Ya'ou didn't know how to respond
, only saying several times, "I'm sorry!"
"No, it's not your fault, she went too far!" Li Xiaopeng waved his hand, gritting his teeth.
"I still have a 'probationary period' on my record, all because of her; my mom went to visit her in the hospital, and she had a huge
fight with her, damn it! If it weren't for the fact that she just had an abortion, I would have already—sorry, excuse my rudeness!"
"No, this is between you two!" Li Xiaopeng's angry venting made Ya'ou feel much better
.
"Brother, you're an honest and smart guy!" Li Xiaopeng took the initiative to get closer to Ya'ou, and said,
"She was on the phone with a classmate on the way here just now, and heard that a transfer student came, and seems pretty good, so she might have to
wear a school uniform from now on—brother, I believe in you, study hard, and crush her arrogance!"
Only then did Ya'ou notice that Li Xiaopeng was wearing a school uniform, while the girl wasn't, but what did that have to do with wearing a school
uniform?
"Oh, you might not know the rules at Aurora University." Seeing Ya'ou's puzzled expression, Li Xiaopeng casually slipped her hands into her gray
trouser pockets and said dejectedly, "The top student in the class doesn't have to wear a uniform, gets shopping vouchers from the school supermarket, and
eats for free in the teachers' cafeteria. I even—sigh, never mind!"
"The top student in the class? What kind of world is this? Even bricks and tiles have come to life!" Although Ya'ou scoffed
, she couldn't help but admire Li Xiaopeng's cunning. If it weren't for the coincidence, she probably would have been the one to turn the tables on her.
"Hmph, their whole family is the same, framing others is their ancestral skill!" Li Xiaopeng, having guessed Ya'ou's thoughts
, said sarcastically, but his expression turned serious. "Her father is Su Dingxin of Dongrun—brother, you're in the same
class as her, so you'd better be very careful!"
"Thanks for the reminder!" Even he looked fearful, making Ya'ou's heart tremble. She desperately needed a cigarette to calm herself down
. "Excuse me, I have something to do, I'll be going now."
"Okay, we've become friends through this little misunderstanding. I live right across from you, feel free to come over anytime," Li Xiaopeng
said warmly to the boy, seemingly unconcerned about what had happened that evening.
The supermarket had a full range of tobaccos, but Ya'ou thought they were too expensive and didn't buy Marlboro, opting instead for a local Shanghai brand
, Double Happiness. Back in her dorm, she lit one, feeling completely relaxed, her mind clearing up. Thinking back to what had just happened, she couldn't help but
feel a little scared.
"That Li Xiaopeng got all my secrets in just a few words, then betrayed his girlfriend. He's not simple! I was originally
planning to fight him, but he's so magnanimous, even shaking hands and making peace with me—could it be that he's worried about the disciplinary action
and is planning to sabotage me secretly? A one-on-one fight is fine, but if it's a group fight, who will I call for help? I can't fight alone
, I'm outnumbered..."
Suddenly, a series of clattering footsteps echoed in the corridor, like four or five people running. Startled
, Ya'ou jumped up. "Damn, they've already called people to the dorm to ambush me?!"
Without even putting on her slippers, she rushed to check if the door was locked. Then she heard someone shout, "You guys
go first, I forgot my money!" She realized they were going to get takeout and couldn't help but chuckle. "Damn, they're so
paranoid!"
"What's meant to happen will happen, there's no use being afraid!" Ya'ou stubbed out her cigarette, opened her English textbook, and prepared to memorize a few
words before taking a shower and going to bed. But her phone rang; it was Zhao Ziqi calling.
"Tan Ya'ou, what are you doing?" The woman's voice was devoid of any emotion.
"Damn it, my cousin told me to call her, I forgot!" Ya'ou couldn't help but stomp her foot inwardly, her voice tinged
with guilt. "Uh, hello Ziqi! I'm reading."
"Still not asleep so late?" Zhao Ziqi's tone was calm, without any giggles, completely unlike her
usual style.
"Yeah, I'll sleep in a bit." Ya'ou was rather unaccustomed to this. "Ziqi, is something wrong?"
"Nothing much, just checking on you at school, seeing if you're adjusting well." Zhao Ziqi's concern for her
was like that of a true older sister.
"Everything's fine, nothing's bothering me." Ya'ou wanted to apologize for not calling, but the words
stuck in her throat.
"Okay, then I'm relieved. Your sister Ouni left this afternoon, you know?" Zhao Ziqi rambled on.
"I know, she sent a text message," Ya'ou replied.
"She's gone. If you need anything, just tell me, and I'll have someone bring it to you—like bed sheets and blankets, clothes,
socks and shoes, school supplies, pens, notebooks, and whatever snacks or fruits you like..." Zhao
Ziqi rambled on, almost as if she was doing it on purpose.
"No need," Ya'ou interrupted, hating to bother people. "I have everything I need, and besides, I can
buy it myself."
"Why?" Zhao Ziqi's voice suddenly rose, full of resentment as she seized the opportunity to vent, "I'm not your real sister
, and you even look down on my things?"
"I'm not looking down on them..." Ya'ou retorted instinctively.
"Then why are the tablet and laptop I gave you still at home?" Zhao Ziqi questioned, slightly annoyed.
"Uh, she's really sensitive..." Ya'ou felt guilty and patiently explained, "I was afraid the school wouldn't allow it,
but I brought my phone."
"Okay, I forgive you, let bygones be bygones - let bygones be bygones!" Zhao Ziqi deliberately emphasized her tone,
her words clearly implying something.
"Damn, I'm caught in this again!" Ya'ou instantly understood what she was implying, but didn't bring it up.
"Yeah, I know, I get what you mean."
"Then read your book, remember to get some rest early, don't stay up too late." Zhao Ziqi seemed relieved, her tone becoming
exceptionally relaxed. "If you're coming back this weekend, I'll pick you up."
"Although she's not as gentle and considerate as Sister Jing'ou, she's still an older sister!" The bar incident was left
behind, and Ya'ou also breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, I'll call you then."
"It's a deal, see you there!" Zhao Ziqi's voice became sweet again, as if she had drunk a spoonful of honey.
"Well, goodnight?"
"Sister Ziqi..." Ya'ou hesitated before calling her, then said with a determined look, "I have something else
I want to tell you."
"Hmm?" The woman was clearly taken aback. "What is it?"
