A foggy summer night

I once loved life and would never give up easily before my life was taken away. When the Bosnian War broke out, I was still a carefree young girl because the war hadn't reached our remote little town.

Now, the sunsets and evening glows are still there, but the streets are no longer our streets.

On the mountain, behind the chimneys of every house, Serbs in camouflage uniforms the color of withered leaves, long guns in hand, shot down every pedestrian on the main street, sparing no child. No one lingered on the streets anymore.

I first felt the fragility of life on a bright sunset, when sea fog began to drift sparsely into the streets, but the distant sea and sky shone with a myriad of rays of light. My best friend, Kailin, and I were walking through the alleyways—we could no longer walk on the main streets after school. Ahead, a group of people were busily gathered together, doing something. We instinctively felt something was wrong.

We pushed through the crowd, and lying on the ground was Dai Mei, Kailin's older sister. Dai Mei's blonde hair lay on the ground, a trickle of blood flowing from the corner of her mouth. Her face was pale, her long-lashed eyes tightly closed, her body contorted, face up to the sky. She was wearing a navy blue tank top and white shorts, tightly wrapping her full, firm buttocks.

Days passed, and the Serbian army's power grew stronger. Our small town had become an undefended city. The Serbian army could come and go as they pleased, while the UN forces were no different from mannequins in a store, utterly unable to protect us. The Serbian army could arrest people at will, and people frequently went missing. They also extended their clutches to schools; the high school in the city center alone had over two hundred boys abducted by the Serbian army.

Rumors circulated that they were committing genocide, dragging men into the mountains to kill them; others optimistically believed they were merely being forced to build fortifications for the Serbian army. We dared not go out alone anymore, and the frequency of buying necessities was reduced to a minimum. Fortunately, UN aid still arrived regularly, and with the arrival of summer, we no longer worried about fuel and heating. However, the Serbian army was not willing to let us go.

Finally, they decided to move our Suxi Girls' School to the church in the city center, where they would station troops.

The dim streetlights illuminated three figures in tattered, leaf-colored military uniforms approaching. My shoulders pressed firmly against the butt of the gun, repeatedly checking the safety, constantly reciting the mantra of "three points in a line."

When the three Serbian soldiers reached the courtyard, I aimed at the first one and pulled the trigger. He fell instantly. The other two reacted quickly, firing a burst of bullets at me, some hitting rotten wood above my head, covering me in sawdust. My heart was pounding. I had killed someone! I suddenly felt nauseous. Luckily, it was dark, so I couldn't see their blood. Karen and Cindy's crossfire quickly took them out.

The gunfire alerted the Serbian soldiers downstairs in the west building. They rushed out, but Roche and Winnie's fire immediately blocked the entrance. Two Serbian soldiers fell, and several more rushed out. I fired at them, but I was too nervous and missed. A loud gunshot rang out overhead. It was Heina. She took down two Serbian soldiers in an instant.

I fired wildly in the direction of the Serbian soldiers, finally taking one down. The one running back charged into the combined fire of Roche, Winnie, Karen, and Cindy, taking several bullets before collapsing to the ground, motionless. We immediately rushed back to the priest's room and withdrew from the battle.

In fact, only two Serbian soldiers were killed that night, and seven or eight were wounded, but the rumors spread that more than a dozen Serbian soldiers had been killed.

We hadn't been to Suxi for several days; we wanted to wait until the Serbian army was less vigilant before ambushing them.

But they were getting close to Rozi; hopefully, she wouldn't shoot. Let's run back to the priest's quarters together; together, we'd be stronger! I really regret not bringing a communication device!

Rosie and Winnie had no idea how many Serbian soldiers had come out!

"Where are Olivia, Winnie, and Rozelle?"

"Dead, they're all dead! It's terrible!" My tears flowed again.

Both girls cried.
