The idea of chastity belts, popular in the West, also existed in ancient China and Japan. The Japanese concept of chastity belts was more interesting than the Western one. The "painted chastity belt" involved drawing pictures or writing on the wife's abdomen; once the picture or writing was erased, it signified the wife's infidelity.
There are two or three jokes about this kind of chastity belt—
A husband, worried about his wife's infidelity, wrote the character for "horse" on her stomach before going on a long trip. When he returned, he found the character was larger and thicker than he had written and angrily berated his wife. The wife replied, "A horse eats beans, of course it gets fat."
Another man drew a fishing picture on his wife's belly. Later, the angler moved to the other side of the river. His wife replied, "If you can't catch fish here, of course you have to go to the other side."
There was a jealous husband in China who drew a guard on each of his wife's inner thighs before leaving home. When he returned, he found that the guards had been switched. His wife replied, "They're tired of standing, it's time for them to take a break!"
In China, Qin Shi Huang devised the "virginity mark" (守宫砂). This was created to protect the chastity of palace women. It involved applying the blood of male and female salamanders during their mating season to the women's skin. The blood would wash off after intercourse; otherwise, it could not be removed by any means.
In ancient Korea, a metal ring was installed on a young girl's genitals, and the key was kept by the mother until the daughter's marriage, when it was given to the son-in-law. This metal ring was called a "chastity lock".
