Cherish happiness

    page views:1  Publication date:2014-03-21
They grew up in the same family compound. He was handsome and dashing, she was petite and slender. Everyone could see she loved him. But perhaps because she was always within reach, he was indifferent to her.

He focused all his attention on pursuing a girl who seemed unattainable. He told her that girl was like a cloud in the sky, beautiful because she was distant. Finally, one day, the girl he loved found someone else, and he fell into her arms like a bird with broken wings. He was hurt, and she became his medicine. Behind his back, she secretly wrote blessings for him on colorful pieces of paper, then folded them into lucky stars, hoping her blessings would come true and make him happy.

After that, his depressed mood truly did brighten day by day. On the day she folded a thousand lucky stars, he proposed to her.

After their marriage, she loved him unconditionally and took meticulous care of him. But his embraces always lacked something; she knew he still harbored a dream, connected to that unattainable girl.

Ten years passed in the blink of an eye, and the peaceful days suddenly concealed a turbulent undercurrent. He often came home drunk, staggering about, sometimes not returning home at all.

A woman came to his door; it was the woman he used to like, who, after a long and tumultuous journey, had found refuge in him. He said apologetically that he had pursued her for so long, and now that she had come to him for help, he couldn't refuse.

On the coffee table lay a thin piece of paper—his divorce papers. She signed her name and then packed her bags. He held the paper with a sense of relief. After she finished packing, she seemed to remember something, turned around, took a bottle from the closet, and slowly unscrewed the cap. The stars that had been with him for ten years scattered all over the floor.

He froze, picked up a star, looked at it from left to right, and casually tore it open. The writing on the paper stung his eyes; though blurred, it pierced them with a sharp pain.

She knelt on the floor, tearing the stars apart one by one, then shredded them to shreds, large tears falling onto the paper. He watched her, his heart aching. More and more fragments lay on the ground, and he suddenly realized that all these years, he had been ignoring her like eyes that could never see their own eyelashes. He understood instantly that what protects the eyes isn't all the beautiful things they see, but the eyelashes closest to them, just as the only one who had ever truly loved him was the woman before him.

He held her hand, which was tearing the stars apart. She struggled a few times; he held her tightly in his arms and kissed her tearful eyes. She quieted down, and he whispered in her ear, his voice choked with sobs: "Don't tear my happiness apart anymore. Let these stars accompany us for a lifetime." Tears streamed down her

face. "Cherish the person before you," he would often say to others afterward. The person who is willing to spend their whole life by your side is the one who loves you most, and only the one who loves you most can bring you true happiness.
