Dark Night Without Fragrance

    page views:1  Publication date:2023-03-23
The lush, verdant lawns, the neatly trimmed groves, the
boxy box-like buildings—all reminiscent of somber, gloomy gray walls—have
been repainted a pure, pristine milky white. The once

towering, sword-like chimneys piercing the clouds have been replaced by a dense network of exhaust vents surrounding
the factory

high alert, have been replaced by countless holographic cameras
secretly placed in hidden corners and highly automated access control systems.

This is the New York Laboratory, located on the shores of the Great Lakes, a project guided and built by the federal government. Hundreds of
technology companies and related laboratories have settled here, collaborating to develop and manufacture various products— some
gifts from angels, others incentives from devils.

From the outside, this federal high-tech laboratory appears close to nature, clean, and with fresh air—
resembling a medium-sized park. Although this experimental zone didn't conceal its existence, its appearance was far more appealing
than the dilapidated and menacing nuclear facilities.
Even fervent environmentalists and anti-nuclear activists rarely came to protest or stage sit-ins at the entrance of this area, representing the Federation's most advanced technological
power .

Compared to its predecessors, the security measures at the New York Experimental Zone were only stricter.

This policy of relaxed exterior but tight interior created a peaceful atmosphere for newcomers,
provided they didn't wander around or approach the important facilities.

Only those who had been inside knew just how tight the internal security was.

"Beep beep beep." Standing in a small, empty room, Andrew
stood the center, eyes fixed straight ahead, the image of a typical Federation elite soldier.

This wasn't his first time here; Andrew knew that the intermittent beeping was the sound of the scanner
running . Unbeknownst to him, countless particles had already penetrated his clothes, muscles,
senses, blood vessels, internal organs, nerves, and brain, then fed back the information to another receiving device to check
his physical condition and whether he was carrying any prohibited items. Based on this, it determined whether he was qualified
to enter the deeper levels.

Time ticked by, and finally, the green light indicating "successful passage" lit up, and the passage door slowly
opened…

With firm and rhythmic steps, Andrew walked step by step towards the entrance.

"Individual strength is insignificant; only by uniting can individual strength be limitless."

It's hard to imagine such words appearing in the supposedly free and democratic United States, but it truly exists. This
sentence, about half the size of an A4 sheet of paper, lay quietly on
the lower right corner .

His name contained a typical Italian surname;
indeed came from ancient Italy, the very land that had once created the ancient empire known as "Rome."
Before World War I, his family had already settled in America. If working as a small business owner can be considered
serving the Federation, then Antonio's family has been quietly serving the Federation for a century.

Of course, not everyone's job is the same. In the beginning, his ancestors, unfamiliar with the place and its people, could only
do backbreaking labor akin to slavery. Later, as circumstances improved, some of Rickers' ancestors became
businessmen , some became professors, and some worked quietly as waiters, cleaners, and in other
unnamed professions.

The past is no longer important; what matters is "the present"!

As someone who has always maintained friendly relations with the federal government and the intelligence agency, and as
the general manager , Antonio is currently watching the large screen intently.

A green dot is slowly moving, and beside it, lines of different colors are marking various
information, each representing houses, streets, vehicles, traffic lights, and so on.

Now, according to the GPS map, the green dot, or rather the truck represented by the green dot, is only 20 kilometers
away . In California, where traffic is relatively good, that's about
a half-hour drive, though it might take longer if there's traffic.

Undoubtedly, Antonio knows what's on that green dot; as the tester for "it,"
he certainly knows what it is. Even someone who knows nothing
would roughly understand the situation after reading the files provided by the Federal Intelligence Service.

The 21st century is called the beginning of the Information Age. By 2050, halfway through this century,
information technology will have developed to an unimaginable level, at least in terms of propaganda.
In reality, it's just faster, cheaper, and better than before.

People in the Information Age are omniscient; if you know what you're looking for, you can always find some
clues also forgetful; no matter how significant the news is presented to them,
it will be forgotten in no time.

Because all major events have warning signs, by analyzing these signs and grasping
the pulse , many things become as clear as shadows in the sunlight.

In 2014, a meteorite from outer space struck Mars. This information
was briefly mentioned in short newsletters on the websites of observatories of several major countries. Because the content was so brief, it was often overlooked.

In 2032, a space exploration team organized by the US and Europe established a forward base on Mars.

By 2035, the forward base was largely completed, and the necessary instruments and personnel were in place.

The "seed" project—"seed" meaning seed—was launched. Perhaps by chance, the forward base was located
not far from the impact crater. Or perhaps by chance, the accompanying astronauts
discovered —a lichen-like plant. It was unclear whether it was a native Martian species or
a gift from the extraterrestrial meteorite.

After careful cultivation, the lichen-like plant revived; this plant was named "sanguinem."
"Kwai," also known as "Blood Sunflower," is a plant that grows to a height of 1 meter in its fully mature form. It resembles coral in appearance and
is blood-red . While it lacks distinct branches and leaves, this plant, after a long period of development, produces
small, red, granular fruits.

These fruits are famous—or rather, the drugs made from them are
famous. Pfizer, a sponsor of Mars missions, developed a new drug after analyzing Blood Sunflower
. Its effects include relieving depression and low mood, and it is said to be quite effective. It is very popular in high society where
psychological .

Of course, Antonio knew that the Blood Sunflower's fruits had more than just these capabilities. While Pfizer
was researching Blood Sunflower, several other well-known companies were also conducting intensive experiments, each with its own results.

Among them, what interested the White House most was the Bell Labs' experimental results—the rationalization of anomalies
.

Undoubtedly, the so-called alien plant, Blood Sunflower, contains various mysterious components, some
similar to those on Earth, while others are incredibly strange. Bell Labs, through deep purification using nanotechnology,
obtained a raw material that was found to possess a terrifying property: it can directly interfere with the human brain, causing it
to accept everything that happens without reservation, and then forget it afterwards.

This property was discovered during a leak of blood sunflower extract at Bell Labs, combined with the photographic storage of a holographic
surveillance camera.

Simply put, this new information once again ignited the White House's ambitions.

And the White House's mastermind—the FBI—naturally had no choice but to handle such a situation.

As we all know, in a much earlier era, when half of the world was still
dominated era of bipolar world power struggles, in that era known as the most dangerous era of the 20th century,

the US-Soviet rivalry, the Cold War, and nuclear weapons—

these keywords shrouded the world for decades, making it feel suffocatingly oppressive.

But perhaps few people know that beneath these words, countless undercurrents were stirring.

To defeat their adversaries, both sides conducted numerous far-fetched and terrifying experiments, such as Stalin's
"ape warrior" project and Western Europe's nuclear artillery experiments with blast radius far exceeding range...

Countless plans were conceived, approved, and then most withered away.

One such plan was the hypnosis of high-ranking officials. This plan, or similar projects, were secretly conducted
by .

The general guiding principle was to use hypnosis, spells, modern technology, magic, witchcraft, and other
mystical or seemingly unfathomable methods, or those with considerable scientific basis, to control the opposing side's key
figures in order to achieve the overall destruction of the enemy.

Of course, historically, both sides failed shamefully. The so-called magic, hypnosis, or other
witchcraft ultimately failed to achieve the high-ranking officials' requirements. Thus, with the collapse of the empires in 1991, they were buried deep in
history , along with these projects, which were considered evil by ordinary people, and the experimental records of the time,
silently gathering dust in the corners of archives.

Human imagination is limited, at least in a specific era. Ancient people, when they wanted to fly,
could only imagine themselves as birds, flapping their enormous wings and soaring through the air. They couldn't imagine
themselves taking off in a cone-shaped rocket, nor could they imagine anti-gravity devices that allowed them to leave the ground directly.

The FBI Director, Mr. Khadgar, is a typical example.

After learning about the wonders of Martian plants, he decisively restarted
a project that had been abandoned in the late 20th century. Using the latest Martian plants in conjunction with modern hypnosis, he
aimed . Even the most ordinary person knows how terrifying such a plan is. It's practically
the work of a classic villain in a Hollywood blockbuster.

However, in numerous experiments, the results were consistently unsatisfactory.

To put it simply, the extract of the blood sunflower can induce the human brain to release various pheromones. These pheromones
subtly affect the brain, paralyzing its judgment and causing people
to overlook . This effect has been thoroughly proven.

However, several drawbacks must be considered. Individually, they might not seem like much, but when
combined , they become fatal.

Disadvantage 1: This substance can currently only be extracted from the fruit of the Martian plant *Hymenochaete*, and the yield is extremely low. Furthermore,
as a joint venture between the US and Europe, the European side has considerable influence, and the US cannot completely monopolize
the supply of raw materials for *Hymenochaete*.

Disadvantage 2: To use these substances to subtly stimulate the brain and promote pheromone production,
a high minimum effective concentration is required. Therefore, to reach the critical point of successful hypnosis and control, a considerable
dose is needed. Otherwise, when facing sensitive issues, such as those involving the individual's core values or moral
beliefs , the individual will exhibit significant resistance, inevitably leading to hypnosis failure.
Increasing the dose, however, leads to Disadvantage 3: When using large doses of purified substances, chemical damage to the human brain is
unavoidable causing significant harm to intelligence. Moreover, with current
technology, this process is irreversible. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that after successfully hypnotizing an individual with a large dose the first
time , a smaller dose can achieve the same
effect in subsequent attempts.

However, this means that this substance cannot be used on the scientists they want to recruit.
After all , scientists' most valuable asset is their creative minds, and using it would
be counterproductive. As for causing their intellectual decline so that others cannot utilize
them the CIA has hundreds of more effective drugs and radioactive materials to choose from, so there's no need for this
precious extract that costs millions per gram.

Disadvantage 4: It must be admitted that the scent of alien plants is incompatible with human aesthetics. This is the most fatal
, or rather, the most obvious problem. Other disadvantages are merely conceptual issues for the individuals involved.
But this is the most superficial and obvious fact concerning the sense of smell.

The effective extract of blood sunflower constantly emits a scent similar to the cheapest, lowest-quality perfume.
Or rather, that's not all. The strong odor initially smelled like perfume, but upon closer
inspection, it had a strange odor. And if ingested, the unmistakable bitter, foul smell made it impossible
to swallow. This was a significant disadvantage for the CIA, which valued secrecy.

Fortunately, the substance could be used orally, inhaled, or injected, but each method
had significant limitations. After all, the unpleasant smell and taste made it difficult to be induced. And when you can
force inject it, under normal circumstances, there's no need for hypnosis.

"Ring ring." A crisp telephone ring interrupted Antonio's thoughts, and he answered the phone.

The secretary's pleasant voice came through the low-powered line, "Hello Mr. Antonio,
Mr. Andrew, who was scheduled with you, has arrived. He's at the front desk now..."

Andrew and that "thing" had arrived. "Very good, have him come directly to my office."
His heart pounding, Antonio knew this was a sign of extreme excitement at facing such a momentous event. He
interrupted his secretary, issuing the order.

"Yes, sir, I'll bring him right away," the secretary quickly replied.

Normally, a hospitable host should go downstairs to greet a distinguished guest, but Antonio believed
the other wouldn't mind this slight inconvenience, not just because of his past
comradeship with Director Khadgar. Thinking of this, Antonio looked down and gave a wry smile. His trousers below the knees
were empty , one of the main reasons he left the FBI. Who would criticize an elderly man with mobility issues?!

Soon, the visitor appeared at his door.

In fact, when the robust Andrew entered, Antonio had noticed
the . From previous information, he knew that the purified Blood Sunflower material could only
be stored in sub-zero temperatures; once exposed to air, it would quickly lose its activity. So, looking around, only
the safe contained the purified substance. It must be incredibly cold inside; to maintain the low temperature for a short time between the lab and
the company, it should contain professional liquid nitrogen, or at the very least, a large amount of dry ice.

"This is it." Andrew held up the safe, shook it at his old friend Antonio,
and then carefully opened it.

A white gas mixed with freezing cold rushed out. Antonio didn't flinch; the white gas
was simply a product of the physical combination of ultra-low temperature and moisture in the air, non-toxic and harmless. After the white gas dissipated, an
oval-shaped piece of glass, or some other transparent material, lay quietly in the foam padding at the bottom of the box,
filled with a pinkish liquid. A large amount of residual dry ice lay there quietly, cooling this precious substance.

Looking at the alien gift, Antonio nodded. "Please tell Director Khadgar that I will
arrange for its improvement from now on, as he requested. I hope I won't disappoint him."

"Director Khadgar said he trusts you not only because you're one of the Federation's top 10 chemists, but also
because of your character." Andrew bowed slightly, watching Antonio take the safe from his hands.
He knew that as a Federation soldier, he had successfully completed this delivery mission…

"Hello, welcome, welcome!" A smiling man opened the door courteously, gesturing to
invite the distinguished guest inside.

"Hello, Mr. Li Jies." The beautiful woman outside didn't rush in, but first gave a standard
bow to pay her respects.

"Miss Koshimizu Sakura, I've heard so much about you." Li Jies returned the bow in a similar manner, speaking humbly and
politely . Then, he raised both hands, handing the woman his business card.

The business card, written in Chinese, English, and Japanese, concisely and clearly introduced the owner's
identity and exuded a faint, pleasant fragrance. Combined with the man's polite demeanor, it certainly created a favorable impression.

Li Jies, a professional angel investment fund manager, was a well-known figure in the industry.

Entering Li Jies's office, she found it impeccably tidy, with documents neatly arranged on the desk,
reflecting the owner's refined lifestyle. A ray of morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting dappled golden light.
The air conditioning was on, providing a pleasantly cool atmosphere. Everything seemed normal, a standard template for a successful businessperson's office
. For some reason, Xiao Shimizu Sakura suddenly felt a chill creep up her spine and couldn't help but
shudder.

Why was this happening? The air conditioning was just right, not too cold. Xiao Shimizu Sakura wondered to herself.
The man before her was still smiling, showing no signs of anything amiss.

So, it must just be her imagination, especially since he had been introduced by a friend and was
a person of status. Sakura Koshimizu took a deep breath to calm herself.

"Ms. Koshimizu, have you seen our offer from the day before yesterday? What are your thoughts on it?" After
both were seated, Li Jies asked directly.

Sakura Koshimizu thought for a moment, carefully choosing her words: "Well, Mr. Li, I'm very pleased that you're interested in investing in my project
. However, there are many aspects of the conditions you proposed that we may need to discuss in more detail
."

The man's smile remained warm, and he nodded. "No problem. After all, if it's just our
side proposing conditions without your feedback, then no matter how good the contract seems
, it will ultimately fail. We're investing in this project because we value your wisdom and future potential,
hoping for a long-term cooperation, not just one or two deals."

Sakura Koshimizu nodded knowingly, revealing a shallow dimple. This man's willingness to invest in
her project was probably largely due to his desire to get closer to her family.

Although she knew he had ulterior motives, she didn't dislike him that much. After all, there's no
such thing as love without a reason, and many people approach her for this reason. As a member of the family, Sakura Koshimizu
understood this principle long ago. Moreover, she was quite
satisfied with , and Sakura had a rather favorable impression of him.

At this moment, Li Jies pulled a small notebook from his drawer, seemingly intending to take notes on Sakura's words.
Seeing such earnestness, Koshimizu Sakura felt even more satisfied. No one would complain about
someone overly attentive; what they truly dislike is the motive behind that attentiveness.

Koshimizu Sakura was confident in her patent. Although the shadow of her family always loomed over her,
since she could use it, why not make the most of it to climb the ladder?

"Mr. Li, I personally believe that regarding the calculable investment ratio for management..." Taking out
the other party's previous proposal, Koshimizu Sakura cautiously began to offer her opinion, while Li Jies also
began to take notes in his notebook.

A perfectly normal business atmosphere.

If someone were standing behind Li Jies and looking at his
"earnest" notes, they would see extremely shocking text. The notebook was actually
a rating sheet based on Latin, with a wide variety of contents. The main columns were:
beauty level, height, weight, breast size, logical ability assessment, controllability, trainability... a jumble of things
, with several subheadings below containing all sorts of questions, both ordinary and strange.

Now, with Sakura Koshimizu speaking and Lee Jies's assessment, her logical reasoning ability has been rated
a perfect 5 stars, and her beauty has also been given a perfect 5. The other aspects are also
being silently evaluated in the men's minds.

Undoubtedly, the woman opposite is exceptionally talented. She holds a Master of Business Administration degree, graduated from the prestigious University
of Tokyo, and at only 25 years old, she has five years of senior corporate management experience.
Her figure and appearance are also top-notch. From childhood, she attended renowned schools in Japan and has a considerable number
of honors. Even by the discerning eye of a seasoned venture capitalist, her resume is
practically perfect. It's so good it inspires immense envy. Unfortunately, if the woman opposite her were a man, it would be even more enviable.

Of course, venture capital is not the same as HR recruitment, and having such an excellent resume doesn't necessarily make
one a good business founder. However, Lee Jesse wasn't worried about this at all, not only because the other party's family was the
Koshimizu family—an incredibly low-profile but extremely powerful family in ancient Japan, with influence extending throughout the business, political, military, and academic worlds. It could be said that the Koshimizu family's shadow
was subtly present in almost every third-tier industry . Most importantly, his behind-the-scenes boss—Director Khadgar—didn't mind using this five million dollar venture capital investment as bait to lure the fish in. If successful, the other party would have no future. If unsuccessful, facing the Koshimizu family's wrath, Khadgar might remain unscathed, but he, as the executor, would certainly have no future. Koshimizu Sakura noticed that Lee Jesse's smile widened even more. Facing unknown dangers without flinching, but instead becoming increasingly calm and determined, this was Lee Jesse's strength, and one of the key reasons Khadgar valued him. In the words of the current director, this was a natural-born special agent. At this moment, Sakura Koshimizu's speech had temporarily come to an end, and she was looking at him with an inquiring gaze. The woman opposite him had a gentle appearance, possessing the unique demeanor of Japanese women that Westerners generally perceive. Looking at her clear and bright eyes, Li Jies couldn't help but let his imagination run wild. A woman like this must be very popular at school. This was also a way for Li Jies, as a special agent, to relieve pressure. Although he really wanted to finish the job, after thinking about it, Li Jies decided to stick to the script he had initially prepared. "Ms. Koshimizu, I value your opinion, but personally, I think it's best to leave this clause in the proposal unchanged. Also..." "Mr. Li, I also have the sincerity to discuss this with you..." Time passed second by second amidst the verbal sparring. Since the two sides had already exchanged opinions several times beforehand via phone and email, a general consensus had been reached. Moreover, the man's main focus wasn't actually on this business deal; what Li Jies was currently agonizing over were some peripheral details. Li Jies had no intention or need to change the overall direction , focusing instead on agonizing over minor issues. He carefully controlled the pace, oscillating between tension and relentlessness, subtly wearing down his opponent's spirit. "Hmm, I think I can concede on this point, as a way of reciprocating your previous concessions." Rubbing his temples, the beautiful girl before him yielded. A considerable amount of time had passed. He glanced at the clock; the large hands stood quietly at 11 o'clock. After such a long exchange, Li Jies believed that Koshimizu Sakura was already somewhat fatigued. After all, no made of iron. After two and a half hours of intense mental activity, no one could maintain their initial energy. Li Jies smiled; this was the expression he used most often that morning. He had the rhythm under control. Since his aim was the big fish, he was willing to concede even at a loss. Li Jies had been subtly wearing down the intellectual girl's energy with small details, ultimately either frankly giving up or demanding concessions in return, watching her react with joy or sorrow as he made his moves. " That's enough," he thought to himself , "the prologue to the script has ended; it's time to begin a new chapter." He straightened his tie, tidying his appearance. "Miss Shimizu, I must say, your professionalism is truly admirable." After a brief compliment, he saw the woman return his smile. Li Jies continued, "As you know, I have great sincerity towards this collaboration. Before you came here, I prepared a few small gifts." With that, Li Jies opened a drawer and took out a pre-prepared box. Holding the gift in both hands, he didn't directly hand it to Shimizu Sakura. Facing her slightly puzzled gaze, Li Jies smiled again, deftly untying the knot to reveal the gift inside—a delicate little glass bottle filled with pink liquid. "Miss Shimizu, I know that your Eastern tradition is to thank the giver after receiving a gift, and then open it at home. However, I grew up in America, and at this time, I would prefer to follow our custom of gift-giving."

The tradition of giving gifts is that the recipient opens and uses it on the spot, then happily praises the host.
"Besides, I think perfume suits a beautiful woman like you perfectly."

Saying this, she took the gift from the box, then held it up with both hands, presenting it to him.

Unexpectedly, the man was so proactive that Sakura Koshimizu was slightly taken aback, a blush creeping onto her cheeks.
It was clear she wasn't averse to the man before her. She had also noticed that Li Jies had been
polite throughout, never making a single impolite move. His gaze was also gentlemanly, unlike other men who
would seize any opportunity to lewdly peek at her chest and lower body. Moreover, refusing a business partner with a great
potential for cooperation wasn't a good thing.

Sakura Koshimizu had completed her master's studies in the United States and was familiar with Western etiquette. Besides, if she were
truly traditional, conservative Japanese woman, she wouldn't be out in the public eye expanding her family's business empire.

"I got this from a friend in the perfume industry. It's a light fragrance that
highlights a woman's natural charm, perfect for an elegant girl like you. It can also be easily mixed and matched with
other perfumes; it will definitely suit you perfectly," Li Jies said enthusiastically.

"Thank you!" Xiao Qingshui said, accepting the gift and examining it carefully. The small,
delicate , transparent glass bottle reflected shimmering light under the lamp. Pink perfume swayed inside.
The nozzle at the top was carefully shaped like a rose petal, unique and cute.
A .

"Libei," Xiao Qingshui murmured, knowing it was a famous perfume company,
renowned worldwide and highly regarded in the industry.

She examined it several times; the label, logo, everything was there—it was indeed
a product from that company. However, the unique bottle design was quite rare; perhaps it was a new product.

Li Jies, standing smiling to the side, seized the opportunity to introduce, "I know this brand's
perfumes are very famous. A friend of mine happens to be a researcher at that company, and the perfume I brought you is a first-edition collector's edition, not yet available on the market. After you use it, feel free to share your thoughts, and I'll give him
feedback ." It was hard to refuse such kindness, especially since the other person wasn't unpleasant. Compliments are always just right. With a polite smile, Koshimizu Sakura continued to caress the perfume in her hand. She quickly found the mechanism ; the beautifully decorated rose petal-like thing was actually the nozzle switch. "There's an old Chinese saying: 'A fine sword is given to a martyr, perfume to a beauty.' I can't wait to see how beautiful you look with this perfume on." Li Jies stood there with a gentlemanly air, a beaming smile on his face. Koshimizu chuckled. Although ancient "rouge" and the modern "perfume" served the same purpose for women, so the reference wasn't entirely wrong. Besides, even knowing he was flattering her, she still felt a little smug. Seeing Li Jies' expectant gaze, why bother refusing him? She pressed the switch, spraying the perfume in the most elegant way. Soon, the room was filled with a captivating fragrance . Molecules that could activate human olfactory cells spread and dispersed in the air. Due to the obstruction of doors and windows, she couldn't escape the small room. "A very delicate fragrance." Koshimizu Sakura, located at the very center of the fragrance, was the first to experience the wonderful aroma. Countless fragrance molecules, with each breath, rushed through her nostrils into her trachea, then into her lungs, and finally dissolved in her blood with the accompanying oxygen, circulating throughout her body. Of course, the subtle movements of the body are not perceived by the brain. Sakura Koshimizu simply felt a sense of floating as she inhaled the fragrance; all her muscles relaxed, and her skin seemed to become smoother. Her brain also started working at high speed, and her thinking ability seemed greatly enhanced. In short, everything seemed more wonderful. This feeling was very faint, but it was real. To capture this feeling, Koshimizu couldn't help but spray some more perfume on herself. The relaxation deepened , and her mind seemed clearer. Countless forgotten things resurfaced from the depths of her memory, densely packed and endless. Her brain felt infinitely good, and everything seemed clearer as a result. Sakura Koshimizu even felt she could see every speck of dust in the air. "Hey, Miss Koshimizu, I almost forgot, there's another gift I forgot to take out. This is also a work by my friend, but it's not perfume, of course. He's an art enthusiast, and this abstract painting is one of his masterpieces." As he spoke, Li Jies took another item from the drawer. To be precise, it was a painting. As Li Jies said, it resembled an abstract painting. Countless colors—red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, violet… and those unnameable hues mixed in between. “Hmm… this painting is quite nice.” After only a couple of glances, Koshimizu lowered her head and offered a somewhat insincere compliment. The intricate colors were dazzling to her. The colors were so vibrant that she felt an urge to examine them closely and distinguish each individual hue. But a sudden tremor ran through her, as if silently warning her. Koshimizu had always trusted her intuition, so at that moment, she suppressed the urge to investigate further and lowered her head.
