Spinal Pinching Therapy – Introduction and Efficacy
:
Spinal pinching is an ancient and practical massage therapy, a health-preserving treasure passed down from our ancestors. It's called "spinal pinching" because it involves pinching the skin and flesh on the back using specific methods. Because it's particularly effective in treating conditions like "stagnation," it's also called "stagnation pinching." "Spinal pinching" refers to the location, while "stagnation pinching" refers to its efficacy. Since the pinched area is also where the Hua Tuo Jiaji acupoints are located, it's also called "Hua Tuo Spinal Pinching Method." In fact, they all refer to the same method. Spinal pinching is simple to learn, convenient, safe, and highly effective, with a wide range of applications, suitable for both children and adults. It can treat various diseases and also strengthen the body, promoting health and preventing disease. It's especially suitable for family health care and is well worth promoting and popularizing.
The earliest record of spinal pinching is found in *Elbow-Side Emergency Prescriptions* written by Ge Hong, a famous health expert and physician of the Jin Dynasty. The *Elbow-Side Emergency Prescriptions: Treatment for Sudden Abdominal Pain* states, "Pinch the skin along the spine, deeply pinching and pulling at the pain, from the coccyx to the top of the head, then stop. If not cured, repeat." The phrase "pinching the skin along the spine" is the later practice of spinal manipulation. This method has been widely practiced among the people since the late Ming Dynasty, over a thousand years ago.
Its effects include
: 1. Strengthening the spleen and stomach, removing stagnation and accumulation, promoting digestion and absorption, and preventing various gastrointestinal diseases such as anorexia, food stagnation, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
2. Quickly stimulating and invigorating the body's Yang energy, improving immunity, and preventing colds, coughs, and other infectious diseases. It is a universal health care tool for families.
3. Harmonizing Yin and Yang, enhancing the nervous system's function of regulating the whole body, improving sleep, promoting brain health and intelligence, and preventing night crying, bedwetting, excessive sweating, irritability in children and insomnia in adults.
4. Regulating and strengthening the functions of the five internal organs, promoting growth and development in children, preventing malnutrition, emaciation, anemia, and various deficiency-cold diseases, and improving sub-health conditions.
V. It can unblock the meridians of the spine, relax the back muscles, adjust the spinal balance, and prevent and treat neck, shoulder, and lower back strain and pain.
Spinal Pinching Method Two – Techniques and Principles
Common Technique:
The person being pinched lies prone on a bed or sofa, lifting their clothes to expose their entire lower back. The operator stands beside the person being pinched, using both hands to pinch the skin and flesh along both sides of the spine, kneading and pushing forward, from the Changqiang acupoint at the tailbone to the Dazhui acupoint at the neck, repeating 3-9 times. Specific Techniques: 1.
Thumb-Front Spinal Pinching Method: Both hands are half-fisted, with the index, middle, ring, and little fingers bent into an arch shape, the backs of the fingers placed on both sides of the spine. The radial side of the middle phalanx of the index finger presses against the skin and flesh, pushing forward and downward, while the thumb presses down straight. The pad of the thumb and the radial edge of the index finger exert force against each other to pinch the skin and flesh of the back, with the thumb in front and the index finger behind. Both thumbs alternately twist backward along the midline of the spine, while the index fingers push forward. The two techniques work together, pinching and releasing continuously, pushing towards the neck.
Second, the thumb-back spine pinching method: Extend both thumbs, placing the fingertips on either side of the spine, fingertips facing forward, pressing against the skin and flesh; press forward with the index and middle fingers, palms facing down. Use the pads of the thumbs and index and middle fingers to pinch the skin and flesh of the back. With the thumbs behind and the index and middle fingers in front, push the thumbs forward while simultaneously twisting the index and middle fingers alternately backward, working together to pinch and release continuously, pushing towards the neck.
The two techniques are essentially similar in effect and can be chosen flexibly.
To enhance the effect, a three-step lifting method is often used to increase the stimulation. That is, after every three pinches and twists, stop moving forward and pull upward forcefully once.
Basic principles:
First, concentrate and focus. When performing spinal manipulation on children, one should do so with loving care; when doing it on adults, both parties should cooperate and coordinate, thinking simultaneously, "You feel normal now, comfortable," or "Your body is stronger, your immunity is improved." If you can concentrate fully and strengthen your intention, the effect will certainly be more ideal.
Second, practice makes perfect. Regularly performing spinal manipulation on relatives and friends will naturally make you more skilled, more flexible, and more confident.
Third, proceed gradually. Initially, pinch less skin and flesh, use less force, and fewer repetitions. After two or three times, gradually pinch more skin and flesh, gradually increase the force, and gradually increase the number of repetitions.
Fourth, persevere. Those with chronic diseases or weak constitutions should ideally develop a daily habit of regular spinal manipulation. With consistent practice, the effects will inevitably become more and more obvious. If you can persist for a year and a half, or even three to five years, your overall health will definitely see significant improvement.
Spinal Manipulation Method Three – Common Questions
First, the timing of spinal manipulation. It can be done at any time of day, without being strict. However, it is best to do it after waking up in the morning or before going to bed at night. 1. It is best not to perform this after a full meal.
2. Frequency of spinal manipulation: If for treating illness, it can be done 1-2 times a day continuously until recovery; if for strengthening the body, it must be done once a day at a fixed time to form a habit and be maintained long-term; if for health maintenance and disease prevention, it can be done every two or three days, or irregularly .
3. Number of repetitions: Each session should generally consist of 3-9 repetitions. If the child feels comfortable and wants more, then three to five more repetitions are fine.
4. Pressure applied during spinal manipulation: The pressure should be as even and continuous as possible. For children receiving spinal manipulation for the first time, the movements must be gentle, to the point of comfort. While manipulating, praise them for their strength and fearlessness, otherwise they may develop fear and be unable to cooperate, making the manipulation difficult. For adults receiving spinal manipulation for the first time, the principles and effects should be explained clearly, and the pressure should be within their tolerance. Initially, when manipulating others, the fingers may not be able to exert much force, but with frequent manipulation, the strength will gradually increase.
5. Body position for spinal manipulation. The person being pinched should lie face down on a bed or sofa, with their body straight. Infants and young children can be held diagonally in an adult's arms or lean against an adult's legs or knees. The operator's posture should be comfortable and natural.
VI. Pain from Spinal Pinching. With the same pressure, some people with low pain sensitivity, or those who regularly undergo spinal pinching, will experience less noticeable pain. For the same person, the pain from spinal pinching is often more severe when ill than before the illness. People with severe blockages in the spinal meridians and stiff, rigid muscles will experience more pain from spinal pinching. However, it will become increasingly easier and more comfortable with continued pinching.
VII. Contraindications for Spinal Pinching. Spinal pinching should not be performed on areas with broken skin, inflammation, or boils on the back. It should be used with caution in people with high fever, heart disease, or bleeding tendencies such as thrombocytopenia.
VIII. Direction of Spinal Pinching. Generally, pinching is done from bottom to top. For those with significant internal heat, high blood pressure, or asthma and cough, pinching can be done from top to bottom, or first from top to bottom.
IX. Spinal Pinching Formula. In practical application, spinal pinching can be performed alone, or, depending on individual circumstances, it can be combined with one or two other massage techniques. For example, those with poor digestion and absorption can be combined with abdominal kneading and acupressure on Zusanli (ST36); those with weak constitutions can be combined with kneading and pressing Shenshu (BL23) and acupressure on Zusanli (ST36). This can improve the therapeutic effect.
X. Other Issues. 1. The operator's fingernails must be short and trimmed to avoid scratching the skin and flesh of the person being pinched. 2. The environment should be at a suitable temperature, avoiding wind and cold to prevent catching a chill. 3. If the technique is mastered and the operation is skillful, a clear "tap" sound will often be heard when lifting the skin and flesh. This is a good sign that the stagnation and adhesion between the fascia are being loosened.
Spinal Pinching Method Four - Preliminary Exploration of the Principle
I. From the perspective of meridians and acupoints: From the coccyx to the neck, there are 126 acupoints distributed along the entire spine. Spinal pinching can effectively activate and unblock these acupoints, thereby quickly regulating and enhancing the body's vital functions.
1. The Du Meridian runs along the center of the spine. Known as the "Sea of Yang Meridians," it is the major hub for the circulation of Qi and blood throughout the body. It governs and controls all Yang energy, and the circulation and distribution of Yang Qi are closely related to it. Human vitality is a manifestation of Yang Qi. Pinching the spine can unblock the Du Meridian, activate and promote the body's Yang Qi, thereby enhancing vitality.
2. The Bladder Meridian runs along both sides of the spine. This is the most extensive meridian in the body, with all the back-shu points of the five internal organs (Lung Shu, Jueyin Shu, Heart Shu, Liver Shu, Gallbladder Shu, Spleen Shu, Stomach Shu, Triple Energizer Shu, Large Intestine Shu, Small Intestine Shu, and Bladder Shu) distributed along its first lateral line. The term "shu" means "transfer" or "infusion." This is where the essence and Qi of the internal organs are transferred and infused. Therefore, pinching the spine can regulate the Qi and blood of the five internal organs and enhance their functions.
3. Along the entire lower back, from the first thoracic vertebra to the fifth lumbar vertebra, 5 fen (approximately 1.5 cm) lateral to the spinous process of each vertebra, there is a Hua Tuo Jiaji acupoint, totaling thirty-four acupoints on both sides. Hua Tuo Jiaji acupoints are extra points outside the meridians; the upper half treats diseases of the upper limbs and chest, while the lower half treats diseases of the lower limbs and abdomen. Besides acupuncture, pinching with the fingers can also achieve good therapeutic effects.
II. From a physiological and anatomical perspective, the spine is the bony trunk supporting the human body, containing the spinal cord, an extension of the brain. The spine is the location and channel for nerve roots from the brain and spinal cord to all organs and tissues of the body. The autonomic ganglia and sympathetic trunks of the human body are mainly distributed on both sides of the spine. The brain controls and regulates the body's activities through the spinal cord and nerves. Pinching the spine, through stimulation of these ganglia and sympathetic trunks, and with the help of complex neural and humoral factors, can holistically and bidirectionally adjust the function of internal organs, improve the body's immunity, and thus achieve the purpose of strengthening the body and preventing and treating diseases.
III. Other Benefits: 1. The spleen and stomach are the source of qi and blood production; "a strong spleen in all four seasons is immune to pathogens." Spinal pinching can strengthen the spleen and stomach, increase appetite, and normalize digestion, thus improving immune function. 2. Promoting blood circulation and removing stagnation. During life, due to internal injuries from excessive emotions or external pathogenic factors, the flow of qi and blood is prone to stagnation and blockage. Long-term stagnation in the back inevitably leads to adhesion and hardening of the skin and flesh. Spinal pinching can clear the stagnation of qi and blood in the back and eliminate these adhesions. 3. Through intimate skin contact, it can enhance relationships with relatives and friends, soothing and comforting the restless, painful, helpless, tired, and lonely hearts of others.
Hua Tuo's Spinal
Pinching Method - Introduction and Efficacy
Introduction
Spinal pinching is an ancient and practical massage therapy, a health-preserving treasure passed down from our ancestors. Because it involves pinching the skin and flesh on the back with the fingers using a certain method, it is called "spinal pinching." Because it is particularly effective in treating "stagnation" type of ailments, it is also called "stagnation pinching." "Pinching the spine" refers to the location of the pinch, while "pinching the acupoints" refers to the effect. Because the pinched area is the location of Hua Tuo's Jiaji acupoints, it is also called "Hua Tuo's pinching spine method." In fact, they refer to the same method. The pinching spine method is simple to learn, convenient, safe, and effective, with a wide range of applications, suitable not only for children but also for adults. It can treat various diseases and also strengthen the body, promote health, and prevent disease. It is especially suitable for family health care and is well worth promoting and popularizing.
The pinching spine method was first recorded in *Elbow-Side Emergency Prescriptions* by Ge Hong, a famous health expert and physician of the Jin Dynasty. If it is not healed, repeat." The phrase "pinch the skin of the spine" is what later became known as pinching the spine. This method has been widely circulated among the people since the late Ming Dynasty and has been practiced for over a thousand years.
Efficacy
1. It can strengthen the spleen and stomach, remove stagnation and eliminate food accumulation, promote digestion and absorption, and prevent and treat various gastrointestinal diseases such as anorexia, food stagnation, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
2. It can quickly invigorate and raise the body's Yang energy, improve the body's immunity, and prevent and treat colds, coughs, and other infectious diseases. It is a universal tool for family health care.
3. It can harmonize Yin and Yang, enhance the function of the nervous system in regulating the whole body, improve sleep, improve brain function and intelligence, and prevent and treat night crying, bedwetting, excessive sweating, irritability in children and insomnia in adults.
4. It can regulate and enhance the function of the five internal organs, promote the growth and development of children, prevent and treat malnutrition, emaciation, anemia, and various deficiency-cold diseases, and improve sub-health conditions.
5. It can unblock the meridians of the spine, relax the back muscles, adjust the balance of the spine, and prevent and treat neck, shoulder, and back strain and soreness.
Pinching the spine method two - techniques and principles
Common technique:
The person being pinched lies face down on the bed or sofa, lifts their clothes, and exposes their entire back. The operator stands beside the person being pinched, using both hands to pinch the skin and flesh along both sides of the spine, kneading and moving forward from the Changqiang acupoint at the tailbone to the Dazhui acupoint at the neck, repeating 3-9 times. There are two specific techniques:
1. Thumb-front pinching: Both hands are loosely clenched, with the index, middle, ring, and little fingers bent into an arc shape. The backs of the fingers are placed on either side of the spine, with the radial side of the middle phalanx of the index finger pressing against the skin and flesh, pushing forward and downward, while the thumbs press down. The pads of the thumbs and the radial edges of the index fingers exert force to pinch the skin and flesh of the back, with the thumbs in front and the index fingers behind. The thumbs alternately twist backward along the midline of the spine, while the index fingers push forward. The two techniques work together, pinching and releasing continuously towards the neck.
2. Thumb-back pinching: Both thumbs are extended, with the tips placed on either side of the spine, fingertips facing forward, pressing against the skin and flesh; the index and middle fingers press forward, palms facing down. Pinch the skin and flesh of the spine with the pads of your thumbs and index and middle fingers. The thumbs are behind, and the index and middle fingers are in front. Push the thumbs forward while simultaneously twisting the index and middle fingers backward alternately, coordinating the two movements, pinching and releasing continuously towards the nape of the neck.
These two techniques have similar effects and can be chosen flexibly.
To enhance the effect, often use a three-step lifting method to increase the stimulation. That is, after every three pinches and twists, stop moving forward and lift upward once forcefully.
Basic principles:
1. Focus and intention. When pinching a child's spine, do so with love; when pinching an adult's spine, both parties should coordinate, thinking, "It's normal now, I feel comfortable," or "My body is stronger, my immunity is improved." If you can concentrate fully and strengthen your intention, the effect will definitely be more ideal.
2. Practice makes perfect. Regularly pinching the spines of relatives and friends will naturally make you more skilled, more flexible, and more confident.
3. Proceed gradually. Initially, when pinching the spine, pinch less skin and flesh, use less force, and repeat fewer times. After two or three times, gradually pinch more skin and flesh, use more force, and repeat more times.
Fourth, perseverance is key. Those with chronic illnesses or weak constitutions should cultivate the habit of pinching the spine regularly every day. With consistent practice, the effects will become increasingly apparent. If you can persist for a year and a half, or even three to five years, your overall health will significantly improve.
Spinal Pinching Method Three – Common Questions
I. Timing of Spinal Pinching. It can be done at any time of day, without strict adherence. However, it is best to do it after waking up in the morning or before going to bed at night. It is best not to do it after a full meal.
II. Frequency of Spinal Pinching. If for treating illness, it can be done 1 to 2 times a day continuously until recovery; if for strengthening the body, it must be done once a day at a fixed time to form a habit and persist long-term; if for health maintenance and disease prevention, it can be done every two or three days, or irregularly.
III. Number of Repetitions of Spinal Pinching. Each session should generally be done 3 to 9 times. If you feel comfortable and want to massage it again, then you can massage it 3 to 5 more times.
IV. The Pressure of Spinal Pinching. The pressure should be applied as evenly and continuously as possible. For children receiving spinal pinching for the first time, the movements must be gentle, aiming for comfort. Praise them while pinching, commending their strength and resilience; otherwise, fear and anxiety may arise, making the pinching difficult. For adults receiving spinal pinching for the first time, explain the principles and effects clearly, applying pressure only to their tolerance. Initially, when pinching someone's spine, it's often difficult to apply sufficient pressure; with practice, this pressure will gradually increase.
V. Body Position for Spinal Pinching. The person being pinched should lie prone on a bed or sofa, with their body upright. Infants and young children can be held diagonally in an adult's arms or lean against an adult's legs or knees. The practitioner's position should be comfortable and natural.
VI. Pain Sensation During Spinal Pinching. With the same pressure, some people with low pain sensitivity, or those who regularly receive spinal pinching, may experience less noticeable pain. For the same person, the pain during spinal pinching is often more severe when ill than before the illness. People with severe blockages in the spinal meridians and stiff, rigid muscles will experience more pain when having their spine pinched. However, the more you pinch, the more relaxed and comfortable you will feel.
Seven, Contraindications for Spinal Pinching: Spinal pinching should not be performed on those with broken skin, inflammation, or boils on the back. It should be used with caution in people with high fever, heart disease, or bleeding tendencies such as thrombocytopenia.
Eight, Direction of Spinal Pinching: Generally, pinching is done from bottom to top. Those with significant internal heat, high blood pressure, or asthma and cough can pinch from top to bottom, or pinch from top to bottom first.
Nine, Formulas for Spinal Pinching: In practice, spinal pinching can be performed alone, or, depending on individual circumstances, one or two other massage techniques can be combined with spinal pinching as the primary method. For example, those with poor digestion and absorption can combine it with abdominal massage and acupressure on Zusanli (ST36); those with weak constitutions can combine it with massage on Shenshu (BL23) and acupressure on Zusanli (ST36). This can improve the therapeutic effect.

The spleen and stomach are the source of qi and blood production; "a strong spleen in all four seasons is immune to pathogens." Spinal manipulation can strengthen the spleen and stomach, increase appetite, and normalize digestion, thus improving immune function. 2. Promoting blood circulation and removing stagnation. During life, due to internal injuries from excessive emotions or external pathogenic factors, the flow of qi and blood is prone to stagnation and blockage. Long-term stagnation in the back inevitably leads to adhesions and hardening of the skin and muscles. Spinal manipulation can clear the stagnation of qi and blood in the back and eliminate these adhesions. 3. Through intimate skin contact, it can enhance relationships with family and friends, providing comfort and solace to those who are restless, distressed, helpless, tired, or lonely.
